Welcome to our third sale. The AuctionsPlus format provides greater flexibility for buyers. We want to sell our cattle at fair and reasonable prices to all South Devon enthusiasts both stud and commercial, simply and easily. Look through the catalogue as there are great prospects for both stud and commercial breeders. We have decided to change the sale to February. This will allow us to use the SA Beef Field Days as an inspection day, bulls to grow and develop, transport options and a better time of year. We have move to a Bovine Johnes Disease MN2 herd. After recent changes to the MAP, a MN2 herd still allows us to sell into every state or territory. We had to drop a level to enable us to buy in outcross genetics. Over the years we have built a strong client base throughout Australia and overseas. We pride ourselves on the “beef cattle” we breed and the ability of these to adapt into many breeding operations. Please read our “Objectives” to understand the beef animal we are breeding. We continue to use all “tools” to provide animals the beef industry demands. Buyers demand reliable information, no longer can we sell on looks or in-house data, there can be a big difference in fleshing and muscle! At Davelle we pride ourselves in gathering all available data. We work very hard and put many hours of research into meeting and/or exceeding our Objectives. If you’re serious about beef production and profit, then Davelle is your solution! The SA Beef Field Days will be your opportunity to inspect the sale animals. We’ll open up the herd as much as possible so you can appreciate our herd. There will be Beef Burgers and refreshments available. We thank existing clients for your valued support and look forward to meeting new ones.
“The Opportunity” We have been supplying South Devon’s, both steers and females to Richard Gunner Fine Meats (RGFM). The demand for South Devon beef is growing, as chefs and the public appreciate their superior eating qualities. This leads us to “The Opportunity” in South Devon. Demand is growing and we need more producers of South Devon’s. RGFM will buy the offspring from the sale (meeting RGFM specifications). Into the future RGFM will buy pure bred South Devon’s (meeting RGFM specifications). Consideration may be given to South Devon x British breeds (meeting RGFM specifications). There are 2 options – 1. Finished – RGFM likes them to be 18 months and older, in very good condition, there is no penalty for over fat. Steers and empty females. Delivery to Prime Valley Pastoral abattoirs, Two Wells or Richards abattoirs, Bordertown. 2. Supply to their feedlot – RGFM has a feedlot available that can accept animals to put on feed. RGFM likes them backgrounded to about 450kgs. If you have interest in supplying RGFM and want more details, please contact David Leese or Richard Gunner (0408864420).

Our Objectives – Our first and foremost objective is to grow grass. To utilise this feed we need good efficient converters, we have found this within the South Devon - they are very efficient beef cattle. The beef cattle we breed for will be – An easy doing, good tempered, fertile animal that shows a lot of capacity – both in the meat it houses and throughout the body, length, medium frame and the willingness to perform under differing conditions – South Devon’s advantage. Females are the backbone of the herd – they need to have a live calf every year, grow that calf quickly so it yields well and is efficient, adding profitability. We believe if you breed for the perfect female, males follow. We submit data to South Devon BreedPlan, to find these curve bending animals with strong carcass traits. We believe in performance recoding as a tool available. We use all tools to help find animals that meet beef breeders objectives – visual, weights, scan, feel, pedigree. Davelle Balanced Breeding targets for fertility, 400 day growth rates, Strong Carcass Traits and Polling. Fertility drives everything!! Put this together with the attributes of the South Devon and sound type, Davelle has a package that is meeting the objectives of the beef industry. We will always select animals on functional type and eye appeal first. Then we look to EBV’s. The EBV pattern we are striving looks like this – Birth Weight 200 Day Weight 400 Day Weight 600 Day Weight Mature Cow Milk Carcass Traits
under +1.0 – striving for curve bending animals. None are kept over 45kgs BW. around +10-20 around +20-30 around +20-30 – flattening out growth so breeding females don’t get to big around +20-30 under +10 – we need to be careful if the season dries up. all traits to be strongly positive
We want females to peak their growth at around 3 years old. We want animals to put on as much weight as possible with desired carcass traits and then without breeding cows getting too big – efficiency. In general we’ll be targeting the South Devon “Supermarket Index” with emphasis on carcass traits over growth. Recently we have pursued Black South Devon’s importing semen from USA. We feel they offer a tremendous opportunity to the beef producer. The Black South Devon is an alternate Polled Black British breed. As a crossbreeding option, they will be ideal as an alternate Black sire for hybrid vigor, F1 females are maternal machines. Don’t discount the enormous opportunity the Black South Devon presents.
