What do you see as 2015’s strongest interior’s trends?

Port of Darwin WINS

Port of the Year

Darwin is gaining increased recognition for leading the way with the recent announcement that the Darwin Port Corporation won Port of the Year at the 2014 Australian Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards.The prestigious award recognises excellence in port development projects, technical innovation, overall management skills and commercial successes, following a year of major milestones and achievements.

The Darwin Port Corporation’s ability to capitalise on opportunities and strategic advantages has resulted in financial benefits reflected in the increasing before-tax profits recorded over the last four years from $0.758M in 2010/11 to $17M in 2013/14.

Darwin Port Corporation CEO, Terry O’Connor says the Port’s integrated leading-edge technologies are crucial to maximising operational efficiency and productivity, managing increased vessel movements and Port pilotage capabilities to support major projects.

The Northern Territory is also attracting interest from international investors following its elevation to first place in the latest CommSec State of the States quarterly economic report, overtaking Western Australia and scoring top in five out of eight economic indicators.

The Port of Darwin plays a vital role in supporting the growth of numerous industry sectors, through the strategic development of Port infrastructure and services to build capacity for northern Australia’s economic expansion.

Located within one of Australia’s largest natural deep water harbours, the Port of Darwin is strategically positioned in close proximity to important Asian markets and the region’s offshore oil & gas fields.

It is the terminus of the AustralAsia Railway which connects Adelaide to Darwin and the only Port between Townsville and Fremantle with full access to multi-modal transport services.

The Port’s main commercial wharf at East Arm provides 775 metres of flexible multi-user berths capable of handling containers, bulk liquids, live exports, general and heavy lift project cargoes. The wharf features a specialised bulk materials handling facility including a ship loader and rail dump to service the resources industry.

Darwin is Australia’s premier live cattle export port with a record 406,055 head of cattle exported from the Port of Darwin for markets in Asia during 2013/14. This is a 47% increase on the previous year, with Indonesia its largest market, followed by China.

East Arm Wharf is currently operating at around 43% capacity and can expand to cater for growing volumes to meet the needs of new and existing Port users.

Overall vessel traffic has grown by 107% over the last two years and in 2013/14, general and container cargo increased by a record 53% on the previous year. This was primarily driven by the construction of the $34B INPEX facility and the recently opened $110M ASCO operated Darwin Marine Supply Base.

The INPEX Ichthys facility under construction at Bladin Point is Australia’s second largest infrastructure project and Darwin Harbour’s second LNG processing plant, following the construction of the Conoco Phillips plant at Wickham Point in 2006.

Located on 8.55 hectares adjacent to East Arm Wharf, the Darwin Marine Supply Base is Northern Australia’s first support facility dedicated to servicing the growing offshore oil & gas industry and provides a major extension to the Port’s capacity and capability.

“The Corporation’s new Vessel Traffic System (VTS) uses the latest technology and provides significant improvements in the management of vessel traffic and coverage of Darwin harbour. The full integration of the HITT V3000 VTS and KleinPort MIS systems is a world first and places the Port of Darwin at the forefront of the maritime industry to meet projected growth.

Also completed in 2014 was the Corporation’s $3.8M dredging project which effectively mobilised dredging equipment already in the harbour to enhance access to almost 100%, 24/7 through the main channel by increasing depth from 10.1 to 14.0 metres. Wider transit tidal windows improve overall flexibility for Port operations and reduce berth demands. In turn, this delivers increased cargo loading capacity for the Port and improved revenue per shipment for the exporter,” said Terry O’Connor.

With the completion of extensive upgrades at East Arm Wharf, including improved fuel and water services, the Corporation is also moving ahead with ongoing reclamation of a number of water retention ponds to provide additional hardstand, cargo storage and stock pile areas.

Pond F, which is strategically located on East Arm Wharf, will add another 2.5 hectares of prime hardstand area which will include reefer points for cold storage containers and facilities for chilled beef exporters, when fully operational later this year. A further seven hectares will soon be added with the reclamation of Ponds K and C,” Terry O’Connor said.

Essentially, it is that type of concrete that looks like it has pebbles or stones set through it. Exposed aggregate concrete is perfect for driveways, entertaining areas, and pathways but can be used anywhere outdoors.

