Onthe10thFebruary1680,sixdaysbeforehisdeath,theReverend RalphDavenantdrewupaWillwherebyhegave,"amongstother things,allhishouseholdgoodsandPlatetohiswifeMary,duringherlife andmarriage.ThenhegavethesametoJohnWard,JohnSandfordand JoshuaSabintobebythemsold,andmoneyraised,therebytobuilda schoolinWhitechapel,andalsogavethem£100toput20poorboysof Whitechapelapprentice...“
Intheyear1686,referenceismadeinapetitiontothethenBishopof Londonbythechurchwardens,overseersandotherinhabitants,ofthe Parish,"settingforththatRalphDavenant,deceased,lateRectorofthe Parish,forthezealandlovehehadforhisParish,andfortheeducating andbringingupofpoorchildrenintheprinciplesofReligion,andtoread andwrite,andtocastaccounts,hadwithothersmadeadeedof settlementforcertainyearlyrents,forthemaintenanceofaMasterand Mistress,andfortheerectingoftwofreeschoolsinsomeconvenient placeoftheParish;whichhe(MrDavenant)intendedtohaveerected andbuilt,hadnotdeathpreventedhim;andforthischaritableworkhe hadappointedTrusteesforcarryingiton.....“
"Thereforethepetitioners,byconsentoftheRectorandtherestofthe Parishioners,requestedtheBishoptograntleave,licenceandauthority, toerectthesaidSchool,andSchoolHouses,uponpartofthelower burialground.“
WiththispetitiontheBishopcomplied,andbyhislicencedated29th March1686,carrieditintoeffect-andsofulfilledtheexpressedwishes ofRalphDavenantofsixyearsbefore
