Canada is a preferred destination for International students, was the cap on international students the only way to address the housing crisis? Are the students to blame here or are they the victims of the ongoing housing shortage?

International students make immense contributions to Canada. They are not responsible for the housing shortage, and the cap was not a housing announcement. The growth of Temporary Residents adds to demand for housing and other services people must be able to access, including international students. It is not right that they are promised the Canadian Dream by academic institutions (some more legitimate than others), then never see these promises come to fruition. You don’t have to look far to see these students being taken advantage of, examples of 12 people sharing a basement have rightfully made headlines.

We expect institutions to accept the number of students that they can support, and provide housing options. As there are now more than 1 million study permit holders in Canada, the number of students has become unsustainable. This temporary cap is necessary to stabilize growth and protect the integrity of the International Student Program while additional reforms take effect.

According to an in-depth investigation by the CBC, few private colleges operate only to profit off international students and then leave them feeling duped. How can more transparency be brought about to spread the stop of misinformation?

As education is in provincial jurisdiction, the provinces must step up. Provinces determine their Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). Fly-by-night schools, or puppy mill schools should not be in operation, so we hope that provinces will take action. We have also provided a finite number study permits, which should be allocated accordingly.

Some provinces also allow public colleges to license their curriculum to a private college, with students physically attending the private college but graduating with a diploma from the public college. As oversight of private colleges is inconsistent among provinces, the eligibility criteria for the Postgraduation work permit (PGWP) excludes private college graduates. By clarifying that graduates of these programs are not eligible for a PGWP, we are confirming the policy that graduates who attend a private college aren’t eligible.

Don't you feel this is a punitive measure for students who are bright and want to come to Canada for quality education?

We value the  contributions international students bring to Canada. To set these students up for success, we must tackle issues that have made some students vulnerable and have challenged program integrity. This includes making sure we can support international students coming to Canada, while deterring bad actors.

International students who have been here for sometime are still feeling challenged when it comes to finding jobs, housing, and face discrimination etc. What mechanisms can the

increases demand for housing, infrastructure and services, it also contributes significantly to the supply of labour, that we need to build new homes and support the health care sector.

Temporary and permanent economic immigration pathways play a complementary role in helping address Canada’s labour market shortages in the construction sector. From 2016 to 2023, IRCC has admitted over 44,000 permanent residents with work experience in trades occupations, through its various programs.

While population growth through immigration increases demand for housing, infrastructure and services, it also contributes significantly to the supply of labour, that we need to build new homes and support the health care sector. 6

immigration system implement to help them make their transition smoother?

To  set international students up for success, we must tackle issues that have made them vulnerable, challenging the integrity of the program. This includes making sure we can support international students coming to Canada. The cap aims to deliver stabilize the number of international students while it is in place.

Provinces and territories determine which institutions can host international students, and until recently, DLIs accepted as many international students as they wanted. With these new measures, provinces and territories will control how permits are allocated. We expect these institutions to only accept the number of students that they can reasonably support.

We are working with key stakeholders to advance a trusted institutions model. This will reward good actors, who have a plan in place to support housing for students.

The Career Colleges Association fears that the cap is going to lead to labour shortagesfor instance people who are training people in construction trades who would go on to build new homes. How concerning is that for you?

Graduates of master's and other "short graduate-level programs" will "soon" be able to apply for a three-year work permit. What is the timeline on that?

As of February 15, 2024, graduates of master’s degree programs that are less than two years in duration are now eligible to apply for a three-year PGWP.

Talking about the integrity and fairness of the immigration system, inviting people to come to Canada who may then not be able to find an affordable place to live-what kind of a message does that send about Canada?

We are reviewing the program to better support international students in Canada. IRCC is currently looking at an options and continue to work closely with provinces and territories and educational institutions to address these ongoing challenges.

In December we announced that the costof-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will be raised so that international students are financially prepared for Canada. This threshold will be adjusted yearly when Statistics Canada updates the low-income cut-off (LICO). For 2024, a single applicant needs to show they have $20,635, representing 75% of LICO, in addition to their first year of tuition and travel expenses. A student  without adequate funds is more vulnerable to being exploited by an employer or forced to accept a poor housing situation.

We continue to work with provinces and territories, DLIs and national education stakeholders on a path forward.

The cap will be in place for two years; the number of permits to be issued in 2025 will be reassessed at the end of this year-so what happens after that?

We’ll be monitoring this program closely, and adapting accordingly.

Even though post-secondary education is a provincial responsibility in Canada will the Feds and the provinces be working together to sort out this situation?

Absolutely. We will continue to work closely with provinces and territories, DLIs and national education stakeholders on a path forward.

What's a message you would like to share with the South Asian community

The South Asian Community has shaped Canada and enriched our  future. Whether it’s those who have been here for generations or have recently chosen to call Canada home, the wonderful contributions of this community are clear!  5

THE FIRST SOUTH ASIAN WOMAN TO VISIT EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD MELISSA

ROY

Embarking on a journey to visit every country in the world is a dream for many, but for Melissa Roy, it became a reality.

DARPAN SPOTLIGHT

As the first South Asian woman to accomplish this feat by visiting all 193 countries by the age of 34, Roy's story is one of determination, passion, and a deep-rooted desire to explore the unknown.

Growing up in a small Midwestern town, Roy's childhood was marked by challenges, including domestic turmoil and financial constraints. Despite these obstacles, she harboured an insatiable curiosity about the world beyond her immediate surroundings. This curiosity laid the foundation for her future adventures.

Roy's love for travel was ignited during her college years when she studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Subsequent experiences, such as participating in Semester at Sea and working various jobs to finance her travels, only fueled her wanderlust further.

By the time Roy reached her late twenties, she had already visited 66 countries. Inspired by her own journey and driven by a desire to inspire others, she set a bold goal: to visit 100 countries and all seven continents before her 30th birthday. With unwavering determina tion, she achieved this milestone, celebrating her thirtieth birthday in Antarctica, surrounded by majestic icebergs and curious penguins.

Roy's preferred mode of travel was always unconventional yet enriching - she opted to stay with local hosts through platforms like Couchsurfing, immersing herself in the culture and traditions of each destination. This choice allowed her to forge meaningful connections with locals, offering insights and experiences that go beyond typical tourist attractions.

Financing her travels entirely from her own pocket, Roy took on various jobs, in cluding acting gigs and investments, to fund her adventures. Her commitment to self-sufficiency sets her apart in an age dominated by sponsored influencers and branded content.

In December 2019, Roy achieved her ultimate goal by visiting her 193rd country. For Roy, Bangladesh held special significance as the birthplace of her late father and grandparents, completing a symbolic journey back to her roots.

Looking ahead, Roy's aspirations extend beyond her travel as she aims to leverage her experiences to inspire others. She shares, “I hope to pass the torch onto my beloved son, Royson and someday, his children, so they too realize that the best education is found not in textbooks, but outside the four walls of the classroom. Travel is the best investment you can make in yourself.”

In Melissa Roy's remarkable journey, we find not only a testament to the power of de termination and resilience but also an inspiring narrative of breaking barriers, embracing diver sity, and discovering the beauty of our shared humanity.

verse background and a passion for storytelling, Wraich has carved out a niche for herself in both traditional television and digital media.

Wraich's breakout roles include starring in acclaimed web series such

as Guidestones and The 410. Notably, her recent starring role playing a Sikh Punjabi rookie police officer in the CBC original series titled Allegiance (available to watch on the free CBC Gem streaming platform) marks a groundbreaking

moment in North American television, as it is the first time a police procedural has centred on a character of this background. Wraich's performance has been garnering praise for its depth, earning her recognition across the nation.

In regard to the theme of Allegiance, Wraich shares that the show confronts the stark reality that our justice system is flawed and fully embraces that truth.

Wraich notes, "What's legal isn't necessarily always what's fair." However, the tone of the show is imbued with hope, advocating for a police force that embodies positive change. As such, the storytelling challenges conventions with a light touch, inviting introspection without overwhelming the audience.

Beyond her on-screen work, Wraich has also made significant contributions behind the scenes, having written and directed short films like Chinesey and Ruby's Tuesday, "It's nice stepping into a story penned by someone else, but I also love creating and writing.", shares Wraich. Reflecting on her journey, Wraich candidly shares the challenges she has faced as a woman of colour in the industry. From navigating auditions to confronting stereotypes, she has remained steadfast in her commitment to true representation, even amidst setbacks. She details, "When things don't go my way, I sincerely believe it wasn't meant for me, and something else is. There is faith."

As she continues to make strides in her career, Wraich remains grounded in her roots and committed to uplifting others. She recognizes the importance of using her platform to inspire the next generation of storytellers and to challenge the status quo. Through her work and her words, Wraich is not only reshaping the landscape of North American television but also paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse entertainment industry.

Wraich highlights, "With approximately 800,000 Sikhs in Canada, we stand as one of the fastest-growing communities, both in numbers and influence. There was a moment when I saw my face on the poster, but I knew I wasn't standing alone. It's a collective achievement, a testament to our unity and resilience. It's a moment that belongs to all of us, and it's a beautiful feeling to share in this triumph together."

Meet

FOUZIA YOUNIS

Women are making great strides in various professions, whether as CEOs of companies or government leaders.  A British Muslim woman whose career spans two decades in the foreign service has made history again. She made history when she was appointed Director of Communications at the British High Commission in Islamabad over three years ago — becoming the first Pakistani-origin diplomat to be appointed in this role.

Fouzia Younis has made history with her new United Kingdom Consul General role in Toronto. Younis was born in Birmingham, England, but has served as a diplomat in Sri Lanka,

Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and the Middle East, which exposed her to many different cultures.

Her office overlooks the busy Bay Street area of Toronto, and she feels at home with the city's huge South Asian diaspora, having recently visited Vancouver and Surrey. Here's an excerpt from the conversation we had with her when she visited the DARPAN Office: Tell me about your journey and what areas you are passionate about?

I am a career diplomat and have been in foreign office for 20 years. I have mostly served in South Asia. I spent four years in Sri Lanka; I was in Bangladesh for two years; I was in Pakistan for three and a half years, and I also worked in the

Middle East. It has been an absolutely fascinating career for me. When I joined the Foreign Office, most people from my background went into medicine, law, or engineering. For me, the foreign office has been a great place to work, serve, and represent my country. Whenever I go into a country, it's about the people. How can I make a difference in the lives of young people in New Delhi, Islamabad, or London who all have the same aspirations? They want good jobs, great healthcare, or raising their family, so how can I help them realize their aspirations through my position?

What is the role of a High Commission or Consulate General?

Which areas of the UK/Canada relation-

ship would you like to focus on?  In the UK government, we have got 4 Consulates. We have the High Commission based in Ottawa. I am based in Toronto. We also have Consulates in Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver. Our role is to represent the UK here in Canada. A large chunk of our work is dedicated to trade and investment. We want to boost the trade links between the UK and Canada as there is 47 million dollars worth of trade annually between the two nations. We are also working on climate change, media, and Artificial Intelligence. We are part of NATO, The Common Wealth, and G7, which is truly unique as that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.

It's a new year—2024—and much talk about diversity and inclusion exists. You are the first British Muslim Woman Consul General in Toronto. What's been your experience?

