Industry professionals invited to daytime cleaning conference in Brussels European cleaning professionals are being invited to an event in Brussels to discuss the ongoing development of daytime cleaning. This meeting is organised within the framework of the EU-funded ‘Fair Working Time Matters’ project.

Taking place over two days - June 12 and 13 - the event is designed to bring together clients, employers and trade unions. June 12 will see the hosting of a conference to discuss the current situation, while on June 13 there will be a working meeting to develop a plan going forward.

The meeting receives funding from the European Commission so travel and accommodation expenses can be reimbursed in accordance with latest EU guidelines. Translation will also be provided by interpreters.

‘CMR classification of ethanol would have critical consequences’ A.I.S.E. - the pan-European body representing the detergents and maintenance products industry - says recognising ethanol’s essential role in infection control and public health is vital for maintaining effective and safe disinfecting practices.

This is in response to news the European Commission is considering reclassifying ethanol as a carcinogenic and reproductive toxicant chemical (CMR) in proposals under the BPR and CLP Regulations. If classified as CMR, ethanol would be banned for use in biocidal products such as hand and surface disinfectants.

Potential ban “We are very concerned about the impact of a potential ban of ethanol on the EU market and we are calling on the European authorities to recognise the essential role of ethanol. It

should remain classified based on its realworld, biocidal use, rather than being inaccurately compared to alcohol consumption,” urged A.I.S.E. director general Alexis Van Maercke.

A.I.S.E. says ethanol is the most effective substance to fight a broad spectrum of organisms from bacteria to non-enveloped viruses like polio.

It is also the most effective and available disinfectant against healthcare-associated infections and there is no viable alternative it stresses.

The organisation also argues

that ethanol is safe for the environment, comes mainly from renewable sources, is fully biodegradable, leaves no residue on surfaces, evaporates quickly.

“A.I.S.E. will continue its efforts to advocate for ethanol to remain classified based on its real-world, biocidal use,

rather than being inaccurately compared to alcohol consumption,” it concluded.

“We must avoid an unjustified reclassification that does not positively impact citizens and public health, while negatively impacting European industry.” www.aise.eu/ethanol

BICSc to organise youth event The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) has announced a new event aimed at encouraging the next generation to consider careers within the professional cleaning industry.

The inaugural BICSc Youth Event will take place on July 9 in Birmingham and will shine a spotlight on the varied career opportunities in the cleaning sector and facilities management industry. It will be hosted in collaboration with Youth Employment UK (YEUK).

Neil Spencer-Cook explained: “This event is designed to give young people a comprehensive understanding of the diverse job roles available after leaving school, college, or university.

Those attending will leave with a clearer picture of the multiple career paths that await them, and the skills needed to succeed.

“It underscores our commitment to being a youthfriendly, industry-friendly organisation that values its local community and the opportunities within it.”

Purus Innovation Award open

Entries for the Purus Innovation Award (PIA) 2025 - founded by the organisers of the CMS Berlin exhibition which takes place this September - are now open.

All exhibitors and co-exhibitors are eligible to take part. There are six categories: Cleaning Machines, Robotics/AI (new for 2025), Equipment, Washroom Hygiene, Digital Tools and Systems and Cleaning Agents.

will evaluate the entries and announce the 18 finalists in July. The winners will then be revealed on September 23 during the CMS exhibition.

Tork achieves first certification in Design for All

Essity brand Tork has announced the Tork dispenser development process is the first in the world to be certified according to the Design for All standard (EN 17161). This approach aims to make hygiene in public spaces accessible for the majority of users.

“We are committed to making public hygiene accessible to the majority of users by working to eliminate visible and invisible barriers to hygiene,” explained Kristian Grennfelt, global brand innovation director, professional hygiene, Essity.

“Washrooms are the busiest rooms in a building, and when businesses provide washrooms designed to meet the needs of many, it not only improves their reputation but also improves their overall business. In fact, nearly 90 per cent of people say it’s important for them to have

easy access to hygiene in public, particularly in the washroom.

It’s clear that providing inclusive hygiene in washrooms is good for people and for business.”

Applying design for all principles to the Tork dispenser development process helps reduce barriers to hygiene for users with a range of conditions, capabilities, neuro-diversities, general hygiene concerns and in various stages of life.

Easy access to hygiene For example, the Tork PeakServe range of hand towel dispensers was designed with low pull force, accommodating people with varying hand strength, such as children, and is certified as Easy to Use by the Swedish Rheumatism Association.

“Designing better products for all users - including cleaning and

maintenance staff - is a longheld philosophy that has always guided our way of working,” Grennfelt continued.

Essity began pursuing certification according to the Design for All standard in 2020, even though no organisations were accredited to certify it at the time. Its commitment to obtaining Design for All certification resulted in RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, an independent state-owned research institute, becoming the first to be accredited and able to offer the certification.

UK record Latest figures published by the British Cleaning Council (BCC) show the value of the cleaning, hygiene and waste industry jumped by more than 10 per cent in 12 months to reach a record-breaking figure of nearly £66.9 billion.

The industry figures for 2022 are the highest ever recorded and mark a strong recovery after the pandemic, during which the sector’s contribution to the UK economy dipped to £57 billion in 2020 and only recovered slowly to £59.8 billion in 2021.

The figures also show employment in the cleaning, hygiene and waste sector increasing from 1.47 million to 1.49 million. This equates to around five per cent of the UK workforce, maintaining the industry as a top 10 employer.

The BCC published the figures in its annual report, which is available free on request. It includes detailed statistics on areas such as numbers of migrants in the workforce, flexible working arrangements, recruitment, skills and health and safety.

Some of the findings include that the number of sector businesses has increased year-on-year since 2013, when 47,665 companies were in operation. Today, there are more than 77,535. Nearly nine in 10 (89 per cent) are micro businesses, employing less than 10 individuals.

Antibiotic-resistant superbug circulates in Malaysian hospital A virulent strain of an antibioticresistant superbug has been found circulating in a Malaysian hospital. And it is posing a significant challenge to global public health, says a study.

Acinetobacter baumannii infections have been identified at the main tertiary hospital in Terengganu, Malaysia. Typically found in healthcare settings, A. baumannii can cause infections in the blood, lungs, urinary tracts and wounds.

Researchers discovered the majority of Malaysian A. baumannii infections are resistant to multiple antibiotics, with most resistant to carbapenems which are the drugs of choice for these types of infections.

The international research team also found that 97 per cent of the bacterial samples carried plasmids - tiny DNA ‘toolkits’ that help to spread antibiotic

resistance. The strain has been listed by the World Health Organization as a critical priority antibiotic-resistant pathogen due to its ability to resist antibiotic treatment.

“Understanding how the disease evolves is critical in helping to prevent the spread of disease, as well as developing and optimising treatments,” said the study’s co-author Dr David Cleary. “A. baumannii keeps evolving new resistance tricks, and low- and middle-income countries need more tools to track it.

“There’s an urgent need for continuous surveillance and the development of effective treatment protocols.”

The Center for Disease Control advises patients and caregivers to keep their hands clean by regularly washing with soap and water or to use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

Lyreco acquires cleaning brands Global distributor of workplace products and services Lyreco has announced the acquisition of two UK cleaning and hygiene brands from Diversey - Zenith Hygiene and Shorrock Trichem. Financial terms of the transaction with Diversey’s owner Solenis were not disclosed.

Lyreco called the acquisition a strategic move that would further expand its presence in the rapidly growing hygiene

category and drive market share growth.

“Both Zenith Hygiene and Shorrock Trichem achieved profitability in 2024 and are well positioned for continued success,” Lyreco said in a press release. “By integrating their market leadership with Lyreco’s operational excellence, this acquisition enhances value, innovation and sustainable solutions for customers.”

Appifying cleaning – connecting a remote workforce

In cleaning, connecting a widespread workforce can be difficult, especially if the technology used is clunky and ineffective. Ricky Majer, CTO at facilities services provider SBFM explores the benefits of ‘appification’ - custombuilt applications that give cleaning operatives accessible communication methods, flexible working options and new learning opportunities.

In an industry as dynamic and fundamental as cleaning, connecting a widespread workforce is essential, but it has historically been fraught with difficulty. Although technology is becoming more at home in facilities management, the industry has lagged somewhat behind the integration of others, such as the finance industry.

When people can be so well connected globally thanks to platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, why not apply the connective principles to a dispersed cleaning workforce?

