The standard of care is to intervene within 90 minutes. When a patient presents to Surrey Memorial with a heart attack, transferring them to a better-equipped hospital delays intervention which could have deadly consequences.” - Dr. Randeep Gill Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for Surrey Hospitals Foundation ome to over 600,000 people, Surrey is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Lower Mainland, with its population increasing by almost 10 percent every year. Compared to other cities, Surrey is far more welcoming due to its affordability, diversity and economic opportunities, which makes it a hub for the immigrant population. Given this and the federal mandate to bring more workers into the country, Surrey is projected to become the most populous city in BC in the next two decades. However, this growth has strained the city’s healthcare system, leaving hospitals under-equipped to take care of its increasing population, a vital issue that needs to be addressed. As Surrey residents and the medical community reel under pressure to somehow manage its hospital needs, politicians and political parties play the blame game and offer solutions that are inadequate for the community’s growing needs. Dr. Randeep Gill, chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for Surrey Hospitals Foundation, shares his firsthand experience from the ER at Surrey Memorial Hospital, providing insights on what the city needs versus what it’s getting when it comes to an issue that directly impacts its residents’ survivability. Surrey Memorial Hospital, recognized as a regional hospital, provides specialized care to the ever-increasing population of Surrey and surrounding areas. The hospital’s Emergency Department is the busiest in the province and second busiest in the country and took care of a staggering 171,467 Surrey residents in 2022-23. On average, the hospital sees close to 600 patients a day. As it grapples with this overwhelming patient volume, the hospital struggles not just with the problems of overcrowding and understaffing, which is the bane of the healthcare sector in the current times, but also a lack of infrastructure when it comes to specialized care. As a result, close to 1400 critically-ill patients had to be transferred to other hospitals north of the Fraser River for life-saving interventions in 2021 alone. In February this year, the Surrey Board of Trade released a report titled “Surrey’s Hospital Needs,” highlighting the lack of hospital infrastructure in Surrey. The report underscored that Surrey is the only large city in Canada that lacks the necessary facilities to treat three leading causes of death: heart attacks, strokes, and trauma. Dr. Gill, who has been advocating for a change in the situation, understands that Surrey residents deserve more and that the government is not adhering to the standard of care south of the Fraser. “Surrey is the second largest city in BC with a high incidence of heart attack, stroke, and trauma—so, why is there no plan to bring life-saving resources to the community?” he asks. According to Gill, every major city in Canada has hub for addressing the leading causes of death. However, despite being situated in one of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the country, Surrey Memorial Hospital does not have the necessary infrastructure to intervene when it comes to these causes of death. The hospital’s cardiac department can manage heart failure or deal with patients with heart infections, but it’s not equipped to perform surgeries like valve replacement or vessel opening. Gill states, “The standard of care is to intervene within 90 minutes. When a patient presents to Surrey Memorial with a heart attack, transferring them to a better-equipped hospital delays intervention which could have deadly consequences.” Dr. Courtney Young, Head of the Cardiology Department at Surrey “ PICTURE COURTESY: ED WHITE PHOTOGRAPHICS COURTESY CEL ARCHITECTURE AND PARKIN ARCHITECTS COVER STORY

What is the RCMP's assessment of the overall security situation in public spaces following incidents like the Hardeep Singh Nijjar shooting? Do you consider it a failure on the part of the police and other authorities? Anytime there is an act of violence such as a shooting or a homicide, it is understandably concerning for residents. The homicide of Hardeep Singh Nijjar occurred outside a place of worship where community members were present outside the Gurdwara.

Our public spaces are safe spaces. Residents demand and deserve to feel safe where they live, go to school or where they worship.

Notwithstanding this terrible incident, only a small fraction of our calls for service involve a violent act in a public space. It’s important to keep these isolated acts of violence within the context of the overall public safety picture in Surrey where violent crime has decreased for over a decade.

Can you provide insights into the investigation process and progress regarding the Hardeep Singh Nijjar shooting and other similar incidents?