I was appointed in 2023, but in many ways, I feel this should have happened sooner than that. In the UK, we have Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is of Hindu religion; a Muslim mayor of London; and a Muslim First Minister of Scotland. So, the UK is changing as a society, and for me, being here in Canada is how I represent diversity. People have really welcomed me, and I am looking at doing the job differently. We have been celebrating Diwali. I have been watching Bollywood movies, celebrating Eid, and focusing on cricket.

With young women who view you as a role model and want to break barriers and shatter glass ceilings, what message would you like to share?

I don't consider myself a role model, and I have never really pitched myself as one. I am passionate about what I do, which is the first thing. My advice to any woman and woman of colour, no matter what background you come from, is to choose a profession and then really get behind it, really believe in what you do, and, most importantly, believe in yourself. I think that is a really good starting point.

Sachin, the driven force behind Sach in Motion, is a man with a mission fueled by compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to creating positive change. His journey began three years ago when he set his sights on breaking the world record for the fastest run across Canada, scheduled for 2025. Sachin's determination to make a difference transcended personal glory; it became a catalyst for a remarkable

feat of endurance and advocacy. In a bold gesture of solidarity, Sachin embarked on the monumental challenge of running 22 marathons in 22 days. This effort wasn't merely about physical prowess, but also a symbolic stride towards raising awareness for veterans, first responders, and emergency personnel grappling with mental health issues. The significance of the number 22, chosen to represent the heartbreaking statistic of

22 veterans who tragically take their lives each day, underscored the gravity of Sachin's mission. At the culmination of his 22-day journey, he stood before the BC Law Enforcement Memorial in Victoria. Here, amidst the solemnity of remembrance, he was met by Chief Del Manak and officers of the Victoria Police, as well as a retired serviceman whose heartfelt gratitude bore witness to the profound impact of Sachin's mission.

Endurance running demands not just physical stamina, but also an indomitable spirit. For Sachin, the fuel that sustains him through grueling ultra-marathons lies in his purpose. Latti elaborates, “I maintain my focus because I have a reason to. I don't only do this to improve myself as a person both mentally and physically, but to also raise awareness and funds advocating for those who silently bear the burdens of mental health struggles.”

Central to Sachin's vision is the creation of a community, a sanctuary where individuals affected by mental health issues, including PTSD, find solace and support. Through his initiatives, such as Sach in Motion and partnership with Honour House, Sachin endeavors to foster a collective spirit of healing and resilience.

His partnership with Hon our House exemplifies this commit ment, channeling donations towards providing crucial support for Ca nadian Armed Forces members, veterans, and first responders. Funds contribute to maintaining homes in New Westminster and Ashcroft, providing vital spaces for healing and retreat amid the challenges of mental health recovery.

That said, Sachin's impact extends beyond the pavement; he shares his journey through pod casting and public speaking engagements, spreading a message of hope and resilience. Traveling across Canada, he shares his inspiring narrative and future aspirations with schools and organizations. In Sachin's story, we find inspiration and a testament to the power of compassion, perseverance, and the unyielding belief in a brighter tomorrow.

B.C. Schools Take Action to Restrict Mobile Phone Access

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the integration of technology in education is both inevitable and contentious. Recently, British Columbia made headlines with the announcement of an upcoming province-wide restriction on cellphone use in public schools, sparking a debate that echoes the concerns and perspectives of various stakeholders – parents, students, and teachers alike.

From a parental standpoint, opinions are divided. While some acknowledge the disruptive potential of cell phones in classrooms, others stress the importance of equipping students with the skills to navigate an increasingly tech-centric world. "I agree that having cell phones in class can be disruptive, but we live in a world where technology is ever-growing. It's important that our kids are able to keep up with the vast changes that come from using technology every day," shares Jenny Bassi, parent of children in Grades 3, 10, and 12.

On the flip side, some students offer a more resolute stance against cellphone use in classrooms. Grade 7 student Gurniyam Ladhar details, "Using a phone in class can be distracting for yourself and other students. Also, cyberbullying may become easier as students may find it easier to post about someone on platforms like TikTok or Snapchat, possibly even without their permission." Rightfully so, concerns about privacy and consent are raised, highlighting the potential pitfalls of unrestricted digital access.

From the perspective of educators, the implementation of a cellphone ban necessitates a nuanced approach. While recognizing the need to minimize distractions, teachers emphasize the importance of holistic digital literacy education. "If we are okay with students using cell phones, we should first teach students how to use cell phones. In any case, students must learn, on a fundamental level, how to be safe, respectful, and responsible

The province wants to ensure students are focused on their learning with fewer distractions when in the classroom,"

The Ministry is engaging with school districts and K-12 education partners throughout B.C. to ensure all districts have policies in place by the start of next school year to restrict cellphone use by students and to determine what additional implementation considerations and supports may be needed by schools to further address student cell phone use at school.

The Ministry notes, "Many schools are already managing the use of cell phones in classrooms – like, for example, Belmont Secondary School in the Sooke School District that has very clear expectations with students that phones should be on silent or vibrate and stored in a student's locker or backpack during class. items that will be considered as school districts develop policies." By equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital landscape safely and responsibly, the province aims to foster a generation of digitally savvy learners.

As British Columbia navigates the complex terrain of technology in education, the cellphone debate serves as a microcosm of broader societal conversations surrounding digital citizenship, privacy, and well-being. By engaging with diverse perspectives and prioritizing collaborative solutions, stakeholders can work towards creating a balanced approach that harnesses the benefits of technology while mitigating its potential pitfalls. As the Province gears up for the start of the new school year in September 2024, one can't help but wonder: what will the landscape of cellphone use in classrooms look like? Only time will tell!

Generations of Womanhood: Perspectives Across Time

In the tapestry of humanity, women stand as pillars of strength, resilience, and wisdom across generations. A rich tapestry of experiences defines womanhood through the ages. In this special feature, we embark on a journey across generations, inviting three remarkable women – a daughter, a mother, and a grandmother – to share their perspectives on life. Through their voices, we aim to uncover the nuanced layers of the female experience, weaving together past, present, and future threads.

Question 1: What does it mean for you to be a woman? What, in your lifetime, has been the value or role of a woman in society?

Karnail Kaur (Grandmother): "Being a woman means you are a kind and caring person who holds many important roles in the family. A woman is a mother, a wife, and a daughter. She has many roles in the way her family lives and how to support her children to the best of her abilities."

Sandeep Kaur (Mother): "Women are kind and caring, yet strong and powerful. She faces challenges and has to work for her family, herself, and society. There are times when a woman puts others before herself. A woman is the backbone of the family. She is the

caregiver and portrays many roles of leadership. A woman has the role of a mother and a nurturer."

Amanat Kaur (Daughter): "Being a woman symbolizes your roles as a mother, a daughter, a wife, a nurturer, and an independent person. In our society, women aren't fully given the same appreciation as men. Women have to work twice as hard for any role in our lives, and we are questioned about it. I believe a woman is kind, caring, and loving. She is a teacher of morals and spreads goodness around the world."

Question 2: What are some challenges you face/ faced as a woman, and how do/did you navigate them?

Karnail Kaur (Grandmother): "Besides

DARPAN FEATURE

education, my husband's death caused me many challenges. I was to stay a widow because remarriage was not accepted in society. I couldn't take my rightful property. My own family had troubles, and I lost both my mother and father after my husband's death."

Sandeep Kaur (Mother): "There was discrimination between genders. After my father's death, I did not receive the land that belonged to him because I am a woman. Most parents did not spend money on their daughters' education and would save that money for their marriage. Also, women were not allowed to choose who they wanted to marry."

Amanat Kaur (Daughter):

"As a young woman, I have faced many challenges in my work. We are underestimated and questioned if we can do something. We have to fight for the little opportunity we have in sports. Women are constantly compared to men

in sports, even though a woman's body and a man's body are two completely different things. As a young woman, I always have to be careful about my whereabouts. Women often avoid wearing revealing clothes and turn to more simple clothes; we can't always feel confident in our clothing choices."

Question 3: What differences do you see regarding womanhood when you compare your experiences with your mom or daughter?

Karnail Kaur (Grandmother): "Women in this generation have more rights. They can receive a proper education. Women in this generation can get jobs in society. They are allowed to leave the house without any troubles."

Sandeep Kaur (Mother): "The women in this generation are more independent, and the attire has changed over the years, too. Women today don't

stay in one particular job for too long and are always willing to grab new opportunities. Women nowadays can study abroad while they were prohibited from doing so in the past."

Amanat Kaur (Daughter): "In my generation, we have the right to an education. We have more rights and freedom. In comparison to my mother's life, we have many more opportunities."

As we draw the curtains on this exploration of women across generations, one truth emerges: the indomitable spirit of womanhood knows no bounds. As we honour the past, embrace the present, and envision the future, let us stand in solidarity, united in our diversity, empowered by our shared experiences, and emboldened by the knowledge that together, we are unstoppable.

Empowering Skin of Color : Meet Dr. Mona Khurana of Shine MD

BUSINESS PROFILE

In the bustling city of Vancouver, amidst the sea of skincare options, there shines a beacon of hope for those seeking transformative care – Shine MD. At the helm of this revolutionary practice stands Dr. Mona Khurana, a woman whose journey from emergency medicine to Shine MD is as inspiring as it is impactful.

Shine MD is the culmination of Dr. Khurana's educational journey, which has been driven by her personal evolution as a woman, a mother, a physician, and a visionary. She is certified by the College of Family Physicians in both family medicine and emergency medicine and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Practical Dermatology with Distinction from Cardiff University.

Dr. Khurana's journey exemplifies resilience and adaptability, showcasing her remarkable ability to overcome challenges and evolve. After nearly a decade in emergency medicine, her career took an unexpected pause due to debilitating migraine headaches. Over the next two years, during her journey as a patient, she discovered the transformative power of treatments like Botox for migraine headaches. This prompted curiosity and interest in the growing field of aesthetic medicine. Simultaneously, her struggles with acne scarring led her to recognize a gap in the skincare industry – a lack of comprehensive care for skin conditions, particularly for individuals with skin of colour. "Through my own experiences, I realized the importance of addressing skin conditions early and comprehensively, especially for individuals with diverse skin tones.", Dr. Khurana reflects.

Thus, Shine MD was born from a vision to provide early access and

holistic care for common skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and melasma. Dr. Khurana's commitment to treating skin of colour is unparalleled, making Shine MD one of the first Canadian practices dedicated to addressing the unique needs of this demographic. Through advanced training, strategic partnerships, investment in cutting-edge technology, and services covered by MSP, Shine MD has emerged as a trailblazer in skin care, ensuring accessibility and excellence for all patients.

Yet, Shine MD is more than just a clinic; it's a community. Dr. Khurana's warm and welcoming approach fosters a sense of belonging among patients, transcending the typical clinical experience. "We strive to create a warm and welcoming environment where patients feel heard, valued, and supported.", she explains. "Our goal is not just to treat skin conditions but also to empower our patients to feel confident in their skin so they can pursue their life goals. We don't have a profit motive. When you work from a place of advocacy for patients and ensure the recommendation for the patient is honest and based in the best interests of the patient, that is integrity."

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Shine MD emerged in October 2020 as a premier clinic for acne and acne scarring care. Dr. Khurana's resilience and adaptability have deeply influenced the clinic's culture, emphasizing compassion, empathy, and patient-centric care. Additionally, she has been invited as a speaker for global companies such as Sciton and Galderma, sharing her insights on treating acne, acne scarring and skin of colour.

