Aggiornamenti normativi

Materiali a contatto con gli alimenti NUOVE REGOLE Le normative comunitarie dedicate agli imballaggi per il comparto alimentare. Dal seminario Istituto Italiano Imballaggio, alcune novità interessanti, già approvate o in corso di definizione. Ado Sattanino i come sia cambiato e stia tuttora cambiando il quadro legislativo europeo (ma anche nazionale), si è parlato durante il seminario “Materiali e oggetti a diretto contatto con gli alimenti”, organizzato dall’Istituto Italiano Imballaggio lo scorso 13 dicembre a Milano, appuntamento ormai “classico” giunto alla sua decima edizione.

Al tavolo dei relatori - presieduto da Luciana Gramiccioni (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) - si sono avvicendati Maria Rosaria Milana, Roberta Feliciani, Massimo Denaro, Antonino Maggio (ISS) e il professor Maurizio Boccacci Mariani (Università La Sapienza, Roma).

L’impressione è che, nel corso del 2007, gli interventi del legislatore non siano stati molti. Del resto, il Regolamento 1935/2004 rimane a tutti gli effetti la nor-

ma di riferimento per “i materiali e gli oggetti destinati a venire a contatto con i prodotti alimentari”.

Da Bruxelles, tuttavia, si segnalano alcuni aggiornamenti importanti: il quarto e quinto emendamento alla Direttiva 72/2002 sulle materie plastiche, il Regolamento 2023/2006 sulle buone pratiche di fabbricazione e il Regolamento 372/2007 sui limiti di migrazione dell’ESBO. Anche a Roma, a livello nazionale, sono stati fatti due passi in avanti, con i Decreti Ministeriali 217 del 25/9/2007 e 76 del 18/4/2007 che fanno chiarezza, rispettivamente, nell’ambito della carta e cartone e dell’alluminio a contatto con gli alimenti.

Ma andiamo con ordine, cercando di riassumere i quadri normativi di riferimento, prima di segnalare le modifiche,

How European (and Italian) legislation has changed and is still changing was discussed during the seminar entitled “Materials and objects in direct contact with food”, organised by Istituto Italiano Imballaggio on the 13th of December in Milan, a now “classic” event in its tenth year.

QUADRO GENERALE

Approvato il 27 ottobre 2004 dal Parlamento Europeo e dal Consiglio dell’Unione Europea, il Regolamento 1935 del 2004 abroga le precedenti direttive 590/1980/CEE e 109/1989/CEE. Da notare che è subito entrato in vigore: a differenza delle “direttive”, infatti, i “regolamenti” non devono essere ratificati dai Parlamenti nazionali per avere effetto di legge.

However, some important updates have come from Brussels: the fourth and fifth amendment to Directive 72/2002 on plastic materials, Regulation 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practices and Regulation 372/2007 on migration limits of ESBO. In Rome too progress has been made with Ministerial Decrees 217 of 25/9/2007 and 76 of 18/4/007 which deal respectively with paper and cardboard and aluminium in contact with foods.

But let’s take one thing at a time, attempting to summarise all of the above, before describing recently introduced modifications, exceptions and integrations.

THE GENERAL PICTURE Approved on the 27th of October 2004 by the European Parliament and Council of the European Union, Regulation 1935 of 2004 repeals previous directives 590/1980/CEE and 109/1989/CEE. It should be noted that it came into force immediately. Indeed, unlike directives, regulations do not have to be ratified by national Parliaments to become law.

I punti chiave - Il Regolamento Quadro si rivolge sia ai materiali e agli oggetti destinati a contenere gli alimenti, sia “a quelli di cui si prevede ragionevolmente che possano essere messi a contatto con prodotti alimentari, o che trasferiscano i propri componenti ai prodotti alimentari nelle condizioni di impiego normali o prevedibili”. La principale novità del Regolamento Quadro è la definizione del ruolo dell’Efsa, l’Autorità Europea per la Sicurezza Alimentare (con sede a Parma) istituita dalla cosiddetta “Food Law” 178/2002. Ecco, in sintesi, cosa accadrà: un produttore di imballaggi che intenda impiegare nuove tipologie di materiali (ossia non ancora presenti nelle “liste positive” comunitarie) dovrà trasmettere una specifica domanda di autorizzazione allo Stato nazionale (in Italia, va indirizzata al Ministero della Salute), che la girerà subito all’Efsa, senza entrare nel merito della richiesta.

L’Autorità avrà sei mesi di tempo (più altri sei, qualora occorresse un supplemento d’indagine) per esprimere un parere scientifico e trasmetterlo alla Commissione UE, che ratificherà poi la decisione in modo formale. È stato inoltre previsto che i materiali e gli oggetti non ancora entrati in contatto con il prodotto alimentare, al momento dell’immissione sul mercato,

Here, in a nutshell, is what will happen. A packaging producer who intends to use new materials typologies (or rather ones which are not on the community’s “positive list”) will have to file a special application for permission with their own government (in Italy this should be addressed to the Ministry of Health), which will forward it immediately to EFSA, without entering into the merits of the request. The authority will have six months of time (plus a further six if more time is needed for investigation) to express a scientific opinion and transmit it to the EU commission,

debbano essere corredati anche della dicitura “per contatto con i prodotti alimentari” o di un’indicazione specifica sul loro impiego, oppure del simbolo riprodotto nell’Allegato II al Regolamento.

Nel caso di materiali e oggetti attivi, vanno riportate le informazioni sugli impieghi consentiti e le altre indicazioni pertinenti, come il nome e la quantità delle sostanze rilasciate dalla stessa componente attiva.

Il Regolamento, infine, prescrive la rintracciabilità anche dei materiali e degli oggetti a contatto con il cibo, per facilitare il controllo e il ritiro dei prodotti difettosi. Sarà perciò obbligatorio adottare tutte le opportune misure per individuare le imprese da cui e a cui sono stati forniti materiali e oggetti (e, nel caso, le sostanze impiegate per la loro realizzazione).

Tutela del know-how - Nel ripercorrere velocemente i punti chiave del Regolamento, i relatori hanno fugato con forza un dubbio che, a una lettura frettolosa dell’Articolo 16, aveva creato non poche preoccupazioni fra gli addetti ai lavori, in merito a “Dichiarazione di Conformità” e “Documentazione di Supporto”. Semplificando per sommi capi, il timore era che i “segreti industriali” potessero essere condivisi con gli altri attori della supply chain. Il Regolamento, hanno invece ribadito gli

Attivi e intelligenti - Una delle integrazioni al Regolamento che sta per essere approvata (ma attenzione: il documento era ancora in fase di bozza al momento in cui si è svolto il seminario) riguarda i cosiddetti imballaggi attivi e intelligenti. Se una prima versione di questo emendamento conteneva l’indicazione a procedere con autorizzazioni mirate e “caso per caso”, la seconda e probabilmente definitiva versione ne ha ribaltato la ratio, introducendo l’idea di liste positive uniche, senza distinzione fra imballaggi attivi e intelligenti. In ogni caso, a prescindere da eventuali modifiche dell’ultim’ora, è apprezzabile l’apertura del legislatore verso questo tipo di materiali, segno che la vecchia mentalità “prudente” è ormai cambiata radicalmente.

MATERIE

PLASTICHE

Nel corso del 2005, lo ricorderemo tutti, l’Unione Europea ci aveva, per così dire, “spiazzato”. Dopo anni in cui veniva data per certa la stesura di un maxi intervento che avrebbe disciplinato i

Protection of know-how - Running quickly through the key points of the rules, the speakers dispelled a doubt which, upon a hasty reading of Article 16, had caused quite a few concerns regarding “Statement of Conformity” and “Support Documentation”. Briefly simplifying, the fear was that “industrial secrets” could be shared with others in the supply chain. The Regulations, replied the experts, protect company know-how, since they establish that the support documentation should

not be delivered to the customer or supplier but kept “in house” and exhibited to the competent authority only in the case of a motivated control.

Active and intelligent - One of the additions to the Regulations which are about to be approved (But mind!

The document was still being drafted when the seminar was held) concerns so-called active and intelligent packaging. While an initial version of this amendment contained the indication to proceed with targeted , case by case permits, the second and probably definitive version turned this upside down, introducing the idea of having only positive lists, without distinguishing between active and intelligent packaging. In any case, regardless

Se dei primi tre emendamenti abbiamo già parlato nei nostri articoli precedenti (tutti consultabili sul portale www.packmedia.net), vogliamo adesso dedicare qualche breve considerazione al quarto e al quinto.

