ltimately, a tele-consultation is a real consultation that takes some time. The difference is, it requires pet owners to “poke and prod” their pets at the direction of the vet, so a full and proper examination can occur. Pet owners are asked to squeeze their pet’s tummies, check body temperature and also heart and respiratory rates, to properly see what’s wrong. If need be, i-Vet will triage and help make arrangements for further physical examination or treatment. If the situation isn’t urgent pet owners can book a consultation through Sue’s

website, i-vet.com.au. In emergencies, i-Vet provides an after hours phone number that will immediately connect pet owners with a vet, removing the stress of having to wait until the next morning to book an appointment. Sue partnered with a tech and marketing team in Melbourne and veterinarians across the country, and works from her home office as much as possible balancing business and motherly duties. Sue is proud of her unique service, which helps a niche group of people who have found it difficult in the past to receive

S E R V I C E

the same level of care for furry family members as city-living counterparts. i-Vet allows vets to meet clients and their pets, and to see where they live, play and eat, and the products they use, which is hugely beneficial in providing appropriate treatment. Many Territorians are isolated due to different means – some can’t travel, there is the inconvenience of requiring pet-carriers, and taxis are often reluctant to pick up passengers with animals. Sue’s tele-vet service eliminates these inconveniences, while maintaining face-to-face contact. DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

Leasel Southwick PUBLISHER / DIRECTOR Welcome to the January-June edition of DarwinLife Magazine. Exciting times are afoot in the Top End. Our cover story this edition focuses on the rise of the chic café culture spreading across the city like wildfire. From the CBD to Palmerston, there has never been a better time to indulge your inner coffee loving hipster, with plenty of new and refurbished establishments to explore and discover. We also celebrate our fabulous Mumpreneurs, the mums (and step-mums) blazing a trail in the business and corporate world while juggling the demands of family life. We’ve kept a finger on the pulse in our new suburbs and rural development section, and our real estate pages showcase the latest from the property market.

here’s a heap of exciting things happening around the Territory at the moment, particularly in the Tourism space. Recently, I’ve had a lot to do with other local businesses including Venture North, Paspaley Pearls, Crocosaurus Cove and Remote Adventures NT. It’s awesome to be a part of the collaborations and innovations taking place that are putting the NT on the map. There will be some cracking new products coming on the market in the coming months - think pearl tours, remote fishing and beachfront dining - so watch this space. In the first half of the year Outback Floatplane Adventures (OFA) plan on having

our Finniss River Glamping experience up and running. We’ve built nine platforms featuring Lotus Belle Tents, each equipped with their own outdoor shower. The tents are set amongst the magnetic termite mounds surrounding a large elevated deck where OFA guests can enjoy the sunset and dinner under the stars. Outback Wrangler Season 3 will back on National Geographic towards the end of 2017 and features some epic croc relocations and good laughs with the lads. It showcases the unique Territory landscapes, wildlife, mustering and characters of the outback better than ever before which is always great to share with international audiences.

Honouring our wartime history On 19 February 1942, Darwin was a very different place to what we know today. The attack on Pearl Harbour nine weeks earlier left locals feeling largely exposed and defenceless. Air raid sirens had been going off for weeks, night and day, forcing people to find shelter in slit trenches that were dug around the town. It had only been four days since the Fall of Singapore; a catastrophe for the Allies. Darwinians knew the war was heading their way. And so it was on a sunny Thursday morning, the greatest conflict in our history came to Australia. At 9.58am mainland Australia came under air attack for the first time when Japanese forces mounted the first two air raids on Darwin. On that day, 242 Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using it as a base to contest their new-found victories in SE Asia and their intended invasion of New Guinea. 235 people were killed in the two raids, and more than 400 were wounded. One of the most poignant moments of the first air raid on Darwin was the bombing of the Darwin Post Office, killing the postmaster, his family and six young telegraphists sheltering in a slit trench. Postmaster Hurtle Bald, his wife Alice and daughter Iris, Archibald Halls, Arthur Wellington, Jean and Eileen Mullen, Jennie Stasinowsky and Emily Young were going about their work serving the people of Darwin when they were tragically killed. They were buried in makeshift graves at Kahlin Beach and later interred at the Berrimah War Cemetery. Their final resting place is at the Adelaide River War Cemetery. The site of the old Post Office became the site of the old Legislative Assembly building and subsequently the Northern Territory Parliament House.

A plaque and a remnant of the original building’s wall in the foyer of the entrance to the Northern Territory Library are dedicated to their memory. Those who have experienced war first hand will tell you that you will never forget. Sidney Chin recalls “I raced towards the cliff. I didn’t make the cliff, but instead jumped into a sewage ditch which workmen were still digging. From the ditch I saw the Peary get hit”. Darwin was a war zone that day. Rex Ruwoldt, who served as an Army Machine Gunner, recalls

“trucks were sent around the streets, picking up bodies and stacking them two deep in the back. They dug mass graves down on the beach, digging down to the water level and just stacked them in”. That was just the first day of many. There was panic within Darwin’s remaining civilian population. The evacuation of at least 1066 women and children between December 1941 and February 1942 under government orders was a mammoth task and a traumatic experience for those involved. Weeping women trailed by troubled children had been literally carried to the wharves and put on the waiting ships to be taken south. With most only given 24 hours notice, the Order required all women and children to compulsorily leave the town with no more than “35 pounds of luggage” (about 16 kilograms) and assured everyone that the federal government had made arrangements for “the comfort and welfare of your families in the South.” That would be found to be far from the truth. Wendy James, still living in Darwin, remembers “Protests were useless,

so our angry and stressed mother hurried us down the wharf to the waiting ship with a string bag each and the baby in the pusher.” Joy Davis also recalls “When my mother was given notice that she and I were to go, she refused and didn’t turn up at the appointed place, until Mr Arthur Miller the ARP warden, spoke to Dad saying they would have to arrest her and evacuate her by force. Dad persuaded Mum to go”. The journey south was full of tension, with enemy submarines prowling the coastal waters of Australia. The passengers routinely had to take turns on the weather deck spotting for their periscopes. The ships were overcrowded, under-provisioned, and slow. Conditions in the southern cities were much worse than expected. Joy Davis recalls “The evacuees received no help from the general public in the South, as you would normally expect, because the evacuation of Darwin was not publicised and the general public were not aware of it. There were no comforts nor accommodation, we were on our own; many of us had no money, and certainly no warm clothes or anything else needed to make a home; all we had was one suitcase of summer clothes for the whole family.” In the first attack, Kate bombers from four aircraft carriers bombed the harbour and town. Val dive bombers and Zero fighters then attacked shipping in the harbour, the military and civil aerodromes and various infrastructure. Of the 10 defending American fighters, nine were shot down. The attack ceased after about 25 minutes. Four of the 188 Japanese aircraft were brought down. Flying from aircraft carriers to the north west, Zero fighters had tracked over the Tiwi Islands, and strafed the Bathurst Island runway where a transport aircraft was parked and hitting the radio hut where Father John McGrath of the Sacred Heart Mission was DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

broadcasting a warning of a formation of aircraft heading towards Darwin. On their way back to the carriers, one of the Zero fighters crash landed on Melville Island. Its pilot, Hajime Toyoshima, survived the impact and was later captured by local hunter Matthias Ulungura returning from a hunting expedition. Toyoshima became the first prisoner of war captured on Australian soil. A life-sized bronze statue of Matthias Ulungura was commissioned under The Territory Remembers program to commemorate the contribution of the Tiwi people during WWII. The second raid started at around 11.45am. In total for the two raids 30 aircraft were destroyed, nine ships in the harbour and two outside were sunk and many of the civil and military facilities in Darwin were damaged. The USS Peary was struck by several bombs during the first air raid. On fire, sinking stern first, her crew abandoned ship. The Peary lost 88 officers and men. Lieutenant Herb Kriloff on the bridge of her sister ship, the USS William B Preston, recalls