When cleaning operatives are deployed at sites throughout the country, they can find it near-impossible to connect with remote managers, and even harder to communicate their queries and concerns.

Operatives often don’t feel a sense of belonging in the companies they are employed by. In UKG’s perspectives from the frontline 2024 report, over 51 per cent of respondents felt as though they were treated like

a number, rather than a person.

Despite these connection issues, many cleaning providers are still relying on outdated forms of contact such as posters, text messages and emails.

Previously, corporate technology has required extensive training for initial use, and can, quite frankly, still be difficult to operate. And adoption and usage efficiencies are worsened when employees are spread out and training is sparse, often without access to desktops or laptops. These concerns need to be addressed, and the remedy? Appification.

Clear communication A first thought for many might be to adopt an already-popular application designed for easy consumer use. WhatsApp, for example, has become a popular tool for managers and operatives to connect. However, it still requires a manual, time-consuming process of managers reaching out to each worker to see if, for example, they are available for a shift.

That process can be clunky and doesn’t allow operatives to see all opportunities available.

Appification is revolutionary, it can connect a cleaning workforce via a bespoke, user-friendly and intuitive app. If configured correctly, singular, streamlined app services that are used like Facebook and Instagram can transform information sharing and communication among colleagues. It can bridge the

void between frontline workers and management, as well as modernise administration such as sharing shift rotas, managing holiday requests and distributing payslips.

For those who do not speak English as their first language, built-in translation options allow operatives to receive information in their native language. Cleaning companies need to think about their workforce and their varying needs, to ask themselves “What can we do to simplify things?”

Increased earning potential Organisations need an ‘Uberised’ app service where cleaning operatives can see and choose extra shifts available in their local area. Making these shifts easy to view and accept significantly increases their earning potential. This is an efficient way for the cleaning providers to fill vacant shifts and deliver on promises to clients.

Custom-developed apps with this ‘Uberised’ interface can use algorithmic learning tools to concisely show workers extra shifts that align with their preferences within the geographical area they are willing to work in. The catered technology gives operatives the best flexibility around their dayto-day needs, like whether they have studies or need to attend the school run.

Appification of this nature can significantly reduce administration time, increase earning potential for cleaning operatives, and allow employers to provide a more streamlined service to clients and scale up as required. It is also a springboard for more sustainable practices as operatives can reduce travel resources used by opting for shifts in their local area.

Flexibility is vital to the modern cleaning service delivery landscape as clients navigate their own industry opportunities and threats. Cleaning providers need to be agile and ready to adapt, so technology is fundamental.

Supporting development Upskilling is another significant advantage of userintuitive employee applications.

Gamified learning platforms can be integrated to enable operatives to track their progress, gain certifications and upskill to unlock new opportunities. This can also be measured through easily trackable systems, like a rating section that highlights all skills learned and what operatives can focus on to improve.

By delivering fun training materials straight into the hands of operatives, compliance can be monitored and personal and professional development improved.

Perfectly app-t Inspiration from consumer apps designed to make life easier should be adopted for corporate use. We need to meet people where they are. To do that, the cleaning industry should be leveraging app interfaces that frontline workers are already familiar with and using them to create a thriving community.

Providing these streamlined services to operatives and in turn, clients, will rid the industry of clunky administration processes and wasted time.

It’s about time that custombuilt platforms are developed with the needs of our frontline workers in mind. With them, we could revolutionise the industry.

Regulations matter when buying cleaning chemicals Climate change is a big issue facing us all. Businesses are working hard to operate sustainably, putting in place initiatives designed to cut carbon emissions and make sure their operations and products and services have a minimal impact on the environment.

The challenge is how to operate sustainably in the current economic environment, writes Lorcan Mekitarian, chair of the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) in the UK. Businesses are facing a range of obstacles. The global economy is experiencing a slowdown. There are supply chain disruptions, the war in Ukraine continues to have an impact on energy prices and the conflict in the Middle East is restricting global trade. There is also uncertainty about the impact of Trump presidency in the US. Navigating these competing pressures is not easy. Buyers and end users are looking for low-cost environmentallyfriendly solutions. Unsurprisingly, environmental messages can be seductive, particularly when they are coupled with highly competitive prices. In the regulated arena of cleaning chemicals, it is difficult to produce products that do the job, have a minimal impact on the environment and are sustainable.

It takes years of investment and testing to get the products right and clear the regulatory hurdles.

It’s not surprising, therefore, that some organisations are looking

for short cuts.

The doors were opened for this type of sharp practice in the pandemic. At that time, demand for cleaning and hygiene products, in particular cleaning chemicals and hand sanitisers, soared. All sorts of companies with no, or at best tangential expertise, began to produce these products, making extraordinary and unjustifiable claims for their efficacy. We got used to moving at pace and accepting product claims with little or no interrogation.

The argument then, that there was little time for verification, is playing out in the climate change arena today. Some say technology is moving so fast there is no time for independent verification or regulation.

Pause for a moment and let that argument sink in. The suggestion is that the need for some kind of environmentally sustainable solutions far outstrips the need to know if the solution is indeed environmentally sustainable, if it works or how to use it to be certain it is safe. These companies use gobble-de-gook or undefined phrases like ‘nonrenewable chemicals’, ‘chemicalfree’, ‘natural’ and ‘non-toxic’ to promote their products.

Regulations, however, matter.

They guarantee safety. They underpin transparency and ensure consistency. They provide a framework for comparison, so a buyer really knows if they are getting the product or solution they need.

They also provide accountability, giving buyers a route to recourse if needed. In short, they underwrite an ethical approach.

As the number of companies promoting unsubstantiated environmental claims for their products grew, buyers of cleaning chemicals started to ask our members how they can identify, understand and validate these claims. In response we developed practical advice, produced a glossary of key terms and published a White Paper, titled The Evolution and Regulation of Cleaning Chemicals.

Ask for verification Our advice to anyone buying cleaning chemicals is always to look for independent verification and to make sure the supplier has the relevant regulatory approval. For example, the term ‘biodegradable’ as it is applied to cleaning products, is defined in current legislation (Detergent Regulation (EC) No 648/2004 and corresponding UK post Brexit legislation). Something claiming to be ‘organic’ should be certified by, for example, the Soil Association. ‘Net-zero’ claims should be based on the international net-zero standard (sciencebasedtargets.org/netzero) or another reliable third party verified certification.

The glossary of key terms gives buyers the information they need to understand the real meaning of different phrases and know how to challenge the validity of a claim.

The White Paper was written

by Peter Thistlethwaite, technical manager - cosmetics and biocides at MSL Solution Providers. Peter is a microbiologist and MSL Solution Providers offers an integrated regulatory and laboratory testing service. Its in-house accredited microbiology and virology laboratories provide a comprehensive range of standard tests, including efficacy testing against bacteria, fungi, spores, viruses, mycobacteria, legionella, and algae.

The White Paper explains the evolution of cleaning chemicals.

It explains how testing systems with recognised methodologies were introduced to “to prove chemicals were effective but hand-in-hand they gave a way to remove fraudulent products, offering better protections”. As Peter says in the White Paper, “when a product makes claims of safety or eco friendliness that seems too good to be true it may well be.”

Cleaning routines out of space

Inspecting complex environments

ECJ’s Lotte Printz talks to Danish astrophysicist and podcast host Tina Ibsen on how to clean a space station.

John Griep in the Netherlands highlights the importance of consistency in inspection procedures.

If you ever had the thought that cleaning while in a weightless state, free from handling heavy cleaning trolleys or other physical strain, would be bliss, you might think again. There’s absolutely nothing to envy astronauts when it comes to cleaning in outer space, and being weightless probably does considerably more harm to the body than any cleaning job on Earth. And so does the space station environment they are part of for several months.

However, this doesn’t mean that there’s nothing for the cleaning industry to learn from the ISS – i.e. the International Space Station.

Weekly clean Astrophysicist Tina Ibsen, who is also a host on the podcast Space Talk (in translation) and the author of several books on astronomical phenomena, was invited to give a talk and a compelling insight into ‘life’ in space at the annual spring seminar for the Danish cleaning industry in March.

“Everything that takes place on the space station is for the benefit of humankind.

Astronauts are merely janitors, laboratory assistants and human guinea pigs,” she says with a smile, speaking to ECJ in its wake.

However, one of their weekly tasks is for their own good as well. Every Saturday all astronauts on the ISS are scheduled to clean for two hours. Mainly cleansing the air vents which, in a ‘chaotic’ weightless environment, are easily filled with old human hair, dead skin, eyelashes and food debris among other things, using vacuum cleaners and wet wipes, as it is vital they are not obstructed.

