Places gained at The Prep class gained places at the following schools: Aldenham, Belmont, Channing, City of London, Boys, Francis Holland, Haberdashers’ Boys,Highgate, Immanuel, Mount House, Merchant Taylor’s Queen’s College, Queenswood, St Albans Boys, St Albans High, St Helen’s, St Margaret’s Bushey, University College and Westminster.

Seven Plus Places were gained at City of London Junior, Edge Grove, Haberdashers’ Boys, Haberdashers’ Girls, Heath Mount and St Margaret’s Bushey.

Retrospective Editorial We spoke about not giving in when faced with a challenge. Well, a couple who have not stopped trying are Jack and Jill. For many, many years they have been going up the hill to fetch some water. Jack fell down and Jill came tumbling after………but they are still trying.

Did you know that a Jack, and a Gill (Pronounced Jill and sometimes spelt that way) are measures of ale? King Charles 1 in 1652 attempted to raise the Taxes on liquid measures to boost his wealth. Parliament voted against it. So the King reduced the volume of the Jack, and kept the Tax the same. The volume mark on the standard Jack measure was marked with a crown (The position of the crown was lowered accordingly). Thus “Jack fell down”. The mark on the Gill was also lowered…. ”Jill came tumbling after”. It was general practice for the Innkeepers to water down the ale.

Hence, “Fetch a pail of water”.

Editorial Everybody has hills to climb. Whatever age or walk of life one is, there will always be challenges. Sometimes they are predictable, whist on occasion you meet them quite unexpectedly. Likewise there will be the easy passages where difficult terrain is a thing of the past.

Where ever your journey takes you, one has to be prepared for the surprises, varying from difficult to mild.

You may be on part of the journey where you travel alone. There is no immediate help to assist you up an extremely difficult steep incline, or a helping hand to prevent you going too fast through what seemed like an easy descent, but it is so steep there is fear of you losing control, and tumbling into the ravine below.

Whilst you are young there is always your family there to help and guide. Also School will be able to offer advice and assistance. As you get older you will be able to plan your journey and think ahead of some of the difficulties that may confront you. Perhaps a change of route will be thought about as an alternative.

The main thing is not to give up. There is nothing more rewarding than working hard to overcome a difficulty. If the terrain is rough the journey may take a little longer, but the feeling of satisfaction and self-pride at having battled through and come out the other side, is well worth all the effort made.

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Have the self-satisfaction of having met the challenge and come successfully through a difficult time.

If you are thinking I can’t do that you probably won’t.

Give it a try.

School News After many telephone calls and a change of operator, we have managed to have the Phone Box lifted over the fence, placed carefully onto a low loader and taken to be sand blasted and repainted. We hope it will be back soon.

As it was being lifted over the fence, two past parents walking their dogs saw what was happening and said, “You can’t take that away as it is an icon of the school.” Explained it was going to be a library and they remembered the plan.

Staff News We welcome new members of Staff.

Two part-time Midday Supervisors, Mrs Debbie Collins and Mrs Hira Khawaja.

Also Mr Richard Heraty who is Caretaker/ Maintenance and Midday Helper.

There are a number of staff leavers this academic year: Mrs Susanne Simma, our Recorder Teacher, is to be congratulated on the arrival of a daughter Adele. She has recently moved to Bedfordshire and will not be returning in September, as the journey has proved too difficult. Thank you for your short stay with us and best wishes to you and your family.

Mrs Kate Gallagher (Née Hobbs) has been with us since September 2009. She has been much loved and respected by the children. Always there when needed and one to be able to calm a troubled child. She abides in deepest Essex and has decided she needs to be nearer the children at home. We will all miss you and thank you for everything you have done for Goodwyn.

All best wishes for the future.

At one time, Harry her dog was in school and it was very plain to see by his reaction to her, that he loved her company and listened intently to her every word. It is also true to say the children, although they didn’t always verbalise it, showed the same respect and love of her company.

We offer thanks for your unstinted service and wish you all the best for the future.

Miss Jessica Bennett has moved to pastures new having gained her full teaching qualification. Her LAMDA classes were very popular and we will miss her in and around the school. Best wishes and thank you.

You have been the pupil and a member of staff….just the parent left!!!

Mrs Glynis Hobden, who has been at Goodwyn since 1991, is our longest serving leaver. As you heard on Speech Day, she worked for the School Accountants and was familiar with the set-up of the School. In 1991 she was persuaded to join the staff as Bursar.

During her tenure, she has been a great deal more than just a Bursar. She has been deeply involved in the life of Goodwyn.

Glynis Hobden

So many of the ideas she introduced have become a part of Goodwyn that we all enjoy. She was someone all could turn to, with their ideas, worries, or just for a chat. The children have missed her whilst she had an operation on her back. If they see her in the street, it is plain to see by their reaction, how much they liked and respected her. Past parents are all asking after her when we meet them in and around Mill Hill.

She has the Spirit of Goodwyn and set a wonderful example for the Goodwyn family.

Mental Health Week A most busy time with so much covered in the classrooms. All with the same focus, but at different levels.

For example making a connection between exercise and wellbeing in PE lessons, Meditation, and Yoga classes for KSII. Using singing and music for wellbeing.

The Friends of Goodwyn has previously raised funds to purchase Wellbeing Boxes for each class, which contained emotional activities, fidget toys and books on wellbeing. Much appreciated by each class.

An Assembly by Maya, Reece and Seb on the theme of “Lets Connect” continued the theme from the children’s point of view. Some of the other approaches: A sound walk, thinking of a gift that would make somebody smile, or do a drawing that would do the same, make compliment slips with some kind comments on that could be given to people. Making a friendship bracelet. Make a list of all the things we are grateful for. Listen to relaxing sounds like water in a stream or a wave on the beach. Laying on the ground to look up at the clouds (perhaps naming some of them), or telling each other jokes just to have a happy laugh. So many things came out to cause fun, give one thoughts and think not only about others but also oneself so that wellbeing of all was drawn to the fore.

World Mental Health Day The children were asked to wear something green or something different, to mark World Mental Health Day. The day started with a special Assembly by the School Counsellor, to tell the children about the meaning of the day. They were also encouraged to bring in a small donation which will be put towards something which will help Wellbeing. Thank you for your generous contributions.

E-Safety It seems the importance of being safe online is becoming harder to monitor, as the technology moves forward. Sharon Girling OBE reminds us of the dangers and problems that can so easily happen. She keeps up to date with all the new programmes and has very good knowledge as to how to remain safe. We are grateful to her for talking to the children about the issues that can arise.

School Council

Rapunzel on Ice

Classes in Key Stage 2 elected their own class representatives based on talks they prepared, explaining what they would do if they were successful in achieving the role.

Thus a new committee came together of Jessica Posner, Leo Axelrod- Harash, Angel Di’Giralomo, Jodie Stein, Matthew Angel and Alexander Nash, with Mishal Ali as the Chairperson and Form Captain.

Tuesday was an extremely unusual day for me. My class ate lunch much earlier than normal, the reason for this was so that the whole school could begin our journey to Alexandra Palace to watch Rapunzel, but it came with a twist...

Discussions were lively, many ideas came from their class ideas boxes and this committee has made a big difference, including Taco Tuesdays and a new version of Brunch on the Menu based on a children’s survey of best lunches and a meeting with our catering team, as well as many thoughts on how to improve our library space and for our exciting new phone box library.

When we arrived we couldn’t believe our eyes, there was an ice rink, and the actors were wearing ice skates. Was this Rapunzel on Ice? What a fantastic idea, and how fitting for December.

I was impressed by the fact that the writers had made it their own story. My favourite character was Bin, otherwise known as Henry. He was a sly thief, betraying his old friends, however, in the end his personality changed, and he became an honourable man. In my opinion Henry showed his honesty by bringing Rapunzel, the lost Princess, home.

Friends Of Goodwyn Mention must be made of this group of parents who are helping the School, not just by fundraising, but also with the organisation of second hand uniform. Which can now be ordered on line.

They come up with ideas for marketing, Goodwyn merchandise and of course arrange events like Fayres etc... to raise funds to purchase some of the above and beyond things for use in the school. All this is of great benefit to the Goodwyn Community. A lot of thought and hard work. Your efforts are very much appreciated by all. Thank you.

I was most intrigued by the part where Bin’s friends were trying to distract the Queen so that Bin could snatch the crown, eventually after a few tries he succeeded. Obviously, this was when he was sly Bin, and not honourable Henry.

Thank you very much for taking us, what a wonderful experience.

Eco Committee The members of the Eco Committee are: Lola Baddick (LowerPrep), Ruby Konviser (Lower Remove), Chloe Marks (Lower Remove), Archie Ostryn (Remove), Rhia Patel (Lower Prep), Sienna Ricklow (Lower Prep), Amari Selvamanoharan (Remove), Leo Silver (Lower Remove), Rafael Somaiya (Lower Remove), Rocco Spano (Remove) A busy year supporting the school environment. Encouraging all to recycle waste. Paper, plastic, metal and food. So as little as possible goes into the rubbish bin. The year started with all having the opportunity to sort out old unwanted clothes. Bags2School collect the items and some is recycled whilst other is reused.

They weighed the collection and for our 430kg of clothing, were given £440, which went towards Children’s Mental Health.

Chicken Shed The Early Years children loved their trip to the Chicken Shed Theatre to see a wonderful performance called Christmas Tales.

This was a fantastic interactive show with lots of singing and dancing which the children could join in with. It was a fabulous morning out and the cast were very talented.

At the Winter Fayre, a stall was set up selling brown paper. The idea being to encourage folk to use a paper which is easy to recycle. In order to make it attractive, one could crayon on a pattern/ picture. After all, how many of us save the paper? Once torn off, it is in the bin. The plain brown paper recycles well.

The Eco Committee also grew some vegetables, which when ready, were packed in small parcels and given away.

Britannica Quiz Well done to Matthew Angel, Jacob Feldman, Luca Quintarelli and Jesse Sheridan for their expertise in the National Quiz in London. A third place was wonderful. No doubt we will see them in nine or ten years’ time on TV in University Challenge.

Queenswood Poetry On Wednesday 21st June I went to Queenswood School as my poem ‘Exploring the World’ was chosen as one of the prize winners, along with Rocco, Mila and Dylan from Remove.

A lady guided us to the library where the event was being held and we found ourselves with a number of other children from quite a few different schools. Immediately we met the poet Pango Mango who was there to give us a workshop on poetry. Myself and the others sat together with him and he shared quite a few poems he had written. He was very funny, animated and charismatic. I was picked to play a waitress from one of his poems and I really enjoyed it.

After a short break of biscuits and juice we finally were able to read our poems out loud to everyone. I felt a little nervous, but amazing afterwards for doing it. No one from Goodwyn won the overall competition, but we were all lucky enough to receive a certificate and a Michael Rosen book called ‘Unexpected Twist.’

Transition Dog Agility Training In the Autumn term, Transition learnt about Animals including Humans. Parts of this topic incorporated learning about being healthy, exercising and how to look after animals.

In line with this, the children were treated to an hour in the playground, with a gorgeous Irish Terrier Teddy and his owner Brenda, who is a Dog Agility Trainer.

Teddy was a big hit!! He showed the children how dogs can keep fit and stay healthy. This included a range of dog agility exercises and the children even did some themselves!! They also had the opportunity to call Teddy to them and reward him with a treat!

Gold Star Tea Parties The winners of the Gold Star are treated to a tea party, but don’t have any tea. Just juice. However, they do have a table full of nice food. (Allergies allowing.) Much enjoyed by all.

Extracurricular Clubs The children have enjoyed an ever evolving variety of clubs after school this year including Ballet, Busy Hands, Chess, Cookery, Netball, Outdoor Teambuilding and Woodwork. As the programme changes termly, the children have had opportunities to try their hand at many new skills and develop new interests and talents.

International Primary Maths Challenge Prep and Lower Prep pupils at our school eagerly participated in the International Primary Maths Challenge organised by The Mathematical Association.