Limiti di migrazione e scadenze - Il quarto emendamento (già approvato e in via di recepimento da parte degli Stati membri) prevede di fatto un nuovo modo di esprimere la migrazione globale e comprende, fra le altre cose, la

PLASTIC MATERIALS

Migration limits and expiry dates The fourth amendment (already approved and in the process of being absorbed by member states) in fact stipulates a new way of expressing global migration and includes, among other things, a table of reference for five particularly phtalates, restrictions on drawing up declarations of conformity to standards, an update of the “fat reduction factor” (consumption per head to be taken into account is no longer a kilo of fat per day, but 200g) and other specific instructions,

After years of taking it for granted that a maxi intervention would be drafted to regulate assorted multilayer materials (plastic + other materials) and specifically “functional barriers” the Commission preferred to solve the problem by making single amendments to Directive 72/2002 “relative to plastic materials and objects destined to come into contact with food products”.

tabella di riferimento per cinque particolari ftalati, l’indicazione vincolante su come redigere dichiarazioni di conformità a norma, l’aggiornamento del “fattore di riduzione grassi” (il consumo pro capite medio da tenere in considerazione non è più un chilogrammo di grassi al giorno, ma 200 g) e altre disposizioni specifiche, fra cui l’autorizzazione a utilizzare l’etanolo al 50% come simulante nei test su latte, yogurt e panna.

Il V emendamento è invece allo stadio di bozza, anche se in via di approvazione definitiva a breve termine. Stabilisce che la lista positiva degli additivi entrerà in vigore a decorrere dal primo gennaio 2010; gli additivi non inseriti nelle liste positive possono essere utilizzati sino al

31/12/2009 se conformi alle leggi nazionali, a meno che l’EFSA non abbia espresso una propria riserva.

ESBO al ribasso - Altra novità interessante è il Regolamento 372/2007 che riduce il limite di migrazione dell’ESBO (Epoxidised Soya Bean Oil, impiegato come plastificante e stabilizzatore per guarnizioni di PVC di coperchi metallici a vite per vasi e bottiglie di vetro) con alimenti grassi. Già fissato in 1.150 mg/kg, il limite è stato ora stabilito a 300 mg/kg ovvero 50 mg/dm2, mentre per gli alimenti destinati all’infanzia si deve scendere a 30 mg/dm2. I vecchi parametri si applicano fino al 30/6/2008; dal primo luglio è vietata la messa in commercio di coperchi non conformi.

Riciclati per ortofrutta - Passando ora dal piano comunitario a quello nazionale, occorre fare una precisazione sulle plastiche provenienti da riciclo.

L’opinione diffusa è che, in Italia, l’uso di questi materiali sia molto limitato; in realtà, il restrittivo Decreto Ministeriale del 21 marzo 1973 era stato integrato il 27 marzo 2001 da una Circolare del Ministero della Sanità, che consentiva l’impiego di plastiche riciclate, qualora vi fosse uno strato barriera fra esse e l’alimento contenuto. Più di recente, il DM 299 del 22/12/2005 (pubblicato nella G.U.R.I. del 14/2/06), all’articolo 13

Instead, the fifth amendment is still being drafted although it should be approved shortly. It establishes that the positive list of additives will come into force from the first of January 2010. Additives not included in positive lists can be used until 31/12/2009 if they conform to Italian laws, unless Efsa expresses a reservation.

Downward ESBO - Another piece of interesting news is Regulation 372/2007, which reduces the limit of migration of ESBO (Epoxidised Soya Bean Oil, used as a plasticiser and stabiliser for PVC seals on screw-on metal lids for glass jars and bottles) with fatty foods.

Previously established at 1,150 mg/kg, the limit has now been fixed at 300 mg/kg or 50 mg/dm2, while for foods destined for children this figure should be 30 mg/dm2. The old parameters will be applied up to 30/6/2008. From July 1st it will be against the law to sell lids which fail to conform to the rules.

Recycled products for fruit and vegetables - Moving now from Community to Italian law more precise information is required regarding recycled plastics. It is a popular belief that the use of this material in Italy is extremely limited.

In fact, the restrictive ministerial Decree of 21st march 1973 was integrated on 27th March 2001 with a Circular from the Ministry of Health which allowed the use of recycled

La deroga riguarda, per ora, solo la frutta o la verdura protetta da guscio o buccia spessa, ma si pensa che presto vi saranno nuove disposizioni per alimenti come agrumi, ortaggi a foglia e altro.

Il decreto prevede che il ciclo di recupero debba essere “a catena chiusa e controllata”; qualora ciò non fosse possibile, si renderebbero necessari studi scientifici e test di laboratorio che attestino l’assenza di rischi di contaminazione. Questo DM, va ribadito, è coerente con i regolamenti comunitari 1935/2004 e 72/2002; in particolare, la parte che prevede controlli e operazioni di auditing presso gli impianti di riciclo e conversione, si rifà al Regolamento (CE) n. 2023/2006 della Commissione del 22 dicembre 2006 sulle buone pratiche di fabbricazione dei materiali e degli oggetti destinati a entrare in contatto con prodotti alimentari, di cui parleremo più avanti.

CARTA

E CARTONE

Sempre a livello nazionale, per quanto riguarda la carta e il cartone a contat-

More recently, DM 299 of 22/12/2005 (published in G.U.R.I on 14/2/06), in article 13 bis, further extended the field of application granting the production of crates for fruit and vegetables if made from a base of plastics originally suitable for contact with food and if, during the phases of collection and recycling they have had no contact with any harmful substances. For the time being the exception only regards fruit or vegetables protected by thick shells or peels but it is thought that soon there will be a new set of regulations for foods such as citrus fruits, leafy vegetables and others.

The decree states that the collection cycle must be “a closed and controlled chain”. Should this not be

possible then scientific studies and laboratory tests are required to prove that there is no risk of contamination.

It should be emphasised that this Ministerial Decree is consistent with community regulations 1935/2004 and 72/2002. In particular, the section dealing with controls and auditing operations at recycling and transformer plants refers to Regulation (EU) no. 2023/2006 of the Commission of the 22nd of December 2006 on good manufacturing practices of materials and objects destined to come into contact with food products, of which we will speak later.

PAPER AND CARDBOARD In Italy, concerning paper and cardboard in contact with foods, we have DM 217 of 25/9/2007 which

to con gli alimenti, si segnala il DM 217 del 25/9/2007, che aggiorna lo “storico” DM del 21/3/73. In particolare, si autorizza l’uso di ammonio bromuro e sale acetico come coadiuvanti tecnologici di lavorazione. Il buon senso del legislatore ha inserito un comma che sancisce esplicitamente il “mutuo riconoscimento” all’interno dell’Unione Europea: ciò che è legale in un Paese vale anche nell’altro, a patto che non insorgano emergenze di natura igienico/sanitaria.

Armonizzare di più - A livello comunitario si applica il Regolamento generale 1935/2004, visto che non esiste ancora una norma specifica per questi materiali e la situazione fra Stato e Stato, come sappiamo, rimane assai eterogenea: Francia, Italia, Olanda e Finlandia hanno varato proprie leggi nazionali, in Germania esistono raccomandazioni specifiche non vincolanti - le note BfR - e negli altri Paesi rimane una sorta di vuoto legislativo.

Avevamo già citato, in un nostro precedente articolo, la Risoluzione AP (2002) I del Consiglio d’Europa, che stabilisce quali additivi possano essere impiegati nelle fasi di lavorazione della carta. Le risoluzioni del Consiglio d’Europa, lo ricordiamo, non sono vincolanti, tuttavia indicano con autorevolezza la direzione da seguire, e in ge-

What is legal in one country is legal in another, unless there are emergencies of a hygienic/sanitary nature.

More harmonising - At a community level the general Regulation 1935/2004 applies, considering that there is, as yet, no specific rule for these materials and that the situation from country to country is, as we know, rather different: France, Italy, Holland and Finland have passed their own

Collaborazione vincente? - Gli anni passano, ma il sistema tedesco sembra essere quello che funziona meglio: il metodo BfR (si tratta di Raccomandazioni Specifiche concertate con gli attori del comparto, non di leggi) sta facendo scuola anche fuori dell’Europa. Del resto, un battistrada autorevole serve davvero, visto che i lavori nel Consiglio d’Europa stanno procedendo a rilento, e che la Commissione UE non ha ancora assunto una posizione precisa.

Proprio in Germania, grazie alla cooperazione fra laboratori pubblici e privati, si è scoperto che nel cartone si possono nascondere sostanze più pericolose del piombo o dei PCB, come il DIPN (diisopropilnaftalene). Lo stesso BfR ha emesso un’allerta per quanto riguarda i campioni in fibra da riciclo, in cui il diisobutilftalato è presente a livelli maggiori di 5 mg/kg; la sostanza non è stata ancora valutata a fondo, ma per ora si suggerisce un limite di 1 mg/kg (e 0,5 mg/kg se il materiale è destinato al baby food).

Negli anni passati, i laboratori dell’Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Roma) hanno condotto una ricerca dettagliata sull’alluminio, i cui risultati sono stati recepiti dal Consiglio d’Europa per la redazione di un documento tecnico.

Gli studi hanno interessato sia l’alluminio tal quale, impiegato come materia prima pura al 99% nella realizzazione di film e vaschette, sia per la realizzazione di oggetti fusi come caffettiere o piastre per toast. I test si sono svolti da un lato su vaschette monouso con simulanti (acido peracetico al 3%) e alimenti veri (salsa di pomodoro, sottaceti, acqua salata…), dall’altro sulle caffettiere.

Un decreto vincolante - Ora quelle linee guida redatte dal Consiglio d’Europa sono confluite in un documento vincolante per l’Italia, il DM 76 del 18/4/2007.