“Using a vacuum cleaner is not the hard part. Being weightless is. It’s hard physical work simply to be in space, not being able to use your muscles. The muscles

diminish, including the heart muscle. And due to the lack of gravity, liquid moves from our legs upwards. So, we say about astronauts that they have skinny legs and puffy heads,” Ibsen explains.

Before going to the space station, astronauts are kept in quarantine for two weeks to leave any diseases behind. And every piece of equipment sent to the space station is either disinfected or irradiated, preventing the spread of viruses. Recent research suggests, however, that space stations may actually be too clean and sterile, which has a negative impact on astronauts’ health.

“That is one of the great problems of staying at the ISS. Immune systems weaken and it often causes skin problems.

Microbial diversity actually helps humans, but it has to be the right microorganisms, of course,” Tina Ibsen says and points out that this is beneficial knowledge applicable in hospital cleaning. If hospitals are excessively clean, patients may acquire immunerelated health problems such as rashes and cold sores.

Useful knowledge Denmark is blessed with a high-profile astronaut, Andreas Mogensen, who was on the ISS in both 2015 and 2022 where he was testing water filtration membranes for a Danish company as part of his mission.

The results of which may also prove useful for the cleaning industry in the future.

Getting rid of dust does not play a major role in space, though. Quite the contrary in fact.

“In space dust is a good thing.

Space is full of dust. In fact, dust is the actual reason why we humans exist as we are made of star dust that comes from supernova explosions,” the scientist explains to the ignorant reporter with a big smile!

Quality assurance in professional cleaning services increasingly occurs in environments with fragmented locations, variable usage patterns and a mix of cleaning contracts. Recent field experiences highlight the importance of methodological consistency and practical adaptability in inspection procedures; especially in dispersed, multibuilding contracts.

Redefining units Traditional inspection methodology is based on a consistent sequence: inventory, coding, classification, and random sampling. While this works in compact, single-site locations, multi-site contracts - such as those covering dozens or even hundreds of residential buildings or office units - pose new challenges. Travel time, logistical coordination and layout variability impact inspection efficiency.

Field data show that in one real-life case, a contract covering 125 locations resulted in 29 visits and over four hours of inspection effort, of which only a fraction was spent on actual cleaning quality assessment.

A methodological adjustment - specifically, redefining the concept of a ‘space’ - helped streamline the process. By aggregating residential buildings into so-called ‘location-units’ for coding purposes, the number of site visits was reduced to six, cutting inspection time by half without sacrificing sampling reliability. This adaptation demonstrates the need for flexibility within existing quality frameworks such as the Dutch VSR-KMS system.

Randomness and clarity Consistent application of random sampling procedures remains essential. Even minor deviations from agreed inspection protocols can undermine the statistical validity of quality assessments. This reinforces the need for strict adherence to VSR-KMS guidelines during field inspections. Inspectors stress the importance of following

sampling rules rigorously to ensure assessments remain objective and reproducible.

Another recurring point from the field relates to the interpretation of user contact points.

For example, integrated power sockets in desks or towel dispensers. Which components fall within the scope of daily cleaning? A consensus is emerging: only clearly exposed and frequently touched surfaces are subject to routine inspection, unless otherwise specified in the programme or inventory.

Differentiating contracts Inspectors report increasing ambiguity at the intersection of outcome-based and input-based cleaning contracts.

While outcome-based cleaning seems attractive, it demands clear agreements on outcomes, expected pollution levels and cleaning frequencies. In dynamic environments such as schools, awareness of the precise cleaning moment is vital to differentiate between recontamination and cleaning performance.

Challenging-to-clean areas such as locker segments, drain covers or sandy floors also require precise documentation. If such elements are not explicitly included in the cleaning specification, they cannot be scored during inspection, even if dirty. However, inspectors remain responsible for reporting anomalies and providing actionable recommendations.

The role of floor plans Although not formally required, building floor plans greatly enhance the inspector’s ability to define spatial boundaries and assign surface-related findings.

In multi-storey buildings, they provide critical support for locating problem areas and ensuring consistent assessments.

These findings emphasise the need to further integrate practical tools and flexible frameworks into existing quality systems, ensuring robust and efficient inspection practices across diverse environments.

A little imagination needed?

Daytime cleaning study published

Lynn Webster in the UK on how the challenges resulting from unavoidable rising costs can be met.

As Katja Scholz in Germany reports, the topic of daytime cleaning is being widely discussed.

The beginning of April sparked some considerable activity in the UK with the increase in minimum wage to £12.21 (€14.37) per hour but more so with the most dramatic hike in employers’ national insurance contributions. The main change was an increase in the rate from 13.8 per cent up to 15 per cent. The threshold (the point at which employers become liable for national insurance contributions) was reduced from £9,100 (€10,710) to £5,000 (€5885).

The British Chamber of Commerce report 82 per cent of the companies they surveyed said the rises will negatively impact on their business, will discourage their recruitment by 58 per cent and raise their prices by 54 per cent.

Daytime cleaning is a topic which crops up increasingly in questionnaires, discussions and studies relating to the contract cleaning sector – and rightly so, as there are numerous advantages as well as reservations to consider and it is certainly an approach more suitable for some companies and their employees than for others.

The Institute of Labour Economics has recently published a study commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) in which just under 270 contract cleaning companies took part.

The aim of the study was to collect current data on the allocation of working time and the extent of daytime cleaning in the contract cleaning sector. The investigation took place in 2023.

The results showed cleaning is currently carried out both during the day and outside office hours (early morning and evening) as well as at night. Outside office hours and nighttime cleaning predominates (still). Daytime cleaning is particularly in demand for offices and industrial buildings but less often for shops, stations, airports or administration buildings.

So why is that? Around three quarters of cleaning companies have a positive attitude towards daytime cleaning. They are aware it reflects very largely the working time preferences of their employees and also contributes to a higher level of customer satisfaction. More than two thirds of the firms questioned even admit they welcome tender requests for daytime cleaning and would prefer such procurement policies. There is also an economic argument for this: on the one hand, daytime cleaning may involve more time and therefore higher costs, but on the other hand it avoids surcharges for nighttime working – there are, however, as yet no reliable figures to back this up.

There is also the health aspect to be considered: according to

Freeze on plans This has hit the FM and hospitality sectors with their reliance commonly on significant increases in employment cost with higher payroll cost; hiring practices and wage increases.

The impact has been felt across the board, forcing some companies to face restructuring the business, curtailing investment in technology, new projects, training people, growth and sustainability initiatives, A freeze on recruitment plans with cleaning and FM service providers reconsidering the viability of some low margin contracts. The economic pressures may erode contract profitability and make maintaining service quality unsustainable.

There will be an overall refocus on service delivery. This may also create opportunities for those service providers willing to adapt, innovate and align themselves with the inevitable changes.

In hospitality service outcomes are being reduced. Reports have included hotels considering removing some guest amenities as standard - the need to request a facecloth normally provided; individual high quality branded products being replaced with refillable containers in

washrooms/bathrooms; the evening turn-down service only on request rather than the norm with the gift of a chocolate placed on the pillow being removed completely.

Commercially, service providers are questioning their ability to provide those added value but uncharged-for extras that signified the enhanced service.

Reputation may be the casualty of such cost driven measures.

So it was refreshing, if rather surprising to find a healthcare service provider entering into a full hotel service project offering the hotel experience for their patients. Additions have included: guest amenity packs provided on arrival with quality products in a what could become a highly coveted wash bag; dressing gowns and slippers; top branded teas/coffees suitably arranged for a welcoming impact; interactive TV screens highlighting the services on offer; privacy protected hotel style trolleys with branded covers for patient personal items on ‘check in’ re just the start. Such a great vision, especially when a patient‘s choice for personally selected hospitals for their care become a norm in the future.

Need to invest This highlights the need to be careful in these challenging times when it is all too easy to recoup extra cost being incurred with a drop in service provision. We need to act decisively, invest in efficiency measures, upskill the workforce and focus ourselves on innovation.

Losing sight of this for shortterm knee-jerk resolution will likely result in greater losses in the future.

occupational health studies, nighttime working combined with the increasing workload can lead to a growing negative impact on the health of workers. This includes a higher than average number of mental health problems, cardiovascular diseases and accidents at work.