The investigation into Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death is being led by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). When a homicide occurs, an IHIT team responds and works directly with the Surrey RCMP. Homicide investigations are complex, and they can take time to solve. Investigators in IHIT are incredibly experienced officers who are fully tasked with this matter and seeking justice for the victim, his family and this community.

The recent shootings in Surrey certainly create fear in the community. How can Surrey residents be assured of their safety?

Whenever a shooting occurs, it is and should be concerning to the community. As a parent, I have the same fears and aspirations as all parents, to provide a safe place to raise a family. So I share those feelings.

Sadly, we do see violence in all communities in Canada. But it is important to balance the perception of crime with the actual statistics and context of the overall public safety picture. Crime has fallen in Surrey for over 10 years.

Residents can feel safe because they are a massive part of the solution. Being involved in the community, staying engaged with their children and schools, participating in neighbourhood events, and reporting crimes to police – is how we all work together towards a safe and healthy community.

What strategies/ additional measures/ resources is the RCMP considering to deter such shootings and enhance public safety?

We use a number of strategies to enhance public safety and deter crime including our immediate response to community safety concerns, and our long-term strategy to address root causes of crime.

In regards to violent crimes like shootings or gang

activity, we use a dual strategy of enforcement combined with prevention and education, working with our partners, to deter youth from becoming involved in crime.

With the policing transition between Surrey RCMP and Surrey Police Service, which law enforcement agency will respond to a crime scene if a resident calls 911?

The Surrey RCMP remains in command of policing within Surrey but RCMP and SPS officers have worked together in the detachment and have done so with great professionalism.

When the public calls for police service in Surrey, they may see an officer from the Surrey RCMP or the Surrey Police Service (or both) arrive to assist them.

How can you assure residents that the highest standards of investigation practices

will be maintained when dealing with a crime scene through the policing transition between Surrey Police Service and Surrey RCMP?

Ensuring public safety and maintaining the integrity of investigations has been and will continue to be my top priority as the OIC. At this point, all RCMP processes and procedures continue to be followed to ensure there are no investigative gaps.

If Transition were to proceed, processes will be developed to make the shift to SPS.

What do you make of Surrey Council's decision to retain the Surrey RCMP in Surrey?

The RCMP has policed Surrey since 1951. We are extremely proud to serve this community and are thrilled to remain in place.

My main priority as OIC remains the same, to ensure public and police officer safety, and deliver excellent, community-focused policing in Surrey.

Taxpayers' money is at stake with this backand-forth between Surrey RCMP and Surrey Police Service. It has cost taxpayers $8M a month since Council took a vote in November, which is close to 60M dollars, which is how much a brand new Rec Centre would cost the City. How do you address this with the taxpayers?

The decisions over the policing transition and costs related to the transition is not within my purview; however, I recognize that policing costs are a significant portion of every City budget.

I take financial accountability very seriously. Multiple reports indicate that the Surrey RCMP operate in a fiscally responsible manner and are more affordable than a municipal policing alternative by 30-40 million per year. As such, I firmly believe that Surrey tax payers are receiving effective, efficient and affordable policing.

If the Surrey Police Service gets the go-ahead for the City of Surrey, where will the majority of the Surrey RCMP officers be heading?

If the transition to SPS were to continue, the RCMP would seek to retain every RCMP officer and would work with them individually to find a position and location that would meet their career objectives and their family situation.

What message would you like to share with the South Asian community?

The South Asian community has deep and generational roots in policing and the military and, as such, we appreciate the continued support we receive day in and day out.

I think this is reflected in the transformation of this detachment since 1951 to be representative of this community. Surrey residents have supported their sons, daughters and family members to join the RCMP so that our newest intake of 6 RCMP Cadets in the next weeks are 80% of South Asian descent!

My message – thank you for the trust.

Empowering Girls through Sports and Leadership:

ASHLYEN SINGH

In April 2023, Ashlyen Singh won the BC School Sports Women in Sports & Leadership Award, recognizing their commitment to student-athletes and school sports.