Successful cooperation? - The years pass but the German system seems to be the one which works best. The BfR method (Specific Recommendations agreed with companies in the sector, not laws) is setting a fashion even outside Europe. On the other hand, somebody has to take the lead, considering that works in the Council of Europe are proceeding at a snail’s pace and that the EU commission has not yet taken a firm position.

It was in Germany that, thanks to partnerships between public and private laboratories, the discovery was made that cardboard can conceal substances which are more harmful than lead or PCB, such as

DIPN (‘Diisopropylnaphthalene’). BfR itself sounded the alert for recycled fibre samples, in which dibutylphthalate is found at levels exceeding 5 mg/kg. The substance has not yet been evaluated thoroughly but for the moment the suggested limit is 1 mg/kg (and 0.5 mg/kg if the material is destined for baby food).

GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICES We first mentioned Regulation (EC) 2023/2006 of the European Commission of 22nd December 2006 on GMP which, de facto, is limited to giving a legal form to a set of recommendations already known by operators in the sector.

Occhio all’inchiostro - Che la 2023/2006 sia stata approvata sull’onda emotiva “dell’affaire ITX”, lo si capisce dall’Allegato che accompagna il Regolamento, dedicato esclusivamente agli inchiostri da stampa impiegati sulla parte non a contatto con gli alimenti.

Riportiamo di seguito, in particolare, le norme riguardanti i processi che prevedono l’applicazione di inchiostri da stampa sul lato di un materiale o di un oggetto non a contatto con il prodotto alimentare.

Oxaqua®-O2 stands up well to humidity present inside the packs

Un percorso di crescita Metalvuoto inizia la propria attività nel campo della metallizzazione di film plastici (destinati ai condensatori elettrici) nel 1972, ed è fra le prime aziende in Europa a intuire le potenzialità di questa tecnologia, complessa e affascinante al tempo stesso. Basti pensare che in un’unica lavorazione sono impiegati vari procedimenti: alto vuoto, fusione dei metalli, criogenia, meccanica, elettronica, attivazione di sistemi plasma ecc.

Nel 1979 si apre al mercato dell’imballaggio flessibile, installando un impianto di metallizzazione completamente dedicato; nel 1990 cede il ramo d’azienda attivo nel settore elettrico per dedicarsi unicamente all’imballaggio flessibile, acquistando una nuova unità di metallizzazione.

Nel 1998, grazie al supporto di un importante centro di ricerca internazionale, sviluppa il “Plasma Actived Deposition” per migliorare le proprietà barriera e di adesione del coating su film plastico. L’anno successivo installa un impianto per la demetallizzazione (per creare “finestre”, ovvero aree libere da alluminio, che permettono di mostrare il prodotto all’interno della confezione). Nel 2006 Metalvuoto installa, nel proprio stabilimento di Roncello, una laccatrice base acqua di 1710 mm di luce netta al fine di soddisfare al meglio le esigenze del settore food che, lo ricordiamo sono: alta barriera all’ossigeno e all’umidità, contenimento dei costi del packaging, eliminazione di possibili contaminazioni causate da solventi, basso impatto ambientale, ottimo appeal dovuto all’alta trasparenza della lacca.

A path to growth Metalvuoto began its activity metalising plastic film (destined for electrical condensers) in 1972, and was among the first European concerns to intuit the potentials of this technology, complex and fascinating at the same time. One only has to think that in one single process various procedures are used: high vacuum, metal smelting, cryogenics, mechanics, electronics, activation of plasma systems etc.

In 1979 the concern opened to the flexible packaging market, installing a completely dedicated metalisation system; in 1990 it ceded the company branch active in the electrical sector to dedicate itself entirely to flexible packaging, buying a new metalisation unit. In 1998, thanks to the support of an important international research centre, the concern developed the “Plasma Actived Deposition” to improve the barrier properties and the adhesion of the coating to the plastic film. A year after that it installed a demetalisation system (for creating “windows” or that is free areas of aluminium, that show the product inside the pack).

In 2006 Metalvuoto installed a 1710 mm wide water based lacquering machine in its works at Roncello so as to best satisfy the needs of the food sector that, we reiterate are: high barrier to oxygen and humidity, containment of packaging costs, elimination of possible contamination caused by solvents, low environmental impact, excellent appeal due to high lacquer transparency.

“Zero carbon” NatureFlex™ Innovia Films Ltd, producer of special BOPP film and Cellophane has recently achieved “zero carbon” for NatureFlex™, its range of lacquered biodegradable and compostable packaging film.

Working with co2balance, a leading service company for carbon, already in 2007 Innovia Films quantified the environmental impact deriving from film manufacture, subsequently contributing to the reforestation of a lot of 3.000 trees at Sand Martin Wood, Faugh in Cumbria, UK. An excellent starting off point is the fact that for the manufacture of NatureFlex Innovia Films uses renewable raw materials: a base of transparent cellulose produced from wood pulp made from renewable tree stock. The NatureFlex films are more rigid and more orientated than many biopolymers currently on the market and hence ideal for horizontal and vertical food packaging using heatsealing (fresh

products, especially biological ones, twist wrap for confectionery, personal hygiene products).

Long live meat Multisorb technologies, specialised in the development and the production of active components for packaging, has introduced its low oxygen MAP FreshPax® CR system to the market, that can increase the shelf life (up to 30 days) and preserve the color of the meat in case-ready format. The system is also suited for polystyrene trays and heatshrink film, a format the consumers prefer to the deep plastic containers used in the MAP systems with a high concentration of oxygen. The FreshPax® CR can be sized in function of the demand for caseready packaging expressed by every retailer: on this count Multisorb offers automated dispensing solutions, configured on the preexisting master bags and tray insertion packaging lines.

Ed è costituito da 4 saloni contigui e concomitanti, dedicati a cosmetici (Cosmeeting), packaging e servizi (Creative), ingredienti (Ingredients) e spa (spa & institut), integrati da molti eventi specializzati: dalle conferenze al Beyond Beauty Lab...

Il prossimo appuntamento - Nel 2007 Beyond Beauty Paris, comunicano gli organizzatori, è cresciuto ulteriormente, soprattutto sul piano dell’autorevolezza e della qualità dei visitatori (quasi 20.000), ma anche della portata internazionale della manifestazione, con un aumento del 18% degli arrivi dall’estero. Sul fronte espositivo - che contava 731 presenze suddivise nei 4 saloni specializzati - si registra un aumento della visibilità delle iniziative mes-

se in campo per valorizzare i diversi segmenti dell’offerta (in primis i prodotti bio e le proposte delle piccole imprese più creative). Aumentano, inoltre, le collettive arricchite dal padiglione nazionale del Brasile (il terzo mercato mondiale della bellezza, con una crescita annuale del 26%) e comprendenti Sudafrica, Turchia, Bulgaria e tanti altri ancora, fra cui l’italiano Polo della Cosmesi in cui sono confluiti anche diverse imprese di rilievo che durante le edizioni precedenti esponevano singolarmente (Gamma Croma e Gibo, per esempio).

Quest’anno la fiera parigina si svolgerà, come sempre, presso gli spazi di Paris Nord Villepinte, con inizio la domenica 5 ottobre per Cosmeeting, spa institut e pharmameeting (che finiranno dunque martedì 7/10) e lunedì 6 ottobre per Creative (in cui troviamo i produttori di packaging) e Ingredients che termineranno dunque mercoledì 8/10.

Past and future but also present time that sees us impersonating many roles imposed on us by modernity in the time of just one day; the “organic” time of nature and the syncopated tempo of culture, thrown together in a boiling pot by the ideas and experiences of humanity; subjective time, deformed by dream and by sensorial perceptions (the madeleine…) and “objective” and linear time of history; philosophical time, like the eternal return and onrushing of changes and fractures, and “physical” time of astronomic phenomenon…

How many “times” indeed are there? And how many more can be conceived of? And, after all, does time “exist”?

Certainly it exists for us, human beings, and represents a basic category of reality. With his usual spirit, Wouter Wiels, during the works of Beyond Beauty Lab 2007, strove to stimulate participants (cosmeticperfumery as well as packaging, service and creative concerns) to “think different”, thus laying down the premises for truly new projects and products.

The results are to be found described and displayed on the website of the Paris fair (www.beyondbeautyparis.com) showing how it is possible to innovate, working together in total freedom, overcoming the barriers generated by specialisation. And all the same attain the creation of a product: industrializable, of high added value, as well as sustainable (also in terms of the environment) in all the production-consumption phases of the sector. Without having to all start off for evermore in search of the elixir of eternal youth.

Beautiful without, and also within Beyond Beauty Paris closes the 2007 edition with a considerable increase in foreign visitors (+18%) and presents a new tessera of the Parisian beauty polyptych called Pharmameeting, entirely dedicated to innovation in pharma. E.P.