This thrilling and enjoyable Maths challenge not only sparked their enthusiasm for the subject, but also bolstered their confidence in mathematical concepts. By encountering diverse question formats, the children learned to approach problems from various angles, fostering their ability to think critically and develop strong reasoning skills. Two of our exceptional young mathematicians, Hayden Lee and Jimmy Wang from Prep, went above and beyond and were entered into the Bonus round, where they achieved remarkable success. Their achievements highlighted the true magic of Mathematics in our school community.

World Maths Day On Monday 6th February 2023, the spirit of curiosity and enthusiasm filled the air as we came together to celebrate World Maths Day. The whole school united in joy and excitement, engaging in a variety of activities that made learning Mathematics a delightful adventure.

From hands-on experiments to thought-provoking challenges, the day was filled with fun and practical experiences. The children took part in skillful real-life activities, empowering them to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems, strengthening logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Activities like creating a perimeter and area city, tessellating shapes to form patterns and designing wallpaper and creating a human Venn diagram to sort objects, enabled the children to discover the beauty of Mathematics beyond the classroom. The Prep children planned, designed and taught their own Maths lesson to each class and all the children took part in their engaging and practical lessons.

Pancake Race One again, the Swallows and Swifts raced on Shrove Tuesday for the much coveted frying pan trophy.

An event tossed up into the air, sometimes even falling flat on the playground. Never mind, nobody eats the pancakes used. Much cheering and excitement as all the year groups battle for their House.

The result? Once again it was a tie.

Easter Project Comments from the Adjudicator: Firstly I would like to say an enormous thank you to all of you for taking part in this year’s Easter Project. The entries are outstanding and I am particularly impressed with those of you who found a Charles who no one else thought of. I really hope you learnt much from it and enjoyed the challenge.

The Art Work was exceptional and I think those in the earlier years, Nursery to Upper Kindergarten, should be very proud. You made such an effort using bright colours, anything sparkly, and making Charles III crowns and Royal Robes. All fit for the occasion. I think they missed out when planning the Coronation this year, and should have sought advice from Goodwyn children when it came to designs.

The array of Charles’ we had from Charles 11 to Charles III, but not Charles I (I wonder why), Charlie Brown, Charles Darwin, Charlie Chaplin, Charles de Gaulle, Charles Dickens and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We had some more obscure ones: Charles Lindberg, Charles Baddage, Charlie Mackesy, Charles Le Clererc and Charlie Watts. Not forgetting Ray Charles, Charlie Parker, James Charles, Charlie Austin and Charlie and Lola. We even had an Italian Charles called Carlo Collodi, famous for writing Pinocchio. But let us not forget Charles our next door neighbor, which was a very good piece of journalism.

Anti-Bullying This year our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Izzy, Aimee, Ava and Usnab worked incredibly hard to start new initiatives to ensure our school is doing everything possible to prevent bullying and to instil respect, kindness and boost everyone’s wellbeing.

We work closely with The Diana Award, who train our Ambassadors and equip them with the skills they need to prevent bullying and to deal with it effectively if it arises.

We were so lucky to have Adi Konviser come in to run a respectthemed art afternoon, which embraced the theme of celebrating and respecting each other’s differences.

The Diana Award have 4 badges which schools can earn. This year we are incredibly proud of our Ambassadors for earning 2 badges!

In the first half of the year, they worked towards the ‘Respect Badge’. We had a ‘Rainbow Respect Day’, where the children came dressed in their favourite colour. The focus was about being proud of who we are, what we like and celebrating it all!

The whole school used their bodies to create the word ‘RESPECT’ in the playground. It was a very special week!

In the second half of the year, the Ambassadors worked towards the ‘Wellbeing Badge’. They supported ‘Mental Health Week’ and came up with wonderful ideas to boost wellbeing across the school.

One of the highlights was when they paired up year groups and created fun wellbeing sessions for the older and younger children to enjoy together. New friendships were formed throughout the school and it certainly made everyone smile :-) Aimee, Ava, Usnab and Izzy should be very proud of what they achieved.

We are so sad to see Izzy, Aimee and Ava leave, however we know our new Ambassadors, Alma, Tamzin, Jodie, Oscar and Ashwin will be a wonderful team with Usnab too and we can’t wait to see what they do next year.

Delancy UK Chess Challenge The Chess Club participated again this year in the UK Delancey Chess Tournament, showcasing their exceptional chess skills and Goodwynian sportsmanship.

Throughout the competition, the club members demonstrated remarkable strategic thinking and tactical prowess, cleverly outmanoeuvring their opponents and displaying impressive foresight. Congratulations to Ollie Bresler and Jimmy Wang for their outstanding performance in advancing to the regional tournaments.

Science Day Bringing science alive by rolling our sleeves up and using equipment in a practical way is at the core of what we do.

With this in mind, we turned our school into a 12-room laboratory for Science Day, to inspire the children to hypothesise, identify, observe and draw conclusions based on age-appropriate experiments and discussing them using scientific language.

Sponsored Read Before World Book Day, we had a read-a-thon and raised over £4,000 to convert the telephone box into a Library for the Playground. Thank you to all the sponsors.

World Book Day The Goodwyn theme for the day was ‘Mr & Miss’ characters, from the well-known series of books.

There was the choice of making up a new one and much thought had been put into that. There were popular ones, with Mr Bump and Little Miss Princess being the most popular. In all there were about 81 different characters.

The day was spent finding out about books and the joys of reading.

Coronation Party All the lunch tables and benches were assembled in the playground. Decked in their full Royal regalia, in readiness for the hungry excited children. It was the first coronation for seventy years, so there was an heir….. sorry air of wonder and interest.

The food was served and all were in celebratory mood. Thinking of King Charles III and saying long may he reign over us. We didn’t say long may he rain over us, but he did!! We all had to make a quick rush to get back into the building. Luckily, we had finished eating. We know King Charles has a good sense of humour, but that was…….yes, yes, we were going to write…absolutely fantastic and very funny. Your Majesty, thank you.

That should keep us out of the Tower.

Music

Prep: Drama One of the topics that Prep covered in Drama lessons was Evacuees in the Second World War. They made freeze frames to show some of the scenes including saying goodbye at the railway station, on the train and being chosen by a family at the end of the journey.

Transition: Trip to Barbican Transition went to the Barbican to watch a concert put on by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Presenter, Rachel Leech, led the concert, which was based on the award-winning children’s storybook – “I Need My Monster”

The story was all about a little boy who cannot sleep without his friendly monster Gabe appearing first and we heard music

by Saint-Saëns, Mussorgsky, Bartók and Leroy Anderson amongst others and a brand-new song for us to sing!

The orchestra instruments were amazing to hear and see in person and each song featured a different favourite - the strings, the brass, the percussion and the woodwinds.

An all-around fantastic day!

My class and I went to The Barbican today. I felt very excited in the morning because we were going into central London. I sat next to my friend Anthony on the coach. We watched a show that was about a boy who could not sleep without his monster under the bed. I thought the book was childish but I loved the music. My favourite instrument was the double base because the sound was smooth.

Eashan Gupta Today was amazing! We got on a coach and went to The Barbican to see a musical show called “I need my monster.” It was so cool to see a big real life orchestra with loads of instruments including a xylophone. My favourite part was listening to the music of the orchestra. I had a wonderful time and loved every minute of the show. We saw a lady that was doing sign language matching the person speaking. It was interesting.

Dayla Kirschner On November 3rd 2022, Transition went on a school trip to The Barbican in London to see a musical show. It was amazing. My favourite part was when all the monsters came at one time because the music was loud and exciting! I loved joining in with some of the songs.

Barnet Infant Music Festival The 2022 Barnet Infant Music Festival was a success! Transition learned 4 songs all based around a book called “The Opposite” by Tom MacRae. We sang the Beatles song “Hello, Goodbye”, “The Breakfast Calypso”, “The Opposite Song” and “Blame It on the Opposite”, together with other local schools. We then performed our own piece - “Rockin’ Robin”, complete with our cool sunglasses on and actions! The other schools all performed too and we got the chance to hear their contributions. It was a great introduction into choir singing, which continues into KS2 with the Junior Music Festival, Watford Festival and other choir opportunities that Goodwyn take part in.

North London Festival

Watford Festival

We love entering the NLF - it’s been a tradition for many years. Our choir entry was submitted online again this year and we placed 2nd!

Taking part in the Watford Festival with our choir was such a fun experience! Goodwyn Choir performed a “London Medley” which had been specially arranged for us by Simon Grant at a previous festival.

Out of the singers who performed Jonah Zekaria received 2nd place and Sienna Akmal received a highly commended certificate.

Of our recorders entered, Hayden received 1st place. He was then also invited to perform at a special concert with the most impressive entrants. Jimmy Wang placed second.

To our wonderful surprise, Simon Grant was in the audience, watching us perform his arrangement! This was also the first live performance we’d taken part in since Covid restrictions. What a treat.

In the individual entries - we had 2 recorder players place 1st and 2nd in their categories and several singers debut their solos at the Watford Festival too.

Our school were invited to take part in a National song of solidarity for Ukraine in Eurovision 2023.

Choirs, schools and groups from across the country all performed and recorded themselves singing ‘With a Little Help From My Friends’ by the Beatles. The Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon invited us to perform in front of one of their warplanes and they filmed us for social media! What an incredible opportunity and so much fun!

Music Cafés Our pupils who take 1:1 peri lessons all perform a piece they’ve been working on to share with their parents over tea and biscuits. It’s a wonderful way to showcase their progress and give our young musicians a stage to perform on! For some, it was their very first time!

Sport For Years 5 and Year 6, Mrs Minter-Green organised some tournaments and clubs.

Football Tournament Lower Prep and Prep boys participated in a football tournament.

Sadly they didn’t progress into the knockout stages, however there was some light as an own goal and a goal from Jonah, we ended the final game 4-2 with spirits raised.

A group of Boys from Prep and Lower Prep attended an ISA 5 a side tournament at Howe House School, Bishops Stortford. Sadly they did not progress into the Knockout stage, but their final game was positive and they felt more positive about their performance after that final game. Moreover they enjoyed the experience.

Football: Goodwyn v Trevor Roberts We had a 7-a-side football match against Trevor Roberts School. Seeing as it was only our second competitive match, we weren’t expecting to win.

The first half started well when Jonah scored to make it 1-0. Half-time was spent discussing strategies. The second half restarted quickly with a Trevor Roberts kick-off. Next, Alexander passed to Matthew, which led to another goal. When the referee shouted, “Off side!” a free kick was awarded. This made a brilliant individual goal, to make it 2-0! When there were five minutes left, Trevor Roberts School scored, to make the final result 2-1 to Goodwyn.

Netball tournament A few girls from Years 5 and 6 competed in a really tough and fun Netball tournament. Although they did not win they had a very good and exuberating time.

Netball: Goodwyn v Etz Chaim Goodwyn v Etz Chaim was an amazing match. The conditions were cloudy, but all the children were excited to play The Goodwyn team had Sloane, Sienna, Ava, Jacob, Alexander, Alex, Lola and Rhia. The team showed good cooperation, excellent communication and lovely teamwork. Alexander was very good at scoring all six of the goals. Etz Chaim scored one goal. Everyone from the Goodwyn team was so proud of each other for winning 6-1! It was an amazing team and we worked fabulously together.

Inter-House Cross Country Held informally during the class lessons, the two houses battle it out.

The results are then counted and one has to remember it is the House with the least points that will win. If the house gets First, Second and Third, they amass six points. Fourth, fifth and sixth places has fifteen points and come second.

London Borough of Barnet Swimming Gala The event has been reintroduced after a break due to Covid and it was being held for the first time in the new pool. So hopefully it will now return to being an annual event.

Goodwyn came 8th out of 15 schools. Competition was very tough as there were many club swimmers in the competition. Our pupils did so well and performed to the best they possibly could have.

Sports Day This was held on the Top Field at Mill Hill School. (It seems with the rugby season extending the number of days available have been reduced and StoneX Park (Copthall Stadium) is always fully booked.) Nevertheless, the venue we are offered is great and the enjoyment is just the same.

It was very enjoyable and competitive in a fun way. Do your best and be happy. At the end of the event, we found that Swallows were the winners, but Swifts did come second.

Harvest It was a bumper crop this year, with so many generous donations. The feedback from the Food Bank was great.

