Program Notes This piece is composed of sounds recorded around Seattle, Washington. The obvious sounds are of seagulls, water lapping against stones, a buoy being inflated, and pebbles falling on the beach. Under those lie power lines, a ferry starting its engine, footsteps on a sidewalk, power lines, and even a volleyball game. The trumpet establishes two themes using whole tone scales, giving the listener a sense of being unmoored and searching. These themes develop until a crescendo abruptly ends at 4:02”. The trumpet then moves into a call and response echo of the original two themes, this time in pentatonic scales, giving the sense of being anchored and centered within oneself.

Notation

Any and all rhythms in trumpet part may be played rubato. Accidentals do not carry over between phrases, and are written without respect to any key signature. The notation of electronic sounds in the score is not comprehensive, but meant to act as a road map of what the performer will most easily be able to hear while performing. For example, the tone gate is introduced at 1:07”, where four pulses are heard. In later iterations, there will be a different amount of pulses, but the symbol used to represent the sound remains the same as the original. It will be helpful for the performer to start a timer on a music stand next to them immediately after starting the electronics track.
