Dartford Pride Marks Milestone 5th Anniversary With First-Ever Week-Long Celebration

Dartford Pride returns in June 2026. It’s organised by Orchard West, in partnership with Dartford Borough Council, sponsored by Taylor Wimpey and Dartford Living are the media partners. It’s expected to be bigger and better than ever before!. This year’s festivities mark a major milestone as the event celebrates its 5th anniversary by expanding from a single-day event into a vibrant, townwide week of celebration from June 8th to June 14th.

Since its inception, Dartford Pride has grown into a cornerstone of the local cultural calendar. To celebrate five years of progress and unity, the 2026 programme moves beyond the main stage to include a diverse array of community events, including a Pride exhibition at Dartford Museum, “Pride Specials” offered by local high street businesses, and a creative poetry workshop.

Fan-favourite host Anton Stephans (X-Factor, Genie in Aladdin Pantomime 2025) is confirmed to return to lead the main stage entertainment. The week’s highlights also include a hilarious Drag Bingo night with local drag legend Dee Star, a community fair, and a special screening of the iconic film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Terri McCann, Creative Learning Manager and Organiser of Dartford Pride, said: “I am incredibly proud of how Dartford Pride has evolved over the last five years. What started as a single afternoon of music has blossomed into a vital week of visibility and connection for our local LGBTQIA+ community. This event is about more than just a party; it’s about creating a space where everyone feels they belong and can see themselves reflected in the town’s culture. I’m so excited to see the community get involved through the museum and our local shops, and I can’t wait to reveal our full headline line-up very soon—it’s going to be our biggest year yet.”

Leader of the Council, Jeremy Kite MBE, said: “It’s hard to believe it’s five years since the launch of Dartford Pride. There have been some incredible guests over the years and the event has created some incredible memories that have brought the whole community together. We work with so many groups and communities through the year to encourage events that are open and fun for everyone. Pride’s all about celebration, so it’s great to see a number of groups put on their own events to create a week of activities right across the town.”

Why Space Is the Secret To A Smoother Renovation?

Most home renovation projects begin with good intentions. A new kitchen, a fresh bathroom, updated flooring or a longawaited extension can be exciting at the start. But once the work begins, reality quickly sets in. Furniture gets pushed from room to room, boxes pile up in hallways, dust gets into everything and family life starts to feel far more stressful than it should.

In many cases, the real problem is not the renovation itself. It is the lack of space around it.

People often think decluttering means throwing lots away and embracing minimalism. For some, that works. But for most families, the issue is simpler: they do not have enough usable space at exactly the wrong time.

That is especially true during building and decorating work. Builders, decorators and fitters can work much more efficiently when rooms are properly cleared. There is less wasted time moving furniture around, less risk of damaging belongings and less disruption for the household. For the homeowner, that means a calmer experience. For the team, it usually means a smoother and more straightforward job.

I was recently speaking to a local builder who said they sometimes include temporary furniture removal and storage within renovation quotes because it helps work run faster and more smoothly. It is a practical idea: clear the room properly, protect the customer’s belongings and let the team get on with the job.

In that sense, creating space before a renovation is not simply an extra cost. It can help avoid unnecessary delays, reduce disruption and make the whole project easier to manage.

There is another benefit too. Once items are packed up and moved out, people often see them differently. Some things come back in once the work is finished. Some do not. A renovation can become a chance not only to improve a home, but also to simplify it.

Sometimes the real secret to a smoother renovation is not the design.

What Is Your Child Exploring Through Play?

A gentle guide to understanding play schemas at home At KatieB Kids, we see play as a window into how children think, feel, and make sense of their world. You may notice patterns in your child’s play. These are known as schemas.

They are not labels, but clues to your child’s curiosity.

For each question, choose the answer that feels most like your child (you can choose more than 1 if more than 1 are applicable). Then at the end you should get an idea of your child’s schema and how you can nurture it at home.