They were so pleased with not only the quantity, but also the variety of produce that had been donated.

The children enjoyed viewing the produce we put on display so they could see what Harvest Festival was about. Not just a special Assembly, but also an act of giving to say thank you for a successful Harvest.

A wonderful response, which gave hope to others going through hard times. Well done to all donors.

Also, thank you to the Friends of Goodwyn who have also continued receiving and delivering gifts for the Food Bank throughout the year.

Remembrance Day All gathered in the playground to remember those who gave their lives in the two World Wars and other conflicts.

Remembering the sacrifice of so many. The Head Boy and Head Girl read the poem and then at eleven o’clock, all fell silent for two minutes. In the silence, we can hear the guns from Hyde Park.

The Charity Prefects did a good job promoting the “sale” of the Poppies.

Children In Need The Children In Need event - also referred to as “Pudsey Day”, was on Friday, November 18th 2022.

The charity prefects: Reece and Seb were busy selling the merchandise from Monday to Friday which was donated to the Charity and given to children who have disadvantages and are less fortunate. On Friday, everyone was wearing their Pudsey ears for the whole day; both in and out of class and photos were taken of the children. The items that Reece and Seb sold were: Pudsey Rubik’s cubes, Pudsey key rings, Pudsey pens and of course, Pudsey ears. Raffle tickets were sold and there were eight lucky winners who received: Giant Pudsey, Small Pudsey, Small Blush and five crochet novelties.

The people who won these prizes were: Lola Baddick, who won a Giant Pudsey; Luke Coleman, who won a crochet novelty; Remi Goldin, who won a Crochet novelty; Loui Gonn, who won a Crochet novelty; Dalia Kirschner, who won a small Pudsey; Sienna Ricklow, who won a crochet novelty; Dylan Smith-Duale who won a Crochet novelty and Poppy Wiseman won the Beanie Blush.

Pudsey had to share the day with the end of Anti-Bullying Week. However he didn’t mind taking second place. Pudsey is a good lad and understands all these things. With the distraction of Mental Health Week the sale of Pudsey items took a while to reach a good level, but it soon did as it was realised that Friday was fast approaching. It was good to see a fine collection of Pudsey ears being worn on the day. Also popular was the raffle. With the prospect of winning a very large Pudsey Bear.

The winner was Lola Baddick. With the other prize winners being Luke Coleman, Remi Goldin, Loui Gonn, Tamar Kirschner, Sienna Ricklow, Dylan Smith-Duale, and Poppy Wiseman. A big thank you from Pudsey to all who purchased a ticket. The total collected will be announced shortly. Thank you for your support with these important events, and thank you to the Charity Prefects Seb Hill and Reece Posner. It was rather strange that there were so many other things we could have supported over this period of time. Seems odd that good causes select the same time as well established events.

Visit to bank On Monday 28th November 2022, Seb and Reece went to NatWest Bank in Barnet.

It all started as a normal afternoon when they were called up to Mrs. Hobden’s office and they got told under their parents’ consent that they were allowed to go with Mr Robertson and Mr Robertson Junior to The NatWest Bank to deposit the charity money.

During the car journey, Seb and Reece were nervous yet really excited to count the money and to see the total rise as they poured all the coins into the machine. Once they have arrived at the bank, they got the total of the money to a whopping £1278!

A grin spread across both of their faces since they knew they have achieved a great success in Children In Need.

Winter Fayre A great deal of effort and time was put into the organisation of this event and the Friends of Goodwyn certainly made the event one to remember.

The day was dry, which was wonderful as so much was outside. Santa was present and so were those eager to tell him what they would like for Christmas. It was fun and we were pleased to see past, present, and future pupils with their parents. Very well done to the Committee for raising £3,890.14 Thank you to them for their effort and time. Also a big thank you to all those who generously donated items for the sale, worked on a stall, baked a cake, and/or spent your money on the fantastic selection of goods available.

Tri4Goodwyn Tri4Goodwyn was an initiative to enable the pupils to use their swimming and running skills that they have worked so hard on this year, to compete in an event, whilst raising money for charity.

The cycling was a bonus and pupils took it seriously and we received many photographs of them completing their cycle. The swim was fantastic and pupils swam continuously in relay teams for their whole swimming lesson.

There was a real community spirit about the event.

The run leg was the last leg, and again, team spirit was high. Pupils ran to their best ability and many parents came to support. Over £2000 was raised for a superb charity called ‘Future Dreams’. Goodwyn triathletes can be very proud of themselves…. I certainly was.

In the summer term the children in Ks2 raised over two and a half thousand pounds for the cancer charity Future Dreams. The children participated in ‘Tri4Goodwyn’ a triathlon consisting of a swim at Copthal, a bike ride at home and a final run, where both the parents and representatives from the charity came to cheer on the children and present them with their medals.

Comic Relief Red Nose Day was still under that title, as well as Comic Relief.

The problem was the noses had been redesigned to make them more Eco Friendly. They were not to be sold to under seven year olds and it was felt we should not sell them this year. The children had great fun coming into School in their pyjamas. It was a fun day and just over Four Hundred Pounds was raised for the Charity.

Summer Fayre The Friends of Goodwyn had the idea of having a large inflatable slide at the Fayre. In order to do this, the venue was changed to Badgers Croft, which gave more room outside.

It was a great success, with children having several trips to the top and then jumping onto the slide and sliding down. All in all, it was a very successful event. Prepaid tickets offered at a discount, a licence to serve alcohol and many attractions to keep everyone amused. It was a busy afternoon and the weather was kind.

The effort put into the event was tremendous and well worthwhile, as a profit of over three thousand pounds was made. Thanks go to the Friends of Goodwyn and those who supported.

Topic Week This year we set the challenge to be have a week centered around a colour. Each class was given a colour.

Those were red, orange, blue, brown, pink, silver, gold, green, purple, white, black and yellow. The form rooms transformed into the colour and there were some great ideas thought up as to how to make it outstanding. A great result and it is amazing what can be done with a theme of just one colour. A very busy week and the Friday was Topic Day. With the parade around Poet’s Corner for the parents to see and then a quick parade in the playground so each form could be seen by all. After which, an organised trip around the school to have a look at the displays in each room. Then down to the park for snacks and some games. Broke up for half term at lunchtime, after a great week.

White House Letter Transition M each wrote to someone in the White House Executive Office. George received a personal reply from Jeff Zients, the President’s Chief of Staff.

Lower Prep - Cupcake Icing Orange excitement with Mrs Fox, who helped Lower Prep embellish cupcakes and biscuits with orange icing and different orange decorations.

Visitors & Trips Prep - Heart dissection We were delighted to welcome Mrs Taylor, a Goodwyn parent and Science teacher, during Topic Week. She made our theme come alive with a demonstration of a heart dissection. She also inflated sheep lungs for us all to understand how these organs work.

Prep - Old Operating Theatre Prep went on an outing to the Old Operating Theatre in London where they learnt about Victorian medicine and surgery. They learnt some amazing facts of the times - not for the feint-hearted!

Remove - Kirstie Beaven visit

Transition - Kids with Brains visit

Providing both historical cultural context of the colour pink and its role in gender was visitor Kirstie Beaven. Remove enjoyed learning and partaking in a fun, engaging activity designing their own costumes for the Met Gala.

Cecilia from Kids With Brains came to talk to Transition about Osmosis. She talked to them about snow and how osmosis helps it to form, before the children each got to make their own bag of snow! She also talked to them about prisms and how all the colours are essentially white. She showed them a kaleidoscope and has left us with all the resources for the children to make their own kaleidoscope.

Transition M - Art lesson In line with our Topic Week them of White, Adi Konviser came to do an Art lesson with Transition M. The children used White crayons to write secret messages on white water colour paper.

They then painted the sheet, revealing the messages, before decorating them further. Some children even ripped their work up and made it into a smaller greeting card!

Transition CR - Olympic Games Amy Ansell from Newstars came in to run an Olympic Games for Transition CR as part of our Gold theme for Topic Week.

Events included javelin throwing, hurdles and a sprint.

Everyone did amazingly and of course received a gold medal!

Transition M - Science Museum Transition M visited the Science Museum as part of Topic Week. We had tickets for the Imax Antarctica 3D movie, in line with our Topic Week lessons about Arctic Animals. We joined Benedict Cumberbatch as the narrator, exploring the mysterious and wild continent of Antarctica. We witnessed never-before-seen footage and the latest underwater filming techniques that helped to capture the creatures that thrive in the coldest and windiest place on the planet!

EARLY YEARS

Nursery B and Nursery BG Trip to London Zoo Nursery set off on their school trip to London Zoo. They travelled by coach and were all full of excitement. When we arrived, we headed to the Gorillas who were just having their breakfast. Then we were lucky enough to have a private tiger talk, where the children learnt lots of new facts and saw the tiger Mummy and her cubs playing.

We stopped for lunch at Penguin Beach and watched the penguins enjoying a swim.

After this, we fluttered over to the butterfly house and some of the children were lucky enough to gently hold the butterflies. The tiny giants were a firm favourite and some of us even braved the spider room! We made our way to the flamingos and then onto the lion enclosure, where the lion was snoozing happily. Our final stops were the giraffes and meerkats before heading back to the coach and returning to school.

Nursery had a fabulous day out at London Zoo and the rain held off, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

Mill Hill Library “Books are a uniquely portable magic!” (Stephen King) Nursery were so excited to walk down to Mill Hill Library. We spoke about the rules of going to the library and the children remembered to stay really quiet and looked after the books so beautifully. They explored the children’s section and had the chance to look at lots of books; fiction and non-fiction.

We will be sure to ‘book’ this trip in next year!

LKG M: When I grow up Lower Kindergarten M have been learning about different occupations. They visited Kidzania to have a go at being pilots, doctors, police officers, shop assistants, window cleaners, firefighters, vets and more. They also had the opportunity to listen to lots of parents speak about their jobs.

UKG LM: Moving Pictures The children in UKG LM created ‘Moving Pictures’ as part of their Design and Technology lessons. They used their imaginations as they thought up exciting and inventive ways of bringing their pictures to life through a variety of moving mechanisms. They explored sliders, levers, pivots and wheel mechanisms. Their final piece of work was a scene from a story of their choice and making one part move, e.g. Jack moving up the beanstalk or Cinderella riding away in her carriage.

Transition CR: If I found a pot of gold….

I would buy a Bugatti car for myself. For my family I would buy a mansion with a garage for my car. I would buy a swimming pool for my school and my club. I would make sure every city in the world had schools. Everyone should have fresh clean water and somewhere safe to sleep so I would give money for that.

The thing I would buy is a Bugatti Divo and a Lamborghini. Then I could have a car business. The next thing would be a mansion for my family. It would have a swimming pool and a garage full of super cars. Finally I would give everyone who is homeless a pot of gold so they could find somewhere to sleep and be warm.

The first thing I would buy is a Porsche for me. For my family I would get servants and a cook. I would get my school a big swimming pool so that everyone can have lessons and learn to swim. I would build changing rooms. Finally I would make sure all children are safe and can go to school.

KEY STAGE ONE

Transition: Outings War Memorial Following a lesson all about Remembrance Day and the significance of the poppy, Transition took a walk up to The Ridgeway, to visit the two War Memorials.

After learning about their history, the children had a chance to walk around both memorials and see the poppies and wreaths that had been laid on Remembrance Sunday.

Tolmers In order to bring the two classes together for teambuilding, Transition spent the day at Tolmers Scout Camp & Activity Centre, doing a range of different problem solving activities and team building challenges.

I felt like I had joined the Scouts at Tolmers.

I liked being part of a team.

Anthony The Picture Hunt was good because I found lots of them easily. I felt proud of myself.

Charlie We went to Tolmers and it was fun. We built a bridge for marbles. We made shapes from blocks.

Christopher

I love using the big wooden shapes to make pictures. It was a lot harder than it looked!

Arabella

As I arrived, I felt super excited! In the TeamBuilding, we used half of an empty cylinder and once the ball left our cylinder, we ran to the front. After, we made a shelter in our groups from tarp, rope and sticks. Once we all made our shelter, the teachers tested to see if they were waterproof by pouring water on us! I got a little bit wet.

