Fiere

Fairs

Beverages between technology and business SHOW WITH MEETINGS The organisation of SIMEI, International Oenology and Bottling Fair, to be held in Milan from the 24th to the 28th of November, is proceeding at a cracking pace. This year the fair has an entire hall dedicated to themed activities and events whilst organisers are reinforcing their promotional activities and expanding their web presence. G.I.

It is around themes such as sustainability and consumer safety that the programme of the 23rd edition of Simei - the fair organised by Ente Mostre Enologiche and dedicated to machinery, equipment, products and services for the preparation, bottling and packaging of beverages (wine,

beer, liqueurs, aqua vitae, vinegar, juices, alcohol, oil, mineral water, fizzy beverages etc) - is organised. In terms of packaging we find that, as well as the conference on “Sustainable wine growing and oenology: directions, technologies and perspectives”, organised by the

Unione Italiana Vini, there will be two conferences held by UIV in partnership with Assovetro and Federlegno. The latter conferences will begin by debating an agreement regarding specifications relative to bottles and cork stoppers, signed by the respective associations, and end with a discussion on how producers and suppliers are increasingly willing to sign agreements in order to guarantee the quality of the product and the safety of those who purchase it. Some of the other issues up for debate are recycling, control and training. Focus on 11 - This year hall 11 will be entirely given over to themed activities and events. The organisers have issued an explicit invitation to

operators and experts to examine the challenges, and consequently the possible solutions to those challenges, which companies are facing. Here visitors will once more find the Wine Bar and the Oil Bar, dedicated to tastings of Italian wine and oil as well as, for the very first time, some workshops for sensorial analysis. The traditional part of the exhibition dedicated to bottling will be flanked by a further novelty, which is an area dedicated to mobile bottling on the back of a lorry. This method, which came into fashion in the ‘70s and ‘80s, has proved over the years to be an interesting solution for various Italian and overseas company typologies, which can use state of the art lines without having to purchase them and pay for their installation in their plants.

stenere i costi d’acquisto e installazione all’interno delle proprie strutture.

Contexts and confirmations Therefore, there is no dearth of vitality. Indeed, there is a desire to expand the fair, made even more significant by the fact that Simei will take place after a difficult year. Although the number of spaces occupied dropped by 10% in July encouraging signs lead us to presume that the gap can be closed in the second half of the year. The importance of the specialised fair is anyway confirmed by the exhibitors’ loyalty. A study carried out by Simei on some front-ranking companies who are to attend the event (despite the recession or perhaps as a show of bravery) emphasised how taking part in an international, consolidated and strategic event is a sign of the healthiness of the company as well as a message of optimism and trust in the market.

Increasingly international... Simei has always been a confluence of the finest Made in Italy products and the qualified demand of operators all over the world. Again the presence of foreign visitors is efficiently dealt with on various levels this year: from the mailing of over 100,000 invitations to the “Easy-access” preregistration area on the event website, to the renewal of the partnership between Simei and Pomos (a special department of the Milan Chamber of Commerce for International Business) to promote the fair in several overseas markets, especially Romania, Turkey, Hungary, Mexico, Israel, China, India, Korea and Brazil. There is a particular focus on Turkey, Korea and India, countries which will send

foreign delegations to cover the event. There will also be qualified delegations of overseas operators (managers and technicians from cellars, private wine producers, beverage industries etc), organised in partnership with the Institute for Overseas Commerce (ICE) in Rome. Delegations will be arriving from the Czech Republic, Georgia, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Morocco, South Africa, Vietnam, California, Canada, Chile. Finally we remind you that Simei has opened a representative office in Moscow staffed by Russians in order to strengthen their promotional activities and service throughout Eastern Europe. There will also be numerous foreign exhibitors. A delegation of Bulgarian

producers will exhibit for the first time in hall 13 while a group of French firms from the Champagne area will exhibit in hall 15. ...and virtual - To get an idea of what can be seen at the fair (and to organise your visit more efficiently) you can log onto the website www.simei.it. Starting this year, as well as the traditional exhibitors, there will be virtual stands, translated into in several languages and equipped with photographs, where each company will exhibit their products. The virtual stand will remain online until the 31st of May 2011- and may be continuously updated - so as to keep up the contacts established at the fair, while waiting for the 2011 ■ edition.

programmata, tappi avvitati male, colli rotti...

Marchi “chiave” in alluminio

Ergonomico e distinto

Automatic casepacking machine The Packaging division at Bortolin Kemo (Porcia, PN) has recently created a new IAB series casepacking machine for the automatic insertion of bottles into cartons. Capable of reaching 500 cycles/hr, with 48 bottles per cycle, it is fed with filled, closed and labeled bottles and a line of empty cartons, each holding 6 or 12 bottles, in addition to - exiting - the conveyor of full cartons. The machine processes half, one or three quarter liter bottles but can also work with 0.375 l and 1.5 liter formats, including with special or irregular shapes that must be rotated before insertion. Its components have been studied in detail to guarantee a fluid work cycle with no complications: feeders, picking heads, centering and insertion systems. This last function in particular works with the precision made possible by a selfmeasuring head (thanks to fast

motors equipped with encoders), but also with the delicacy necessary to avoiding any damage to the bottle. In case of bottles that are poorly positioned or different from the others, the machine stops to enable operator inspection. Carton track adjustment during changeover is also automated, as of course with the components that control and position the machine’s feed, so that once the cycle has started, the casepacker proceeds until there are no more containers, stopping in case of anomalies: bottles with different capacity than that programmed, poorly screwedon caps, broken necks… The automation system is distributed through a main command grid equipped with PLC that manages the machine, and in a few small peripheral grids dedicated to individual functions, connected via Profibus, permitting - what’s more - expansion of the line as the user’s requirements

change. The primary motions are driven by brushless motors.

cooling, affordability and excellent printability.

“Key” brands in aluminium

Ergonomic and distinguished

The new Key brand beverages made by Rhodius Mineralquellen for the German market are proposed in appealing 330 ml cans by Ball Packaging Europe, which, in addition to their appearance, bring a further advantage in terms of economy: since in this case they contain whey-based products, they are exempted from the obligatory deposit payment that in Germany concerns non-refillable packaging. So far, a line of cola, orange and lemon Key soft drinks has already been launched, and the beverage distributor GS Getränke Vertrieb is also promoting the whey-based beers “Anno 1337” and “Mobie”. These too will be packaged in cans - in this case half liter format prized for their benefits to image but also for their lightness, quick

MU4700/3 is the latest addition to Isi Food’s already vast product range. It’s a container with an austere and pleasant shape, characterized by an upper band that confers it with greater robustness and distinction. The handle is hooked on using a special system that prevents it from becoming detached and ensures maximum safety to the consumer; moreover, it stands out due to its ergonomic grip that perfectly adapts to the hand and fingers. With a level edge capacity of circa 4.7 liters, it is proposed as a container suitable for marketing mozzarella cheeses in department stores. Made with premium materials, it is also available in a transparent version and can be customized with IMLs featuring high definition graphics and images.

Welding machine for vacuum sacks for food products ELBA SpA of Magnago (MI, Italy) has developed a new automatic welding machine called SA90TVB, able to process heatshrink materials for vacuum packing food products. The new machine can produce sacks with wire side welding, bottom and side flat-band welding and flatband welding for semicircular shape sealing. Considering the peculiarity of the product, the machine can collect sacks both in bunches and in cascade on pre-glued tapes stacked in boxes. The sealing quality of the SA90TVB is particularly appreciated where the product’s easy perishability and high economic value do not allow for error. Thanks to its reliable seal and production speed (150 strokes/min), the machine has already enjoyed considerable success among manufacturers of the sack types listed above; it is also favored

(o industriale) in poche settimane.

because of the ease with which the machine can be adapted to meet specific production demands. In this regard, we point out the complete computerized management of the set basic production values that can be saved and recalled to be repeated anytime needed. Furthermore the machine SA90TVB can be equipped with an interesting range of accessories to satisfy the market trends that are so important in this sector.

For a “greener” tea NatureFlex™, a compostable film by Innovia Films, has been selected by Twinings to make the bags for Everyday, one of its most widely sold teas. The beverage giant, active in more than 100 countries of the world, was thus able to implement its project to employ sustainable materials for packaging its products.