As someone who benefited significantly from sports, it's been their endeavour to ensure that all children have access to high-quality sports. Considering sports played a pivotal role in building their confidence and leadership skills, instilling a greater sense of discipline, and enhancing problem-solving skills, they aspire to share it with other children, which is why as the girls' basketball program lead and head coach for the Grade IX basketball team at Rick Hansen Secondary, they are always encouraging girls to play sports as a means to come into their power.

"As a coach, my constant focus is motivating my team and fostering a challenging environment. We celebrate our triumphs together when the team willingly embraces risks and succeeds. However, in the face of failure, I ask them, 'How can I support you?' It helps cultivate resilience and hones their problem-solving abilities," Ashlyen shared.

This approach led their team to compete and finish fifth place provincially, their best so far. However, Ashlyen had to unlearn and let go of their past conditioning as they had predominantly experienced coaching that prioritized winning over athletes' well-being. Over time, Ashlyen shifted to a style where they weren't merely focusing on winning but helping children in the team become stable, mentally healthy athletes.

Besides teaching at school, Ashlyen also runs Abbotsford Basketball Association (ABA), a non-profit organization they co-founded with their partner, Dylan Kular, to make basketball and quality programming accessible to children at an affordable price. If the average cost of participating in a two-week program were $130, ABA would charge around $90 for a ten-week program.

Ashlyen's experience as a female basketball coach has proven rewarding and enlightening. Initially unaware of the bias against female coaches, they quickly started recognizing it. It became evident to Ashlyen early on that their coaching skills alone were not enough, as parents of the children they coached frequently failed to acknowledge their presence. "Parents would often think that there was no coach present if there wasn't a male in the gym," they revealed. Even the children would sometimes take a while to warm up to Ashlyen, possibly because they were unaccustomed to seeing women in leadership positions.

Recently, Ashlyen completed their Master's in Educational Leadership and Mentorship from the University of the Fraser Valley. They look forward to doing something big for girls' sports and leadership in Abbotsford. "One of my plans is to start basketball camps for elementary and middle school girls and have high school girls help run it, which will provide the latter with transferable leadership opportunities and allow the younger ones to see themselves in such roles in the future," they shared.

Ashlyen's message to everyone in the South Asian community is to put girls in sports and keep them playing for as long as possible.

DARPAN SPOTLIGHT

Style consultant, influencer, and model Tejeshwar Singh is often recognized as the first turbaned Sikh to be featured in many of the spaces he works in. Otherwise, a full-time project manager with a background in civil engineering, this international superstar is simultaneously blowing up on social media and collaborating with renowned brands like H&M, UNIQLO, Harry Rosen, and Reebok. As he steps forward, stereotypes are being shattered, signalling a positive shift in the fashion industry.

Since childhood, Singh exhibited a keen interest in fashion, passionately selecting his clothes, with his father often capturing his oomph-factor moments through photographs. Singh attributes his knack for dressing to his paternal grandfather, a military man who personified the importance of presenting oneself in a well-groomed manner.

Recalling his teenage years, Singh shares experiences of being bullied for changes in his facial hair growth. However, Singh made a personal choice not to trim his beard and learned how to maintain and style it. He connects his kundiya mucha to the concept of chardi kala, or high spirits. The proud Sikh embodies the sentiment that one can truly maintain their identity without compromising on personal choices, such as unshorn hair. When it comes to maintaining beard health, Singh's advice is to be patient, avoid artificial products, and go the natural way.

Singh with Style : Tejeshwar Singh

Over the years, as Singh has become more acquainted with editing and social media, he has started gaining popularity online, realizing that he can utilize his platform to inspire others. "Contrary to what some may assume, content creation is not an easy task and requires hard work, whether it's a 10-second or a 10-minute video. My focus is on the message behind my ideas, and I genuinely value the impact of my work. I'm happy even if only a few people watch my content and learn something meaningful, rather than chasing thousands of views.", shares Singh.

Rather than blindly imitating someone else's style choices, the stylist emphasizes considering three factors when dressing: occasion, weather, and personal comfort. His advice entails making thoughtful purchases based on personal needs and investing in versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Moreover, by not succumbing to impulse buying, a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly fashion industry can prevail.

Singh's style tips for the summer include:

• Wear light and breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, silk, and seersucker.