The picture hunt was fun because we got a chance to run around and to get to know Tolmers on our own.

Team Challenges My favourite activity was den building because Miss Morris poured water on us to check how good they were and we didn’t get wet. Also what I really enjoyed was team building as we played Floor is Lava and that was so much fun. The day was the best!

Floor is Lava team-building was fun and exciting. It was hard work moving the planks.

I found it really hard when we had to tie the ropes to make our shelters. I need to learn some knotting skills.

KEY STAGE ONE I woke up feeling excited because I was going to Whipsnade Zoo! When we first got to the zoo, we went to Europe and saw chimpanzees and bison, which really smelt! Next, we walked to see reindeer, white rhinos and giraffes. It was really interesting to learn that giraffes have to nearly do the splits to drink water! Then we saw adorable otters that swam on their backs and made cute noises.

What a great day!

Whipsnade Zoo

Ariella We saw zebras with clear black and white stripes. We saw tall giraffes that had tongues as long as a man’s arm and they were black!

We went into a workshop.

The man told us all about the four main habitats. We saw and touched special items from each of the habitats. It was a great workshop. We saw more animals before we finally went home after a really exciting day.

My favourite animal was the giraffes. I enjoyed learning how to drink like one and stretch my legs.

I learnt that they sleep standing up and like to eat trees. We were very lucky to go to a workshop, where I learnt a lot of interesting things. I learnt about the Savannah and the Amazon Rainforest. There were a lot of different objects to see. The ones I liked to see and touch were the bearskin, turtle and the starfish. The one that scared me the most was the scorpion. I had to scream at that!

I was excited. The first animals we saw were chimpanzees. They were climbing on branches and they were screaming loudly. We also saw giraffes with their long, stretchy necks. Then we saw the otters. They were very cute and they looked at me! Next, we saw a zebra and he was with his friend. I liked the trip a lot!

I was so excited when we went on our school trip to Whipsnade Zoo. The otters were so cute that I asked my teacher if I could take one home. We walked a long way seeing spotty giraffes with long, long necks, butterflies that usually live in hot countries and big rhinos! I enjoyed it a lot because I had never been there before but I would like to go again.

St Paul’s Church In RE, Transition learnt about the Church, as part of our Special Places topic. We were lucky enough to be able walk up to St. Paul’s Church, where we met Reverend Jo. She talked to us about the Church and encouraged the children to walk around and identify features that would only be found in a church.

KEY STAGE TWO

Lower Remove travel back to the Stone Age! In the Spring term, we went on an exciting journey back in time to the Stone Age! First, we travelled to the amazing Celtic Harmony Stone Age village where we were immersed in the Stone Age world. We soon realised how hard it was to survive in the stone age and we had to learn quick! We learnt the art of flint knapping, pot making and food preparation before eating a welldeserved lunch in our roundhouse. When we returned to school, we studied a book called ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura, a story of a boy who magically travels back thousands of years and experiences life in the Stone Age. With our imaginations sparked, we set about writing our own Stone Age adventures!

I saw myself in a giant cave. I could see hieroglyphs on the shiny walls. I saw cave men striking flint stones together to try to make a fire to keep warm.

They asked me what I was wearing and I said, it’s a jumper, it keeps you warm.

They all gasped. They wished they had one. I saw them knapping the flint. It was being chipped to make cutting tools and they were sharpening their tools on the grindstone.

Oliver

When they showed me all of the different things they made from stone like the menacing spears I really began to panic. It was only when they pointed to all of the beautiful paintings on the wall that I saw pictures of people hunting with their spears and I finally felt safe.

Ruby You won’t believe what happened to me yesterday. I was just walking to the park when I fell down the hill. Tumbling, tumbling, tumbling.

Suddenly, it must have been magical because I was in the stone age! But how? Just how? I thought, walk.

Just walk.

We could see the bright blue beautiful sky, empty of pollution as well as a sabre-toothed tiger with sharp, sharp jaws. We could see children happily gathering berries for their family to eat.

Against the strong wind, we heard the crackling of the fire. Out of nowhere, I saw a mammoth stampeding like a devil. I was terrified.

Jess Everybody says there’s no such thing as time travel but this very morning I was walking in the vast green forest when I fell into a hole – I was in the stone age! I could see the misty fog in the distance and I could smell the bison meat roasting on the fire. I could see the fire crackling and lighting up the pitch black night.

Leo S I was just ambling in the woods when I fell down, down, down. Later, I saw a girl but she didn’t look like any of the girls I knew and I didn’t look like any of the boys that she knew. She took me to her camp, it was very unfamiliar to me. The older men in the tribe were using their long sharp spears to catch fish. Someone shouted, ‘deer’ and everyone chased with their almighty spears.

Ethan

I looked around. I was utterly and completely lost. Over the trees in the distance I could see a red robin chirping. I walked and walked. Beside me there was a person using a spear to kill a woolly mammoth.

Listen carefully to my tale. I was having a lovely peaceful stroll when down, down, down I fell. I fell into a deep, deep cave. The next thing I knew I was being taken to a strange roundhouse.

First I wondered if all that I saw was safe.

Dylan In the distance I could see an angry tribe trying to kill a sabre-toothed tiger.

But whatever they threw at it, it just crushed in its jaws. I could hear the slingshots vibrating. I could taste the sweet berries we had gathered earlier.

Jacob Yesterday I was out scuba diving… as usual… when the most amazing thing happened to me. I swam to the bottom of the ocean and found a worm hole in the sand. It was very cool. It dragged me in and I suddenly found myself in the stone age!

KEY STAGE TWO

As usual, I jumped out of bed and rushed downstairs as fast as a cheetah.

When I got downstairs, I picked out some scrumptious breakfast, licking my lips. After I had eaten my giant stack of pancakes with maple syrup, I brushed my teeth and ran out to play. When I got to the path in the woods I ran and tripped. As I woke up, I was bubbling up like a fizzy drink.

Chloe Marks I looked around this strange new land and I could see a tiny spark although it was a very long way away. I walked towards it and eventually I got there.

To my surprise, I found that it wasn’t just a tiny spark, it was a big fire, in fact it was a colossal fire. Around the fire, there was a cave family and sitting with them was a girl. But what oh what was she wearing?? It was all so strange but I loved it. Now I never want to go home!

I saw colossal caves with cave paintings inside. Over the green fields I could see the sabre toothed tiger as orange as fire. I could barely open my eyes. Then I heard the rough cave people fighting harshly for some food in the forest.

Shivaan I was exploring through the woods, I could smell the misty air. I met a girl and she taught me how to make a fire. She taught me how to make tools to prepare animal skins. She even showed me how to kill a moose. After that, we had to move because there was no more food there. We were walking for days and then for weeks until eventually we found a new place with lots of animals.

Henry It took a bit of time for my eyes to adjust to the dim light. I could see a bright light and I stumbled towards it. When I eventually got to the mouth of the cave I went out and wandered and wandered and wandered. On the horizon I could see the kaleidoscopic cliff walls. I could hear the woolly mammoths stampeding and the bison grazing in the forest. I could taste the sweetness of the berries I had gathered.

I was in the middle of nowhere. I could see fresh, teal grass and blossom falling like snowflakes. A boy took me to his camp. I could see people rubbing stones to make a fire and it was fascinating.

Seth We could hear the soft breeze and the swaying of the damp grass. We walked and walked and walked until we came across a little cave. We tiptoed inside and we could smell the meat roasting on the fire. We walked forward through the gloom and we saw people dressed in animal skins.

Oscar Before school, I put on my shoes and got into my car. When I got to school I opened my locker and I fell in! My head was spinning and I fainted. When I woke up I was in the stone age. We could see the beautiful rose gold blossom falling from the branches of the trees. We could hear the lovely little birds singing peacefully and we could taste the fresh air.

Bibi This morning in the shower something crazy happened. It got colder and colder and then I fell down the drain!

I didn’t know at all where I was but I went to go and find shelter. It took ages and ages to find. But suddenly I found a boy, he grabbed me and dragged me to his den. Then I saw his family and what a strange family they were!

Against the strong wind and beside the river we could hear the menacing noise of the sabre-toothed tiger. Below the bright blue sky we could smell the boar being roasted.

Gulbahar I saw them using antlers to make tools and I saw them flint knapping. I had a go but it was so hard. I asked them why they were making a fire and they said to keep warm and to scare the animals away. I could see giant footprints and someone said it must be a woolly mammoth. I hoped the fire worked and scared all the animals away.

It happened on my birthday! I was brushing hair when my hair brush began to grow and grow and grow until it was the size of a woolly mammoth.

Then it WAS a woolly mammoth. I reached out and I could feel its smooth tusks. I could taste the bitter cold air. In the distance I could hear a menacing roar.

Unleashing our creativity in Lower Remove This year, we explored our artistic abilities through our Art and DT projects. We painted, moulded, built and evaluated so many creations.

Out on our trip to Kew Gardens, we ventured deep into the rainforest to investigate plants first hand. The year ended with a bang as we investigated the layers of the Earth in Geography, then created our own volcanoes and watched as they erupted!

Lower Remove: Walk like an Egyptian…

During our study of Ancient Egypt, we learnt about the rich history and culture of the Ancient Egyptians. We investigated the intriguing lives of pharaohs, role-playing as archaeologists and writing stories about what life as a pharaoh would be like. In Art, we then pictured ourselves as a pharaoh and used the vibrant colours and bold shapes to create our own pharaoh robe designs.

Remove: Ice Palace During the Autumn term, we studied Robert Swindells’ Ice Palace which inspired many forms of writing styles and culminated in our class assembly. We wrote in character as Ivan while he faced making a difficult decision, and produced non-chronological reports about staying safe during the colder months.

KEY STAGE TWO

Remove: Outings Bhaktivedanta Manor In February, Remove visited Bhaktivedanta Manor to support our learning about the religion of Hinduism. The staff were so kind, welcoming and informative; we learnt so much. Dressing up and role-play were particularly memorable.

School Trip to Bhaktivedanta Manor On Thursday morning of 9 February, all of Remove boarded a large, comfortable coach to Bhaktivedanta Manor which is one of the biggest Hindu temples in the world. George Harrison, the famous Beatle, bought the site and gave it to the Hindu people to look after as he couldn’t care for it himself. It took 20 to 30 minutes to reach our destination.

When we got there, we saw the wonderful landscape which was around 60 acres!

Firstly, our teachers introduced us to the ladies who would be giving us a tour of the Manor. The ladies showed us to a vast and deserted hallway where we removed our shoes in order to enter the temple. The temple was huge but very busy with people who wanted to worship the G-d Lakshmi who is the goddess of wealth and good fortune. After that, we were led to a small room where there was a man standing in front of a tall altar which contained the holy book Veda. He explained to us that their main G-d was Lakshmi and that this temple is dedicated to her. We also learnt that there is a spiritual world where G-ds and very special people go to, where everything is perfect and there is no evil. The people from the spiritual world can come back to this world to see their family and friends and then return to the spiritual world.

Secondly, we followed the guides to two gargantuan greenhouses where it was explained to us that all of the plants were Tulsi plants. These are used for healing. Next, the guides showed us their necklaces which were made of 108 Tulsi beads and 16 times a day, their fingers would go around the necklace.

Thirdly, the guides took us to a large cart with two enormous bulls which were going to pull us to the other side of the grass because it was covered in poo! This was a very bumpy 5 minute ride! When we reached the other side of the field, the guides introduced us to a herd of cows which all had names. We were given some carrots to feed the cows.

Most us felt nervous because the cows looked giant and scary but when we fed them, they put they heads to one side and hungrily scooped up the carrots with their long, slimy tongues.

Instructions On How To Behave And Conduct Yourself In The Temple Hindu temples are very sacred places to people who are Hindu and they are very interesting to visit but you must behave calmly and respectfully all the time.

Here are some rules: ◊

You should take a shower or bath before visiting the temple.

◊

ou don’t need to wear traditional Indian clothes to a temple but Y you should wear modest clothes. Make sure your outfit covers your shoulders and knees.

◊

Remove your hat, sunglasses, and shoes. You should leave your shoes on the shoe rack.

◊

Respect the people who are praying and work at the temple by being quiet and kind.