At Shine MD, a comprehensive

range of treatments, including aesthetic concerns, laser treatments, medical treatments, and specialized care for men and skin of colour, are all readily available to cater to diverse skincare needs. Dr. Khurana highlights, "As time progresses, we can become disconnected from our inner radiance when we see photos of ourselves or look in a mirror. For some of us, these changes have occurred slowly over time. For others, acne and scarring can significantly impact our lives and relationships. Shine MD is passionately committed to helping our patients connect with their confidence by providing them with treatments and skincare that assist them in becoming the most confident version of themselves."

Dr. Mona Khurana and Shine MD represent a beacon of inspiration in the skincare and aesthetics landscape. With her leadership and dedication, Dr. Khurana continues to inspire and uplift her patients and the skincare community. "As we continue on this journey, our mission remains clear – to provide compassionate, comprehensive care that not only empowers our patients but also facilitates healing on many levels.", Dr. Khurana concludes. "At Shine MD, we strive to maintain the highest standards of patient care and clinical excellence, thereby creating a safe space for your skin and soul."

ELEVATING INTERIOR DESIGN WITH TIMELESS SOPHISTICATION

Gill Lemley Design (GLD), a full-range interior design firm based in Vancouver, has been setting the standard for elevated project aesthetics since its establishment in the fall of 2021. With a combined experience of 10 years in the field, founders Shubneet Gill and Tessa Lemley have perfected the art of blending traditional and modern design styles to create spaces that evolve with their clients.

Shubneet Gill, co-founder, and principal designer highlights, "We specialize in luxury residential projects but also work with commercial and

multi-residential clients, ensuring our design expertise reaches far and wide." The idea of founding GLD sprouted from the duo's mutual passion for design and their desire to carve out a niche of their own. "We were working at a design firm, where our friendship blossomed, and were given the opportunity to take on projects independently. The two of us were ready for a change and felt like we were at a point in our lives where we could take on the challenge of owning our own business.", recalls Tessa Lemley, co-founder, and principal designer. Their partnership thrives on

the dynamic fusion of their individual design aesthetics. Tessa's affinity for traditional design styles and Shubneet's penchant for modern eclectic designs create a perfect balance that sets GLD apart in the industry. "Our philosophy emphasizes the significance of interior spaces as avenues for self-expression. Whether crafting retail or residential projects, we prioritize understanding how our environment influences mood, productivity, and lifestyle.", shares Gill.

Over the years, GLD has spearheaded numerous memorable projects, including the Kelowna project and the Balsam project. While their journey has been marked by success, Gill and Lemley have also encountered challenges, particularly in navigating male-dominated trades within the industry. However, through perseverance and professionalism, they have overcome these obstacles and earned respect within the field. In addition to their design expertise, Gill Lemley Design is deeply committed to community involvement and supporting local businesses, through initiatives such as advocating for products made in Canada and participating in design events. Client collaboration plays a pivotal role in their design process, ensuring that every project exceeds expectations. "We develop personal connections with all of our clients, striving to comprehend their daily routines to guarantee the creation of a functional home tailored to their family's needs.", explains Lemley. A Legacy of Love, Craftsmanship, and Community Connection

Established in 1985, HiClass Jewellers has evolved into more than just a purveyor of fine jewellery; it has become a cornerstone of tradition, connection, and enduring beauty. As the boutique approaches its 40th anniversary, the Nanda family's legacy of connecting loved ones through generations stands as a testament to Hi-Class Jeweller's unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and community.

A Legacy of Love and Tradition

"I become emotional when I reflect on the legacy of Hi-Class Jewellers. I like to think that our family's true business is the sacred task of immortalizing the

celebration of love," shares Seema Nanda. At the heart of Hi-Class Jewellers' legacy lies a deep understanding of the profound significance of human connection. From the moment a radiant bride steps through its doors to the joyous occasion of her daughter's visit years later, each encounter is imbued with the warmth of shared moments and cherished memories.  With a focus on sharing and celebrating beauty as a testament to the richness of human experience, Hi-Class Jewellers fosters an environment where every visit feels like a homecoming — a reunion of family and tradition. As the Nanda family has been buying and selling jewellery for about 40 years, their eye for beauty has become instinctual, and likewise, the ability to expertly guide clients towards what resonates most with them has been deeply ingrained.

Commitment to Craftsmanship

"Beauty isn't just reflected in a piece aesthetically; it also manifests itself in the quality of each piece's craftsmanship. Our goal has always been to invigorate our clients with beautiful jewellery that is expertly crafted, and we have managed to maintain that aspiration to this day. Our market presence, if I may speak from the heart, is not just about being in the midst of it all—it's about being in the heart of it," elaborates Nanda.

Central to Hi-Class Jewellers' ethos is its unwavering dedication to quality and authenticity. Every piece of jewellery undergoes meticulous scrutiny to ensure not only aesthetic appeal but also superior craftsmanship and durability. With decades-long relationships with skilled artisans and stringent quality control measures, the boutique maintains the highest standards, earning the trust and loyalty of its discerning clientele. Moreover, the company is very hands-on and

involved with our procurement process.

Nanda reveals, "We are able to distill our quality control practices into a singular idea: we would never sell something that we wouldn't wear ourselves.

Every piece of jewellery in our boutique is assessed before being showcased. Are the curves and shapes perfect? How is the structural integrity of the piece? Can it withstand the rigours of the environment it will be worn in? Is it comfortable to wear? How clean are the lines? Is the enamelling (meenakari) work expertly done, or is it shoddy? Does the colour of the gold reflect what our customers expect?"

Bridging Tradition and Modernity with the Signature Sahar and Santi Collections

In staying true to its mission of connecting loved ones through generations, Hi-Class Jewellers offers a diverse range of

jewellery that seamlessly blends tradition with contemporary elegance. The signature bridal collections, Sahar and Santi, epitomize the timeless allure of South Asian heritage while offering modern brides a chance to create their own legacy of love and tradition.

Recent trends in the jewellery business have seen a resurgence of classic designs and traditional materials, a trend that Hi-Class Jewellers embrace wholeheartedly. With its Sahar and Santi collections leading the way, the boutique continues to captivate brides with its exquisite craftsmanship and timeless beauty, offering a nod to the past while embracing the present.

Myths Debunked

Dispelling common myths and misconceptions, Hi-Class Jewellers challenges the notion that shopping for jewellery in India is inherently cheaper. By adopting

transparent pricing practices and prioritizing consumer-friendly approaches, the boutique ensures that customers receive fair value for their investments without the confusion often associated with traditional Indian business practices. "When we invite someone into our store, I like to think we're inviting them into our home. With this idea, we maintain the old-world Punjabi hospitality in our interactions," highlights Nanda.

Undoubtedly, Hi-Class Jewellers stands as a beacon of love, craftsmanship, and community connection. As it embarks on the next chapter of its journey, its legacy of connecting loved ones through generations will continue to shine bright, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity and celebrating the beauty of human connection for years to come.

DR. SHOHINI GHOSE

CTO, QUANTUM ALGORITHMS INSTITUTE & QUANTUM PHYSICIST

Cover Story

Dr. Shohini Ghose emerges as a brilliant thread in quantum physics, weaving her path through the cosmos of knowledge and breaking barriers for women in science. Born in Mumbai, India, Dr. Ghose's journey from a lone woman of colour majoring in physics and mathematics at Miami University in the '90s to becoming a professor of quantum physics at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo is a testament to her resilience and passion for unravelling the universe's secrets.

As an undergraduate student, Dr. Ghose confronted a lonely journey. The stark absence of fellow women, especially women of colour, in her classes made her feel invisible to those around her. However, her profound curiosity and love for solving the mysteries of the universe became the guiding light that kept her on her unique trajectory in quantum physics.

Today, Dr. Ghose stands at the forefront of quantum research, holding

QWhat does being a woman mean to you?

I think of myself as a human being. In my journey, being a woman has always been like being pigeonholed—as a woman, you don't belong in physics, etc., but as humans, we have a connection to the universe. To me, we must see each other as human beings.

QWho are your role models?

I would say Serena Williams. She is a true trailblazer, making the trail, walking it, and showing it to the world who tried to take her down. The second would be Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian astronaut to go into space. That was so powerful because up until then, one couldn't imagine an Indian going to space. Also, I really admire Urvashi Sinha, who is leading the Indian quantum internet program.

the position of Chief Technology Officer at the Quantum Algorithms Institute, a British Columbia-funded institution, which aims to bridge the gap between theoretical quantum computing concepts and real-world applications, commercializing ground-breaking ideas to shape the future of technology.

Beyond her achievements in research and academia, Dr. Ghose has become an inspiration for women in science. In 2013, she established the Center for Women in Science (WinS) at Wilfrid Laurier University. WinS addresses the systemic barriers and biases against women in STEM fields, fostering a more inclusive environment and creating pathways for women's careers in science.

Dr. Ghose's commitment to changing the narrative extends to her involvement in a national program focused on women in science. Holding a federally funded chair for women and science, she utilizes her position to build multiple initiatives and advocate for resources,

funding, and promotions for women in STEM.

Championing diversity and equality, Dr. Ghose challenges the prevalent stereotypes in science. She emphasizes the need to fix the system rather than expecting women to conform to biased environments. Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Ghose shares powerful insights: "Often you might feel isolated or that you don't belong, have imposter syndrome— but embrace it—if you're alone, it means you're different, have a different perspective, so enjoy being your unique self and every bit of the journey."

Dr. Ghose envisions a field where women represent 50% of participants. With her relentless pursuit of fundamental questions about the universe and ongoing projects like building a quantum internet in Canada, she continues to inspire a new generation to embrace the wonders of science.

Men need to be involved in women's empowerment - they have daughters, too, so it's good for everyone to empower each other. This involves providing women with the same opportunities that are extended to men. Especially in science, that can lead to twice as much talent and discoveries. Science needs women and women's empowerment.

QWhat's your favourite quote?

"The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible." - Albert Einstein.

QWhat's your advice to women seeking careers traditionally dominated by men?

You might feel isolated or feel like you don't belong there, perhaps grapple with imposter syndrome, but embrace it. If you're alone, you're different, have a different perspective, and are gatecrashing, so enjoy yourself. Whatever your situation is, enjoy it to the maximum and contribute.

CEO AT EXCEL CAREER COLLEGE

IIn the dynamic realm of post-secondary education, Bisman Arora stands out as a trailblazer, challenging age and gender norms to redefine success. Having moved to Canada at age six, her journey epitomizes the spirit of determination and entrepreneurial zeal deeply embedded in her roots. Arora's family, entrenched in the educational consulting business for over 27 years, provided the backdrop for her early exposure to the world of education. This foundation instilled in her the confidence to envision owning and operating a private post-secondary education institute.

The journey began four years ago when Arora acquired Excel Career College. Initially a small private career training college located in Courtenay on Vancouver Island, Arora transformed it into a comprehensive institute offering diverse business, finance, hospitality, legal, and medical courses. The institution expanded from a single campus to five campuses in British Columbia strategical-

ly located in Kelowna, Victoria, Courtney, Surrey, and Powell River. This outreach exemplifies Arora's vision to integrate education into remote communities. However, Arora acknowledges the hurdles she faced due to her age and gender. Cultural biases and skepticism about her capabilities surfaced when hiring or seeking a seat at industry tables. Nevertheless, these challenges only fueled her determination to follow her dreams and prove her mettle.