1. Your child often: A. Carries objects from place to place B. Throws, drops, or pushes things C. Fills, empties, or hides objects D. Spins or turns objects 2. They enjoy: A. Bags, baskets, or moving items B. Watching things fall or fly C. Boxes, dens, or enclosed spaces D. Wheels, lids, or things that rotate 3. During play, they: A. Line things up or arrange carefully B. Wrap or cover toys C. Join or connect objects D. Climb, hang, or go upside down 4. Outdoors, they are drawn to: A. Moving natural objects around B. Dropping or throwing from heights C. Mostly B’s – Trajectory Your child may be fascinated by movement through space.

Try this at home: Provide balls, scarves, or water play. Notice together how things fall, fly, and travel.

Mostly C’s – Enclosing / Containing / Connecting Your child may be exploring boundaries, relationships, and how things fit together.

Try this at home: Build dens, offer boxes, or use loose parts to join and enclose. Let them create their own spaces.

Mostly D’s – Rotation / Orientation Your child may be exploring movement, balance, and how their body works in space.

Really Pretty Focaccia Bread

By The Little Lavinia Bakery

This delicious bread is easier than it looks, and you can decorate it to create something really stunning!

Use a larger tin to bake a thinner, crispier bread that is delicious served with a dip or chutney.

What to do: This is easily done in a food mixer with a dough hook but can be done – with just a little more effort – manually.

Recipe

I’ve used tom herbs s parsley, o paragus, spring o ato, nio regano, ro semary. n,

Pop all the dry ingredients – Strong White Bread Flour, Sugar, Salt and Dried Yeast into your bowl.

Stir the Oil into the Warm Water and add to the dry mix. Mix until everything is combined.

Knead using the dough hook - or turn onto a clean worktop and knead by hand - for about 7/8 minutes. Knead by pushing the dough down and away from you with the heel of your hand. Fold the dough back toward you, then turn the dough by 90° and repeat the process.

After 7/8 minutes, shape the dough into a ball by holding in your hands, repeatedly pull the sides and tuck them underneath while gradually rotating the dough. Your dough should be quite smooth when you have finished.

Place the dough – smooth side up – into a bowl. Cover with clingfilm and leave somewhere warm for 90-120 minutes or until the dough has tripled in size.

Spread a small amount of oil on the bottom of a roasting tin (or 10” square cake tin) and line the bottom and sides with greaseproof paper.

Place the dough in the tin and - using your fingers – ease the dough out to cover the bottom of the roasting tin. It will bounce back so you will need to persevere. Use you fingers to make the recognisable texture hollows in the dough.

Cover the roasting tin with clingfilm and place somewhere warm for another hour or two.

Decorate the top of the dough with a selection of vegetables and herbs. Be as creative as you like.

Or leave simple, sprinkled with flaky salt.

Bake at 200°C Fan for about 20 minutes until golden. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool.

Cut into squares to serve.

Local Community Group Celebrates 5 Years Of Changing Lives And Launches New Lottery To Keep Vital Support Going.

A Dartford community group that has spent the last five years helping people through illness, disability, poor mental health and isolation is celebrating a major milestone and inviting local people to be part of what comes next.

The award-winning Kindness and Wellbeing Group has marked its fifth birthday with a special celebration joined

by Mayor, Peter Whapshott and Councillor, Kelly Grehan, who met members, heard their stories, and helped cut the birthday cake.

This was more than a celebration. It was a reminder that at some point, many of us need exactly this kind of support.

Whether it’s poor mental health, loneliness, chronic illness, disability, grief, burnout, or simply feeling overwhelmed by life, the Kindness and Wellbeing Group exists for people who need somewhere safe, welcoming and understanding to turn. For just £3 a week, members can come along for a cuppa, friendship, creative activities and access to practical wellbeing support in a space where nobody is judged and nobody has to put on a brave face.

Founded by Laura Hope Cordell, the group was created from lived experience. After facing her own mental health struggles for around 30 years and being medically retired at just 29 due to a rare incurable condition that left her disabled, Laura built the kind of community she knew was missing; one where people could feel seen, supported and less alone.

In the past five years, that vision has grown into an award-winning community project with seven awards and a reputation for genuine, life-changing support.

“If I’d handpicked every member, I couldn’t have picked a kinder group of people,” said Laura. “It’s a team effort. Everyone helps each other because we all know how tough life can be. We are a multi-generational, compassionate, caring bunch of people who really do look out for each other. People often tell us, we are the highlight of their week and coming to the group gives them hope to keep going.”