The sector is also experiencing, by comparison with other sectors, the highest number of working days lost due to sickness or injury. On the flip side, some employees prefer working at night or outside office hours as this fits in better with their family responsibilities.

However, daytime cleaning is not yet all that widespread, even in the private sector. This points to another conclusion of the study: companies whose employees work mainly at night or during out of office hours have a higher staff turnover.

More daytime cleaning could therefore help to increase the attractiveness of this field of work and improve staff retention. For the results highlight a further problem in the sector: almost 50 per cent of employees are over 50 years old, which presents long-term challenges in relation to staff recruitment.

In nine out of 10 companies, the proportion of employees under 30 is even less than 20 per cent.

Further disadvantages presented by daytime cleaning are that it may interrupt the flow of work or create too much noise, possibly even necessitating special agreements between cleaning staff, clients and their employees, which could again lead to increasing costs.

So what can be done to encourage more daytime cleaning? First and foremost, steps need to be taken to increase its economic advantages and to make appropriate adjustments to the procurement practices of public sector clients; since the study clearly shows a good 80 per cent of firms already recognise the importance of making daytime cleaning available for their employees.

The industry is seeing an increase in more specialist aspects, reports Anna Garbagna from Italy.

The solar panel cleaning sector is booming, fuelled by the increase in photovoltaic installations in France. Thanks to some state subsidies (incentives, reduced VAT rate) and current regulations, this niche market is attracting more and more cleaning companies. Some are targeting small areas with conventional equipment, while others, such as Airia Services in Nantes and PH Plus in Ille-et-Vilaine, are investing in robotisation for larger areas.

Photovoltaic solar energy is a promising alternative solution for energy production.

The Energy and Climate Act of 2019, followed by the Climate and Resilience Act of 2021 and the Aper Act of 2023, requires the installation of photovoltaic panels on new commercial and industrial buildings, increasing the demand for cleanliness.

Especially since poorly cleaned panels can lead to a loss of production of between 20 and 30 per cent.

Aldric de Rosny of Airia Services points out that their business started in response to requests from municipalities seeking maintenance services.

This market has grown thanks to the rapid growth of installations. As a result, solar projects are springing up on car parks and the roofs of various build-

ings, such as supermarkets and agricultural buildings - often motivated by environmental and economic reasons.

To meet specific cleaning needs, some companies are turning to robotisation. Airia Services, for instance, has invested in a robot for cleaning large areas, which saves time and makes work less strenuous. This robot, which can work on sloping roofs, uses purified water to avoid lime deposits.

Training necessary Robotisation is not only a matter of efficiency, but also of standards and safety. Operations can be dangerous and specific training is needed to handle the equipment safely.

The market is buoyant, but investments in equipment such as aerial platforms and robots are essential to ensure productivity and meet the expectations of customers such as solar plant operators.

Training is also essential to ensure the safe and efficient use of equipment. Organisations such as INHNI offer specialised courses that combine technical skills and safety issues.

Overall, the solar panel cleaning niche is developing rapidly, fuelled by favourable regulations, the need for regular plant maintenance and technological innovation through robotisation.

The Pandemic has caused a widespread diffusion of sanitisation systems for domestic and working environments, as well as creating the need to establish benchmarks to assess the effectiveness and safety of indoor sanitisation methods.

This situation has led to a search for increasingly specific professions that must be identified and trained.

Hence the need to find a professional body with the ability to manage and select the systems.

It is with this objective in mind that the first edition of the Advanced Training Course for Sanitation Process Managers, organised by the Campus Biomedico University in Rome, in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, has begun.

Improve skills The educational direction has been entrusted to Professor Laura De Gara, who is also prorector for education and deputy vice-chancellor of the Master’s Degree course in Food Science and Human Nutrition, and to Dr Rosa Draisci, former director of the National Centre for Chemical Substances, Cosmetic Products and Consumer Protection of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità. Dr. Lucrezia Lanciotti, researcher at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, was appointed as education manager.

The course is intended as an opportunity to increase the skills of industry professionals, in line with the UNI/PdR 173-2:2025 Reference Practice on the Sanitisation of Indoor Environments, with the addition, in the second part of the course, of the specification of the requirements for the qualification of sanitisation manager and sanitisation operator, in order to obtain a qualification officially recognised

by Accredia.

Methods, techniques and tools for an effective and strategic management of sanitisation in commercial, working and civil environments: this is the objective of the course that officially kicked off in March.

Advanced tech Thanks to these sessions, participants can acquire in-depth knowledge of the industry’s most advanced technologies, reference regulations and best practices for planning and managing activities, with particular attention to staff selection, implementation of company procedures and interfacing with risk management and the company’s protection and prevention service (RSPP).

The course normally takes place in a mixed format with two face-to-face meetings (the initial and final day) and a three-month duration, during which five thematic areas are addressed. Specifically: planning and initiation of sanitisation; operational management of sanitisation; quality, processes and document management; monitoring, control and service improvement; development of human resources in the sanitisation sector.

The course is designed for those who already hold an upper secondary school diploma or a three-year degree and have at least one year’s work experience.

Those who hold at least a three-year degree and complete the course will be awarded a specialist qualification of ‘Sanitisation Process Manager’ with training credit linked to both regular attendance (compulsory for a total of no less than 80 per cent of the lectures in attendance and live streaming) and passing the final test.

Washroom hygiene

The cleanable washroom HYGIENE AND CLEANLINESS are of paramount importance in the awayfrom-home washroom. But toilet blocks are often small, cramped spaces that are notoriously difficult to clean.

The sheer volume of traffic makes it hard for cleaners to stay on top of the task. People are continually entering the premises, too, walking in dirt and adding to the mess.

Paper towels and toilet tissue may end up on the floor where they will become soggy and unsightly. Meanwhile, air dryers could be creating puddles on the floor which will spread any mess created. And other issues might include soap spills on the sinks, fingermarks on taps and grout lines that quickly become grubby.

So, what can be done to address these issues and ease the task of washroom cleaning?

Washrooms present a number of unique cleaning challenges, confirms Essity communications director Jenny Turner.

“In some areas high foot traffic means the washrooms are almost always in use, and this will lead to frequent messes and limited opportunities for thorough cleaning,” she said. “Restricted space is another key concern since it limits the movement of staff and equipment. And the variety of surfaces in a washroom such as mirrors, stainless steel fixtures and porcelain toilets can be a challenge because each one requires a specific cleaning method and the use of different products.”

Moisture and humidity are further issues since the damp environment will promote the growth of mould and mildew, she says. “Washrooms are also often spread out across a large facility which means cleaning staff will be required to move equipment and supplies over long distances and within challenging layouts,” said Turner.

Some of the problems can be tackled at the design stage, she believes. “Incorporating more space from the outset will allow for easier movement and improved access for cleaning staff,” said Turner.

“Providing an adequate level of storage will also reduce the time that needs to be spent on fetching supplies. And continuous surfaces without grout lines will reduce the number of surfaces where dirt and bacteria can accumulate.”

Automatic taps and flush systems will minimise the number of touchpoints and reduce the spread of germs, she says.

“However, while architects play a crucial role in designing cleanable washrooms it is also crucial that washroom providers offer systems that are easy to clean,” said Turner. “Choosing materials that are resistant to stains and easy to disinfect can make a significant difference. And all dispensers should offer a high capacity to support efficiencies in maintaining cleanliness and refill availability.”

Real-time data Regular maintenance and prompt attention to spills and messes can make the task more manageable, she said.

“Sensors may also be used for monitoring traffic because this can change cleaning schedules from regular checks to a datadriven plan that will maximise cleaning staff efficiency.”

Tork Vision Cleaning uses real-time data to identify when and where cleaning is needed, she said. Also claimed to ease the cleaning burden are Tork Colour-Coded microfibre cleaning cloths – said to be highly effective at trapping dirt and bacteria – and Tork Easy Handling packaging for soap and paper supplies which is described as being easy to open, transport and dispose of via recycling channels.

Poor lighting, high traffic and challenging surfaces are among the factors that make a washroom particularly difficult to clean, says Kärcher’s cleaning solutions consultant Gundula Braun.

“There may also be an unpleasant odour present due to insufficient airflow, inadequate AC systems or malfunctions in the drainage system,” she said.

marble tiles with white grouting. Meanwhile, the fact that space is limited makes it difficult to use machines in some areas such as beneath toilet bowls, urinals and sinks and around waste containers.

“Water hardness may be a further issue since this will affect the end result.

And cross-contamination needs to be avoided which means cleaning need to be precise and the right materials need to be provided.”