We hopped back on the cart ready to return to the temple.

When the bulls were moving particularly slowly, I got to hold the long, red riding crop and gently whip them to speed up.

Next, we were shown two magnificent gardens and we got to stroll under the archways whilst taking selfies!

Don’t touch, sit, or climb on any statues as they are sacred objects.

Be kind to the animals

No smoking or vapes or chewing gum.

Finally we ate lunch, which I enjoyed sevenths of as it was so tasty! I particularly enjoyed the salty, crispy texture of the chips and ate paneer for the first time. After lunch we went upstairs to get dressed up in traditional Hindu clothes which was so much fun! Then we went to the shrine room which was dazzling with jewels. We were given a flower to remove a petal from and then passed it from one person to another as part of a ceremony.

Enjoy the temple and the huge playground. It is amazing!

Fourthly, we were taken to some oxen and one of them found a way to scratch itself by poking its head through the bars, using a blue rubber pipe which was rather clever! Once we’d seen all of the animals, we were told an interesting fact – that there were 70 cows grazing on 60 acres of land, which was nearly 1 whole acre for each cow!

When we left the Manor, I felt relieved as it had been a long, tiring day but it was also so enjoyable as I had learnt so much.

Foxlease In June, Remove set off to spend a few days in the beautiful surroundings of the New Forest. At Foxlease, we participated in lots of exciting outdoor activities, honing skills such as teamwork, resilience and persistence. It was an incredible three days!

Wyman Fan One of the best parts about Foxlease is that they have over twenty activities. My favourites were high ropes, canoeing and crate stacking.

High rope was my favourite activity. My partner Aarav and I went to the top first. When we finished climbing, we were able to dangle. It was so much fun!

I loved canoeing with my friends. Rosie, Emilie and I were in a canoe together. We were a little bit slow. I had to do most of the paddling. I was also at the front so I could steer the boat. The water made it very difficult. Rosie accidently got her finger trapped between the boats but she was brave and powered through the lesson. Also, the life jackets were a bit tight.

One of the best activities was crate stacking. The way we did this was the ‘builders’ stack, the ‘safety wedgy’ pulls and the climbers step on to the next one. Archie and I went up to 30 crates. Then we got to knock it over, which was really fun!

Verulamium While studying the Romans, Remove visited the Verulamium Museum to extend their knowledge. We studied Roman artefacts like true historians.

We also couldn’t believe it when our Roman soldier came to life in the classroom!

Lower Prep: Bletchely Park

My trip to Bletchley Park Before going to Bletchley Park, my curiosity was peaked and so I did some research. I discovered that a man called Alan Turing was responsible for creating a machine called the Enigma, meaning mystery. This machine was a code breaker, cracking many codes sent by the enemy and so helped to end World War 2. I was ecstatic at the thought of seeing this machine. Upon arrival, we were given a tour by a man from Cambridge University and saw the rooms that Alan Turing worked in. I was flabbergasted! Also, we were given costumes of Cambridge professors to dress in. But, my favorite part was when we were given some codes to break, inspiring me to think more logically like Alan Turing.

Our visit to Bletchley Park Bletchley Park is a place where people in the World War 2 would try and break codes from the Germans. Lower Prep visited Bletchley Park for a day and learnt all about it. We went in and started by volunteering to be a character who was part of the 2nd World War. For example, someone was a code breaker, someone was a soldier fighting in the war and another was a scientist. The main person we were talking about was Alan Turing who had a big part of the Bletchley story from breaking codes and creating the Enigma Machine, all the way to his death. Another main thing we were talking about was the Enigma which looks a little bit like a computer. The Enigma was something that helped crack the codes in World War 2. We also went to a workshop and tried to break some codes together, as well as lastly looking at a few several types of Enigmas in some groups and reading the facts.

Overall, we had a really fun time learning all the different types of codes and about Alun Turing.

KEY STAGE TWO

Lower Prep: Bushcraft residential Our Lower Prep Residential Trip Our residential trip to The Bushcraft Company for 4 days was lots of fun. Everyone was as happy as Larry and we were all bursting with excitement! It was a long drive, about 2-3 hours away all the way in Oxford but when we got there, our camp leader was waving at us. There was an empty car park, so I was wondering if we were the only ones there. The camp leader told us to just leave our luggage in an old shack where there were many other bags, so I realised it was not only our class who were there.

We started off by walking to our camp where there were five huge bell tents. We designed our own flags which we could put in front of our tents and claim the tents as ours, during our stay. We learnt how to start a fire and we cooked our lunch on them – burgers and sweetcorn. Eventually it was time for bed.

In the morning we got dressed and got ready for the day. We played many games such as one called Twenty One. Then we cooked salmon and it tasted as good as smoked, fresh fish. The next day we made pizza and had burgers. I loved the picnic style food. We also set up an open shelter in the wild and were allowed to sleep in it overnight, which was exciting. We also made a little garden, and I was the gardener. We used sharp knives to whittle sticks into tent pegs and we made bracelets from a long piece of para cord. The day went quickly, and we were sad as it would be soon time to leave since the next day was going to be our last day.

The next day came, and we had to pack our things up. We played a few more games in the wild before getting onto the coach home which included some medical training. Suddenly we saw smoke! There was a crashed plane and all of the teachers appeared injured and bleeding. We had to use our first aid skills to help them. We realised that the blood was only pomegranate juice. Finally it was time to go, and we were sad to leave. Though feeling sad to leave the fun camp, I was happy to go home and have a nice, warm shower.

Bushcraft residential From 17th May to 19th May, Lower Prep went on a Bushcraft residential. We had to sleep in tents! Some people were worried about sleeping in tents for two nights but by the end of it we got used to it. Our camp leaders Layla and Jess were the BEST CAMP LEADERS EVER! They were extremely funny, they were really kind and caring. Some of the activities that we did were fire starting, camo and concealment, trap building and many more, but my favorite part of our trip was eating raw fisheyes. It all started with our camp leader, Layla, showing us how to fillet a salmon to the point where she pushed her hand through the mouth of the salmon then she poked its eyes, and she picked me to eat it! She also picked Oscar to do it as well. They were extremely gooey and there were points were I just wanted spit it out, but I kept it in till the finish. One of my other favourite activities was making bracelets out of para cord. I helped everybody as I was the first person that knew how to do it properly.

Quite a few people slept in the shelters we made on our first day, they were much colder than the tents. Plus, the whole time we were there, the weather was decent and for a bit it was REALLY HOT! I found this whole residential extremely fun, and I even got a ‘legendary status’ from Mrs Magnus. I would DEFINATELY want to come back again!

Our School Residential to the Bushcraft Company We had just arrived from a long coach drive full of heat and sound and when you mix them together it is not very astonishing as you think. As we drove into the driveway full of rocks, we stopped driving and we were greeted by a kind lady who was very energetic.

making shelters out of sticks, para-cord and a waterproof sheet and the shelter was one that we could sleep in at night. After that we made safety bracelets out of long pieces of cord. During this time, other people were making tent pegs out of sticks called whittling and we used knives which was really fun.

We put all of our luggage in the stable-looking houses and were all given a number. I was number 10, we were given a number because when the instructor needed to know when everyone was here we would scream out our numbers in order and whichever number wasn’t called out meant that someone was some were else. Our first thing we did which was physical was take a half an hour walk to our cabin.

Finally came the last day which was surprising because first we went to breakfast but as we walked back there was smoke and we approached it and we found our teachers in an airplane crash with red blood all over them. Of course it was a joke, but since we learnt how to be safe in the wild and use first aid we rescued them and I was Mrs Shelly’s favourite saver which I was proud of. As we walked back to the coach we took our luggage and the trip was over, sadly.

The first activity was making fires, and after that we made food on the fires we made. In my opinion the second day was the most action-filled day of them all. The first thing that we did was

Lower Prep: Story Starters Stepping into the dense forest, I felt nature welcoming the new day. The peaceful sound of birds rustling in the treetops, fascinated me. I took a deep inhale and closed my eyes to sense the damp emerald grass. As I opened my eyes, I saw dawn’s first rays of golden sunlight seeping through the majestic trees. Excitement flowed through me, when all of a sudden, the sound of a twig snapping stopped me, taking me by surprise.

Sasha Spencer Walking through the dense forest I inhaled the lush smell of the warm summer’s breeze. I ran my finger through the fresh green grass which felt as soft as cotton wool. The burning beams of light dappled through the tall canopy of trees which spread out like a blanket. I could feel a slight smile creep upon my face as I stood there, stationary, listening to the sound of the chirping birds immense around me. Stepping deeper into the forest intriguing myself into the wilderness of the world, I stepped on a twig, and this made me jump. It was like a pause, like a single thunder bolt on a warm summer’s day, thinking everything was calm. This sent a shiver down my spine.

It almost fascinated me, like someone placed the twig there just to scare me. I was having a lovely stroll in the woods when I stopped by a ‘TWIG?’ I took a minute to take it all in, slowly, closing my eyes I could feel the sun’s glittering rays bounce of my skin.

Rhia Patel Unlocking, the rusty chain that was wrapped around his bicycle, Sam was ready to dash off. Perfectly, the metallic key fitted into the lock and shoving the lock into his backpack, he had a thought that he was free from this prison-like school. The air started to suck up into his hairy nostrils as he peddled with force and strength. He had passed the school gates and after twenty minutes he was by Frankie’s Farm, the farm that was really old. Sam couldn’t wait to get home, he wanted to play with his new Xbox his mother bought him. The sun started to fall and Sam was getting hungry. But all of a sudden the path was blocked the way that he always had gone since he started secondary school.

Late evening on a winter’s day, a very tired teenage boy called James was arriving home, when on the outskirts of the horizon he saw lights blazing in the sky which were different patterns.

He walked his bike to the outcrops of the hill and watched adoringly just for a minute, feeling like he wanted to look.

He felt as if the lights were drawing him to space as shooting stars blazed across the sky. James pushed his bicycle out of the place that held him imprisoned all evening, then he pushed his leg over the seat and was off. He knew it was a long way home, so he took off his sweatshirt, peddling as fast as he could, speeding off in a blur. As he did so, the bicycle chain wrapped around the crank like a hand turning a doorknob.

Rafaan Ashraf The box hadn’t come by post, and it wasn’t until I opened the door that I spotted it on the doorstep. There didn’t seem to be a name on it either … I thought I had heard a noise from inside the box. I stared at it in wonder, my eyes were bulging. Moving around in a circle, I looked at the soggy cardboard, with its usual creamy brown colour.

Putting it on the table, I noticed it had no name on it and the only thing it said was, ‘From China.’ Looking around to see if there was anyone watching, I knelt down and peeped through the little gap at the side of the box. Filled with frustration, I could barely see anything inside, except for a thick, wrinkly layer of skin. Without warning I heard footsteps coming over to me and thinking of what to do, in panic, I picked up the box and hid it behind the radiator. With sweat running down my cheeks and my face flushing red, my mum came walking past. She stared at me, looking suspiciously at me, “I know that face, what have you done?” she asked, her eyes narrowing as she stared at me.

“Nothing,” I replied hastily, and she rolled her eyes as she walked away.

Immediately, picking up the box I ran up the stairs, clutching it as if it were a bar of solid gold. When I reached the top, I ran into my room and slammed the creamy, white door shut. Without hesitating I placed the box on my desk. The box now made a whimpering sound…

Matthew Angel The sun went to bed and the moon woke up; Tom gently pushed the gate that led to the field. It had been a tiring day for Tom as he loosened his tie and undid his top button.

As I stepped into the wood, I could see the nature that came to welcome the new day. The rays of morning sunlight brightened up the day and I could hear the majestic birds invading my ear. I felt so calm like it was just me in the world. The woodland trees towered over me, shielding me from the sun light. The spidery tangle of trees and bushes made a calm cracking sound and the dewy grass made a majestic noise as I walked. The quietness of the forest from the lack of people just felt odd. It was quiet. The flickering of the shadows were just amazing. I could smell the fresh air coming to me, the rough ground tumbling towards me.

Every step felt calmer and I felt like I was in a bubbling hot tub. As I carried on walking I inhaled the nature as everything stretched out.

