DARWIN Darwin is the largest city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, with a population of only 136,245. As the only tropical capital City in Australia, it is also the smallest and most northerly of the Austaralian capital cities, and acts as the Top End’s regional centre. Darwin has plenty to offer the traveller. Chairs and tables spill out of street-side restaurants and bars, innovative museums celebrate the city’s past, and galleries showcase the region’s rich indigenous art. Darwin’s cosmopolitan mix − more than 50 nationalities are seamlessly represented here − is typified by the wonderful markets held throughout the dry season. Enjoy Darwin’s balmy weather and eclectic food and culture at outdoor festivals, waterfront restaurants, tropical parklands and art precincts. Get a taste of Darwin at Mindil Beach Markets, sail Darwin Harbour and trace the region’s dramatic history at museums. Nature is well and truly part of Darwin’s backyard and is the gateway to the Litchfield National Park, Kakadu and Arnhem Land that are only a few hours drive away, and lets not forget the unique Tiwi Islands that are a boat-ride away. For locals the perfect weekend is going fishing for barra in a tinny (small boat) with an esky full of cold beer.

SEASONS Eight thousand years of annual monsoon cycles dictate the Top End’s swing between wet and dry seasons. Referred to as the ‘wet’ season, the months inclusive of November to April are characterised by increased humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The Indigenous inhabitants of this region characterise the wet season by the changes in seasonal fruit and flowers, lush greenery and flowing water, with the weather greatly influencing their campsites and traditional food sourcing. The ‘dry’ season, between May and October, provided opportunity for the nomadic Indigenous communities to move freely and partake in ceremonial activities. The biting cold of the Central regions during this season sees the mercury drop below zero degrees through the evening. The changing of the seasons in October sees an increase of wildlife within the region with animals breeding, the emergence of hibernating reptiles and an increase of native fauna looking for the fresh fruit and seeds provided by the incoming wet season. 18 N T LIFE

FESTIVAL

4-21 AUGUST, 2016 VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS DARWIN

Darwin’s annual arts festival is like no other in Australia. Defined by the North’s Indigenous cultures and proximity to South East Asia it is an arts festival as unique as the city itself. Darwin Festival combines the local love of outdoor community festivities and dining with an adventurous program of Australian and international performances and exhibitions. Here Indigenous artists and artists from Darwin’s Asian and Pacific neighbours take centre stage. Music, theatre, exhibitions, concerts, ideas and the irrepressible Festival Lounge along with the ubiquitous bamboo food stalls, pop-up bars and the Festival’s own tropical open air big top The Lighthouse transform the city for the last precious weeks of every dry season. Festival goers can be seen for 18 nights each August at the long communal tables in the festooned Festival Park eating Darwin’s legendary multicultural food and arguing about who has seen the most shows. A festival that started nearly half a century ago with a parade of floats down the main street has grown along with the city. Nowadays the Festival boasts top international acts from the popular to the avant-garde and from the family friendly to the confronting, but it hasn’t lost its quintessential Darwin feeling of a relaxed, friendly, community celebration. Darwin is a city full of unheralded wonders and surprises, and the time to encounter those wonders and to be surprised by this intriguing and welcoming tropical city is when it comes out onto the streets and makes an arts and cultural festival like no other. Early in 2016 Darwin Festival will announce the highlights of a Festival that promises to take its audiences on new and surprising journeys.

AVIATION HERITAGE CENTRE

The original museum, first opened to the public in 1988 on a pre WWII Navy victualing yard building leased from the NT Government and is now used by the Society as a storage and restoration facility. Negotiations were carried out for some time between the Society, the United States Air Force & the Northern Territory Government to obtain a Boeing B-52 bomber and to build a museum to house and display it. This was achieved in June 1990 when the new Darwin Aviation Museum was officially opened with a fully

refurbished B-52G bomber on permanent loan from the USAF. This is only 1 of 2 B-52 bombers to be available on display anywhere in the world outside of the USA. The name was changed in September 1994 to the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, which placed more emphasis on the pioneering men and women who since 1919 have helped in the development of the Northern Territory through aviation. There are 19 aircraft on display, as well as 38 major displays, relics of crashed aircraft, and 21 engines.

The exhibitions are being continually updated by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers of the Aviation Heritage Society of the Northern Territory, a non-profit association. Aircraft include a B-25 Mitchell Bomber – one of the few surviving in the world with a proven track record. There are Mirage and Sabre jet fighters, and a Royal Australian Navy Wessex helicopter that assisted in the clean-up of Darwin after Cyclone Tracy struck on Christmas Day 1974. The latest acquisition is an F-111C which arrived by road from Amberley on 16 June 2013.