• Go for looser fits, like straight or regular fit, instead of skinny or fitted.

• Incorporate colour.

• Skip the shoes and choose sandals.

• Take the bold route and add prints through shirts, silk scarves, pants, socks, or accessories.

• Don't be afraid or insecure about showing off some skin, for example, shorts.

• Accessorize with sunglasses and a nice watch, but don't overdo it. The last thing you want on a hot, sunny day is a bunch of metal chains clinging to your neck.

Moving forward, as cultures evolve, fashion trends are also undergoing transformations. However, Singh highlights the importance of balancing cultural heritage, fashion, and personal style, as he maintains a harmonious blend of cultural identity and contemporary style. Undoubtedly, with his distinct appearance and admirable personality, the sky's the limit for all that Singh can achieve. As the man himself puts it, "It is one thing to be recognized among thousands of people, but another to be recognized among thousands of sardars!"

1. How does it feel to release a music video in 2023? What did you think was different from releasing a music video in the 2000s?

The first thing is, I had to pay for it myself. That changes a lot; secondly, as an artist, it's hard to know when to stop editing and fixing. I suppose it's when the money runs out.

2. What was the biggest challenge of releasing a music video now?

I'm 20 years older than when I first started, and with that experience and knowledge comes some physical aging as well. The idea that folks can openly comment, good or bad or cruel, on anything they think about you is challenging. I'm lucky that 95% of the comments are positive, but the anxiety that they may not be is a real thing an artist has to be ready to face. You need a rhinoceros' hide, not thick skin these days.

Mathur

Raghav Mathur, the talented Indo-Canadian singer, has again taken the music world by storm. Whether you label it a 'comeback' hit or a 'flashback' track, one thing is clear - he knows how to make groovy hits and this time, his song is dominating the 'Gram and spreading its catchy rhythms far and wide. Adorned with vibrant shades of red and black, Desperado pays a heartfelt tribute to Raghav Mathur's debut album, Storyteller. Having Tesher be a part of the song is just a bonus. In an interview with DARPAN, Raghav talks about the challenges of releasing a song in 2023, changes in the music landscape, and more.

3. Do you think you had to adapt to changing times?

In some ways, sure, but more importantly, I just had to find myself again; that took time. Sometimes in the quest for adaptability, many artists lose their individuality. An artist must be self-aware and know exactly what works for them. You've got to have fun first and then let the world enjoy with you!

4. How do you keep yourself updated with the changing music landscape?

I just listen and love what I love; thinking beyond that is dangerous for the musical soul.

5. The fans were eagerly waiting for music from you. Why did you take a gap before you published your last?

I did take some time off, but I also didn't, if that makes sense. Also, my priorities were different in the last few years, and I was better off living that journey. Then, over Covid,

I saw people's love for my works, and it touched my heart and helped me focus on what the new sound should be... it's like it all became clear.

6. Bollywood music has also changed 360 degrees. What is your opinion on that?

It will always change. I am excited about what is to come for the Indian film industry. We are headed to a place where merit prevails over everything.

7. Where do you think independent music stands in the music world? Is it as popular as it was in the 90s?

It's maybe more influential now than ever because of the access social media gives the fan to the artist. It's exciting and scares a lot of the old guard in the entertainment world because, again, there's no formula.. just the love of it.

8. As a global music icon, how has your life changed?

I am one of the luckiest people in the world. I've never had to do anything else to earn other than make music and perform it. The industry has gone through almost unprecedented changes since my career started, and I've had some big ups and some down times, but I feel more centred than ever before. Some of that, frankly, is being a dad.. as an artist, our lives can take up a lot of space. My daughter Riya is, without a doubt, the North Star for everything I do now, and it's made me a happier and better person.

9. How did you select Chura Liya for Desperado and think of merging the two? Did you choose the songs to make this one a mass hit?

That was all Mushtaq. He chose the sample, and to be honest, at first, I wasn't so sure, but he was right... and I thank him for it.

10. As someone who received a lot of love early on in your career, how do you reflect on your success?

With gratitude, humility, love and the assurance that the best is yet to come!