Davelle 2015 Normally we send out a Newsletter in January each year, with our sale changing, having a summary of the year in a catalogue gives everyone a chance to see what we’ve been up to. Field Days 10th Feb 2016 Our Field Days have changed to Wednesday 10th Feb 2016, please find the time to visit. All sale animals will be available for inspection and everything else we can get in and close to the yards. Homemade “Davelle South Devon Beef Burgers” will be on the menu together with refreshments. Last year’s Field Days were a great success, with many new faces visiting. The burgers were a hit!! Weather – It was a long dry spell since the last substantial rains at the end of July 2014. January we saw a rain event that knocked our minimal dry feed out and with a cold week following saw a germination. I haven’t seen milking cows loose condition so fast as they chased the green. We decided to wean the late winter/early spring calves to give the cows a break. Some of these calves where quite small and took a while to catch up. Apart from that January rain it was a long dry summer. A good break mid April gave an opportunity to plant our feed crops and with good follow up rains feed was away, within 6-8 weeks we had good feed available. Winter was quite cold, with a good snow fall mid July. Although spring was cut short, again, it was a very good pasture feed year with excellent cover and now standing dry feed. A note on our location – on average our cattle only see 5-6 months of good strong green feed. Our cattle take that little extra time to grow. However when placed into more favourable conditions, they perform accordingly! Calves – Autumn saw 27 calves, with calves from AI Sires – Davelle Win Austin Z26 (heifers only). Natural sires – Davelle UB Righton H26 and Lincoln Toryson 39A. Spring saw 54 calves, with calves from AI Sires – BC Progress 315U, Ace F1, Kildare F11, Torr Downs Marvel 3 and Torr Downs Hermes 3. Natural sires – Ace F11 and Davelle Barossa J5 (sold in last years sale). Shows This year Davelle competed in 3 states – Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. It was a huge logistical effort for us to get 3 animals to Beef 2015 at Rockhampton, although the bulls weren’t in perfect show condition, we were there. The highlight being our heifer, Davelle D8 Debra K76 was Grand Champion Female. This gave the opportunity to be in the “cauldron” for the Champion of Champions. What a thrill, it was like a footy game with supporters calling out for their breeds!! What a great experience, loved every moment and the people met. Beef 2018?? We sold all animals - bulls went to repeat buyers from Rolleston and heifer to the Peter’s Family, who took her to Gympie and was Reserve Interbreed Junior Female. A big thank you to my mate Matt Bekker and his family and also to my family for making this happen. We entered 3 steers in the Royal Adelaide Led Steer competition. We were mid field this year for both hook and hoof, they weren’t just there, eventually the cold winter took its toll. EMA’s were excellent for all, but the fats were just off – only millimetres in it, but that’s all it takes!!
We took a steer to Melbourne, this was our first time at Melbourne. I was impressed with the event. On hoof our steer was 5th in Class and in the top third on hook. He had an EMA of 116cm2, but again short on fats. Thank you to Paul and Lewis Bruggemann for helping make this work, see what happens next year? Country Show highlights – Davelle UB Righton H26 performed strongly in the spring shows, Grand Champion Male at Melrose and Senior Champion Male Jamestown. All others won class ribbons, but were over powered in the Championships. Our country shows are increasing in numbers, this year about 60 of all breeds were at all 3 shows. Sales – We’re looking forward to the change of dates for our sale. Many have expressed November wasn’t a good time of year. Look through our catalogue, there are some stud bull prospects and some very sound herd bulls. We’ve selected a strong line up of females, the older cows have stood the test of time whilst the younger cows have had a heifer calf that is to be retained, we’ve got similar breeding or are just surplus to requirements – just can’t keep them all!! We still have good amounts of MJB United 333U and Burtergill Harry 815 semen for sale for those looking for outcross genetics. We have collected Davelle UB Righton H26. We’ve exported to the Van Asch Family from New Zealand who has sole rights there. We have collected further amounts for export to USA, Canada and South Africa. There are good amounts available for local sale. We feel Righton is a tremendous example of where we want to take our cattle – low birth weight, good growth and excellent carcass, in an attractive eye appealing package. A recent scan of 159cm2 eye muscle with fats of 13/7 and 5.1% IMF made us stand back and admire him – he’s a pretty good bull!! We’re getting some great calves. Purchases – We found ourselves short of a bull in May and had to find a solution quickly that offered outcross genetics. We found The Bend Joyride. I had interest in him previously, but Daley’s had decided to use him themselves. I saw he was available again, so we made the bold decision to take him. He breaks our rule in that he has very limited performance data to him, but to his defence has a very strong pedigree with some breed influential parentage, something we strive for. He’s very moderate and an eye pleasing sire, we have photos on our website. We’ll see calves from March 2016. After my visit to Queensland, I have to admit I fell in love with the Droughtmasters. I had an opportunity to a private visit to Glenlands a prominent stud when at Beef, then a tour of Bos Park. My mind got going on how they’d do in the Mid North of SA? We’ve purchased 7 females from prominent well performing studs, 3 are already at Davelle, with the remainder arriving through 2016. Our aim is to target northern beef producers with the option of a pure Droughtmaster or a Droughtmaster x South Devon to provide a hardy easy doing beef animal that will compliment a cross breeding operation. I believe this should give greater exposure to our South Devons. It’s already created interest!! Davelle South Devon Experience The 2015 recipient was Morgan McCallum from Booleroo Centre SA. Morgan took a steer and competed very well and had a great time. Morgan won an award to buy a heifer of her choice, hoping she visits soon? It’s with regret to inform we have stopped the award.
