The Abilene Zoo’s new wheelchair-accessible train is making tracks around the zoo this weekend.

About the Abilene Zoo: The Abilene Zoo is home to more than 1000 animals of 250 different species. The zoo is open 7 days a week (closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last admittance is 4 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4.50 for children ages 3-12, $6 for seniors aged 60 and older. Abilene Biologist Studies Impact Of Drought

Texas is recovering from one of the worst droughts in state history thanks to record rainfall last year. But the impact of sustained drought doesn’t just affect water levels. One biologist in Abilene is investigating how changes in climate affect the ecosystem of reservoirs in Central West Texas.

On a recent Saturday morning, McMurry University Assistant Professor Dr. Terrence Boyle and his student, Brianna Littlefield, skimmed across Hubbard Creek Lake by motorboat. Their lake trip included stops at ten sites on the water where Boyle left modified minnow traps to collect all kinds of organisms from their habitat below the surface.

The motor rumbled to a stop as he pulled up to shore at site number one. Wearing waders, he sloshed around following GPS coordinates to find the trap nestled on the lake bottom. It was hoisted it up then the contents were spilled out on a tray in the boat.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Small rocks tumbled out of the trap, Boyle pushed them around and pointed to tiny wiggling dots on the tray.

“That’s actually a copepod,” Boyle said as he bent over the tray with Littlefield. “See the little bity thing that’s moving right here.

Copepods are one of the most common food sources for larval fish.”

Boyle is working on his research project titled, “Macrobenthic Surveys of 12 Big Country Reservoirs.” His goal is to establish a baseline data set for plankton, periphyton and macrobenthic organisms found in local reservoirs.

Or as Boyle puts it- he studies the ecology of “all the little critters without a backbone.” His research also records changes in the ecology of each lake over time, and in West Texas, that means through periods of drought.

“That’s one of the big questions as far as across the board that we don’t really understand is, what is the impact of the drought?”

Boyle said.

Texans know what it means to survive a farming season during a drought, and they are familiar with water restrictions for watering lawns.

“But we don’t understand is what effect did it actually have in these lakes,” Boyle said.

People often assume that if some water remains in a lake, despite drops in the level, then the fish are OK and everything is normal.

But Boyle said the drought might be affecting a lot of the insect larvae in lakes because a loss of water is a loss of habitat.

Texas is currently drought free according to Texas climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon, but Boyle’s research is a fouryear-project, during which he’ll be able to compile a significant amount of information about area lakes. He revisits each lake every three months to collect from the traps and record differences in life between seasons.

While he’s not alone in collecting samples from the reservoirs, he is the only person focusing on biological data. When it comes down to it though, Boyle really doesn’t mind what he pulls up from a trap or finds under a microscope, for him just being engaged with nature is enough motivation to keep up the time-consuming research.

“A lot of people look at West Texas and think it’s ugly but we’re sitting on the middle of this lake and it’s gorgeous,” Boyle said. “It’s a beautiful morning, you got to see the beauty around you and this allows me to do that.”

Abilene city council to hear library plan for Lincoln Middle School

Plans for a library at Lincoln Middle School have been circulating around for years since it was closed in 2007.

Thursday, the Abilene City Council will hear how transforming Lincoln to a library could be possible.

It’s part of a strategic plan for the city’s libraries. It is the first potential plan for Lincoln’s future on paper.

“The potential that Lincoln could bring to Abilene is very exciting,” said Lesli Andrews, director of community services for the city of Abilene. “It’s a great opportunity for the citizens of Abilene and Abilene’s library system.”

Jay Riley takes his granddaughter to the library downtown often and said it’s a great way to spend time together.

He welcomed the idea of the main library moving to South 1st Street and Grape Street.

“I think that would be a great use,” Riley said. “It would be something that would work well for the kids.”

The strategic plan for Abilene’s libraries is something that is going to take more time, planning, and discussion before anything can be finalized. The city, along with the Abilene Preservation League wants to keep that building active in the community, Andrews said. “[Libraries] bring the world to the kids,” said Andrews. “The people, the literacy, and so anytime that we can be a part of that, it’s a wonderful thing.”

The city said money to renovate Lincoln Middle School could come from public fundraising campaigns.

McMurry University senior Jeremiah Flynn invites you to his senior art exhibition “The Manipulation of eh Right Hemisphere” April 17-22, 2016, in the Amy Graves Ryan Gallery. The show will feature recent works of film and digital photography.

Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. An artist’s talk will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, April 17, and a reception is scheduled from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the Amy Graves Ryan East Foyer.

Zoo welcomes Jaguar sisters

The Abilene Zoo staff is over the moon to show off two new stars: a pair of jaguars named Luna and Estrella.

The nine-month-old sisters recently came to Abilene from the Fort Worth Zoo, where they were born in May. The cats were introduced to their lair Monday and cautiously have been exploring their new home.

“We expect them to hide a lot during their first couple of weeks, so guests may have to search for them, ” explained Enrichment and Training Coordinator Liz Kellerman. “But don’t worry. Jaguars are active animals, and soon they will be climbing trees and playing in the pool.”

The Abilene Zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Jaguar Species Survival Plan (SSP), a conservation program that maintains a healthy, self-sustaining population of vulnerable animals to help prevent their extinction. Among the bond projects approved by Abilene voters last year was the upgrading of the zoo’s facilities to incorporate a jaguar breeding program. When Luna and Estrella reach maturity, the SSP will choose a mate for the females, and the Abilene Zoo will keep one breeding pair.

Jaguars historically are native to the southern United States. Due to habitat alteration, the jaguar can now only be found from the U.S./ Mexico border south into Central America.

A little slice of Africa in West Texas has taken about four years to realize

Abilene Zoo in October 2014 as part of the Species Survival Plan administered by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. He was born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and stands eighteen feet tall. It is hoped that adding Mesi to the herd will initiate a breeding program. Two females, Sunny and Jamie, also arrived in Abilene in February.

Mark your calendar for Saturday April 23 at 10:00 am. That’s when the new Giraffe Safari opens to the public at the Abilene Zoo and you won’t want to miss it.

According to Abilene Zoo Executive Director Bill Gersonde renovating the giraffe habitat has taken almost four years from the original concept to reality.

“The old exhibit was very outdated,” Bill says.