Almost all washroom cleaning processes need to be carried out manually and operatives are often given a limited amount of time to execute them, she said.

“This may lead to the potential overuse of chemicals because some solutions need time to react on certain surfaces,” said Braun.

“Meanwhile, the time constraints may mean the floors are not always rinsed after cleaning. This will result in a build-up of solution on the floor leading to malodours and a sticky floor feeling, which will be unpleasant for staff and washroom users. And once cleanliness has been compromised, people tend not to care so much about their surroundings and this makes the situation worse, creating a vicious circle.”

“The damp washroom environment can also lead to mould and mildew growth which needs to be tackled with specialised cleaning products,” adds Lovell. “And areas such as light switches, handles and other frequently-touched surfaces must be cleaned regularly to prevent the spread of germs.”

Implementing features such as enhanced space, automatic taps and easyto-clean materials at the design stage can significantly reduce cleaning time, she said. “Continuous surfaces will reduce the number of crevices where dirt and bacteria can build, making cleaner quicker and more thorough,” she said. “And touch-free features will reduce the number of fingermarks while proper ventilation will reduce the risk of mould.”

Cleanology provides operatives with compact cleaning machines, long-handled brushes and microfibre cloths designed to ease the task for the operator. The company also provides products that use biotechnology to remove dirt, grease, grime, scale and odour.

Strenuous The cleaning of toilet bowls is a particularly strenuous task, she said. “This is because an upright body-posture cannot always be assumed while the process is being carried out,” said Braun.

“Washrooms also require a great deal of time-consuming detail work such as cleaning door handles, flush systems, taps, dispensers and light switches. And another challenge will be the cleaning of ‘splash zones” which will be created by careless users or after a bodily accident.”

A sensor-supported system that detects levels in soap, and paper dispensers and waste receptacles can help to make the task more efficient, according to Braun. “All cleaning machines should also be compact in size and support the cleaning of smooth surfaces.”

Kärcher provides machines designed to facilitate floor cleaning in areas with restricted access such as the BR 30/1 Bp and BR 30/4 C scrubber dryers and the SG 4/2 and SG 4/4 steam cleaners. The company also offers surface cleaners, trolleys

Facilities and cleaning companies need to choose products that are designed to keep spaces cleaner from the outset, says Vectair’s vice-president of marketing Chelsey Schwartz.

“Urinal screens are a critical solution in men’s washrooms to keep the area cleaner by reducing splash-back,” she said. “And easy-to-use feminine hygiene units in the women’s toilets will promote a tidy and more hygienic cubicle space.”

Vectair offers a range of urinal screens as well as the Femcare SIMPLE feminine hygiene unit which incorporates antimicrobial technology and scented liners.

Washrooms are high-traffic areas that require frequent cleaning throughout the day, says Cleanology marketing director Kate Lovell.

“The restricted space inside can also make it difficult to operate cleaning equipment and reach all areas,” she said. “And the tiled and grouted surfaces can easily accumulate dirt and grime which means they will require specialised solutions.”

Cleaning the toilets is one of the hardest tasks, she says. “This requires thorough scrubbing and disinfecting to ensure the space is clean and hygienic,” said Lovell.

“Polishing the taps is another tough task because they may accumulate water spots and mineral deposits which will give them a dull appearance.”

So, what are our commentators’ top tips for making a washroom more cleanable?

It is important to establish a regular routine, says Lovell. “Cleaning the space regularly will limit the build-up of dirt and grime and ensure each session is less intensive,” she said. “Specialised equipment such as long-handled brushes and microfibre cloths will ensure all staff are able to clean effectively and reach difficult areas.

High quality products should be used on toilets and grout lines and for removing mould. And thorough training should be provided to all operatives.”

The choice of washroom materials will dictate the ease or otherwise of the challenge, says Kärcher’s Gundula Braun.

“Cleaning trolleys should be compact and well stocked, ideally with pre-moistened wipes and cloths to reduce the risk of cross-contamination and improve performance,” she said. “And the premises should be well lit and the waste containers must be easy to empty.”

Essity’s Jenny Turner agrees the choice of fixtures and fittings is pivotal. “All dispensers and surfaces should be easy to access, clean and refill in order to provide efficiency and ergonomic benefits for cleaning staff,” she said. “Operatives should also receive training on how to use the equipment and how to approach the workflow of each area to be cleaned. And the use of high-quality products will make a significant difference.”

Efficiency boost

Using different toilet paper systems across a facility creates inefficiencies and generates extra work, says hygiene systems specialist Essity. The company has launched Tork OptiServe, which allows managers to use the same toilet tissue refills across an entire facility.

Business enters the space race

Mega-rich entrepreneurs are seizing lucrative opportunities to boldly go where only government agencies with hefty budgets have gone before … and beyond. Hartley Milner explores the burgeoning commercial space industry, its trailblazers, triumphs and troughs.

AS DAWN BREAKS over California’s Mojave airport, White Knight, a jet-powered carrier plane, takes to the skies with a curious, cigar-shaped ‘parasite’ aircraft clamped to its belly. Whoops and cheers go up from among the thousands of aeronautics enthusiasts who have turned out to watch an historic moment unfold.

Excitement mounts as White Knight spirals ever higher before vanishing into the blue, its progress betrayed only by a wispy vapour trail. At an altitude of 14 kilometres (47,000 ft), the mothership releases its payload, SpaceShipOne … and the mission is on.

After gliding for a few tense seconds, SpaceShipOne fires up its twin hybrid

rockets, thrusting it at a speed of 3,581 kph (2,225 mph) to 100.12 km (62.21 miles) above the Earth’s surface. Pilot Mike Melvill reaches into his pocket and takes out some M&Ms and releases them in the cockpit. “They just spun around like little sparkling things in front of my eyes,” he said later. “I was so blown away, I got another handful and threw them out as well.”

SpaceShipOne had crossed the Kármán line, the internationally accepted point of entry to space. The suborbital test flight on June 21 2004, and two others later in the year, won the rocket craft’s developers, Scaled Composites, the $10 million (€9.20 million) Ansari X Prize for the first repeated crewed flights in a nongovernment, reusable spaceship.

The breakthrough marked a major turning point in commercial space exploration by opening up the industry to new entrants who brought with them new ideas and expertise from other industries, such as aerospace engineering,

manufacturing and software development.

The sector received a further boost from national space agencies pulling back from funding their programmes wholly with taxpayers’ money in favour of striking public-private partnerships within a competitive space economy.

Competition has forced down costs dramatically in recent times, by as much as 95 per cent for some satellite launches to low-Earth orbit. But space programmes have a habit of consuming budgets with the voracity of a black hole, so investors will need deep pockets for a good deal longer.

Deep pockets And pockets come no deeper than Elon Musk’s. His company, SpaceX, dominates space at the moment, launching 138 orbital missions from its Starbase site in Texas last year … more than half the global total. It also remains the only private company to have successfully launched, Continued page 40

Business: space travel Business enters the space race (continued) orbited and recovered a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, and taken astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Last September, SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission included the first ever spacewalk by a private individual. Billionaire adventurer Jared Isaacman is believed to have forked out $200 million (€184.70 million) for all four seats on Polaris.

But Musk has even loftier ambitions … settling humans on the moon and Mars. Musk is pinning his hopes on a fully reusable, super heavy-lift variant of his megarocket, Starship, the biggest and most powerful space craft ever built.

Musk posted that his first missions to the red planet – 225 million kilometres (140 million miles) from Earth – would take place from 2026. “These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars,” he said. “If those landings go well, then the first crewed flights will be in four years. Flight rates will grow exponentially, with the goal being a selfsustaining city on Mars in about 20 years.”

Moon landing Meantime, SpaceX is contracted by NASA to prepare a lander modelled on Starship for the first crewed moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. The two astronauts will become the first female and first person of colour to set foot on the lunar surface. They will spend almost a week exploring the moon’s south pole region and performing a variety of scientific experiments, including sampling water-ice. The mission is scheduled for mid-2027.

However, Starship launch timelines were put in jeopardy earlier this year when two uncrewed missions ended in explosive failures due to fires breaking out in the engine compartment. The back-to-back setbacks occurred during early mission phases that SpaceX had easily completed previously. Starship vehicles have been launched eight times to date, but the most recent incidents brought the overall success rate down to 50 per cent.