WORLD WAR TWO HISTORY After direct attacks from more than 64 Japanese air raids in 1942, Darwin has a devastating history as the first mainland site in Australia involved in World War Two (WWII). The military heritage of the Top End is well preserved within the Northern Territory. While devastation and casualties rolled through the region, the strategic defence that Darwin played during the attacks prevented further attacks on Australian soil. The Darwin Military Museum, open daily at East Point, displays many of the restored pieces used throughout the war period. Extensive displays of military firearms, artillery pieces and detailed historical records showcase the extent of Darwin’s involvement and the positive repercussions of the Armed Forces actions. Many of the original military pieces and landmarks can be found scattered throughout the city, including oil storage tunnels, gun turrets, bunkers and lookout posts. Locals and visitors are drawn to the city on the 19th of February each year to attend ‘Bombing of Darwin’ day commemorative services, acknowledging the sacrifice made by those who lost their lives and maintaining the memory of this dark chapter in Australia’s history.

Swapping farming life in South Australia for a country pub in the Top End was never the plan for Tony Innes.

FROM THE FARM TO THE PUB NOONAMAH TAVERN AND RODEO

But it’s exactly what happened when he and his family sold their property down south to start a new farming venture in the Territory. “When we were moving up here I literally drove past and saw the for sale sign, got some information on it and took the brochure to a family meeting and said ‘why don’t we do this?’ Even then it was only going to be for a few years – a chance to raise some cash for a farming property down the track. Tony has now been at the Noonamah Tavern for the past 10 years, steadily growing the business while retaining its original country charm. “In those three years I realised selling beer was a lot more profitable than farming,” Tony laughs. “But it’s a total lifestyle change as well.” The family’s development of the Noonamah Tourist Park followed in 2010, and is now owned and operated by Janina, Tony’s former wife. The Tavern and Park complement each other perfectly and continue to operate as a successful partnership. Recent additions to the Noonamah Tavern include live entertainment on Friday nights, Sunday sessions and special meal deals at the restaurant as well as the popular Facebook page to keep everyone in the loop. That’s all on top of the highly successful Noonamah Tavern Rodeos. The rodeo series draws some of the best bronc and bull riders from across Australia, with events pulling in crowds up to 2000 strong every six weeks between May and October. “There’s always good prize money on offer and we get fairly good numbers so it’s got quite a good reputation interstate,” says Tony. “Coming from a rural background I was quite interested in it from the start and we’ve made it into a really unique and large event.” Rodeo co-ordinator Dallis Wilschefski says the tavern is an ideal venue for the events, with high profile positioning drawing large crowds, and up to $5000 in prize money bringing in top riders from across the country. And the incentives continue to build, with this year’s overall winner set to travel to the United States to compete at an international level. “I found Tony and his family to be really decent people and good to work with, and the spot gives us great exposure,” says Dallis. “We bought the yards from the United States so the quality is the best in the world. We have a small arena so everyone is close to the action and it works well.” Also unique to the venue are the Noonamah Tavern Frog Races. Held every Melbourne 40 N T LIFE

Cup Day since the 1970s, the green tree frog race draws hundreds of punters to the pub to raise money for charity. The 2014 event raised in excess of $20,000 in a single day – just one of many reasons behind the tavern’s success at the Australian Hotels Association Awards last year, taking home the Outstanding Community Service award. “People here will do anything for a good cause, we’ve always seen that through the support at the pub, there’s a lot of loyalty,” says Tony. Initially concerned about how a change of ownership may be received, Tony says he was pleasantly surprised to find himself and the whole family well settled and accepted by the local community within just 12 months of taking over the pub. “Again I think coming from a farming and rural background helped us relate to the people,” he says. “We always have great local support and we’re grateful for that.” Tony initially ran the pub in partnership with his then wife, and his parents, who now split their time between the Territory and helping Tony’s brother and sister in law in South Australia. The business is now operated with the support of a tight-knit team, including core management staff who’ve been with the tavern for up to six years. “Darwin traditionally has a very transient workforce, particularly in hospitality, so it’s of incredible value to the business to have such long serving staff,” Tony admits.

“They know how it works, what makes it tick. Staff and customer service are by far the most important part of our business.”