Beyond Beauty Paris is by now a happening. Created as a “fair” for beauty products, in brief it has become structured as a yearly rendezvous for the entire sector “upstream” of the cosmeticsperfumery sector. It is comprised of 4 contiguous salons held simultaneously, dedicated to cosmetics (Cosmeeting), packaging and services (Creative), ingredients (Ingredients) and spa (spa & Institut), combined with many other special events: from conferences to Beyond Beauty Lab… As of October 2008 it will make a qualitative leap, introducing a new undertaking entirely dedicated to pharma, with a decidedly special feature: this is an international three day meeting (5-7/10/2008) dedicated to the prospects and trends in pharmacy, that aims at gathering together the main actors of the sector to provide updates on markets, marketing and rulings.

«In particular - Pharmameeting commissioner Philippe Levy and summit director Itec France’s Virginia Saurel explained during the presentation conference - we intend offering decision makers a broad vision of the segment, going beyond the manufacture to broach prospects of development and investment. In other words, we propose pointing out new opportunities of creating added value in a field - that of health and prevention - in which quality and professional ethics stand as “fundamentals”».

Convention + fair - The meeting will be of an international standing and will be set out in a series of conferences dedicated to current hot topics such as legislative developments and the relative impact this has on concerns; business models and success stories at European level; source of development and investment;

exploitation of the sales potentials of pharmacies and rating of intersectorial benchmarking; new niches and profitability… alongside, the exhibition space dedicated to specialists workshops in dermo-cosmetics, phyto/oligo/aroma/nutritherapies, homeopathy, OTC…; architects, communication and design agencies; new technology providers covering production, media, automation (and packaging of course); services; trade (pharmacy networks, brand groups, wholesalers).

In this case too, as in other BBParis salons, the space will be organized so as to clearly highlight the most innovatory products and the niches with the greatest potential for development (anti-age for example).

Pharmameeting is organized by Itec France in cooperation with Néo Pharma, specialised in innovatory automation, management, logistics, commercial architecture solutions etc. for high potential pharmacies.

The coming engagement - In 2007 Beyond Beauty Paris, the organizers communicate, has grown even further, aboveall in terms of the standing and quality

of its visitors (virtually 20,000), but also in terms of the international ranking of the show, with an 18% increase on foreign intake. This year as ever the Paris fair will be held in the spaces of Paris Nord Villepinte, with Cosmeeting, spa institut and Pharmameeting beginning October 5th (hence finishing Tuesday 7/10) and Monday October 6th for Creative (where we find the packaging producers) and Ingredients that will hence terminate Wednesday ■ 8/10.

Eurovetrocap (Trezzano sul Naviglio, MI) has presented its 2007 collections. These comprise the Oeuv line, made up of bottles and jars in glass and PE, complete with their closures, dispensers and accessories.

POLO TECNOLOGICO DELLA COSMESI - Nato nella provincia di Cremona il Polo tecnologico è costituito da 67 imprese, che hanno unito le forze per affrontare i problemi comuni di formazione professionale, ricerca e sviluppo, comunicazione e promozione.

Su quest’ultimo fronte si segnala la partecipazione alle grandi fiere di settore, con una presenza “collettiva” che massimizza la visibilità e minimizza i costi.

All’ultimo Beyond Beauty Paris l’associazione era presente per la prima volta con un grande stand in cui hanno trovato spazio più di trenta imprese. E se per molti si è trattato di un esordio, altri hanno rinunciato allo stand individuale delle edizioni pre-

chettatura, orientamento e controllo), Vetraco (macchine e linee di confezionamento e riempimento) che esponeva, contemporaneamente, anche con uno stand individuale.

Technological cosmetics pole Founded in the province of Cremona the Technological Pole comprises 67 firms that have joined forces to tackle the shared problems of professional training, research and development, communication and promotion. Regarding the latter, the firms participate at important fairs in the sector and do so collectively to maximize visibility and minimize costs. Stanca di portarsi appresso confezioni poco pratiche e ingombranti, ha ideato una linea di bellezza completa, per le donne che viaggiano. Ciascun kit contiene una o due strisce da 5 monodose Lameplast, riempiti con altrettanti prodotti per un trattamento quotidiano completo. Personalizzazione di blister su richiesta Lanciato da Hapa (sede centrale vicino a Zurigo), il sistema digitale a getto d’inchiostro UV Hapa 807 BlisterJet “Drop On Demand” è stato studiato per personalizzare gli astucci blister preformati per uso farmaceutico. Hapa 807 consente ai produttori di passare dalla tradizionale filosofia del “make to batch” (produzione per lotti), al modello più efficiente del ”make to stock” (produzione per scorte). Il sistema - che prevede un’unità dotata di due moduli per la stampa, un caricatore di astucci blister e il meccanismo di trasporto - è in grado di stampare ad uno o due colori fino a 200 blister/minuto. Il caricatore è facilmente regolabile per sistemare blister di varie dimensioni, mentre il rullo di contro pressione assicura uno stampaggio preciso anche su blister di forma irregolare. Per garantire elevati standard qualitativi sono stati integrati dei sistemi di ispezione sia sul caricatore in entrata sia sul punto di uscita (i blister non conformi vengono scartati). Hapa 807 enables producers to go from the traditional philosophy of “make to batch”, to the more efficient model of “make to stock”.

The system - that comprises a unit with two print modules, a blister case loader and conveying mechanism - can print up to 200 blister/a minute with one or two colors. Thanks to Color Compendium, the wished for hue can be easily devised using Merck special effect pigments, and on top of that showing how these selfsame pigments will appear after a pre- and over print lacquering, in combination with a special tone in four color process. With Merck’s Color Compendium the effects of other finishes can also be simulated, for example with UV transparent inks. Another non negligible plus point is that this Merck solution guarantees a simple communication without any misunderstanings between designers, goods producers and printers.

ELOGIO DELLA LEGGEREZZA M-real Consumer Packaging ha messo a punto le nuove versioni dei cartoncini Avanta Ultra e Avanta Prima. Entrambi si distinguono per la stampabilità superiore e un rendimento più elevato, in quanto offrono gli stessi spessori e rigidità delle versioni precedenti ma con un peso ridotto del 2-4%.

Cartoncini patinati ideali per la realizzazione di scatole e astucci pieghevoli, Avanta Ultra e Avanta Prima possono essere stampati in offset, rotocalco e flexo, garantendo sempre risultati uniformi in tutti i processi di trasformazione e confezionamento. È stato inoltre incrementato il livello di umidità all’interno del cartoncino, in modo da aumentarne le proprietà di taglio e di piega, mentre le minime variazioni di grammatura ne hanno migliorato l’omogeneità.

Quality that convinces - Iggesund Paperboard took part at the latest Luxe Pack with the slogan ”Seduced by Invercote”. The allusion is to Invercote card’s capacity to transmit enchanting messages convincingly to the consumer. Printers and converters too have been struck by Invercote’s reliability and the qualitative constancy while designers appreciate the effectiveness of the perfect colour production, formability and clean folding capacity offered by this material in getting their ideas across.

The moisture content of both boards has been increased, enhancing their cutting and creasing properties, and tighter grammage tolerance has improved their consistency.

Avanta Ultra has improved visual smoothness and higher top side whiteness, giving better colour contrast, wider colour range and fast colour matching. It provides a superb surface for eye-catching, attractive print results and is the perfect material for deluxe packaging embellished with special features, such as glossy varnishes, embossings and foils. Quanto al contenitore, Matis ha preferito la confezione da 5 contenitori da 3 ml, stampati in bianco perlato con tappo nero e personalizzati con tampografia di colore nero.

Disponibile anche nelle capacità 5, 8 e 10 ml, con sezione ovale o tonda, questo monodose si trasforma in multidose richiudibile grazie al tappo a vite. Può contenere creme per il viso, sieri, prodotti per il corpo e i capelli, e prodotti cosmetici in genere.

Giglioli Fabrizio (Rovereto sul Secchia, MO) è specializzata nel settore dell’assemblaggio e stampaggio di materie plastiche in sale a contaminazione controllata (classe 10.000). L’azienda modenese offre un’ampia gamma di flaconi di PET, oltre alle relative chiusure e ai “tappi estemporanei” impiegati nel settore farmaceutico, cosmetico e alimentare. Giglioli Fabrizio ha sempre adottato una filosofia contraddistinta da elevati standard qualitativi, garantiti mediante: controllo visivo, prova fori, controllo telecamera per individuare eventuali punti neri sul flacone, controllo dimensionale della bocca del flacone. La Giglioli Fabrizio vanta inoltre una copiosa produzione di flaconcini e fialette di PET, alti 49,5 o 59 mm con una capacità che varia dai 10 ai 15 ml fino ad arrivare ai 20 ml e disponibili in un’ampia gamma di colori a scelta.

The company has always applied an approach featuring high quality standards, guaranteed by: visual controls, hole tests, camera control to locate any black spots on the flacons, control of size of flacon mouth.

Linee per la produzione di stretch film Colines Stretch® - che ha di recente ristrutturato il proprio sito internet (www.colines-stretch.it) - ha messo a punto una nuova linea per la produzione di stretch film. Forte di recenti sviluppi e innovazioni in campo tecnologico, in tema di risparmio energetico e di ottimizzazione del ciclo produttivo, Colines Stretch®, brand di Colines® SpA, ha acquisito diverse commesse sul mercato.

Nell’arco di circa 20 mesi di commercializzazione l’azienda ha venduto 14 linee cast per la produzione di stretch film, di cui buona parte per la produzione di bobine in formato manuale.