“It was unsafe for the animals and gave them limited space. But people loved feeding the giraffes and this will be an even better experience.”

Visitors can still feed the giraffes, but the snack will no longer be crackers. Just like many people, the giraffes are switching to healthier fare which will be Romaine lettuce.

“One of the problems with the old exhibit,” Bill says, “was controlling the giraffes’ weight. They were eating lots of crackers and didn’t have much room for exercise.”

The new giraffe habitat will include several additional species, making Giraffe Safari a little

Guinea Fowl and Aldabra tortoises.

New giraffes have also found their way from other zoos to relocate here in Abilene.

The exhibit housed two females when it closed for renovation and will now house six, including a three month old bull calf. The little guy’s new name, Kito, came from a contest run by the zoo. Kito means “precious gem” in Swahili.

Kito came to Abilene from the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas. He was unable to find his footing and nurse properly from his mother, so he has been bottle-fed.

He’s about six and a half feet tall and is beginning to eat solid food.

They stand in an area which will be dedicated to the late Amber Cree, a long-time Abilene Zoo advocate and volunteer.

Giraffe Safari also holds a space called Twiga Terrace to seat 120 people. Twiga means “giraffe” in Swahili. The area can be rented after hours for parties, dinners and wedding receptions.

“We think it will be the most unique venue in the city,” Bill says. “Being able to sit down to dinner with a giraffe watching you eat will be pretty darn cool.”

There’s been a lot more involved in Giraffe Safari than building new fences and barns. Even though construction is finished, many details will be addressed before April 23.

“It’s comparable to building a house for people,” Bill says, “but people with multiple needs and behaviors.”

The Giraffe Safari renovations cost about $3.8 million, much of which came from local donations.

“The reason we could do it,” Bill says, “is because of the community, the businesses, foundations and individuals who contributed. It’s amazing how the community got behind the project. That’s also the reason the project has progressed so quickly. It would usually take three to four years for fundraising but we were able to do in a year and half.”

If you can’t make the grand opening on April 23, you’ll have many opportunities to visit the giraffes in the future. With the growth of landscaping and babies of the giraffes, monkeys, antelope and other species there will something new at the Abilene Zoo for years to come.

The commander of the 8th Air Force visited Dyess Feb. 15-17 to meet with Airmen from across the 7th Bomb Wing to commend them for their efforts and to learn how they support the “Mighty Eighth’s” mission.

During his visit, Maj. Gen. Richard Clark toured different squadrons to meet face-toface with Airmen and used it as an opportunity to thank Airmen for their hard work and dedication to service and mission support.

“It was great to be recognized by Maj. Gen. Clark and I took it as team recognition for all of command post,” said Capt. Brandi Hicks 7th Bomb Wing Command Post chief. “Maj. Gen. Clark was very appreciative of all the hard work put in from command and control.”

Clark began his visit at the 7th Bomb Wing Headquarters where he was given a wing mission brief. Clark also visited the bases’ Deployment Control Center and 7th Operations Support Squadron vault to tour the facilities.

Clark then stopped by the 28th Bomb Squadron, where he was once stationed from 1994 to 1997 as a B-1 Instructor Pilot at the B-1 Flight Training Unit. There, he operated the

The Airmen of the 7th Bomb Wing came to know Maj. Gen. Clark on a more personal and professional level during his visit to Dyess, as he spoke about his family, leadership views and what it truly means to be bomber Airman.

“He makes you feel comfortable,” Hicks said.

Relay for Life is therapeutic for survivor

When I was 28 years old I began having symptoms of colon cancer. I mentioned my symptoms to my primary care doctor several times for the next 2 years and he continued to say, “You’re too young for cancer”.

In 2013, I decided this was the year that I was going to get my life in order, I was going to go to a REAL hairstylist, I was going to start taking care of my body, and I was going to get my hemorrhoids removed (that’s what I thought I had). When I went to see the colorectal surgeon, I jokingly said, “ My biggest fear is that I have been walking around with colon cancer and nobody cares”. My biggest fear came true. I was diagnosed with Stage 2 colon cancer.

I try not to dwell on the fact that I had cancer but instead embrace the fact that I am a survivor and I am blessed with God’s grace everyday.

Jody Addy walks through a metal detector, waits for a pat down, shows her ID and passes through locked gates before walking into her classroom, which is in the middle of a maximum-security prison in west central Texas.

Since 1995, Addy has walked the same path to teach literacy skills at the Robertson Unit, an all-male prison. It’s a job she once spurned but now has held for more than 20 years at the prison. The congenial 47-year-old was honored this fall for teaching excellence in the Windham School District, which serves inmates throughout Texas.

One day, Addy and a friend were checking out the Texas Prison Museum during a break from class. Among the exhibits: Texas’ electric chair, “Old Sparky,” a Texas Prison Rodeo exhibit and displays about the state’s infamous criminals.

But, for Addy, another stood out. “We came upon this exhibit for Windham School District,” she recalled. “I was getting a certificate, but I didn’t know if I was going to teach. I looked at that and said, ‘Man, I’m never gonna teach there,’ really loud.”

Inmates in Windham programs typically function at a sixth-grade level, are in their early 30s and have little or no confidence that they will find employment after being released, according to a district performance report. Many also don’t see a productive future for themselves.

The district’s mission: to prevent inmates from offending again by giving them skills to lead more honest lives after being released.

Addy said that when she tells people about her job, most are encouraged that there’s a way to help transition offenders “from criminality to a life of civility.”

But “you always have someone who says, ‘Why? Lock them up and throw away the key,’” she said.

As a college student in Huntsville, Addy imagined she’d hate the job she has now.

Addy’s colleagues say she stands out not because of her longevity but because of her compassion and innovative teaching style. She can compress history, math and everyday life lessons into a three-hour class period.

Grigsby said he wants to be an example for his children and grandchildren. His job interests include painting, air conditioning and woodwork.

“I want to hold that certificate and show it to my kids and grandkids and say, ‘Hey, this is it,’” he said. “Put a smile on their faces.”

With a 10th-grade education, Cleggan Ware, 34, said he didn’t appreciate at first Windham’s value. Now, he’s trying to better understand math and wants another chance to use his barber and construction skills.

“I didn’t think it was important,” he said.