Oscar Weingarten I took a step into the forest and closed my eyelids, taking in a deep breath of the fresh summer’s air. Clouds like cotton balls scattered around the sky as I felt a light breeze drift across my cheeks. I had noticed the sky was a shimmering light blue and twigs, logs and berries hid around a hill of crisp golden leaves. Hearing twittering birds singing and grasshoppers jumping I felt calm and relaxed and carried on exploring. It was then that I heard a titanic... CRUNCH! I thought that I had stomped on an animal’s back. Sprinting back in horror, my mouth hung wide open with shock, however it was luckily just a small log. A smile appeared on my spotty face, feeling relived, then I stared down seeing the emerald green grass shiny and I could see my own reflection. I was amazed by its beauty and it made me shiver alongside having goosebumps inside and out. The rays of sunlight shone through the majestic trees following the shadows of nature.

Lola Baddick As I ran into the forest, I stopped and looked around me. I had a moment to think what I could see around me as I looked around the majestic magical trees that stood tall and proud. Walking through the forest, I could smell the fresh and sweet air so I stopped once more and took a deep breath in and a deep breath out. I felt relaxed. Running through the forest I could the birds singing in their nests, cracking twigs under my feet. Roots were popping out the ground and as I kept walking, I tripped over a root, and fell on the hard and hot ground. The hot blazing sun shone on my face. It felt amazing!

KEY STAGE TWO As I took my first step into the woods, I could feel the delicate breeze whip around in my hair. It was so magical and spinning round, I inhaled the fresh air, giving myself a few minutes to take in what was around me. Golden rays of light peeked through the trees like it was playing hide and seek with me, the beams reflecting on tall, proud, green umbrellas. I felt like I was in a dream of wonders, like I had just found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Stepping in further, with excitement rushing through my veins, I tilted my head up, listening as birds sung their song and the golden leaves danced about on their branches. The sun’s beams soaked up the glossy dew drops of the lush grass, and to me it was purely magical. I ran and leaped through the woods feeling as if it was the best day of my life. Eventually I sat down and brushed my hands down the grass. It tickled and made me giggle as the smell wafted right up my nostrils.

Going further in the woods, I watched as the birds danced delicately, with their frail wings flapping in the wind.

I stepped on a twig which created a long lasting shiver down my spine. It was a dream, so I decided to stay a little longer.

Chloe Hopkins Whilst he ran down the street, his notifications were going mad, chiming every second. The only thing on his mind though was the money in his wallet. Nothing could stop him from transferring this money in the bank.

Johnny had been told to do this six months ago, but this was the only day he wasn’t busy. Running down the hill his pulse raced and his body burnt because the weather was boiling, it was like the sun was just transfixed on him only. The pressure was a lot, everything was trying to take him down but it wasn’t working because the bank was at the corner of his eyes at least ten meters away. The money was due at six o’clock and he knew he had half an hour left. His legs pumped up frantically, although he didn’t realise his wallet had fallen out of his back pocket. Glaring at the Natwest sign his legs ached like he had been kicked in the leg over a thousand times. The pain was unbearable and he had to stop for a sit, so he did and explained to himself ‘you’ve got time.’

Exhaustion filled Henry’s body and he sighed as he thought about how long his day at school had been. It was very dark that night and barely anything could be seen and as he stared, squinting his eyes, he really couldn’t see much as the road was very empty. Exhaustion filled Henry’s body as he raced down the side road, getting away from the school gates, which had kept him as a prisoner for the whole terrifying day. Henry had an ominous look on his face, since he’d had an extremely bad day. As he paced down the road like he was an Olympic racer, he spotted the wonderful sky. Slumped against the concrete pavement, he glanced at the galaxy-like sky looked like he was in heaven. Joy filled his body as he lay down and he lay down and his with a million stars shining light years away from his planet. Explosive shades of green and blue shaded parts of the sky like a fabulous painting.

Suddenly a shooting star shot across the sky which could have a lovely movie scene for Hollywood. It looked like he was in heaven. Joy filled his body as he lay down and his ominous look spread into a big smile.

Alex Lemke Henry jumped on his bicycle and peddled home from school, knowing that although he felt tired, he also felt ready to relax. As it was getting dark, Henry turned the light on that was attached to the bicycle. Suddenly he looked up and noticed the sky was like an amazing galaxy with thousands of tiny stars. Henry gazed at the sky and his mouth was wide open, since nothing was prettier than this marvellous view. He couldn’t stop staring at the glorious sky. Not wanting to jump on his bicycle and ride home, Henry sat down and for a second time his mouth fell wide open, as a little drop of water fell out. He thought that the sky looked like a miracle and wondered that whenever you’re sad, the sky would always make you feel thrilled. Henry put his bike on the ground and twisted his head, looking at every single part of the sky.

As soon as I ran into the forest, I was already out of breath, then something caught my eye. The forest felt and looked different, there were no fallen trees and no mud anywhere, instead vivid green stems filled the space next to me. I felt peaceful and overjoyed whilst the sun warmed everywhere around me - a magical feeling that never want it to leave my body. Gentle breezes dashed past me as I walked into the bright forest, trees towered over me like a shelter. The wind whistled in my ear although it wasn’t as loud as I thought. I felt exhilarated and felt like I was the daughter of Mother Nature. The smell of daisies made a tickle in my nose, birds flew past like I was Cinderella in a movie. The sun was so bright I had to look away, but not for long as the view was beautiful. I decided to carry on walking to see what other stunning views I could see.

Sienna Ricklow Stepping into the forest, a smile was drawn on my face and I closed my eyes as I took a deep breath and listened to the birds calming song. The sun shone on the grass and leaves and when I looked up, I saw the sun beaming through the trees. Bending down to feel the hairy grass, I took my jumper off and tied it around my waist and noticed a squirrel run up a tree. It leaped from branch to branch, then it spotted me and ran off. I put my arms up above my head and ran around, it felt like I was floating in mid-air. I stopped because I was so out of breath and I sat back down, smelling the fresh air. Looking up, I could see the majestic trees witch stood up proudly.

Eventually the sun started to set, so I ran back home, hoping I would go there again.

Sloane Sher Loudly the rain hammered down on the shiny, metal cars, which it made a really ear-piercing, deafening sound.

As the young children walked past, they were spooked because the noise sounded like an angry herd of elephants. They thought the thick lumps of rain might actually dent the metal on the car if it carried on.

Suddenly the rain stopped, the sun came out and the loud and spooky sound stopped. The children were amazed and they couldn’t believe it but weirdly it felt sweaty and hot, so they decided to go to the local park playground. Disappointingly, the park was empty and all you could hear was the wind. The playground equipment was damp and soaked, so they went back home, walking down the busy, crowded street. It hadn’t been a good day after all.

Lower Prep: Viking Longships The Longship was a fast boat built by the Vikings. They had oar holes to fit the oars, shields to protect the rowers, a dragon head to scare off enemy ships, a skirt to glide through the water and a sail to move faster. A Viking Longship could carry 50 to 60 men and were used in battle. Bigger ships could carry around 100 men and were normally used to carry cargo, goods or things to trade. Viking Longships could not only sail in the sea but also in shallow waters.

They could travel up rivers and sometimes even streams! In a raid, a ship could be hauled up on a beach. The Vikings could jump out and start fighting, if they were chased they could make a quick getaway.

The boats were great for fighting because they could go on sand and shallow waters. People could hop off and get ready to fight.

The boats could go as far as America and Africa.

They were long and narrow, which allowed them to travel quickly for surprise attacks and to get away. The Viking boats had one big square sail which was made out of woven wool.

I have learnt that the Vikings were from Scandinavia. They travelled in their Longboats, called ‘Dragon Ships’ or ‘Longships’. These were long and narrow, this allowed them to travel quickly. They could jump out and fight and make a quick getaway. The long boats were used for war, trade and fishing. There were times when the Longships would capsize if the wind was very strong. The boat could hold 50-60 men.

I’ve learnt that Viking Longboats had lots of oars and a shield to protect each one.

There was also a sail to keep it streamline and you would find a stern at the back.

If the wind blew too fast they would lose control and the boat would capsize. If there wasn’t enough wind the men would have to work harder rowing the boat.

Viking Longships could sail in shallow water so they could travel up rivers as well as across the sea. The Vikings had to be able to jump out their boats quickly and be able to start fighting when needed. If chased, they also had to be able to make a quick getaway. The Vikings built giant, fast ships for raiding and war. The ships were long and narrow and the head of all the ships were dragons.

The Viking Longship was not always as fast and as big as it is now.

It actually never used to have a mast but after the Roman Empire collapsed in the 5th century they added it to make the ship faster and more efficient. They used these ships mainly for quick getaways but were also used for carrying crops and money. The head of a dragon was put on to intimidate enemy vessels and so was the red on the masts. The Longships were designed based on the original Scandinavian boat which were much smaller and less efficient. The Viking Longships were able to hold between 50 and 60 people. The ship was not completely wind dependent; if there was not enough wind they would need the rowers and if there was too much wind then the ship would capsize.

The first long boat that was made never actually had a sail. After the Roman Empire collapsed they decided to create sails. The Vikings made the Long boats very long and narrow so they could move quickly and so they could cut through the water. You could get fishing long boats, cargo long boats and long boats which men would use for fighting. Long boats were made out of wood, iron and fabric. They could be used in the shallow sea or on the shore. This meant that the Vikings could jump out, fight quickly and get back on their boats to get away.

The Longship was used in the Viking times. It was built narrow so it could travel quickly. When not at war it transported food to other countries. It could carry up to 100 Vikings at a time. It could also travel in shallow water and men ate and slept on deck. If it was too windy the boat would capsize and if there was no wind the boat would move very slowly. The Vikings would have to row the boat in order to make it move.

Prep’s Reflections and Final Words Year 6 had a Leavers’ Assembly, travelling back in time from the Year 2100 to have a reunion with their classmates, reminiscing about their Goodwyn memories. They found out about what each other had got up to before their retirement.

Aimee My greatest achievement at Goodwyn was when Mr Robertson announced my name and my role of Peer Mentor, my face lit up and I was I proud. I will never forget that moment along with others like when I got into the secondary school I wanted with the help of my teachers and peers. A lesson I will take with me is ‘if at first I don’t succeed I am normal!’ and that life comes with challenges that you work hard to complete. These quotes have given me confidence and resilience.

Ava I have been at Goodwyn for eight rollercoaster years, and my best memory at Goodwyn was making all the supportive friends I have today. My greatest achievement I will never forget, was when I got called out as Head Girl of Goodwyn School. Also coming 2nd in my backstroke race in the Swimming Gala. A lesson I will take with me is to never give up on my dreams. My teachers have inspired me to work hard and never give up. Goodwyn has been like a second family to me. So thank you Goodwyn, for writing the first chapter of my life that I will never forget.

Bailey Mrs Asher, Mrs Shelley, Mrs Magnus and Mrs Miles always pushed me to work as hard as possible and they always believed in me until the very end. One of my greatest achievements at Goodwyn was joining the school.

Cara My best memory of Goodwyn was when I received the job of a peer mentor, as I’ve enjoyed every second of being with early years, playing with them and helping them if they struggled with the work. Ethan A lesson I will take with me is to never give up. My best achievement at Goodwyn was coming back and settling in so quickly. My best ever memory of Goodwyn was my first ever day here at school. Mrs Shelley and Mrs Asher have inspired me to always to try my hardest. It has been fun at Goodwyn even though it has been very hard. I learned to never give up and I think overall that Goodwyn has been the best school I’ve been to so far.

Hayden My greatest achievement was getting into my first choice school (Dame Alice Owens) with the help of my teachers and the people around me. My best memory from Goodwyn is going to PGL with all my friends as it was extremely fun and I did things that I never thought I would do, like going on the giant swing and climbing the Jacobs ladder. A lesson I will always remember is to always work hard, because it pays off to do your best.

I have had a great time here at Goodwyn School, and I will miss the people here.

Izzy The person who I will always be inspired by is Mr Robertson because he always makes my day amazing when I see him as his jokes make me feel so great. He has really made me want to become a comedian when I am older because seeing people smile and laugh makes me feel very nice inside. My greatest achievement at Goodwyn is getting into the swimming competition and coming 6th against 8 older children. Goodwyn to me is like a family, and I am devastated to leave. I am so upset that this life journey has to end but Goodwyn will always be in my memories.

