people to book different characters to go to parties or events to help bring more entertainment.

Our characters interact with the kids to make the child’s birthday special and one that they will always remember. We feel that we are unique to our competitors’ because we try to make sure each of our clients are happy.

We are willing to listen and accommodate to what our clients may want. We allow our client to make choices. Our main goal is to make sure our client is happy and satisfied.

There will probably be many times that will be difficult and it may seem that you aren’t able to handle it but you can and it will be worth it at the end.

ACU professor addresses bullying in a new children’s book

“There is so much bullying and meanspiritedness in our schools today,” Moore said. He said he hopes to inspire and help people recognize there is an issue to be solved.

Theodore Thumbs tells the story of a young, introverted boy who is bullied at school but keeps a positive attitude. Moore wrote the book to address the issue of bullying and hopes school systems, families and communities take action on the serious matter that takes place regularly in the country.

“I was bullied a little bit, but I always had my twin brother to protect me,” Moore said.

“I faced some of that because of my skin color, and my twin brother was in the same situation. People had a hard time embracing differences. So I guess that also encouraged me to go ahead and write this story.”

Brad Mitchell, junior engineering major from Kerrville, described Moore as “very personable and authentic.” “One of my favorite parts of the story was the rich symbolism that you get to see play out,” Mitchell said. “I loved the fact that it is very versatile and it’s very broad.”

The title Theodore Thumbs comes from when Moore used to suck his thumb as a little kid.

His brothers then gave him the nickname “sucky thumbs.” However, Moore said “sucky thumbs” wouldn’t have been appealing to most people, so he decided Theodore was

“I am very excited to work with him; the book kind of reminds me of Charlie Brown on how he fumbles through things,” Metler said.

Moore said he loved the goals of the company, which provides relationships between the publisher, author and readers.

“She is a type of publisher that she wants to get to know the authors, the writers and the poets, and you are not just a number in her book,” Moore said. “And that’s what really attracted me to work with her.”

Moore said the publishing process took about five to six months.Before he was introduced to Metler-Smith, Moore met Morgan Davis, an ACU alumnus who illustrated the book. The next step for Moore is to attend book signings and book fairs in and out of Texas. His first book signing is set this week in Houston at the Texas Library Association, the largest statewide conference in the country. Firefighter Jathan Bilbrey began his career with the Abilene Fire Department in March of 2011. He is certified as an EMT-Paramedic, Firefighter Intermediate, Fire Instructor I, and Basic Wildland Firefighter. He is currently assigned to Engine 1 on B shift.

Battalion Chief Derek Briggs joined the Abilene Fire Department in August of 1997. He was recently promoted to Battalion Chief and he has been assigned to oversee the department’s training division. He is certified as a Master Firefighter, Basic Fire Inspector, Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer II, Paramedic, and Hazardous Materials Technician.

Lafayette Escadrille centennial remembered

The year was 1914 and the world was embattled between different countries and various alliances.

Two years later, France--a long-time ally of the United States-- was entirely embroiled in combat.

“We honor all French and American citizens who have devoted their lives to protecting our shared ideals,” James said. “These valiant Airmen laid the foundation for an American Air Force that will forever stand with France.”

World War I had seen the advancement of many new technologies. The tank and large bore naval gun were new additions, which allowed the war to be carried out on land and sea, but the war had now spread to the air. The introduction of the biplane changed warfare and history.

Although the first 38 Americans flew with the Lafayette Escadrille, 269 others flew in different units

France took full advantage of the benefits the airplane provided them, but pilots were needed to man the aircraft. The United States, full of young men ready to aid its allies in combat, volunteered to fly and fight alongside the French. On April 20, 1916, the Lafayette Escadrille was formed which allowed 38 American pilots to fly under French command.

“Airmen can always be counted on to defend freedom and democracy when called upon,” said Lt. Col. Kevin Bergan, 28th Bomb Squadron chief of academics.

Several Airmen from the 28th Bomb Squadron attended the 100-year anniversary of the Lafayette Escadrille formation in France.

“It was an extreme honor to represent the proud tradition of not only the 28th Bomb Squadron but the entire United States,” Bergan said. “Today’s 28th Bomb Squadron draws its lineage and history from the 28th Aero Squadron, which was a part of the 3rd Pursuit Group during WWI. This squadron, which was one of several that were part of the Lafayette Flying Corps, flew for France prior to the United States formally entering the war. After the U.S. actively entered the war, these seasoned pilots were transferred into the ranks of the newly-formed squadrons to build up the experience level of the newer aviators.”

“One of the things that really struck me was how long our relationship with France goes back,” Bergan said. “During the ceremony, several speakers highlighted that France came to the aid of the fledgling United States during the Revolutionary War when Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, more commonly referred to as simply, Lafayette, battled on behalf of George Washington’s army. He went back to France and ultimately brought the French into the war for independence. One hundred and thirty-seven years later, Americans returned the favor by coming to the aid of France in their battles of WWI, adopting the name of Lafayette to refer to those Americans fighting alongside their French wingmen.”

