THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF FALL PROTECTION: Collective fall protection includes various systems such as nets, fall prevention barriers, and fall arrest equipment. By installing equipment like railings, nets, or other fall prevention systems on roofs, collective fall protection is achieved.

Scaffolds should, as a general rule, be equipped with guardrails that include hand, knee, and toe boards. If the toe board alone is insufficient to prevent objects from falling, the guardrail should be covered with nets or screens.

The distance to the wall should not exceed 0.30 meters.

The guardrail should be at least 1 meter high and be able to withstand the usual loads that apply to guardrails.

Fixed systems include horizontal and vertical installations like tracks and cables. These products are permanently installed on roofs or facades, such as track and cable systems, to ensure safe and efficient movement for service personnel during inspection, maintenance, and similar tasks.

Personal fall protection equipment includes harnesses, shock-absorbing lanyards, safety blocks, and similar equipment. If collective protective devices are not feasible for routine and maintenance work, personal protective equipment can be used. If there is a risk of falling from a height, a fall harness should be used. For restricting access to hazard areas, a safety belt may be used.

All personal fall protection equipment must meet current standards. A prerequisite for using personal fall protection equipment is the existence of an anchoring point. Information about the conditions regarding fall protection devices should be provided by a risk assessment.

HOW TO INSPECT FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT BEFORE USE: 1. Ensure that harnesses and belts fit the user properly.

2. Follow the instructions for information on how to properly don the harness or belt and how to connect them to the rest of the system.

3. Inspect the seams to ensure they are intact and strong.

4. Check all parts of the fall protection equipment for visible damage.

5. Never use damaged equipment! If any damage is discovered, replace or repair the equipment before use.

Authorized personnel should inspect the fall protection equipment at least once a year or after it has been subjected to abnormal stress.

INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE OF FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT: In accordance with the standard EN 365, all fall protection equipment should be inspected annually by a certified and competent person. The results of the inspection should be documented. Annual maintenance and inspection are more thorough and extensive than daily checks. The competent person conducting the inspection should have knowledge of the following: The products, systems, and instructions related to fall protection equipment.

Laws, regulations, and standards applicable to safety equipment and fall protection.

Proper use of the equipment and procedures for inspection and maintenance.

By following these guidelines for the inspection and control of fall protection equipment, you can ensure that the equipment functions as it should and maintains a high level of safety.

A COMPETENT PERSON SHOULD HAVE KNOWLEDGE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: 1. Products, Systems, and Instructions: This person should be familiar with various fall protection products, their functions, how they are used, and the instructions that come with them.

2. Laws, Regulations, and Standards: It is crucial to have knowledge of current laws, regulations, and standards related to fall protection to ensure that the equipment meets the necessary requirements.

3. Use: A competent person should be aware of the correct use of fall protection equipment, including proper dressing, assembly, and connection of the equipment.

4. Risks: Understanding risk factors and potential hazards associated with falls and fall protection is essential for assessing and implementing appropriate safety measures.

5. Inspection: Competent persons should be able to conduct inspections of fall protection equipment to detect any damages, wear, or malfunctions. This helps ensure that the equipment is safe for use.

A competent person must have completed a course and hold a valid certificate from either the manufacturer or one of the manufacturer’s authorized partners.

Follow these recommendations before starting work at heights: Perform as much of the work as possible on the ground.

Place the access point as close to the work area as possible.

Ensure that workers can safely get to and from the work site. Choose stair towers for access.

Ensure that the work equipment for working at heights is suitable, has sufficient stability and strength, is wellmaintained, and is regularly inspected.

Ensure that work equipment is checked before use.

Equipment that is not in order should be taken out of use.

Plan the storage space for the work; the storage area is part of the work area.

Use lifting equipment/cranes for transporting/lifting materials.

Ensure that there is no overloading or excessive stretching.

Pay special attention to fragile or delicate surfaces or covers.

Provide collective protection against falling objects.

Good lighting makes work easier and safer.

A tidy workplace increases safety.

Evaluate procedures and measures for emergency evacuation and rescue operations.

Remember the responsibility for third parties.

REPORTING A FALL ACCIDENT • Call 113 to report an accident.

• Start by introducing yourself.

• Provide the address so that emergency vehicles can arrive quickly.

• Explain what has happened and describe the injuries to the best of your ability.

• Answer any questions from the person you are speaking to on the emergency phone.

• Don't worry if you don't remember everything or are unsure of what to do. The individuals answering the phone are trained in what questions to ask and how to best handle the situation.

ABC of Fall Protection A simple way to remember the components of a fall protection system is to think of "ABC" (Anchorage, Body, Connecting device). In short, the fall protection system is not complete if any of these components is missing. It's important to note that there are different types of products, so it's crucial to ensure that all components are compatible.

A – ANCHORAGE POINT The attachment point for the connecting line must be a secure anchorage point capable of withstanding a minimum of 12 kN (kilinewtons) of force. Existing anchorage points can be found in various structures such as I-beams, scaffolding, or other fixed points. It may be necessary to supplement these anchorage points with a temporary anchor point or anchorage sling.

Fixed Anchorage Point Fixed anchorage points can vary in appearance.

A common indicator of approved fixed anchorage points is that they should always be marked with EN 795. It is essential to verify that the anchorage point is labeled with the correct standard. These points should undergo inspection at least once a year.

Anchor slings Anchor slings can also be used as anchorage points. These slings should be approved in accordance with EN 795.

B – BODY HARNESS The purpose of the harness is to secure the body safely. There are different types of harnesses, and below we describe which type of harness is suitable for various tasks: 1. Chest harness (EN 333): Used for fall arrest and fall restraint.

2. Chest harness with a belt (EN 361/EN 358): Used for fall arrest, fall restraint, and as support equipment.

3. Multi-function chest harness (EN 361/EN 358/EN 813): Used for fall arrest, fall restraint, support equipment, rope work, and rescue operations.

C – CONNECTING LINE The connecting line is the one that links you to the anchorage point. A shock absorber is responsible for limiting the force exerted on the body to a maximum of 6 kN. The connecting line is used between the harness and the anchorage point.

Here are some types of connecting lines and their functions: 1. Fall arrest lanyard: It has a maximum length of 2 meters and is equipped with a shock absorber.

2. Self-retracting lifeline: It has a selfretracting line and an integrated shock absorber.

3. Fall restraint lanyard: It is used for fall arrest and can be either manual or automatic with a rope lock and energyabsorbing function.

4. Restraint lanyard: It should only be used as a fall restraint. In situations where the user is exposed to the risk of falling, the restraint lanyard must be used in conjunction with one of the other connecting lines.

THE USER'S DAILY INSPECTION OF THEIR ABC SYSTEM. To prevent accidents, a visual inspection of the anchorage point, body harness, and connecting line must be performed before use. Here are some elements to check: 1. Check the labeling: Ensure that the product is within an acceptable age and has been inspected within the last year.

2. Inspect the webbing: Look for any damage and ensure it is clean and in good condition. Pay special attention to edge damage on the webbing.

3. Check the buckle: Verify that the buckle functions correctly and is in good condition.

4. Inspect the attachment point: Ensure that the attachment point is intact and free from signs of wear or damage.

5. Examine other metal components: Look for abnormal wear, corrosion, or deformations on other metal parts present. These checks will help ensure that the equipment is in good condition and ready for use.