Performance Recording – Again we have seen good improvement in the EBV traits we strive for – low birth weights, good growth and excellent carcass. In the November 2015 analysis our Herd Average was Gest. Birth Len. Wt. (days (kg)

We have stated our objectives and work hard to achieve these to give buyers of our cattle confidence in our capabilities. In summary we target the Supermarket Index with emphasis on carcass traits over growth. Sound type is always paramount. Supplying the EBV’s to meet the beef industry’s needs, allows our package to be competitive with any breed. We believe in supplying as much information to buyers to help make an informed decision to add profitability to their operations. Increasingly data and information is demanded. If you’re buying bulls without a suite of data (pedigree/registration certificate, weights and scans and an analysis (BreedPlan)), do you understand your risk? It is easy to say he’s a good bull, but is he? There’s much you can’t see? 2016 – • •

Why South Devon? Extracts from Lee Leachman, Leachman Cattle of Colorado, USA (changed for Australia) In a beef industry increasingly dominated by Angus cattle, this question could be asked of any of the other breeds. Simply put why are we relevant? How can we complete? Why would commercial breeders take a chance on any breed outside the mainstream? Is there a future for seedstock breeders? These are tough questions, but ones that all of us have asked and ones that all of us need to answer. The key questions become, “Can South Devon Increase Breeders Profitability?” To this question, my answer is a resounding, “YES!” In today’s industry, profitability is driven by several factors. At the cow/calf level fertility, cow feed intake, weaning weight production and calf market value are the drivers. In the feedlot, feed conversion, gain, carcass weight, and carcass merit are the drivers. In each of these areas, a strong case can be made for the advantages of a planned crossbreeding program that incorporates South Devon. Create Hybrid Vigor: Hybrid vigor is a key driver of profitability. Hybrid vigor increases fertility, cow longevity, calf survival and calf weight. When summed, these factors increase kilograms per weaned cow exposed by up to 23%. Breeders should crossbreed, but they need to crossbreed with a breed that works and does not sacrifice the value of the calves produced. The Best British Cross: The challenge to crossbreeding, is finding the right breed to cross. Most breeders fondly recall the black baldy cows that they had in the 70’s. This leads them to first consider Hereford. While Hereford x Angus females are great, the resulting F1 feeder calves leave much to be desired, the Hereford x Angus steer lacks desired levels of marbling, has insufficient muscularity and does not reach adequate carcass weights before getting too fat. The South Devon breed keeps marbling, adds to muscularity and increases carcass weight. For this reason, South Devon is the best British breed crossbreeding option – Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Murray Grey and bos indicus based cattle will see great benefit when using South Devon, the F1 females will be great future breeders with tremendous maternal traits. More Feed Efficient: Beyond hybrid vigor, the biggest opportunity for improving profitability is by reducing the feed required to produce a kilogram of beef. This starts with the cow and how much she eats. Then, the feed conversion on the steers is important. Through aggressive selection for performance, some breeds have directly selected for increased appetite. High growth, for the most part, are also high feed intake animals. In contrast, the South Devon breed has shown itself to be lower on feed intake and more efficient on gain. Both results from the Midlands Bull Station and results from Leachman Cattle have shown that the average South Devon ranks very high on feed efficiency. In fact, South Devon might be the most efficient beef breed. Higher Profitability: In the pork and poultry industries, seedstock companies use multi-trait selection indexes to improve profitability. These indexes balance the effect each trait has on income and expenses. The index allows breeders to identify the genetics that most rapidly improve profitability. Leachman Cattle are applying the same technology to their beef cattle selection. They have 3 indexes that select for profitability: $Ranch: profit for a cow/calf producer who sells calves at weaning $Feeder: Profit for the feeder that buys your calves $Profit: profit from birth through harvest (In Australia, South Devons have developed the Weaner, Supermarket and Export indexes, each targeting a desired end market)
Using these indexes, you are able to select for improved net profit. Higher value animals offer more hybrid vigor, higher fertility, more growth, higher carcass merit and reduced feed intake. Leachman’s have measured large numbers of bulls in many breeds, it is interesting that on average South Devon ranks higher than every other breed except for Angus on our $Profit index. Conclusions: The global beef market is in exciting times with increased demand driven by growing population and growing income levels. Growing demand for beef will create historically large profits for cow/calf producers. The smart commercial ranchers will seek genetics that improve profitability of their herd. The South Devon breed is ideally positioned to establish itself as a key player in profitable beef production. Today, it is more important than ever for South Devon breeders to measure and identify their best genetics. This includes measuring cow size, carcass merit and feed efficiency. Good breeders in every breed are improving their cattle. The bar is rising. To compete, the South Devon breed needs to make maximum genetic change on profitability. By using a profit index, like $Profit, the South Devon breeders can ensure the future of the breed.
