The Alchemy of Psyche

The Alchemy of Psyche

A Moon Cycle of Verse

The unexpected moments reveal the layers of ourselves we have yet to meet.

This collection of poetry and art journeys through these inner realms, where dreams, memory, nature, and ordinary experience reveal the quiet depth and delicacy of life.

Following the rhythm of the moon, these poems move through darkness, stillness and beauty, where the subtle begins to speak.

Poetry becomes the afterlife of silenced thought.

The Alchemy of Psyche

A moon Cycle of Verse

For Melinda Powell, lucid dreamer and guide, whose support helped rekindle my creative spark.

Prologue

Here I invite you to accompany me through fragments of a human journey.

Somewhere between sleep and waking, under moonlight, I learned to see differently—to notice what lay in shadow and glimpse the light behind the ordinary.

As attention settled into stillness, words began to emerge.

May these poems and images accompany you for a while and illuminate the landscapes of your life.

Falling inward, a universe darkens, stars kindle within. I am carried through rupturing currents, given to dreams.

Imagination — the mind untethers, thins, momentum gathers.

IThe Blackening

Shadow, descent, loss

New Moon: Descent

The Child Speaks

Her world hangs suspended in moments of sore yearning grained deep, where patterns of selfhood formed without mirrors.

Losses carved their voids from the fabric of existence.

There’s simplicity in it now, she knows.

“My mother’s fog cast me adrift.”

She speaks from inner realms that ignite my mothering self, born in dreams.

I hold her close. “I know,” I soothe.

Then intuitive breath stirs, freed from long incubation.

“My father’s fury locked me away,” she says.

Sun-kissed freckles come into view, hair pinned gently from her face. She says nothing as I gaze to her depths and find stillness.

“It’s not too late,” I cry. “Your spirit still waits to rise.”

I am listening, sensing my essence. The gentle lightness of being that was drawn from me is renewing itself.

“Please stay,”

I say, for these moments are crystallised fragmentsthe fabric of myself evolving.

Desolation’s Toll

I once saw a desolate landscape in someone’s eyes. My glance held a sinking trance drawn to the flatness of that barren space I fell, panic rising, afraid to land in such emotionless terrain. Horror stung as I willed my gaze away from where my seeing met the blankness in another human being.

I saw the place where compassion could not spring, held still in winter’s reign, the snow unmelted, envy iced against the thaw of a contorted soul, scarred by bitter pain retained.

Haiku for Ego’s Pleas

I crave and I strive, clay beneath hands that cradle, unsure what to form.

Longing and grasping, I wear the shape of myself, hollow at the core.

Centred on the wheel, form gathers under my palms, or clay flies apart.

From the Furnace

Ego distils in dreams, fragments into floating embers from the furnace of coal-faced heat.

Surrendered to fears, dreams cry tears that mark the soul’s intervention, dislodging powers of projection and deluge.

A clear slate invites the rewriting of vestiges, blackened fragments from the original fire of being.

Where dreams distort or withhold their conjuring and balancing, evading equilibrium, I learn to sink.

In the sinking, mining for material, calling for attention, raw matter for transforming.

Unexpected

I write upon a page inky blue.

My glass spills water. Blurry lines emerge, purple bleeding through to every page beneath, a wreath of memory revising the original.

Each imprint a shape distorted, a reformed art once carefully drafted, now crafted by the unexpected. Ego’s words fall on soul’s page, unsure of the form emerging.

All My Life Cascades

All my life cascades falling to the vortex the small voices wade.

Stones beyond time, weighed in shallows gathered deep— all my life cascades.

The sway of currents played in the echo chamber the small voices wade.

After the dive washed grey everything salt-tested all my life cascades.

Skins of the past I braved calling through my childhood the small voices wade.

The moments left remake the glimmer of time all my life cascades, the small voices wade.

First Light

Deep within, colours stir and rise behind my eyes, a hope.

Mysteries quicken the senses, newly alert to connection.

I open, delicate to ancient knowing, unpossessed, of such wide reaches of mind.

Awaiting dreams from night’s wintering, floods advancing the heart’s pulse moving through.

II

The Whitening

Emergence, healing, illumination

First Quarter: Emergence

Moon Encounter

Hidden from my elusive, subtle, intuitive self for so long, before moon’s waxing began. Then my moon-eyes opened, the world leaned lunar, moon-senses stirred tasting a new reality. Slowly, wisdom rose to fullness. a moon-pulse of consciousness rose from beneath my sun-drenched world. The full-beam of ego’s glare softened into bright relief.

Moon-shadows gathered a wild silvered logic a sheen of subtle sight.

