AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL
The ‘Oculus’ is the striking centrepiece of the new Main Entrance to the Australian War Memorial.
Latin for eye, the glass and steel oculus is a mathematical inversion of the Memorial’s dome.
The Entrance now ensures safe, accessible and allweather entry for all visitors to the National Treasure.
The 15 qualities such as ‘loyalty’ that are featured in the stained glass windows in the Hall of Memory, at the heart of the Memorial, are now also cast into the foor of the Main Entrance and illuminated under the Oculus.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ofcially opened ‘for all’ the Commemorative Entrance of the 84-year-old building on February 3.
“For nearly eight and a half decades, the Australian War
Memorial has kept the memory of all who have served, alive and strong,” Prime Minister Albanese said.
“The new Main Entrance opens the Memorial’s heart even wider to all Australia.”
The frst Australian Aboriginal commissioned ofcer in the Australian Army, Captain Reginald Saunders, has been honoured with a display installed at the Main Entrance.
From the Gunditjmara people, Captain Saunders served in WWll and the Korean War.
‘Quiet Skies’ is a breathtaking glass installation suspended above the new spiral stairs on the east and west sides of the concourse.
Annette Blair, an internationally renowned resident artist at Canberra Glassworks, created the twin sculptures. Each array has an astounding 900 glass leaves tinted to allude to sunrise and sunset.
The Director of the Memorial, Matt Anderson, revealed the installations were inspired by the familiar words from the acclaimed Ode of Remembrance – ‘At the going
down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.’
“This special glasswork is an ode to the personal and collective sacrifces the Memorial commemorates,” Mr Anderson said.
‘Places of Pride,’ a multi-media display of Memorials from around the nation from villages to capital cities connects visitors to the diverse ways communities across Australia have fulflled the national pledge “We Will Remember Them, Lest We Forget.”
A 250-seat theatre, gift shop and function spaces complete the redevelopment.
Getting to the Main Entrance: from the east is via Poppy’s Café, from the west, stroll up a gently sloping wide path from the Sculpture Gardens. Access is also from the underground carpark, a glass lift or stairs. Open 10 am to 4 pm daily