“I didn’t want for nothing. I could just sell drugs.” Ware is serving a seven-year sentence for tampering with a government document.

A Big Country man has been chosen to compete on a national reality TV show which will put his physical fitness to the test.

Bennie Wylie, 39, of Tuscola, Texas, will be one of “10 of the most elite male fitness trainers in the nation” appearing on NBC’s “STRONG” series, a fitness competition that pairs a trainer with a woman wanting to lose weight and get mentally and physically stronger.

Wylie was chosen to compete with Jill May, a Minnesota mother of four who was once active and athletic in college but has let herself go with the stress of parenting. She now wants to get back in shape to be an inspiration for moms everywhere.

Wylie and May will face challenges side-by-side that are designed to push them to the limits of their strength, endurance, and mental stamina.

Weekly transformations will be revealed, and one team will get sent home every week until the winning pair remains. This dynamic duo will take home a $500,000 cash prize.

The show will be hosted by Professional volleyball player and fitness expert Gabrielle Reece and will debut with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, April 13th.

Bennie Wylie is a strength and conditioning coach in Abilene, Texas. He has trained some of the best athletes in the world and is excited to bring that expertise and discipline to “STRONG.” Wylie has been a dedicated athlete since his school days.

While attending Sam Houston State University, he was team captain and running back of the football team, a four-year letterman and was named the Bearkats’ Freshman of the Year in 1994. Fresh out of college, Wylie became an assistant with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and then assumed the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Texas Tech University. Later, at the University of Tennessee, he guided the development of 14 NFL draft picks, including Wes Welker, Danny Amendola and Michael Crabtree. He also served as the strength and conditioning coach at the University of Texas. Wylie has also played a part in coaching more than 100 collegiate football players, grooming them for careers in the NFL. Wylie has overcome the hardships of growing up poor in a small town with an abusive, alcoholic father, but these hardships did not stop him from becoming a strong, compassionate and tough-loving coach with zero tolerance for excuses and a will for greatness. Wylie is also a loving husband and father of three.

I became involved in community organizations such as the Kiwanis, the Sweetwater Leadership program, church, and I am currently on a competing dance team, teach cardio drumming, zumba, and a body jam class at our Sweetwater Rolling Plains Wellness Center. It is truly an honor for me to combine my family, friends, education, health, and faith to impact the Sweetwater Community.

In January 2014, I had a stroke that was attributed to a hole in my heart, that I didn’t know I had. This was a complete scare to my entire family. Thankfully, I recovered very quickly from surgery, with ZERO side effects. I tell this story because sometimes we take the smallest things in life for granted, including a smile, the ability to walk, talk, etc. So I encourage people to follow their dreams, and live their life to the fullest. Challenges in life help you become a stronger person and help you to rely on your faith.

5) What is your biggest passion in regards to education? My passion is

the children. Once a student is in my school, I treat them as if they are a child of my own.

I want them to feel loved and pursue their dreams as well as develop academic and lifelong skills that will enable them to be the best and most successful person they can be in their future.

6) Why is early childhood education so important? Early childhood is very im-

portant. Students learn the foundation skills in early childhood including social, emotional, cognitive, and developmental skills that build upon their character and future.

8) What advice would you give to parents in regards to early childhood education? The key to being a successful

parent is to stay involved and active in your child’s life, be supportive of their interests, as well as use every moment as learning opportunity. This would include activities as simple as going to McDonalds and recognizing the letter “M” on the McDonald’s sign. Garrett promoted executive director of elementary ed

Austin Elementary School principal Carla Garrett has been named the new Executive Director of Elementary Education for the Abilene Independent School District.

Garrett, a 32-year veteran educator, will remain as principal at Austin until the end of the 2015-16 school year.

“Mrs. Garrett is uniquely qualified to assume this role,” Superintendent Dr. David Young said. “She will do an amazing job of supporting the work being done at the elementary level across the entire Abilene Independent School District.”

Before moving into administration, Garrett was a classroom teacher at all levels - elementary, middle school and high school. She has been the principal at Austin since 2012.

Young said that the search for the next principal will begin immediately, utilizing a collaborative process involving campus staff, parents, students and district administrators.

Garrett joined Abilene ISD in 2010 as an assistant principal at Abilene High School. She first became an

Eric I. Bruntmyer has been selected as the 16th President of Hardin-Simmons University by action of the university’s Board of Trustees during their regular Spring meeting on February 26th.

Bruntmyer, 47, currently serves as the Vice President for Financial Affairs and Chief Financial Officer for Dallas Baptist University.

He will begin his new role on June 1, and will succeed Dr. Lanny Hall, who will assume new duties as HSU’s Chancellor upon his departure from the presidency.

Dr. Michael Waters, Chair of HSU’s Board of Trustees and the university’s Presidential Search Committee, made the official announcement at a luncheon immediately following Friday’s Trustee meeting.

“After a national search and consideration of a large candidate pool, it is our belief that Mr. Bruntmyer’s professional strengths and personal character will serve HSU well for years to come,” said Waters. “His academic credentials, legal training, and servant’s heart provide a unique opportunity for continuing HSU’s commitment to Christian higher education in the Liberal Arts tradition.”

From flipping through family photo albums to scrolling through social media, pictures have always allowed us to share experiences and reflect on how far we’ve come. It’s important to remember a picture is a reflection of our past actions, but it is the power of people in the present by which we determine our future.

Going forward the status quo of education can no longer be tolerated by our community, and good enough can no longer be considered as such. Our current picture reflects nearly forty percent of students with an at risk indicator, over one thousand homeless students and many being economically disadvantaged.

Students challenged with low grades and poor attendance are portrayed as lazy, unintelligent or apathetic instead of struggling and in-need.

Abilene’s many dedicated, caring and capable teachers, faculty and staff are working to improve the lives of our community’s children, but we believe we can do more together.

Communities In Schools is a network of passionate professionals working in our local schools to surround our students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Over the next few months, we will highlight how each student success coach is implementing programs and building meaningful relationships with students to ensure success. Everyone on the front lines, teachers, faculty and staff, are working diligently to provide students with a brighter future, but there is strength in numbers. A passionate and caring community surrounding and supporting our students, and the direct link to them, will only provide

greater results for our community. Only together is it possible to change the picture of education for our students. These are the children who will grow up to become next generation career leaders. It makes sense to ensure future prosperity by taking care of the hands which hold that future. Students should be inspired to continue to improve the lives of others because it is what Abilene does for our students and it’s what was done for them.

