Welcome Letter Kim Spangenberg Chief Executive Officer, DASI Welcome to DASI’s Gala, A Prom through the Ages! I am so glad to gather with you in-person to support survivors of domestic and sexual violence and human trafficking. What a couple of years it has been! Although we gather today in person, we are aware of COVID-19 and the pandemic that won’t let us forget that a threat still lingers. At the height of the pandemic, there were increased concerns that the pandemic had created a “perfect storm” for domestic violence. The CDC said in its guidelines that social distancing measures increased the risk of abuse and negative impacts for those experiencing domestic violence. We witnessed this at DASI with increased hotline calls, requests for safe housing and counseling, increased domestic violence response team calls and requests for legal advocacy services, and increased referrals to DECIDE for men who cause harm to their partners/families. The pandemic also provided another layer of stress, causing us to see more survivors suffering from complex trauma, increased mental health difficulties, and substance use. Throughout the pandemic, the safe house and transitional housing programs continued services with extra health and safety precautions. Due to additional funding through the pandemic, when the safehouse and transitional living facilities became full, DASI was able to house survivors in motels and hotels throughout the State while still providing them with case management and counseling services. We are still serving record-breaking numbers of victims and survivors in our domestic violence programs. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we learned of enhanced ways to provide services to survivors. In addition to in-person counseling services, we are now providing remote counseling services via HIPPA compliant online software, eliminating transportation and childcare barriers for some survivors. We incorporated additional counseling modalities into our work with survivors, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), to provide them with more tools to deal with complex trauma. Now we are working on adding more holistic modalities such as poetry and prose, trauma-informed yoga, and art therapy. I would like to especially thank DASI’s Staff, Board, and Volunteers. I appreciate that you used all of your experience, skills, knowledge, and education to move our organization forward. We cannot do this work alone…we appreciate you! Have a wonderful evening!

A Letter From our Board President
Jennifer Cable President, DASI Board of Trustees As I reflect on the past year for DASI, I have a renewed sense of optimism and hope for the organization’s future. As in many of our personal lives, the past two years have challenged old assumptions and led to new ways of working and operating during the ongoing pandemic. For DASI, this opened our organization and staff up to new ways of meeting our clients’ needs while ensuring our organization’s lasting financial future. We sold our beloved, historic but high-maintenance Outreach Building and rented a new, cost-effective space instead. 2020 lead to new ways of working and serving clients. Many of our counselors and staff continue to meet with clients remotely, giving our clients increased flexibility and eliminating concerns about transportation and childcare while reducing our need for physical office space. 2020 also opened many of our eyes to the ongoing need for sustained racial justice and other equity work when working with survivors. DASI now has a sustained initiative to integrate Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging into all our work and has worked these essential concepts into our organizational mission and values. None of the work accomplished at DASI could happen without our incredible and tireless team – please join me in thanking every staff member, counselor, advocate, and volunteer. Their determination and commitment ensures that survivors have a safe place to call home, someone to listen to them, and a community that welcomes and celebrates them for all they are. An effective and impactful team is impossible without a strong and dynamic leader. In addition to her work leading, growing, and developing her team, in Kim Spangenberg’s first full fiscal year as CEO of DASI, we have increased our cash reserves due to her innovative management and the successful sale of the Outreach Building. In fact, this year has been our most successful financial performance in my tenure as President of the Board! We have also welcomed new board members who bring dynamic perspectives and unique strengths to our organization. Despite our successes here at DASI, there is an ongoing, unmet need in the community for our services – our waiting list for lifesaving and transformative counseling services has only grown in the past two years. Our safe house shelter and transitional housing have been fully occupied for months at a time. While we have been fortunate enough to temporarily receive funding to place clients who are no longer safe at home in local motels, this funding has been discontinued by the state agencies. We need your support now, more than ever, to continue our vital work. Thank you all for the work, advocacy, and financial support you provide to help victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and human trafficking in Sussex County. I see that the need for these services is greater than ever, but I know we can change lives together. 5