Sul sito è possibile trovare informazioni sugli impianti Handrollex®, Jumborollex® e Unicast®, quest’ultimo in grado di produrre sia film stretch sia film cast di PP. • Segnaliamo inoltre che Colines ha consegnato in Russia una linea 5 strati Barriercast®, ridisegnata per soddisfare le esigenze logistiche e di spazio del cliente russo. Il già compatto layout della linea è stato infatti modificato permettendo un risparmio di circa 4 m in lunghezza. La linea produce film barriera coestruso a 5 strati mediante un estrusore principale da 120 mm, 2 da 60 mm e un’ulteriore coppia da 50 mm. La larghezza utile è di 2100 mm, misura ottimale che permette di coprire la maggior parte delle fasce richieste dal mercato.

Stretchfilm production lines Colines Stretch® - that has recently restructured its internet site (www.colines-stretch.it) - has devised a new line for the production of stretchfilm.

Bolstered by the recent developments and innovations in the technological field in terms of energy saving and optimisation of the production cycle, Colines

Stretch®, brand of Colines® SpA, has won a series of market contracts. In some 20 months of marketing the company has sold 14 cast lines for stretchfilm production, most of which for producing reels for manual use.

Visitors to their website can find information on their Handrollex®, Jumborollex® and Unicast® systems, the latter capable of producing both PP stretchfilm and cast film.

• We also state that Colines has delivered a 5 layer Barriercast® line to Russia, redesigned to satisfy the logistical and space demands of the Russian customer. The already compact layout of the line has in fact been modified permitting a saving of around 4 m in length. The line produces coextruded 5 layer barrier film via a main 120 mm extruder, two 60 mm devices and a further pair of 50 mm extruders.

The working width is 2100 mm, an optimum size that enables the covering of most market segments.

Da vent’anni sul mercato, Masterpack (Monvalle, VA) è infatti riuscita ad affermarsi in ambito nazionale con soluzioni dedicate all’industria alimentare e, di recente, ha messo a punto sistemi innovativi destinati ai più svariati settori, cosmetico e farmaceutico compresi.

L’azienda conta attualmente 80 dipendenti e ha chiuso il 2007 con un +20% di fatturato, che ha superato i 20 milioni di euro. Il materiale in questione, infatti, fornito in bobine con zip preapplicate su film di PE o accoppiati PET/PE, OPA/PE, PET/ALU/PE, OPP/PE».

Its true force derives from its capacity to create new products, capable of anticipating market trends and, it goes without saying, capable of supporting the concern on its path to growth and development. Twenty years on the market, Masterpack (Monvalle, VA) has in fact managed

to make a name for itself throughout Italy with dedicated solutions for the food industry and, recently it has devised an innovatory system for a host of sectors, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The company currently counts 80 employees and closed 2007 with a

Ma non manca certo l’attenta osservazione del mercato, che offre spunti per idee originali. Come è successo per un lancio recente.

A VOLCANO OF NEW IDEAS All the new projects, from the conception of the materials to the conception of the machines to make the same, are the result of teamwork, where the “creativity” of a fairly atypical commercial section - largely borne up by the farsightedness and the experience of company head Claudio Binda and by Reto’s intuition - combines with the efficiency of the technical office. And the result is there for all to see. Masterpack’s solutions in turn provide packaging with an added value in terms of service and innovation, two guiding principles of the Varese based company. It is not by chance that, as

«Il nostro parco macchine - ribadisce il direttore commerciale Mirko Reto è molto “giovane”. Il modello più vecchio non supera infatti i due anni di vita.

Abbiamo installato due macchine da stampa flexo digitale a sei e otto colori, ma stiamo valutando di acquistare anche una dieci colori. Disponiamo inoltre di due accoppiatrici solventless (che si distinguono per la loro flessibilità in termini di cambio lavoro e tempi di lavaggio); sette taglierine con processori particolari per personalizzare i film con informazioni e dati variabili, quali ad esempio l’EAN code; perforatori laser; macchine che realizzano buste preformate Doypack; una pre-zippatrice che utilizza il sistema brevettato Inno-Lok, senza dimenticare le macchine, di nostra produzione, che applicano il sistema Masterlabel.

Masterpack adotta un sistema di rintracciabilità che consente, per ogni lotto prodotto, di risalire ai singoli materiali usati e ai relativi fornitori. Ha ottenuto sia la certificazione ISO 9001/Vision2000 sia quella ambientale ISO 14001 e, per offrire maggiori garanzie ai clienti, ha aderito allo standard BRC/IoP. Ma l’azienda si è spinta oltre, attivandosi per ottenere anche la certificazione FDA... un passo fondamentale per coloro i quali intendano affacciarsi sul mercato americano. «Non abbiamo certo la presunzione di fare concorrenza ai colossi americani; contiamo però di ritagliarci uno spazio interessante, lavorando con la correttezza e la competenza che ci sono proprie».

«Our machine yard - commercial head Mirko Reto reiterates - is very “young”. The oldest model is no more than two years of age. We have installed two flexo six and eight color digital print machines, but we are also thinking of buying a ten color version. We also have two solventless laminators (that stand out for their flexibility in terms of workchange and washing times); seven slitters with special processes for personalising the film with variable data and information, such as for example the EAN code; laser perforators; machines that create Doypack preformed bags; a pre-zipper that uses the Inno-Lok patented system, without overlooking the machines we produce ourselves for applying the Masterlabel system.

Masterpack uses a track&trace system that enables them to identify back to the single materials used and the suppliers of each single product. The concern has also gained both ISO 9001/Vision2000 as well as ISO 14001 environmental certification and, to offer the customer greater guarantees, it has adhered to BRC/IoP standards.

But the company has gone further, and is also applying for FDA certification…. a fundamental step for anyone wishing to operate on the American market. «We don’t have the presumption of trying to compete with the American giants; we hope though to stake out an interesting space on that market, working the correctness and skill that we have come to be associated with».

Nuova vita ai prodotti - «Abbiamo messo a punto un nuovo sistema “apri e chiudi” che utilizza un film di polipropilene antifog. Masterlabel è dotato di un sigillo di garanzia - spiega Reto - e offre un vantaggio notevole: il nostro cliente può proporre un utile servizio al consumatore, senza dover necessariamente sostituire il materiale usato in precedenza. Il sistema “prezipper” tradizionale applicato in bobina, infatti, comportava costi non sempre sostenibili in relazione al valore di alcuni prodotti e, soprattutto, richiedeva l’impiego di polietilene nello strato interno del film. La maggior parte dei produttori di insalate o frutta secca, abituati a usare in prevalenza polipropilene, avrebbe dovuto cambiare abitudini, ridurre la trasparenza delle confezioni o adottare materiali accoppiati, con una sensibile incidenza sui costi. Ecco perché abbiamo pensato di lanciare qualcosa di diverso, e il mercato ci sta dando ragione. Tanto è vero che Masterlabel viene attualmente utilizzato da Coop Italia per il confezionamento di insalate e da altri grandi operatori del food come La Linea Verde SpA. Misurare IL RISPARMIO F iliale di San Benedetto (50%) e Orangina Group (50%), L’Européenne d’Embouteillage è attiva in Francia a Donnery, Gadagne, La Courneuve e Meyzieu, dove confeziona le acque delle sorgenti locali soprattutto in bottiglie da 1,5 e 2 l. Per ottimizzare le fasi di formazione del carico palettizzato, ha scelto una soluzione messa a punto da ITW Mima Packaging Systems, ottenendo buoni risultati in termini di cadenze produttive, qualità dell’avvolgimento e riduzione del consumo di materiali, contribuendo così anche alla tutela dell’ecosistema.

Una scelta ponderata - Attualmente in funzione presso il sito di Donnery, la nuova Octopus Twin di ITW Mima Packaging Systems (Masku, FIN) è un’avvolgitrice ad anello rotante che fa ruotare il film attorno al carico e quindi deposita uno strato di copertura per garantirne l'impermeabilità.

Prima dell’installazione, la macchina è stata oggetto di alcuni test presso il centro ITW Mima Packaging Systems di Vitron, nel sud

del Belgio, per verificarne prestazioni e qualità dell’output. I risultati sono stati buoni, e hanno dimostrato che l’avvolgimento eseguito con la Octopus protegge la merce contro le infiltrazioni d’acqua, persino quando il pallet è esposto alla pioggia per due o tre giorni di seguito (in previsione di uno stoccaggio temporaneo dei bancali all’esterno). I test hanno evidenziato risultati lusinghieri anche dal punto di vista delle cadenze produttive.

Le prime prove con reggiatura su quattro lati e posa della copertura impermeabile sono state eseguite su bottiglie da 1,5 e 2 l, disposte su pallet da 800 x 1200 mm; test analoghi sono stati svolti anche su semipallet, una modalità di trasporto sempre più diffusa. Oltre a una riduzione del consumo di film di materiale, le simulazioni hanno dimostrato che è possibile lavorare a un ritmo di 83 pallet/h con bottiglie da 1,5 l (reggiatura più sovrapposizione della copertura impermeabile), e di 80 pallet/h con bottiglie da 2 l. Si sale invece a 120 semipallet (800 x 600 mm) per ora, con bottiglie da 1,5 l. Insomma, considerando che

Before being installed, the machine was subjected to a series of tests at the ITW Mima Packaging Systems centre at Vitron, in the south of Belgium, to check performance and quality of the output.