NatureFlex™ is a cellulosic-based film that decomposes in a domestic (or industrial) environment after a few weeks. But this doesn’t mean it offers less protection guarantees or is more difficult to convert: its main characteristics include, in fact, antistatic properties, good twist retention, high brilliance and transparency, resistance to oils and grease, gas and aroma barrier and easy heatsealing. The metal layer that enhances its performance is so thin (less than 0.02% of the total) that it slows decomposition by just a few days, without interfering with the material’s overall biodegradability. In particular, the support is treated so as to foster the settling and adhesion of the metal, making that high barrier to humidity that makes it an ideal protection for Twinings’ teas. The converter, ASP Packaging Ltd, certifies its compostability and vouches for its green credentials,

excellent machineability and easy printing, in addition to, more generally, its suitability for automated productions such as flow-wrap.

Honeycombs in PS for fruit Among the various products that Vitembal offers throughout Europe, its stiff polystyrene honeycombs for fruit are much appreciated. Available in all the calibres and sizes used in the sector, they are made in rigid polystyrene, capable of ensuring the product an excellent cost-performance ratio. What is more the polystyrene gives the honeycombs a sturdiness and stiffness enough to enable them to be presented tilted on stalls without a collapse occurring when the two lower layers of produce are removed after purchase. The various models (40x30, 50x30, 60x40) are offered for numerous different calibres.

Food&Beverage M a t e r i a l s & M a c h i n e r y Recloseable, medium barrier

Cryovac® EOR211 medium barrier recloseable film enables opening and reclosing the packaging up to ten times without compromising the freshness of its contents. This performance is ensured by a layer of adhesive applied along the inside edge of the material used as the packaging’s upper layer. The first opening reveals the adhesive that enables reclosing the packaging with a simple press of the fingers. The film is 85 microns thick and can be flexo printed with up to ten colors. The EOR211 represents an ideal solution for products with a long shelf life, such as, for example, cheese (sliced and unsliced) that emit low levels of gases. Moreover, it constitutes a new opportunity for anyone who still doesn’t employ recloseable nonformed solutions (NFW, Non Forming Web), for applications that do not require an extremely high oxygen barrier. Functional testing was conducted on products of major food brands in Italy, Spain, Greece and Norway. One of Italy’s largest Grana cheese producers, for example, decided to verify its performance with a reduction in thickness (from 100 to 85 microns) and to ensure maximum quality in terms of visual characteristics, uniform opening and necessary pressure for reclosure (which proved to be lower than that of competing products with lidding closure). Passing all tests with flying colors, especially in terms of shelf life (with consequential reduction of costs), Cryovac EOR211 film is compatible with all modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) machines that adopt inferior semi-rigid films and are equipped for easy open solutions.

Food&Beverage

Pouring hot or cold An idea by Most, a company associated with Montelvini and S. Osvaldo: the concern perceived the demand for a dispenser that enables pouring wine from the bag in box at the desired temperature; for this reason it created (and patented) Biberoga. Easy to use with one hand, it makes even “friendlier” and more versatile the use of this container that is so popular in Northern Europe, and now increasingly so in Italy as well. There are many reasons for this: the clearest merit of the bag in box is its eco-compatibility, but this container type also ensures adequate protection of the contents from air, light and other external agents, as well as the preservation over time of its organoleptic characteristics, even after opening; moreover, it’s economical, it reduces storage spaces and it is light and easy to handle. «As of last year it is now permitted to package even DOC wines in the bag in box - points out Armando Serena, author of the patent - and today the versatility of this packaging is increased by the flexibility of Biberoga. The new dispenser, indeed, can be used to serve cold wines, fruit juices, noncarbonated drinks, water, tea, coffee, milk… and hot chocolate, coffee, tea, milk, mulled wine and whatever else a manufacturer desires».

A film from whey The project is ambitious: creating a film from whey, so as to take advantage of its excellent oxygen barrier properties, while at the same time creating an active and biodegradable packaging solution that is capable of replacing polymers and additives in multilayer packaging of fresh food products. This is the goal with which the European consortium Wheylayer has been created, promoted by ten industry associations and four research centers, and coordinated by the Spanish center IRIS and the Catalan association PIMEC. For Italy’s part, participants are CESAP (plastic applications development center, Zingonia, BG) and Promoplast Srl, a management company of the industry associations Assorimap and Assocomplast, which are interested, like other partners, in bringing out the potential of this cheese byproduct that accumulates in enormous quantities without adequate uses, until now. The consortium has been active since the end of last year, based on a three-year research plan financed by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme. According to the results obtained so far, the expectation is to be able to develop a film capable of extending a food product’s shelf life using antimicrobial mixtures derived from milk. Another decisive factor is the environmental benefit: in sorting and preliminary washing phases prior to postconsumption recovery and recycling, the milk-based layer could be easily separated from PE and PP layers, where conventional co-extruded films generate wastes of even 40% of the multilayer packaging. Within the Wheylayer project, studies will also be conducted on possible supports for the various polymers, the effectiveness of the Corona effect and whatever else contributes to the creation of finished packaging prototypes to then be tested by industry.

Mother’s shape bottle A profile of the belly of a woman expecting is by far one of the easiest images to read. For this reason, TricoBraun, one of the USA’s largest packaging manufacturers, featured it on a new line of containers for multivitamin supplements developed by the Canadian concern Purity Life Health Products (natural products for pregnancy) for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The container’s elegant shape reproduces the prominent silhouette of a mother to be, and the message is further strengthened by the photograph on the heatshrink sleeve that covers the entire container. The medium format is a 250 cc bottle, made by TricorBraun out of HDPE, with flip-top PP dispenser opening.

PET lite 6.6: from theory to practice It’s called PET lite 6.6, and it’s known as “the world’s lightest PET half liter” - developed on the basis of the Nitropouch concept and created on Krones’ Contiform blower -, and it has now passed a series of extensive testing conducted by an independent specialized center in Munich. What’s more, this study demonstrated the container’s resistance when undergoing high load, dynamic load (where the PET lite 6.6 containers showed far greater flexibility compared to traditional stabilized containers) and drop testing with standard road conditions transport simulation. There were also positive results for bottles with internal pressure of 1 bar, which is the value to which pressure drops (from an initial value of 1.5 bars) after circa three months in storage at a temperature of 20 °C. So that the PET lite 6.6 container - Krones representatives point out - maintains its solid and resistant character, and is thus accepted by consumers, the internal pressure obtained with nitrogen should be at least 0.3 bars. Honey in a glass with hologram - The O-I works at Orosháza (Hungary) has hence started up the production of a high end jar in flint glass, immediately recognisable, to protect the originality and authenticity of the product. On the jar a map of Hungary has been embossed, filled with the dense mesh of honeycomb cells. The logo of the Hungarian Apicultural Federation (a bee) has also been embossed and placed at the centre of the map. The jar, that weights 320 g, is for now made in a single format (730 ml capacity for 1 kg of honey). As a further guarantee of efficiency, each jar has a seal with a hologram and a six figure ID code that identifies the single beekeeper whose swarms of bees are traced to ensure they stay inside Hungary’s borders.

F

Beyond Beauty Paris, 13th-16th September 2009 - the annual engagement with the beauty fair opens the season of B2B fairs in a new location within the city. Accompanied by conferences and awards: some anticipations on the scheduled events.

Beauty the order of the day The preparations are in full swing for the first Porte de Versailles Beyond Beauty Paris edition. The show organized by Itec France, that this year will be held from 13th to 16th September, in fact moves from the central Paris fair quarter and stages three complementary events: Cosmeeting (cosmetics and kindred products), European spa Exhibition and Summit (dedicated to the world of spas, their brands and emerging trends) and Creative (where beauty industry suppliers exhibit). The latter area as usual combines packaging, as

Scheduled - to enable access to the update and study encounters for all, this year participation at the complementary conferences at the three shows is free. Under Créative, at the moment of writing three conferences have been scheduled: - Monday 14th September, in the

morning, “Packaging overview” will be held, or that is a collective reflection on key topics such as sustainable development, the crisis and its effects, the standards in force and that are imminent and technological innovation). At the encounter conducted by Jean-Yves Bourgeois, famous creatives will be taking part (Jean Pierre Goujard, Pierre Dinand, Joel Desgrippes…), as well as packaging producers and buyers of important user concerns; - still on 14th September, in the afternoon the subject will be private labels, creativity and brand image along with the big actors of the trade and their suppliers; - Tuesday 15th will in turn be dedicated to perfumes, with the intervention of “noses”, raw material producers and sector impresarios. (For updates go to the website

www.beyondbeautyparis.com/creative). The competition doubles - For the most young and (as yet) still unknown, the around forty brands that signed up for Beauty Challenge Awards accompanied for the first time by the Beauty Organic Awards. Judged by a jury of experts the winners will be awarded during a dedicated event the evening of September 14th. Among the categories in the competition, that reveal the organizers’ vocation as talent scouts and the attention always dedicated to the most recent and promising trends: ”Emerging brand”, “Niche brand”, and “Special award of the Jury”. This year sees the addition of the best certified biological brand, demonstrating the importance attributed to one of the three “hottest” topics of the moment (and of the future).