They should be encouraged and inspired by the community to rise up and grasp the opportunities in front of them. We, the people of Abilene, hold the power to change the picture, and we do not want to create a future where we look back and say we could have done better.

Barriers inside and outside of the classroom will always leave some students at risk of dropping out. However, it is not crazy to believe in a one hundred percent graduation rate. It is not wild to strive for a one hundred percent attendance rate, and it is not beyond reason to aspire for our graduates to go on to bigger and better things. It takes community involvement to cement success.

Business leaders bring financial literacy lessons to Lee Elementary

Local business representatives, civic leaders and professionals joined forces Wednesday, Feb. 24, to bring financial literacy lessons to students of Lee Elementary School as part of Junior Achievement of Abilene’s “JA in a Day” program.

Students will be introduced to basic financial education principles such as American currency, how money enters their home, the difference between “wants” and “needs,” why saving is important, how banks work and more.

Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to providing economic education to school age children (K – 12th grade).

By Abilene Independent School District The Foreign Languages Department held its first induction ceremony in 40 years Wednesday for new members of the Beta Sigma chapter of Sigma Pi Delta.

HSU’S chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society was founded in 1949, but it has not been active since 1977. It is the 66th of 610 chapters across the country.

The chapter inducted three students: Madison Copeland, Grace Hebert and Sarah Philips. Two HSU faculty also received an honorary induction: history professor Dr. Tiffany Fink and Dr. Alan Stafford, dean of the Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts.

HSU’s chapter of Sigma Delta Pi had not been active since 1977, according to Dr. Mark P. Del Mastro, executive director of the Sigma Delta Pi organization based in Charleston, South Carolina.

“We are happy for having reactivated our HSU Beta Sigma Chapter,” said Spanish professor Dr. Rosario Hall. “We are looking forward to taking advantage of a variety of opportunities offer to our students of Spanish through Sigma Delta Pi.” Members of Sigma Delta Pi will have access to undergraduate study abroad awards, graduate research grants, a joint Sigma Delta Pi-

Max Lucado will come to ACU on April 25 to accept the “Friend of the Year” award from the Friends of ACU Library and to help inaugurate the Max Lucado Collection at the ACU library.

Michaela Rummel Receives Dr. Sandra S. Harper Women’s Leadership Scholarship

Michaela Rummel, a junior music education major from Abilene, has been selected by McMurry University to receive the Dr. Sandra Harper Women’s Leadership Scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year.

The Dr. Sandra Harper Women’s Leadership Scholarship was established by women leaders in the Abilene area in honor of the inauguration of Dr. Sandra Harper as McMurry University’s 12th president and in recognition of the accomplishments of outstanding women leaders. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a female student at McMurry who has excelled in the classroom and who has distinguished herself through service on campus and in the Abilene community.

Applicants were required to complete an application process and submit a 500-word essay regarding their interpretation of “Women Leading for the Greater Good.”

Rummel has a 3.83 overall grade point average while being active on campus as secretary and pledge mistress of Pi Delta Phi women’s social club, a tutor in the academic enrichment center and being a worship band assistant and youth sponsor at her church.

The scholarship is funded through proceeds from the annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon.

Five organ donors respond to Alvarez’ need 4 | COMMUNITY | HispanicLife l Abilene/BigCountry

In his spare time, Abel Alvarez (’82) is a mobile-learning consultant who knows well the power of social media. But the minister in McAllen, Texas, is still amazed at the quick response by the Abilene Christian University community to his critical search for a kidney donor.

A mid-day post March 2 on the ACU Today blog described his urgent need to find someone who also shared his O negative blood type – the rarest of all. By that evening he had been contacted by two willing donors, and now has five from across Texas. One is an alumnus and two have ACU students in their household or extended family.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for this quick and generous response,” Alvarez said. “You may have saved my life.”

Alvarez has begun making arrangements with Methodist Speciality and Transplant Hospital in San Antonio for the procedure, which includes medical tests for him and donor prospects to ensure a best-fit match.

He has lived for 29 years with the donated kidney of a sibling, but the organ recently failed.

Alvarez is not a good candidate for longterm dialysis treatments, so his future depends on another transplant.

A generosity.com page about the ACU trustee has been created so friends can help with the $75,000 tab not covered by Alvarez’ health insurance.

“I would not be alive today without the support years ago of the ACU community when I first needed a transplant. I hope God is not through with me yet, and am praying there are friends in the university network who will once again step up to help.” Alvarez said. “I sincerely appreciate the love, prayers and assistance being offered on my behalf.”

Abilene Christian Schools is where we find a teacher who is helping students get through what some would say are the toughest things kids have to tackle; math and high school.

Mabry has taught math for 27 years at AISD, and now 14 years at ACHS. But that’s not what students like Steven say matters most.

It’s the time she takes to get involved in the kids’ lives and genuinely care about them.

Channeling Your Inner Superhero

Sometimes you just need to channel your inner superhero.

Three-year old, Carlos Martinez, channeled his inner superhero, Batman, and beat cancer.

“It was a routine checkup by his pediatrician,” Joshua Martinez, Carlos’ father, said. “She felt a lump in his stomach.”

After receiving x-rays and an ultra sound of his stomach, they found out Carlos had large masses on both of his kidneys. The pediatrician sent Carlos to Cook Children’s Health Care Center in Dallas, Texas to be treated.

“Of course, as a parent, you have to worry that your kid will have to go through this for a long time, but the way he acted through it all gave us all hope that he would be okay,” Joshua said.

The doctors were very confident throughout the process that Carlos would be able to defeat cancer. He received his final chemo treatment on February 12 and was considered to be in remission on Feb. 26. Carlos defeated cancer.

“He lost his hair and everything,” Joshua said.

“Now he has hair and it is hard to tell that anything was ever wrong with him.”

Once at Cook Children’s, Carlos received the diagnosis of a Wilms’ tumor, which is rare together to give Carlos a kidney cancer that primarily affects children. Find Your Purpose in the “Rabbit Holes”

Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” was the theme for a ladies retreat at which I recently spoke. After watching the movie numerous times, I found myself drawn to Alice’s responses to falling down a rabbit hole.