Although the Great War ended almost one hundred years ago, the contributions and sacrifices of American and French airmen has not been forgotten.

Longer life spans are, of course, a key contributing factor, but lifestyles and eating habits also play a significant part in this epidemic according to many in the fields of medicine and nutrition.

Ms. Armstrong has a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition and an associate of science degree in gerontology from Abilene Christian University. She has maintained a nationally accredited personal training certification with the National Council of Strength and Fitness and has been with Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage in Abilene since 2011.

Marc was born and raised in Abilene and graduated from Wylie High School and Abilene Christian University before attending optometry school in Houston. His wife Sarah just completed a master’s degree in social work at ACU. They have a two-year-old son, Graham.

“We can prescribe some medications,” Marc says. “That varies from state to state. Often we can help people right away instead of sending them to the emergency room, like removing metal from someone’s

Marc and Gabe met when Marc was part of the Body and Soul program at ACU. Body and Soul connects students in premedical majors with mentors for internships and shadowing as well as preparation for testing and visits to schools.

Marc also credits Stephen Corbett, his youth minister at Southern Hills Church of Christ, with helping him grow spiritually and deal with difficult questions.

Advanced Eyecare’s office is beautifully decorated and up-to-date technology includes a user-friendly website with online patient information forms. But Marc and Gabe work to keep the atmosphere non-intimidating and to focus on patient needs. Marc has benefitted from mentors and uses that experience in his work.

“Gabe was a mentor for me,” Marc says. “We still do the Body and Soul program by having students shadow me or do technician work for us.”

Gabe is originally from Oklahoma and opened the first office for Advanced Eyecare on South 14th Street. Since the move to their current location on Buffalo Gap Road, the business has snowballed. They also have an office in Eastland where Marc works two days a week.

Marc and Gabe give credit to their office managers, Mandi Scoggin and Crystal Robinson for keeping the busy offices running.

Advanced Eyecare employs ten full-time staff besides the doctors. Gabe and Marc are both optometrists.

“Optometry is more primary care,” Marc says.

Sewing/Fashion Day Camp to be held June 14

Taylor County 4-H will be sponsoring a “Sewing/Fashion Day Camp” on Tuesday, June 14. Youth interested in learning about sewing and fashion are invited to participate in this event that will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Taylor County Extension Office.

Registration for the camp is due by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6 by calling the Taylor County Extension Office at (325) 6726048. Cost for the camp is $5.00 for 4-H members and $15.00 for non-members. A list of supplies needed will be provided when you register. The workshop is open to all youth that have completed the 3rd grade and up.

Participants will make reversible aprons to take home and construct a community service project that will benefit the homeless. Other sewing and fashion related activities will also be included during the camp.

Storybook Capital Plans Dino-Mite Children’s Art & Literacy Festival Featuring Mark Teague Fifth Annual Event Kicks Off With Glow Dance Party

Abilene, the official Storybook Capital of Texas, will transform its historic downtown into a land of childhood adventure when it hosts the fifth annual Children’s Art & Literacy Festival (CALF) June 9-11, 2016. Events kicks off Thursday night with a free Glow Dance Party at the Abilene Civic Center.

Abilene will welcome illustrator and author Mark Teague, whose best-selling books include the “How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?” series with author Jane Yolen, “Poppleton” series with Cynthia Rylant, and his own titles such as the “Dear Mrs. LaRue” series and “How I Spent My Summer Vacation.” Teague’s honors include the Book Sense Book of the Year award and the Christopher Medal. His titles regularly appear on the New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

Young Leaders of Abilene to Host Summer Camps

One of the most successful programs in CCC’s history is about to launch its second year. By almost any standard, Young Leaders of Abilene has been a hit.

YLA began about a year ago, with a grant from the the Ruth and Bill Burton Family Endowed Fund at the Community Foundation of Abilene, allowing us to develop a new summer program for the young people of our neighborhoods. The idea was to recruit middle-school and high school students, give them some training, and put them to work as “camp counselors,” for a week of day camp in an Abilene neighborhood. We came up with a theme – Caring in Action – and we went to work finding teenagers who could become our counselors.

We began talking with families from our various neighborhoods, with whom we had built relationships; from there, we branched out and talked with some of their friends who also were interested. We ended up with about 15 kids who would serve as camp counselors.

Early last June, right after school was out, we met for a week at the North Park Friendship House, and started helping them become a team.

We did various activities to help them get to know one another; the kids also brainstormed about what kinds of snacks to serve the campers, what kinds of games to play, what kinds of craft projects to do. As much as possible,

we wanted to promote and develop leadership within our team of counselors. We held a day of “practice camp,” and then, ready or not, it was time to start.

By the end of the summer, we were tired but happy with the results we had seen. In the year since then, YLA has continued to function, and most of the counselors from last summer are still active with the program.