The results were good, and showed that the wrapping carried out with the Octopus protects the goods against

The tests also showed how good the production rates were. The first tests with strapping on four sides and laying of the waterproof cover were carried out on 1.5 to 2 l bottles placed on a pallet measuring 800 x 600 mm; similar tests were also carried out on semipallets, an evermore popular mode of transport. As well as reducing the consumption of film, the simulations showed it was possible to work at a rate of 83 pallets/h with a 1.5 l bottles (strapping plus placing waterproof covering), and 80 pallets/h with 2 l bottles. The figures rise to 120 semipallets (800 x 600 mm) for now with 1.5 l bottles. That is to say considering that a standard pallet

End of line & Handling Pallet with chip Light, sturdy and longlasting, the My Pallets I are the new creations of Martini Alfredo SpA. The raw materials used (the result of cutting edge technology), the design and engineering phases (the latter performed with accurate simulation techniques) have contributed to optimising the shape, size and weight of the pallet in relation to all the various situations of use they are subjected to. Tested in accord with UNI -EN ISO 8611-1, ISO/TS8611-2, ISO/TS8611-3 standards they can be fitted with a rewritable passive type microchip, with transmission to world standard, capable or receiving and transmitting all the goods ID information online. The My Pallets I (max dynamic capacity 1600 kg) are available in the size 800x1200 with or without containment edge; the range is completed with the Pallet My I BIS model with struts (max dynamic capacity 2000 kg). Both the models have a static capacity of 5000 kg.

Pack stacker Morc2, a concern based at Castel Bolognese (RA) specialized in the production of conveyance and industrial automation systems, recently devised an automatic system for stacking packed products. This unit, which handles thermoformed trays, boxes and tubs, can optimize end-of-line boxing cycles, especially when frequent changeovers are required or when the phase is handled manually. The system can reach speeds of up to 100 strokes/min and can stack a variable number of objects, depending on the shape and type of product.

Changeover is extremely quick and easy and can be adjusted according to the length, width and number of products to be stacked. Morc2 can offer handling solutions and also proposes file combiners/alignment units, multi-lane dividers, object rolling devices, box tippers, accumulation conveyors and lifts.

Il cambio formato è estremamente rapido e semplice e può disporre di regolazioni in lunghezza, larghezza e numero di prodotti da sovrapporre. Morc2 è in grado di studiare soluzioni di movimentazione proponendo anche gruppi di allineamento/combinatori di file, divisori multipista, dispositivi ruota pezzi, ribalta scatole, trasportatori per accumulo ed elevatori.

Un secondo impianto FlexLink è stato installato, sempre a Gien, per le quattro linee di profumi (qui si producono, tra gli altri, i profumi di Jean-Paul Gaultier per il

FlexLink’s solution can handle eight cosmetics lines. All the lines use XB and XM conveyors prior to palletization.

Each conveyor handles a family of products (trigger pumps, tubes,

small flacons, pots and other liquid containers), packed using different technologies. Tubes and pots are often conveyed in godets to the manual processing stations to be capped and receive finishing touches, and all the godets are devised according to the type of container to be handled, to ensure the system’s maximum versatility.

Efficient integration - Each line is unique and FlexLink has had to provide systems able to “connect” different machines.

Each of the four production lines, which are fitted with special fillers, use XB and XM conveyors prior to palletization.

Three lines produce flacons and the fourth creates small samples of perfume. In this case, too, flacons are transferred in godets to the manual packaging and final inspection stations.

Space for special packs - XM carousels -which are small to free valuable floor space -are particularly suitable for conveying godets. There are manual packaging stations at the end of the line indispensable for when special packs are requested. The most suitable conveyor for this use is the broad XB model, with lateral delivery. M. Blind at Shiseido commented, “We are devising a line for launches at special events intended especially for manual processing and based on an XB conveyor, to handle special ■ packs”.

Securjet propone infatti, a garanzia di una maggiore affidabilità, un inchiostro per alimenti, nei colori rosso e blu, utilizzabile dal sistema di marcatura Ci1000 Food Grade, progettato, testato e certificato FDA ed EU per applicazioni specifiche nel settore alimentare. On the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary, Zanasi Srl will be presenting important industrial coding systems at Interpack 2008: the Z101 (DOD technology), Z640 (HIDEF technology), Z3000 and Z5000 (CIJ technology).

• The Z101 combines cutting edge electronics and hydraulics in an extremely solid and compact design, accompanied by a 5,7” backlit touchscreen display. The innovatory printhead can boast micro electrovalve OEM technology and can be rotated to enable 5 different print heights (from 7 to 24mm).

Inkjet option

L’opzione inkjet Nimax propone le stampanti Domino, in grado di assicurare qualità e affidabilità nella marcatura a getto d’inchiostro del packaging primario e degli imballi secondari, con soluzioni specifiche anche per il settore del farmaceutico. Dall’inkjet al trasferimento termico (senza ovviamente dimenticare il laser): il know-how di Nimax (BO) copre ogni tecnologia e tipologia di marcatura, ponendosi al servizio delle esigenze di identificazione e tracciabilità espresse dai vari ambiti industriali. Punta di diamante dell’intera offerta Nimax sono i sistemi per la stampa a marchio Domino, di cui l’azienda emiliana è rappresentante per l’Italia. Tra questi, segnaliamo le stampanti Serie A e Serie C, accomunate dalla tecnologia a getto d’inchiostro ma pensate per soddisfare necessità di ordine differente, e in punti diversi della linea.

La Serie V - Domino ha di recente presentato la Serie V, soluzioni per la sovrastampa a trasferimento termico (TTO) di alta qualità capaci di marcare codici chiaramente leggibili sugli imballaggi flessibili. Ideale per le applicazioni caratterizzate da grandi volumi, per esempio sulle macchine FFS, la Serie V comprende oggi i tre codificatori V100, V200 e V400. Con una risoluzione di stampa di 300 dpi, sono in grado di applicare dati variabili, fra cui testi, codici a barre, Data Matrix e loghi, su un’ampia scelta di materiali per l’imballaggio flessibile, come film e carta. Nimax is offering its Domino printers, capable of ensuring quality and reliability in inkjet marking of primary and secondary packaging, with specific solutions for the pharmaceutical sector as well. From inkjet to heat transfer (without obviously overlooking laser); the knowhow of Nimax (BO) covers all technologies and types of marking, placing itself at the service of the identification and traceability needs expressed by the various industrial environments. The lead products of the Nimax’s entire range are the Domino brand print systems, the Emilia based concern being their representative for Italy.

Among these we highlight the A and C Series printers, that both have inkjet technology but have been devised for satisfying different types of needs and in different points of the line.

The V Series - Domino recently presented the V Series, solutions for high quality thermal transfer overprinting (TTO) capable of marking clearly legible codes on flexible packaging. Ideal for applications featuring high volumes, for examples on FFS machines, the Series V today also comprises the three coders V100, V200 and V400. With a print resolution of 300 dpi, they can apply variable data, including wording, barcodes, Data Matrix and logos, on a broad choice of materials for flexible packaging, such as film and paper. The Series V includes machines used in single or intermittent mode, that can be installed on a great variety of packaging machines such as vertical or horizontal FFS: this is why this series is shown to be a successful choice for many food and pharmaceutical applications. Labeling & Coding Speciale per pallet Una delle ultime novità presentate da Altech (Bareggio, MI) è il print/apply ALcode P. Si tratta di un’evoluzione interessante nei sistemi di etichettatura per pallet: la nuova macchina è stata infatti rivista nella struttura esterna, ora più ergonomica, con il quadro comandi integrato nella cabina antinfortunistica e pannello touch-screen (opzionale) per la gestione dei dati da stampare e della logica dell’applicatore.

Due, i dispositivi di applicazione etichette fra cui scegliere.

• Il primo è il tipico applicatore Altech ad assi ortogonali, che si muove su robuste guide volventi ed è in grado di applicare etichette su due (fronte + lato) o tre (fronte + lato + retro) lati del bancale. Questo applicatore, che può etichettare in tempo reale anche pallet di dimensioni differenti, è un classico della produzione Altech, e le decine di unità installate ne testimoniano affidabilità e versatilità nelle più svariate applicazioni e condizioni di lavoro.

Special for pallets One of the latest new features presented by Altech (Bareggio, MI) is the ALcode P print/apply, an interesting evolution in the pallet labeling system: the exterior has been redesigned, now more ergonomic, with integrated command control in the accident prevention cabin and touchscreen panel (optional) for handling the print data and applicator logic.

There are two label application devices to choose from.

• The first is the typical orthogonal axis Altech applicator, that moves on sturdy turning revolving guides and can apply labels on two (front + side) or three (front + side + back) sides of the pallet. This applicator, that can also label pallets of different sizes in real time, is an Altech classic, and the tens of units installed bear witness to its reliability and versatility in the most varied applications and conditions of use.