Why South Devon? Because South Devon crosses make more money!

SOUTH DEVON BREEDPLAN - Understanding the EBVs, Selection Indices and Accuracy EBV’s EBV’s are a tool that will help you make more educated decisions when you are choosing breeding stock. The best way to make use of this information is to first decide your breeding goals and secondly to select animals with EBV’s that match those criteria. Only South Devon Group BreedPlan EBV’s can be validly compared between herds. Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on AI and hand mating records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth. Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight. 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV. Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter's milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability. Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal's genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny. Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days. Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Animals with relatively higher EMA EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will animals with lower EMA EBVs. Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13-rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Animals with relatively lower fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will animals with higher EBVs. Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Animals with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases. Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
Selection Indices South Devon selection indices are calculated for three market specifications, namely Vealer, Supermarket and Export Maternal. These Indices relate to typical South Devon herds in temperate Australia targeting these specifications. Vealer Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting vealer production. Vealers are finished on grass and are marketed at 320 kg live weight (180 kg HSCW and 4 mm P8 fat depth) at 10 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding. No marbling is required. Supermarket Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting the domestic supermarket trade. Steers are either finished on grass or grain (eg 70 days). Steers are marketed at 450 kg live weight (250 kg HSCW and 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 15 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding. In response to industry feedback regarding eating quality and tenderness, a small premium has been placed on marbling. Export Maternal Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting steers for the export market being finished off grass or through a mid-fed feeding program (eg 125 days). Steers are assumed marketed at 600 kg live weight (330 kg HSCW and 20 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding. In response to industry feedback regarding eating quality and tenderness, a small premium has been placed on marbling.
Some Quotes “South Devon cattle are the most tender beef breed as tested by the US Meat Animal Research Centre in Clay Centre, Nebraska, and many of our beef customers! South Devon is an English breed that marbles like many Angus and Red Angus, yet yield like a 1/2 blood Continental. Recently, they had the largest average rib eye area of all the breeds at Midland 4 years running.” They have no known genetic defects, great temperament and arguably the most pure bred of all breeds”. MJB Cattle USA “South Devon cattle are an English breed whose traits compliment both English and Continental cattle breeds. South Devon cattle are well-known for their maternal longevity and docility. Profit driven cow/calf operations that wanted to add high levels of heterosis, fertility, low feed intake, and high weaning weights found that South Devons delivered as promised. In the feedlot, heterosis, lower feed intake, and superior carcass merit, especially marbling and tenderness, are compliments of the South Devon breed.” Dave Nichols USA “The South Devon breed has emerged as the dominant British breed alternative to Angus. South Devon breed is more than competitive on $Profit. Much of this is based on their unique combination of heavy muscling with marbling levels comparable to Angus. In addition, substantial evidence now suggests that the breed excels on feed efficiency”. Lee Leachman USA.

Comments – A growthy black South Devon bull. The only black bull in this offering. Our “P” family line produce good honest cattle. We’ve found any amount of BC Progress 315U in a pedigree adds that extra punch. High growth and IMF in the top 5%. Supermarket and Export Indexes in the top 15%. Ideally used over females to add extra frame and growth in a cross breeding operation needing, wanting to keep the hide black. We’ve had a large run of black bull in 2015. Comments – Current herd sire. Righton is the complete package both in type and performance – a rare combination. Dam is the great Lincoln Rose 14. Sire Paltarra Ubquiet, a very impressive animal. Righton is ultra smooth, long with plenty of strength of spine, width, fleshing and muscle. He has great style and presence with a lovely sirey head and moves around on a great set of feet and legs. Righton is a modern bred bull targeting that “curve bending” profile and strong carcass traits. Recently scanned an EMA of 159cm2. Price $44. Packages of 20+ $33 and 50+ $27.50 inc gst/straw ex Murray Bridge. Photo on our website.