Reflecting on her journey, Arora shares powerful advice for aspiring women leaders: "Maintain your own identity, embrace your goals, surround yourself with the right people, have determination, passion, courage, and confidence to pursue your dreams." Arora believes that by staying true to yourself, saying focused on your aspirations and cultivating inner strengths and believe, one camn overcome obstacles and acheive yur greatest ambitions."

Arora's role model is her father,

Q&A

What is your advice to future women leaders?

who instilled in her the values of determination and overcoming age and gender barriers. She emphasizes the importance of mentorship, staying available, and keeping doors open for others.

For Arora, women's empowerment is about promoting equality and providing women with the power and space to have a say. She envisions creating environments that welcome women and men, allowing them to define their goals and contribute to the world. Her achievements include finding her voice, knowing herself, and being grateful for her parents' guidance.

Looking ahead, Arora aims to build international partnerships, globalize Excel, and establish educational facilities in underserved communities of British Columbia. Her future resonates with openness, embracing differences, and empowering others by sharing her knowledge and experiences, embodying the untapped capabilities of women in education and beyond.

Q Q

Maintain your identity, embrace your goals, and remember that nothing is too big to accomplish. Everything is attainable if you set your mind to it. Surround yourself with the right people. You have to have determination, passion, courage, and confidence.

QWhat does being a woman

mean to you?

This involves establishing an atmosphere inviting to other women, allowing for the freedom of mindset to set and achieve goals. Cultural barriers often lead us to impose limitations on ourselves, hence having the freedom to define one's identity, pursue aspirations and objectives, and make contributions to the world is crucial. As women, we possess numerous untapped capabilities.

QWhat are some of the challenges you have encountered on your journey?

People perceive me as young and mistakenly equate my business acumen with age. Sometimes, while hiring someone for a role, I confront biases related to age and culture. At the same time, the industry is predominantly led by men, making it difficult to secure a place at the table. Despite the challenges, these obstacles fuel my determination to pursue my dreams even more fervently.

QHow do you define success?

I believe that success is not defined by accolades or achievements but by our impact and the lives we touch along the way.

How do you interpret Women's empowerment?

Women's empowerment is about promoting equality, giving women the power and appropriate space so they feel they have a say and that having a seat at the table and access to resources is natural. It is also important to remember that women have shared experiences that have brought them here, which can be very powerful.

We all face different barriers and experiences. Early on in my career, someone told me that I should be one of the boys if I wanted to succeed, and then I would be exposed to the best opportunities. While many would have given in, I did not, as it would compromise who I was and my upbringing, so I continued to lean into who I was.

RADHA CURPEN

VICE CHAIR AND VANCOUVER MANAGING PARTNER & NATIONAL LEADER, ESG STRATEGY AND SOLUTIONS, CO-HEAD ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PRACTICE BENNETT JONES LLP

Cover Story

In Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), Radha Curpen emerges as a distinguished force, weaving her legal prowess with a deep commitment to sustainability. Serving as the Vice Chair, Vancouver Managing Partner, and National Leader of ESG Strategy at Bennett Jones LLP, she stands at the forefront of ESG strategy development and co-leads the environmental practice group.

Curpen embarked on her journey in ESG long before it became a buzzword. Born in Mauritius and immigrating to Winnipeg, Manitoba, when she was 16, she delved into the environmental law landscape in the 1990s. Driven by a passion for bridging the gap between aspiration and reality, she recognized ESG as a transformative tool for decision-making, enabling firms to navigate complexities and future-proof their operations.

Her educational journey, inspired by her father's encouragement to pursue law due to her natural inclination for advocacy, led her through various

provinces and countries. From Winnipeg to Toronto and eventually to New York City, Curpen's adaptability and resilience in embracing change have been pivotal in her career. She is Francophone and practices law in both official languages, a unique attribute that distinguishes her in her field.

The path to success, however, was challenging. Early in her career, Curpen faced the expectation to conform to a certain mould for success, a normative pressure she resisted. Her refusal to compromise her values and identity while navigating a male-dominated industry underscores her commitment to authenticity.

Despite the hurdles, Curpen's achievements resonate in her successful career trajectory, marked by changing provinces and countries multiple times. Her love for challenges and change has provided personal growth and resilience and shaped her ability to navigate diverse environments.

Q&A

QWhat is your mantra for success?

QMake sure you know that there are things you don't know. People's experiences in life are different from yours. These experiences colour their views. If you listen to them, you'll deal with your blind spots, and in doing so, you'll build trust and engagement and nurture positive relationships.

QWhat would you advise those who feel inspired by your journey?

After living in many places, which cities are your favourite?

lies in legal professionals taking a seat at the table, actively contributing to an area of both risk and opportunity. As the momentum for ESG grows, driven by public awareness and shareholder activism, she envisions a dynamic field that aligns with the sense of purpose younger generations seek.

She advises the younger generation to "seek continuous learning, seek mentorship, and build credibility, which are the keystones of success for aspiring professionals. Embrace diverse experiences and acknowledge blind spots, and you'll build trust and engage meaningfully with your peers."

In her quest for success, Radha Curpen maintains a daily routine rooted in mindfulness and continuous learning. Her vision extends beyond legal practice; she envisions the legal profession contributing significantly to the evolving landscape of ESG, nurturing positive relationships, and promoting a sustainable future for all.

QI love Vancouver; it's beautiful. What people like to recreate in other cities - water bodies, mountains, parks, we already have these things here. My second favourite place would be New York City - I love that place's energy, pace, and overall vibe.

QLearn as much as you can and then some. Become an expert. Have a clear outlook on your vision and what path you want to take. Put yourself out there. Seek those mentors and be an active mentee in return. Think about how you can be helpful to others. Over time, develop a bond and create a sense of peering. Also, build your credibility not just inside the organization but also outside the walls. Both will be noticed and complimentary.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I have managed to have a successful career despite changing provinces and countries several times. Change has been challenging, memorable and constant - and I have embraced it. Every time I had to adapt to new places, I've learnt about people, places, relationships, and connections. Change has helped me learn new things and given me the nerve and courage to do more. I love challenges and change.

What are some of the challenges you have encountered on your journey?

We all face different barriers and experiences. Early on in my career, someone told me that I should be one of the boys if I wanted to succeed, and then I would be exposed to the best opportunities. While many would have given in, I did not, as it would compromise who I was and my upbringing, so I continued to lean into who I was. I continued to distinguish myself with my values.

Be gentle with yourself and build a practice. Be open to figuring out what you want to create, reach out to people, and hone your skills. Reading is important. If you want to buy a dining room table, you want to make sure it has four sturdy legs. One of the key skills is reading.

Cover Story

In the tapestry of South Asian women achievers, Renee Sarojini Saklikar stands as a luminary, weaving the threads of her diverse experiences into the artistry of poetry. Born in Pune and transplanted to Canada as a young girl, her early years were marked by isolation and loneliness in remote areas. This solitude birthed Saklikar's profound connection to language and sound, leading her to find solace in the magic of storytelling and the sanctuary of her written words.

Inspired by her mother's struggle as an immigrant to express herself in English, Saklikar took to writing to explore interactions with the world. She recalls her childhood as a bittersweet journey, during which writing became a safe space to navigate the complexities of identity and loneliness.

As an instructor at KPU and an active participant in the literary community, Saklikar's influence extends beyond

her pen. Serving on boards, conducting workshops, and volunteering in organizations like the Surrey International Writers Conference, she has become a vital force, nurturing both her creative practice and the aspiring writers around her. Though marked by breaks and traumas, her journey as a writer blossomed through programs like SFU's Writer's Studio. Despite initially grappling with self-worth, Saklikar discovered her poetic voice later in life. With five books under her belt and working on her sixth, she continuously evolves, refusing to replicate the same artistic pattern.

Saklikar's recent venture into a multi-book series combining poetry with novels reflects her commitment to addressing pressing issues. The themes of climate change, social justice, and representation of women of colour underscore her desire to create narratives that resonate with her experiences.

Emphasizing the importance

QWhat impact do you think and hope your work has on people?

I hope they'll pick up the book and feel really cared for. I hope they'll love and dive into the worldbuilding, characters and magic I create through my words.

QWhat's your mantra for success?

I try to do a little bit of writing, a little bit of reading, and a little bit of dancing. I think of my life as a practice—I break down the things I want to do into little chunks and consistently do a little bit every day. That, I feel, is the secret of living a good life.

of daily practice, she encourages aspiring artists "to be gentle with themselves, build a routine, and stay open to the creative universe." For Saklikar, success lies not in external validation but in commitment to the work itself.

One of her cherished quotes, attributed to Martha Graham, encapsulates the essence of keeping the creative channel open. Saklikar advises those navigating multiple cultural identities to build a practice, be open to creation, and cherish the skill of reading.

As Saklikar continues to craft worlds with her words, she hopes her readers feel cared for and find a haven in her stories. Through her poetry, she invites us to explore the magic of language and the transformative power of storytelling. In the tapestry of South Asian women achievers, Renee Sarojini Saklikar stands as a vibrant thread, weaving the beauty of diversity and resilience into the literary landscape.

QWhat would you advise those who feel inspired by your journey?

Be gentle with yourself and build a practice. Be open to figuring out what you want to create, reach out to people, and hone your skills. Reading is important. If you want to buy a dining room table, you want to ensure it has four sturdy legs. One of the key skills is reading.

QWhat are some of the challenges you have encountered on your journey?

QOne of the hardest things for artists, writers, or any type of creative is understanding why they are worthy of doing this work. Why would their work matter?

How can they bring their story out into the world when there's already so much there, so much that’s great? It's a struggle encapsulated in the "why bother blues."

What's your favourite quote?

"It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open." -

HARP SOHAL

FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR PINK ORCHID STUDIO, PINK ORCHID STUDIO COSMETICS HARPERLIVING.CA

t the helm of Pink Orchid Studio, Harp Sohal orchestrates a symphony of creativity, managing studios across North America, spearheading a cosmetic line, and delving into the realm of DIY and home traditions. Despite her multifaceted responsibilities, she remains a devoted full-time mom, embodying the essence of a modern woman who thrives in every aspect of her life.

Sohal's journey began with an unyielding passion for makeup and hair, a pursuit initially perceived as unconventional by societal standards. Encountering initial resistance, she persisted, revolutionizing the industry and winning accolades such as the BC Best Wedding Award for Pink Orchid Studio six times consecutively. Sohal's strategic use of social media, especially Facebook, was pivotal in achieving global recognition for her brand.

Beyond her thriving career, Sohal is deeply invested in giving back

to the community. The Facing the Mirror program, initiated by her, offers a transformative experience for women facing challenges such as illness or abuse. Providing free hair and makeup classes, along with empowering photoshoots, Sohal aims to instill confidence and inner strength in these women, recognizing that beauty is more than skin deep.

Sohal's commitment to integrity and open communication forms the bedrock of her success. Overcoming the initial challenges of being underestimated, especially as a South Asian woman, she carved a niche for herself and her academy. Today, Pink Orchid Studio stands as a force to be reckoned with, a testament to Sohal's resilience and dedication.

In her powerful quote, Sohal encapsulates the essence of womanhood:

"I love being a woman, a shapeshifter. I love working with hair and makeup and becoming whoever, I want to be that day. It helps me feel empowered."

