Customers selecting their build also have access to premium leather-free upholstery options such as Charcoal Fusion Microtech (similar to suede) and textile, as well as Wool blend in a luxe light grey shade. The latter includes the sparkling hand-made crystal shifter courtesy of Swedish glassworks Orrefors. Decorating the dash and door cards is the standard Topography inlay resembling a map.

Measuring 4,425 millimetres long, 1,873 wide and 1,651 tall, the compact size of the XC40 makes it a great urban runabout that still has usable back seats, a 31-litre-capacity frunk and 452 litres of space behind the second row — enough for two carry-on suitcases and a couple of duffle bags. Folding the rear seatbacks down opens up 1,328 litres. The folding floor can flip up to keep shopping bags secure and reveals a hidden lockable storage compartment to stash valuables.

The powertrain has no changes; the small all-wheel drive SUV is still propelled by twin electric motors making a net 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque. Straight-line performance is impressive: going from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.9 seconds. The MacPherson strut front and independent rear suspension soaks up bumps encountered on everyday drives yet is firm enough to prevent body roll when cornering too enthusiastically.

The 78-kilowatt-hour battery yields an official maximum travel distance of approximately 359 kilometres on a full charge, though this figure is optimistic, particularly in the winter with all the gadgets turned on. It’s worth noting that the base Core model doesn’t have a heat pump, so the cabin warming is done us- ing electricity, cutting down on range some. The Volvo XC40 Recharge is sold in three trims — Core, Plus and Ultimate — and starts at an MSRP of $59,950. Delivery times are variable, impacted by global semiconductor delays, and consumers are advised to contact their local retailer for an estimate.