Compassion stirred in my sea of being, a rising moon waxing to fullness, where rapture, yet unborn, may still grow in me.

Layers once numbed can cradle beauty and divinity.

May I learn to discern and trace this new wildness forming in me.

Seedhead

A feathery seed floats before me, delicate and bright, a vision of what may be.

Drifting tangentially on the breeze, I am engrossed, immersed in its passage.

Then, arresting its flight in a windless bay, before wending nearer still, a purposeful messenger bearing haloed flight sways and trembles under unseen command, its course remote, fated by wind’s streams.

It veers, without pause, gliding to a soul unknowing, who catches, then discards, the magic of presence gone. In tender streams of heartfelt being, meaning speaks again. My heart shudders, as something once entrusted evades the day’s light.

The Dark Prince

The young prince, cloistered deep, seeks me to house him, secrete his life’s beginnings.

The king that ruled me, (pinning wings), trusts I denied the prince his curtained secrecy.

Three within, a pretence of two.

When he reveals his presence he emerges ghostly black,

caped in triangular hood and smock, drifting by the king’s incandescent gaze, briefly glimpsed.

I think I must die, for he must live.

Waxing Gibbous: Ascent

Receptive Being

I am nudging something within, not dreams, but meditation’s grace.

Night thoughts surface, always there, behind the mind, held somewhere.

Breath brings intensity, perfumes rising and falling, an awareness of orchid’s presence.

Pelargonium, rosettes of aeonium, an inner garden suggesting itself.

At the threshold of this space, I wait for petalled embrace.

Plunging deeper to nature’s realms, pearls and sealed shells open, vessels refreshed.

Above, sunlight’s gold unfurls on each surface, beauty in candour, unhidden.

Light and shadow form white flares from roof and chair, darkness banding beyond reach.

Revelation gathers in the spaces of receptive being.

Spirit Sings in Wind

Gusts whip hard, unnerving me.

I prefer quieter traces of presence, remaining shrouded.

She has her ways of speaking, loud and strong. Yet I’ve seen a child’s energies reawaken, freeing the one beneath.

Her presence invites untamed exuberance.

Surfers to the wind, read the air’s shifting hand, entering the wave.

Bending, hands part a tide of blossoms, wind passing through.

Games scatter across the field, voices lift and spin.

Life held aloft, in flight’s suspension, the thrill rising as the dream lifts me, my body released through air.

I yield to that field, loosened and winged, in bright relief.

The Walled Box

Baby birds resound from the walled box.

Parent perched, quick as a shuttered click, flies in laden— the haven erupts. First flight must be soon; freedom beckons.

Between the two the feeding never stops, slick wings charge the air, while we await more of time’s grace birds chatter.

Full Moon: Zenith

Moon’s Glow on Snow’s Face

Silent snow creeps, flake upon flake. Drifts heap in shadowed light as I am stilled into being.

Now I am drawn to the blanketing of what has been, knowing what lies beneath. Darkness receives stillness. Flakes swirl voiceless, colour blotted to white dominion, a luminous terrain where change reshapes.

Headlights strike: flakes flare and sweep over a road buried deep, wrapping, snapping against metal skins, patching the dark in brief maps barely seen.

A cloak fastens the night to itself and something in me settles too.

In the Speed of Stillness

As ego’s shell dissolves, and evolves still, I am drawn to drinking moon’s quiet moods.

Birdsong spills spirit into me. My fears recede, soothed by the familiar, speaking anew.

I move at rested pace In the speed of stillness, where horizon shifts, and paths once carved like deltas soften to streams.

Knowledge lived in flesh casts light from prism’s colour, projected for eyes attuned to subtle truth.

I, once brittle, now absorb like sponge, liquid seeping through the long-parched part of me that doubted its beholding.

Now love seems a river, streaming me.

Guided, I helm, beyond pretence.

Morning Light Reflection

As daylight breaks into the darkness of my space, a small cabin afloat the quiet river, ripples in white heat.

A glint of sunlight finds my closed eyes, pulsing like a heartbeat.

A silken presence, speaks to me of ecstasy. This single shaft, like a flame, lived for a moment, conjuring contentment, bequeathing the finest morning dream I have known.

Waxing Gibbous: Embrace

Shoreline

The rock in me sits, strong and still at the shoreline, holding back the fathoms.

Geese into the wind, seeking mud of tide’s withdrawal, paddling hard beneath.

Seabirds shoot the sky, hover in slow motion, carried from below.

Soul’s Guiding Current

I lived in terror of inundation, fearing the ocean’s pulse, moon dictated.

There is an art to being in her midst, a solitude borne at the helm.