We have been meeting about once a month – one month, the young leaders will meet at my house, to visit, hang out, eat, and plan a service project. Then the next month, we will meet in another neighborhood, to host an event for the kids & neighbors there, including a Fall Festival in Holiday Hills, a Christmas party in Stevenson, and a Valentine’s party at Cobb Park. This past week, we went back to Holiday Hills for a “Spring Fling,” in association with our friends from House of Faith.

We conducted four weeks of day camps in different Abilene neighborhoods, where CCC had a presence – Stevenson, College Heights, Valley View, Holiday Hills.

Sometimes we had good turnout, other times not as much as we hoped, but it was good to see our counselors stepping up and being the leaders for the camps – and role models for the younger ones. It was good for the elementary school kids to see their older sisters, brothers, cousins, neighbors – kids who looked like them, and that they knew – running this program, with guidance and help from the CCC coordinators. And it was good for the families in those neighborhoods to have something positive for their kids to do.

So, what’s next? Details for this summer are still being finalized, but our plans this year include growing the program to include five weeks of camp, and we’ve already begun recruiting counselors.

Our schedule for this year is: Training at the Friendship House (June 6-7), with “Practice camp” in Alameda – June 8-9 Week 1 – Holiday Hills, June 13-16 Week 2 – Stevenson, June 27-30 Week 3 – College Heights, July 11-14 Week 4 – Valley View, July 25-28 Week 5 – North Park, August 8-11 (All dates & locations are still tentative / subject to change.)

Gandhi said, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world.” Maybe giving a few teenagers jobs as camp counselors won’t change the world; maybe holding a few weeks of day camp in different neighborhoods won’t either.

But maybe, it’s a start.

Master of Memory Series Starts June 16

Many people believe that memory loss and aging go hand-in-hand: as a person gets older his or her memory begins to fail. While some change may be expected as you age, that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it, in the absence of a brain disease, such as Alzheimer’s Disease – you can be proactive in using some strategies and lifestyle adaptations.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Taylor County will be offering Master of Memory, a two part series, that will help you understand how your memory works and what may affect your memory. Medical conditions, medications, diet and exercise, among other things, may all play a role in how your memory works. Master of Memory will also help you identify and use strategies to improve your memory function.

Part 1 of the series will be held on Thursday, June 16 with Part 2 scheduled the following week, Thursday, June 23. Participants may choose to attend either the morning sessions from 9:30 a.m. – Noon, or the evening sessions from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Classes will be held at the Taylor County Extension Office located at 1982 Lytle Way in Abilene.

Cost of the two part series is $10 per person. To participate, you must pre-register by June 10 by calling the Taylor County Extension Office at (325) 672-6048.

Music is Jacob Murillo’s Inspiration & Passion

1) Tell us a bit about you (where are you from; who is your family). I was born in Abilene, Texas to Danny

and Lou Murillo, who own their own business, Sudden Impact Towing. My parents and family were very supporting and encouraging for my launch into music, my mom driving me everywhere I needed to go, band rehearsals, piano lessons, and whatever else I was doing. And some of my family has already been involved in the music scene in Abilene and guided me in to music.

2. What school did you graduate from? I am a

3. Why is music such a passion in your life?

How did you get started? My mom noticed when

I was 3 years old that I noticed things in music and would verbally talk about them and make connections to other music. So she put me in piano lessons when I was 6 and then took me out due to my older brother’s schedule.

When I was 8 years old my mom put me back into piano lessons, due to my brothers being able to drive and her being not as busy.

I really took to it and practiced non-stop and loved it! When I joined band in middle school, I started to enjoy music a lot more and had fun playing music with my friends. Towards the end of my 8th grade year I had to pick between band and football, and being so passionate about music, I chose band, and decided to go for the hardest drum to make in Drum Line (Quad drums) and made it as a Freshman in high school. It was in high school where my true love for music developed! I joined the Band Leadership team for three years, being drum captain two

of those years. I did steel band all 4 years being pan captain for two of those years, anddid numerous UIL events for band and choir. I arranged music for band, steel band and choir, and toured Europe playing Drum Set with the League of Astonishing Strings.

7. What is the best piece of advice you have been given, and what piece of advice as a young person would you give to up and coming young people in High School? The best

piece of advice I ever received was from my friend Spencer Kasselman’s mom.

The Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation has kicked off Texas State Technical College’s “Make a Texas-Sized Difference” fundraising campaign with a donation of $5,000, and more area businesses and companies have pledged to donate.

The innovating fundraising effort, headed by The TSTC Foundation, is challenging the community, TSTC supporters and alumni to help students get an education by donating to the Texan Success Scholarship.

Vittorio Dagalea and Chris St. John tied for 1st place individually, both with perfect scores! Hadly Whitaker placed 13th and Kyndall Thompson placed 25th. The Entomology team has spent the spring semester competing in and winning judging contests all around the state, and this national championship caps off the tenth win for the season. Crockett Early Head Start is celebrating its first year as one complete campus after years of operating at two locations.