Her authenticity on social media serves as an inspiration, encouraging others to fight for their dreams with courage. Her greatest achievement lies in the success of her students, seeing them surpass her and pass on the legacy of Pink Orchid Studio to the next generation.

Sohal draws inspiration from the strong women around her. Their unwavering support and wisdom fuel her daily drive to be a better person. She advises others to be resilient, move forward without self-doubt, and face challenges head-on.

As a master artist, entrepreneur, and mentor, Harp Sohal's secret to success lies in perseverance. Her journey reflects the belief that talent may open doors, but perseverance propels one forward. Sohal's story is an ode to the resilience of South Asian women, a celebration of breaking barriers, and a reminder that every challenge can be overcome with a steadfast spirit.

QWhat would you advise those who feel inspired by your journey?

Be resilient, and don't question or doubt yourself. Just keep going forward. The only way forward is through. If you go through it head-on, you get through it.

QWhat or who inspires you to be better every day?

QWhat do you consider as your greatest achievement?

QI would say all the people who have graduated from Pink Orchid Studio. For me, that is building a legacy. Some of my students have surpassed me. I am passionate about passing the baton on to the next generation.

QMy mother-in-law! She calls me every day, no matter what. She told me you are marrying my pride and joy, but no matter what happens, just treat me like a mother, and I'll treat you like a daughter, and she kept her promise. She calls me, checks on me, and shares such great wisdom. If I could be half the woman she is, I would consider myself very lucky.

What's your mantra for success?

Perseverance. Just keep at it. Perseverance will outweigh talent. I say this to my artists: You could be the most talented artists, but if you don't have empathy, perseverance, or the guts to wake up and chase your dreams, you'll not get those bookings. You'll only get those bookings if you do the work. Whenever a door slammed on my face, I knocked on another one. I know that, somehow, I'll make it through. There's always a solution.

What does being a woman mean to you?

As women, we have the ability to wear many hats. I feel there's no limit to what we can do. I love being a woman, a shapeshifter. I love working with hair and makeup and becoming whoever I want to be that day. It helps me feel empowered. At the same time, being a woman involves having a strong sense of identity and realizing that our bodies change at different times, which we must adapt to. So, just having the wisdom and being grateful for what we have but still hungry for growth.

MD CCFP PHYSICIAN, PAST PRESIDENT OF DOCTORS OF BC, PRESIDENT-ELECT FOR THE FEDERATION OF MEDICAL WOMEN OF CANADA

Ramneek Dosanjh, a trailblazer in the medical field, holds various roles as the Past President of Doctors of BC and President-elect for the Federation of Medical Women of Canada. Her primary mission is advocacy, focusing on the professional, social, and personal advancement of women physicians and the overall well-being of women in society.

As a hospitalist with clinical responsibilities at Peacearch Hospital, Dosanjh combines her medical expertise with a commitment to advancing women's health issues. Her advocacy now extends to global platforms, where she will present at the UN Commission on the Status of Women, emphasizing women's empowerment and healthcare equity.

Dosanjh's accomplishments resonate deeply with her dedication to healthcare transformation. Elected as the second woman of colour in 122 years to be President-elect of Doctors of BC in 2021, she played a pivotal role in dis-

rupting primary care and helping create the Longitudinal Family Practice Payment Model. The collaboration with the Ministry of Health aimed to reduce the attrition of family doctors and improve primary care. She also helped challenge gender inequities in the physician payment schedule, advocating for fair compensation, especially concerning women's health, maternity and pediatric care.

Dosanjh believes her most significant achievement is the upcoming opportunity to address the UN CSW alongside the American Medical Women's Association. Dreaming of impacting women and girls globally, she aspires to work toward gender equity, justice, and education on an international scale. Mentorship, leadership, and guidance are key aspects she plans to offer to all girls, encouraging them to strive for more.

Dosanjh highlights the urgent need for a better healthcare human resource strategy, addressing physician burnout and decolonizing the current

QWhat would you advise those who feel inspired by your journey?

I would say go for it. Make sure it's your passion and aligned with your morals and values. Medicine is one of the most rigorous programs. I consider it an honour to be able to take care of my patients.

QWhat does being a woman mean to you?

QWhat's your mantra for success?

I believe if there's will, God will make a way. I trust the universe. Everything is a journey, and there's a reason. Just lead a purpose-driven life and listen to your inner voice. Everyone has a different journey and purpose, and sometimes, you're in a space that makes you uncomfortable, and you feel you don't belong there—you have to listen to these whispers.

QAs a woman, I feel spiritually connected to Mother Earth and my ancestors differently. Being able to bear children—which I understand is not for everybody—was part of my privilege and honour to have my three girls. Also, being a woman, I take pride in advocating for women because when women are honoured and empowered, we live up to our ideals.

What are some of the values you live by?

I would say - integrity, honesty, empathy, compassion, grit, and resilience.

medical system. Her ultimate goal is to witness improved health outcomes for patients through stronger attachments to family healthcare providers.

As a woman, Dosanjh feels a spiritual connection to Mother Earth and her ancestors. She takes pride in advocating for women, recognizing that their empowerment is essential for an ideal society. Her inspiration comes from her family, particularly her mother, brother, sister, daughters, and father, whose work ethic and grit have left a lasting impact. She believes human rights are non-negotiable and trusts the universe to guide her on a purpose-driven journey.

Her secret to success lies in the mantra "where there's a will, there's a way," trusting the universe and listening to her inner voice. Dosanjh's life is a testament to the power of purpose and determination, paving the way for future generations of South Asian women in medicine.

QHow do you stay motivated?

My three daughters keep me motivated and grounded. They are my legacy project, and I hope I can raise them better than my mom raised me. Also, nothing was given to me; nothing is ever handed to a woman of colour. You have to work ten times harder than a white man or woman. Your representation speaks for you before you enter a room. So, it's been challenging and rewarding at the same time. I am the first Punjabi in my lineage to be a doctor, and what keeps me motivated is that I live for all those women who didn't have these opportunities.

SOFIA WALIA

FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER & U-18 NATIONAL TEAM COACH CANADA

ofia Walia's journey from a young girl playing field hockey with her uncles to becoming a renowned Canadian hockey figure is a testament to her resilience and dedication. Starting at 5, when there were no girls' teams, Walia embraced every sport until 14, when she earned a spot in the senior national field hockey team, representing Canada. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career.

At 17, Walia received multiple NCAA offers and secured a Full Ride scholarship at Rutgers University, playing Division 1 field hockey. Majoring in Public Health and minoring in Psychology and Education, she managed a full academic load while excelling in sports. This experience honed her time management skills and allowed her to compete at the highest level.

Returning to Vancouver, Walia joined UBC Nursing School's accelerated program, becoming a registered nurse and clinical educator with the Provin-

cial Health Authority. Currently, she is training to become a medical professional. Simultaneously, she delved into coaching, contributing to the U-16 and U-18 national field hockey teams, ultimately becoming the lead for Junior programming.

Beyond her playing and coaching roles, Walia initiated the premier team, "The Tigers Field Hockey Club," representing Surrey in the Vancouver Women's League. Despite her demanding schedule, she wakes up at 5 a.m. for training, works as a clinical educator, attends schoolwork, and fits in a workout, showcasing her exceptional time management skills.

Walia's achievements include a Top 11 award at the national championship, selection for the Tournament 11 allstar team, and coaching for Team Canada. In 2013, she established a field hockey team that funds various charities.

Q&A

QWhat would you advise those who feel inspired by your journey?

QDon't get comfortable; become comfortable being uncomfortable and challenge yourself every day. And always be grateful for people who see something in you.

QWhat impact do you wish to have on those around you?

I want to continue sharing my experience and opening the doors for girls in high-performance sports. I want to inspire girls in the community to aspire for more and play at a higher level.

What is your mantra for success?

Asian to play at Rutgers, Walia faced challenges. However, she used these opportunities to educate others. Her role models are her parents, Harbhajan and Atit Walia. Inspiration stems from her desire to give back to the community in the form of Seva and motivate young girls to pursue high-performance training.

Walia's aspirations include growing the game in her community, coaching for Team Canada, and continuing her athletic journey. She wants to inspire and open doors for girls in high-performance sports, emphasizing the importance of honest intent and respect.

In Walia's eyes, being a woman is powerful, and she advocates for unity and empowerment among women. Her secret to success lies in tackling challenges head-on and doing the hard things first, a philosophy that has propelled her to remarkable heights in both sports and healthcare. Walia's legacy extends beyond the field, impacting young girls and aspiring athletes in her community.

QI believe in doing the hard things first. Challenge your brain and thought process; for instance, if you don't want to run, then you must go for a run and train your mind to follow instructions.

QWhat/ who inspires you to be better every day?

I felt burnt out after completing my degree in the US. So, what kept me going was my motivation to do something for and with the community. I need to know my why and raise the game for all girls in my community.

What are some of the challenges you have encountered on your journey?

I've been the only Punjabi girl in the Big Ten conference and the first brown girl to play at Rutgers, but the team was accepting of me, and I took it as a great opportunity to educate others about my culture and beliefs.

Also, the fact that I have a broad built and heavier bone structure, which drives people to make comments on my body, I feel not all women who play sports need to look the same. There is stereotyping of how an athletic person should look.

There are some people who have the grit and determination to not only seek the light but also become the light themselves. Women’s rights activist Manasi Pradhan is one of these remarkable individuals.

There are some people who have the grit and determination to not only seek the light but also become the light themselves. Women’s rights activist Manasi Pradhan is one of these remarkable individuals.

Hailing from a small village in Odisha called Ayatpur, Pradhan is a woman of courage and conviction who

has defied norms to become a leading voice in empowering women in India. Despite facing several challenges, including societal norms that deemed education for girls taboo, Pradhan not only completed her higher studies, but also started her non-profit organization — OYSS Women, which champions the women empowerment movement in India.

Life might seem difficult at this point, but you have to take it up as a challenge and put up with it. Do not lose faith in yourself and believe in your inner strength to fight all odds.'

Reflecting on her journey, Pradhan shares, “Looking back, many things seem to be a dream for me. A dream that I believe anyone coming from where I came can achieve, but for me, at that point, it was next to impossible. I had no examples, no precedent to refer to. Female education was a taboo in my village. However, I believed from an early age that being in school was the gateway to the world.”

Breaking stereotypes was her major challenge, Pradhan asserts, “I think the prime challenge here was breaking the stereotype that girls are not meant to study. But I was resolute, and my parents supported me. They sold off their land to shift to the town so I could continue my higher education. I was the first in my community to graduate from high school and then complete my undergrad, master's, and even law.”

After completing her studies, Pradhan started working to provide financial support to her family. Later, driven by her literary interests and entrepreneur-

ial spirit, Pradhan even established her printing press. But her vision extended beyond personal success. She shares, “I wanted to do something for the society. I wanted to support everyone, who was facing challenges to meet their needs, to access basic education and other critical services, which is considered a basic right. And that’s when I established the NGO OYSS Women in 1987.”

Today, Pradhan also spearheads the Honour for Women National Campaign, a nationwide movement to end violence against women in India. She says, “As I began my journey in activism, there were a multitude of social issues that we were tackling. A pressing matter was the increasing crime and violence against women. And I decided I needed to focus specifically on handling it. This was the beginning of the Honour for Women National Campaign, which currently has a membership of over 20,000 people from different walks of life. We are operational across 24 states and in 10 countries across Asia and Europe. We aim at escalating our campaign to every corner of the world, as violence against women exists in every nook and cranny.”