Two functions, one block A new robotized line that integrates deep draw thermoforming and carton packaging operations in a single monoblock unit. We’re talking about Unica, launched at Achema 2009 by Marchesini Group. Highly innovative, with two 4-axis robots made entirely by the concern for optimal feeding.

Marchesini Group (Pianoro, BO) has decided to complete its range of machines for packaging pharmaceuticals and cosmetics following its basic business policy: that of designing and manufacturing complete and cutting edge lines that seek maximum effectiveness. The Unica monoblock unit is designed around three basic concepts: versatility, ergonomics and maximum efficiency in a limited

space, and all at a very competitive price. The line, in practice - Unica is split-up into two sections - that of the thermoformer and that of the cartoner - each managed by its own stand alone PC. The line is manufactured entirely with balcony structure in total compliance with GMP standards. Outstanding accessibility and ergonomic stations and maximum

SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS Fall 2010 will see the completion of the expansion of Marchesini Group’s logistics facility, adjacent to its headquarters (work began last July). The estimated investment is circa 6,500,000 euro and will result in the creation of a structure of more than 3,500 m2, designed by the architect Stefano Visinelli; the initiative is part of a strategic project aimed at effectively focusing the group’s logistical activities. The new building, designed in accordance with the most current criteria of eco-compatibility and sustainability, will also be equipped with a geothermal installation, able to create a comfortable work environment using technology that respects the environment.

visibility of all the units make the line very easy to clean; the attention to aspects that make the monoblock effectively sanitizeable is also found in the vertical wall that totally separates the mechanical zone from the work zone. Significant novelties include the feeding units, which feature two Robovisions, robots with four axes developed entirely by Marchesini Group to pick up products, - syringes or other products - from a belt and to feed them to the thermoformer and also to the cartoner. The thermoformer is able to produce very deep containers for both cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Its most outstanding features include: maximum flexibility, enhanced by the adoption of

robotized solutions; a pitch of 160 mm for an ample maximum forming area; a brushless motor that powers the main drive of the machine with main shaft and cams; quick and easy format changeover, completely PCguided, which is performed without using tools, thanks to quick-release couplings and locking handles: operational speed that reaches 130 cartons/minute. As for the packaging of the containers in cartons, it should be pointed out that Unica enables the operator to load the cartons and the leaflets in a single access area. The product and the cartons are conveyed by special toothed belts, while the cartons are picked up and opened by oscillating arms. ■

Coating machines and tablet presses: a complete range The range of Manesty last generation presses, the Xpress Range, has been a success, in particular the new Xpress 300. It has the removable turret and the air cushion movability, as for the models Xpress 500 and Xpress 700. Also the competitive features of the Xpress are maintained: low costs of maintenance, fast product change over time (with and without turret removal and using conventional tooling), compliance with latest regulations, notably with 21 CFR part 11 in respect of electronic records and signatures. About coating machines Manesty proposes the lab models XL Lab01 e XL Lab 02, providing advanced laboratory coating machines for any need. The “Plug and Play” XL Lab are of very easy use and the quick and easy change of the coating pan makes them a flexible tool for small batch production. Manesty offers also the XLCota range (the new generation of the well known Accellacota). With many changes and improvements to ease of use, CIP and solvent delivery systems the XLCota range encompasses the new functionality oriented M-tec control system technology. Apart from technology, Manesty is working on a very strong commercial strategy: the ’”After Market Unit” is offering a comprehensive range of products both in the supplying of spare parts, and in the refurbishment an upgrade of whole machines. The agent of Manesty in Italy is Rensa, Milan.

Top dispensing - A unique design and full ease of use are the two main assets of Pfeiffer’s Cremosa pump, which convinced Clarins to adopt it for its cleansing milk and toning lotion range. Designed by the company Ing. Erich Pfeiffer - leading supplier of spray and dispensing systems for the perfumery and cosmetics industry (Radolfzell, D) - the elegant Cremosa pump is ideal for top-of-the-range cosmetic products, thus adding another prestigious reference to the company’s range.

Liquidi edibili

Leaving a mark CUSTOMER IN MIND Exciting new coding solutions and direct decoration of food products, new high resolution large character printing systems, an R&D department in which engineering, hardware, software and chemistry are integrated to achieve excellence. Zanasi explains the recipe for a concern that is not daunted by the crisis. S.L., G.I.

A specialist in the printing and coding sector, Zanasi Srl has always pursued technological innovation as an element of distinction, setting aside large investments for this purpose. Proof of this is the concern’s latest creation in the field of inks, or rather liquids for printing, which at the

moment of this interview has still not begun to be marketed. «This is not one of the usual inks for use with food products - explains the concern’s president Gianni Zanasi - but an edible liquid, perfectly safe to eat, which enables printing in high definition directly onto food products. We have thus

Intenso, inoltre, l’impegno dell’azienda

The new liquids for inkjet printing are based on completely natural plant-based ingredients, dissolved in water and/or alcohol, and while today the monochromatic version has already been perfected, Zanasi is experimenting with products for quadrichromy, which it expects to market in the near future. «The printing system, which in Italy we are the only ones to possess further emphasizes Zanasi - is of high definition drop on demand type and presents a series of

hardware and software characteristics designed to maximize advantages: 12 inch color touchscreen display with DotNet software - the latest Microsoft product for industrial applications; 4 inch stainless steel printing head, with 50 picoliter drop, obtaining superior definition and containing costs; 3 year guarantee».

Speaking of inkjet printing machines, in terms of deflected bead technology in general, it appears in its basic principles to now be consolidated, although there is no lack of improvements in terms of hardware and software and, most importantly, inks, which

«The most interesting prospects however - considers again Gianni Zanasi - lie in the field of large character and high definition drop on demand for printing on secondary packaging, but also - why not - on fabrics, wood and plastic materials in general». Furthermore, the Emilian concern’s commitment to integration, both of the machines and of the management systems, between printers and packaging lines, which has always distinguished it, is also highly active. In this field Zanasi has recently developed a handling system, conceived and constructed for the first time in house. «It is - explains

the president - a traveling lift to be installed after the thermoformers, which moving perpendicular to the progress of the machine, raise the product in order to enable coding operations as the product advances. Thanks to a consistent software and hardware management of lift and printer, applications without equivalents are thus reached, with considerable advantages in terms of simplification of use, not to mention assistance, since the system is provided by a single supplier».

A

MATTER OF KNOWHOW

With the above an important point is touched on: specific sector knowhow as well as that of

Born in Italy in 1978 (and to this day based in Sassuolo, Modena), the company has managed over the years to compete globally, guaranteeing customized applications, rational integration of its equipment into the user’s packaging lines and a first rate assistance service. integration between skills in the mechanical, electronic and chemical fields, necessary to providing effective responses to users’ requirements. «One of the strongpoints that have enabled us to grow in recent years - states the entrepreneur - is the very fact that we produce systems, and so possess all the knowledge necessary to providing solutions. Zanasi systems users, indeed, know that they can count on flexible and quality products, and on a direct relationship with a supplier that is not simply a retailer, but can provide, without losing time, the skills necessary for solving every type of problem». But that’s not all. «It’s no

coincidence that 60% of the installations that we sell in Italy are highly customized and integrated via software with the user’s other machines. Also in absolute terms, we have created many unique and significant applications, such as the latest in our Naples and Milan branches. This is where a first rate engineering department comes into play: the coder itself is a relatively simple object but also an “intelligent” machine to interface with others and manage as one element of a more complex system. And that is what the market, and the Italian one in particular, demands that we know how to do». With this type of approach to the market, and the technical and

management skills involved, Zanasi has confronted the current economic crisis without shock or dread. «We too have experienced a slowdown, but, honestly, we can’t complain about how things are going for us. In addition to being able to count on the solidity of outlet sectors such as food & beverage and pharmaceuticals, we have been fortunate enough to treat a product type that finds ever more new applications and new users. Thus, what we have lost since the end of 2008 in areas where our presence is consolidated, we recovered thanks to a growing penetration into new markets on the global level». In other words, while old Europe continued to suffer, interesting prospects continued to materialize

in China, Brazil, Nigeria… «In the Far East in particular, our commercial commitment has yielded ample fruits, confirming the validity of a policy of outlet diversification by geographic area that has enabled us to get this far in good health. Supported first of all by the fact, natural but not a given, that our product range is particularly wide and complete, enabling us to respond to even the most diverse demands». And the future? Our search for new solid ground, that is the conquest of more quotas in outlet sectors that are numerically more consistent and structurally less fragile. As illustrated by our already confirmed participation in the next Pharmintech, scheduled for ■ Bologna in May 2010.