“Peary was enveloped in a ball of flame. The explosion was blindingly bright, and when you opened your eyes, it took time to adjust so you could see again. Peary had disappeared. A smudge on the surface marked the spot where she was hit”. The USS Peary Memorial in Bicentennial Park consists of a plaque and one of the 4-inch deck guns recovered from the Peary, aimed towards her final resting place in the harbour. The Australian Hospital Ship Manunda was bombed, and hit by machine gun fire; and although badly damaged was not sunk. Jack Barclay, a fourth Mate on the HMAHS Manunda, described the formation of planes coming in, “I thought they were American”, until bombs began falling. Before long ships were sinking and burning. The bomb that hit the Manunda had pierced the roof of the ship’s music room, killing 12 people; including 10 civilians, and injuring 47 others. Sister

44

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

Margaret De Mestre was a nurse on board the HMAHS Manunda, at anchor in the Darwin Harbour near the merchant ship Zealandia and the oil tanker British Motorist when it was hit by shrapnel and then a bomb during the first air attack. The medical and nursing staff quarters were destroyed. Despite the chaos, Manunda continued to treat incoming wounded and staff manned the life boats rescuing injured men from the sea. Jack Barclay described the chaos, “we put a launch down to start rescuing the men from the water; we pulled about 40 men from the water and made about eight trips to and from the Manunda with them; the skin was peeling off some of them like the skin from an apple”. Sister de Mestre later died of shrapnel wounds received to her back and abdomen. She was 26 years old and the first Australian Imperial Force nurse to be killed in action on Australian soil. Sister De Mestre’s significant involvement and sacrifice during WWII is acknowledged by a commemorative chair located at Christ Church Cathedral, Darwin. The next day the Manunda took another 190 wounded from onshore hospitals, before setting sail for Fremantle where she arrived safely; but not before 19 more people had to be buried at sea on the way. Although the first raid on Darwin is now known to most Australians, the tale of the first man to die is not. On 15 February, the P-40E Kittyhawk fighter of 2nd Lt. Buel was one of only two planes that were available for the defense of Northern Australia. Both aircraft were sent to defend an allied convoy under Japanese attack, but only Buel caught up with the fleet. Before he was shot down and plunged to his death, 2nd Lt. Buel alone downed a Japanese bomber and cleared safe passage for the allied ships. His self-sacrifice and valour became an inspiration to all. Buel’s body and his P-40 were never found. The raids kept coming. Bombing became the norm across the Top End. Broome saw 86 people die in early March in the second heaviest death toll for any raid

of the war. The Territory was hammered relentlessly with raiding penetrating as far south as Adelaide River and Katherine. Isolated areas such as Milingimbi were not

lection

spared either. The final raid took place in November 1943, but enemy aircraft reconnaissance of the bomber runways continued until mid-1944. The war moved north through the Pacific Islands, involving eventually millions of military personnel battling each other for supremacy. It was not until mid-1945 it all ended with the Japanese surrender following the A-bomb strikes. The Territory had held the line for Australia. The Bombing of Darwin is to this day the largest single most destructive attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. The Territory Remembers program commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the bombing of Darwin and the Northern Territory’s significant involvement in World War II. On 7 December 2011 the Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia declared 19 February in each year as a National Day of Observance to be known as Bombing of Darwin Day. The recognition of this National Day of Observance ensures that the older generation has the opportunity to pass the baton of remembrance on to younger Australians so they too may understand the place this historic event plays in our lives today and ensure that our nation never forgets the horrors of war and value of peace. That such an attack on Australian soil has never been repeated owes to the courage and sacrifice of our service men and women, past and present, and we will forever honour them.

Traditionally, craft beer is all about small batch brewing and bringing in aromas and flavours with the attention to detail of an artisan. With the Top End so famous for its love of the amber ale in any form, General Manager Tess Petho was surprised and pleased to learn just how popular the specialised craft beer concept was in Darwin. Whether it is limited editions of seasonally-inspired brews including “donut

beer”, coffee stout or standards like Indian Pale Ale, locals have been lapping up the lager since opening day. With the ability to brew 6000 litres or 72 kegs at one time, it’s unlikely this place will ever become Slim Dusty’s famous “pub with no beer”. Although the beer may be the stand-out offering, the Kitchen part of the business is no slouch either. The Six Tanks menu

is designed to share, featuring local produce and flavours unique to the Territory; including ribs, slow-cooked lamb, marinated and smoked pork and beef. You may even find dishes infused with the house specialty - beer! The crowd-pleasing buffalo wings have been the biggest hit in the first few weeks, with punters lining up to try a true taste of the Territory.

ost prominent amongst the bonanza of new cafe venues popping up in Darwin is Nightcliff’s Lucky Bat. Owners Danny Crichton and Justin Schmidt waited a full year for the right location to present itself. “Nightcliff is where we live and our kids go to school so we wanted to keep it local and community focused. The idea was to set up a malleable space where people come to get their coffee and eat, but also to freelance, meet people, promenade and flirt.“ This venue has a few differences that aren’t immediately obvious. A four tonne masonry oven feeds the kitchen with baked goods and provides components for salads and meals. The concept of a wood fired oven with its falling temperature opens up a world of possibilities. Baking, slow cooking, drying and infusing. Importantly Lucky Bat nails the coffee, using Genovese beans from Melbourne, solid and dependable, and they can

rightly claim to be amongst Darwin’s best. All food is cooked fresh on the premises, the menu is Middle Eastern inspired with a local take, including tropical ingredients and creative presentation. Takeaway foods are available, grab a fresh salad or sandwich with your morning coffee and you’ve got lunch covered. If you’re looking for delicious catering you can check out the online sales of cakes, tarts and pies. Pizza Fridays offers Darwin’s best pizza combinations with an outdoor section at the back of the cafe that is like the fabled hanging gardens of babylon, lush and tropical. Thursday Feast Night is an eclectic ensemble of culinary experiences. “We want you to trust us to present a well thought out degustation where we will provide our take on local dishes such as Magpie Geese, fresh-caught fish and other flavours”. With the aim to change the perception of fast food, GYG combines the flavours of Mexico with fresh, quality ingredients. “Fast food doesn’t have to be bad food. All our ingredients are fresh, and we don’t use freezers or microwaves, so that gives an indication of the quality of food we produce,” says Mat. At the only purpose built Drive Thru in the country, Guzman Y Gomez on the corner of Chung Wah Terrace and Lambrick Avenue in Bakewell is open 10 am to 10pm seven days a week, and serves classic Mexican dishes such as soft and hard shell Tacos, Nachos, and Quesadillas, pronounced ‘kee-suh-dee-uh’, also known as the ‘toastie’ of Mexico.

Arguably the most popular dish however is the Classic Burrito, offering a generous combination of fillings hand-wrapped in a fresh, soft tortilla. For those wanting to spice it up, the Enchilada takes the burrito to the next level, topping it with salsa, crema, guacamole, and melted cheese. In keeping with their passion to serve quality food with real flavour, GYG have partnered with FREPA accredited Free Range Chicken, ensuring that all chicken served in their stores is 100% fresh and free range. “We’re trying to fix fast food,” says Mat. With a new Guzman Y Gomez loyalty app that allows customers to pre-order and skip the queue in-store, and a convenient and accessible location, getting great fast food has never been easier, not to mention tastier. According to Mat, he was hooked the first time he tried Guzman Y Gomez on the Gold Coast, and was a long time customer before he became a franchisee.

FEEL BETTER

MEAL PREPPING HAS BECOME VERY POPULAR IN THE LAST FEW YEARS IN AUSTRALIA, AND FORMALLY A TOOL USED BY ATHLETES AND BODYBUILDERS TO GAIN PERFORMANCE AND DROP WEIGHT AND BODY FAT. NOW, IT HAS BECOME AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE TO GAIN THE EDGE IN THE FIGHT FOR A BEAUTIFUL BODY OR TO SIMPLY SHED A FEW KILOS.

The main reason I purchase meals is at the moment work is very busy and I would often miss out on lunch or eat poor quality meals. Having Aussie Meal Prep deliver fresh twice a week means I don’t miss a meal, and what I consume is healthy and the portion size is correct for me. I would recommend Aussie Meal Prep to anyone who feels they are missing out on what they need. Russ

but after many years of eating like this I discovered that my energy levels were really low and I just wasn’t sleeping very well. I also noticed eating food with additives/ chemicals kept me awake and developed intolerances to many foods like dairy, wheat and eggs. These intolerances were so hard to track as their after effects can occur hours after or days after so you never really knew what caused the problem. So, here I was, sleepless nights, low energy levels and didn’t know really how to fix it!