Sessions now offer more than 30 activities, including crafts, puzzles and games, alongside free mental and physical health resources. What members receive is simple but powerful; connection, understanding and the chance to feel like themselves again.

The group’s fifth birthday celebration was made even more special by a cake donated by Milly’s Cakehouse in Dartford, the same local baker who generously made the cake for the group’s launch five years ago.

As the group looks to the future, the birthday event also marked the launch of Your Community Lottery fundraising for Kindness Community. It gives people a simple way to support work that is making a real difference close to home.

For just £1 a week, supporters can enter for the chance to win up to £10,000, while helping Kindness Community CIC continue its vital work supporting people facing some of life’s hardest moments.

Every ticket sold helps keep sessions running, supports outreach projects, and helps ensure more people can find comfort, kindness and community when they need it most.

“It’s incredible to see how far the ripples of kindness have spread,” Laura added. “What started as a small local idea has become something that helps people not just here in Dartford, but far beyond. It shows what can happen when kindness leads the way.”

At a time when more people than ever are struggling quietly, the group hopes the local community will see that this support matters, because it helps ordinary people through extraordinary challenges. The people being helped are neighbours, parents, carers, workers, friends and families who are having a tough time. Behind The Smile: Shining A Light On Maternal Mental Health

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 takes place from 4–10 May, with World Maternal Mental Health Day on 6 May. It is a UK-led campaign dedicated to raising awareness of mental health challenges during pregnancy and the first years after birth.

Maternal (or perinatal) mental health refers to emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and up to two years after giving birth. For many, this period is joyful. But it can also bring significant psychological strain. Recent UK data shows that a large proportion of mothers report feeling overwhelmed, with many experiencing anxiety or depression during early parenthood. Conditions such as anxiety, depression, postnatal depression, and post-traumatic stress can affect parents from all backgrounds.

Despite this, maternal mental health problems often go unrecognised. Stigma, lack of awareness and limited access to services can prevent people from seeking help. Many mothers report feeling unheard when raising mental health concerns. It is important to encourage open conversations, empower women to share their experiences and advocate for better care.

Why awareness matters Maternal mental health is not just an individual issue. It affects families and communities. Untreated mental illness can impact bonding with a baby, relationships, and long-term child development. In severe cases, it can have life-threatening consequences with maternal suicide remaining a leading cause of death in the postnatal period.

Raising awareness helps: • Reduce stigma • Normalise seeking help • Improve early identification of mental health problems • Encourage better investment in services and support • Ensure families know where to turn for help Support and recovery Early intervention is crucial in maternal mental health. Recognising the signs is important. These may include persistent low mood, overwhelming anxiety, difficulty bonding with a baby or feeling unable to cope. Partners, families and healthcare professionals all play an important role in noticing changes and offering support. Maternal mental health does not look the same for everyone. Cultural expectations, social isolation and previous mental health history can influence how symptoms present. By encouraging open, non-judgemental conversations and acting early, we can ensure more mothers receive timely care and support when they most need it.

The key message is that support is available and recovery is possible. In the UK, help is available through GPs, midwives, health visitors, specialist perinatal mental health teams and talking therapies. Peer support networks and community groups also play a vital role, offering safe spaces for parents to share experiences and feel less isolated.

How you can get involved Everyone can play a part in supporting maternal mental health: • Start conversations with friends, family, or colleagues • Share information and resources on social media • Attend local or online events during the maternal mental health week • Check in on new or expectant parents By raising awareness, listening to lived experiences and improving access to care we can ensure that no parent feels alone during one of life’s most important and challenging stages. Dementia: Six Scenarios

By Christina Uppenkamp Home Instead 1.The Scenario: A person struggling to count money to pay for things or is struggling to find their wallet/debit card What’s going on?

Money management skills are often amongst the first to be a challenge when a person has dementia. Regularly losing a wallet or purse, or the money inside it, is common and can cause the person with dementia anxiety, particularly if they are prone to paranoia or suspicious thoughts. Having trouble counting change or being able to recognise different coins and notes can also become more and more difficult.

2.The Scenario: A person looks lost on the street What’s going on?