Hands on checking

Good to trust, better to check LABELS AND CODES When the teller is unable to scan a product’s code it’s too late… Indicod-Ecr has activated a checking service which prevents undesirable decoding problems at exit from the POP. 1.2% of products passed through the scanner by tellers at the supermarket experience problems in scanning. In most cases (55%), the cause is damaged or misprinted labels, which require human intervention and often compromise the success of the purchase; in hypermarkets, for example, where cashier involvement or interaction with other personnel at the POP is more frequent, the percentage of purchases that are given up increases, passing from 0.7% to an

average of 1.7%. That is what emerges from a study conducted in 2007 by Indicod-Ecr in collaboration with IRI Infoscan (software, data and market analysis). It’s natural, then, that the non-profit organization - made up of industrial and commercial broadscale consumption concerns with the primary objective of facilitating relations between business and consumers - has taken on the problem. In this case, providing a

concrete aid to concerns in order to avoid such errors: a service that checks the readability of labels and barcodes on any product configuration (consumer unit, packaging, pallet) as well as conformity to specific GS1 practices.

PROTECTING

acceptance or rejection. In practice, on the one hand this enables whoever prints the code onto the products to measure its characteristics and use relative feedback to control the process; on the other, to predict the probable scanning performance of each symbol.

QUALITY

Why control - The main purpose of a barcode is that of “carrying” data from the place of origin to that in which they are received and processed. Its verification, therefore, is proposed as an aid to quality control, in order to guarantee that the code can be correctly read throughout the entire supply chain. Furthermore, control operations help the symbol’s producer and receiver to jointly define the level of

How it works - Generally speaking, only a sample of symbols in each lot or production cycle undergoes checking, also because the quality of code generation processes is generally good. The sampling criteria are defined by the statistics used by Indicod-Ecr in quality control procedures. In practice, what is measured is how close a code comes to “perfection” both in terms of specifics related to its symbology type and in terms of a

tuare letture corrette lungo l’intera supply chain.

series of attributes connected to printing or scanning. A ranking is then made of the qualities corresponding to the symbol’s most likely scanning applications. Of course, checking is done only after the symbol has been produced and thus cannot be used to improve the checked symbol, but only later ones. The alternative - It is also possible to obtain a perfectly acceptable production level using representative printing tests of expected production conditions, using specific test models or bar gain gauges, particularly in the case of symbols produced by film master. These tests enable evaluating the effects of printing processes and

symbol reproduction, that is bar gain variation and the interval within which it can vary; thus can the corrections to be made in the film master be ascertained. This approach is clearly illustrated in the specific GS1 practices manual, but it can in any case be useful to use a checker to evaluate the test results and, in some cases, to also conduct testing on film masters in accordance with ISO/IEC 15421 regulations. Checker or scanner? - The checker is an instrument created to measure symbols in a coherent and repeatable way and in order to predict their performance under given circumstances. It must be calibrated before use and controlled at regular intervals to

ensure survey consistency. The barcode scanner is different, limited to decoding the sequence of bars and spaces in order to recover encoded data, without measuring the parameters that influence decoding methods. The reason why a scanner cannot be used to control legibility is that no two are the same: the optics used vary considerably according to whether it be a pen or contact scanner, CCD devices, scanner gun, omnidirectional scanner…; moreover scanners can be found at different points along the supply chain and it is thus inevitable that there be differences in scanning between the various equipment types. It should also be considered that, in order to optimize the scanners’

performance, some functions are inserted into the algorithms that help decode even poor quality symbols. What results is that a device will not provide any indication as to whether a symbol will be correctly scanned by another device and can at best be used only to control the data contained. The checker, on the other hand, is based on a standard decoding algorithm, used as a reference and accepted as an integral part of the symbology specifics, not to mention the optical response calibration. These two technical improvements enable obtaining coherent and objective qualitative evaluations, regardless of the scanner type used in the application. Who checking benefits - Anyone

who uses barcodes and wishes to determine their effectiveness is a potential beneficiary of the checking process: those who print symbols (i.e. packaging converters and manufacturers of consumption goods that adopt an on demand printing system) are interested in guaranteeing quality and controlling the printing process; the owners of trademarks, onto whose products the code is applied, can make sure that their customers (retailers) accept the symbols; the latter in their turn can make sure that the symbols function correctly in their own systems and those who handle the goods in the intermediary phases of the supply chains have the same interest. But it is mainly those who “generate” the barcodes (usually the

owner of the trademark which is encoded) that need to ensure that the code meets the quality requirements of the entire supply chain.

THE

ADVANTAGES OF PRECISION

A barcode that ensures the performance expected throughout the supply chain prevents every possible problem in relations between suppliers and customers. The producers of the symbols, then, further benefit since they are able to use the symbol verification data to monitor their own process and calibrate devices and their management so as to obtain optimal quality. In their turn, packaging designers can use the results of checking to make sure that the symbol’s

Labeling & Coding

dimensions, position and color do not pose problems for use. Finally, the receivers of products with checked barcodes benefit in their turn since those codes will not cause scanning problems in their handling and supply control systems, as well as in the point of use. The advantages of a correct, legible and checked barcode are thus, in brief: • faster inflow of products onto the market; • improved quality of barcodes present on the market; • errors correction during processing, thus preventing in line printing of incorrect codes; • reduction of penalties, blacklists or products delisted by distributors; • no need of reprinting the code, an operation which entails product recalls, waste of packaging material, reprinting costs, with the further consequence of slowing the product’s time to market; • reduction of any forfeited sales due to scanning problems; • certainty that the barcode is read in all phases of the supply chain and by all scanner types; • accurate management of stocks in realtime; • accuracy of information in processes related to orders, picking, shipping, delivery, invoicing, and of information on the POP; • a correct code does not need to be typed in manually, and consequently, any errors, delays, lines at the cash register and wasted time are avoided. ■

i codici a barre verificati ne beneficia a sua volta, poiché quei codici non causeranno problemi di lettura ai suoi sistemi di movimentazione e di controllo delle scorte, oltre che nel punto di utilizzo. I vantaggi di un codice a barre corretto, leggibile e verificato sono dunque, in sintesi: • immissione più veloce dei prodotti sul mercato; • migliore qualità dei codici presenti sul mercato; • correzione degli errori durante la lavorazione, evitando così la stampa in linea di codici errati; • riduzione di penalità, blacklist o prodotti “delistati” da parte dei distributori; • nessun bisogno di ristampare il codice, operazione che porterebbe a richiami del prodotto, sprechi di materiale da imballaggio, costi di ristampa, con l’ulteriore conseguenza di rallentare il time to market del prodotto;

I protagonisti, in breve

The protagonists, in brief

• Viappiani Printing Srl is a historic concern in Italy’s label printing sector. It boasts a constantly updated research and development center and state-of-the-art machinery (invested in with 6 million euro in 2007 alone). Their IML production is destined for an array of sectors: food, detergents, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, pet food, technical articles, toys etc. It recently patented technology that enables integrating removable control coupons with IML. • Founded as a precision mechanics workshop for the construction of high performance moulds, Abate Basilio has specialized in moulds for packaging, thin wall containers and IML technology and boasts an engineering development division to optimize injection, cooling and piece extraction phases. • Affiliated with the Star Seiki Co. group, Star Automation designs and builds equipment for the manipulation of injection moulded plastic products, and is specialized in the production of special automations. • Sacmi, finally, has operated in this project through its company Oima (Asolo, TV), specialized in the creation of presses for high productivity, high precision and reduced energy consumption packaging.