With a busy lifestyle, balancing the running of a business, my health and fitness is of the upmost importance. Aussie Meal Prep has provided me with clean, calorie controlled, portioned meals. My well being, weight loss and training at Crossfit Territory have improved. I would recommend to anyone with a busy lifestyle, goals to lose weight or improve training and performance. Liz A. Having my own business I often don’t have the time to prepare meals. Aussie Meal Prep provides me with a great solution by providing healthy and portion controlled meals and best of all, they taste great! I recommend Aussie Meal Prep to anyone wanting to stay healthy and slim down. Maria I have been interested in keeping fit and my body in shape all my life. I am now 57 and in the best shape I have ever been,

78

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

On Aussie Meal Prep, not only did I lose five kilos, I was enjoying the best quality sleep I had had in years! With better sleep, came more energy and with more energy, came better performances at the gym. I had more energy at work and had more energy period! That was 18 months ago and I still use Aussie Meal Prep to supplement my own cooking. They use only the freshest of ingredients and the menu varied. If I had to do it myself, I wouldn’t get that variation. ELLA, HEAD CHEF thanks to Aussie Meal Prep. Reaching 40 years of age with two kids, I worried about my expanding waistline. I discovered eating salads helped me keep my weight down. I was one of those “no carbs after midday” people

I absolutely recommend Aussie Meal Prep to anybody who has food intolerances and needs a hand in preparing fresh and varied food. Improved sleep and energy levels were an awesome by-product and I have enjoyed the weight loss...so has my husband! Liz W.

MUMPRENEUR ENTREPRENEURS. TREND SE T TERS. TRAIL BLAZERS.

The following feature focuses on the successful and dedicated women who are leading the charge in their chosen professions.... all while juggling the demands of family life. As mumpreneurs there are no sick days, no days in lieu, or time off. It is a role that requires passion, vision, desire and the will to succeed, all while making a difference to the lives of those around them. With celebrated achievements, these ambitious women are juggling motherhood and redefining the way women work today, embracing flexibility, creativity and balance in their lives. They are inspirational role models, not only to their families, but to all of us, and we recognise their contribution to the community.

Leasel

SOUTHWICK

When Leasel Southwick saw a gap in the local publishing market in 2009, she jumped in and established DarwinLife Magazine. “It really was a case of right time, right place. I saw an opportunity and I went for it,” says the publishing entrepreneur. With both Leasel and her husband running their own businesses, the Southwick household is very hands-on, and carry this approach through to the demands of family life. With custody of her step-son in a week on/week off arrangement, Leasel says that school drop off/pick up, after school activities, homework, playtime supervision etc is evenly distributed between the couple. “He actually understands the demands of his dad’s and my work, and when he’s with us he fits in well to our schedule. We all juggle work/ family time somehow. Between us and his mum, it’s a team effort,” she says. With a business that relies on having a budget to reach and a deadline to follow, Leasel stays focused with strict timelines and goals written on her whiteboard, and always trusts her gut instinct when it comes to decision-making. Advising those just starting out in business to be confident and prepared to risk it all, Leasel suggests developing a thick skin and not taking everything to heart. “Listen to others, but believe in yourself. Before DarwinLife I never once thought that I could come up with a different enough idea that would make me a business owner. Seven years on here I am. Women are survivors, and I admire each and every one of us to have the courage to step up and make a go of it.”

Michelle

S T A C P O O L E

As a writer, Michelle Stacpoole loves drama. “Without drama there is no conflict, and without conflict there is no story. Everything I write, whether an article for a magazine, or a scene in a script, has an element of overcoming difficulties. Daily life as a working mum embodies this. I have to overcome around 72 obstacles, both literally and figuratively, before I walk out the door in the morning,” laughs the mother of three. Currently working as a freelance writer for a number of publications around the country, Michelle started writing while on maternity leave with her second child, when she began blogging about parenting and lighter side of motherhood. Eager to turn her writing hobby into her profession, Michelle’s first professional piece was in ABC’s The Drum, quickly followed by feature articles in Mamamia and other online publications, as well as writing content for businesses. Her penchant for publishing honest and relatable pieces, her passion for bringing a voice to social issues, and her filmmaking skills learned while studying at the New York Film Academy have combined to lead Michelle to recently create a production company that focuses on taking quintessential Australian stories to the rest of the world via short documentary format.

“I’ve started assembling a gun team of female directors, editors, presenters, production coordinators from around the world….all with a social conscious and eager to realize a combined vision,” she says. With three small children, a husband that works FIFO, and no family living close-by, life is not without its challenges. Michelle suggests the key to success lies in organization, and relies on a semblance of a routine, a family calendar, and simple things like making school lunches the night before and always having dry shampoo and wet wipes on hand. “As a creative, I feel stifled by regimentation and routine, but as a mother I can’t survive without it. So I’ve had to find a middle ground that enables me the space to create, but still maintain some form of control so that the wheels don’t completely fall off,” she says. In order to succeed in business, Michelle believes that it is important to operate with honesty and integrity, use failure as a learning tool and not something to fear, and trust your instincts and talent. “At the end of the day you need to drive your vision, so you have to believe in it,” she says.

I’m very proud that I gave birth to both my second ‘real’ baby and second ‘digital’ baby at the same time!

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE IT? I am the co-founder of Mums & Co (www.mumsandco.com.au) we’re a member-based online business with a community of thousands of mums in business. My job is to help them connect, be empowered and provide tailored products and benefits to help their business grow. Raising a business and a family at the same time can be like an obstacle course, and having been there, I want to help women navigate this successfully and thrive. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE WORKING FROM HOME AROUND THE DEMANDS OF FAMILY LIFE? I try not to spend time worrying, rather find a way to manage and do things better. I outsource where I can afford to for both the family (anything from cleaning to home delivered groceries, mobile mechanics and massage therapists) and the business (such as recruitment and last minute in home child care one of the benefits of Mums & Co membership). I use a productivity tool called Asana to help me keep my ‘to do list’ in check and I’m practising mindfulness and meditation to help me sort through all the thoughts racing in my mind, relax my body and get clear about the life I am creating. My ‘village’ includes an amazing partner (he’s the primary carer) and extended family and their support gives me time to work on the business.

HOW DO YOU KEEP FOCUSED ON YOUR GOALS? We have a ‘big hairy vision’ which is plastered on our office wall, it serves as a daily reminder and I try to focus on three things each day that move us closer towards that. I speak and listen to a lot of people and have regular check ins with the community of mums in business we serve so that their pain points and preferences are top of mind. Personally I have a coach and mentor to help guide me. I’ve found that both motherhood and business together teaches you to be more organised, more resourceful, and focused. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE STARTING OUT ON A NEW BUSINESS VENTURE? When you start, you don’t know who your market is, how people will respond to what you are selling – so much is unknown. When you run a business and have kids to look after as well, it really takes a certain type of person to do this. But I want to say to all mums who are running a business, or thinking about running one: you can do this. And Mums & Co is here to help you succeed. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST BUSINESS TRIUMPH? I’m very proud that I gave birth to both my second ‘real’ baby and second ‘digital’ baby at the same time!

P R I M M E R

During October 2016 Michelle Ormsby opened Sophrosyne Healing after years working in hospitality and missing out on precious time with her family. Just more than one year later, Michelle uses many methods to heal all kinds of ailments and ages – from young children with bed wetting, teenagers with depression, anxiety to the elderly seeking pain relief. She utilises colour therapy through Energy healing, Reiki, Neurolinguistic programming and Aura Soma (which balances the etheric and physical bodies) to offer her clients hope and help them to heal the wounds of the past. As a mother of five, her childrens’ ages ranging from 29 to 10, Michelle runs her business from home which allows her time to spend with the youngest and to be flexible for her clients. She runs meditation sessions three times weekly and all of her kids use Aura Soma to support the body, mind and soul. How does she do it? Although parenting doesn’t get easier, Michelle says, “I absolutely love offering heart space to others”.