District bond money provided the opportunity to renovate Crockett’s North Wing, previously known as “The Dark Side,” so that the Woodson Early Head Start campus, which operated out of an older model porta-ble building, could join them. The North Wing is no longer the dark side of yesteryears but is now filled with light and laughter as children learn, explore and play.

Renovations took place over the course of the 2014-2015 school year and were completed

by June 2015. The North Wing houses 11 toddler classrooms, a staff workroom, a nurse’s station, and nine staff offices. The transition went smoothly, as many EHS staff members volunteered their time to help move and set up the new wing over the summer.

The Woodson staff began the new school year at Crockett and, while transition can be a difficult time,

on Sept. 15 as a way to thank the community for their support of the district bond election and to show them all of the wonderful things happening within Abilene ISD. Consolidating the campuses has proven to be an invaluable benefit for the program. It has allowed the program to run more efficiently, and the staff, parents, and children have experienced a consistent team of support systems. everyone settled in quickly. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB? I like that I am able to communicate with students as well as the parents. Dealing with students on a daily basis is quite a challenge. Many of them have given up and have no selfrespect or re-spect for others. I learn their names and greet them when I see them in the mornings, at lunch time, bathroom

breaks, in the hallways, and when they leave.

When they are upset or frustrated and come to my office demanding to go home, I speak to them like they want to be spoken to. I ask them what is going on and try to get them calmed down before our conversation goes any further. Some of our students just need that voice that cares, and I try to give them that. I try to encourage them to be on their best behavior and to do the right thing. If I see them in public, I acknowledge them by saying, “Hi, how are you doing?” As they leave the school building on Friday, I tell them, “Have a great weekend; see you on Monday.” You don’t know what that means to a child that is down and out. All they need sometimes is someone that cares. I would not trade my job for anything. I love what I do.”

loved and shared often by family members. My maternal grandmother, who was also a teacher, was another influence.

I knew I wanted to work with children and grew up babysitting, helping with our church VBS, and working with children any chance I was allowed. The Career Pathways team from Abilene High School will represent the state of Texas at the National SkillsUSA competition this summer in Louisville, KY. Team members Randall Grant, Aaron Brumley and Nicholas Outland won the Gold Medal in the Career Pathways-Information Technology competition at the state SkillsUSA contest held March 31-April 1 in Corpus Christi. They will travel to Louisville for the SkillsUSA Championships June 20-24.

For the competition, the AHS team had to demonstrate their knowledge of mobile phone repair by developing a presentation identifying needed products or services and how it can impact the local market.

Bowie Principal Receives Regional Award

Colleagues from the Region 14 education service area have named Bowie Elementary School’s Tina Jones as Elementary Principal of the Year.

Jones, principal at Bowie for the past eight years, will be one of 18 honorees from the state to be recognized at the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisor Association (TEPSA) Awards Reception on June 15 in Austin.

Members of the 20 TEPSA regions across the state annually honor elementary school leaders for their outstanding service to the association.

Award recipients are chosen for their “commitment to advancing the principalship and the association, as well as serving as a voice for Texas students.”

Jones is a native Abilenian who attended school at Valley View Elementary, Franklin Junior High and Abilene High School. She received her Bachelor of Education Degree from Hardin-Simmons University and her Master of Education Degree from Abilene Christian University.

Prior to joining the Bowie staff in 2008, Jones was principal at College Heights Elementary for five years. She began her career as a second grade teacher at College Heights in 1990, and also taught nine years at Ortiz Elementary. She was Instructional Coordinator at Ortiz from 2001-03 prior to becoming a principal.

The TEPSA organization has served Texas PreK-8 school leaders since 1917, and it has more than 5,800 members who direct the activities of more than 3 million children.

“Thanks to the hard work and dedication of these leaders, TEPSA maintains its connection to members at the local level,” said TEPSA Executive Director Harley Eckart in making the announcement.

Returning student tells her own story of strength and determination to fulfill a dream

I was born and raised in Del Rio, Texas. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother. I moved to Abilene in the summer of 2004. I was divorced with a 12 year old daughter and 5 year old son at that time. I remarried in 2009. My husband Ruben and I have 5 kids between us: Kiandra (24), Johnny (23), Alexis (22), Margarita (19) and Adonis (16). We are members of Life Church with Senior Pastor Ezequiel Pecina. I have worked for the City of Abilene for almost 12 years. The last 10 years I have worked at the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District. I have several responsibilities but my main job duty is medical billing supervisor.

2) Where do you currently attend school and what are you studying?

I was 1 of 6 scholarship recipients of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) under graduate/graduate scholarship. The $2,500.00 academic scholarship is for women returning to education also known as non-traditional students.

The requirements for the scholarship were 3.00 GPA or higher, 3 letters or recommendation from persons not related to me and an essay on my objectives for returning to school, chosen major, family background, and family obligations.

Ezequiel Pecina, Senior Pastor of Life Church, Derrick Neal, former Director of the health department, and Dr. Julie St-John, my academic advisor wrote recommendation letters for the scholarship. The scholarship was awarded at the 2016 Women of Outstanding Achievement/Women of Promise and Courage luncheon on April 4, 2016.