One, Alice had to face the unknown. There was no going back. Two, Alice had choices she could curl up in a ball and hope someday to wake up or be rescued, or she could look for ways out - perhaps a door even. Three, Alice had a sense of wonderment during this strange journey; actually, she said it was “curious-er and curious-er.”

Four, she had clues along the way - signs that said “eat me” or “drink me.” Five, Alice found tools along her way - a bottle of potion a piece of cake and a key. Six, Alice realizes that her being in Wonderland was to accomplish a purpose - even if it was just a dream. Her purpose was to slay the Jabberwocky. If she refused, all of Wonderland would be changed forever - for the worse.

Of course, we know the ending of the story.

Alice finds the power and strength within and the courage to fight for the “Mad as Hatter” inhabitants of Wonderland.

Have you found yourself in a rabbit hole?

Maybe you slipped and fell into this predicament you are in now. Maybe you jumped with both feet into the rabbit hole - expecting wonderful, romantic things and now you are facing some harsh realities about marriage and blending your family. Maybe you were pushed into a rabbit hole - as I felt I was when my first husband died. No matter how you got in your rabbit hole -- let’s look at how to find your way out!

One, there is no way back. That is the attitude I took after I married Dan. I jumped into that rabbit hole - marrying him and becoming a step mom so confidently. It took only weeks for me to realize I was in an unknown place but backing out was not an option for me.

Two, I had some choices. I could lock myself in my room until Dan’s kids moved out, or I could look for ways to move forward.

Three, I tried to keep my wonderment to find ways to have fun with this new family and look for reasons to laugh.

Four, I had clues along the way. I found signs that encouraged me to ‘read this’ or ‘sing that’.

Five, I was provided with tools for my journey - a Bible to find scripture to help or comfort me, a counselor who gave godly ad-

vice. I also started a journal that helped me put my thoughts down and sort out my feelings.

Six, I found my purpose! Through this rabbit hole, I realized my journey, my voice, could be used to help others in their place of the unknown.

I think I’m going to appreciate Alice and her journey in Wonderland. It really has opened my eyes to be prepared for the next rabbit hole I end up in.

I have also seen that the rabbit holes are God’s way of preparing me for what’s next in life - to help me be more ‘usable’ to Him for Him and His purposes. I love this saying, “God will not protect you from what He will perfect you through.”

Each rabbit hole experience teaches me many things. My first husband’s death taught me about love, being responsible, and drawing closer to God. My blended family has taught me so much also - compassion, understanding, and a bigger picture of how God works in my life.

All the rabbit holes I’ve ever been in we’re definitely the unknown to me. Sometimes scared. Sometimes giddy with anticipation but still clueless. But, “You don’t have to be afraid of the unknown. It is unknown only to you. God is well aware of where you are and of every step He is asking you to take.”

It is sometimes in the rabbit holes you find your purpose. It is sometimes in the rabbit holes you find what an amazing, precious God He is. It is sometimes in the rabbit holes you find out what you are really made of through Jesus Christ. And just as Alice slayed the Jabberwocky and found her voice, courage and strength, God will lead you to that as well - and that is pure, precious victory!

The justifications for the absent dad may be plentiful but so are the consequences to his kids. [Tweet This] This is not a message to judge or to be critical of men who find themselves separated from their family. This is an encouragement to educate and to motivate men to hear the call to battle on behalf of their children. We understand all the obstacles that are set up against you. While there may be obstacles, the consequences to the children remain. Only their dad can change the odds.

Some of those consequences are increased chances of depression, behavioral issues, insecurity, bad grades, and higher dropout rates.

Both boys and girls are equally susceptible.

The natural order of the family is for the man to have authority (not power) to lead and, when that authority is abdicated, a vacuum is created that will certainly be filled elsewhere.

That’s when things can go awry. There aren’t many gang members or women in the sex industry who come from homes with a strong dad in place. This is a plea for men to find a way to lead: for men to reconcile, to compromise, to be strong, to be humble, and to give their children the love and direction they so desperately need. When we don’t, the consequences can last for generations. Here are

some of the most common consequences:

Bad Behavior

The CDC says, “85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes.” That is a huge statistic and shouldn’t go unnoticed. Children need a dad to be the anchor that stabilizes their youth as they are pulled in every direction. The U.S. Census Bureau says 43% of US children live without their father. That is a tremendous amount of kids being left wide open to the troubles that beckon them.

Education Woes

Seventy-one percent (71%) of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes, according to the National Principals Association Report on the State of High Schools. It is no guarantee that children with involved dads won’t struggle in school. However, when dad is not in the picture to lead and guide his children, the likelihood of scholastic trouble skyrockets. The reason for that is more psychological than lack of intelligence. The feeling of abandonment leaves a child unable to trust.

Lack of trust leads to recklessness which can take many possible paths. Those successful in crime are some of the most intelligent people

in the world. Most of them never finished high school.

Sex, Sex, Sex

This society is completely saturated in sexual innuendo that reaches all the way down to the elementary level. We all have our own opinions about sex including when and where it is appropriate. However, at the very least, I think the overwhelming majority of parents would agree they don’t want their children sexually active before they are emotionally mature. The Department of Health and Human Services reports that 71% of pregnant teens have no dad present in their life. Most teenage girls that are sexually active are looking for something far deeper than what their hormones are screaming. They will find no shortage of young men eager to give them the illusion they can find it in them.

Abilene teen gets surprised with free braces for birthday

An Abilene teenager got a birthday gift that is sure to make her smile ear to ear.

Brooke Zeman was named the first student to receive free braces from the “Smiles for a Lifetime” foundation and Lee Orthodontics Thursday, the same day she turned 14.

The average price tag for a set of braces is $5,000, which Brooke’s family couldn’t afford.

Brooke’s mother, Karen Zeman, said mounting medical bills from years of costly corrective dental surgery forced her family to move from Connecticut to Texas to cut their living expenses. The family’s lack of finances put braces for Brooke out of reach.

“I’m so happy my parents don’t have to pay, it means a lot to me,” Brooke said.

When her family arrived in Abilene, Brooke enrolled at Wylie Junior High and met Communities in Schools staffer Kelsey Phillips. Phillips encouraged her to apply for the “Smiles for A Lifetime” giveaway.