It takes a pretty extraordinary person to transform peoples’ lives – and that is exactly Vania Primmer’s business. Over six years, Vania has helped to transform the lives of more than 1,500 people through the Ultimate Dream Team. Vania specialises in brain coaching, via programs every three to four months that focus on nutrition, exercise and – most importantly – mindset. The Ultimate Dream Team gets results for life by re-wiring new mindset pathways so healthy habits become a natural part of their clients’ lives. The most recent round of Dream Team held 75 clients of all ages, shapes and sizes who all demonstrated brilliant results – some dropping 18 kilos in only six weeks. Vania’s business was born after numerous ups and downs with her own body, when she found herself stacking weight on (sometimes more) after body building competitions. She began learning about the brain and now stays in great shape…even after having babies! As a mother to three, Tiger (17), Miami (seven) and Aaliyah (three and a half months), balance is sometimes difficult. How does she do it? “The mind and body exist in continuum – you can never transform one without the other.”

Having a supportive family really is a key part to my success and drive.

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE IT? My business is an online video production company focusing on Darwin businesses and events. January this year I had been producing nightclub videos for various venues in Darwin for the past 2 years. I wanted to move in a new direction with my skills and always had a dream to pursue a career in TV and acting. I created Hashtag Darwin TVA production that provides advertising of an event, business or product in a more fun, fresh energetic way. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE WORKING FROM HOME AROUND THE DEMANDS OF FAMILY LIFE? Without the love and support of my wonderful Partner Nate, my career would have never flourished. Having a supportive family really is a key part to my success and drive. The long days or nights away, lost moments with the kids can be a struggle, but I have a loving man at home caring for my children, encouraging me and reassuring that all is ok. HOW DO YOU KEEP FOCUSED ON YOUR GOALS? By talking with my partner, he helps keep me focused on why I am doing what I am doing and puts a great

perspective on things. It helps to share my doubts, thoughts and ideas with him so I can clearly figure out where I am going and what my next move is. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE STARTING OUT ON A NEW BUSINESS VENTURE? Don’t listen to people that don’t support your dreams and goals, its wasted energy that can be used on YOU. I know it’s easier said than done, but surround yourself with humans that love you and want you to do what makes you happy. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST BUSINESS TRIUMPH? Starting my online video production company has sprung new relationships with business owners who are well known and successful in Darwin. The greatest triumph is I now work fulltime at Monsoons Party Bar in Promotions and Events, where I utilise my video skills to create online videos as a part of my role. I got the job because of my past work with the venue and the hard work I have shown over the few years in the industry. I now get to do what I love everyday - Be a social butterfly and create art.

Juggling working from home and having a demanding family life can be very tricky at times, especially when there is a lot on. Having a lot of support helps tremendously, especially as a single mum. I have had to learn how to manage my time wisely to make sure that I am able to maintain a good work/life balance. Time management is a key part to staying focused as well as being well organised. However, in my line of work, having a good manager (thank you Rodney Lambert of The Firm Talent Management) to help with some of the items that need done and to remind me of appointments and deadlines is invaluable. The best advice I can give someone starting out is to believe in yourself, be honest with yourself and most importantly always be willing to learn. I honestly feel that my greatest achievement is yet to come as there is so much I want to do and achieve, I think my time as the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Ambassador in 2014 has been the most rewarding. It was a full on learning experience where which helped build my self-confidence and overall presence. Like I mentioned earlier, you must be willing to learn, and during that time I was able to learn so much about myself and the industry as a whole. It was a truly amazing experience.

DR. SUE

SAMUELSSON AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW

100 WOMEN OF INFLUENCE AWARD 2016

D

r Sue Samuelsson with her business and brand coach Jon Michail, Group CEO of Image Group International, attending the AFR Women of Influence 2016 at Sydney Town Hall

“The i-Vet online service saves time and money for our clients and gives them peace of mind that their pets will be looked after by a qualified vet 24/7,” said Dr Sue Samuelsson, Founder and CEO of i-Vet. The innovative idea has seen Dr Sue become an AFR 100 Women of Influence, in the category of Innovation. The award, which is in its fifth year, aims to recognise the quality and impact of women in ten categories, to encourage women in positions of leadership and influence. The categories include: Board/ Management, Public Policy, Diversity, Business Enterprise, Young Leader, Global, Local/Regional, Innovation, Arts, Culture and Sport, and Social Enterprise/Not-forprofit. Entrants were assessed by a panel of well regarded judges and have been recognised based on their display of innovation, vision, leadership and action in their field.

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

ABOUT I-VET Dr Sue Samuelsson’s disruptive televeterinary service i-Vet is providing care and peace of mind for geographically remote pet owners, and those isolated by disability. i-Vet, an innovative online veterinary consultation service provides exceptional, real time access to a vet in times of need, and addresses the difficulties that face isolated communities. According to Dr Sue, the service, which will soon be aided by the use of phone apps to track heart and lung sounds is shaking up the Veterinary world by “altering the way pet owners buy a range of veterinary and care services, especially for clients without easy physical access”. Isolation and disability are overcome by couriers and express post prescriptions. Pet owners can access help via video conferencing and smart phone apps to

help vets assess their beloved pets, to determine each animal’s ailments, illnesses and condition. The consultations often provide peace of mind to owners who may be otherwise clueless as to their family pets condition; unsure of whether he needs to be transported to the nearest emergency vet practise. The award winning idea stemmed from the Northern Territory based vets experience with isolated communities, having lived in Arnhem Land for ten years. Samuelsson found pet owners loved the convenience and efficiency of Skype consultations. The service can be accessed globally and provides care to pet owners regardless of their location.

The tavern will also feature a Sportsman’s Bar will full TAB facilities, a family orientated bistro serving restaurant quality meals, and an alfresco dining area that includes an outdoor kitchen with woodfired ovens.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRYSTAL POOLS! WORDS BY MICHELLE STACPOOLE

W

hen Wendy and Russell Hendersen saw a gap in the pool cleaning and maintenance field back in 1989, they opened Crystal Pools.

It didn’t take long for business to outgrow their home-based premises, and thanks to the foresight of local businessman Bob Biddlecombe they moved into a purpose built store in Coolalinga in 1998.

g3 is a nutrient-rich juice from the prized gâc “superfruit” of southern Asia, whose nutritional beneets have been scientiecally demonstrated to protect cells.

Now operating as Crystal Pool Maintenance and Supplies, Wendy and Russell credit Bob for giving them their big break in business. “He gave us a handshake deal that lasted for about 16 years, until he passed away. You just don’t get that kind of thing in business these days,” says Wendy. With the Biddlecombe family continuing Bob’s legacy by offering a ten-year lease, the future of Crystal Pools at Coolalinga is guaranteed.

Providing a professional and reliable pool management service, as well as carrying and maintaining a full range of pool equipment, filters and pumps, Crystal Pools has experienced and qualified staff who make the quality of their customers’ pools a priority. As they celebrate their 18th birthday in Coolalinga, Wendy and Russell are keen to thank those who have assisted them on their journey, particularly Fannie Bay Pool shop where the couple were first given the opportunity to learn the ropes of the industry before branching out on their own. With a goal to be rated a five star pool shop, Crystal Pools look forward to continuing the service they have become renowned for. “We are the same pool shop, with the same service and equipment. Now we have the ability to service more clients,” says Wendy.

inners of the 2016 Awards in the above categories were announced at an Awards Dinner held at the Darwin Convention Centre on Friday October 21st. Graeme Suckling, Chief Executive Officer of UDIA (NT) said “this year’s winners include an innovative, environmentally excellent, Defence Housing Australia elevated duplex, designed by Troppo Architects and built by PTM Homes; a Palmerston greenfield subdivision by Urbex, in a joint venture with the Land Development Corporation, which exhibits excellent retention of native vegetation corridors within its Masterplanned design; and a mixed use CBD high rise building by Halikos Development Pty Ltd which features incredible views

of Darwin and its harbour, quality finishes, specialized building materials, and a unique framing system and building techniques.” In the high density development category the winning project, the H105 development in Mitchell Street, was described by judges as “…a well designed and constructed building with the layout of the commercial tenancy providing great flexibility and functionality. The design provides for a mix of apartments and “twokeyed” apartments, also resulting in great flexibility and finishes are of a high standard.” The judges were also impressed with the Tomazos entry, Tech Tower, a nine-storey mixeduse apartment complex in the Darwin, stating “…there a number

of excellent qualities of this development including the overall architectural design; the common area of the pool and gym; and the efficient use of space in the various floor plans.” Tech Tower was awarded a Certificate of Merit. ASCHE DUPLEX