This event had approximately 300 people in attendance including Mayor Archibald. The 6 scholarship recipients represented the Women of Promise and Courage. I am so grateful to God and honored to be among women who are distinguished and who are making a difference in their families’ life and the community.

I attend Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Abilene Campus. I recently completed my second semester as a Master of Public Health graduate student. I will graduate May 2017. I am part of the first students in the MPH program that was newly added to TTUHSC Abilene Campus. The MPH program prepares health professionals to practice skillful and evidence-based preventive public health; conduct and communicate research that informs the diverse fields within public health; and provide interdisciplinary expertise in the service of academic, professional and community-based public health organizations. (TTUHSC MPH Degree Program brochure 2015) The program is 42 credit hours. I have completed 20 hours so far. I am taking 12 hours this summer (while working full-time) and the remaining 10 hours I am splitting up into the last two semesters of the 4) What made this award/ program. 5) Why is education so important to you?

Education is important to me because it has helped me grow personally and professionally. I have set a new standard for my fam-

ily and future generations by continuing my education as a graduate student. I am a first generation college graduate. I was 26 yrs old, mother of two, a wife, and working fulltime when I went back to school in 2001. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Health Administration October 2011 after almost 10 years of attending college. At first it was 2 or 3 classes per semester but the last 2 ½ years I was a full-time online student with University of Phoenix. It was a long road with obstacles along the way which detoured my plans temporarily but I would always find my way back. I was diligent and determined to reach my goal. My mother set an example when I was a young girl. She was working full-time, a seamstress the rest of the time, a wife, and

a mother of four but still made time to better herself by taking some night classes here and there. She has her own story of determination and strength. My mother is my role model and what has inspired me to go to the next level.

She has prayed all along for me and I know that God’s hand has been on me this entire journey.

6) What words of encouragement would you give to someone who is thinking of returning to school at an older age?

My words of encouragement for someone who is older and thinking of returning to school: write down your goal, do your research on what you would like to study, take action, and never give up. Also, do not let your past dictate your future.

I graduated high school as a C student. I had average grades but not because I wasn’t smart. I just didn’t have the drive or the full view of my potential back then. I was ok with just getting by. It is hard work to go back to school after being out of school for a period of time, having a family, and working fulltime. I would also encourage them to seek the Lord for strength. I did not make it to this point by my own strength. There were many times I would cry because I was tired of staying up until 2 am working on a project and still had to be up and ready for work at 8am. God has been faithful and shown me favor. God’s word says ask and you shall receive. I ask God for wisdom and He has delivered every single time.

I also have to give thanks to my family for their encouragement and support. My siblings and parents for always celebrating my milestones, my children for enduring life’s ups and downs with me, and especially my husband.

My husband Ruben has 100% supported my decision to go to graduate school. He is my number one fan. He is a blessing in my life.

He reminds me to dream big because I serve a big God.

Busy Family Relies on Faith D.J. and Lauren Sigala, along with their three children, depend on God to lead them through the challenges of life.

Raising a family of three little ones under the age of five is challenging enough. Add to that a full-time, responsible job and life as a fulltime student and you’re talking about D.J. Sigala.

D.J. was born and raised in Abilene. He graduated from Abilene High and completed his freshman year of college. But then life happened and college went on the back burner for six or seven years.

During those years D.J. married his middle school sweetheart, Lauren, also a native of Abilene.

“We dated in middle school,” D.J. says.

“Then, when we started high school, we were just friends.”

They started dating again during D.J.’s freshman year at Abilene Christian University. They married on August 1, 2009. Their daughter Kyle came along in 2011 and their son Grayson arrived in 2012. By then, D.J. was back in college, pursuing a political science degree. He graduated with that degree this May. Their son Case turned one in March.

Kyle has taken the family motto to heart. Her favorite movie is currently Disney’s “The Lion King” and she goes around singing “Hakuna Matata.” The phrase is Swahili and can be roughly translated “no worries.”

Últimamente se ha escuchado mucho acerca de las regulaciones para el uso de lugares públicos los baños, casilleros, vestidores (Bathroom Bills en Inglés) estas políticas están diseñadas para otorgar o negar a un individuo los derechos de usar los baños públicos que correspondan al sexo con el que se identifican las personas y no con el sexo con el que fueron asignados al momento de nacer. Este artículo se enfoca en la seguridad y en la violencia sexual.

Un aspecto a considerar es la posibilidad de que las regulaciones propuestas podrían reforzar mitos y miedos existentes, y que al final pueden resultar en una marginación mayor y en mayor violencia, incluyendo violencia sexual, contra las comunidades transexuales.

Pero como toda historia tiene más de un punto de vista está también la posibilidad de que abusadores usen las leyes como excusa para cometer actos criminales contra el público en general, pero en especial contra mujeres y niños.