NT FISHING Fishing in the Northern Territory is excellent all year round; and while the Barramundi are most active from March to May, anglers can fish successfully at any time for a range of species. The northern regions of the Territory are also home to an array reef fish, including giant trevally (GT), queenfish, spanish mackerel, cobia, black jewfish, golden snapper, red emperor, coral trout and marlin and sailfish. You can hire a boat or bring your own, take a fully guided fishing safari, stay art a remote fishing lodge or charter a mothership – every type of angler and every type of fishing experience is catered for in the Northern Territory. There are international fishing operators who only use the Northern Territory for Australian fishing, which is a testament to the quality. The Northern Territory is the perfect fishing destination because due to its close proximity, keen anglers can experience a real challenge while others in the travelling party can relax and enjoy the attractions of the mainland. 44 N T LIFE

BEER CAN REGATTA Now a 43 year old tradition, the Lions Beer Can Regatta draws thousands of spectators to Mindil Beach every July. Resourcefulness and ingenuity are on display at the annual Beer Can Regatta. Primarily made from aluminium cans with the addition of plastic soft drink bottles and cartons, participants race their boats, measuring from 1 to 12 metres long through ‘The Battle of Mindil’. Competitors fit their dinghys, kayaks, cruise liners and yachts with makeshift weaponry ranging from fire hoses to flour bombs to ensure their victory. The winner is the team that locates an underwater item hidden somewhere through the course. Thrills, spills, hilarity and hijinks ensue as teams battle it out for the glory of ‘Beer Can Boat Builder’ champion. Conceived in 1974 as a means to combat litter in the area, the Lions’ committee has grown this event into an annual spectacular. From humble beginnings as a singular race, the event now hosts four different categories, market stalls and on-land activities. Families can band together for tug-of- war competitions and beach races as well as the ever-popular thong-throwing competition. Sporty types can display their golfing prowess with a hole-in-one challenge, attempting to land a golf ball into a bucket-toting dinghy 70 metres off shore. As far as spectator sports go, this is one event not to miss when you are in Darwin! 46 N T LIFE

The Glenti consists of local and interstate entertainment and acts. You can see people wearing traditional Greek clothing, listen to Greek music, experience traditional dancing and perhaps even smash a plate or two. The event aims to share what the Greek culture and lifestyle is all about with the wider population, while creating a family friendly weekend for all.

GEORGE BROWN DARWIN BOTANIC GARDENS Walking through the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, it is difficult to imagine that a mere 40 years ago, what now stands as hectares on hectares of visual imagery, was then almost entirely destroyed in the wake of Cyclone Tracy. Just 2km from the Darwin CBD and within walking distance from the Skycity Casino, the Gardens are a lasting impression of the vision George Brown planted when he led the restoration following Tracy. Now operated by Friends of the Darwin Botanic Gardens, the site was initially established to introduce and test plants of economic importance for suitability in the harsh tropical climate of the new city. Today the Botanic Gardens hosts a spectacular display of specimens. Set aside a full day to explore Australian and exotic cycads, 450 palm species and admire all eight species of Adansonia (the Baobab tree). Delve through the magical Rainforest Gully before a sojourn at the Plant Display House which homes tropical plants such as orchids, begonias, episcias, and bromeliads. The lush, tropical backdrop glitters with accents of striking desert roses, vivid tropical gingers and brilliant heliconias. The picturesque setting accommodates visitors with landscaped lawns and vast open spaces used year-round for community events and functions. The Amphitheatre is home to Darwin’s finest musical displays and theatrical acts, hosting many of the unique performances associated with the annual Darwin Festival. Eva’s Botanical Garden’s Cafe now offers organic & fairtrade coffee and fresh food, alternatively, visitors can utilise the barbecue facilities and shaded seating areas nestled beside a world class children’s playground (generously, dogs can also be walked unrestrained). The historic and enchanting George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens are truly an unmissable festival for the senses. Garden gates are open between 7am - 7pm. Ideally located on Mitchell Street, Monsoons offers a contemporary and relaxed daytime setting as well as an evening party atmosphere to rival Australia’s finest. With an already celebrated reputation as the place to be on any night of the week, Monsoons is now redefining their approach to pub food; serving high class meals without the exclusive status. Since opening its doors in 1998, Monsoons has grown with the Territory and established itself as the place for corporate events, lunchtime catch ups, after work drinks and award winning nightlife. Since welcoming chef Andy Wixted to the business, Monsoons has now added a worldclass menu to its host of offerings. According to Andy, it is a mix of rustic pub meals and a seasonal Top End approach that has locals and visitors raving about the menu. “We have taken the concept of ordinary pub food and redeveloped it to create a fresh new style. It is food that is expertly