An integrated system, designed to produce plastic containers equipped with in mould labels, was developed and presented at the Viappiani facility. Four concerns are involved in the project, with one objective: validating a technology - that of in mould - with high creative and functional potential.

for producing thin wall plastic containers equipped with in mould labels: Viappiani Printing brought, of course, its own knowhow in label technology, Abate Basilio & C (Calcinato, BS) supplied the mould, Sacmi (Imola, BO) created the injection press for fast moulding, while the label and container manipulation system was entrusted to Star Europe Automation (Caselle di S.M. di Sala, VE). All elements at play meet the requests emerging among IML users: high production speed, reliability and efficiency,

flexibility in treating different formats. Live demonstration - During the course of the event it was possible to see live the complete production cycle of thin wall polypropylene covers, from the raw material to the injection moulding with in mould labeling, and creation of the labels. In the Viappiani facility an island was in fact set up in which a 220 t Sacmi press was equipped with a double cavity mould and a Star Europe lateral entry 7S Flex IML,

with devices for laying the labels into the mould and picking and depositing onto the conveyor belt of the finished product. In addition to that of polypropylene labels, used during the course of the demonstration, Viappiani took the opportunity to offer testimony on the production of the many types of plastic, paper and board labels which make up its selection. The system as a whole thus guarantees optimal performance as well as respect for environmental regulations and energy savings,

and represents an innovative proposal in a field where the potential for development is still high. The adoption of in mould labels in packaging indeed enables combining functionality and creativity, taking advantage of the product’s own characteristics: the label can be a single component, and thus easily recyclable, but also transparent, lending itself to multiple applications and detachable coupons on the ■ container itself.

THE VOICE OF ITALIAN PACKAGING

THE VOICE OF ITALIAN PACKAGING

THE VOICE OF ITALIAN PACKAGING

the voice of italian packaging

ItaliaImballaggio is an independent magazine, published by Edizioni Dativo Srl, Milan, whose aim is to give voice to the Italian packaging industry in as capable and professional way as possible, while rejecting a conformism that all too often confuses information with advertising. The magazine is divided up into five basic sections - covering marketing and design, statistics and sector trends, management, environment and legislation and lastly, technological and product innovation - all of which including indepth features and news in brief. ItaliaImballaggio has another feature that has allowed it to stand out right from the outset: its graphics, painstaking in the way information is presented and in the visual impact, making the magazine more pleasurable to read and easier to consult. The cover, designed by well-known as well as up-and-coming packaging designers, communications experts, and - starting from 1999 - by worldwide well known artists ably represents the philosophy and the identity of the magazine.

Ne beneficiano produttori e OEM, spinti a ottimizzare in modo radicale macchine e processi.

Research and development

Integrated competency A LABORATORY FOR OEMs Rockwell Automation’s Competency Centre registers the market’s approval and relaunches on consulting activities that open the door to integrated automation. Manufacturers and OEMs stand to benefit, inspired to radically optimize machines and processes. Firsthand testimoni al from a distinguished user. E.P.

There was something pleasant in the air last July 14th in Calderara di Reno, outside Bologna, where Rockwell Automation’s Competency Centre is based. And for the times, that in itself is newsworthy. The reason is mostly the enthusiasm and pride of the managers of this consulting facility and testing that the electronics multinational unveiled, in September 2005, in the heart of packaging valley:

an area densely populated with manufacturers and integrators of machines and systems destined for packaging, but also countless other sectors. The structure, which functions alongside an analogous one in Hamburg, has today become a feather in its cap for Rockwell, which, among Italy’s PMIs, has “found” one of its primary outlet areas. Widespread optimism at CT Pack

group’s headquarters (Fossalta, FE) as well, an assiduous patron of the competency center and a testimonial of the important role that collaboration with such a well-equipped supplier plays in a Research & Development process. During the course of the “Emilian” day, put briefly, the characteristically Italian vocation for custom product/service was put forth as a competitive lever without equals that, in cascade, brings benefits to the automation supplier, the machine manufacturer/integrator and the end user.

KEYWORD: OPTIMIZE The meaning and reasons of the growing success of the Bolognese Competency Center - emphasize in their respective contributions Boe Boesen, EMEA general director of

Rockwell solutions for OEMs, and the manager of the Italian facility, Fabrizio Scovenna - originate in the double problem that Italian OEMs must face: the pressure of the economic crisis and the growing knowhow of competitors in emerging markets. In this situation, considers Scovenna, Rockwell believes that it can offer its customers that “extra advantage” that can only be born from a close collaboration in which customer and supplier work as partners towards strategic objectives. The Competency Center is thus proposed as a complete R&D laboratory, where new solutions can be discovered and developed and where «we don’t stop at testing hardware, but verify entire project plans, experiences, we could say, considering the maximum optimization

of functions and processes». «Along with our equipment, always up-to-date in accordance with technological advances, what is shared is first of all intelligence, both artificial and human», explains Boesen. «The Bologna center develops advanced robotic and mechatronic solutions, explores the

potential of software in the creation of integrated solutions that are more rational and economical… Last but not least, it responds to the indispensable need for constant updating and enables facing issues as a team, helping to recognize the individual sectors as parts of a whole, changing prospects and “opening minds”».

It’s logical, then, that from the words of the Rockwell technicians most involved in customer relations emerges a pride in conducting, and in knowing that one conducts, important work. The spokesperson of this sentiment, supported by the enthusiasm of a young and passionate staff, is the senior engineer of the Speed & Position department, Tommaso Fochi, who celebrates the centrality of Bologna in Italy’s machine sector and emphasizes how “his” facility has become a point of reference for the whole of southern Europe, in addition to a site of lively seminars and training courses for Rockwell technicians from all countries of the wise old world.

When hearing him speak, the centrality of human resources loses the rigidity of abstract formulas to come to life in the form of commitment of people who, by goal and by disposition, work alongside customers, helping them to develop projects. A thrilling task that enables one to “truly accomplish” research and development, often together with the best concerns of each sector (at times also major users, and even with the support of universities), with their skills and vision for the future. In Bologna they find highly specialized personnel and demo racks, walls equipped with the various systems necessary for conducting control simulations of motion, complex mechatronics, integrated architecture,

Automation & Controls Try it out and choose The Rockwell’s Bologna OEM Center is structured to develop a preliminary analysis of the needs of each producer, subsequently followed as need be by thematic studies, authentic simulations, axial control tests and checks on performance. In particular, under the principle “try it out and choose” all the tests and simulations enable builders to ponder their choices in the design stage. In constant contact with the other European Competency Centers and with the various product divisions, Rockwell’s technicians hence work together with their customers to enable the correct scaling and preparation of the various project elements (this also to simplify component testing). The correct choice of motion control components in fact

constitutes a crucial (and particularly costly) part of machine design. The Rockwell centre also helps in simulating work scenarios and, rather than proposing field tests that may come too late in the day, pre-empts solutions to possible machine failings, tackling questions such as how long it takes for the motor to shut down; how long the device being fed can carry on in this instance; the accuracy of registration in the event of a rapid machine speed change. And you can also define whether a given servodrive system will work satisfactorily in conditions of a faltering power supply or, more in general, what the overall machine performance would be. As far as the correct tooling up of the machine is concerned something that other things “makes the difference” in the startup phase - computer testing programs and models are used that help calibrate performance to ones actual requirements. In this phase Rockwell consultants help to define the parameters best befitting each project and to use the by no means simple “proportional - integral - derivative” (PID) control programs, devising control systems for handling complex loads that entail play and resonances. Lastly, after having defined the optimum configuration and settings for the devices and after having tried them out on the Center simulators, Rockwell’s experts can also be involved in the devising of the best possible programming of the system in function of its final use.

communication networks, safety applications, robotics (on scara and delta robots)… «We also perform - Fochi points out integrations of motion analyzers with the 3D Solidworks modeling program, which enables us to pass from measuring components to integrating them, calibrating the electronics according to certain and precise data and testing the behavior of the whole

system before creating a prototype of the machine, with advantages that are easy to imagine». «But since the machines “produce” data, these then need to be integrated and interpreted in order to achieve flexibility of functions as well as savings in time, costs and materials» Pasquale Paolone, EMEA manager in the Information Solutions Consulting area, reminds us. «Our job is to get

the most out of these data, facilitating both integration of individual machines into the production lines and constant monitoring of the functional parameters. We have at our disposal highly advanced products, such as the Factory Talk platform for storage, and for analysis, Vantage Point: today we can perform information gathering directly from the PLC of the individual machine, at speeds that were previously unthinkable. And without risk of invading reserved or “sensitive” areas».