Jesse My greatest achievement at Goodwyn was when we came third in The National Britannica Quiz. We worked so hard towards our victory so when places were announced, a great feeling of achievement swept over my body and we left extremely pleased with ourselves. A lesson I will take with me is to never give up. An enormous thank you to all of my teachers throughout Goodwyn.

Jimmy My greatest achievement at Goodwyn is getting Gold in the Primary Maths Challenge, I was shocked to have heard I was one of the few children to have won an award and I have to thank Goodwyn for getting me to this high level. A lesson I will take with me is to try again and again until you succeed, something all my friends and teachers have told me throughout my time in Goodwyn. In all the days of Goodwyn, there was never a day of misery. Time flies when you’re in school and in the blink of an eye, I was in Prep. Thank you Goodwyn.

Jonah My greatest achievement was playing in football matches for the school. I was very proud to represent the school. My friends helped me get through things and helped me in my life. I loved making new, enthusiastic and wonderful friends. My time at Goodwyn flew by because of how much fun I have had and so much I have learnt. Overall, I will take the spectacular advice that the teachers have given me, which is always try your best and never give up!

Josh My best memory from Goodwyn School was the giant swing at PGL and it was fun. I was with my friends and we went so high that you could barely see anyone below you. My greatest achievement in Goodwyn was when I got the Gold Star Award in Lower Prep. A lesson I will always take with me is to never give up and when you’re down to get up and try again.

Kiran My best memory from Goodwyn was when Mr Robertson appointed me as Games Captain, which I’d wanted my whole life. To be awarded made me burst with pride. My greatest achievement by far was scoring and winning 2-1 football win over Trevor Roberts School. This win was a massive success and something I will treasure for life, as my first school win. Goodwyn has been my whole life so far and going through the years, meeting new friends is something I will never forget. This school will always be a part of me.

KEY STAGE TWO Luca My best memory from Goodwyn is making friends as we led each other through the years, always offering a helping hand with each other. My greatest achievement at Goodwyn was taking part in the first National Britannica Quiz with Jesse and two other boys. A lesson that I will take with me is that time flies and that moments like these should be appreciated. The last thing that I want to add is that the people reading this should cherish their time in Goodwyn School.

Maya Eight years of memories fly by extremely fast. Many different experiences, school trips and much more. My greatest achievement was when I heard my name being called out for the prefect role of Deputy Head Girl, my face lit up with excitement as I knew I would make everyone so proud! A lesson I will take with me is to always be myself and that smiling is infectious so do not stop doing it. Goodwyn School has taught me many different life lessons and stories and I will be sad to leave. Goodbye Goodwyn.

Mishall My best memory was at the very start of my Goodwyn journey when I met my best friend that I will have for life.

My greatest achievement is when Mr Robertson called out my name for the Gold Star winner and when I won Gold in the Primary Maths Challenge. A lesson I will take with me is that all good things in life come with hard work and dedication. I have been at Goodwyn for so long and made so many fantastic memories but now it is my time to say goodbye. Thank you Goodwyn for all of your support along the way.

Niam My best memory from Goodwyn is when I received the gold star in Remove, I was so shocked, I stood up and froze in shock. My greatest achievement in Goodwyn was when I was awarded the swimming progress award in Lower Prep. A lesson I will take with me to my next school will be to never give up, because if you think positive thoughts, you can do anything! There is one more thing I will like to add, thank you Goodwyn for all the wonderful memories we have shared together.

Persia My Greatest achievement was when I became games captain because I was involved with the pancake race, sports day and organising the sports equipment weekly. This felt amazing because I felt responsible and happy that the teachers were relying on me. It is a feeling I will never forget. A lesson I will take with me is to always be kind to others and they will be the same back to you. Thank you Goodwyn for everything.

Reece My greatest achievement was getting chosen to be a charity prefect because I like helping others and raising money for charity and giving food to shelters. Even though I was only at Goodwyn for 4 years, the memories I had were irreplaceable from year 2 to year 6. I have so much joy and so many priceless memories. A lesson I will take with me is to always be kind, stay positive and always bring people up never down. Goodwyn was such a great school.

Seb A lesson I will take with me is to treat others how you would like to be treated as if you’re respectful to someone, they will respect you back and if you’re kind to someone, they will be kind back and you’ll make friends quickly. I would like to thank Goodwyn School for these valuable life lessons that I will hold on to for years to come. I’ll never forget you. Thank you for the best 3 ½ years of my life and thank you to all the teachers and TA’S that have taught me over the years.

Sienna My best memory from Goodwyn was when the teachers announced the prefect roles for my class. I had deeply hoped that I would get the job I wanted. My heart exploded with happiness and a sensation of pride too. A lesson I will always take with me is ‘To never give up, and always try your hardest to succeed’.

Prep: Do you believe in angels?

In the Autumn Term, Prep studied the novel, Skellig

by David Almond. They thought carefully about what an angel means to them and came up with their own interpretations.

From what I have learnt about angels, I have been led to believe that angels are the servants and messengers of God as in the Christmas nativity the news of Jesus’s birth is delivered by an Angel and the Quran says that the prophet Muhammed was delivered the Quran by an angel who was sent by God. Personally, I don’t believe that angels really exist as it seems impossible for a human to fly (without a plane or helicopter…etc) even with wings as we are too heavy. As well as this, even if angels somehow disobey gravity or are just made differently, it is very unlikely that there is a creature that can just fly down from the sky at any time they want and tell people what to do. However, I may not see the whole picture as I am not a religious person.

Lots of people believe in angels. They are described as messengers to God. These holy creatures have big feathery wings and wear long robes. According to the dictionary, angels are defined as ‘a spiritual being believed to act as a messenger to God’. Lots of religions believe in angels such as Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The name ‘angel’ comes from the Medieval Latin masculine named Angelus. However, some people don’t believe in angels. It has not been proven that angels are real. Personally, I don’t believe in angels because scientists haven’t proven them yet, so nobody knows. I think that there are only good and bad angels, the bad ones living in Hell and the good ones living in Heaven. But the question still looms over us, is the Bible true that angels and God are real, or is it all make believe?

An angel is a winged creature. They are believed to be the helpers of God that dwell and live in heaven. They are also believed to protect good people. The main role of an angel is to be messengers to the prophets. They take care of people.

I think that if angels have a leader then it is probably God. I think they live upon heaven. The name angel comes from the Latin name Angelus, which was derived from the Greek word ángelos, meaning messenger. A variety of religions believe in angels such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

It is a common belief that you were an angel before you were born, and it is also common for smaller children to believe that your shoulder blades were where your wings were when you were an angel. There are three types of angels 1, Seraphim Cherubin thrones 2, the Dominions Virtues powers and 3, the, lowest orders, the Principalities Archangels Angels.

Ava I believe that an angel is a special messenger sent by God to deliver important messages. I do not think that angels have a specific leader, although I think they get commanded by God. I think angels are real although there have been some debates over if they are real or fake. I think angels live in Heaven with God and would be helpers around heaven. There have been numerous people saying that they have seen an angel, but it has never been confirmed. There are multiple different angels including Raphael, Uriel, Seraph and Cherub. There are loads of stories with angels in but the main one was Jesus’s (God’s son) birth. In the story God tells the angel to deliver a message to Mary and Joseph that they were going to be having Jesus. I do really think that angels are real, but I think it’s fine if some believe they are not real.

Seb Firstly, I think angels are magical creatures, sent from heaven by God to spread light, messages and Christianity, as well as joy. An angel’s main role, I think, is to spread light and messages, but their main job I think is that they are God’s allies, his wingmen to help him. I don’t think they have a leader, as they are all free and unique in their own way. However, I do think that if they did have a leader it would for sure be God. I think they live in the clouds, as from the quote ‘An angel sent from heaven’ indicating the sky, but at the same time they could quite possibly be living underground where people can’t see them.

Angels are extraordinary beings but the truth behind their looks will shock you. They are terrifying creatures that have a circle of wings surrounding a giant eye. They can move quickly and are friendly as well as kind to humans. They are said to be warriors and protectors of God as well as messengers. God is their leader and they have to listen to and obey him. They live in heaven, accompanying God. They are believed in many different religions such as Judaism and Christianity and famous angels such as Angel Gabriel are an important figure in ‘The birth of Jesus’ also known as Christmas. Unlike most animals, angels don’t have genders, they are neither male nor female and they are said to have intellect and a will just like us human beings. They are all made at the same time and are immortal, they can’t die of old age as well. Angels can have different personalities and are ranked based on intellect and knowledge, although they haven’t proven to be real, they are fascinating creatures waiting to be discovered.

Anti-Bullying Week Prep thought about how to show respect towards others, as well as their peers. They took part in a number of activities throughout the week and created some fabulous art work.

To show respect will make a massive impact on people’s lives, but how can we show respect? Always have a positive greeting to others. Be polite when someone does something nice to you. If you see an old person, help them if they look like they are struggling. If you have been in someone’s position please understand! Stay honest and if someone is new always offer to help. Don’t be like your friends if they’re not being kind. To be kind costs nothing but a good heart. Always be yourself.

I think you should be respectful because making people feel unwanted or unwelcome is never a good thing. Ways to help improve this are if you are in group of people and someone is standing by themselves invite them into your group even if you don’t really know them or like them that much. Another way to respect your peers in school and just in general, is to be sincere and always tell the truth. Be honest about your answer and finally, be kind it doesn’t hurt to be a friendly person!

Maya Being respectful is very important by putting your hand up in class, greeting others in a nice way and always including people without leaving anyone out. Don’t make fun of how they look.

Work with them if they don’t have anyone to work with. If you see someone alone and they don’t have anyone to talk to, go up to them and see if they are okay. If you see an old woman crossing a street, help her. If the old woman has bags, take the bags from the elderly person and help them walk home. Never be sarcastic towards anyone. If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything. Always be kind towards everyone and you never know, you may see a huge smile form across their face.

I think it is important to be respectful and you can do that by, helping people when they need help, being polite and saying please and thank you. Being kind to people and making them feel happy, being honest and not telling lies. You can also greet people and make them feel welcome if they are new at your school or anywhere else. If you see somebody who has no one to play with you can go over to them and share your thing with them. Be respectful to everyone you know even if you do not like them. Be kind to your teachers in school and ask if they need any help with anything in the school. If you do not have anything nice to say do not say it because it could hurt that persons feelings.

Izzy I think you can be respectful by greeting people at first sight.

Do not judge people for how they look and speak. If they feel left out, invite them to play with you or have a chat. If someone is being mean to them, stick up for them. If they feel sad, cheer them up by patting their back or hugging them.

Try and respect people by listening to what they say and treat others how you want to be treated. If you want to be treated like this then try to follow these rules and respect people in many other different ways. In addition, be sincere and authentic, be polite and avoid sarcasm, be considerate and smile all the time to show you’re optimistic. Also, you should be very understanding and listen to what other people have to say. These are very VERY Important rules to follow to become a more kind and a polite person towards others.

Pendulum Michael’s Diary A Diary Entry based on the Novel Skellig by David Almond This week has been crazy, we moved into a new disgusting, demolished and dirty house. My poor sister was born too early and is now in critical condition. My parents have so much to deal with so I’m not getting much attention. There’s a doctor that comes to the house regularly to check up on my sister. His real name is Doctor Dan, although, I call him Doctor Death because he never smiles and is always pale. The craziest part was when I explored the dilapidated garage. I encountered a dead looking man covered with dust and cobwebs with dead blue-bottles scattered across his hair like paint flickering onto a canvas. He laid there with his legs out and head tilted out against the wall. “What do you want?”

As I walked to school

He questioned, I was lost for words. “WHAT DO YOU WANT?!” He repeatedly demanded, raising his tone every time.

I just stood there as still as a skyscraper, until a familiar voice called out for me. “Michael!” He yelled. “Get out of there, it’s not safe!”

He called out. I turned on my heels and darted out not daring to look back on the disturbing old man lurking in the darkness of the garage. I entered my house and as it was late, I went to bed. I stared at my ceiling thinking about the old man. That’s all for today, I’ll update you tomorrow.