The aggregates are available in many different colours, and you also have the option of colouring your concrete a contrasting or complementary colour in order to create a huge range of different looks. The aggregates are also available in different sizes. To finish the concrete, any loose or slurred concrete is removed using an acid wash, and then the whole thing is sealed using a special concrete sealer.

Polished Concrete: The surface is polished using progressively finer grinding pads. Existing and new concrete floors

can be polished; on new concrete floors we can add various coloured aggregates and stain to achieve the desired effect. exposed aggregated are achieved by grinding the surface of the concrete slab to remove the cement paste in order to expose the aggregate or stones within the concrete topping mix.

oth a beautiful and emotional experience, parents wave goodbye to their little ones, often for the first time, and children begin discovering a whole new world.

This special transition is taking place in the safe and nurturing environment of La Crèche on the Avenue, a childcare and early learning centre which offers a structured preschool program in the heart of Darwin.

Children are encouraged to learn, play and explore, achieving important milestones like learning to write their own names, recognise numbers and words, extend mathematical and scientific concepts, and develop language, social, fine and gross motor skills.

Following the Early Years Learning Framework national curriculum, children are offered 15 hours of preschool each week, from 9am to noon Monday to Friday.

“There is more structure in the preschool program than in our long day care, and it’s equivalent to the preschool program in schools,” says La Crèche Director Louise de BomfordScott.

“We also have weekly assemblies which parents, friends and extended family are welcome to attend to see their child at work and play in the preschool environment.”

La Creche is fast approaching a major milestone of its own – celebrating its first year of operation in April. In that time, enrolments in the preschool and childcare programs have quickly grown and staff numbers have risen to 33 educators and several support staff.

“La Crèche has grown in leaps and bounds which we are absolutely thrilled about,” says Louise.

“We are growing from strength to strength with increasing enrolments and staff numbers. We have a fantastic dedicated team.”

Located in Darwin’s prestigious The Avenue precinct, La Crèche boasts modern, state-of-theart facilities, small group sizes and customised play areas for individual age groups.

Facilities include large shaded outdoor play areas for developmental activities like bike riding, climbing, building and gardening, as well

as reading, drawing, games and puzzles.

Children’s health and safety is the number one priority at La Crèche, which has a strict egg and nut free policy. All meals are lovingly prepared using fresh produce and cooked on site by experienced kitchen staff.

This winning combination is a dream come true for Louise, whose dedication and commitment has ensured the centre’s success. A respected name in childcare and early childhood education in Northern Territory for more than 20 years, Louise always longed to run her own centre.

Now a mother of four and grandmother of three, Louise had a successful career in nursing prior to her move to childcare.

But the need to spend more time with her young family prompted a change.

“I loved my work, but I would go 24 hours or more without seeing them, I would miss birthdays and Christmas and special events,” she recalls.

“Childcare gave me much more flexibility and I enjoyed it. I’m still so passionate about it and that’s why we’re here today.”

As a young business woman in Darwin, I am incredibly lucky. I have met some of the most amazing people who have started off as clients but quickly become good friends.

Outside of work commitments, I take incredible pride in raising awareness for a number of charities. One that really stands out is Beyond Blue. Last year my husband and a group of his friends grew their beards for 12 months, no mean feat in the heat of Darwin, to raise money and more importantly awareness for this incredible cause.

Being raised in Darwin, the horse racing industry has always been a big part of my life, especially with my family having strong ties within the racing industry. Last year these two passions crossed paths when one of our horse syndicates generously donated 10 per cent of our winnings to Beyond Blue.

Being involved in various racing syndicates has allowed me to meet many different and interesting people. One syndicate in particular is made up of many strong, independent, business women who have mentored me in many aspects of my life. When it boils down to it, our lives are enriched by the people we meet along the way.

As Managing Director of O’Donoghues First National for seven years, Jeremy has volunteered auctioneering services for various events and promotions. With three children at school there are many activities outside of work to keep me busy.

Last year I coached the Port Darwin under-six soccer team which my son played in. It was a rewarding experience watching the kids grow in confidence as their skill level increased.