El centro regional para las víctimas del delito (RVCC por sus siglas en inglés) se preocupa por eliminar el potencial de violencia sexual dondequiera que esta ocurra y lucha día con día para prevenir la violencia sexual a través de programas educativos que son impartidos por defensores certificados de las victimas del abuso sexual. Estos programas son llevados a cabo en colaboración con las escuelas y se imparten en dichos planteles. Hoy quiero informar al público de habla hispana acerca de las realidades que se viven a nivel estatal sobre del abuso sexual y las comunidades transexuales en el estado de Texas.

Las investigaciones hechas a través de los años han arrojado cifras estadísticas: • El 93 % de las victimas juveniles de abuso sexual conocen a sus atacantes • El 70% de los abusos sexuales son cometidos por personas conocidas o familiares de la víctima • En la mayoría de los casos los abusadores que victimizan a niños, los cortejan (se usó cortejar por falta de una traducción para “groooming” más apropiada) por un tiempo y se ganan su confianza.

• El 84% de las victimizaciones de niños de 12 años y menores ocurre en un hogar, aun niños mayores que son abusados, son abusados en un/a hogar/casa.

La Realidad es que: • De un 50 a un 66 por ciento de la población transexual ha experimentado abuso sexual, y en ocasiones acompañado de abuso físico.

I do life better when I have an outline - a plan. If it is easy to remember, then the more often I’m able to recall and then implement. As Dan and I have been working with other couples, God has given me a compact life and marriage plan. This is not an all-encompassing list - but it is pretty well rounded.

So let’s talk about the four building block B’s that will help you do some blending in your marriage and family.

The third B is for Budget. I hate this word!!! Dan has been patient and taken the time to show me the money coming in and where it all goes. He has also asked me to help him make our finances work and not continuously increase our debt. Living on a tight budget has shown me that you can still somehow find dollars to put towards vacations, Christmas funds, and emergency funds if you will plan it out and then play it out. 5 Things to Do When You’re in an “Emotional Fog”

Growing up, I remember our family going on vacation in Nova Scotia, Canada. During the summer, it is often very, very foggy. It’s sometimes so dense that you can only see a few feet in front of you. When you are driving in fog like that and can’t see, for your own safety and the safety of others, sometimes you just have to pull over, stop the car, wait it out and maybe even consider another route.

Have you ever felt like you were in an “emotional fog?” I have. You can’t see where you are going; you’ve lost your vision. Maybe you’ve lost your vision for your marriage. The road you were heading down with your spouse was suddenly engulfed by an affair, illness, cancer, or an addiction. You once could see a bright future for your child, but the light has dimmed because of rebellion, drugs, or sickness. Work has taken over your life, it’s no longer fun, it’s just tedious; or, perhaps you’ve even lost your job. The fog of finances is now looming.

1. Pull over - You may want to stop what you are doing and pull over if you are able to for a few hours or maybe even get away for several days so you can clear your mind.

2. Patience - Sometimes, you just have to be patient and wait until the fog clears. You can’t try to control everything.

3. Ponder - Spend time reflecting on your life. Instead of asking yourself, “Why is this happening to me?” Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” Or, “What should I do as a result of this?”

4. Pray - God allows the fog in your life and God can take it away. Sure, pray that the fog will clear. But also pray that He will be pleased with how you handle yourself when you’re in the fog.

5. Persevere - Life is not easy. You will struggle. You will experience pain. Don’t give up.

Several months ago a millennial wrote an open letter to the CEO of Yelp who just so happened to employ her. She laid out her inability to afford the cost of living in San Francisco and the changes he should make to help not only her situation but the other employees. Even those who agreed with her arguments had to admit that the tone of her letter was unwise and, not surprisingly, she was fired the next day. The story went viral, prompting both critics and sympathizers.

One thing is undeniable; the job prospects for millennials and housing affordability is difficult. As a result, more and more young adults are moving back with their parents. We need to be prepared for the potential of that day. It’s good to be thinking about creating guidelines before your adolescent leaves the nest for the first time. Here are the 10 guidelines for the millennials living at home.

I Thought He Was A Girl

The day before we found out we were having another boy, I told my wife, “I hope it’s a girl. I would feel bad having to split my guy time with John Michael.” I’ve come to know this child. We’ve become best friends.

I honestly don’t know another friend, or even my wife, well enough to instinctually know that he needs to poop. I just know. It’s time. He can’t speak yet, but I know when he’s telling me he wants apple sauce instead of mac and cheese. We know exactly how to make each other laugh. He knows that when dad is home alone with him, it’s play time. We even dance together. We’re best friends. How could we fit another guy into our party?

And, if a baby sister came into the house, we wouldn’t have to give up our future guy time.

In the end, we’ve let it set in. We were never really disappointed. We, or should I say I wasn’t prepared. I’ll be honest. It caught me off-guard.

We’re not having a girl. But listen. We have our girl. We have our girl to protect, to throw boogers at, to chase around the house, to pester, to love and cherish. She’s our whole world.

