TheMARC(MeatAnimalResearchCentre)startedaprojectin1973calledtheGermPlasmUtilization(GPU) project.Theirresearchshowedseveraladvantagesthatcomefromcrossbreeding.Mostimportantlythey showedthathybridvigourhasalargeimpactonbeefcattleproductivity.Theresearchdemonstratedan8% improvementinweaningweightwhenapurebredcowismatedtoabullofadifferentbreed.Theresearchalso showedthatcrossbredcowsarefarmoreproductivethanpurebredcows.Thebenefitscameinmultipleareas includingmoremilkproduction,betterbodycondition,fasterre-breeding,andalongerproductivelifetime. Historically,crossbreedingrequirestheuseofcomplicatedmatingsystemstokeepthehybridvigoureffect. Scientistsdesignedrotationalsystemsusingthreebreeds.However,suchsystemsweretoocomplicated. Furthermore,theyresultedinwideswingsinbreedcomposition,andpreventedbreedersfromhavinga uniform,welladaptedherd.Asanalternative,theresearchersatMARCdevelopedmulti-breedcomposites. Theirstudyconfirmedthatsuchcompositebreedsretainhybridvigourinproportiontothenumberofbreeds used-usingmorebreedsgeneratesmoreretentionofhybridvigour.TheStabilizer(MarcIIcomposite),with fourbreeds,retains75%oftheF1hybridvigour.Thus,breederscanbreedcompositebullstocomposite femalesandkeepmostoftheavailablehybridvigourwithoutthecomplexityandlossofuniformityassociated withcrossbreeding.