– Thorlabs –
2022 Corporate Partner ºThorlabs was founded in 1989 by owner and CEO, Alex Cable. Dedicated to the mission “we transform the world by identifying, enabling, and accelerating key photonics technologies”, the company has grown from a small optomechanics supplier to a “one-stop shop” for researchers, graduate students, and scientists in the photonics and life science industries. Thorlabs now designs, develops, and manufactures over 20,000 products ranging from components to system-level solutions, covering optics, fiber, optoelectronics, motion control, microscopy, and other imaging systems. Employing 2,400 people globally, the company has offices in Japan, China, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Brazil, and six locations in the United States – including the company headquarters in Newton, NJ. The leadership at Thorlabs understands that a global reach means a responsibility to care for not just its employees and customers, but also all communities in which it is embedded. To this end, Thorlabs strives to give back through event sponsorships, in-kind donations to schools and universities, and volunteerism. In 2018, Thorlabs launched a volunteer paid time off program, giving each US employee 8 hours to give back to their communities. In one year, employees dedicated nearly 700 hours at 15 different 8
locations (including DASI!) – and they are eager to return to this program now that the pandemic has abated. Thorlabs is proud to support organizations like DASI who help create and foster healthy, safe communities for all.

2022 Corporate Partner of the Year
Jennifer Cable, President, Thorlabs Inc., answers our questions on Thorlabs love for DASI
Q
: What does it mean to you to receive the
corporate partner award for Thorlabs for your dedication to DASI?
A
: Thorlabs has been a quiet community partner for many years but accepting this honor from DASI highlights our public support for survivors of domestic violence and helps to draw attention to the need in our own community.
Q
: With all of your charitable endeavors,
what is a lesson that you have learned that you would like to share with others?
A
Honestly, helping other people makes YOU feel good. It’s the right thing to do and it’s incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. Even a small donation or a few hours of volunteer time can feed your spirit and give back to your community truly a win-win! :
Q
: What motivates you to support
DASI and the victims / survivors that they serve? What do you find most rewarding?
A
I meet so many people who have lost loved ones to intimate partner violence or who themselves are survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault - when you normalize :
9
talking about these issues, you realize the need, even in our own community, is enormous. Survivors are so relieved to learn they’re not alone, and that they have so many people who care about them and want them to live peacefully and without fear. On a personal note, I have had two close family members who dealt with domestic violence - even for people with resources, it’s so difficult to leave an abusive relationship. Seeing people I love deal with this issue inspired me to take action.
Q
: Is there anything else that you would
like to share with those reading this Q&A?
A
: Being an ally to someone experiencing domestic or sexual violence is an incredible act of kindness and generosity. Try to support the people in your life with openness and free from judgment and people will open up to you. Survivors need to hear that they’re not alone and that their community wants them to flourish.