EXCELLENT COLLABORATIONS A testimonial of the results achieved thanks to a collaboration with the Competency Centre can be provided by Bruno Alberti, HW & SW Department Manager of CT Pack*, a company that has established itself on

the international scene as a manufacturer of complete lines and special installations. “It’s our distinguishing feature and also our main point of satisfaction. We have specialized in solving difficult problems and, indeed, even at this difficult point in time we find success in the market”. That doesn’t mean that certain projects haven’t represented veritable milestones, opening prospects never dreamed of before. Such as the horizontal multipack feed, created in 2006 for one of the food sector’s most important brands, with accumulation of 8-12 rows that work in an integrated manner but also completely independently, so as to adapt as necessary to diverse production requirements. In order to obtain this result, up to 12

PLCs were installed on the same machine, integrated - by inspired intuition - via Ethernet: «In this explains Alberti - Rockwell was one step ahead and offered an important contribution in the development of a system that could work just as the customer wanted, who was so happy that four more were installed». This same job was done with the involvement of all participants in a preliminary study (a procedure at the time considered almost “pioneering”), which also saw the help of the University of Carrara and its advanced algorithms, followed by a feasibility study, testing, and finally, the implementation of components on the actual machine. «Our collaboration with Rockwell Automation - asserts the manager began on the back burner, to only

setup and network connection are done through Ethernet interface. Programming can also be done through fieldbus interface. The PCs integrated for PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT and Ethernet have Ethernet interfaces with multiple connectors and switch function, which enable creating a “Daisy Chain” topology requiring no heavy economic investment or extra hardware. The operating system used is Windows CE. The absence of a video card makes it possible to access the desktop in only a virtual mode, through the network. System configuration and PLC functions programming are done

with TwinCAT automation software. The CX8000 series also features an integrated capacitive continuity unit (with one second retention time), useful for saving important data in case of main power failure, without the use of a buffer battery. Finally, thanks to the 32 bit ARM processor, the CX8000 embedded PC has a compact design and contained energy consumption. Its openness to different interfaces (EtherCAT, I/O terminals, TwinCAT automation software with extensive PLC libraries) makes the CX8000 an efficient and highly flexible solution. ■

Automation & Controls A small high performance motor

Adding to its range of motors already available, maxon motor (Italian branch in Arese, MI) launches RE50, a 200 W motor of extremely contained dimensions. It shows unprecedented results in terms of lifespan, load capacity and robustness, which is associated with a good ratio between mechanical bulk and performance. The heart of the RE50 is (like all the company’s mechanical switching motors) its ironless rotor, which, given its inertia characteristics, enables obtaining high dynamic performances. The combination of a bipolar permanent neodymium magnet and cuttingedge winding (developed by the company) enables very high torque and remarkable speed. The system has a diameter of 50 x 108 mm and is available in four versions of standard winding; it can reach a maximum nominal torque of 0.38 Nm, a nominal speed of 2800-5700 min-1 and a yield exceeding 90%. The pre-loaded ball bearings contribute to its quiet functioning with limited vibrations and offer, together with the graphite brushes, the recipe for a long lifespan. Destination - Its nominal tension (24…70 VDC) and high power density make RE50 suitable for battery applications, such as electrical vehicles, logistical transport devices, mobile systems, robots etc… Maxon modular system provides planetary reducers, Encoders and drives suitable for any application. Analogously, the new motor can be adapted to a variety of applications in the fields of automation, mechanical engineering and medical technology, and a version with optional brakes, with protection against dust and water is currently in the development phase.

Drive with integrated positioner

The CRK series of 5-phase stepping units with 24VDC power, designed and built by Oriental Motor Japan, is enhanced with a new version of drive with integrated positioner. The range, which stands out for ultracompact dimensions, now includes 32 variants of motors, gearmotors and drives. The new unit enables two control types, with RS485 or I/O; in the second case it is possible to command, using an external logic controller, one or more of the 63 program functions in single or sequential mode. The function parameters can be written within the positioner with the OPX control module (optional) or, alternately, using the RS485 communication. All positioning can be set in absolute or incremental mode. On the other hand, there are three driver options, making the system particularly flexible and therefore adaptable to many different applications. The first manages all ratios, speeds, accelerations and countless other functions previously configured in the positioned and that can be recalled using a 6 bit logic. The second, in speed control mode, enables creating different single or sequential speed profiles, according to the values set in the motion profiles, which can also be selected with 6 bit logic. The last, but not the least important, makes it possible to return to the home point with the use of reference sensors. As for the motor’s piloting, the drive uses microstep technology with resolution up to 1/250mo step and enables using the new “smooth” function, which automatically divides the step at low speeds, with no increase in the number of incoming piloting impulses or variations in preset speeds or distances. The result is a smooth and vibration free motion, with an extremely low level of noise. Other important functions are manual self-learning of desired positions and the possibility of connecting to an encoder to compare the impulses generated by the positioning of the motor with those of incoming piloting to the driver.

Automation & Controls From rack to profibus node…

Da rack a nodo profibus…

The new IM306 DP Slave card developed by Vipa Italia (San Zeno Naviglio, BS) is dedicated to the old S5 115135 systems. It’s a Profibus slave card to replace the CPU S5 (or IM expansion card), transforming the wired Rack S5 into a Profibus node connected to a Master Profibus and CPU in Step®7 by Siemens. Thus a useful and economical update is obtained, enabling savings in wiring costs: the card, in fact, enables managing a series of Racks of old wired S5 115-135 PLCs with Siemens’ most current Step®7 software. The passage to Profibus DP makes easy expandability of the application with other nodes possible, or a gradual passage to new IO blocks. The IM306 DP Slave is therefore ideal for quick and economical revamping and is supplied with GSD files for all digital and analog S5 modules. The use of this CPU is recommended with SPEED7® technology with Master Profibus types 3152AG12, 315-4NE12 or 317.

The miniTwin safety barrier, presented by Sick, introduces an important innovation: emitter and receiver are contained in the same case. In the spirit of standardization and containing costs.

One barrier, one case With miniTwin, Sick (Vimodrone, MI) inaugurates the new direction of safety barriers: for the first time, in fact, emitter and receiver are found in a single miniaturized case. Another important new feature is the complete equivalence between the stand alone and host/guest versions, while, in terms of construction, miniTwin enables monitoring with minimal safety distances and no blind spots (even with systems in cascade for controlling multiple sides of the machine). Designed for situations in which risk analysis requires the highest possible level of protection, such as for example Performance Level pl “e” according to EN ISO 13849-1

regulation (or, alternately, SIL3 according to IEC 61508 or EN 62061 regulations), miniTwin offers resolutions of 14 mm, 24 mm and 34 mm, even in applications controlling multiple sides. The high resolution and quick response times enable operating at short safety distance, when necessary, in order to optimize processes. The height of the protection field ranges from 120 to 1200 mm, range from 0 to 4 m. The size of the case guarantees optimal adaptability of the protection field to different machinery applications. Unity and standardization - Even though it’s invisible from the outside,

the design of miniTwin’s sensor has been completely revamped. There’s no point in distinguishing between emitter and receiver since the two elements are contained in the same barrier: lying symmetrically inside a single case and separated in the middle by a synchronization beam. The connection device (5-pin M12 connector) is attached to the back of the barrier. But the added value of miniTwin also derives from the possibility of connecting different devices in cascade. To define which barrier functions as host and which as guest, since the two versions are identical, a connection with one or two exit cables is indeed used. These characteristics offer machine manufacturers a high level of standardization: the number of codes to administer, and the corresponding storage costs, are therefore considerably reduced.

Plug&play and automatic configuration - miniTwin’s plug&play level has no equals thanks to the development of monitoring solutions designed to best adapt to different application requirements. First of all the connection: it is done through standard cables and a 5pin M12 connector and offers all the functions of external device monitoring (EDM) and Reset. Then configuration, which is done during the startup phase, automatically in the case of EDM and with the push of a button for Reset. The line of LED indicators all along the system, finally, is another important characteristic: it indeed serves as an aid for alignment, as a status indicator and as a diagnosis device, and generates a simple visual delineation of the protection field on both sides of the pair of ■ sensors.