“She has so many goals and one of her goals is just smiling,” Phillips said. “In every picture we’ve ever taken together, she closes her mouth and I just wanted to help her get that confidence to just smile.”

The braces aren’t entirely free, Brooke is required to volunteer with a non-profit organization for 20 hours in exchange to her new smile.

“She’ll be able to go off to high school with a nice smile that will stay with her a lifetime, which is wonderful,” Karen said.

A board of committee members reviews applications and selects two winners every quarter of the year.

Relay for Life helps raise funds for the fight against cancer

The event has music and even several Food Trucks that come out and donate a portion of the proceeds to our cause. It’s an awesome, family-friendly event for the entire community.

2. When and where will the event be held? This year’s Relay For Life of Abilene will take place on Friday, April 29th at Hardin Simmons Intramural Field. The event kicks off with an opening ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Abilene dermatologist says he’s treated 2 cases

Any parent who’s had to deal with lice knows how hard it can be to get rid of the bugs.

“Horrible, very horrible because you have to sit through and pick them out three or four hours at a time, try to get them all,” said Crystal Salazar, recalling times she has taken care of her children’s lice.

Now, “super lice,” a mutant form of lice that’s resistant to over-the-counter treatments, has been found in 25 states, including Texas.

“It’s not common, but it is something I have come across,” said Dr. Paras Ramolia, a dermatologist at Abilene Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center.

Ramolia said he’s treated two cases of “super lice.” He said you can treat it by nit picking -- hand picking the lice out -- or with a device that dehydrates and kills the lice using heat.

He said there are also prescription medicines available.

“It comes in a pill form and then also comes in a lotion in form that you can apply to the scalp and it helps kill the lice,” Ramolia said.

Abilene ISD Director of Health Services Linda Langston said the district has policies in place to handle lice cases.

“If a child is symptomatic and are found to have live bugs or nits closer than a quarter of an inch to the scalp those children are sent home,” Langston said.

“It’s really hard to get rid of them, and you have to go through … shampooing and cleaning out their hair, brushing it out, washing all your laundry,” said Carmen Hernandez, who has seen family members experience the trouble of lice.

Langston said letters are sent to parents if more than 20 percent of a classroom has lice. She said lice cases mostly happen in elementary schools, and kids aren’t allowed back at school until they’re lice-free.

It’s a policy Hernandez agrees with, especially now with “super lice” among us.

“I hope they stay clean and they don’t get it because it’s really hard to get rid of,” Hernandez said.

Hearing Procedure Performed For The First Time at Abilene Regional Teenager, Gage Hoskins hears a whole new world.

Fifteen-year-old Gage Hoskins doesn’t need the radio at top volume anymore but, as a normal teenager, he still likes his music loud. In December Gage underwent a procedure newly available in Abilene, which changed his hearing and his life completely.

Gage has struggled with hearing problems all his life as well as constant ear infections. These problems affected his speech as well.

“It sounded like everybody was wearing a mask,” is how Gage describes his hearing before his surgery.

His mom Tracy says they had been to many doctors before they consulted Jason Acevedo, M.D., an otolaryngologist at Abilene Regional Medical Center.

The procedure takes about thirty to forty-five minutes and can be done as outpatient surgery.

A small titanium implant is inserted in the bone behind the ear. After healing, a sound processor can be attached by magnet atop the implant. The sound processor can be attached and removed for showering, sleeping and other activities.

Dr. Acevedo specializes in surgery and has significant experience working with patients receiving implantable devices to enhance their ability to hear. Dr. Acevedo first performed surgery to clear the infection from Gage’s ears.

Then he suggested a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (Baha) as a solution to Gage’s hearing problems.

Gage is a freshman at Sweetwater High School where his new hearing device has made a major difference in his habits.

“I usually had to sit at the front of the class,” he says. “Now I can sit anywhere and hear the teacher perfectly.”

Gage’s dad, Dusty, immediately noticed a difference. After the first adjustment of Gage’s new Baha device at West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Dusty and Gage climbed into Dusty’s pick-up.

“He kept asking, ‘What’s that noise?’ Then I realized he was hearing road noise. He’d never heard it before. Now he has no excuse when I tell him to take out the trash or clean his room,” Dusty says with a smile.

When asked what kind of difference the implant has made in his life, Gage’s answer is simple but meaningful.

“I can hear,” he says.

Frank Argumaniz Jr., 40, completed his earthly journey and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 06, 2016.

Frank was born on October 15, 1975 in Dallas, Texas – a true blessing and first child to Frank and Margaret Argumaniz. As a child, Frank was known to be a character, leaving behind many fond memories to share. As a youth, Frank was involved with the community and ministries of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He remained steadfast in his faith in God throughout his life. Through his youth and young adulthood, Frank was an avid hobbyist who enjoyed collecting sports cards and assembling model cars in his spare time.

Frank remained a sports fan and frequently watched and attended sporting events. He had a special place in his heart for football, especially the Dallas Cowboys and Oregon Ducks. He was known to be a supporter of the underdog. As a young man, Frank began his career as Pharmacy Technician, a vocation he loved and his dedication was reflected in his ethic and quality of work. Graduating at the top of his class, he began work and even returned for a short time as an instructor. His supervisors, coworkers, and students regarded him as a hard worker, caring mentor, and wonderful instructor.

He was very well loved by all those who had the chance to meet him in this life, and was remembered for his genuine and generous spirit. He will also be remembered for his love of music and dancing, his wonderful and caring smile, his sense of humor, and his willingness to help someone in need. Above all earthly things, Frank was devoted to and carried a deep love for his family and spending quality time with them. Frank was a devoted and beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin. Survivors include his wife, Jessica Argumaniz; parents Frank L. Argumaniz and Margaret; one brother, Samuel Argumaniz and a nation of uncles, aunts cousins and friends.

Mr. Argumaniz was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Manuel and Maria Argumaniz and maternal grandmother, Gumezinda DeLoera. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude towards the

Cecil H. Herrera, 68, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016. Cecil was born December 05, 1947, in Anson, Texas, to Manuel and Emma Hernandez Herrera. At the age of 16, Cecil started cutting hair and decided to make it his profession. He became well known in the community as the years went by as a great barber, musician, and trapper. For a man coming from an era that work and survival came before education, Cecil accomplished a lot in life writing a trapping book and using his creativity and eagerness to learn many trades. He played guitar for many of the surrounding bands, loved reading, had a special love for animals from being a trapper, never met a stranger, enjoyed barbecuing and never lacked humor to make everyone laugh. Printing for Life

One of Abilene’s best-kept secrets may be a business that bridges the gap between traditional by-hand printing and the digital age.