The debate surrounding drug overdose education in schools has sparked controversy and divided opinions across the Lower Mainland. While advocates argue that providing comprehensive education about drug overdoses can empower students with life-saving knowledge and help them make informed decisions, opponents express concerns that discussing drug overdose education in schools may inadvertently normalize or encourage drug use among students. Nevertheless, the topic underscores the need for careful consideration to ensure that drug overdose education in schools strikes a balance between providing crucial information and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.

Social Justice Teacher and Anti-Oppression and Equity Curriculum Specialist, Annie Ohana sheds light on the importance of addressing this issue and the need for comprehensive education. She points out that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, substance abuse training was already in place, as many students were directly or indirectly affected by drug use. As the BCTF Facilitator for Social Justice, she underscores the significance of open forums and community-focused harm reduction strategies in tackling related social issues such as the opioid epidemic.

Drawing from her experiences in the classroom, Ohana recalls, “When we

started these discussions, a male South Asian student said to me, ‘Even if we don’t talk about this, we are going to do it anyway’. When parents and teachers try to simply say things like ‘don’t use’, ‘you’re a bad person’, ‘you’re a failure’, or ‘you’re weak’, the stigmatization repels children from talking to an adult. When we open the door to dialogue, I don’t think we are teaching loopholes or revealing the secret to using. Students themselves tell me they want discussions.”

Highlighting the positive impact of previous efforts to provide training in collaboration with the police, Ohana believes that avoiding discussions about drug use and stigmatizing students who engage in it only hinders communication and support. Instead, fostering dialogue, understanding, and offering guidance can lead to better outcomes. At the same time, the passionate educator advocates for age-appropriate discussions, involving assigned counselors and substance counseling programs for senior students, to address their substance issues.

Grade 11 student Harnoor Mand shines her perspective, pointing out that the education surrounding drug overdose can be useful. She details, “It’s important for people to know how to handle emergency situations like drug overdoses. It can prevent incidents and

save lives since you would understand the symptoms. I also think this should be taught in high schools by showing videos or a short presentation.”

From an administrative standpoint, the Vancouver School Board elaborates that it does not provide education specifically on drug overdose, but does provide education on substance use prevention. “In a society where substance use is prevalent, the Vancouver School Board considers it important to inform and educate youth so they are aware of the risk factors and prevention strategies that are relevant and realistic.” shares Vancouver School Board Communications. Ultimately, as identified in the education plan, the Vancouver School Board is committed to improving student mental and physical well-being.

Elenore Sturko, Shadow Minister for Mental Health, Addiction, Recovery and Education adds, “Youth drug toxicity deaths are now the leading cause of unnatural death for children under nineteen. It’s time to finally prioritize a comprehensive mental health and addictions system, including harm reduction measures, which act in the best interest of youth to ensure that children and their families have the tools they need. From focusing on early prevention through education and ensuring access to free,

on-demand treatment and resources when needed, an essential systemic overhaul is required to effectively save lives.”

Despite established educational programs and governmental plans, parents are worried. With one child already having graduated high school and one child currently attending high school, Navjot Kaur Phull shares her personal experiences. She expresses reservations about the approach taken in schools, feeling that it may inadvertently condone drug use by specifying acceptable limits. Phull questions, “How can we ensure that children will stop where they are supposed to and not exceed those boundaries?” She notes that schools may serve as distribution centers and that teachers may not be sufficiently prioritizing this matter, stressing the importance of changing the system for the sake of children's future.

Phull further expresses the desire for schools to actively address and eliminate this issue, suggesting that teachers should inform parents if they suspect a child's involvement in drugs since parents may not have access to necessary information due to work commitments. Outside of school, Phull believes that parents should also be considerate and involved in educating their children about the risks and consequences of drug use. “We need education and vigilance at home. We need to caution our kids against consuming anything outside of known sources, even within school settings. Talk to your children!”