Musk’s closest rival in space is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, whose Blue Origin company blasted its first rocket, New Glenn, into orbit in January. The flight, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, was a success, but the rocket failed to land on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean and was lost. When the malfunction is sorted, New Glenn will offer a more powerful alternative to SpaceX’s reusable workhorse craft, Falcon 9. Bezos wants to use it for his Project Kuiper programme to deploy 3,000 low-Earth satellites to provide broadband services.

Blue Origin was last year awarded a $3.40 billion (€3.13 billion) contract to

build a lander to take two astronauts to the moon’s surface from NASA’s Lunar Gateway moon-orbiting space station, which is currently under construction.

Gateway will help the agency and its partners research and develop what is required for a sustained human presence in deep space, as well as chart a path for the first human missions to Mars.

Flying the flag for Britain, but not looking to plant it on a celestial body just yet, business magnate Sir Richard Branson is focusing instead on offering ‘low-cost’ space tourism. Since its first successful commercial flight in June 2023, his California-based Virgin Galactic company has completed a dozen more trips and plans to have its six-person, third generation Delta class spaceship ready to launch next year. Tickets for a truly outof-this-world experience will be a snip at around $600,000 (€552,000) per seat. But hurry, space geeks … Virgin is understood to have taken 700 bookings already.

This February, Californian startup AstroForge launched its Odin spacecraft to a small asteroid named 2022 OB5 in the first private mission of its kind. The quest was to collect data about the space rock towards eventually mining minerals in space to replenish Earth’s rapidly depleting critical resources. But mission control had difficulty sustaining communications with the probe, leaving it to tumble aimlessly through space. AstroForge is planning to launch a more ambitious attempt to land on the asteroid within the next few years.

European agency Not to be eclipsed, the European Space Agency (ESA) has also made the commercialisation of space a strategic priority. The Germany-based agency sees involving the private sector as critical to its ambitions for a green and digital Europe, and to boost the continent’s profile in a global space economy projected to be worth €1.80 trillion by 2035.

In March, ESA’s new heavy-lift rocket, Ariane 6 – built by a consortium of European companies – carried out its first commercial mission, deploying a French military reconnaissance satellite into orbit.

This means Europe can now independently launch satellites for the first time since Russia pulled its heavy Soyuz rockets after invading Ukraine.

Also this year, the agency’s Space Rider reusable robotic laboratory is due to make

its maiden flight, with the aim of providing commercial customers with “affordable and independent” access to space for the benefit of humankind. The uncrewed lab will spend two months carrying out experiments using microgravity to advance research in areas such as pharmaceutics, biomedicine, biology and physical science.

Earthly benefits No vertical orbital rocket has ever blasted off from western Europe, with all launches being from overseas sites.

However, a handful of companies are hoping to change that with help from ESA, which funds rocket launch companies through its Boost! programme. In 2024, it awarded €44.22 million to Isar Aerospace, Orbex, RFA and HyImpulse in the hope that one or more of them will soon begin regular flight missions from two potential sites: Andøya in Norway and the Shetland Islands north of the UK. Space exploration has produced a plethora of down-to-Earth benefits, from solar panels, implantable heart monitors and cancer therapies to lightweight materials, water-purification technologies, improved computing systems and global search-and-rescue systems. Some of the latest spinoffs from NASA projects include: • Facilities on the International Space Station for commercial companies to perform science, including culturing higher-quality human heart tissue and knee cartilage and pharmaceutical crystals that can be grown on Earth to provide new medical treatments • Antigravity treadmills to help people with mobility conditions to walk or run, first developed to maintain the fitness of astronauts in weightless environments • Nutritional supplements originally formulated to keep space crews fit and mitigate the health hazards of long stays in space • Technology for the 3D printing of buildings on the moon now being used by its developers to print large structures here on Earth. More bizarrely, another group of researchers has plans to build homes on Earth from a concept it developed to grow lunar buildings from fungus.

Said Dan Lockney, technology transfer executive at NASA: “I’ve learned it’s almost impossible to predict where space technology will find an application in the commercial market.”

Chemical dispensing

The pros and cons THERE IS A GROWING tendency for firms to use chemical dosing systems when carrying out cleaning procedures rather than having to dilute their products by hand.

The traditional “glug glug” method of mixing is now generally regarded as being old-fashioned, inaccurate and potentially unsafe. But what boxes do chemical dispensing systems actually tick? And as businesses strive to be more sustainable, efficient and cost-effective, how far do dosing systems help them to fulfil these ambitions?

Accurate dosing is a constant challenge and a time-consuming aspect of cleaning, says Kärcher’s accessories and detergents product manager Ilona Klein. “A dispensing system improves time efficiency while also preventing uneconomic overdosing,” she said. “Not only do they offer advantages from an economic and ecological viewpoint, they also ensure a consistent result without negative effects such as a sticky floor caused by overdosing.”

The wrong dosage will result in wasted cleaning agent while also potentially damaging surfaces, she said. “A dosing system will provide the right dilution ratio, reducing waste and preventing unnecessary expense,” said Klein. “It will also ensure that the correct dosage is used, even when applied by untrained personnel in a high staff-turnover situation. And users will benefit from the safe and ergonomic handling of the products.”

Concentrated chemicals used in professional cleaning can often be highly alkaline or acidic, she said. “If the recommended safety equipment such as gloves and goggles is worn incorrectly, substances in these products could trigger reactions if they should come into contact with the user’s skin or eyes,” she said. “Consequently, any contact with concentrated cleaning agents should ideally be reduced as far as possible. So a dosing system can make a valuable contribution to the cleaner’s occupational safety.”

When dosing systems in Kärcher’s scrubber dryers are combined with the

company’s Eco!flow system they provide a uniform cleaning result, says Kärcher’s scrubber dryer application expert Patrick Prasser. “This significantly reduces the consumption of water and cleaning agent because the quantity is adjusted every time the operator slows down for bends and obstacles,” he said.

Dosing systems in the future are likely to require even less direct contact with the detergent concentrate, Prasser predicts.

“They may also include individualised connection systems and digital networking options,” he adds. “The inclusion of digital features might thereby provide additional support in terms of centralised data availability and resource planning.

“In fact, we have already implemented an app connection into our B 50 W scrubber dryer that makes managing authorisations and setting up dilution levels even more intuitive.”

Health and safety benefit Automatic dosing prevents the glugging and spillages often associated with manual dispensing, says Fenton Packaging Solutions’ supply chain managing partner David Wilson. “The fact that the product is usually housed in a secure container means there is an immediate health and safety benefit,” he said.

“Chemical dispensing equipment also provides an accurate dosage each time provided the equipment is calibrated regularly and the system is maintained.

And this delivers cost control benefits and takes out all the guesswork.”

Dosing systems allow chemical manufacturers to supply their product in concentrated form, he says. “This in turn means they can specify a more sustainable pack size by supplying a 10-litre bagin-box concentrated pack, for example, rather than a 20-litre or 25-litre rigid plastic pack that contains a chemical and water mix,” he said.

“Smaller packs allow for easier storage while the reduced weight involved improves moving and handling. And another advantage is that a bag-in-box pack can

be safely connected to the dosing system hardware using snap-on connectors which minimises the risk of spillage.”

Such systems can be set to produce clean product at the point of installation – which is the ultimate goal, he adds. “While minor tweaks may be needed, a subsequent call by the installer every four to six weeks to check the dosage is all that will be required,” he said. “With conventional pouring there is no consumption control, and this can lead to rising costs.”

Dispensing systems are safer than manual dosing because they prevent any contact between the chemicals and the user, according to Wilson. They also allow businesses to easily gather usage data, he says. “Another advantage is that a controlled system eliminates the risk of theft, whereas traditional jerrycans and 750 ml trigger bottles can easily go missing,” he adds. “Dispensing systems have also moved on enormously which means that all information is now at the users’ fingertips and they can quickly identify and rectify any areas of concern.”

As sustainability moves further up companies’ agendas there are an increasing number of environmentally-friendly solutions entering the market, he says.

“For example, the box used in our Cheertainer bag-in-box can be separated from the liner after use and the box can then be recycled, while the liner can be used in the waste-to-energy arena,” he said.

Chemical dispensing systems ease the cleaning burden and make the whole process more efficient, according to Greenspeed marketing executive Rosaliene Verhoef. “They measure out the exact amount of chemical required on the spot, making manual mixing a thing of the past,” she said. “This guarantees consistent cleaning results without the hassle.