• The second applicator, developed from scratch on the basis of an original idea from

Exploiting fanless and HDD less technology, Omron offers a solution overcoming frequent hard disk faults, blocking of the operating system and/or application, crashing and hardware instability (broken fan, fluctuating voltage, out of range CPU temperature).

DyaloX adopts fanless and diskless technology. This means there are no moving parts and heating during operation. The hard disk, integrated in the motherboard, is static. All problems relating to heat and moving parts are therefore eliminated.

Furthermore, the exclusive O-RAS (Omron RAS) solution avoids typical hard disk problems, such as crashing of the operating system. O-RAS technology functions with a card developed by Omron (O-RAS S1 card) and several new improvements made to the ORAS Core BIOS system.

Anti-crash function - Crashing of the operating system can result in damage to products and dangers on the production lines. Exclusive O-RAS anti-crash technology by DyaloX, which enhances the reliability of embedded systems, can prevent the operating system from crashing. Should the operating system block, O-RAS creates a log of events and automatically re-boots the system, and, when re-start is successful, gives a report. In the case of any instability, O-RAS monitors the critical parameters, informs the user and saves a log. It also re-starts the system in accordance with the user’s settings and saves a “snapshot of the PC’s status” on a settable basis.

Customized BIOS -BIOS settings on the CMOS chip can be saved on the motherboard’s EEPROM memory. No battery is required and setup recovery is simplified. LCD lighting can be easily managed with API Omron O-RAS. Its contrast can be controlled with software.

Small, flexible... and in step CNC complex applications are looking ever more to step motor technology. Furthermore, many pneumatic systems are now replaced by electric drives. B&R Automazione Industriale Srl (Passirana di Rho, MI) therefore devised ACOPOSmicro ultra-compact drives for controlling step motors and servo-motors in the low performance range. Only 63 mm in thickness, ACOPOSmicro -an addition to the families of the ACOPOS and ACOPOSmulti series -takes up considerably less space in the control board. Available power supply levels (80 VDC and 110/230 VAC) allow for high torque and speed at a power of 50 W and 1 kW. Sfruttando la tecnologia fanless e HDD less, Omron è in grado di offrire una soluzione ai frequenti danneggiamenti dell’hard disk, ai blocchi del sistema operativo e/o dell’applicazione, alle cadute improvvise dell’alimentazione e all’instabilità dell’hardware (rottura delle ventole, tensione fluttuante, temperatura della CPU fuori range).

La tecnologia fanless e diskless, adottata da DyaloX, non prevede parti in movimento né riscaldamenti durante il funzionamento. L’hard disk è di tipo statico, integrato nella scheda madre. sistemi embedded, consente di evitare crash al sistema operativo. Se il sistema operativo si blocca O-RAS genera un LOG di quanto accaduto, riavvia automaticamente il sistema e fornisce informazioni dopo un restart del sistema avvenuto con successo. In caso di situazioni di instabilità O-RAS esegue il monitoraggio dei parametri critici, informa l’utente e salva un LOG. Inoltre, riavvia il sistema in base alle impostazioni dell’utente e salva uno “snapshot dello stato del PC” ad intervalli di tempo impostabili.

BIOS customizzato - Le impostazioni del BIOS presenti nel chip CMOS possono essere salvate sulla memoria EEPROM della scheda madre. Nessuna batteria è necessaria e il recupero del setup è semplificato.

L’illuminazione dell’LCD può essere facilmente gestita grazie alle API Omron O-RAS. Via software si può anche controllarne il contrasto.

Piccolo, flessibile... e segna il passo Le applicazioni complesse CNC si stanno orientando sempre più verso la tecnologia dei motori passo-passo. Inoltre, numerosi sistemi pneumatici vengono ora sostituiti con azionamenti elettrici. B&R Automazione Industriale Srl (Passirana di Rho, MI) ha progettato quindi ACOPOSmicro, azionamenti ultracompatti in grado di comandare motori passo-passo e servomotori nella gamma delle basse prestazioni. Con una larghezza di soli 63 mm, ACOPOSmicro - che va ad aggiungersi alle famiglie della serie ACOPOS e ACOPOSmulti - permette di risparmiare un notevole spazio all’interno del quadro elettrico. Valvole proporzionali

alpha-Wittenstein (sede italiana a Sesto S. Giovanni, MI) ha ampliato la propria gamma produttiva combinando riduttori di precisione con pignoni e cremagliere, offrendo sistemi di azionamento completi. I vantaggi più significativi dei nuovi sistemi sono: • precisione di posizionamento lineare di 30 µm anche senza l'uso di un sistema di misurazione lineare; • accelerazioni fino a 4 g e velocità di corsa oltre 300 m/min; • rispetto a un motore lineare, in un centro di fresatura di media grandezza, si possono risparmiare fino a 20 euro per ora di funzionamento.

Grazie al software di dimensionamento cymex® di alpha, si ottiene la combinazione ottimale di riduttore, pignone e cremagliera alpha, dimensionati in base al motore utilizzato.

I nuovi sistemi pignone&cremagliera sono forniti in tre classi di sistema: “Precision System”, per le esigenze più elevate in termini di dinamica e precisione in applicazioni high-end; “Smart System”, per una maggiore libertà in applicazioni flessibili; “Economy System”, per applicazioni lineari standard.

La gamma di valvole proporzionali Norgren, serie VP (una tra le più complete nell'ambio dei prodotti pneumatici) è disponibile con portate da 100 a 17.000 l/min, pressioni da 1 a 20 bar. Adatte alle più svariate applicazioni, le valvole Norgren sono impiegate negli impianti per la produzione di veicoli, per controllare i sistemi di saldatura, per i sistemi di verniciatura a spruzzo o di distribuzione di adesivo. Le stesse vengono inoltre usate nei laboratori per la verifica di apparecchiature di precisione, per la campionatura o nelle macchine per la produzione di carta per controllarne la tensione.

• Norgren (Vimercate, MI) propone anche le isole di valvole serie VM, disponibili in taglie da 10 e 15 mm, portate di 430 e 1.000 l/min e con possibilità di effettuare cablaggi singoli, multipolari e fieldbus, secondo tutti i protocolli presenti sul mercato.

Le isole di valvole possono essere configurate da 2 a 16 stazioni con singolo o doppio solenoide. Tutte queste opzioni fanno sì che si ottengano oltre 15 milioni di configurazioni possibili.

Isola di valvole Serie H è la nuova isola di valvole presentata da Camozzi e disponibile in versione multipolare, fino ad un massimo di 16 elettrovalvole bistabili, o seriale fino ad un massimo di 32 elettrovalvole, sempre bistabili. Questa Serie di valvole, è disponibile in due taglie da 10,5 e 21 mm e ha portate fino a 600 Nl/min. Una delle principali caratteristiche è di avere un solo lato impegnato per le connessioni, quindi estremamente flessibile nel posizionamento. Grazie all'elevata tecnologia, alla vasta gamma di opzioni realizzabili e alla totale flessibilità, sia nei componenti pneumatici sia in quelli elettrici, le isole di valvole Serie H possono essere utilizzate vantaggiosamente in ogni applicazione: in particolare nei sistemi automatizzati utilizzati nell'ambito dell'assemblaggio, della robotica, della stampa, della cartotecnica e nel settore tessile.

Linear drives alpha-Wittenstein (Italian headquarters at Sesto S. Giovanni, MI) has extended its product range combining precision gear reduction units with pinions and racks, offering complete drive systems. The most important advantages of the new systems are: • linear positioning accuracy of 30 µm without the use of a line measuring system; • acceleration up to 4 g e and cruise speed over 300 m/min; • compared to a linear motor, in a medium sized milling centre, up to 20 Euro an hour of operating can be saved.

• Il sensore di tacca KT1 è caratterizzato da una sorgente luminosa a led luce bianca che copre l’intero spettro visivo ed è in grado di far risaltare il maggior numero di contrasti possibili. La regolazione è di tipo a trimmer come una comune fotocellula.

• KTH5W è in grado di riconoscere e leggere gli ologrammi senza false interpretazioni. Trova applicazione nelle macchine per imballaggio o da stampa per identificare l’ologramma come tacca di riferimento o per la lettura di particolari tipologie di carta riflettente.

• Il sensore ibrido KT6W utilizza la custodia standard del mo-

I nuovi sensori fotoelettrici World-Beam® Q20, ad alte prestazioni, di Banner Engineering (in Italia Turck Banner Srl), vengono forniti in un contenitore rettangolare compatto molto diffuso che ne facilita l’installazione in molte applicazioni. Tutti i modelli hanno fori di fissaggio filettati 3 mm alla distanza standard di 25,4 mm per un’installazione rapida. La nuova serie World-Beam® Q20 comprende modelli a sbarramento, a riflessione diretta e a retroriflessione polarizzata o non.

Gli involucri robusti hanno classificazioni IP67 e NEMA6, per impieghi in condizioni difficili. Le prestazioni della nuova serie si trovano in genere solo in sensori di dimensioni maggiori.