cooked and well presented, more like a rustic home-cooked meal served with a twist. At Monsoons, we don’t do things by halves. Just because we offer a $15 lunch special, doesn’t mean we compromise on the size or the quality” Sourcing only the freshest ingredients with a focus on local produce, Andy is passionate about food. “We make our own breads, cut our own meat and source as much as we can locally. We deal directly with our local butcher and fresh produce supplier so that means our dishes are cooked with on-season ingredients. We keep it affordable but ensure that we bring quality to every dish we serve” With options such as Mediterranean style tapas, lemon-pepper Barra and mouthwatering steaks, pub food has never tasted so good. Coupled with a sense of pride in what they deliver, it’s not hard to see why Monsoons is a local success story. “Without our team, our success wouldn’t be possible. Our staff all understand our vision 81 N T LIFE

of what we want Monsoons to be” says Adriana “Monsoons is all about hospitality. Whether our patrons are here enjoying a cocktail or a wine from our extensive wine list, or tapas with friends, our priority is to ensure that everyone leaves Monsoons feeling like they want to return again and again” Fitting in perfectly with the Top End lifestyle and climate, the massive al fresco dining area is ideally built for a sunny afternoon, but more importantly in the wet season the area is fully covered from the elements. With live entertainment seven night a week, it’s not just the cold beer or award winning menu that’s worth stopping for, Monsoons is recognised as Darwin’s entertainment hub with international and interstate acts on the bill alongside resident DJ’s, locals bands and solo artists. If you are looking for quality casual dining, great Top End hospitality or award winning nightlife, do like the locals do and head to Monsoons.

GO ON AN

ADVENTURE

When visiting the Northern Territory, the question is not ‘what should we do?’ but ‘how do we find the time to do it all?’ With so many activities, tours, experiences and attractions on offer, the expanse of unique adventures available to you can be hard to prioritise. For the nature-lover, activities include dolphin and turtle spotting eco-tours in the coastal Top End, swimming with crocs at Crocosaurus Cove, marsupial, dingo and reptile spotting in Kakadu and everything in between. For the daredevils, couples looking for a unique thrill or the families looking to explore, more extreme activities await you in the region. Skydiving over Darwin, hot-air ballooning over Alice Springs, cruising the croc-infested waters of the Adelaide River or helicoptering over Kakadu will get the blood pumping while exhibiting the true beauty and wonder of the Territorian outback. Wildlife parks in the state offer the chance to get up close and personal with many of Australia’s most feared and friendly animals, while fishing charters operate throughout the year showcasing the best angling hotspots. 86 N T LIFE

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

THE OUTBACK WRANGLER MATT WRIGHT O U T B A C K F L OAT P L A N E A DV E N T U R E S

87 N T LIFE

We’ve watched on in awe from the comfort of our lounge rooms as he comes face to face with some of the world’s deadliest creatures. And breathed a collective sigh of relief as he escapes from the hairiest of situations. The Nat Geo Wild program will return to TV screens in the second half of this year, bringing us a second series of adventure documenting what Matt Wright does best. That is, the conservation of crocodiles, collecting croc eggs, relocating salties from highly populated areas, and the occasional run in with other dangerous wildlife along the way. But it’s all in a day’s work for Matt, who says he’s more afraid of some people than deadly snakes or giant crocodiles. “If you don’t understand the animal or you lose your cool, then you’re not in the position to be dealing with that animal,” he says. “When you’re accustomed to their nature and behavioural traits and you can hold your ground, it’s different.” Matt has more experience than most, with his fascination for wild animals spanning more than 30 years. He has fond memories of catching snakes, spiders and scorpions as a child, keeping them in his room and taking them to school, only the species changing as he moved from Papua New Guinea, to Cairns, then South Australia. When he was old enough, he made his way north and fell in love with the never-ending adventure the Territory had to offer. A held-hand camera documented many of his escapades for over six years, until 2009 when Channel Seven filmed him catching a 5.6-metre 850kg crocodile. That moment changed everything. He is now known and loved as the Outback Wrangler all over the world, and has become an icon of the Australian outback. Most recently he’s signed a two year book deal with Penguin.