“Dispensing systems also keep a tight grip on how much chemical is being used, which prevents overdosing and avoids situations such as method errors, residue build-ups and unnecessary costs. And by using concentrated chemicals, companies can minimise their waste and lower their carbon footprint.”

She says dispensing systems that prevent any contact between the customer and the chemicals are safer than manual dosing methods. “Such systems reduce the risks of accidents or mishandling and underscore the company’s commitment to ensuring a safe workplace environment,” she said.

“Accurate dosing also ensures an ef-

fective clean and prevents issues such as sticky surfaces. Dosing systems further enhance efficiency by delivering high-performance cleaning specifically formulated for different water hardness levels. And they enable companies to collect valuable data on chemical usage, providing the insights they need to fine-tune their processes and make informed decisions.”

Reduce exposure Greenspeed’s Bag-in-Box systems are designed to significantly reduce cleaners’ direct exposure to potentially hazardous substances and provide a safe and user-friendly experience. The company also offers Probio Tabs which are probiotic effervescent tablets to be added to water.

Chemical dispensing systems can speed up operations, cut costs and produce safer results, says Brightwell’s product manager Tom Ford. “Safety is paramount so a closed system will minimise exposure to harmful chemicals both for employees and for end-users,” he said.

“Chemicals are formulated to clean surfaces at a specified dilution rate which means both under-dosing and over-dosing can have negative consequences. Using

too much chemical is wasteful and will increase operational costs, while also leaving behind residues that are difficult to rinse off. However, failing to use sufficient chemical concentrate will compromise cleanliness and could lead to customer dissatisfaction. So precise dosing will save resources and promote environmental responsibility.”

Dosing systems that prevent any enduser contact with the chemicals typically offer safety advantages over manual dosing methods, he says. “However, thoughtfully-designed manual dosing solutions can still be a safe option when they enable precise dosage at specific ratios or provide secure containers for chemicals,” he said.

Besides enhancing cleaning and hygiene efficiency, dosing systems also offer sustainability benefits, says Ford. “Using highly concentrated chemicals at proper doses ensures efficient cleaning while also reducing shipping requirements, packaging and waste,” he said. “Other important advantages include access to valuable data reporting such as chemical usage reports, since these help to ensure all cleaning processes are managed smoothly, efficiently and cost-effectively.”

Brightwell’s EcoSprayer and EcoFoamer systems are designed for heavy-duty cleaning and for disinfecting large areas.

These systems automatically dilute and dispense a controlled dosage of product without the user coming into contact with the chemical during the dilution process.

According to Ford, customers are increasingly demanding connectivity in their products. “They are seeking the ability to remotely access pumping systems in order to enable real time reporting,” he said. “The technology we’re developing will ultimately span the range of products we produce and this will enable greater efficiency and effectiveness in our customers’ businesses and also benefit their own carbon footprint.”

So, are there any arguments against using a dosing system? “It has to be fit for purpose,” says Fenton Packaging’s David Wilson. “Dispensing systems come at a cost which means the supplier has to recoup that cost. So it is important to ensure the usage matches the investment.”

Brightwell’s Tom Ford believes manual dosing can be more appropriate than chemical dispensing in certain situations.

“Manual dosing allows for a hands-on

approach, particularly in scenarios where it is important to allow on-site manual management and where cost considerations are paramount,” he says.

Kärcher’s Patrick Prasser says the installation costs of dosing solutions can be off-putting for some. “However, that is offset by the savings made from avoiding overdosing along with the increased safety

of employees.”

In some environments the cleaning solution needs to be prepared on site, he adds. “If a two-bucket method is employed in a larger location such as an airport and the cleaning agent runs out, the nearest supply room might not be around the corner,” he said. “And in some cases a permanent installation is impractical. So in these situations we might recommend the use of a dosing head that is screwed directly on to the bottle, or a machine with a built-in dosing system.”

Greenspeed’s Rosaliene Verhoef agrees that the initial investment can be an argument against installing a dispensing system. “There is also a need for proper training so staff are equipped with the know-how to effectively use them,” she says. “Technical maintenance is another factor since regular upkeep of dosing systems is essential for optimal performance.

“However, we feel that the long-term advantages and efficiency benefits outweigh these concerns and the convenience, safety and sustainability of dosing systems often prove to be much more significant in the grand scheme of things.”

A GREATER DEMAND for ergonomic cleaning equipment designed to reduce the physical strain on the part of the cleaner is being predicted for this year.

According to the Interclean Top 10 Trends for 2025 report - compiled in conjunction with ECJ - we will also be experiencing higher demand for non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning solutions. And these are likely to use less energy while also achieving a higher performance.

The Interclean Top Trends report claims the cleaning and hygiene industry is undergoing a transformation which will provide a whole host of new opportunities. And this means key players will need to embrace the changes and adapt their equipment and working practices. How will this apply to floor polishing?

Ergonomics and user-comfort are becoming increasingly important to customers according to Kärcher’s floor care product management director Christian Mrowka. “Professionals often spend hours at a time operating floor polishing machines,” he said. “Minimising the strain on the part of the operator can result in reduced fatigue, fewer injuries and improved productivity. And the use of efficient machinery along with the correct choice of accessories and detergents allows customers to save time and reduce the physical impact.”

A move towards the use of non-toxic, user-friendly cleaning solutions is another significant trend the company has observed, adds Mrowka. “There is a growing awareness of the potential health and environmental impact of cleaning systems.

Customers are increasingly seeking solutions that are not only effective but are also safe for users and the environment.”

New stripping agents, pads, floor machines and floor finishes are frequently being launched to improve productivity, Mrowka says. “These are also being developed to enhance performance, ergonomics and comfort. Customers will ensure great results by selecting the correct polishing method including the right machines, accessories and chemicals.”

Large, heavy items of machinery do not necessarily provide the best possible cleaning outcomes, he said. “Good results can be achieved using light and ergonomic machines combined with accessories and chemicals designed to deliver results in less time and with more comfort.”

Kärcher has experienced a marked increase in demand for products and systems that offer environmental benefits.

“Customers are seeking ways of reducing their environmental footprint, conserving resources and promoting a healthier workplace,” Mrowka said. “And this plays a significant role in floor polishing.”

The standard methods of stripping resilient flooring such as PVC, laminate and LVT often involve the use of toxic chemicals, he adds. “The process of adding another coat of polish then has to be repeated several times per year on heavy-traffic areas due to wear,” he said.

“However there are polishing methods, such as daily cleaning with diamond pads, that keep resilient floorings in a good condition and avoid the necessity of stripping and recoating.”

Maintaining a floor is more sustainable than installing all-new flooring, he says.

“Resurfacing resilient floors considerably reduces cost, energy consumption and carbon footprint compared with a new installation,” he said.

Ergonomics, usability and sustainability have been the main cleaning industry trends in recent years according to Fil-

mop’s Italy area manager Jimmy Vardanega. “Ergonomics is always a major focus, both in floor polishing and in cleaning in general,” he said. “The most successful companies are those that employ ergonomic equipment with the aim of reducing work-related diseases and illnesses as far as possible. This has the knock-on effect of minimising costs, which in turn makes them sustainable.”

He recognises a switch to user-friendly cleaning solutions is becoming another key trend. “These help to facilitate training and greatly reduce the chance of making mistakes,” he said. “Equipment that is more complex and less intuitive to use can have a negative impact on productivity.”

Sustainability also has a heavy influence on customer choice today, he says. “The demand for environmentally-sustainable solutions touches all areas of professional cleaning which is increasingly focused on environmental protection,” he said.

Less physical strain Filmop’s Unilav Side Grip wax spreader is claimed to ease the task for the operator because it eliminates the need for lifting heavy buckets or continually raising and lowering the tool to dip it into the wax and then place it back on the ground.

Features include a side dispensing knob that allows the operator to adjust the wax release, plus a mop holder with hooks said to ensure maximum adhesion to the mop.

Cleanology has also seen a growing demand for equipment that reduces physical strain on the operator says marketing director Kate Lovell. “Floor polishing machines are increasingly being designed with improved manoeuvrability and are incorporating features such as adjustable handles and lightweight materials.

Meanwhile, the integration of automation in floor is allowing for hands-free operation of polishing equipment. And advanced sensors and AI-driven systems reduce the need for manual intervention.”

She says there has also been a notable shift towards the use of non-toxic, userfriendly solutions. “These prioritise the

user’s health and safety while also being less harmful to the environment,” she said.

Many businesses are transitioning towards products and systems that offer sustainability benefits, according to Lovell.