Pradhan has also founded Nirbhaya Vahini and Nirbhaya Samaroh. She explains, “Nirbhaya Vahini was launched to prepare an army of gender advocates cutting across different walks of life, who will advocate for their own rights as well as the rights of other people. With over 20,000 volunteers in India and over 4,000 globally, we conduct consultations, and training sessions, and engage with officials to ensure gender mainstreaming in policies and implementation. On the other hand, Nirbhaya Samaroh is an annual

event that brings together leaders from different fields who have contributed to gender equality, featuring performances that aim to shift mindsets and raise awareness.”

Further explaining some of the achievements of OYSS, Pradhan says, “One of the key achievements for OYSS has been the establishment of the four-point charter and its subsequent implementation through strong advocacy and campaigning. Having identified the key drivers exacerbating violence against women, it was recognised that four key aspects need to be considered in terms of

impacting the grassroots in India. Firstly, a campaign to stop the illegal use of liquor, which is a root cause of domestic violence, sexual abuse, assault, and harassment, among others. Second, self-defence training for women at different levels, with a specific emphasis on educational institutes, could be a platform for incul-

cating this at a very fundamental stage. In legal terms, demand for a special protection force, especially in the hotspot areas, and further to fast-track the concerned cases, a fast-track wing, and a special investigating and prosecuting wing for crime against women in every district.”  Pradhan has received several awards, including the Rani Laskhmibai Stree Shakti Puraskar, from the President of India in 2014. When asked about the impact of these accolades, she says, “The recognition boosts our confidence and encourages more people to join us, which is crucial. For decades, we have seen women fight for basic services and basic rights, and it continues. It won't change unless people from different factions come together and take active action towards achieving gender equality in our society.” Pradhan concludes the interview with a powerful message for young girls. She says, “For every young girl out there, I would like to tell her that — 'Life might seem difficult at this point, but you have to take it up as a challenge and put up with it. Do not lose faith in yourself and believe in your inner strength to fight all odds.' I strongly believe we need to encourage every girl, from a very young age, to be extremely confident. And lastly, each one of us needs to empathize with others. Oftentimes, I see people negate empathy; however, I think it is the most important aspect, and we need to promote the culture of empathy more and more.”

OYSS women strongly believe in inclusivity and encourage people from any field to come and join them as members. For more information: visit - www.oyss.org.in/

Summer Body

Your Two-Month Transformation Guide

Unlock the Secrets to a summer-ready silhouette with simple lifestyle tweaks

As the mercury rises, so does the anticipation for summer adventures. Whether it's a dream vacation, endless beach days, or simply wanting to feel confident in lighter clothes, achieving that coveted summer body becomes a priority for many. With just two months to go, it might seem daunting, but fear not!

A blend of targeted workouts, nutritional adjustments, and lifestyle changes can transform your physique and boost your confidence. Here's your comprehensive guide to turning heads this summer.

Revamp Your Diet

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in sculpting a summer-ready body. Start by incorporating protein in every meal to fuel muscle repair and growth. Eliminate snacking and cut out alcoholic beverages to avoid empty calories. Opt for foods that combat cellulite, such as those rich in antioxidants, and adhere to a low-bloat diet to keep your stomach flat. Remember,

hydration is key; aim for at least eight glasses of water a day to flush out toxins and keep hunger at bay.

Intensify Your Workouts

While diet shapes your body from the inside, exercise sculpts it from the outside. Integrate a mix of cardiovascular exercises and strength training into your routine. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can maximize fat burn in minimal time, while targeted strength exercises will tone your muscles. Focus on compound movements like squats, lunges, and push-ups for full-body engagement. Consistency is crucial; aim for at least 4-5 weekly sessions to see significant changes.

Prioritize Sleep and Recovery

Underestimating the power of rest is a common mistake. Adequate sleep, around 7-9 hours per night, is essential for muscle recovery and hormonal balance,

which aids in weight loss. Incorporate relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga, to reduce stress levels, as high cortisol can lead to fat accumulation, especially around the midsection.

Stay Consistent and Motivated

Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals can significantly enhance your motivation and focus. Use a fitness tracker or journal to monitor your progress and identify patterns or areas for improvement. Incorporating variety in your workout routine can keep you engaged and prevent plateauing. Find a workout buddy or join a fitness community for additional support and accountability. Celebrating milestones, no matter how small, can boost your morale and keep you on track.

Embrace a Holistic Approach

A comprehensive fitness plan extends beyond physical activity to include mental and emotional wellness. Allocate time for activities that rejuvenate your spirit, such as mindfulness meditation, leisure time in nature, or engaging in hobbies you love. Practice self-compassion and positive selftalk to maintain a balanced perspective on your fitness journey.

Incorporating practices that align with your values and enhance your overall quality of life can make your fitness journey more enjoyable and sustainable.

Achieving a summer-ready body is a multifaceted endeavour that requires more than just diet and exercise adjustments. It's about cultivating a lifestyle that supports your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By focusing on comprehensive wellness, you're working towards a more aesthetically pleasing physique and building a foundation for long-term health and happiness. Remember, the journey to a healthier you is a marathon, not a sprint; embrace the process and enjoy the transformation.

Sweating Out Solitude

The Role of Physical Activity in Overcoming Loneliness as We Age

Sure, engaging in physical activities has well-documented health benefits. But time and again, researchers have consistently highlighted additional advantages. Beyond improving mood and instilling discipline while reducing stress, studies have also identified a correlation between physical activity and loneliness. Various forms of exercise, such as swimming, gym workouts, yoga, or Pilates, have significantly alleviated feelings of severe loneliness and social isolation.

Moreover, these benefits are not just temporary; they also have long-term implications. Investing your time and money in activities you can sustain over time helps you maintain fitness and provides support during lonely periods. We spoke to a few women whose lives have changed with the help of physical activity....

'Doing yoga makes me feel less alone'

Vidya Prabhu, a 47-year-old woman, has a beautiful family. However, with her husband frequently away for work and her daughter busy with college, there were moments when she felt lonely. "We tend to depend on others when we're lonely. Of course, it's great to have people to hang out with when you feel isolated. But not every day is your lucky day. There are times when everyone is busy with their stuff, and it isn't fair to put that pressure on someone else. Over the last few years, I've taken to yoga. I

do a mix of in-person and online yoga classes as part of my daily routine... it not only boosts my mental health, but I've also reduced my dependence on others, and this one-and-a-half-hour activity makes me feel rejuvenated and less alone," she says.

Workout, sleep well, feel less isolated

Recent research suggests that loneliness may be linked to poor sleep quality and insomnia. However, the effects don't stop there. It can affect daytime functioning, which might, in turn, increase your sense of isolation. Neelam Ravi, a 60-year-old teacher, has found a way to deal with this. "After retirement, you suddenly feel you have a lot of time. While we always say there's so little time but so much to do, there have been days when I felt 'What else can I do with this much time?'. While I have always been into fitness, even when I was working, I felt the need to stay consistent, especially during this time," says Neelam. "I do a mix of jogging and walking. Engaging in physical activities, to whatever extent I can, makes me feel tired and helps me go to bed early. I finish my morning chores, read, do grocery runs, and have lunch, and in the evenings, I head outside for a walk or jog. Once I am home, I make a quick dinner and head straight to bed. This way, I hardly feel 'lonely.' Imagine if there was nothing to do in the evenings?" she asks.

Getting out for a workout makes me

feel less alone

For a few others, engaging in outdoor physical activities soothes the dull ache of loneliness. Fifty-three-year-old Nandini Reddy copes by going out for a swim. "Getting out of my home reminds me that I am not alone in the world," she smiles. "I chose to stay single and am happy with that decision. But just like how loneliness hits everyone at some stage, I do have those moments. However, those few hours of swimming make me snap out of it like no other activity. I am sure this is a cliché, but I feel refreshed after a swim."

I workout during the time period when I feel lonely Radhika Arun has identified a specific time period during which she feels most lonely and has chosen to engage in physical activity during that time. "In the mornings, I always have something to do, such as grocery shopping or meeting a friend in the evenings. It's during the mid-mornings that I feel the loneliest. So, I decided to schedule my gym session for that time. Fortunately, I usually have the entire gym (or close to it) to myself because hardly any people are working out at that hour. With its fantastic view, those few hours alone at the gym are the best. Once I return home, I resume my routine, and then the day ends," she explains.

These stories highlight the transformative power of physical activity in combating loneliness. Whether it's through yoga, jogging, swimming, or hitting the gym, individuals have found solace and companionship in their exercise routines. As research continues to emphasize the link between physical activity and mental well-being, it's clear that dedicating time to sweat it out strengthens the body and nourishes the soul. So, the next time you feel lonely, consider lacing up your sneakers or rolling out your yoga mat. You might just find that the path to solace is paved with sweat and endorphins.

If you noted Emma Stone’s toga-style peach gown at the BAFTAs this year, you witnessed the red-carpet debut of Peach Fuzz, the colour of the year declared by Pantone, the U.S.-based colour matching system.

Pantone’s anointing of Peach Fuzz means it will dominate decorating and fashion trends throughout 2024 and possibly beyond. Unlike previous years’ more dramatic hues, an easy way to embrace this soft, orangey colour trend is through makeup. This is a shade that flatters most skin tones, though it’s most suited to warmer-hued complexions, says Shannon Calvert, Benefit’s National Brow and Beauty Authority. “However,” she expands, “the great thing about this soft

peach colour is the versatility it offers. Peach Fuzz has both warm and cool undertones, so it really can look beautiful on all skin tones.”

Sara Wren, Director of Artistry at Milk Makeup, concurs that Peach Fuzz is a “very wearable, cheerful tone that can work across most skin tones. Blue eyes, in particular, will stand out with peachy based tones. “

The most enhancing way to wear it, no matter one’s complexion, is with a peachytoned blush, says Suzanne Gagne, training manager for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Canada. Lighter skin tones work well with pinky-peach hue. Calvert agrees to “simply sweep a peachy blush along the high points of the cheeks placing it in a C formation and dust a little on the

bridge of the nose.” She references Benefit’s WANDERful World Silky-Soft Powder Blush “peachin’ as a shade “to encapsulate this peachy glow.”

Gagne adds that peach tones can be used to help balance skin tone colour. “Pro makeup artists also love to colour correct with peach as it will colour correct brown/

grey/greenish discoloration under the eyes,” Gagne explains. “Peach is great for colour correcting dark circles, pigmentation, and dark spots on the skin.”

For a subtle application, Wren says lip oils and glosses are good options and suggests Milk’s Odyssey Lip Oil Gloss in Explore “for a soft coral shimmer that hydrates lips while adding a peach fuzz pop.”

Gagne says Bobbi Brown’s Sunset Glow Highlighting Powder gives the complexion a glowy effect that enhances all skin tones.

Another way to wear Peach Fuzz subtly, Calvert advises, is with the under blushing technique. “Take a tint and apply it prior to your foundation, this will give a subtle hint of colour.”

To add drama, Calvert recommends creating a monochromatic look with eyes, lips and cheeks.

DARPAN Beauty
PICTURES COURTESY: WWW.SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Gagne says, for a dramatic take, focus on the eyes. “Peach eyeshadow will enhance blue or green eyes, making them pop,” she says. “Add drama with shimmer and glow.”