“I NEVER THOUGHT LIFE WOULD TAKE ME HERE, TO WHAT I’M DOING NOW,” MATT SAYS. “MUSTERING CATTLE AND FLYING CHOPPERS AND CATCHING CROCS, YEAH. BUT BEING A PUBLIC FIGURE IS SOMETHING THAT TAKES SOME GETTING USED TO.”

CROCS IN THE TOP END The Northern Territory is home to the majority of Australia’s saltwater crocodiles. With an increase in crocodile attacks within the Northern Territory, it is vital that visitors heed the warnings provided to them when visiting the area. Swimming only in designated areas, staying five metres away from the waters edge when fishing and ensuring that food has been stored away when camping are all vital to ensure your safety around both saltwater and freshwater crocs. For those looking to witness the sheer size of these not-so gentle giants, the Adelaide River is a 70km drive from the city centre and is perfect for seeing one of these giants jump from the water right next to your boat. Call the jumping crocodile tour to secure your time. If you are feeling a little daring and courageous, ‘The Cage of Death’ at Crocosaurus Cove offers an experience like no other, where you can get up close and personal in the water with one of their hungry crocs. Or, for the faint-hearted travellers out there, the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT offers the opportunity to meet Sweetheart; A five metre long, safely stuffed saltie captured many years ago in Sweets Lagoon, just off the Finnis River.

I’VE SPENT THE LAST 20 YEARS EXPLORING AUSTRALIA’S UNIQUE COUNTRYSIDE, AND THAT IS WHERE MY INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY BEGAN.

107 N T LIFE

The idea that many people will never get to experience what I do, is what inspired me to capture this country at its best, and bring it back to those people in the form of artwork for them to enjoy. I just love the bush itself, the lifestyle, the fresh air, and the colours. Photography makes me stop and enjoy the location I’m in. With Darwin as a base for myself and my wife Julie - I travel to some of the most remote corners of this country, just myself my trusty Toyota and swag - and I love every minute of it. Showcasing the largest range of images from right across the Northern Territory, my recently opened gallery on Knuckey Street has the essence of the bush that I love so much. With corrugated iron roof, old timber and relics collected during my remote travels, it is a must see during your stay in Darwin. Drop in, say G’day and relax while you enjoy the images of my home – the Northern Territory.

Since the late 1980’s, Mbantua Aboriginal Art Gallery has specialized in buying and selling Aboriginal art from the Utopia region of Australia’s Northern Territory. Now, with two established galleries – in Alice Springs and Darwin – Mbantua is recognised worldwide for its ethical commitment and rapport with the hundreds of artists it represents. Mbantua was chosen as the aboriginal art representatives for HRH Prince of Wales’ 2005 Australian tour and continues to work with documentary makers and journalists on Aboriginal life and art. Traversed by the Sandover River, Utopia is as beautiful as it is rugged, providing inspiration for all those who are fortunate enough to be present there. The old culture is very much alive and is conveyed through its artists, most of whom are self-taught. The artistic styles range from traditional to contemporary abstract, providing an incredibly rich and varied representation of the culture of this remarkable area. Mbantua 109 N T LIFE

takes pride in its continuous support of Utopian artists and their communities through art. The walls at Mbantua are adorned with work from some of Australia’s most exciting emerging Aboriginal artists, as well as highly collectable names who continue to make waves nationally and internationally. Famed Utopia artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye represented Australia at the 2015 Venice Biennale, while other artists are frequent finalists in the highly regarded Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAAs). Mbantua Gallery always manages to impress visitors with the diverse range of stunning art on display and its large selection of beautiful Utopian-inspired souvenirs. Visit the cool, calm oasis that is Mbantua to select amongst some of the most beautiful Australian Aboriginal art, knowing that artists and their communities will directly benefit. The friendly staff are happy to help you connect with the perfect piece that will bring a little bit of the Territory right to you.

