Surfaces for saxophone quartet
By David Klock
Instrumentation Soprano saxophone Alto saxophone Tenor saxophone Baritone saxophone
Duration ca. 3’50”
About Texture is of the utmost importance in this piece. For the majority of the piece, articulations are not uniform, though at times two or more players’ articulations will align. The exceptions to this pattern are in measures 3, 30, 40, and 42 – 43, where all players are in unison. This is intended to create a phasing effect with nearly static harmonies. If circular breathing is possible, cue notes should be played without breath. If not, cues may be omitted to allow for breaths.
