As Managing Director and Chief Engineer of TREAD Ltd, Ray Collier (below) is no stranger to the track when it comes to testing Davanti products to their limits, and what better way to demonstrate the capabilities of Protoura Race than on the circuit?

Here’s what he had to say about its performance and how Protoura Race has proven itself on the track:

At Applus+ IDIADA, Protoura Race went head to head against its peers as we tested its ability to perform both on road and on track through a series of wet and dry tests. At the Calafat Circuit in Spain, the focus was durability for abrasion and heat resistance using a full race car.

TREAD is an independent testing organisation which has collaborated with the world’s most premium vehicle and tyre manufacturers. For more than 20 years, the group has provided automotive manufacturers with

invaluable feedback for achieving top-level performance. Since 2017, TREAD has been commissioned

by Davanti to manage its product testing schemes and prototype development. These processes are visible through the honing of the new Protoura Race; a design which offers power, performance and control.

PROTOURA RACE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AND TESTED AT SOME OF EUROPE’S TOUGHEST PROVING GROUNDS AND RACE CIRCUITS.

APPLUS+ IDIADA

Spain

Boasting some of the best summer testing facilities in the world, Applus+ IDIADA put Protoura Race through its paces in a series of wet and dry handling and braking tests to ensure the tyres performed at the top of their class.

The tests were carried out using a Golf GTI TCR race car - for on track testing - and a series of fast road cars including the latest model Golf GTI, to determine on road performance.

Key to the success of Protoura Race was its handling performance, in which Davanti assessed the tyre’s pace around the track. Both the race car and the road car were used to tune Protoura Race’s breakaway characteristic, ensuring good feedback

to the driver and progressive handling up to and beyond the limit. When benchmarked against leading competitors, Protoura Race held its own, giving a professional, quality performance with the exceptional control expected from a premium tyre.

Its braking capabilities came out on top with ‘A’ grade status, and grip levels were excellent in both wet and dry conditions, ensuring drivers can maintain ultimate control when travelling at high speeds.

CALAFAT CIRCUIT

A versatile testing facility steeped in history, the Calafat Circuit offers three different tracks, making it the ideal location for durability testing.

assess its consistency and performance levels through varying heat ranges. The tyre was heated and cooled repeatedly over several sessions to determine its suitability for racing and transitioning from the road to the track and back to the road, showing excellent durability. Protoura Race proved to be consistent with a high level of performance throughout the heat ranges, with good driver feedback and maintained integrity for continued use on public highways.

SILVERSTONE

United Kingdom

In order to test not only against reference tyres but against other competitors too, the Protoura Race was used in a Track Testing Session on the Silverstone GP circuit. Using the professional TSL timing and qualification standings, it was possible to benchmark the advantage of using Protoura Race against similar cars and through other drivers giving further validation to the results and test process.

The session also provided further insight into the tyre’s performance in varying race conditionsfrom a damp circuit to a dry line. Protoura Race once again proved its capabilities under these conditions, allowing it to be pushed to the edge. The challenging high speed corners of the iconic GP track showed how the Protura Race worked well with aerodynamic aids on full race cars as well as the loading conditions found during normal highway use.