“My main focus is the Darwin coastline, I love the ocean and our beaches are so different to the rest of Australia; the mangroves, the colours of the rocks, the awesome skies… Each day is different!” Darwin is surrounded by an amazing, unspoilt wilderness - Louise’s passion for photographing the outdoors has led her in to the wonders of Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk amongst other stunning locations. The work of Louise Denton Photography can be viewed around Darwin, including at the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. Louise has a stall there every Thursday and Sunday evening during the dry season. The Louise Denton Photography gallery can also be found in Casuarina Square, an airconditioned retail mall, where she showcases her works from small prints to large centrepieces. All frames are handmade by the artist using Australian-made materials. “I have a wide range of frames available and everything can be custom made to suit your needs. I’m now also offering new high definition Aluminium prints - a high gloss, hi-res print infused on to an aluminium panel. The colours are outstanding!” Darwin is an amazing place for photography - the wet season has the most dramatic light, incredible storms and a beautiful lush landscape. The dry season is best for exploring - there’s so much to see up here and the best part about it is that it’s still relatively untouched. “I really feel so lucky to be living in such a beautiful part of the world; if you want to keep up with my adventures around the region, be sure to ‘like’ @Louise Denton Photography on Facebook!”

BAR Body Bar offer professional massage services to relieve aches and pains, or simply provide you with some much need bliss and relaxation. Body Bar now has 4 convenient locations in Darwin, Casuarina, Palmerston and Katherine and is a proudly local owned and operated business. From students needing relief from the poor posture of studying, to office workers needing to get the blood flowing at the end of a desk bound week, Body bar has a range of massage techniques to suit each individual’s requirements. Deep Tissue Massage (Oil Massage) Deep tissue massage is a style of massage that is designed to get into the connective tissue of the body. Deep tissue massage uses a variety of techniques to deeply penetrate the muscles and fascia, loosening them and releasing tension. Many clients have a more intense experience with a deep tissue massage, but also feel that it is more beneficial, because it addresses deep-seated muscle pains.

Relaxation massage (Oil Massage) This kind of massage is oil based and uses gentle, soft, slow hand and elbow movements that are rhythmic and flowing at the appropriate pressure which you need. The pressure is deeply relaxing, but not painful. Dry massage Dry massage focuses on the meridians, acupressure points and sore spots in order to alleviate muscular pain and joint problems. The benefits of the dry massage also include promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis, enhancing flexibility of joints, and calming your mind. Foot Massage (reflexology) Reflexology works on reflex zones on our feet that correspond to different organs, glands and other areas of the body. By stimulating these special areas, reflexology relieves tension, improves 115 N T LIFE

circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related parts of the body. Hot stone massage Hot stone massage is based on classic massage therapy and the application of heated smooth, flat stones to massage the whole body. These special stones are placed on key points on the body, and also held by massage therapist to scrape, glide and press certain areas of the body. The warmth of stones has a variety of benefits, such as improving circulation, relieving muscular ache, calming the nervous system, and rebalancing the body and mind. For more detailed information about the massage techniques offered and some great healthy living tips check out their website at www.bodybardarwin.com.au.

YOUR SKIN IN THE

tropics

Dermal Essence The glorious climate is one of the best things about a visit to Darwin. But when it comes to our skin, the tropical environment can be not so great. Greater exposure to the sun, higher humidity and increased sweating all strip the skin of essential natural protection, leading to a handful of common skin problems.

Relying on sunscreen as a one size fits all skincare regime in a tropical environment like Darwin’s is fighting a losing battle.

Three big skin issues in the tropics Whether you’ve been in the Top End for five days or five decades, it’s likely you‘ve suffered from at least one of the three main tropical skin issues: 1. redness and inflammation 2. breakouts and problem skin 3. pigmentation and sun damage

Tropical skin care experts Darwin’s Dermal Essence has been neutralising tropical skin problems for 12 years.

I’m OK–I use Sunscreen Sunscreen does partially deflect UV radiation, but no sunscreen is 100% effective in protecting our skin. And as an added bonus, the chemicals in sunscreen actually irritate the skin, causing those unsightly blotches of pigmentation.

Tropical skin experts analyse every face and prescribe treatments to rebuild and re-balance skin issues and make the skin smoother, firmer, clearer and less red. Clients see and feel the difference immediately. Imagine your problems solved Feel a soft, dewy texture every time you touch your skin. Looking in the Mirror and seeing your perfect image is achievable–let us show you how! Rediscover great skin!