Richard D. Pompelio, Esq New Jersey Crime Victims’ Law Center
Q
: What does it mean to you to be honored
A
at this year’s gala for your dedication to DASI?
:: DASI and I go back go back many years. My wife, Ann, and I established the New Jersey Crime Victims’ Law Center (NJCVLC) in 1992 as the first crime victim law center in the nation to provide pro bono legal assistance to victims of all violent crimes. After 30 years and over 30,000 victims, we have served, I am proud to say that we remain as one of the leaders in the United States in providing direct legal services to victims of violence at no cost. My first encounter with DASI was in 1994 when I was asked to assist in a conflict between DASI and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office over an issue of victim protection. I learned then, and it has been confirmed to me many times thereafter, that DASI is a formidable and passionate advocate for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Like ours, it is an agency that was built in the trenches and has sustained itself through effort and an uncompromising vision of fairness, compassion, and respect for victims of violent crime.
Q
: With all of your charitable endeavors,
A
what is a lesson you have learned that you would like to share with others?
:: The world is filled with ordinary people. But in every hour of every day, ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things. It’s fairly easy if feelings of love and humility guide you.
Q
: What motivates you to support
DASI and the victims / survivors that they serve? What do you find most rewarding?
A
:: I love working with the advocates at DASI. They are passionate in their desire to protect their victim clients.
10
They subscribe to our mission of healing and survival for victims of violence in a way that makes our efforts less difficult. DASI consists of a cadre of dedicated professionals who do justice to its mission and legacy as one of the finest victim assistance agencies in the state of New Jersey.
Q
: Is there anything else that you would
A
like to share with those reading this Q&A?
:: Most people tend to view violent crime with ambivalence. While street crime may routinely anger them, they have no difficulty endorsing violence in the entertainment they and their children enjoy. But in real life, violence and its effects cannot be turned off and forgotten so easily as flicking the remote control to a TV. In the United States, every 90 seconds, a woman is victimized by domestic violence, and every 23 minutes, someone is murdered, leaving behind many survivors. They become victims from the moment of the crime and each day for the remainder of their lives. The pain, sorrow, and loss of joy they experience become the controlling aspects of their life sentence. The people working in the criminal justice system often do their best to avoid a revictimization by the system, but the ineffective governmental bureaucracy exacerbated by the Covid pandemic has made life more difficult for victims of violent crime.
Victims’ Rights began over three decades ago as a grassroots movement in New Jersey and throughout the nation. It came about because somewhere along the way, the justice process focused on the lawyers, judges, and defendants, treating crime victims with institutionalized disinterest. If this nation continues to deny equal justice to crime victims, then the dream of fair treatment for all this nation two and a half centuries ago may become nothing more than an empty promise. However, DASI and the New Jersey Crime Victims Law Center will continue our work in the trenches with the same passion and determination as we have always had. And that’s a positive thought.
– Richard D. Pompelio, Esq –
2022 Community Partner The New Jersey Crime Victims’ Law Center (NJCVLC) provides pro bono legal assistance to victims of all violent crimes. NJCVLC was established in 1991 by Ann and Richard Pompelio after the murder of their 17-year-old son, Tony where they experienced firsthand the harsh treatment of crime victims in the criminal justice process. In 1989, Ann and Richard became a part of the grassroots movement to establish rights for crime victims in New Jersey. As a result of their efforts and those of other survivors of homicide, the New Jersey Constitution was amended in 1991 to mandate “fairness, compassion, and respect” for all crime victims. It was the first civil rights amendment to the New Jersey Constitution since 1844. NJCVLC was the first of its kind in the nation and its model has since been utilized in numerous other states over the past 30 years as the national crime victims’ movement has continued to expand and provide assistance to victims of violence throughout the nation. NJCVLC represents victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, homicide, and all other violent crimes in the protection of their civil rights. NJCVLC describes its services as “holistic” because in addition to legal representation, it serves the broad spectrum of personal, financial, and emotional issues that victim-survivors encounter, often collaborating with organizations such as DASI to best serve the needs of crime victims. Richard has authored much of the victims’ rights legislation in New Jersey over 11
the past 30 years, and with the efforts of the State Legislature New Jersey has established one of the strongest Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights in the nation. NJCVLC has been honored twice on the floor by the New Jersey Senate as well as receiving many state and national awards for its service to victims and victims’ rights, including the first American Bar Association’s first national award for crime victim advocate of the year. Richard and Ann are currently celebrating their 50th and 25th years as lawyers respectively. They love the law and the opportunity it offers to help others in their right to receive equal justice. NJCVLC is dedicated to the life and memory of Tony Pompelio.

Rich: The man who has given everything of himself and asked for nothing in return. We thank you and honor you for fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves. Not only do you fight for the forgotten, but you fight for them even when no one is watching. It is such a pleasure and honor knowing you and working with you; words cannot describe how proud we are even to be associated with you, Sir. To the many children and victims in our great state, you are genuinely a real-life superhero. Thank you for doing all you do every day and for allowing us the opportunity to do what we love, helping those who need it most. ~ Thomas