The photoelectric cylindrical sensors are available with fixed sensing distance (50 mm, 100 mm), focused sensing distance (12 mm, 25 mm) and adjustable sensing distance (30…130 mm), enabling satisfaction of the diverse application requirements. Versions with axial optics (FA - SS - MS - MV) or with radial optic (MP - MQ) and with DC or AD power are also available. All models are completely fulfilled of resin so they can bear, without problems, the vibrations often present on woodworking machines. In the case of particularly reduced spaces, MD proposes FE series cubic compact miniaturized models, with sensing distance up to 500mm. To reach greater distances, or when a relay exit is needed, FG and/or RX series sensors can be used, with sensing distance up to 1 m. All background suppression sensors are suitable for any application in which objects of different colors need to be detected with precision on a background or over a conveyor belt.

Transport with control The new MagneMover™ Lite system proposed by Servotecnica (Nova Milanese, MB) is based on the tested QuickStick LSM technology (synchronous linear motor). Thanks to a wide range of components for modular tracks, it is possible to obtain various transport solutions for loads of 2 kg or less; the combination of prefabricated blocks enables, in practice, infinite configurations. Suitable for applications in which cleanliness and easy washing (IP65) are indispensable, the system also completely resolves issues relating to traceability: indeed, the carts are monitored individually, and their position is thus detectable at all times with millimetric precison. MagneMover™ Lite is therefore an extremely versatile transport solution with applications in many industrial sectors (pharmaceuticals, laboratory automation, sterile/aseptic filling, packaging, production of medical equipment, monitoring of electronic components, food and beverage sector).

The anthropomorphous robot Flexrobot, created by TMG Impianti (S. Martino di Lupari, PD) for a modular open structure, is designed in such as way as to optimize the fast movements from one place to another typical of palletization operations. Combined with one or two pre-forming machines to receive, space out and layer the incoming products according to the set program, Flexrobot enables handling different product lines with different pallets at the same time. It is equipped with four electrically powered handling axes with integrated control device, a long articulated arm for a wider operation field and shorter cycle times for overall higher performances. The layer handling basket is composed of an accumulation platform with idle rolls with central opening as to release the layer, complete with self-regulating perimetrical pressers for perfectly pressing the layer once it is released by the pallet. The picking system enables processing a wide variety of products, such as pallets and crates, with different sizes, and guaranteeing remarkably fast and flexible changeovers. This system, in addition to the use of state-ofthe-art materials, guarantees lightness and sturdiness to the overall structure. The use of long lasting components reduces maintenance requirements. Programming is eased by an operator board with simplified operational functions for an overall intuitive control of all movements, thus allowing rapid adjustments to new production requirements. The Venetian concern has earned a reputation in the market with a selection qualified by anthropomorphous robots and corresponding alignment systems, as well as carton erectors, casepackers, carton sealers, palletizers and depalletizers, that is to say all things related to end of line packaging processes automation, a field in which the concern supplies a vast array of turnkey solutions.

How green is the future of packaging? GREEN CONVERTING EskoArtwork creates solutions that reduce the environmental impact of packaging production and becomes part of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.

Being green is trendy and chic? No doubt about it. But environmental sustainability is no longer simply a discussion topic to be found in magazines, websites, TV or radio shows. The interest for this problem has been created by a movement of widespread ideas, from a real interest for a healthier life and resource saving (and consequently) saving money. Even in the field of packaging production environmental sustainability has become a priority, demanded on

several levels and jointly by governments, big brands, retailers, packaging printers and consumers. Each actor of the packaging production chain is hence called upon to play a proactive role, in the effort to make our planet “greener”. To this purpose, EskoArtwork provides integrated hardware and software solutions that contribute to the creation of ecocompatible jobs and production processes. EskoArtwork has become part of the Sustainable Packaging Coaltion - SPC

Packaging in a “from cradle to cradle” lifecycle.

(www.sustainablepackaging.org), a GreenBlue project. SPC is an industrial workgroup inspired by the “from the cradle to the cradle” principle, and committed to turning packaging into a system that encourages economic prosperity and a sustainable flow of materials. With the intent of helping its own customers reach all the targets of environmental sustainability in designing and producing packaging, EskoArtwork wishes to support the GMPs, contributing actively to short term SPC projects for a sustainable future of industrial packaging. The objective can be achieved fielding better creative design methods, a careful choice of materials, and the use of applications aimed at reducing or avoiding errors. Following GMPs, packaging design and production can be carried out minimising waste,

reducing shipment costs and increasing efficiency or creating - as an alternative - more ecological packaging.

FROM THE CRADLE TO THE CRADLE Rather than design packaging conceived as “from the cradle to the grave”, that is thrown into landfills at the end of their lifecycle, the concept “from the cradle to the cradle” aims at developing packaging so that the waste to be eliminated goes back to being “nutrient”: The solutions include packaging that decomposes in the ground after use (“biological nutrients”) or that return to being reusable raw materials or material for recycling leading once again to high quality packaging (“technical nutrients”). The key element of this concept is that eco-sustainable design can generate

profit (the sustainability of packaging derives from an iteractive process, in which various actors of the packaging production chain move together to systematically improve the environmental, social and economic impact of each new packaging item). As well as the standards dictated by trade and industry for sustainable packaging, EskoArtwork is trying to better understand and to act proactively in terms of the most important standards in force at local and national level. The “from the cradle to the cradle” concept recognises the different phases in the lifecycle of the packaged goods, from the processing of the raw materials up to the recovery of the product and its processing after use. Design, preproduction and production of packaging play a fundamental role in this sense. And in each of these

phases EskoArtwork’s solutions help the customer to reduce the environmental impact of their own activity, sensitising the environmental conscience of other partners involved in the production chain.

“SUSTAINABLE” DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

EskoArtwork’s solutions for ecosustainable packaging design and manufacture are numerous. • In ArtiosCAD packaging design, Studio and Studio Toolkits provide tools needed to guarantee that packaging is structurally and graphically designed with an economic use of materials. ArtiosCAD software - and its link to palletisation software - can be used to reduce packaging to an optimum size, helping to reduce the weight of the same and make the logistics process

more efficient from the logistics process to the factory to retail selling. • The visual prototypes created by Visualiser of packaging projects reduce the number of physical prototypes needed during the design process. These samples actually made tend to have a great environmental impact, because they consume materials and production resources. On top of that, the possibility of realistically displaying the designed object on video optimises the use of materials, inks, finishes and special lacquers. • From pre-production to sampling, EskoArtwork offers a variety of tools for automating the processes that enable the saving of time and material, as well as reducing the cause of errors, waste, and use of money - making the workflow more streamlined, efficient and effective. For example, Plato and

PowerStepper are used for producing the automatic layouts of machine sheets for working board, corrugate, labels, including sophisticated fittings so as to maximize the number of elements on one single sheet. Thus material waste is reduced to a minimum. • BackStage, Nexus and Odystar automate the most banal and repetitive activities, avoiding costly human errors, saving on material and time in the packaging production process. • Kaleidoscope and FlexProff/E produce inkjet print proofs with color management, that enable an accurate rating of the way a job will look once printed. The result? Reduced start-up times lead to a lesser waste of ink, material and energy. Contract proofs with precise colors, right from the first time,

mean that there will be no surprises and reprints of a job after the first “print viewing” by the contractor. • Equinox significantly reduces the consumption of material and inks, and improves start-up times, encouraging standardisation on a preset number of inks. Always maintaining the same inks in the machine, a printer can considerably reduce start-up times, saving energy and inks. Equinox guarantees that all the packaging is created in an environment with color management that uses a given set of inks, practically enabling the correct reproduction of any logo. • EskoArtworks offset and flexo print screening technique contributes to a more ecological packaging, because it enables the achievement of the wished for color saturation, with a lesser consumption of inks and energy.