For a seasonal approach to using the colour, all three experts say look for shine and shimmer in the warmer months. Wren suggests that when spring and summer arrive, try to be experimental with peach eye liners and more shimmery, neon shades of peach. Calvert likes the idea of going all monochromatic for the warm seasons, saying she would love to see it in “all its boldness.” Gagne concurs a monochromatic approach is a flattering look for summer.

For the cooler seasons, Wren sees deeper, more subtle peach tones working best by positioning the shade on cheeks and lips. Calvert agrees, saying go with a little on the cheeks and nose. “In the winter months when our skin is naturally lighter from lack of sun, reach for the brighter peachy shades to brighten winter skin,” Gagne advises.

So, is Pantone’s Peach Fuzz a colour that’s appropriate for any age to wear? Absolutely, declares Gagne. “Any age can wear Peach Fuzz. In fact, mature skin looks stunning in coral and peach shades. Peach fuzz is youthful, playful and fun,” she says.

Calvert believes Peach Fuzz is such a beautiful colour because anyone can pull it off, no matter their age. She notes that it was a “super-hot’ hue in the ‘80s, so she envisions “those of all ages [will be] rocking this look, whether it’ll be worn in fashion or beauty.”

Wren recommends having fun with your style, whatever your age, by experimenting with textures and shades. “Live your look,” she advises.

Reflecting on one of my most memorable journeys, Bali stands out as a quintessential escape where the vibrancy of culture and the serenity of nature blend seamlessly. Known as the 'Island of the Gods,' Bali is a canvas painted with the deep greens of its mountains, the vivid hues of its cultural tapestry, and the azure of its surrounding seas. Years ago, I ventured to this island, and it remains etched in my memory as an extraordinary adventure, combining pristine beaches, majestic mountains, tantalizing food, and an enriching culture—it was the perfect amalgamation of experiences.

In the heart of Bali, daily life is an art form, punctuated by the fragrance of 'canang sari'—the daily offerings that are as much a feast for the gods as they are for the senses. These vibrant traditions are matched by the island's storytelling dances, which are not mere performances but living narratives of ancient mythology. The sacred temples, such as Tanah Lot and Besakih, are

Journey to Komodo: Realm of the Dragon

Venturing beyond Bali, the Komodo National Park awaits. Home to the prehistoric Komodo dragon, this natural wonder is accessible by a scenic boat journey, which is an adventure in itself. The park's rugged hillsides, dry forests,

deeply rooted in the island's spiritual soil, rising from the earth against the backdrop of natural splendour. They serve as active hubs of worship, inviting travellers to witness the island's devout heart and to partake in a spirituality that is as welcoming as it is profound.

Bali's allure extends to its role as a muse for storytellers and filmmakers, capturing the imagination of audiences worldwide. My own footsteps traced those of famed characters, from the soul-searching journey in 'Eat Pray Love' to the high-stakes chase scenes of 'Skyfall.' Each visit to these iconic locations was like stepping into a celluloid dream, adding a touch of movie magic to my exploration.

Whether seeking a family-friendly journey or an escapade with friends, Bali's appeal is universal. It caters to every traveller's fantasy, offering various experiences—from nature tours that educate and enchant children to vibrant nightlife and entertainment that animate the evenings. Each person

can carve out their own paradise, be it through adrenaline-filled activities or serene moments of bliss.

My exploration was also a testament to Bali's evolving story as a leader in sustainable tourism. Staying in boutique eco-resorts and engaging with local conservation initiatives, I wit nessed firsthand the island's dedication to preserving its enchanting environ ment. It was a journey that provided rest and recreation and instilled a sense of responsibility and connection to the earth.

In Bali, the ancient and the contemporary, the sacred and the playful, the tranquil and the exhilarat ing coexist harmoniously. My trip to this enchanting island was a mosaic of experiences, each piece a story, each day an adventure, culminating in a voyage that was truly one of the best. Bali is not just a destination; it's a journey that starts with the scenic and reaches into the soul.

and white sandy beaches set the stage for a real-life Jurassic Park experience, with guided tours ensuring a safe encounter with these magnificent reptiles.

The pink sands of wonder

Amidst the azure blue of the sea, Pink Beach stands out with its coral-kissed sand. This natural phenomenon is a perfect playground for snorkelers and beach lovers alike. The beach's unique coloration contrasts the clear waters, offering an almost otherworldly beach experience.

Temples and traditions

No visit to Bali is complete without immersing oneself in its spiritual lineage. The island's temples, like Uluwatu and

Tirta Empul, are not only architectural marvels but also active places of pilgrimage. Witness the purification ritual at the holy springs or the fire dance at sunset, and you'll feel the spiritual energy integral to Balinese culture.

Hidden Corners: Amed and the East

Away from the beaten path, eastern Bali holds its own allure. Amed offers a quieter side of Bali with its tranquil fishing villages and outstanding marine life. It's a haven for divers and those seeking to connect with the island's more traditional way of life.

Feasting in Bali: A Culinary Odyssey

Bali's cuisine is as complex as its culture. Sampling local dishes like 'nasi campur' or the famous 'babi guling' is not just about eating; it's about experiencing Bali's history and heritage through taste. Cooking classes offer a hands-on approach to understanding and appreciating the island's flavours.

Conclusion: Bali's Enduring Charm

Bali, with its rich culture, stunning natural beauty, and the spirit of its people, promises an enriching and unforgettable journey. Beyond its shores, the adventure continues, leading you to the land of dragons and pink beaches. Bali isn't just a destination; it's an invitation to explore, discover, and fall in love with the world again.

Five Fresh Ideas To Embrace The Season Indoors With Spring Cleaning Tips

As the sensation of spring draws near, we're not only greeted by the gentle warmth of the sun and the revival of nature but also by the opportunity to refresh our living spaces. Spring clean-

Plant Theory & Indoor Air Quality

Incorporating plants into your home decor beautifies your space and improves indoor air quality, an essential aspect of spring cleaning. Choose air-purifying plants like spider plants or peace lilies that thrive indoors and place them in areas with ample sunlight.

This creates a healthier living environment while bringing some outdoor spring beauty inside. Ensure you also clean the leaves of indoor plants to remove dust and allow them to breathe and absorb light more effectively.

season's vibrancy. Whether it's through updating fabric choices, adding lively accents, or introducing fresh florals, here's how to blend spring cleaning with decor to rejuvenate your home.

Fresh Flowers & Decluttering Spaces

Rattan furniture can be quite pricey due to its natural origin and the craftsmanship involved in creating each unique piece. If budget constraints are preventing you from buying wicker furniture, explore rattan accessories such as

lampshades, wall clocks, table lamps, wall mirrors, coasters, laundry baskets, planters, and tissue boxes. The key here is to blend rattan with other materials to make your rattan pieces stand out from the rest.

Seasonal Centrepieces & Creative Reuse

Creating seasonal centrepieces can be an opportunity for a creative spring cleaning project. Gather items around your home that aren't in use, such as colourful plates, unused candles, or even natural elements like stones and branches, and incorporate them into your arrangements. This approach not only declutters your space but also recycles and repurposes items,

reducing waste and adding a personal touch to your decor. By intertwining spring cleaning with the introduction of spring decor, you achieve a home that looks refreshed and vibrant for the season and feels organized, clean and rejuvenated. bedroom and closet space. Use vacuum-sealed bags to store winter fabrics, saving space and keeping them fresh for the next season.

Bright Accents & Organizational Hacks

As you introduce bright accents and floral patterns into your decor, use this opportunity to organize and refresh your storage solutions. Colorful baskets and bins can serve dual purposes: they brighten your space and help categorize

and conceal everyday items, reducing clutter. Sheer curtains in spring hues not only let in more light but also motivate you to clean windows and frames, enhancing your rooms' overall brightness and airiness.

Q: How did you meet?

We first realized that each other existed when the groom had a business meeting with the bride's mom. From there, we ended up bumping into each other at a couple of social events, and the second we started talking, we couldn't stop!

Q: What do you love the most about one another?

Shyam: Her infectious smile and laugh are the first things that come to mind. For me, she lights up every room she's in with her incredible energy! She's very social, and I am more of an introvert, so she helps me get out of my shell!

Kirti: What I love most about Shyam is that he has this beautiful heart filled with so much love and respect for anyone he holds dear to him! He always knows how to make me laugh, accepts me for who I am, and helps me grow and become even better! I feel safe and comforted knowing I have him around!

Q: Could you share your proposal story?

Shyam had booked an impromptu trip for us to Mexico, and a couple of days into the trip, he mentioned that we would go for a fancy dinner at the resort! Before the dinner, he suggested that we go to the beach first since it was something we both wanted to do since we arrived! While on the beach, a photographer approached us and asked if we wanted to do a free photoshoot. I looked at Shyam with excitement, and he reluctantly said yes. Little did I know that the photoshoot was set up for us to capture our big moment!

The photographer began; he told me to look at the ocean as Shyam got ready and kneeled behind me! The photographer then asked me to turn around, and I was shocked and overwhelmed with so much happiness that I started to cry! He wouldn't want me to say this, but he could not speak as he was down on one knee and was too emotional! This day will forever be etched in my mind! I obviously said yes!

Shyam: When Kirti arrived in the doli carried by her brothers, it was the most royal entrance, and she looked nothing short of a princess! Seeing her walking towards me made me feel like all the sacrifices and stress of wedding planning were worth it!

Kirti: My favourite moment was when I was walking down the aisle. I was first overwhelmed with emotion and could not look up, but when I finally did and saw Shyam's face, I could clearly see my future filled with so much love! I wanted to be that coy-looking bride, but I couldn't help but smile!

2024 NISSAN 400Z

SUCCESSFUL REINTERPRETATION OF A CLASSIC

Saying auto enthusiasts had anticipated last year's arrival of the seventh-generation Nissan Z would be an understatement. A significant upgrade over the outgoing 370Z — with which the 400Z still shares a chassis — the model does the badge justice.

Z is the pure expression of Thrill. It is Nissan's passion wrapped up on four wheels," says Ashwani Gupta, Nissan Motor Company COO, in a media release. "The new Z retains its authenticity as a pure sports car to keep you connected to the road while bringing in the latest modern technologies to ensure the car can help keep you connected to your life."

Throwing back to the classic long hood and fastback design of the original, the vehicle incorporates contemporary elements like the teardrop-shaped LED headlights, hidden door handles and flush-mounted rear LED taillight panel. The front fascia also wears a larger remix of the heritage squared-off grille, contrasting against the rest of the curvy body, that polarized the Internet when images were first shown.

DARPAN's Performance trim press loaner was sprayed in the bright Ikazuchi Yellow and Super Black two-tone colour scheme and this Z turned heads everywhere it went on the road. The black Rays 19-inch forged wheels wrapped in sticky Bridgestone Potenza S007 rubber certainly add to the wow factor—one gentleman crossing the street looked over it no less than five times.

2024 RANGE ROVER SPORT P400

LUXURIOUS UTILITY

In two decades, Range Rover has turned one of the market's boxiest SUVs into one of the sleekest in the Sport. The current model looks amazing and solidifies its position as one of the plushest, most comfortable and capable offerings in the segment.

“"The exceptional new Range Rover Sport sets new standards as the ultimate sporting luxury SUV, building on seventeen years of unique customer appeal. It is the latest embodiment of our vision to create the world's most desirable modern luxury vehicles, effortlessly blending new levels of sustainability with the signature qualities that have made Range Rover Sport so popular," says Thierry Bolloré, Jaguar Land Rover CEO in a press release.

