THE HISTORIC ARTCRAFT THEATRE• CELEBRATING A CENTURY • SEPTEMBER 10, 2022

A CENTURY IN THE MAKING lot has happened since The Historic Artcraft Theatre opened its doors on Nov. 1, 1922. A depression, a world war, moon landings, social and political turmoil, heck, even a pandemic. But the theatre survived it all. It survived because of people. People needing a place to gather; to laugh; to escape. Those people brought friends and family to experience the same joy they wanted to share with others. That infectious feeling is still alive today.

Rob Shilts, Executive Director Franklin Heritage, Inc.

Since Franklin Heritage, Inc. purchased the theatre in 2004, it has been that same element that has kept it going. The people, volunteers, staff, donors, and patrons all make the experience of sharing a movie or event together a memorable and joyful occasion. Today, we celebrate the building and what has happened within these four walls. Even more, we celebrate the people whose dedication over the past 100 years has allowed this theatre to be such an icon for our community and stand the test of time. We raise our glasses and toast everyone that has left their mark over the previous 100 years, and those preserving for the century to follow.

For the silent movie tonight I will re-create a 1922 small-town movie experience. Small town theaters, like the Artcraft, usually had a lone piano player who would come in right before the movie, unrehearsed, and simply play whatever they knew. In order to make the music a more effective part of the movie experience the early Sam Fox Studio hired several composers to create short themes which were labeled “Fire,” “Lovers,” “Hurry!,”“Horses,” etc. Studios recommended that the small town piano player learn some of the relevant themes and then utilize them during the movie. That is what I will be doing tonight - I will be watching the movie along with everyone else and making up the piano part as I go along, improvising based on the 1920s studio suggested styles.