My Dream House

It was a bright sunny summer morning and I was quickly walking to school because I was really late. There right in front of me on the sooty pavement was a hole! There was an immense sign saying warning! I couldn’t resist it so I jumped straight in to it. It was dusty and pitch black! I felt very apprehensive.

When I reached the bottom I found I was in fairy land! There were little ruby red spotty mushrooms holding petite little spears in each of their hands.

“Who are you? “ I said.

“Mushrooms” they replied. There were little gates. I said “Can you please let me in?”

“No” said the mushrooms. “You need to get the code!”

“Please just let me in” I pleaded and the mushrooms did!

The land was full of vibrant flowers and lush green grass and so much more! A cute little fairy came up to me. She was wearing a purple dress and had pale skin.

“You need a better excuse for being late!” she said.

Welcome to my dream house! In my house there is a cinema room with large, soft, comfy chairs. This is my space to come with my friends so we can relax! The next room is my bedroom. I have a giant bunkbed, so me and my friends can sleep in it. If it decorated with hearts that I painted myself. There is a ball pit in my bedroom filled with rainbow coloured balls. I also have a rainbow slide that goes whoosh down to the kitchen! My bath is enormous! Big enough for an elephant! The wallpaper looks like the waves in the sea. My kitchen is bright orange, to help me wake up in the morning. I have all the pots and pans I need to cook delicious meals for my friends and family. Outside is my favourite place in the whole house. I have a pool with a slide and a Jacuzzi. As well as a pizza oven and barbeque area.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff with an alternative ending Once upon a time lived three billy goats and a troll. The three billy goats saw some sweet delicious grass on the other side of the deep river. There was only one bridge to cross and under that bridge lived an enormous troll but they still had to cross it. The smallest one went first. His little hooves went trip-trap-trip-trap. Who goes trip-trap over my bridge? roared the troll! It’s only me said the smallest billy goat. Please don’t eat me! My brother’s coming after me. He’s way bigger than me. Then I’ll wait for him.

The medium goat came along. His medium sized hooves went trip-trap-trip-trap. Then the troll said who goes trip-trap over my bridge? It’s only me medium goat. My bigger brother is coming after me and he’s way bigger. Then I’ll wait for him! The biggest goat then came along. His hooves went trip-trap-trip-trap. Who goes trip-trap over my bridge? roared the troll! It is me big billy goat. Then I’m coming to eat you up. The big billy goat butted the troll into the river. Magical fish helped the troll out of the river. The troll got to the billy goats again but this time the troll ate them up.

SPEECH DAY

Speech Day Returning to the Radlett Centre for the final act of the Academic Year. With the Prep Class taking a leading part.

The event started with the National Anthem and we all had to remember it was King, no longer Queen.

Mr Robertson welcomed all to the event and then we listened to the choir. The recorders were to follow later. Early Years were presented with their certificates and then they moved from the stage to sit in the auditorium.

Next were the School Officers reporting on the past year.

Interspersed with presentation of prizes. Ms Lisa Woolfe guided us through the prize list. Mrs Lisa Shelley presented the prizes and as we didn’t have a third Lisa, Mr Robertson ensured the correct prize went to the right person.

Deputy Head Girl Maya Levitt reflected upon her eight years at Goodwyn.

Pinpointing all connected with Drama.

She enjoyed working with the School Counsellor, helping with Space2be.

Also to raise some money for Children’s Mental Health Week. It is so important to be happy at school. With the help of the Friends of Goodwyn, each class was given a wellbeing box full of amazing equipment and books.

Maya ended by saying she resisted the temptation of ending with a joke.

Form Captain Mishall Ali gave a report full of enthusiasm and humour. When she was told she was to be Form Captain, she recalled thinking, “Good. I will be able to boss people around!”

Well that bubble soon burst. She remembered helping to change the lunch menu. The experience of the 11 plus. She thanked her teachers for their support. She was not so sympathetic about her parents, who told her they were burnt out.

She couldn’t understand why, as she had done all the hard work! She related some of the small things that together make Goodwyn such a good community.

She had unbreakable bonds with her friends, who have helped make her the person she is now. Mishall said Goodwyn taught her resilience, perseverance and being able to achieve goals beyond her expectations. For which she was grateful.

Charity Prefects Seb Hill and Reece Posner recalled a year of enjoying helping others and named some of the charities. The Royal British Legion, Children in Need, Future Dreams, Mental Health Week. For which, through the generosity of those in Goodwyn, a whopping £4568 was raised. They also enjoyed a visit to the Bank to tip the bucket of coins into the machine. Special thanks were given to Mrs Hobden for her wonderful support of all they did, guiding them through the year.

The Games Captains Kiran Haffner and Persia Lakani shared many happy memories of an active year. Simply being involved in the preparation of the sessions by getting the equipment ready, or the sweepstake for the World Cup. The great fun of the Triathlon which raised so much money for Future Dreams. The return of fixtures against other schools and the Barnet swimming Gala. A busy, enjoyable year. A big thank you to all involved for organisation and good sportsmanship.

Junior Journalists Jimmy Wang and Luca Quintarelli (who also spoke in his role a Deputy Head Boy), both spoke of their excitement and sadness of speaking and it being their last day. Over the year, they wrote about events at school which were used on the Website and in the Newsletter. They also focused on some of the things they enjoyed and have good memories of. The trip to a Mosque. A talk from somebody from Metro Bank.

Playing the piano and recorder. Helping others in the class and all of a sudden, it was the last day and one doesn’t realise how time flies. So make the best of each moment.

Mr Robertson gave a brief, by his standard, report of the year just finishing. Again, this year it was shorter as the Prep Class had given a good résumé of the year and there was nothing to be gained by repeating what they had done so well.

The Peer Mentors Aimee Goldstein, Cara Lewis and Jesse Sheridan worked well as a team delivering their thoughts on the past year. They were obviously used to working as part of a team, doing their “job” of Peer Mentor. They have enjoyed being with the younger children. “Watching them grow has been an experience like no other.”

They loved the warm welcome the youngsters always gave them. Aimee gave a short reflection of how she enjoyed being an Anti-Bullying Ambassador and wished the new team well for next year. Jesse gave said a few words about the ECO committee and the enjoyment he had from seeing people make an effort to think about the environment. Cara shared some quotes that will carry her through life. However hard it is never give up. You will never get there if you don’t try. Never forget you are amazing. Thanks were expressed to all who had helped them whilst at Goodwyn.

SPEECH DAY Performing Arts Prefects Sienna Akmal and Hayden Lee remembered a very positive year. Most enjoyable to see the other children get so fun enjoyment from Music and Drama.

They personally, had enjoyed taking part in Concerts, Assemblies, Music Café and Music Festivals. They enjoyed being an active part of Wednesday Assemblies and thanked Goodwyn for a memorable final year and they felt proud of being part of the Performing Arts.

Ethan Colover (Prefect), Joshua Santer-Gould (Digital Lead) and Niam Nayee (Welfare) looked back on the year. The range of memories was wide and contained things learnt, residential trip, responsibilities in school, Sports Day

and outings. Joshua was pleased to have one on his birthday.

Niam now feels qualified to apply for a job in the Ambulance Service. Ethan had fun and wanted to stay for juuuuuuuuust a little bit longer.

House Captains Bailey Brandon and Izzy Konviser started in a fun way about each other’s ability to ether write scrips or count up the House points. It was all true….sorry…in good taste and humerous…..humorous. They then thanked all concerned and highlighted some of their memories from the past eight years. Still in a lighthearted manner.

Head Boy and Head Girl speech: Ava & Jonah: Good morning, everyone!

Jonah: Oh yes, that was pretty funny, but also a great example of Goodwyn spirit.

Ava: We feel incredibly privileged to stand before you today as the Head Girl and Head Boy of Goodwyn School.

I still can’t believe that we have been given this honour.

Jonah: The 11+ exams were definitely one of the toughest hurdles I have had to face to date.

Jonah: That was one small step for a man…

Ava: Excuse me, and girl!

Jonah: Yes, yes don’t worry!!!

Let’s try this again. That was one small step for a man AND girl, one giant leap for mankind.

Jonah: Over the past six years, being a pupil at Goodwyn has been an extraordinary journey. It has taught me the value of pushing myself beyond my limits and working harder with each passing day. Goodwyn has instilled in me the belief that I can achieve my dreams, no matter how big they may seem.

Ava: Throughout this roller-coaster ride, Goodwyn has shown me the importance of perseverance. It has taught me never to give up and always have faith in myself. When I look back at my time here, I will remember it for the incredible teachers who have guided me and the lifelong friendships I have made.

Jonah: One of the highlights for me has been the various school trips we’ve had, like the visit to the RAF Museum, where we may or may not have gotten a little lost (says sarcastically). And who can forget our participation in the swimming gala, where we actually did quite well!

Ava: Remembrance Day holds a special place in my heart because it was the first time I had to deliver a speech. It was incredibly nervewracking, and I had to fight back the urge to smile or burst into laughter. Thankfully, I managed to keep my composure!

Jonah: Our second speech took us to Hartley Hall for a music festival, which was super extravagant!

Ava: Oh, I can relate! From the mental maths tests and all those gruelling past papers, to the big exam days themselves, it was a challenging journey. But looking back, every moment of hard work was worth it as we achieved our goals!

Jonah: Another highlight of mine was serving on the School Council.

Ava: Absolutely! With the support of all the School Council members, we were able to bring about positive changes, like the introduction of Taco Tuesday, which I know we all appreciate.

Jonah: Oh I love tacos! And let’s not forget the telephone box, Ava. Ava: Of course, Jonah, I couldn’t possibly forget that. With the help of the WHOLE SCHOOL participating in a sponsored read, we have managed to raise enough money to get the telephone box in the playground refurbished and turned into a mini library for everyone to enjoy!

Jonah: Ava, what are you going to miss most about Goodwyn?

Ava: Definitely Mr Robertsons straw hat on sports day, even when it’s raining, being the oldest in the school and sitting at the front for assembly. What will you miss most Jonah?

Jonah: Definitely not the school lunches….just kidding. I will miss all my friends and all the fun we’ve had at Goodwyn.

Jonah: I’m sure all of Prep will agree, that as we prepare to bid farewell, we can’t help but feel a mixture of nostalgia and sadness.

Ava: Indeed, Jonah. We will leave Goodwyn with our hearts overflowing with happiness for the incredible memories we’ve created. we look forward to starting a new and exciting chapter, in which we can be stretched and fulfilled having been given the foundations from our primary years as Goodwynians.

Jonah + Ava: Thank you Goodwyn, for providing us with such a nurturing environment, incredible experiences, and unforgettable memories.

Ava: Well, maybe a little too extravagant, don’t you remember the jokes that we had to tell, to keep the crowd entertained when the music went dead??

Places gained at The Prep class gained places at the following schools: Aldenham, Belmont, Channing, City of London, Boys, Francis Holland, Haberdashers’ Boys,Highgate, Immanuel, Mount House, Merchant Taylor’s Queen’s College, Queenswood, St Albans Boys, St Albans High, St Helen’s, St Margaret’s Bushey, University College and Westminster.

Seven Plus Places were gained at City of London Junior, Edge Grove, Haberdashers’ Boys, Haberdashers’ Girls, Heath Mount and St Margaret’s Bushey.

Retrospective Editorial We spoke about not giving in when faced with a challenge. Well, a couple who have not stopped trying are Jack and Jill. For many, many years they have been going up the hill to fetch some water. Jack fell down and Jill came tumbling after………but they are still trying.

Did you know that a Jack, and a Gill (Pronounced Jill and sometimes spelt that way) are measures of ale? King Charles 1 in 1652 attempted to raise the Taxes on liquid measures to boost his wealth. Parliament voted against it. So the King reduced the volume of the Jack, and kept the Tax the same. The volume mark on the standard Jack measure was marked with a crown (The position of the crown was lowered accordingly). Thus “Jack fell down”. The mark on the Gill was also lowered…. ”Jill came tumbling after”. It was general practice for the Innkeepers to water down the ale.

Hence, “Fetch a pail of water”.