There can be a number of reasons why a person living with dementia can appear to be walking around without purpose: • They could be continuing a habit, relieving boredom, or using up extra energy.

• Walking can relieve pain or discomfort and can be a distraction if they’re having problems sleeping or are feeling anxious.

• They may feel lost in their current environment, want to revisit a familiar place, or are seeking fulfilment.

3. The Scenario: A person out in inappropriate clothing (slippers on a rainy day) What’s going on?

The person living with dementia may not recognise or comprehend what the weather is like, they may no longer associate snow with being cold for example. This may lead to them not wearing appropriate clothing for the situation.

4. The Scenario: A person shouting and arguing with themselves What’s going on?

People with dementia can find it hard to understand what’s going on around them and may interpret their surroundings in a different way than we would. This can be confusing and frightening for them. It may be that they are afraid and trying to escape from someone or something, real or perceived or to stop feeling distressed and to feel calmer again.

5. The Scenario: A person walking in a non-pedestrian location What’s going on?

Like most people, a person with living dementia may want to spend time walking. Walking is good exercise and can help relieve stress and boredom. However, sometimes people living with dementia, lose the ability to judge where they can and can’t walk. Worst case scenario they could end up on a motorway or busy road that isn’t pedestrianised.

6. The Scenario: When in conversation, relaying what sounds like a bizarre story or experience (this could be due to where the person is in their reality, which can be very different to ours).

What’s going on?

When it comes to individuals living with dementia, making up stories can simply be a way to fill in the memory gaps. This does not mean the person is being intentionally manipulative. They are simply using this as a creative coping mechanism.

How should you deal with these scenarios • Get close enough that you’re able to hear each other and make eye contact, but not so close that you’re in their personal space or are making them feel uncomfortable. Try not to approach from behind, try and always approach from in front of the person.

• When speaking to someone potentially living with dementia, try short, simple sentences and leave plenty of time for an answer- patience is often rewarded. Always rephrase as opposed to repeating what they cannot understand.

• Make sure your body language is relaxed and open.

• Speak calmly and clearly, adapt to how the person is reacting to you.

• Try and avoid long, complicated questions.

• Do not disagree with them, rather go into their reality. If their reality is upsetting them try and find a way of changing the topic of conversation.

• Stay with them if possible and try to help them stay calm. Reassure them as many times as necessary that you’re there to help – by building trust, you may be able to find out more information from them.

• Contact the police as soon as possible to report that you believe you’ve found a vulnerable person.

• It may help to wait with them in a café, shop or other public place so they feel safe.

Gathering Nuts in May Written by Colin Fantham (author of The Road to Fear & Other Tales of Intrigue)

Rosie Heverson was becoming impatient. It was expected that her sitter would be on time. As a professional portrait artist, it was important that she utilise the available natural light that shone through the large studio window, as it would only be a few hours before it would begin to fade. Although most of the painting was near completion, there were a few touches needed here and there to finish the job. As with most creative people, Rosie was a perfectionist and had been since she was a child, over forty years ago.

Esther Jane Solomon let herself into the studio, as she had done countless times before for her portrait. She was a frail old lady who used a silver topped walking cane to support her infirmity. Wearing the same sleeveless floral dress, as mutually agreed, she sat at the armchair, and struck her usual pose. It was important to her, for posterity, that her image be captivated in oils for future generations. ‘So sorry I’m late,’ she said. ‘It was quite a struggle to get out from my slumber today.’

‘Quite alright,’ replied Rosie, smiling but mildly irritated. She set to work straight away.

‘Everybody seems to be in such a hurry these days, don’t you think?’

‘Hmm…’ Rosie nodded her head vaguely. She was engrossed in her work.

‘Running around like headless chickens,’ Esther continued. ‘Too busy and impatient to enjoy their moment in the sun – gathering nuts in May, you might say.’

Rosie didn’t quite understand the analogy. ‘You’re right,’ she replied, strategically, in order to keep her sitter at ease.

‘When I think back over my long life, I count my blessings. I was lucky. Others were less fortunate. It’s important to value your freedom, isn’t it?’ She didn’t wait for an answer, before continuing, ‘I lost so many members of my family during my youth. Although I was so very young, I still have vivid dreams. I see their faces, even now. It’s as if I travel back in time. But I know that’s not possible.’