The siting of the two dwellings maximises airflows through them, minimising the need for air conditioning and also utilises the land area very efficiently, giving the impression that they are sited on a much larger block. In addition, the use of non-conventional materials, such as for walls and flooring, will ensure long-term durability and sustainability. The Asche duplex project was also successful in winning the inaugural innovation in development award. Judges commented “…considerable innovation in design has gone into this duplex particularly with the layout on a relatively small lot. The many positive features noted in the Environmental Excellence category also apply here. Added to those are innovative features such as the wide opening doors to the third bedroom and the “outside” shower.” The Masterplanned development category was won by the Zuccoli Stage 1 greenfield development in Palmerston. Established in 2012, the partnership between Urbex and the Land Development Corporation aimed to design a community which would provide a contemporary lifestyle in a natural environment, featuring large

open spaces and a village feel. Its design acknowledges Darwin’s tropical climate and includes a diverse and affordable range of living choices for first home owners and low income earners. Lots are positioned to maximise solar orientation, capture breezes and provide views to retained bushland and parklands. Judges commented “The planning of Zuccoli has taken advantage of the topography thus maximising aspects for the residential, commercial and recreational areas. The park adjacent to the commercial area is of particular relevance in that regard, and is well planned, designed and built. In Masterplanning Zuccoli the developer has managed the relationship with the Land Development Corporation well, creating a very good public/private partnership for the benefit of the ultimate urban form.” The winning NT projects will now be automatically nominated in their relevant categories in the National Awards for Excellence, with winners to be announced in Perth during April 2017. Last year’s NT winner of the medium density development award, “Artique” by the Makrylos Group, became our first ever winner of a national Award for Excellence earlier this year. DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

Are you A First home

buyer?

THE NORTHERN TERRITORY GOVERNMENT HAS INCREASED THE ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO FIRST HOME BUYERS.

FIRST HOME BUYER PURCHASING AN ESTABLISHED HOME You may be eligible for the FIRST HOME OWNER DISCOUNT, which provides a discount of up to $23 928.60 on the stamp duty payable, and a HOME RENOVATION GRANT of up to $10 000.

An established home is one that has been previously sold or occupied, and is able to be lawfully occupied as a place of residence.

FIRST HOME OWNER DISCOUNT

From 1 September 2016, the First Home Owner Discount is a full stamp duty concession on the initial $500 000 value of the home for established homes valued at $650 000 or less.

HOME RENOVATION GRANT

The $10 000 Home Renovation Grant can be used towards renovations and improvements to the home. Up to $2000 of the grant can be used towards the purchase of household goods. There is no cap on the total value of renovations; however the maximum grant paid by the Northern Territory Government is $10 000. To get financial help to renovate or improve your property follow these steps:

1 Obtain quotes for the renovations or improvements you’d like done from local businesses

ARE YOU ABOUT TO BUY YOUR FIRST HOME?

WE GET IT. YOU’VE PROBABLY SACRIFICED MORE THAN JUST A WEEKLY SMASHED AVOCADO TO SAVE UP ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY YOUR FIRST HOME.

S

o now that you’re nearly there, deposit waiting in the bank, paperwork signed on your very own home, the government wants to help you out by making sure you can afford to give your new place a fresh coat of paint or buy a washing machine so you don’t have to go around to Mum and Dad’s each weekend to wash your clothes. Right now, if you’re a first home buyer you could be eligible for up to $34,000 in discounts and grants from the Northern Territory Government, including a $10,000 home renovation grant.

BUYING AN ESTABLISHED HOME One of the first things you should do if you’re buying an existing dwelling as your first home (meaning one that has been sold or lived in before) is make sure you apply for the first home owner discount through your conveyancer. This discount on stamp duty could save you up to $24,000 depending on the value of the home that you’re buying. If you’ve been granted the stamp duty discount it means you’re also eligible to apply for the $10,000 home renovation grant. The home renovation grant is worth up to $10,000 and can be used towards improvements or renovations to your home. If you do some renovations, you can use up to $2,000 of the grant money to buy household goods such as that new fridge you’ve had your eye on or pretty much any other household item you’d normally find in a home.

148

DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

There’s no co-contribution requirement on the $10,000 worth of work, but if the job you want to get done costs more than that you’ll need to pay the difference yourself. You only have three months to apply for the home renovation grant from the settlement date of your property purchase, so best get to it. You also need to use a Territory business to do the work; no do-it-yourself renovations allowed, sorry. So start thinking about the work you want to get done as soon as your home purchase is a sure thing and give your local Territory tradie a call to arrange a quote.

BUYING A NEW HOME Don’t worry, if you’re building or buying your first home off the plan there’s financial support available for you too. The first home owner grant is worth up to $26,000 for home buyers entering into contracts to construct or purchase a brand new home. How do you define a new home, I hear you ask. For the purpose of this grant a new home is one that has never previously been lived in or sold as a place of residence. Your home is new so you won’t need to do renovations, but if you are eligible for the first home owner grant you can apply for up to $2,000 to help you buy household goods from a local Territory business. It’s easy to apply. Simply download the household goods grant application form from

our website, fill it out, then scan and email it to the Territory Revenue Office at ntrevenue@nt.gov.au. If you meet the requirements of the grant, the money will be paid straight into your bank account within 14 days. You then have 90 days to hit the shops and buy yourself some new stuff for your home and send a copy of the receipts to the Territory Revenue Office. Sounds great! Where can I get more information? All the information about financial help available to first home buyers can be found online at www.firsthome.nt.gov.au. There are even sample quotes and invoices there that you can give to your tradies to make sure they provide all the information in their quote that you’ll need for your home renovation grant application. If you’re still confused about the home renovation grant component (for existing homes), either call the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation on 1800 193 111 or send an email to homerenovation.grant@nt.gov.au with your questions and someone will get back to you. Queries about the first home owner discount (for established homes), or the first home owner grant or household goods grant (for new homes) should be directed to the Territory Revenue Office on 1300 305 353 or ntrevenue@nt.gov.au.

ustomer satisfaction research and ratings agency, Canstar Blue, has announced First National Real Estate the winner of its 2016 ‘Most Satisfied Customers’ award, following customer research about the experience of homeowners, tenants and landlords with Australia’s largest real estate brands.

GOOD COMMUNICATIONS AND PROBLEM RESOLUTION ARE CRUCIAL ELEMENTS OF ANY GOOD REAL ESTATE SERVICE AND IT IS NOTABLE THAT FIRST NATIONAL WAS THE ONLY ONE TO RATE FIVE STARS IN THESE AREAS.”

In assessing quality of service delivery nationwide, Canstar Blue focused on a series of measures incorporating agent advice and communication; problem resolution, value for money, marketing, moving services, contract handling and finally, overall satisfaction. First National Real Estate was the only real estate company to achieve 5-star ratings. ‘As members of Australia’s largest network of independent agents, First National Real Estate O’Donoghues is delighted to be recognised as a customer satisfaction leader’ said First National O’Donoghues principal, Jeremy O’Donoghue. ‘There can be no greater measure of the success of the client / agent relationship than overall satisfaction. This award represents the fulfillment of our membership’s nationwide commitment to ensure we deliver Australia’s best real estate sales and property management services’.

Last year, First National Real Estate also received the Canstar Blue award for overall customer satisfaction in New Zealand, thus highlighting the excellence First National agencies provide on both sides of The Tasman. ‘Each and every one of our offices is committed to customer satisfaction so it’s no coincidence our network has now won this award in both countries. We see this as proof positive that our culture, training, communication, service and commitment to results sets us apart from our competitors’ said Jeremy O’Donoghue. ‘A critical difference at First National is that our membership requirements relate specifically to service delivery, not generation of fees for our head office. As a cooperative, our agents work together, not against each other, and the Canstar Blue award confirms consumers see the benefits’. Head of Canstar Blue, Megan Doyle, congratulated First National Real Estate on the success, saying: “This is a great result across all customer touch points, suggesting First National is satisfying its customers regardless of their differing professional real estate requirements.