She’s our protector. She’s our rock. We call her mom. And now she’ll have one extra security guard. We’ll have another boy to call our own and add to our already perfect family. We’re having another boy, and that’s just fine by me.

6 Signs You Need a Quick Getaway

Sometimes life just builds up so intensely that you find yourself lost in it, and your marriage suffers because of it. Every marriage needs time for a getaway, even a quick one. An ideal getaway is for at least two days, but that’s not always practical. Here are a few signs that indicate you might need to schedule some time, find a grandparent or someone to watch the kids, and get away for a weekend or even a few days in the middle of the week.

1. Your dates, or any snippets of time alone, are more like family business meetings. Dates are supposed

to be about connecting, but when life gets the best of you, the connecting is about planning calendars, addressing problems, making financial decisions, etc.

At 40 years old, Kenan Pyeatt got into the best shape of his life by making some major lifestyle changes. It wasn’t a crazy fad diet or a rigorous workout video program. It was eliminating gluten from his diet and exercising regularly.

The reason for Kenan’s lifestyle change wasn’t because he was extremely overweight. Ever since he was a young boy, Kenan had extreme stomach issues that caused him to go home sick frequently from school. During his teenage years, Kenan learned how to deal with it but didn’t feel well often.

When Kenan married his wife Clarissa at 21 years old he weighed 135lbs. and was super skinny, just as he’d been his whole life, which he attributed to a fast metabolism.

“Fast forward 16 years and I still had all the issues of my youth, but now there were aches and pains in places there shouldn’t be, foggy moments, lack of energy, and a fluffy body at 189lbs.,” Kenan said. “I was pretty sure that at 37 years old I shouldn’t feel this way.”

This didn’t seem right to Kenan so he decided to do some research of his own. He discovered he had a gluten intolerance problem. A year ago now, Kenan started to watch his gluten intake and over the past six months has gone completely gluten free.

“Going gluten free affected how I felt, not how I looked,” Kenan said. “It was the combination of both diet and excercise that led to my overall transformation.”

After going through this experience, Kenan can’t believe how many people have the lack of knowledge about what they put into their bodies and hopes his story can shed some light on it.

“If you struggle with weight, aches, sleep, gut issues, headaches, the list goes on and on, you may have a gluten problem,” Kenan said. “This is just my story, but it took me 40 years to figure it out.”

Abilene Woman Chosen as Honorary Bat Girl for Texas Rangers

An Abilene woman has been chosen as the Texas Rangers’ Honorary Bat Girl after winning a national contest that proves she’s “Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer”.

Ronda Ashenfelter was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer in September of 2011, and she told the Major League Baseball News Team that baseball is something that’s inspired her to keep fighting.

She entered 2016’s Honorary Bat Girl Contest, and won the title for her favorite team, the Rangers.

Agapito Espinoza Sentena, 87, passed away, Thursday, May 12, 2016 after a short illness at his home in Abilene, Texas with his devoted and loving wife by his side.

Agapito was born September 20, 1928 in Austin, Texas to the late Guadalupe Espinoza and Jose Sentena. A native of Sonora, Texas and long-time resident of Abilene, Texas, Agapito married the love of

his life Oralia Ibarra of Sonora, Texas on November 23, 1952. Mr. Sentena worked 20 years for Gooch Packing Company of Abilene and then another 20 years for the Abilene Independent School District. He was an active member of St. Vincent Palloti Catholic Church since 1963. Mr. Sentena was a faithful christian family man who will be missed by all that were blessed to know him.

Mr. Sentena is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Oralia I. Sentena of Abilene; a granddaughter Nicole Sentena; his great grandchildren Ivan Miguel Maysonet, Harley Morgan and Bianca N. Barrow; a nephew who he raised Jose S. Salcedo; one sister, Dominga Villarreal of Mineral Wells; many nieces and other nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Agapito I. Sentena; his sister Narcissa Salcedo and two brothers Jose Vicente Sentena and Jose Pantaleon; and his granddaughter Bianca Sentena..

Mr. Thamez was born March 09, 1949, in Waseca, Minnesota to the late Manuel and Leonor Uresti Thamez. He

Fred married the love of his life Linda Rosales on May 15, 1998.Being in the middle of 9 brothers and 3 sisters, he always managed to be the one to keep the family laughing at gatherings.

Abilene Woman Helps Over 170 Babies with Donation Mother’s Milk Bank Receives First Donation

Abilene Regional Medical Center is now a depot for the Milk Bank of North Texas. Mothers can donate excess breast milk to help premature babies and babies in the NICU. The milk bank has had over 2.5 million ounces of breast milk donated by generous mothers.

Untying The Red Tape

We’ve all heard of “cutting through the red tape”. By using Google, I learned this phrase is derived from a practice in England long ago when government documents were delivered bound tightly in red tape. This has evolved in today’s world and everyone in business knows that almost everything we do is affected by laws, rules, regulations, permits, or ordinances. Unfortunately, it is not usually possible to “cut through” or ignore the mandates because that can result in penalties or the possible shut down of the operation.