La progettazione ASIC avanzata riduce al minimo la diafonia e l’interferenza dalle sorgenti elettromagnetiche e RF. Sono disponibili modelli con uscita a cavo 2 o 9 m, o connettore di tipo Pico M8 o euro M12. Molti i settori di applicazione dei nuovi sensori: trattamento dei materiali, produzione automatizzata, imballaggi, trattamento degli alimenti, elettronica e semiconduttori.

Panasonic Electric Works Italia (Bussolengo, VR) fornisce una vasta gamma di prodotti: controllori programmabili (PLC) e sensori fotoelettrici sono le tipologie di prodotto più importanti, a cui si aggiungono i sistemi di visione, il motion (inverter e servoazionamenti) e le interfacce operatore (pannelli e supervisione).

• Il PLC compatto FPSigma ha prestazioni da modulare avanzato: 32 Kpassi di programma, ingressi in frequenza (fino a 50 kHz) e uscite a impulsi (fino a 100 kHz). È espandibile fino a 384 I/O e si distingue per eccellenti caratteristiche nel motion control. Ideale complemento all’FPSigma è il nuovo GT32, un pannello touch da 5,5” TFT a 4096 colori.

• Il catalogo sensori fotoelettrici Sunx comprende numerose tipologie. Particolarmente richiesti i sensori miniaturizzati serie EX10, EX20 ed EX30, che risolvono qualsiasi problema di ingombro. • Roller element bearing - This stands as the most advantageous and economic solution for the construction of rotating bodies and is customisable in both size and materials. The roller element bearing is made up of four ground raceways in tempered steel and a polylaminate strip cage containing the spheres. The bearings can be lodged within the structure, so as to reduce the size as much as possible and leave a broad centre free. Lorandi Silos si rivolge soprattutto ad aziende che si occupano di rigenerazione ed estrusione nonché a costruttori di macchinari che necessitano di soluzioni per muovere, miscelare, pulire e gestire granuli, scaglie, film, rigenerati di forma particolare e materie plastiche in genere.

Rilevare senza errori Azienda specializzata nella produzione di sistemi di validazione e ispezione degli imballaggi, Reconcile Engineering (Dublino) si è trovata ad affrontare un problema sollevato da un proprio cliente, un importante produttore di CD. Quest’ultimo doveva effettuare l’ispezione delle confezioni stampate dei compact disk, dal momento che eventuali incongruenze potevano comportare ritardi e costosi richiami. Gli obiettivi, in particolare, erano assicurare che i CD con il retro scritto in lingua francese non fossero inviati in Germania e viceversa, e verificare che le retrocopertine dei CD fossero allineate in maniera corretta e orientate nella giusta direzione. I responsabili di Reconcile Engineering hanno quindi esaminato le diverse opzioni disponibili per questo genere di ispezioni, verificando le potenzialità di numerose soluzioni, tra cui il sensore Checker di Cognex (azienda americana specializzata nella progettazione, realizzazione e commercializzazione di sistemi di visione). Il sensore per l’ispezione dei pezzi di Cognex ha dimostrato tutte le sue potenzialità nell’individuazione dei pattern di testo stampati sui contenitori dei CD, motivo per cui è stato installato sulla linea di stampa dai tecnici di Reconcile. L’intera operazione ha richiesto solamente un paio d’ore: anche in un lasso di tempo così breve, Checker è stato in grado di rilevare e correggere un’incongruenza. Sul sensore Checker è stato inoltre installato un puntatore laser collegato a un PLC in modo da consentire all’operatore di allineare le lenti con il prodotto che deve essere “studiato”.

Pneumatic storage and transport of powders and granules Lorandi Silos of Brescia operates mainly in plant engineering and material handling for large systems, mainly for the storage and pneumatic handling of powders and granules. The company, that was founded in 1952, does all its own engineering, creates its own software and makes over 80% of the components installed itself. Each system is specifically designed to single customer requirements, this in full compliance with the applicable safety regulations and directives, with special focus on Atex directive 94/9/CE. The company builds highly automated silos made of stainless steel, aluminium or galvanized metal, entirely monolithic or with panels that can be assembled using the concern’s unique flanging system, which facilitates construction and transportation.

• Lorandi Silos also operate in another sector, pneumatic conveying systems, but with different range of applications. The

company mass produces components for low-pressure pneumatic conveyors, fans, pipes, elbows, quick-fit couplings, deflectors, deviators, Venturi injectors and cyclones. Other industrially produced items include vertical and horizontal mixers, bagholding frames, rotary separators for different types of plastic products, and rotating valves made of pressed sheet metal, cast iron and even stainless steel for special applications. Lorandi Silos mainly serves regeneration and extrusion companies and manufacturers of machinery for the plastics industry that require new solutions for moving, mixing, cleaning and handling granules, flakes and films regenerated in a particular form, and plastic materials in general.

Scanning without errors Company specialised in the production of packaging inspection and validation system, Reconcile Engineering (Dublin) found itself dealing with a problem raised by a

SPI dunque ispeziona, ripara, verifica dopo la riparazione, taglia e ribobina, il tutto in un unico passo; il sistema è dotato di un accumulatore attivo di bobine, localizzato a valle dell’unità di visione. Quando viene segnalato un errore, la macchina si ferma con una decelerazione controllata, quindi inverte il proprio moto e trascina l’errore sul tavolo di editing, ubicato invece a monte del sistema di visione; durante queste fasi, le unità di taglio e ribobinatura rimangono bloccate. In questo modo, l’integrità e la qualità delle bobine finite sono ineccepibili.

The objectives in particular were to ensure that the CD with the back written in French were not sent to Germany and viceversa, and check that the back cover of the CD was lined up correctly in right direction.

The head of Reconcile Engineering hence examined the various options available for this type of inspection, checking the potential of numerous solutions, including Checker and Cognex (US company specialised in designing, creating and trading viewing systems).

The sensor for the inspection of the Cognex pieces showed all its potentiality in locating the pattern of printed wording on the CD containers, reason why it was installed on thee print line by Reconcile technicians. The entire operation only required a couple of hours: even in such a short period of time, Checker was able to pick up

and correct an incongruency. On top of that a PLC laser targeter was installed on the Checker sensor so as to enable the operator line up the lens with the product to be “studied”.

Label inspection Rotoflex has devised SPI, a single pitch inspection system for automatic, high speed checking and certifying labels for those industrial segments where safety is a priority need, comprising pharmaceuticals. SPI hence inspects, repairs, checks after repair, cuts and rewinds, all this in one pitch; the system comes with an active reel accumulator, located downstream of the vision unit. When an error is indicated, the machine slows down to a stop, and then reverses motion and draws the error onto the editing table, this located upstream from the viewing system; during these phases, the cutting and rewinding units are blocked. In this way the integrity and quality of the finished reels are unimpaired.

Components & Other equipment Purifying technologies Aertecnica Croci Srl (Pombia, NO) is specialized in solutions for the filtration of harmful gases and dust. Over these last years the company, thanks to its engineering division, has developed a considerable knowhow in the design and creation of automatic systems for in line recovery, grinding, siloing and/or instant re-insertion in the main work cycle of plastic film waste from the blown film and cast film lines. Here are some of their numerous solutions.

• Trim-Feed Sc55 regranulator is the result of special research, guaranteeing direct in-line use of LDPE and LLDPE waste film recovered from bubble systems with outputs between 7 and 40 kg/h.

• The Ac compressor is used in the recovery process for storing the waste of PP-PTP-PE-PA and laminates. The small system minimizes floor coverage and reduces storage, transport and labour costs.

The company covers a host of fields: plastic conversion systems, rotogravure printing systems, systems for processing food products, glass and metals.

Weighing instruments for pallet truck Società Cooperativa Bilanciai (Campogalliano, MO) designs and produces weighing instruments. Its product range includes equipment to meet all the weighing needs in the various production sectors: food, agriculture, commerce, industry, transport; for both simple and more complex applications, wherever weighing, managing and controlling is needed. All the weighing systems sold under the Soc. Coop. Bilanciai trademark have “EC approval” markings as a guarantee for a perfect compliance with the requirements (measurements and safety) under the following standards: EEC Directive 90/384, Italian Decree Law 517, EN 55022 and EN 60284.

• In the PTM-N weighing systems for manual drawbar pallet trucks, the weight is displayed on an electronic onboard indicator, placed in a clearly visible position for the operator, connected to an autonomous power supply.

The weight is detected via four IP67 stainless steel high precision load cells. The indicator, used to enter, programme and store the alphanumeric descriptions, can display: the date and time, the goods code, the generic code, the progressive number and the gross, net and tare weight, plus the totals (partial and general) for the goods and generic codes. Special operating modes can also be selected: multiple tare, piece counter and sum counter. In addition to the standard version, the system can also be supplied in a stainless steel version. The instrument is also available in a type-approved version with EC markings indicating compliance with EEC Directive 90/384.

Negli ultimi anni la società, grazie alla sua divisione di engineering, ha sviluppato un elevato know-how nella progettazione e realizzazione di impianti automatici per il recupero in linea, macinazione, insilaggio e/o istantanea re-immissione nel ciclo principale di lavorazione di rifili di film plastici provenienti dalla lavorazione di linea blown-film e cast film.