DARWIN AND SURROUNDS HEADING SOUTH along the Stuart Highway, travellers can stop at the small townships of Batchelor and Adelaide River. At Adelaide River, you will find the War Cemetery which is Australia’s largest and somber reminder of the Northern Territory’s role in WWII. Board a croc-jumping cruise on the Adelaide River and see massive crocs leap from the water for bait. Next stop, Litchfield National Park, just an hour and a half drive from Darwin, features a myriad of diverse environments including rugged sandstone escarpments, perennial spring-fed streams, monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls and historic ruins. You can spend as little as one day in the park, taking a quick dip in each of the plunge pools and rock holes on the drive through. But to really experience the true beauty of Litchfield, it’s best to camp overnight. Melville and Bathurst Islands, known collectively as the Tiwi Islands, lie 80 kilometers north of Darwin, or an easy day trip from Darwin via boat or light aircraft. The Tiwi people are world famous for their art, extending from traditional forms of paintings on bark and canvas to wood carvings, distinctive silk screened cloth, woven accessories and pottery. There are several art galleries on both Melville and Bathurst Island and you are more than welcome to purchase directly from the artists. The Tiwi Islands are also famous for their love of sports, in particular – Australian Rules Football. The Tiwi Football Grand Final is held in March and is a must-see if you are in the area at the time. 127 N T LIFE

Nestled on the water’s edge, Crab Claw Island Resort is a relaxing escape from the everyday. The complex has elevated cabins connected by walkways through the trees and palm gardens, refreshing swimming pools, an elevated open restaurant with views across the harbour, boat ramp, wildlife and natural beauty galore. Crab Claw Island’s ‘Breezes’ restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a wide selection of tasty, al a carte meals. The fully licensed bar holds a selection of wines, icy cold beers and soft drinks that will quench the thirst and cleanse the pallet of any weary traveller. Lovely ‘outback NT’ experience. Crab Claw is one of those places to just relax and dwindle away time, either fishing or relaxing by

the pool. We stayed here for 6 nights, but could have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly, nothing is a bother. Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway… the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories, the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday fare, highchairs and knives and forks just the right size for little hands. We have two accommodation options to suit families who need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear of the main walkway, approximately 15m from the beach. They are twice the size of our standard

cabins and fitted with a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively ‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage. It has two bedrooms, each with a double and two single beds; a large balcony with a gate, dining table and chairs and BBQ.

KATHERINE Katherine was originally named by the explorer John McDouall Stuart in the late 1800’s after the daughter of one of his expedition sponsors. The area was renamed the Nitmiluk – meaning cicada place in 1989 when traditional owners, the Jawoyn Aboriginal people, gained the title to the land and now, Nitmiluk National Park is a Territorian favourite. The Douglas and Daly Rivers region is located midway between Darwin and Katherine, an easy scenic drive from both destinations. While it’s focal point is the main centre of Katherine, the whole region is known as the Territory’s Playground. The region offers great fishing, hidden natural wonders and a rich indigenous and pioneering history, stretching from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the West Australian border. The Katherine River flows through 13 separate gorges that carve their way through the Arnhem Plateau. You can canoe, cruise and swim between sheer cliffs to the sandy freshwater beaches of the main gorges, and view the ancient Aboriginal rock paintings high on the rock faces. Waterfalls and rock pools are found along over 100 kilometers of walking tracks, beginning at the park’s visitor centre.

NITMILUK (KATHERINE) GORGE Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge has been carved out of the sandstone cliffs that line the Katherine River creating 13 distinct gorges – each with it’s own stunning natural features and landmarks and each steeped in the culture and the local Indigenous people – the Jawoyn. Within the river system, Barramundi and turtles live, and the sandbanks reveal the tracks of freshwater crocodiles. Water buffalo and wild brumbies come down from the plains to the river to drink along with an abundance of birds many of which are unique to this area. Cruising the Gorge system under the soaring sandstone cliffs and past indigenous rock art dating back more than 30,000 years, visitors to Katherine can learn to appreciate the ancient power and majesty of this land. Nitmiluk Gorge and Katherine River are the heart of Katherine, but by no means the only reason to visit. As one of the oldest and largest inland settlements in the Northern Territory, Katherine has a rich and lasting history. It was an integral part of the famous Overland Telegraph and is a major stop on the great rail line that now links north to south. Today, Katherine has a thriving tourism industry, primarily centred around Nitmiluk Gorge but also including the stunning Edith Falls, the old gold mining township of Pine Creek, The Adelaide River War Cemetery and the Cutta Cuttaa Caves Nature park. 138 N T LIFE