My daughters play netball, and also participate in cheerleading and several other activities throughout the week and on weekends, so working the hours of a real estate professional means time management is very important.

It was 1994. Local football identity Adrian Moscheni had just returned home to Darwin after a 10 year absence playing football in Adelaide.

He was nearing 30, and decided it was time to turn his hand to a new career. With a background as a carpenter and joiner he felt at home in the building industry, and identified significant growth potential in burgeoning local business, Straitline Blinds.

Buying into the business, Adrian soon grew frustrated by the long waits for customers between ordering and delivery.

“Having to tell people they would have to wait six to eight weeks for a single blind; it pushed me to look heavily into manufacturing.”

Adrian initiated the next chapter – beginning smallscale manufacturing and relocating to a commercial premises.

Within five years he was the sole owner of Straitline Blinds opening a window of opportunity to pursue his greater vision for the company.

“It has really grown incredibly since that time,” he says.

“I guess I had no one to answer to, if I wanted to go down a certain path, I did. You learn from your mistakes, but I was lucky enough to make a lot of decisions in those days that allowed the business to grow and improve, and our ability to manufacture today is quite a large part of that.”

Crucial for Straitline Blinds to move forward was substantial investment in machinery and plant. What felt like a major risk at the time, paid off in the ability to manufacture high quality window furnishings on par with the best in the world.

“There was a lot of hard work involved,” says Adrian.

“You can have the best product in the world but you need the service to go with it. Our service is of a very high quality and our people are central to what we do.”

As with all trends,

popular styles of blinds come and go.

But one that looks set to forge ahead is the market for motorised blinds.

Adrian recognised the potential to locally manufacture ‘the next big thing’ in blinds about 10 years ago.

“The expertise the motor companies are putting into these systems, and the competitiveness of the motorisation industry as a whole, is seeing motorised blinds become more affordable for a wider range of customers,” Adrian says.

“The blinds are just one of the components of a house that can be built into a comprehensive building management system.

“Lighting, cooling and heating are also becoming commonly motorised to centralise the operation of electronics and improve the efficiency of buildings.

“We’ve seen massive growth in this area in multiple storey complexes, government buildings and commercial properties. And it’s an area that’s going to continue growing into the domestic market in the future.”

Straitline Blinds currently manufactures 75 per cent of its total sales, supplying blinds for residential and commercial properties across Darwin through to the most rural and remote outskirts of the Territory and as far as Broome, Kununurra and Halls Creek.

Comments by the Australian Prime Minister, Federal Minister for Industry, and some southern universities have spotlighted the UK based STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) initiatives. A local school, The Essington School Darwin, is also developing a STEM approach to Science and Mathematics education to enhance its programs.

The school has been recognized nationally and internationally for its outstanding educational outcomes, and its innovative programs The Essington School Darwin will be the first school in Australia to fully embrace the STEM philosophy, and to use this program to extend its Science and Mathematics curriculum.

Principal David Cannon said: “The UK Government has long identified STEM education as a major priority at both school and university levels and sees STEM subjects as integral to the UK’s success. In 2014 we sent three teachers to the national UK STEM Centre at the University of York to research their programs and bring back ideas and programs. In 2015 we

STEM Programs have spread to the United States and other leading western countries in recent years. It is increasingly being seen as an educational program designed to prepare primary and secondary students for university study in the four STEM areas.

The sale of a business is generally an incredibly complex process, far more complicated than most simple real estate transactions and involves a multitude of different factors that all need to be taken into consideration to determine an appropriate price. Some of these factors and their consideration are as follows.

Just three years after opening the doors, the Yarrawonga tank manufacturer is increasing its production capabilities and expanding its range to include a greater variety of tank sizes.

It’s an exciting time for the locally-owned business which started at the tail of the Global Financial Crisis. Since opening in 2011, Terracorp Industries has doubled its workforce without compromising on quality or customer service while still maintaining its family-owned feel.

“We take great pride in our products and service to our customers and we try to go the extra mile to ensure we manufacture and supply products that are of the highest standards possible,” says director Daryn Kerr.

“We consistently use a range of quality assurance checks to measure the quality of our products. Our motto is ‘Best Product, Best Service’ and we strive to achieve this with every client.”