“This has contributed to a significant shift in the cleaning industry as a whole towards safer, more environmentally-conscious products and systems,” she said.

Cleanology uses lightweight floor polishing machinery designed to reduce the strain on the operator and provide access to hard-to-reach areas. The fact that the equipment is battery powered also removes the need for hazardous cables.

Like other commentators, Bona has also noted a demand for more ergonomic floor polishing equipment according to brand marketing manager Patrik Jacobsson. “This applies not only to the equipment itself we have also witnessed facilities seeking new systems that reduce labour along with the costs related to floor polishing,” he said. “In fact the newer, more innovative floor treatments can eliminate the need to polish altogether.”

The demand for less toxic, user-friendly cleaning solutions has been growing globally, he says. And there has been a general

trend towards floor polishing products and systems that offer sustainability benefits.

“Some European associations are establishing new objectives to institute practices that are more sustainable across the board,” he said. “For example one in the Netherlands, which gathers data from most cleaning companies in the country, recently agreed on a target to halt the polishing and stripping of linoleum floors

by January 2027.”

No chemicals He says the recommended sustainable alternative floor maintenance system is based on the use of permanent PU coatings. “The envisioned transition is regarded as a more sustainable floor maintenance method and includes sustainability benefits over a 10-year period,” said Jacobsson.

He claims these benefits include water savings of around 30 per cent; energy savings of 54 per cent; a 41 per cent reduction in CO2 and the removal of the need for chemical strippers.

“In addition, cleaning companies and specialised floor maintenance companies can reduce the amount of waste water associated with the stripping process which

ends up in sewage systems,” he said.

The company’s Bona Resilient solution is a system of PU coatings and sanding machines that remove old polish via a chemical-free stripping agent. The PU coating applied afterwards boasts lasting protection and removes the need for a yearly polish and strip. The surface can then be sanded down and recoated every five years or so.

So what are the key floor polishing trends for 2025? Cleanology’s Kate Lovell has remarked a particular increase in demand for chemical-free cleaning. “This is safer both for the cleaner and for anyone else using the space,” she said.

Bona’s Patrik Jacobsson claims the use of permanent coatings is increasingly replacing the more established floor maintenance routines based on polish and stripping cycles. “Cleaning companies are becoming increasingly concerned about factors such as labour shortages, cost and the need for sustainability,” he said. “And floor owners are seeking better processes and are gravitating toward refinishing hardwood floors rather than replacing them in a bid to save money and reduce their environmental impact.”

Planet-conscious design More than half the world’s biggest and most powerful companies have set a target to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to net zero. To achieve that, businesses must address their entire environmental footprint.

Products and hygiene tools designed with those goals in mind can reduce a cleaning or FM company’s overall climate impact. Designing sustainable products must involve integrating environmental considerations into every stage of the product’s life cycle. Kristin Barrett, circularity programme manager at KimberlyClark Professional, tells us more.

ENHANCED REGULATION, increasingly aware consumers and investors, and a greater urgency to address the climate crisis is driving corporate strategy and action on sustainability issues. Today, more than half of the world’s biggest and most powerful companies have set a target to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to net zero (1). In the UK, the majority of the largest and most prominent companies have done the same (2).

To achieve this, companies will need to address their entire environmental footprint. This will include direct emissions from their offices, plants and facilities (Scope 1), the indirect emissions coming from the generation of the energy they buy (Scope 2), and all other indirect emissions that occur in their value chain (Scope 3). It is the Scope 3 emissions that are the most challenging to manage because they encompass the entire supply chain - from raw material extraction to product disposal - and include all of the elements outside of their direct control. And Scope 3 emissions normally account for more than 70 per cent of a firm’s carbon footprint (3).

So, managing these emissions effectively is crucial for any organisation that is aiming to achieve net zero goals.

For cleaning and facilities management companies, helping businesses, schools, stadiums, shopping centres, hospitals and healthcare centres reach sustainability goals within budget is an ongoing challenge. Maintaining a strong standard of cleanliness and hygiene, while reducing costs and ensuring high satisfaction levels is a fine balancing act. Facilities managers and their cleaning teams need products and solutions that are developed to support sustainability, while also ensuring costs are kept under control and hygiene standards remain high.

Products and hygiene tools such as hand towel and soap dispensers designed with their carbon and environmental footprint in mind can significantly reduce a business’ overall climate impact. Likewise, devices and machinery that require less

energy to produce, use, and dispose of can help lower overall carbon emissions.

For example, energy-efficient appliances, low-emission vehicles, and sustainably manufactured goods will all contribute to reducing GHGs.

Design considerations Designing sustainable products must involve integrating environmental considerations into every stage of the product life cycle. This lifecycle thinking means considering the environmental impacts of a product from cradle to grave - from raw material extraction to production, distribution, use, and disposal. Such a holistic approach helps identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts at each stage of a product’s development.

A key part of this is selecting materials that will help to reduce the overall footprint, a process that demands intensive planning and consideration. A life cycle assessment (LCA) – to determine whether it is best to use glass or aluminium, for example is often necessary to establish the benefits of favouring one material over another. Using recycled or renewable materials plus avoiding hazardous substances are also important considerations in this process.

Designing products that consume less energy during their use phase can significantly reduce carbon emissions. Energyefficient products are not only better for the environment but also offer cost savings for customers or end users. The KCP ICON dispenser, for example, uses direct drive technology, providing 150,000 dispenses per battery, 99.9 per cent jam free reliability and a machine that is 85 per cent quieter than the leading competition (4). Patented dual sensors provide responsive dispensing and the ability to vary the length of towel dispensed enables the facility to select the length which best meets their needs, controlling dispensing and reducing waste.

Developing products that last is also an increasingly important consideration. Creating solutions that are both durable and

can easily be repaired reduces the need for expensive and frequent replacements and minimises waste. Planning for the end-of-life phase of a product or consumable involves comprehensively designing for disassembly, recyclability, or biodegradability. This ensures products can be responsibly disposed of, again minimising the overall environmental impact.

It’s time to go circular Many companies across all business sectors have embraced circular economy principles, a key concept in sustainable product design (5). This involves creating circular systems, where products and materials are reused, recycled, or repurposed, minimising waste and resource consumption - and keeping materials in circulation for longer. Of course this helps preserve natural resources and reduces the burden associated with mining, logging and other extraction processes.

Circular systems are designed to eliminate waste by ensuring that materials from used products are continuously cycled through the economy. This can involve recycling materials into new items, refurbishing old products for resale, or repurposing waste materials for new uses.

These circular practices can significantly reduce GHGs by decreasing the energy required for the manufacturing of new products. And by reducing material costs, optimising resource use, and minimising waste disposal expenses, businesses can also improve their bottom line.

There are some great examples of companies setting standards in sustainable product design. The outdoor apparel business, Patagonia is renowned for its commitment to the planet. It designs durable products intended to last for years. It offers repair services to extend product life and encourages its customers to recycle products through its Worn Wear programme (6).

Similarly, the lighting and electronics company Philips has a clear focus on boosting energy efficiency, recyclability, and the use of sustainable materials - and has set ambitious targets to around all three as part of its design and manufacturing processes.

Kimberly-Clark Professional adheres to sustainable design principles throughout all its product research, design and development processes. For example, its controlled dispensing systems ensure that the right amount of product (hand towels, soap, sanitiser or toilet paper) is being dispensed, generating less waste. To be more respectful of natural resources, Kimberly-Clark Professional continues to look at new fibre sources so that it can

maintain the 93 per cent of recycled fibres contained in tissue products made at its European mills The company’s RightCycle Hand Towel Programme is a good example of how businesses can use circular recycling solutions. Hand towels are collected by specialised waste management partners and then used as input material for new paperbased products. It is a programme that is helping customers cut their waste by up to 25 per cent and increase their recycling rate by up to 5 per cent (7). The scheme can also help firms reduce their overall waste footprint. Rather than sending their old washroom dispensers to landfill at the end of their life, the previously hard-torecycle items are collected and sent to a recycling partner, with all the raw materials used to create new products.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious market, the products you use, and offer your customers are more important than ever. Carefully designed products play a crucial role in advancing corporate sustainability goals, particularly in the FM and cleaning sector, by reducing carbon

emissions, minimising waste, and increasing cost savings, while importantly maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards.

By embracing sustainable product design principles and circularity, businesses can enhance their environmental footprint particularly Scope 3 - while meeting the ever-changing and challenging demands of customers and stakeholders.