Called reductive design, the current styling language has reduced the Digital LED headlamps and slim grille to a near sliver running across the front. Below, wide dual air intakes sandwich a section of body-colour bumper together, providing a very distinctive appearance. At the rear, horizontal taillights and a black panel adorned with the brand script echo the nose. The blacked-out, sloped greenhouse and rear diffuser housing twin tailpipes add some additional visual flair.

Similarly minimalistic, Inside, everything is ergonomic and beautifully laid out. The seats are among the cushiest available in the industry, and consumers may choose between standard or semi-aniline leather upholstery or go for the Perforated Ultrafabrics vegan option that feels remarkably premium. Fancy a cold beverage on the go? A chiller in the centre console is deep enough to fit a two-litre carton of milk, as I discovered after a trip to the grocery store.

2024 Rivian R1T

ELECTRIC PICKUP PIONEER

Rivian is a verified trailblazer in the auto industry. It was the first manufacturer to produce a zero-emission pickup for the consumer market. Headquartered in California with tech offices here in Vancouver, its first foray into the space is notable.

The R1T is offered alongside the R1S SUV, identical to the B-pillar forwards. The truck truly manages to stand out on the road, boasting unique oval LED headlamps connected to a horizontal light bar. The rounded elements of the nose contrast against the rest of the body’s rectangular shape. Thick protective cladding runs all around the bottom of the vehicle, and at the rear, there’s a complementary wrap-around taillamp bar. A pair of polished tow hooks integrated into the front bumper above the matching skidplate.

One of the biggest attractions is the Gear Tunnel, a massive 328-litre storage compartment behind the rear doors. Accessed via two motorized panels on either side, when both are lowered, you can see clear through, making this a great place to stash skis, snowboards, or any other long and awkwardly shaped items.

Operating the Rivian requires a fresh approach, particularly for those without EV experience. Virtually all functions are handled through the 15.6inch central touchscreen. I sat puzzled in the driver’s seat before realizing that changing the side mirror position required first tapping on the user account menu button and then using the steering wheel thumb control to perform the actual adjustment.

Buyers can equip up to 22-inch wheels — our Quad-Motor loaner rode on 20-inch AllTerrain Dark split five-spoke alloys shod in rugged Pirelli Scorpion rubber, part of the All-Terrain Upgrade also bundling underbody protection and matching spare tire (+ $5,800).

The minimalistic interior combines leading tech and a sustainable, attractive aesthetic. The seats are comfortable and upholstered in easy-to-clean and visually interesting faux leather. The microfiber headliner overhead is made out of 100 percent recycled materials and feels upscale.

Occupants won’t be left wanting for comfort and convenience. The front seats can fold virtually flat to facilitate catching Zs when parked, and all rows have sufficient legroom. The bed volume is 828 litres, 311 litres in the frunk, and the aforementioned 328 litres in the gear tunnel.

a Pet Comfort mode that maintains a comfortable temperature inside. At the same time, the people have stepped away, and a special message pops up on the main display, assuring onlookers all is well.

Currently, the R1T is offered in either Quad or Dual Motor AWD flavours and, new for 2024, with four different battery sizes (note that the automaker has removed the grade-topping Max Pack option for the former powertrain, and whether it returns remains to be seen). As mentioned above, Darpan was given the opportunity to try the Quad AWD, which outputs a mighty impressive 835 horsepower and 908 lb-t of torque.

The accompanying 135-kilowatt-hour Large Pack battery allows the approximately 7,000-pound behemoth to travel over 500 kilometres on a full charge. Using a Rivian Level 2 48-amp charging station at home, expect a full top-up to take around 12 hours. Plugging into a high-output 350-kilowatt Level 3 public source should get the reserves from 10 to 80 percent in the neighbourhood of 40 to 45 minutes.

Considering the gargantuan performance lurking beneath the bodywork, the vehicle behaves remarkably tamely until the go pedal is pressed to the floor. There are multiple dynamic modes that alter throttle response, suspension height and dampening, drivetrain layout, and more. In town running errands? Conserve switches to front-wheel drive mode and hunkers the stance down for better aerodynamics and overall efficiency. Hitting the trail? Off-Road Rock Crawl is capable of independently sending torque to each corner to maximize grip.

Given its large dimensions, handling is sharper than expected, thanks to a slick hydraulic roll control replacing a conventional mechanical anti-roll bar. And when you do utilize a heavy foot, hold on to your hats. Blistering is the only appropriate adjective to describe the acceleration feel. Q&A

Q1. What is Cadillac's vision regarding electric vehicles, and what challenges do you currently face in this area?

Leigh Heppner: Cadillac has an ambitious plan to transition to an all-electric lineup of vehicles in the future, and we are right at the forefront of that transition as we speak. Cadillac still has an outstanding lineup of internal combustion engine vehicles that we will be selling alongside electric options in the coming years, but we are seeing planned launches of electric vehicles scheduled at an incredible pace. As you may know, Cadillac has recently launched the allnew Cadillac LYRIQ, and in the next 1-2 years, we will see the new electric Cadillac Escalade iQ, Cadillac OPTIQ, Cadillac VISTIQ and, of course, the fully bespoke flagship Cadillac CELESTIQ sedan. We are fortunate that in Greater Vancouver, we have tremendous EV adoption, and the demand for upcoming electric vehicles is very high. You could say our largest challenge is simply that our full electric lineup hasn't quite arrived yet.

General Manager at Preston Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac Ltd. with Leigh Heppner

Q2. In your daily interactions with customers, how would you describe the level of interest in electric vehicles, especially considering the current challenges in that market?

Leigh Heppner: The interest in electric vehicles remains quite high. The recent challenges in the market, whether it be inflation, interest rates, or even just uncertainty, have made some consumers pause large purchases. Still, the interest in electric vehicles has remained strong. The truth is that more consumers than ever are taking a hard look at their budget, and with the high fuel cost, EVs have started to look even more appealing. The other reality is that some of the most exciting and interesting models in the marketplace are now electric. In the short-term, there would always be a place for internal combustion powered or hybrid vehicles, but the industry's momentum has shifted towards and remains primarily with fully electric.

Q3. How did you handle inventory challenges during the pandemic? As we look forward to 2024, what outlook

does Preston Cadillac Dealership have for the year?

Leigh Heppner: The inventory challenges of the last few years were unprecedented, and the challenge was compounded for us by having some pretty incredible product launches. For example, when it debuted, the demand for the re-designed Cadillac Escalade was higher than we've ever seen. It

DARPAN AUTO REVIEW

created a very difficult situation when coupled with low supply due to inventory/supplier challenges. We've had many customers start custom-ordering their vehicles rather than purchasing from our in-stock inventory and being more patient when getting a vehicle. With that being said, many of our supply issues have been resolved, and we are feeling highly optimistic about 2024. We have quite a large in-stock inventory of many popular models, and despite some challenging economic circumstances in the world, there is still a great demand for Cadillac. With the help of the all-new Cadillac LYRIQ, we're expecting to see one of our strongest years ever for Cadillac sales.

Q4. For individuals considering a car purchase, what key factors should they consider, and can you highlight Preston's most popular car?

Leigh Heppner: The best piece of advice I can give anybody purchasing a new vehicle is to think about what you might want out of your car 2-3 years into the future, as opposed to simply considering what you need right now. Give some thought as to how your lifestyle might change. Are you thinking of starting a family? Buying a dog? Moving further away from work? These are the types of considerations to make when choosing your next vehicle's size, fuel economy, whether or not it should be an EV, etc. As for our most popular car? For Cadillac, at the moment, it's the LYRIQ. It's a perfectly sized 5-passenger SUV that has one of the smoothest and most luxurious rides of any vehicle I've driven, bar none. And it just so happens to be electric!

Q5. We've been hearing a lot about the Cadillac Lyriq All-Wheel Drive. Could you discuss some of its features, price points, etc?

Leigh Heppner: The Cadillac LYRIQ is one of our most sought-after vehicles. With All-Wheel Drive, it starts at just under $70,000, or about $73,000. It has an estimated range of up to 505 km and up to 500 horsepower. It has a remarkably smooth but sporty and performance-oriented ride and all of the latest technology, such as Google built-in, a 19-speaker AKG Audio System, Super Cruise, and much more. There's too much to list!

I decided to move to Canada because it is a land of opportunities and felt like a home away from home with the multitude of "knowns" it houses. It's a country that neither judges nor confines but teaches you that hard work is the only secret sauce to success, and I am a hustler.

Which year did you migrate?

I immigrated to Canada last year in 2023

What were your first impressions of Canada?

Always thought that the country was a wild mix of moose, maple, and manners! The climate is freezing, and the people are much warmer, and plaid is typically the national dress code.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place? I consider myself fortunate enough to find my home at and in my "best half" here. So, yes, at my family's.

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

As strange as it may sound, the serenity and the space the country offers, both literally and figuratively, can get to you initially. Coming from a bustling city like Mumbai, I often missed the "crowd" and the noise and sometimes even hesitated to leave home after sunset.

Homesickness is part of the process;

one can never get over it. Also, the time difference poses enough rifts between you and your loved ones (but hey, my folks have been the most understanding bunch I could have ever asked for!).

Not to forget, that the job search requires you to be relentless and resilient. Also, I am still wrapping my head around public transport here because boy, navigating directions is not as easy as it sounds.

Pro-tip – refrain from converting bills into your home currency to live comfortably

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

The job market in Canada is not the easiest. Although I did land some freelancing gigs and it did help me get by (not to forget I had someone to fall back on here), the job market is very saturated at the moment and you have to be patient, thick-skinned and steel-strong until you score a decent opportunity.

What do you like and dislike most about this country?

The work-life balance that the country offers is refreshing to see. It leaves you with enough time for yourself and your dear ones.

The tax structure could be better. Also, digital adoption here has a long way to go.

What do you like most about this country?

My future is a story of grit and gratitude. I see myself contributing to the Sales, Marketing and Communications industry, adding my skills to the brand-building mosaic. I envision my journey as a speedy immigrant, expediting my financial and personal journey while leveraging my experience to foster communities around me.

How has your overall journey in Canada been so far

It has been a rollercoaster of adaptation, unlearn-

ing and relearning, self-realization and discovery. From the initial excitement of new beginnings to navigating the intricacies of Canadian culture, every day brings a new lesson. The diversity, inclusivity, and genuine warmth of the people have made the challenges worthwhile. It's not just a physical relocation but a path of self-growth and building connections in this vast and welcoming land. Overall, it's been an enriching experience that unfolds, shapes, and strengthens with each passing day.

Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada: Overcoming the barrier of unfamiliarity and the self-induced sense of inexperience can sometimes take a toll on you. Also, building a sense of community required me to step out of my comfort zone. But like they say, well begun is half done!

Also, it's a competitive environment, and breaking into the job market requires continuous selfimprovement, networking, and perseverance.

Advice for immigrants:

Embrace the journey while you focus on the goal. This is your time to live free, live strong and make the journey count. Also, don't compare yourself to anyone because every script is unique. Shoot your shot, trust the almighty and don't give up even if it feels tiring.

Know that your family and friends will always have your back. Lastly, you will find many more wonderful people than you actually thought existed (network, network, network!). Make friends, value people, and above all, love yourself – because no one can handle you better than yourself.