Tim De La Vega has been around the printing business all his life. As kids he and his siblings climbed on an old letterpress stored in the family’s garage. But putting two businesses together under one roof has taken him in a whole new direction.

Both members at Pioneer Baptist Church, Tim and Gayland Seton attend the same Bible study and serve on a leadership team together. Gayland is the former CEO of Independent Grocers and has also been a source of support.

Tim is the owner of H.V. Chapman and Sons Bookbinders and RAM Business Forms and Printing Services. The two businesses are housed at 802 North Third Street and employ eleven people including Tim. The two businesses function under the title of HVC & RAM LLC. Tim considers his work a ministry.

“And my wife,” Tim says.

“We talk everything over together.” Tim’s wife Gayla teaches second grade at Ortiz Elementary School.

“We feel like our business has a little bit of an anointing on it,” Tim says.

“We work with lots of self-published Christian authors. In our own way we’re helping further the kingdom by helping them.”

The business also includes family genealogies, county histories and other books of a personal nature. All the books printed by H.V. Chapman and Sons since it’s founding in 1947 line the walls of the building’s entry way.

7 Habits Of The Best Public Speakers Want to nail that next presentation? Use these seven tips.

Whether it’s a keynote speech for thousands or a sales meeting for a dozen, we’ve all seen speakers who keep the audience hanging on every word—and those who have their audiences counting the minutes until they can leave the room. Some folks at the front of the room are charismatic and engaging while others leave us dreading the next time we have to listen to anyone speak.

Public speaking, whether it’s on a stage or in a conference room, isn’t some magical, innate skill, says renowned speaking coach Joan Detz, author of How to Write and Give a Speech. When you look behind the curtain, you’ll see that many great speakers have similarities in how they present and perform.

1. THEY GET IN THE ZONE.

“The single most important thing a great presenter does is carve out a quiet space before stepping out onto that stage or platform,” Detz says. You need some time to mentally rehearse and get ready so you’re energetic and focused instead of frazzled and distracted, she says.

2. THEY MAKE SURE TO NAIL THE FIRST AND LAST 30 SECONDS. The brain can only absorb what the butt can endure—and if you’re pontificating for more than 20 minutes, you’ve lost your audience, she says. Ask your audience questions or have them ask you questions, get them moving, or otherwise change up how you’re interacting with them based on how long you feel you can keep them engaged.

7. THEY DON’T PRETEND TO BE SOMEONE THEY’RE NOT.

Whatever you do, don’t be a phony, NewellLegner says. People will sense when you’re pretending or adopting a style that really isn’t you. Instead, be the best you possible when delivering your message.

HELP COMBAT IDENTITY THEFT

Adulting is hard. I get it. It’s the same thing, day in and day out. You go to work to pay the bills. You pay the bills to live. You live to sleep. You sleep to go to work. And if you get that far, great damn job.

Congratulations.

You’ve done the minimum. Now get ready. Because then Life starts. With a capital ‘L’. The definition of “successful” is going above the minimum.

Well, it’s my definition. “Overachiever” is the term I believe they use. To overachieve, we’re told to follow our dreams, love your family and friends, and do more than others think you can do. So now, after you’ve done aaaaall of that, congratulations again, you MAY be going above and beyond. Pursuing success, as they say, by doing what you can for yourself, for your family and for your career.

But no 5 Hour Energy drink, no Starbucks macchiato or Monster energy drink is going to replace the energy you’ll need to constantly keep up with life. Life is complicated and exhausting. It’s exhilarating and disappointing. It’s living and dying. It’s hot and cold. But most of all, Life is full of the little things. I’m writing this post to remind you of one thing. It’s that the little things in Life keep us refreshed. The little things in life remind us that the hardships in our world are worth battling. Don’t worry, I have examples I get one haircut a month. My whole life, I’ve either gone to the bargain $5.99 haircut shop or just cut it myself. (The bare minimum) but, being the adulting adult I am, I decided it was time for a change. About eight months ago, I thought I would try a real barbershop.

Not a chain. Not a Chili’s Bar and Grill. But a real, local, small business that may have talent. And who knows? Maybe I’ll get an experience other than the overworked, underpaid part-time waitress gave me that used to cut my hair. I had no idea…

I walk in. Truly Blessed Barber Shop.

Downtown. Midday. Beats playing in the background. A couple barbers ready for a days work. No sign in sheets. No fancy shampoos for sale. Just a couple of barbers, ready and eager to bring the experience

back. To give the talent back to the game.

Not a huge place. Four or five chairs. A couple TVs. Clean. Sodas to drink. I thought, “Great, a nice haircut. No lines. No distractions. Just a haircut and I’ll be on my way.”

A few steps in and Rob welcomes me in and lets me immediately have a seat.

“What are you thinking?” Rob asked.

“I don’t know man. I have to look profes-

sional. Maybe a comb over. “ “Alright. No worries.”

And off he went. Rob had perfected his craft. Chatting me up while all the while creating something on my head I’d never really thought could happen. Seriously. Some time later, it was over. After a hot towel, a shave and a little styling, I paid Rob, thanked him for his service and that was it. I walked out of the barbershop. It wasn’t until the drive home that I caught a glimpse of myself in the rear view mirror, and it was then that I realized. I’ve been refreshed. I had a deeper inhale. My pulse slowed ever so slightly. My foot was slower to depress the accelerator. I felt like I needed to take my time and cherish this moment. As with all the hustle and bustle of Life, I had forgotten to pay attention. A haircut just gave me a renewed sense of energy. Such a small thing. But it worked.

And me… oblivious.

Every once in awhile, I notice them. The small things. The small things that can change your day, if even a little. And this was one of them. A damn haircut. I tried to do some adulting and pay for a real hair-

cut and ended up getting a renewed sense of “let’s do this.” Rob and Chris and the whole crew and Truly Blessed didn’t know.