Concentric Screening™ enables high quality offset printing on recycled paper, leading to a reduction in ink consumption og up to 15%. Groovy Screens and PerfectHighlights are flexo screening techniques that help to obtain high quality results using less ink. • The Kongsberg XE; XL and XP digital plotters limit the use of production machines for creating samples and the production of small lots, effectively providing an ecological solution and using only a fraction of the resources demanded by the largest production machines. The Kongsberg i-series, in combination with the new SignUp applicatives that enable the efficient fitting of graphic elements in a display case using the minimum amount of print sheets, is the perfect accompaniment to the largescale flat

inkjet printers, for the immediate creation of posters and salespoint showcases • The EskoArtwork Cyrel Digital Imagers (CDI) for Flexo CtP and the Dupont FAST plates are the perfect ecological alternative to the traditional production technologies based on chemical solvents. The use of digital plates leads directly to a reduced consumption of inks due to a print machine that runs in a more controllable fashion, with less material waste and more rapid start-up times. The most important aspect is that the CDI engraving units consume less than 50% compared to the film based workflow. • On top of that, the Digital Flexo Suite enables the creation of flexo plate production workflows, that have an immediate effect on the reduction of errors and waste, making the best of

production and human resources. A company responsibility Production efficiency does a lot more than save money. It enables less material (inks and substrates) and less energy to be wasted. Furthermore, it helps the brand owner to use less material and this in a more ecological manner. Arjen Maarleveld, Senior Vice Presidente - Products & Solutions at EskoArtwork concludes: «The responses from our customers show that packaging efficiency has a deep effect in reducing the environmental impact of a production activity. Our mission is to provide solutions that help the brand owner, the packaging designers and the producers to lower the environmental, social and economic impact of their activity, and this in all phases of the packaging ■ lifecycle».

ter (che cattura l’immagine intera). I vantaggi?

Components & Other equipment Insulated hotmelt guns

One year after its introduction to the market the range of Diamond hotmelt guns is substantially expanded: to the now famous SX1N Diamond single module gun at more than 120 cycles per second, Robatech (Italian branch in Cesena, FC) adds a complete range of models able to meet a vast array of application requirements. The concern has made guns - still thermally isolated - with multiple modules (2-8 spray elements, including with independent activation), guns with zero cavity modules (self-cleaning and extremely precise), waterproof versions, suitable for installation on lines subject to frequent washing operations and special models designed according to customer specifics, including with interaxis between modules up to 150 mm. Diamond insulated guns are in extremely high demand - as Robatech representatives inform us - among customers that use hotmelt equipment supplied by other concerns. In order to enable these companies as well to benefit from the many advantages deriving from the use of Diamond technology, without having to acquire an entire hotmelt system, Robatech has created the same guns - making a big exception - in a version compatible with other standards. Reasons for success - We remind readers that the most innovative characteristics of Diamond guns are their total insulation, an external temperature that never exceeds 80° (with clear advantages for operator safety), a drastic reduction in energy consumption, decidedly high performance. These are the reasons for success - they point out at Robatech - that has lasted since the launch at Interpack 2008, which can also be attributed to the foresight of those operators of the packaging (and other) sectors that, attentive to production processes management, don’t hesitate to invest in technology, safety and ecology: themes that tie the investments of today to the productivity of tomorrow.

Hinges, handles and plates • The jury of the authoritative Hannover International Design Forum (Germany) awarded the design of the new hinge with covers series CFT (1), developed by Elesa (MB). Completely made in polyamide based technopolymers, reinforced with fibrelass, it reproposes the most classic of hinges with a new design in rounded from. The covers enable the assembly screws to be hidden from view and also enable the personalisation through pad printing of symbols or brands and the use of special colors. The CFT measures 48 mm and is available with holes for countersunk flat, cylindrical or hexagonal screw heads (hole centre distance 31 mm). • Elesa also offers the EBR-SW handle (2) with incorporated electrical switch, typically for machine protective doors. The handle body and the closing caps are in grey-black matt finished technopolymer with incorporated microswitch with

normally open N.A. and normally closed N.C. position. The two red and green leds indicate if the switch is on or off. Assembly thru holes for cylinder headed screws with hexagonal inset are provided. The hole centre distance is 132 mm. The connection output is available in six different executions. • The toothed GN 187 (3) clamping plates are lastly designed for the solid parts assembled with defined angles. The fine toothing of the same (60 teeth per plate) enable the adjustment of the angle up to a minimum of 6°, making the system particularly flexible. The GN 187.1 guide case and the GN 187.2 thrust spring are complementary accessories that facilitate fixing and positioning. Made in nitrided steel, the plates are available with diameters of from 22 to 40 mm and in four standard executions.

and explosion protection systems (In Italy in Milan), introduces the membrane LFEX-V TM, Fire Limiting Explosion Vent - an innovatory device for venting explosions. As opposed to traditional venting systems, that open completely when a preset pressure is reached, guaranteeing a venting of the extra pressure, the PLEX-V TM membrane closes again after the explosion, enabling a shortening of the vent process and reducing the risk of any secondary explosion. In this way, the extinguishing agent introduced in the machine to quench the fire is not diluted by the continuous entering of new fresh air and thus maintains the necessary concentration rate. The system hence is a useful link between passive explosion prevention protection and flame extinction systems.

Safe ultrasonic sealing Reclosable vent membrane Fike, specialist in extra pressure

Hermann Ultraschall, German producer specialised in ultrasonic

sealing, offers complete and modular solutions for beverage cartons, stiff and other types of bags, blisters and beakers, tins and cups, plastic tubes and special applications, with possible integration in already existing machines. High production rates and airtight closures feature in this technology that is also highly effective when the product is in contact with the packaging and when critical products like powders and liquids have to be packed. In the seal area, the ultrasonic energy is in fact accurately dosed in the single points, without heating up the contents or the packaging material. The applications range from pods for coffee machines to salad trays to toothpaste tubes. Ultrasonic sealing requires little maintenance and, compared with other closure systems that demand a constant heating temperature, it generates energy saving of up to and over 25%.

QUALITY CONTROL A new basic model extends the range of X-ray solutions offered by Ishida Europe.

An “inspector” for the pack Ishida Europe has launched a “basic” version of its own successful X-ray inspection system, with the objective of offering companies a sustainable solution for max. control in the packaging phase. The new Ishida IX-EA-2161 has been specifically devised for inspecting products such as packed confectionery, small trays and bags. It acts by way of a powerful X-ray, capable of reaching scan levels above those of conventional metal detectors and of recognising a much broader range of extraneous bodes. At a speed which reaches 60 metres a minute, this system also easily identifies tiny metal particles (0.7 mm in diameter), as well as glass, stone, rubber and plastic.

122 • 9/09

Personalisable - one of the salient characteristics of the Ishida IX-EA2161 is that it can be personalised to individual needs. Once an extraneous body has been located, for example, it is capable of providing an image of the product along with the relative statistics. As well as that, the machine can be set to concentrate the scan on only some parts of the pack - the most important or critical - so that the peripheral areas of a box or the seal areas of a bag are not involved in the inspection process. At the same time a series of “friendly” objects can be excluded from the scan that would otherwise be listed as anomalies, like for example the closure. Friendly - IX-EA also ensures the max ease of functioning thanks to a highly userfriendly touchscreen. Characteristics like the sensitivity of the inspection process can be set by simply pressing a button, while max change rapidity is facilitated by a great number (up to

100) of established settings. Cleaning and maintenance are also facilitated, for example by the fact that the conveyor belt can be removed and replaced without any tools. Lastly, the machine’s sturdy structure that ensures accurate and reliable functioning on the longterm, as well as operator and product safety.

Shaving proof cable carrier The new cable carrying chain developed by igus (in Italy at Robbiate, LC), that ensures a complete protection both from large shavings as well as microparticles is especially for machinetool builders, and all industrial activities that generate a lot of production residue in the form of shavings. Called RX and made in plastic (1), it is completely free of rear ridges, rough apertures or edges: its rounded design and its smooth, rounded outer covering mean that

shavings bounce off without entering or building up. As well as that the hole/pin connection elements and stays are within the same, here also preventing the build-up of residue. Against this, this chain can be easily opened thanks to a special integrated hook on the covering, and has a broad load space (2), with an inner height that can reach 52 mm (enabling a lesser wear of cabling). The RX is well suited for the shorter selfsupporting lengths of machinetools and to applications with a reversible bending radius (RBR), and is also available in version resistant to high temperature. Lastly, a further new feature by igus: lids and bases with geometrically matching closures, that fit into each other preventing the shavings from penetrating inside. Also airtight corresponding to the external tags, they are suited for the E4 modular system.
