Welcome to the Fall 2016 QEII Lottery Home

I

t would be hard to find an Atlantic Canadian family without a connection to the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Each year, over one million patient visits happen within the walls of the QEII - life-changing and life-saving moments. The QEII Foundation raises funds to advance health care at the QEII. These funds are raised through a variety of programs and ways of giving, including the QEII Home Lottery. Through the generous support of ticket purchasers and corporate partners like Cresco, the QEII Home Lottery has netted over $54-million since the program began in 2003. These funds have supported large initiatives at the QEII such as a new therapeutic pool to help patients learn to walk again; an expanded emergency and trauma centre; Atlantic Canada’s

first academic neurosciences program; high priority equipment like linear accelerators for cancer treatment and diagnostic imaging equipment. The QEII Home Lottery has also supported the smaller items that make a big difference in the comfort and care of patients and family members. Cresco has partnered with the QEII Foundation many times over the years and we are grateful for the continued support. We thank each and every person who supports the QEII Home Lottery or gives to the QEII Foundation. You are helping to advance care at the QEII and are contributing to a healthier future for this province. When all else is stripped away, health truly matters most. George Holmans After experiencing heart problems for over 40 years, leaving him exhausted and often in the emergency department, George had life-changing surgery at the QEII. The main floor of this 5,243 sq. ft. home is entirely ceramic. Pets? No problem. Kids? A breeze. Spilly in-laws? Forget about it. This floor is low maintenance, warm and durable. The main living area and mudroom entrance floor is a “wood grain” ceramic tile that looks like wood flooring – a moisture-resistant, wear-resistant surface that has the look of hardwood without the worry and maintenance. The family room is anchored by a generously-sized, cozy propane fireplace over which hangs the large flat screen TV. Built in floor-to-ceiling shelving will ensure keepsakes, books and family photos can be displayed neatly and stylishly. Large windows look to the trees in the back yard. Between the open concept family room/kitchen space is an area that’s ideal for eating. And why not dine alfresco by opening the 12 ft. wide double door access to the back deck? Once open, these doors turn this dining area into a midsummer’s dining dream. And for busy mornings? A bench-style breakfast banquette is built under the large window overlooking the backyard. Or pull up to the large island in the center of the spacious kitchen. And what a kitchen it is – with soft, matte black cabinets and stainless steel appliances, a gas cook top, chic grey subway tiles and huge pantry for prep and storage with matching granite counter top, it’s perfect for family dinners or large parties. “I knew I wanted to do a black kitchen once I saw the home plan,” says the home’s interior decorator Meg Wallace. “I try to find unique features and grow my inspiration from the structural aspects of the home.” An interior decorator for over 30 years, Wallace is an expert in all details of new home construction, renovation work, and all types of interior requirements. And she has partnered with Cresco on their various home projects for over 15 years! “It’s always a project I look forward to. Wallace is known for her use of colour in the Lottery Homes and this year is no exception. The skylights in the family room, kitchen and master suite bring natural light to illuminate the colour – making for a resplendent and spirited feast for the eyes. “When I do these houses I use a lot of colour,” says Wallace. “The Lottery Home is a dream home – it’s a fantasy prize, not a spec home – a fantastic opportunity to show what colour can add to a living space.”

The starting point, colour-wise, for Wallace was the teal found throughout the home. “This richness of the blue green is perfectly suited. This home is not a modern contemporary style, it’s a modern traditional with formal aspects - so it lends itself to luxuriant colour.” Wallace also enjoyed using a mix of metals in the home – from copper to brass, oil-rubbed bronze and black iron. Together with the opulent colours it makes for a home that is sophisticated but still fun! “It’s exciting to have a blank slate and let myself go,” explains Wallace. “Martin and Brian (Martin Livingston, Project Coordinator and Brian McNeil, Construction Manager for Cresco) always have great designs. They are different each time.”

“We delight in showing people what’s possible. After all, in this case the client is the whole community – the thousands who come through to look at the home and who buy a ticket. And in the larger picture, it’s for the Foundation.” This five-bedroom, 3.5 bath home is full of surprises – from sun tunnels that make a room bright on even a cloudy day, to the piratethemed children’s bedroom to, wait for it – an in-home elevator. Cresco designed this Lottery Home to accommodate aging in place and those with mobility concerns. Features include the deck-mount soaker tub, zero-threshold shower, open concept floor plan with wider hallways, plus many other elements. The Savaria home elevator is a product engineered and manufactured in Canada. Driven by electric motors and counter balanced just like a commercial type, the myriad safety features and interlocks control the operation of the elevator and the doors at each level. The elevator is not the only high tech innovation in this home. Like every Cresco home, the Lottery Home is TechReady, meaning it is wired for both current and future technologies. Structured wiring is installed throughout to accommodate TV, data and telephone, all of which are fed back to a central distribution cabinet. All of these services are activated by a single connection to your preferred service provider.

There are also two wireless, intelligent access points for seamless WIFI access throughout the home as well as a security system installed and ready to be connected by the owners preferred supplier. A “whole home” audio/intercom system is an added feature that allows up to four independent audio sources to be broadcast to any or all of the 8 pairs of high performance speakers found in key areas of the home. The home theater, located in the lower-level rec room, features a stand alone, 5.1 Dolby sound system. This level also offers a games room, wet bar, a guest bedroom with abundant light and a full bath, along with plenty of additional storage areas. There is also a home gym just off the entertainment area complete with dedicated TV and in-home audio, neatly separated but still included by a wall with full-height windows and glass door. “It takes a village to raise a child and our neighbours in The Parks of West Bedford are a big part of our village. Any parent in West Bedford will tell you the truth of this statement. We call it group parenting. We look out for each other’s kids like they’re our own. We’ve already chatted about how important this will be over the years - we’re in training for their high school days right now. For now, while our kids are young, it’s about leaving them with our neighbours when we need to run a quick errand and our five-year-old is covered in mud because she’s making ‘potions’ in the neighbours’ backyard. Or it’s combining whatever is in our fridge with whatever is in our neighbours’ fridge to create a spontaneous dinner together. Our lives are so much better and so much easier because of where we live. The Parks is the very definition of community and that’s the reason we love it here.”
