Darwin Festival Artistic Director
JAMES GOUGH
Darwin Festival Chief Executive Officer
“Life is lived in moments. But not all moments are created equal. Some moments we never want to end, nostalgic for them while we’re still in them... The trick is to know the moment. Because if we’re paying attention and open to these moments, they will take us, or allow us to take them, by the hand.” – Ben Crowe, Where the Light Gets In
Magical moments are in abundance this year at Darwin Festival, taking place in August on Larrakia Country. Moments of joy, moments where your perspective shifts, moments where your heart opens and moments where you lose yourself and let go!
The Festival this year bubbles with collective effervescence – the joy, group energy and harmony and the indescribable feeling when you are dancing in unison, laughing with strangers, singing along to all the lyrics of your favourite band. This is dialled up to the max in Darwin as we get to experience the joy of life surrounded by beautiful nature, outdoors, as the sun is setting and under the twinkly lights.
This is a festival all about connection, and there is no better place to connect in August than Festival Park, where you can feast on food, art and culture with your friends and family. Each night on the INPEX Sunset Stage, be blown away by spectacular circus, laugh out loud to your favourite comedian, dance the night away to incredible music and much more. The precinct expands this year with our newest addition – Night Quarter next to the Town Hall Ruins. Plus you won’t want to miss the mind-blowing entertainment in The Spiegeltent at Sitzler Festival Lawn or the equal parts heart-warming and heart-breaking stories in Brown’s Mart Theatre.
Each year, Darwin Festival makes Darwin the star, as we take you on a journey of this beautiful place – from a big musical set on a roller-skating rink at Marrara Indoor Stadium to events at George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, from harbour cruises with a twist to three epic closing weekend concerts at the iconic Darwin Ski Club, and so much more.
None of this would happen without significant support, and we gratefully acknowledge the Northern Territory Government through Tourism and Events NT for their continued investment. The Festival is made possible through the support of our partners, donors, Friends of the Festival, Board, staff and volunteers and we deeply thank them all.
With a packed program of 100 events this year, we can’t wait to see you at one event – or all 100!

TISM: historic, ridiculous and impossible to explain
You’ll never see another band like TISM – a mind-bending collision of highbrow and lowbrow, poetry and profanity, choreography and chaos, and a playlist full of giant, singalong anthems skewering modern life with a wink.
They were Australia’s biggest cult band of all time when they left Darwin wrecked in their wake 30 years ago. Finally they’re back – as frantic, frightening and funny as ever.
As if this show couldn’t get any wilder, the legendary Swamp Jockeys will emerge from deep in the Humpty Doo speargrass to crank out some of their ridge-country classics as support act.

Led by singer-guitarist Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield, these wizards of the shapeshifting live show have built a formidable reputation for their spectacular stage performances – a high-wire mix of musical mastery and edge-of-your-seat chaos.
Support on the night comes from award-winning, Naarmbased artist Bumpy, a magnetic force in Australian music, with a voice that balances tenderness and power. She is joined on the lineup by Caiti Baker, bringing her infectious beats and anthemic lyrics.

DAILY REVIEW
TERRAPIN / AICHI PREFECTURAL ART THEATER
GOLDFISH
Could a goldfish save the world?
A solo puppeteer is performing a fable for children, when suddenly a team of disaster recovery workers bursts into the theatre to transform it into an evacuation centre.
Reality and fantasy collide in this ground-breaking collaboration between celebrated Tasmanian puppetry company Terrapin and Japan’s Aichi Prefectural Art Theater. Everyday items are transformed through the communal magic of suspended disbelief, coming alive to tell the tale – a blue tarpaulin becomes a surging ocean; bags of rice become sandbags to hold back a flood.
Goldfish is a dynamic, inventive performance – a game of eye spy on stage.

BELLOO
BACK TO BILO
A true-life testimony to people power and persistence
Priya and Nades left war-torn Sri Lanka and found each other in regional Queensland. The Biloela community welcomed them with open arms – but four years later came a knock at the door and they were ripped away in a dawn raid.
Their story could have ended there, but a brave band of Biloela women weren’t giving up on them so easily. Fighting alongside the young refugee family, they galvanised thousands of ordinary Australians to demand the family be brought back to Bilo. This is the remarkable true account of one family’s ordeal in immigration detention and a testimony to the strength of the human spirit and the power of community told through storytelling, music and stunning projections.

POV
A
kid with a camera. Two adults. No rehearsal
Eleven-year-old Bub is obsessed with documentary filmmaking. In the aftermath of a family breakdown, she turns to dramatised re-enactments to try to figure out what happened. Each performance, two new, unrehearsed actors play the parents, while a child performer directs the action. The script is playful, heartfelt and funny, but the picture shifts with the whims of the human impulse as actors respond live and unprepared. Bub wants to get to the bottom of her mum’s erratic behaviour. Can these two adults answer the tough questions of a child?
Blending live filmmaking with theatre, POV is a daring and inventive production alive with wit and energy.