But it’s just what the doctor ordered. Like a cool breeze after a hellish storm. Like the feeling of brand new socks. Or, dare I say, the cold side of the pillow. It’s the small things like these that keep us going. It’s a small pit stop in our journey through daily life. Without them, we would never be human. We might as well be robots. Because whether you know it or not, the small things add up to big things, and the big things overcome the hard things, and the hard things make us who we are.

Rejoice in the fact that you’re alive to even experience it. It’s what makes us human. And then, the hard things don’t seem as hard. The stressful things don’t seem as stressful and success may be that much easier to find.

If you prepare your own return with tax software, you will probably see new log-on standards and additional security protection.

The IRS also knows identity theft is a frustrating process for victims. If you become a victim, the IRS is committed to resolving your case as quickly as possible.

What is tax-related identity theft?

Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses your stolen Social Security number to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund.

You may be unaware that this has happened until you e-file your return and discover that a return already has been filed using your SSN. Or, the IRS may send you a letter saying they have identified a suspicious return using your SSN.

Know the warning signs! Be alert to possible taxrelated identity theft if you are contacted by the IRS or your tax professional/provider about: More than one tax return was filed using your SSN. You owe additional tax, refund offset or have had collection actions taken against you for a year you did not file a tax return. IRS records indicate you received wages or other income from an employer for whom you did not work.

There’s a lot going on in Alex Terrell Russell’s life and she’s just getting started. Last October she married local geologist Justin Russell. Currently Vice President of Operations and Director of Marketing for Lytle Land and Cattle and Sharon’s Barbecue Restaurants, Alex was almost born into the restaurant business. She is Sharon Riley’s granddaughter.

“We want to continue the community life and spirit Sharon brought to the restaurants,” Alex says.

“She’s been working for over forty years. She wants to travel and she deserves that.”

Alex was born in Abilene, but moved to Nashville with her mother when her parents divorced. She graduated from high school and started college there but love for Texas called her back. After graduating from Texas Tech with a degree in public relations and marketing she joined the staff at Lytle Land and Cattle.

The restaurant’s General Manager of ten years Julie Teten decided she wanted to spend more time with her newborn daughter and moved out of the GM role into Office Manager. So Alex became General Manager when she graduated from college and served in that role until August 2015.

When Alex moved up to Vice President Telitha Ford, who had been with Lytle for more than ten years, became General Manager “I learned through a trial by fire,” she says, “but I wouldn’t have changed it.”

Alex now focuses on expanding Sharon’s restaurant vision. Lytle Land and Cattle has been open for fifteen years and employees about sixty-five people.

“Lytle is a relaxed place that celebrates all things local and Texas,” Alex says.

One of those Texas aspects is the straw cowboy hats that hang on the walls. Wait staff wears the hats when they are working. When they leave the restaurant, as many do because they are graduating college students, they mark their hats with their years of tenure and nickname or what they were know for. Then they hang their hats at the end of

“All our dishes were great but we had a lot of TexMex things. People really want to come to Lytle for steak or a good chicken fry. We’re focusing on what we’re really good at.”

Sharon’s Barbecue was born on Alex’s fourteenth birthday, July 10, 2005. It employees about twelve people under the direction of General Manager Daniel Rocha while Cheryl Brooks oversees the catering services and party room.

“One of the things that helped make my decision to come here,” Alex says, “was coming home from college to help with catering the first Abilene Dancing with the Stars. We served 1,300 people in about twenty minutes. It was such a rush.”

Sharon’s Barbeque will be opening another location

“We’ll have the same menu and pretty much the same layout,” Alex says, “except for a large covered patio and a full service bar. People can eat good food, hang out, watch the game.”

Sharon’s Party Room on Highway 80 is getting an update with new decorating scheme and paint. It seats eighty and hosts everything from wedding receptions to baby showers.

Some people may think the restaurant business is just about the food but not Alex.

Alex says her favorite thing about her job is “the people, for sure. I love our crew. I made my best friends at Lytle. We have a really good rapport. It makes the tense moments more bearable. There’s not a day I don’t see a friend come in.”

Friends are what you’ll find at Lytle Land and Cattle and Sharon’s Barbeque. Plus a whole lot of good food.

She decided to open a myRA account after her human resources manager told her about the program. With the help of Spanish-speaking myRA representatives, the process to open an account was easy.

Since opening an account, Mariela has been saving a small amount from her paycheck each week. She finds comfort in knowing myRA is backed by the U.S. Treasury, that accounts won’t lose money, and that she’s taking steps to save for retirement. “It is important for me because it’s my future,” she says.

To make sure the sign-up process goes smoothly, have your social security number, driver’s license or other ID, and the name and birthdate of at least one beneficiary on hand.

• $5 per pay period: Deposit at least $5 per paycheck into the account. It’s a small amount, but it adds up. You can contribute to your myRA account via direct deposit through your employer or from your personal checking or savings account.

Consider setting up regular contributions; they make saving automatic, so you can set them up and then forget about them.

• 1 step in the right direction: That’s it! You’ve taken the first step toward a better financial future, and your retirement savings account is ready to continue growing. Down the line, you can boost your savings by increasing the amount you save from each paycheck or by making one-time contributions, like from your federal tax refund.

who didn’t interact much with other students. So when he volunteered to audition for a “freestyle” dance demonstration with Young Audiences of Abilene, it surprised Haley Carter, who, at the time, was a teacher artist with Young Audiences, a nonprofit arts program under the auspices of the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council that brings the arts into schools. Justin exhibited a level of confidence and passion during his dancing that astounded the entire class. His amazed classmates cheered him on. After that, the other students approached Justin differently. They began to speak to him more in class and draw him into their activities.

Carter had witnessed the growth of a student in a very personal way. She asked Justin why he had volunteered to audition and what he most liked about the dance class. “In here I can be myself,” he said. “I don’t have to worry about bullies at school, homework, or what’s going on at home. Here I can dance and be myself. I don’t have to worry about anyone making fun of me or laughing at me. I can just be me.”

support your organization’s mission after the event is over? • Taste of Abilene is the main

fundraising event undertaken by the Rotary Club of Abilene, but we are also involved in putting out flags on holidays, helping ring the Christmas bell for the Salvation Army, send high school students to leadership camp RYLA, donate books to elementary schools and help eliminate Polio world-wide.