EXCELLENCE IN REAL ESTATE

Elders Real Estate

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE,

NATIONAL FOOTPRINT

E

lders Real Estate has been servicing the wider Darwin area for more than 10 years. With a footprint across four key locations, the team continues to outperform the ebb and flow of the evolving Darwin property market. The agency’s expertise was showcased in 2016, with Elders Real Estate taking the REINT Award for Large Agency of the Year for a record fourth year in a row, along with Elders agent Derek Hart being named Residential Salesperson of the Year. The team was also recognised with the 2016 Community Service Award, having donated more than $100,000 during the year to local charities and organisations. General manager of Elders’ National Real Estate division, Tom Russo, said the awards were a great representation of the market

knowledge and client focus that exists within the Darwin team. “The team continues to prove they are market leaders and truly understand their client needs, in what is a continuously evolving local market,” Mr Russo said. “The work being done by the team in Darwin, has not gone unnoticed by the wider business. So much so, that we will be holding Elders’ 2017 National Real Estate Conference in Darwin, showcasing the local market and the team’s success, to our entire rural and residential network of agents,” he said. Appointed as general manager of real estate in January 2016, Mr Russo has assumed responsibility for the strategic development of the national Elders Real Estate group, including 279 points of presence across rural and residential agency,

real estate franchise, property management, water trading, agribusiness investments and home loans. Previously as the general manager of strategy and business development for Elders, Mr Russo played a pivotal role in devising and implementing the turnaround strategy for Elders, and now has his sights set on a re-development of the Elders Real Estate brand. “Our Board has backed a new strategic direction for the Real Estate business, which is heavily focussed around increased growth and a greater brand presence, right across Australia,” he said. “The Darwin business has been a great starting point for us to identify what is working well, and how we can replicate this across other areas in Australia.”

DEREK HART 2 MINUTES WITH

DARWIN’S NUMBER ONE

REAL ESTATE AGENT ELDERS REAL ESTATE’S DEREK HART PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO WHAT IT ’S LIKE TO BE NAMED REINT ’S RESIDENTIAL SALES PERSON OF THE YEAR, PLUS SOME TIPS FOR DARWIN BUYERS AND SELLERS

What does being named REINT’s Residential Salesperson of the Year mean to you? Thank you all for the congratulation wishes. Winning the award has made me feel that I have really cemented myself within the real estate industry and a reward for working hard over the past nine years. Receiving the highest NT accolade in the toughest sales market (2016) that Darwin has seen in the past 10 years just tops it all off. What does a ‘normal’ day look like for you? In real estate there is never a real normal day, there is always something new that arises in each day. From there you have to prioritize and complete the tasks. If there is some sort of normal, then for me it is that I always have work to do and I’m always interacting with vendors and buyers daily, seven days a week. What motivates you to go above and beyond for your clients? I love the enjoyment I get from my job, the job is a career full of variety. The people you meet and the properties you see. Vendors are happy to sell and buyers are excited to purchase and I provide the service and passion for them both. Why did you choose a career in real estate and what advice would you provide someone thinking about working in real estate? Real estate is a career and not just a job, what you put in is what you get out of it. Still to this day after nine years of listing and selling I am ambitious to achieve. I’m results driven and just love every challenge that comes on a daily basis. Anyone wanting to join the industry - I absolutely,

highly recommend it! You do need to be a people person and have a number of qualities and skills in this job; buyer’s advocate, forecasting expert, business manager, consultant, negotiator, marketer, relations manager, problem solver and more! Attention to detail is imperative, as is being organised, following up on leads, communicating well and paying attention to each client’s needs. That’s when you become a successful agent; once you emulate these qualities you will always be successful no matter how difficult the sales environment is. What sets you apart in real estate? My point of difference is the way I bring my passion and energy into any conversation with vendors and buyers. I use the Fastrak sale system which encourages more offers to be presented and has resulted in more properties sold. This sale process is exclusive to Elders Real Estate. My dedication and commitment in getting results for my clients has resulted in recognition through a number of awards, including Elders’ Top Selling Agent across 2009-2012, 2014 and 2015. Recently, I was also recognised at an industry level, winning REINT’s Sales Person of the Year Award for the Northern Territory. Top three things someone should look for in an agent when selling a property? 1. The owner should firstly feel comfortable with the agent they are considering and have the feeling that the agent is the right person for the job. 2. Identify an agent who will be the best negotiator when dealing with potential buyers.

3. Look for an agent who will work hard for the sale of the property, especially at open inspections and an agent who will answer their phone at any time – seven days a week. Favourite place to visit in the NT and why? It has to be Kakadu. Only a few hours from Darwin, to escape and explore the natural wonders that are on offer, something I never get sick of. The chance to drive out and discover rugged lands with cascading waterfalls, fishing, aboriginal rock art, giant crocodiles and exotic bird life is pure pleasure. What do you think the Darwin property market looks like in 2017? I believe that 2017 is going to be a great and exciting year for all. I have seen the market now plateau and more buyers coming on board. 2017 will be a fantastic year, particularly for buyers to get in before prices go back up. With a new local government in place, exciting times are ahead for the ever expanding Northern Territory, and I believe consumer confidence will come back into the market. Best advice you’ve ever received? Always listen to someone else’s point of view and take it from there. You may learn something! Top tip for someone thinking of investing in the Darwin real estate market? Invest now! Darwin has an ever growing population, low unemployment and exploding infrastructure. With current prices relatively low, it’s a great time to buy. DARWINLIFEMAG.COM

Senior Sales Support Officer Real Estate Elders Real Estate Darwin has been awarded the REINT Community Service Award – what are your highlights from the Elders Community Spirit initiative? Winning the REINT Community Service award was an amazing achievement after a full year of giving. It’s hard to choose a specific event or charity as they were all amazing! From Christmas with the Salvos, to the million paws walk with the RSPCA - each event had its highlights. I will say working with the RSPCA, and additionally the Canine Expo, was possibly the most fun for me as a dog lover. At the Canine Expo I did have the pleasure of dressing as Spike who is the mascot dog for Elders Real Estate. The best part of the Elders Community Spirit initiative is actually getting hands on and helping the community. There is no better feeling than giving to others who need it and I look forward to our next year of community projects.

Being the fourth year in a row the agency has taken out the REINT Large Agency of the Year, how does the team consistently strive to do better?

As the newest member of the Elders Real Estate team in Darwin, what attracted you to Elders Real Estate?

As the longest serving member of the Darwin Elders Real Estate team what has motivated you over the years?

I have been working at Elders Real Estate for around eight months. Previously, I worked as a customer service specialist with one of the main banks in Darwin and have always been focused on helping customers reach their goals.

The first response to this question is the people I work with, which is why I have been with Elders for over 20 years. It is a team environment with all aspects of the Elders network working together to build a Company we can all be proud of.

After purchasing my first property it changed my outlook on the Real Estate Industry and I kept wanting to be involved. From the day I was interviewed at Elders I felt welcome and could tell I was going to enjoy my new career in this industry. With the training and support I receive from Elders I know that I have made the right decision for my career.

The work is challenging, but with structured procedures in place it makes the work load that much easier, no day is ever the same. Meeting many different groups of people, and hopefully bringing each situation to a successful conclusion for all parties has motivated me over the years.

Real Estate Sales Representative

Team Spirit is one of the strong factors in the ongoing success of this amazing team, fostered by the desire to strive for excellence in all facets of the industry. Ongoing training on new concepts, especially in this ‘digital’ world, focussing on the latest innovations, as well as support and encouragement from our peers. Sharing knowledge, cheering the wins and discussing our challenges creates both strength of character and the heady excitement of success. Helping new people grow in experience and expertise within the company and encouraging everyone in their daily tasks is how we strive to be the best.

Property Manager

I will continue to focus and develop my property management skills in order to gain a more professional approach to the industry and hope to be here for many years to come.