Rosie could feel the sadness in Esther’s tone. ‘You’ve lived a long life. You should be proud.’

‘Oh, I am proud,’ replied Esther. ‘Although perhaps a little guilty…’

‘Guilty?’

‘I know I shouldn’t… but it’s human nature, I suppose.’

Rosie didn’t understand – how could she? ‘You have nothing to feel guilty about,’ she said.

‘You know,’ said Esther, ‘when I think back on my long life, it’s a testament from a time when there was a great unrest in the world, and that even in the darkest of days it’s possible for light to shine through great adversity. Many have not been as fortunate. I think 46

of those who were lost before their time, every day. And that is the cross I bear...’

Rosie noticed that Esther was slowly falling asleep. Her eyes had become heavy. She was such an elderly lady. So full of spirit.

She must be exhausted. She had sat in this studio for weeks on end and, now that the portrait was virtually finished, she could sleep peacefully, safe in the knowledge that her story would be told through this image on a canvas. An image that would last forever.

While Esther slept soundly, Rosie worked hard to fully complete the portrait. Her determination to satisfy Esther’s need to be remembered was now paramount. She could tell that time was of the essence. Her brushstroke was more pronounced than ever, more… impactful.

Rosie knew, instinctively, that Esther had passed from this world. She continued in her endeavour to create a portrait that would never be forgotten. It must never be forgotten, she concluded. There was just one additional thing to add to the portrait, and that was the faded row of tattooed numbers that were on Esther’s forearm. That was her testament. Proof that she had lived a life, despite the horrors that she had witnessed and endured from when she was a young girl, all those years ago.

Rosie suddenly realised the meaning of Esther’s analogy earlier that day, and the wisdom of it made her smile.

What does good mental health actually look like?

By Louise Garner, MBACP Integrative Counsellor Mental Health Awareness Week takes place this year from 11th–17th May, led by the Mental Health Foundation. The purpose is to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and, most importantly, encourage meaningful action to support mental wellbeing for everyone.

In practical terms, what does “good mental health” actually look like in everyday life?

It’s not about feeling happy all the time or having everything under control. Nor does it mean living without challenges. Life will always bring its share of ups and downs.

Good mental health is more about how we respond when those moments arise. We all experience stress, anxiety, sadness, and frustration, it’s part of being human. What matters is our ability to recognise those feelings and find ways to manage them.

Developing that awareness helps us build resilience. It reminds us that, even in difficult moments, we have choices in how we respond. Life can feel overwhelming at times, and unexpected challenges can catch us off guard. By understanding our emotional triggers and working through them, we become better equipped to navigate whatever comes next.

It’s natural to want to avoid uncomfortable feelings—to push them aside and carry on, however, when emotions are ignored or buried, they don’t disappear. Over time, they can build up and feel even harder to manage. Giving ourselves permission to acknowledge and process those feelings can make a real difference.

Good mental health also isn’t about having all your ducks in a row or “together.” Adapting to let one of those ducks step out of line, take a rest, go on a detour is fine, you can always pick it up later, when you have time and capacity.

Looking after your mental health means recognising your limits and prioritising rest. Sleep, nourishing food, time outdoors, and meaningful connections with others all play an important role in supporting wellbeing.

And importantly, making time for yourself is not selfish, it’s necessary. Life is often filled with responsibilities and expectations, but rest shouldn’t be something we have to earn. It’s essential, not optional.

So, where do you go from here?

Take a moment to reflect on how you respond to stress and anxiety. Are your coping strategies supporting your wellbeing, or could they be holding you back? Is it healthy? Does it promote good mental health, or is it self-sabotaging or harming?

Do you allow yourself space to process difficult emotions, or do you tend to put them aside for another day?

Do you feel supported, or are there areas in your life where you might need a little more help? If so, what might that support look like, and where could it come from?

Good mental health isn’t a fixed destination, it’s an ongoing process that we all need to nurture over time.

If you ever feel overwhelmed, reaching out to a professional service or helpline can be an important and positive step.

So Let’s go Running (SLGR) SLGR is a local running club with structured training sessions designed to improve runners speed and stamina.