ABORIGINAL CULTURE The Territory’s northern reaches encompass a culture rich in artistic heritage. Aboriginal art from the Top end reflects the intimate connection between the people and the land. Venture into the remote art regions of Kakadu, Katherine and Arnhem Land and uncover the technique of transforming creation stories into art. Indigenous festivals are held across the Northern Territory typically between May and October. Communities open their doors, drop their permits and welcome travellers to share their story. Activities include art sales and auctions, traditional music and dance, bush tucker displays and tastings and, sometimes just to add to the excitement, a sporting event. KAKADU World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park is a landscape of contrasts. Beneath waters dotted with lotus flowers, saltwater crocodiles lurk. Jagged peaks of towering escarpments hide pockets of monsoon rainforests. Waterfalls cascade into pools fringed with paperbarks, pandanus and cycads. You can view the spectacular Jim Jim Falls, browse through a natural gallery of ancient Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr or Nourlangie Rock, or explore the scenic Yellow Water, a billabong teeming with wildlife. Around 1,000 different plant species, a quarter of all Australian freshwater fish species, and over one-third of Australian bird species can be found in the Park. Kakadu is shaped by water, being the catchment area for the South Alligator, East Alligator, Katherine, Roper and Daly rivers. From November to May, waterfalls are at their most spectacular and the lowlands are flooded, attracting millions of migratory birds. The unique and diverse avian life in Kakadu includes jacanas, azure kingfishers, cuckoos, rufous owls, magpie geese, jabirus and more. Kakadu National Park is a place of rugged escarpments, lush wetlands and cascading waterfalls covering over 19,000 square kilometres. The Nature’s Way tourism drive is a great way to explore the park, which runs along the Arnhem Highway to Jabiru, then the Kakadu Highway to Pine Creek. At the centre of the park is the small mining township of Jabiru, which offers a range of services and accommodation. Another settlement, Cooinda, also offers accommodation, and is located on the banks of Yellow Water, a billabong teeming with migratory birds, saltwater crocodiles and other wildlife. Cruises on Yellow Water depart daily. A visit to Kakadu is best started at the Bowali Visitors Centre near Jabiru or the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre near Cooinda. 142 N T LIFE

EVENTS AND FUN Alice Springs is known for its unique and sometimes a little bit wacky events. Where else can you see camels racing, cheer on the winners in a boat race up a dry river bed or choose one of 4,000 spectacular beanies to be your very own. Check out our Events Calendar and plan your visit to Alice Springs around one of these unique experiences. You will be sure to have a story or two to share with your friends. Finke Desert Race The Finke Desert Race is Australia’s premier off-road racing event that attracts bike, car and buggy entries from around Australia and overseas. It is a multi-terrain, two day race through the desert country from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) Community and is reputed to be one of the most difficult off road races in one of the most remote places in the world. The Finke, as the event is commonly know, is run along sections of the Old Ghan Railway service track, adjacent to the railway line, along a winding corrugated track,

which snakes through typical outback terrain of red dirt, sand, spinifex, mulga and desert oaks. The Camel Cup While camels may have a reputation as a dedicated ‘ships of the desert’, these magnificent beasts are certainly not short on personality. Racing them can prove a nightmare for riders and handlers but fantastic viewing for spectators. Entertainment is assured, with nine unique races scheduled around the dusty outback track throughout the day. There will be lots of action between races too. Belly dancers, rickshaw races, ‘Kids Kamel Dapers’ hobby camel races, Mr and 150 N T LIFE

Mrs Camel Cup challenges, food stalls and bars add to the carnival atmosphere. Alice Springs Desert Festival The Alice Desert Festival shares the stories, songs and the unique lifestyle of Central Australia’s arid region. Featuring a vibrant program borne out of the desert landscape, they celebrate the dynamic exchange between cultures in the heart of Australia. The festival presents an atmosphere not found anywhere else in Australia, where strong traditional cultures and a vibrant contemporary arts community work together in the presenting an amazing 10 days.

ULURU For both its Aboriginal custodians and the travellers that flock here, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, represents the physical and spiritual heart of Australia. The region encompasses Uluru and Kata-Tjuta, positioned alongside the township of Yulara, Kings Canyon, and the intermittent outback cattle stations. Rising from the broad desert plain in the deep centre of Australia, Uluru is Australia’s most recognisable natural icon. It stands 348 metres high, and, like an iceberg, has most of its bulk below the surface. It is located 440 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. To the west by 40 kilometres of Uluru/Ayers Rock is Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas. This massive pile of rock domes dates back 500 million years. Both Uluru/Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta/The Olgas have great cultural significance for the Anangu traditional landowners, who lead walking tours that inform about the local flora and fauna, bush foods and the Aboriginal Dreamtime stories of the area. 154 N T LIFE