Those clients include everyone from rural and residential domestic buyers to pastoral companies, government, industry and local businesses.

“As a business man he gives the same attention to every customer whether they be big business or the mum and dad domestic tank buyer,” reveals office manager Yvonne.

“He believes every product that leaves our yard, regardless of who purchases it, should be of the highest standard and quality Terracorp can produce.”

Daryn says much of the business growth has been fuelled by the rapid expansion of projects in the area like the Inpex Ichthys LNG project and AA Co abattoirs at Livingstone as well as mining projects like the Ranger uranium mine and McArthur River zinc, lead and silver mine.

“I get great satisfaction when people compliment us on either the quality of our products or the service they have received. When we get repeat customers or new clients who have been referred by an existing customer that indicates to me that we are doing our job right,” says Daryn.

All Terracorp Industries products are designed and manufactured on

site at Yarrawonga, including a range of rotationally moulded polyethylene tanks from 550 to 30,000 litres. Suitable for use in many different applications, tanks can be selected from the existing product range or custom designed with a range of colours to choose from.

The company also manufactures waste storage tanks, septic tanks, cartage tanks, spillage bunds, gear covers, tubs and tro ughs.

Daryn and his wife Melissa were providing fencing and watering solutions for pastoral companies for their

business Terracorp NT when the opportunity arose to buy the tankmanufacturing plant.

“I had no previous experience in manufacturing or tank sales. As a matter of fact, I had never been involved in sales at all,” admits Daryn.

“I had an idea that I could utilise the tankmaking business to complement our Terracorp NT business. My idea has been proven right and our sales have exceeded our projected expectations.

“When I go home exhausted at the end of a busy day of sales, meetings, office work, and time spent in the work shed, I know it was the right decision to start up Terracorp Industries.”

An international recruitment company operating on a grassroots level in the Northern Territory is welcoming 2015 with a new name and a new look…

corn Global Recruitment has officially launched its new name, Synaco– a hybrid of the company’s UK origins and global partnership with Synergie.

The multi-award winning group delivers local and international recruitment from over 600 branches across the globe. It is instrumental in placing more than 6500 people into temporary assignments for up to 1000 companies across the world every week.

Also delivering training to more than 1000 individuals each month, Acorn posted a record turnover of-$200 million last financial year.

As founder and managing director Matt Southall explains, it hasn’t always been this way. The business started out relatively small in the UK in 1992, but quickly expanded with the addition of new branches, acquisitions and award wins.

“I started in the recruitment industry in 1985 when it was very much a young emerging market in the UK, fast moving, ever changing and enjoying high margins,” Matt recalls.

people find work was both exciting and satisfying. I also enjoyed the chance to build relationships with clients while servicing their ongoing needs, something totally different to my previous job selling capital equipment.”

Partnering with global recruiter Synergie in 2007, Acorn was launched into the international market. The boost came at a time when it was needed most. The Global Financial Crisis and subsequent UK recession had left employment reeling, but new opportunities were opening abroad in the growing sectors of mining, oil, gas, infrastructure, IT and healthcare.

Acorn’s arrival in Australia followed conversations with an existing Australian client which resulted in 20 skilled tradesmen being transferred to Western Australia from the UK. The first candidates arrived in September 2011 and the initial success prompted Matt and Director of Operations Scott Liddle to visit Australia for further talks.

“The sales activity was predominantly targeted at the blue collar requirements within the mining sector,” Matt recalls.

“The interest generated was incredible with multiple orders received from a variety of clients, for significant volumes of skilled trades required urgently.”

The Australian division of the group, Acorn Global Recruitment was incorporated in 2012, and a head office opened in Adelaide along with the appointment of Director Mike Otty.

A Perth office opened shortly after, followed by the Darwin office in January 2013.

Under its new title, Synaco Global Recruitment will look to expand its acquisitions and provide even greater assistance to industry across Australia.

“The company will continue to evolve its service offerings, ensuring we support our clients’ needs in a proactive fashion to underpin their success and growth,” Matt says.

“We also aim to continuously develop a company culture that makes us an employer of choice for our internal staff and contractors, and uphold our commitment to continuously promote their success, support their weaknesses and provide a career path for one and all.”