One of the easiest ways to decrease the amount of red tape for a business is to do the research. For example, choosing the right location can make a world of difference in the requirements such as zoning. The local planning and development services can supply you with the information about a location, the current zoning, and what would be required if you want to apply for a zone change or exception.

Sometimes a little information is not enough. You may know what permits you need, but haven’t been told how long it takes to process your permit application. In business, time is money and delays in getting started are not only frustrating, it is very discouraging.

Ask questions. What permits are required?

Do I need a license? Will I need to collect sales tax on my product or service? Is my product or service regulated by any health entities? Are there any federal, state, or local agencies which will require me to contact or register my business? How long does the process take? Knowledge is the key to not only starting a business the right way, but having the information that gives you a good understanding of how long each process should take and steps which can make it easier.

There may be some knots in the red tape, but each knot as it is untied represents one more step toward the tape getting unraveled and you will be on the way to making money and giving you the satisfaction of business ownership.

Blue Cross’ Abilene operation has expanded to more 1,000 employees

What has emerged in those 20 years has been what Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas calls one of its “most vital” call center operations.

Boen said the Abilene center has become recognized as a center of excellence for BCBSTX’s Federal employee program; so much so that they’ve consolidated all FEP operations into Abilene. In 2014, Montana FEP operations were added to the Abilene center.

“We won the University of Texas account in 2000,” Boen said. “We opened up that operation for UT with Abilene staffing.

And when we decided to get into the ACA (Affordable Care Act) marketplace, we added a considerable staff in Abilene to help support the retail line.”

Opened in February 1997, the Abilene center started with an initial cadre of 250 people, chosen from more than 1,000 applicants. An additional 250 started in April of that year. Today, the Abilene center boasts a staff of more than 1,000, all uniquely trained and qualified to answer the myriad questions that come in daily from BCBSTX’s members.

In 2009, BCBSTX piloted a “work from home” model with several of its employees, Boen said. These “more senior” employees have demonstrated an ability to meet production and quality standards in the main facility, and were given the opportunity to work from home, answering customer questions and providing claim service.

One of those hired in the initial employee group was Jackson Boen, who started as a customer advocate, and has risen through the ranks to the position he currently holds: Divisional Senior Vice President in the Service Delivery and Operations Division of Health Care Service Corp., BCBSTX’s parent company.

“We’ve gotten a lot better at this model, and as we continue to leverage technology, we are able to maintain the culture through email web chats, webinars, etc.,” he said.

In addition to serving their customers, BCBSTX employees are active in the local community, Bujanda said.

“Abilene was the first full service unit we opened,” said Boen, who noted that the Abilene FSU is also the largest operation outside of the regional headquarters in Richardson. “The company made a decision to expand beyond the regional headquarters into communities; and hired people from the local communities to better serve our members.”

The facility BCBSTX operates from is owned by the city of Abilene, and Boen said the collaboration with city agencies has been key in BCBSTX’s sustainability and growth over the years.

“DCOA (the Development Corporation of Abilene) was key to getting BCBS here,” he said, noting that BCBS pays very low rent in exchange for the jobs.

“Over the years, Abilene employees have been able to earn wages and salaries totaling in the tens of millions of dollars. The foresight of the DCOA and the half-cent sales tax were not only key in the initial decision to move to Abilene, but the continuing part-

How to Put Purpose and Passion Into Your Small Business

Proverbs are very useful in life and one of my favorites has always been, “Do what you love and the money will come.” Problem is, it’s a lot easier said than done and I haven’t witnessed this in action very much in my life.

In fact, what I have seen is quite the opposite.

Throughout my 20+ years in a recruiting and professional coaching career what has stood out for me is that most people want to be passionate about their work and, in fact, have known what they love since they were children, but are instead making a living in careers forged through a myriad of external circumstances that have little to do with what they love.

Most of us succumb to the wishes of our parents, society, culture, etc. We don’t really believe we can make a living doing what fills our hearts. I know I didn’t for a very long time. That is, until the pain of not doing something meaningful became greater than the fear of taking the biggest risk of my life so that I could experience love and joy again in my work.

The small business enterprise I started 15 years ago was founded on the vision that we could do our business with purpose and passion. And we do. But this takes courage and intention every minute of every day. We are successful, profitable and growing.

What we do changes lives and makes the world a better place. But the road here has not been traversed without pain. Well, I am here to tell you that, after all these years, I have learned that another infamous proverb “No pain, no gain,” is a lie.

Or at the very least, it doesn’t have to be true.

I have come to understand that much of the source of the difficulties I have had as a business owner have had at their core a central belief that making a living doing what I love is hard. It is as hard, as difficult and as improbable as you believe it to be. Period.

To shift a belief - and that is what it will take you have to start somewhere.

That somewhere is now, right here where you are in this moment.

My belief is that purpose and passion have ects that align with who you really are. nothing to do with circumstance.