FINANCE CHAT WITH

ELDERS HOME LOANS NT’S

KATRINA PARRINGTON

Mortgage broker vs banker – what are the big differences? Choice, rates, tailored lending solutions to suit the client and the fact that mortgage brokers compare thousands of lending solutions from multiple lenders to make sure we source the loan that best suits our client. We negotiate for our clients to get the best rate, not the carded rate. We get to know the client and are able to provide personalised service What is something that people may not know about Elders Home Loans? Our service to clients far exceeds just the loan, we assist our clients with trusted insurance, financial planning and legal professionals to ensure every aspect of their financial health is covered to protect them and their families. What does a first home buyer need to know about getting their finance sorted? Firstly, find out what you can afford. You can then plan your budget and get pre-approved.

Consider your whole financial wellbeing, your future plans and where you see yourself in five years. Be honest and transparent and provide as much financial background as you can to assist the process; payslips, loan statements, savings history, assets and if you have a security guarantor available to assist. Communication with your broker is key at this point! Market conditions and interest rates vary, how can people be sure they are getting the best deal? The BEST deal is different for each client – it’s expensive to transfer between banks in monetary terms, and takes time to change the loan structure. We tailor the product to our client and negotiate with the banks for the best deal possible for fixed and variable rates. We guide our clients through the process and assist in educating them in developing a strategy, whether it be for investment purposes or simply paying off a loan as quickly as possible.

Home loans or refinancing is often daunting, what is the best advice you can give to prepare people? Take time to talk to your broker, consider all the options and be honest and transparent. Provide six months’ worth of home loan statements, as well as all financial data you have. Are you chasing better rates or disappointed with your existing bank? Many banks now treat brokers as a trusted partner in the transaction process if a client is having an issue with a bank employee then the broker may be able to step in and be the bank’s intermediary moving forward and save the client the hassle of refinancing. You’re not originally from NT. Why did you move here and why do you love calling it home? Lifestyle, opportunity and community. The Territory might be considered an outback destination but the people here have a heart like nowhere else I’ve experienced.

Commission Chair, Professor Allan Fels AO, said there is a need for action across sectors to improve our mental health system through the appropriate allocation of resources. “Evidence suggests we should focus on prevention and early intervention which can reduce the need for more complex and costly interventions,” Professor Fels said. “Our current focus is on treating mental illness once it hits crisis point, whereas preventative interventions can improve peoples’ lives and are cost effective. “These interventions can involve improving health treatments as well as areas such as disability, housing and employment services.” The Commission is hosting Professor Martin Knapp from the London School of Economics who will have the opportunity to brief senior Australian Government policy makers on the economic case for better mental health. Professor Knapp said his work uses economic arguments and evidence to inform policy discussion and influence the mental health sector’s practice development. “I’ve found the question is ‘can we afford not to fund early intervention mental health practices’,” Professor Knapp said.

“For example, there are huge costs to society and individuals if early intervention isn’t provided when children experience bullying. Its consequences were revealed when I examined the lives of victims 40 years later when they were 50; they were less likely to be employed, own their own home and less likely to marry; and they used more mental health services. “Another example is if hospitals allocate funding towards treating people who selfharm by offering psychosocial intervention in emergency departments, it aids mental and physical recovery and has substantial societal and economic benefits,” he said. Professor Fels said the estimated cost of mental ill-health to Australia is around four per cent of GDP or about $4000 for every tax payer. ”Better mental health can increase national ‘mental wealth’. We’d see an increase in workforce participation, productivity and economic competitiveness as well as an increase in GDP,” he said. “Our vision is to support contributing lives and thriving communities through the wise allocation of funding and services across the mental health sector and other related sectors.”

NTMEC funds events from Darwin to Alice Springs, supports various organisations and government and is dedicated to developing industry capability, making the NT a more easily accessible location for national and international bodies to deliver events. Indigenous art, music and cultural festivals, food and wine festivals, sporting events, the People’s Choice BASSINTHEGRASS, CrownBet Darwin Triple Crown Supercars, Red CentreNATS and Parrtjima a Festival in Light make up NTMEC’s exciting portfolio. After all, the Northern Territory has some wonderful points of difference including its climate for a significant portion of the year when it’s cold down south. Territory events receive incredible local support, meaning tourists feel welcomed and have fun, positive experiences they’re likely to revisit. “We see what we do as a significant advertising or PR campaign for the NT, developing a tourism product which encourages people to visit from all over,” says General Manager Andrew Hopper.

Having just secured funding for DriveAbout ™, an animated app in Indigenous languages currently in development by his company Ambrose Business Solutions to assist the indigenous community in obtaining their drivers licence, Clinton was the epitome of success. Yet behind the scenes he was dealing with a devastating tragedy. Shortly after the cover photo was taken, and before it appeared in the magazine, one of Clinton’s closest friends committed suicide. Citing his relationship with the person he refers to fondly as “ Twinkles” as that of a brother, Clinton turned to his life coach, leading therapist Barry Hogg from Camp Eden. “Since I’ve met Barry, he’s helped navigate the highs and lows of life, entrepreneurism and business, and provided some really good tools that I believe have helped me through,” he says. While Clinton has been a long time advocate of the benefits of psychotherapy, he understands that it does not

seem to be at the forefront of Australian male culture, and aims to change that perception. At the time of Twinkles death he had just developed a digital survival guide for business based on a popular animation the ’10 reasons businesses fail’, effectively creating digital tools to help business people survive and prosper. Clinton wanted to create better tools to assist men with their mental health, and rather than a survival guide, he decided to develop an app to tackle mental health issues head on. He secured rights to animate the Rudyard Kipling poem “If ” - one of his and Twinkles favourite poems. “I’m pretty sure if every Australian male that needed help went to a health professional tomorrow, there’d be not enough health professionals. I thought that in our digital age, and especially in the education technology space that I work in, I can build a survival guide for men. I used the “If ” poem as my content delivery system as historically it’s been

a poem that has been handed from father to son,” says Clinton. By bringing the power of animation to one of Kipling’s greatest works, coupled with the narration by Jack Thompson, Clinton has enabled the poem’s message of maintaining a balance, building self-confidence and facing the world bravely to reach a wider audience. Slated for completion in mid 2017, the If app will contain 36 four-minute videos with his therapists. Backed by clinical psychologists, it provides the tools to enable all men to effectively manage their mental health, from serviceman to FIFO workers, tradies, men of the land or yuppie mates, wherever they are in the world at anytime of the day. When it comes to a quote from the poem that resonates most with Clinton, he only has to look back on the events of the past six months for an answer. “2016 for me was very much triumph and disaster, but a positive will come out of this.”

o me, this section of the poem rang true in the sense of what I went through during the Global Financial Crisis.

One moment I was doing very well thanks to a strong share market, then all of a sudden the whole thing was taken away and I was left standing there like millions of others thinking “What just happened?”

nor walk too wise:

if you can dream -

It’s interesting that Kipling says “Never breathe a word about your loss”, because people encourage us to not bottle things up. Sometimes however others don’t need to hear it because they’re probably going through the same thing themselves, or have their own issues and problems that they’re dealing with.

and not make your dreams your master;

There comes a point in your journey when you need to stop talking about it and get on with life. That’s the simplicity of it, and it’s the lesson that I learnt. In my life I’ve had some really great highs and some devastating lows, so when I did turn to people and ask for support, it was about how to deal with the crisis in front of me, whether it be financial or coping with separation and the loss of a loved one. This is an interesting tool that makes things a lot clearer for people. Jack Thompson’s voice is so powerful, and the animation is creative and constructive towards helping men in need know which direction to take. Neville is Store Manager of Parap Fine Foods.

or me, 2016 has been quite a confronting year. I was very close to Twinkles. I was emcee at his wedding, and our wives are very close friends as well. His passing came crashing down on us when my wife and I were in the early stages of separating. While we see the journey forward as amicable and positive – we refer to it as “conscious uncoupling” the situation has created a lot of personal challenges for me. I’m the same age as Twinkles, and to see his young boys speak at his funeral was heartbreaking. That for me was a reminder that when things are tough and you are having some dark moments, you just need to

hold on. Giving up is not an option because it has such an impact on people on so many levels. Normally I’m a bit of a closed book, and I don’t like to let people in and see my weaknesses. This poem and app is all about getting men comfortable with the idea that it’s ok to talk about what is going on for you. It’s a tool that we can tap into to give us resources that are relatable and we can engage with to help us move away from some of those negative thoughts that might be floating through our minds. So without realising what we are do, we are programming our children that our first response is No, thus creating fear in what we do. I read this line in Kipling’s poem, to remind me constantly that anything is possible. We are on this earth for such a short time, and it is not a dress rehearsal. BUSINESS TIPS FOR WORKING

with your spouse

U N D E R S TA N D W H AT Y O U A R E G E T T I N G I N T O

D ouglas Gillanders - Educator, M ediator, Coach | Annette Gil l anders - Teacher I nspirator Coach