Madness may lie, thin-veiled and near, or a realm for the brave.

Where compassion deepens, currents turn in my sea of being.

I ride the torrents and splendours of waters rising, breathing again.

Fusion

Embracing moon’s fusion, ego steadies to soul’s pace.

When soul first stirred, I was a shell, dislodged from rock and certainty.

What moved beneath was not madness, but a tide, releasing through stone.

Slow to surrender I felt the seam part, raw matter emerging with pulse.

Within the pulse, mythic verse, love.

Stone Returning

We are not the stones, but stone returning, clothed in moss beneath the sculpting rain; the earth recalls its own forms beginning.

We are not the leaves, but life regained through bud and fruit set to multiply while darkened soil retains the living veins.

Nor like the animal, yet instinct guides us, tender in the arms of surrender, as caution learns at last to subside.

Stone, leaf, hound and hand, points of wonder, chambered in inevitable form, each bearing forth a soul still unrendered.

Soft as clay, our fragile being yields until through us the dream begins its seeing.

III

The Reddening

Integration, compassion, renewal

Last Quarter: Poise

Alliance

I return to stardust.

Flung from celestial heavens

I am wider, growing.

Sun’s descent casts moonlit visions on cities close to sleep and silence. We dare dream beneath this dance unending.

An alliance of day and night adjoining.

Dream Divining

The dream decides its diagnosislaser treatment for my feet a focused fire for life’s passage across hot coals mind over matter through tempered heat made bearable by soles that feel the pain yet emerge unblistered after crossing hell’s terrain. Let the dream divine the remedy.

Mission of the Soul

Calm, serene, secure, I venture by ocean. A vessel enfolds me in gentle motion.

I journey with purpose, search the shoreline with care, guided by knowing of a garden most fair.

There, cleaved in an enclave, etched rocky and rugged, at the base of stone a garden beloved.

In hollows revealed, a deep mystery: aeoniums adorn time’s memory.

Such beauty gestures, a garden in essence, resplendent, yet known, a radiant presence.

There, by the rocks, where the granite wall lies, a weathered wood ladder reaches the skies.

To climb down from above, though the vision is clear, the mission is hard, asking courage here.

So, I venture by sea to this place eternal, in search of such beauty for a soul’s renewal.

Here I find the essence of longing condensed, etched deep in the cliffside, my foundation sensed.

Accessed by the sea in a vessel of bearing, it took long to build for such seafaring.

The mission I see, is at first to be known, descent asks for guidance, a companion grown.

To climb down the ladder, glimpse true destinations where creation lives, is life’s culmination.

Then surrender all fear, bring what is known from above to what resides here, in the full realm of love.

Walk as One

Remember to slow, meander where time softens its will, and the world waits.

Kindle the heart’s creative spark where devotion tends each seed in shadowed earth.

Dreams breathe their mystery, when held close without undoing. Surprises arrive when inner and outer align.

Earth and Sky

I dreamt a cycle: a small vessel cutting hard through water, leaving a restless wake.

Then, softly rising, released into cloud-light, weightless as a bird. Below, a tree beckoned with its ribboned leaves, calling back to earth. Drifting down, not falling but floating, winged, and resourced, moving with ease between elements.

Landing among crisp leaves, stepping into a way of being, adept between the scenes of earth and sky.

Watchful Distance

Alert as a hare darting fast in urgency. I was her.

Then dormant, still and hidden, bidden to new-born form.

Vulnerable as a leveret, in ground’s depression, motionless.

In subtle tones of watchfulness, love throbbed for her protection. Eyes scanning, a heart leaning to another’s suffering, relieved.

In The Folds

Colours, papers, brushes breathe in my hands. Thought barely there.

Old canvases are washed with today— yesterday’s forms and shadows showing through.

I am making moons: white on black, black on white.

Clouds make absence real.

Gold gathers in the folds, deep in light.

Craft Your Life

Craft your life, day, and night. Enrich warp and weft, weave colour and light, contrasts that shade the bright from grey.

Dwell in deep shadows’ design, where meaning is found, not in the shallows of delight, scattered with surface glee.

Breathe height into the view. From flight, look down, discern the shape to be. Then dwell in subterranean hues. Absorb the truest of blues. Remain you.

The garment thus woven will adorn a soul, sewn in majesty, lavished in pearl and stone, glinting with gratitude. Then surrender your creation, a tender offering germinating in the world. Bask in the giving, a life well-lived, willing, a blessing in bloom.

Coda

Anchored in the depths, a vessel streaming the tides, waters smoothing by.

Moments fold themselves, senses refine, alerted, steady in the world.

Written words stir, joy meets me there.
