TURNING A CORNER:
LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD
S
Rob Shilts, Executive Director Franklin Heritage, Inc.
Starting our 2021 with The Historic Artcraft Theatre auditorium dark – again – was not how Franklin Heritage, Inc. imagined the year would begin. We had high hopes that a sense of normalcy was on the horizon. But we did what we, and so many other people have done for the last couple of years – pivot. It’s a buzzword we’re all tired of by this point. We increased our focus on small group, private party events at the theatre, to help keep the lights on. We asked for more donations, and support through membership drives. We continued our curbside concession nights. As you have always done, you answered the call. You filled up the available theatre rentals. You bought more popcorn than we could have imagined. You donated like the theater depended on it (because it did)! And, over time, the storm passed. We dusted off, stood strong, and went back to business. Some of our key highlights from the year are shown through this report, but a couple of standouts aligned with our mission require special callouts: • We partnered with the city, developers, and a home owner to move a historic house from one side of town to the other, resulting in its preservation instead of demolition. • Madison Street Salvage expanded its operation to include another part-time team member • A joint effort with many other community organizations resulted in the renovation of a second historic home.
SCAN TO DONATE You can contribute to our 100th Anniversary campaign. Just scan the code above. You will be taken directly to our donation page.
• We produced the inaugural “Secret Garden Walk,” a self-guided garden tour showcasing some of Franklin’s greenest thumbs. We hope you are excited by the work FHI has done in the community the past year, which has only been possible through your commitment to our mission. We are moving forward into the Artcraft Theatre’s 100th year and can’t wait to show you what the future holds for Franklin Heritage, Inc., The Historic Artcraft Theatre, and Madison Street Salvage.

FUTURE FORWARD:
LOOKING AT THE NEXT 100 YEARS
I
It took some time to return to action, but when we reopened the Artcraft’s doors in April, it was a welcome reminder of how much this old theater is loved. The success of the private watch parties and curbside concessions helped us make it through to the reopening. Once open, more than 24,000 people came through the doors for our movie series. Although working through limited seating and other restrictions, we hosted more than double the number of guests we had in 2020. Along with our regular weekend films, we brought back the Summer Break Series, Midweek Music Movies, Brew and View and Reel Women/Vintage Wine movie nights

to great acclaim. We also packed the house for two live performances by the Glenn Miller Orchestra in December. These events, along with the inaugural Secret Garden Walk in July, point the way forward for the next chapter in this nearly 100 year old-theater’s history.

Additional highlights from 2021 • Cosmetic updates across the theater including a fresh coat of paint in the auditorium and mirrored tile updated and installed in the lobby. • The Save-A-Seat project concludes with the last seat being installed and loveseat style chairs in place. • Launching a monthly partnership with Frequency Spot LLC for more live music events with some rising stars. • Multiple sell-out shows return to the theater for a familiar Christmas season. • Record number of FHI / Artcraft Theatre memberships (peaking at 747).

SEVEN DAY SALVAGE:
EXTENDED HOURS AND A NEW FACE
M
Madison Street Salvage took a big step forward in 2021 by operating seven days a week, compared to four HOURS a week in 2013. We added a part-time team member, continued seeking out and finding quality products, and experienced our best ever sales year. Salvage sales Christine Hamilton joined in 2021 contributed Madison Street Salvage as a part-time team member in more than $60,000 the fall. to Franklin Heritage, Inc. We also stepped out of the shop, as Madison Street Salvage took a strong role in the remodeling of 48 E. Madison St. to welcome the Wild Geese Bookshop to the first floor of the FHI offices. Master

woodworker Dennis Norman also helped customize several display pieces for the bookstore. We appreciate your help in continuing this success through your donation of antiques and architectural salvage items.

MOBILE HOMES & MORE: SAVING HOUSES AND A SECRET WALK
A
After spending most of 2020 focused on stability, Franklin Heritage, Inc. moved full steam ahead in 2021. FHI had the opportunity to save not just one, but two historic houses in alignment with our mission of preserving Franklin’s historic properties. In order to move a turn of the century Victorian house, FHI partnered with the city, Franklin Development Corporation, Bemis Group and several other organizations. The June project moved the home five blocks through town to its new permanent home on Madison Avenue. A second house was rehabbed for stability through a partnership with the Property Recovery Task Force - a committee of the FDC. This project was completed in November, and the house sold quickly in December.

In July, FHI launched the inaugural “Secret Garden Walk.” Gardeners around Franklin opened their backyards to over a thousand attendees. This event is sure to become a regular addition to the rotation of special Franklin Heritage, Inc. events.

IN MEMORIUM
VERNE JOHNSON
MIKE REMBUSCH
Verne was instrumental from the beginning of Franklin Heritage’s operation of the Artcraft Theatre. He loved volunteering in the box office from start, and was often the first smiling face newcomers to the Artcraft saw. Verne was quick with a joke and helped however he could. He is shown above in 2008 with his wife and fellow long-time volunteer Jane.
Mike was the last theatre owner in the Rembusch family movie empire, a family which changed how cinemas operated for the entire industry. He owned the Artcraft until 2000, and operated Canary Creek in Franklin until 2020. Mike was always invested in the success of the Artcraft, even jumping in to help with popcorn as shown above in 2021.
MARTY WILLIAMS
JACK WOOD
Marty volunteered with Franklin Heritage, Inc. for as long as we can remember - including a term as board president. Marty was like family to so many. He was our first volunteer at Madison Street Salvage and was a regular at the shop for nearly eight years. Marty was as kind as a man could possibly be, a jokester, and a friend to everyone.
Jack Wood was the guardian angel of Franklin. He always shared the joy he had in his soul with everyone. Jack’s role as The Apple Tree for our traditional showings of “The Wizard of Oz” was the one he enjoyed most. Jack wouldn’t bat an eye to be a race car driver, police man, or a nun - anything to help out. You da boss, Jack.

Frequency Spot Presents sets up for an October event.
WHAT’S NEXT? Celebrate a century
We’ve got a lot planned for our 100th anniversary celebration and fundraiser, block party style! We’ll release more info this summer – save the date for September 10, 2022
Next building up! VIsitors to the Secret Garden Walk are impressed by what hides behind the hedge row.
We helped save two buildings in 2021, so why stop there? Our missions is preserving historic properties and we want to keep the momentum going.
Seats in the seats
We want everyone back at the Artcraft. We have a great movie slate set for 2022, and the seats are like new. Come see a classic film, enjoy that delicious popcorn and share the joy of a movie on the big screen with others!
Pay down our debts
Volunteer Scott Keehn preps barn wood for sale at Madison Street Salvage. A new popcorn machine is unloaded after volunteers Mike Hill and Shawn Kummer made a trek to Wisconsin to find a twin machine to our existing popper.
We’ve said it for years now, but we would love to pay off the mortgages for the theater and the salvage building sooner rather than later. Eliminating the remaining balances will open up funds for many other opportunities.
More live events. More movies. More activities for the community. We want to see activity every night. It’s our goal to be the central hub for downtown entertainment.