F

or as many couples who say “I could never work with my spouse” there are as many who are doing it. Some well, some not so well. No matter what working with your spouse can be a really rewarding and fun thing to do providing together you set up some fundamentals that outline the way in which you work. Really understand WHY you have chosen to go into business. Keep those reasons as part of the why, you are in business. They may even form part of the businesses vision and be reflected in the values you create in the business. Couples have been in business together for centuries, yet it may not have appeared that way due to the type of functions that each performed. Take the Queen and Duke, they are in business, their business is running the sovereign and each has their roles and responsibilities. For those already in business, ensure you do a business health check to see how you’re going and achieving what you wanted to achieve in the very beginning. Reflect and ask yourself; What were the reasons you chose to go into business? What was it that you wanted to achieve? What agreements did you make between each other? Maybe one of you stopped studying, gave up a career, or changed direction to help with business? If so what agreement did you have? Did you have a timeline? If so what was it?

Regardless of whether you’re already in business together, or thinking about it, here are some great tips to remember:

DIVIDE AND CONQUER So, you go into business together without considering each of your skills, strengths and technical knowledge. It’s important to be clear about what each will do so that you don’t collide with each other. There is no point in each of you doing the same thing. So, divide up the skills and each one to take full control and responsibility of that area. KEEP PERSONAL AND BUSINESS ISSUES SEPARATE No talking work in the bedroom, it’s your sacred place together. Remind one another that this area is out of business bounds. Have regular workplace meetings to keep each other up to date on what is happening. When you get home, talk about work for only 30mins. The topics should not be operational, rather the light hearted and funny things that happened during the day. If there is a significant event that is creating stress, then ask for time with your partner and allocate a quiet place when each of you can listen and respond with kindness.

even when it might not be what you agree with. In front of staff and customers back each other trust what they are doing, that you have each other’s back. It’s a privilege to work with your partner so trust them. UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO Really know that this will change your life. You may need to make sacrifices regarding family or your savings. You may not be able to travel as easily as you used to or go on regular holidays. Know that you don’t get paid for days off and you may sometimes not even get paid. Some nights you might not sleep and some days you will be so excited the way your customers and/staff responded. One of the most important aspects of working together is that you need to have a united front, do not fight in front of staff. Allow staff to see you as two individuals that they work with, not the work version of their Mummy and Daddy.

WORKING TOGETHER CAN BE SO MUCH FUN AND REALLY REWARDING, EXPLORE THE OPTIONS BEFORE YOU GO INTO IT.

MAKE TIME FOR YOUR RELATIONSHIP Even though you are at work together you may not see each other, you are unlikely to share an intimate moment. So, make a day or evening within your calendar that will have you being a couple, could be a friend’s party or the movies or just an evening on the couch. Speak kind words and most of all appreciate and recognise each other’s contribution. Give each other a hug they are free!

If you’re in business with your partner or thinking about it, give us a call to help!

TRUST EACH OTHER FULLY As each of you will be working in your own areas you need to trust and support the other

Economic Summits

16/17 WHAT WE’RE WORKING TOWARDS

The economic summits will shape the future development of the Northern Territory by developing a long-term vision that will shape the next 10 years of the Northern Territory’s economic development.

The Northern Territory Government is holding a series of economic summits across the Northern Territory in partnership with independent consultants Deloitte. Key topics being considered through this process include: • creating jobs in the economy • the right place to invest in infrastructure spending • stemming the population outflow • innovation in the Territory economy • regional growth • Indigenous economic engagement.

economicsummit.nt.gov.au

HOW WE’LL GET THERE

The summit series is being delivered in four phases between October 2016 and March 2017. The first phase of consultations has been held in Darwin, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs with industry groups, business, regional economic development committees and local stakeholders.

The initial consultations revealed a number of common issues across industries and locations. Challenges around the key factors of production - land, labour and capital featured strongly as did enterprise and innovation, connectivity, relationships and liveability. From these issues raised, six preliminary factors or ‘levers’ have been refined which we can utilise to accelerate economic growth: • Land • People • Capital

• Enterprise and innovation • Connectivity • Liveability

FEEDBACK SO FAR

These levers will be the focus of the second phase of the summit process to develop principles, targeted strategies and recommendations.

Territorians can keep up to date with the summit’s progress and provide their input at economicsummit.nt.gov.au

Whether they are excited about purchasing their first home, or they are in experiencing financial difficulty and requires assistance, we aim to understand, and use all of our resources to find the best possible options available,” she says. ABILITY TO SUCCEED

Henbur y School

DESBINA

YEAR 10

YEAR 10

I came to Henbury School when I was in year 8. I was a bit shy at first but I’ve learnt to speak clearly because I get to practice lots.

I was nervous when I first started at Henbury. I use to visit the school farm a lot and help out with the chickens and rabbits. It made me feel calm.

Work experience has helped a lot because I know what to do now; how to use a barista coffee machine and work a cash register. I know I like to work inside as I don’t like the heat.

I like to do things with my hands. I started work experience in year 7 at Crocodylus Park. Since then I have had work experience at the Furry Godmother, Crocosaurus Cove and in the school’s café. I know how our school’s aquaponics set up works and how to keep the tanks looking fresh and clean.

Desbina completed a Barista training course this year and is enrolled in the Certificate II in Salon Assistant next year.

y proving the intrinsic value of a person with special needs, and what they can undoubtedly add to a workplace, we knew that more opportunities would continue to develop in the future. Our journey was building quality education beyond classroom walls and the school fence line by developing our own in-house job training and upskilling opportunities.

Henbury School has an Opportunity Shop on Aralia Street, Nightcliff. From school they run several enterprises including a garden crew, Sense-ational Designs (textiles and screen printing), a café and a beverage trailer. For more information or to book their services contact the school on 89977077.

HAMISH YEAR 12

I’m nervous but excited about leaving school. I’m a lot more confident and can catch public transport around town. I feel like I’m prepared to work as I’ve done a lot of work experience and completed Certificates in Bakery, Hospitality, Cookery, Barista, Business and Retail. I also completed a Certificate in Conservation and Land Management so I know that’s not for me. Hamish graduated from Henbury School this year. He is working closely with Darwin Skills Development Scheme to find employment. Hamish would like to get a job in a cafe or bakery.

O

ver the past few years, The Essington School Darwin has built a strong foundation in Music and Performing Arts programs and Media Studies. The School has long been recognized for its outstanding and comprehensive music programs. In 2006 the School achieved national attention when it was identified by the Federal Taskforce reviewing music education as one of twenty ‘exemplary’ music schools in Australia. The success of the school’s performing arts program over the last ten years can be seen in the growth in performing arts programs – and students studying in this area. It can also be seen in the number of students winning places in national performing arts academies. At the end of 2016 three Essington students were accepted out of thousands nationally for limited places at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), Sydney, and the Western Australia Academy of Peforming Arts (WAAPA), Perth. All three students have been long term students at the school, two having attended the school from Preschool to Year 12. Roman Delo has been offered places at both NIDA and WAAPA in 2017, and has chosen to study at NIDA. Millie Hunt and Demi Tcha have been offered two of the twenty places available nationally to school students each year and will commence there in 2017.

Principal David Cannon said:

THE PERFORMING ARTS IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR OVERALL PROGRAMS AT ESSINGTON. WE BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A CREATIVE CAPACITY IN ALL CHILDREN THAT CAN BE FOSTERED AND ENCOURAGED. THIS ALLOWS STUDENTS TO BUILD THEIR ESSENTIAL LIFE SKILLS, CONFIDENCE, COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND TEAM WORK.” DARWINLIFEMAG.COM