Overall, the controversy surrounding drug overdose education in schools reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of addressing substance abuse among students. While some argue that comprehensive education and harm reduction strategies are necessary to empower students with knowledge and resources, others express concerns about unintended consequences and the role of parents in guiding their children's behavior. Finding a balanced approach that takes into account the safety, well-being, and age-appropriateness of drug education programs is crucial. By fostering understanding, providing accurate information, and promoting proactive measures, schools can play a vital role in preventing drug overdoses and supporting the overall health and well-being of students.

Revisiting Kamal Sharma's journey is like delving into history and witnessing the remarkable transformation and advancement of South Asian Entertainment in Vancouver. From a time when the community would willingly pay $10 to rent a pirated movie to get their fix of Bollywood entertainment to now when they have access to multiple streaming platforms, Kamal has seen the evolution and played a pivotal role in keeping the South Asian art and entertainment alive, connecting the immigrants living in Vancouver to their roots.

From being the first person to sell original Bollywood movie prints to hosting entertainment shows that garnered a cult following among ethnic communities to introducing concerts that brought legendary South Asian artists to Vancouver, Kamal has been a pioneer in shaping the South Asian cultural landscape and still has his eyes set on new frontiers as he brings the first ever Indian musical, Mughal-e-Azam, to the community.

Early Life

Son of an Indian diplomat, Kamal grew up in Old Delhi, near Novelty Cinema, one of India's oldest movie theatres. On his way back from school, he would invariably check out the current and upcoming movies at the theatre. He also enjoyed spending time reading and researching extensively about the Indian film industry.  Kamal moved to Vancouver in 1978 when his father got posted to the Indian Consulate here. He fondly reflects that despite being an avid reader and traveller, he had not heard of Vancouver until then. After relocating, Kamal joined computer programming at UBC. Alongside this, he started working with a travel company. In 1979, the owner's brother was venturing into the video business and asked him to join as a manager. This fascinated him as it resonated with his love for movies. And within a year, he got married, quit UBC, and started managing the video store, The Video King, full-time. The Video King was the first store to introduce original video prints in North America for Bollywood movies. Kamal has been a part of the entertainment business ever since.

Foray into the Entertainment Business

Kamal recalls his early days in Vancouver when there were only three places where one would find people from the South Asian community – the Gurudwara at Fraser and 11, grocery stores, and the third place that became a focal point was the video store. The latter became a major attraction where people, including prominent media personalities and community leaders, would spend hours discussing and exploring which movies to pick.

In 1983, when India won the cricket World Cup, Shushma Datt, the first Canadian broadcaster of South Asian descent who was one of the producers at the World View Channel, which catered to the ethnic communities, met Kamal at the video store and asked him to come and give his views on India's victory as he was a cricket enthusiast and also played for the Everest Cricket Club. Impressed with his speaking ability, one of the producers hired him on the spot to do sports news for the TV channel. However, since sports news was limited at that point, Kamal pitched a show called "Yaadien," where he would delve into the lives of famous yesteryear Bollywood personalities whose contributions remained etched in the minds of the community. Yaadein's first episode on Madhubala was a smashing success, and Kamal followed it with episodes on Meena Kumari, Guru Dutt and many more. This established him as a household name in the South Asian community, someone who helped

in connecting people to Bollywood back in India.

While Yaadein appealed to the older generation, there was also a strong demand for a show catering to the younger audience. To fill the gap, he came up with another show called "Kamal's Top 10", where he ranked and played the top 10 songs from the movies released in the month. This, too, became a huge hit, even bigger than Yaadein.

According to Kamal, most immigrants who came to Canada in those days were from small towns and villages and were too shy and scared to venture into the city. His zest to do something more for the community inspired him to do "Kamal's Top 10" from different locations in BC. "During those days, people from our community seemed confined to their homes, and I wanted to take them around and show them what BC had to offer, which resonated with them," he said. Since then, he has hosted this show from different parts of Canada, London, Hong Kong, and almost every major city in India, which made it famous across all ethnic communities.

From being a monthly show, it became a weekly show, with Roger airing it on the Multicultural Channel every Thursday evening. Though Kamal's life was hectic, he was thoroughly enjoying it. He worked at the video store until 9 pm and then went to the studio to do the recordings. Some of Kamal's most memorable interactions included interviewing Sunil Dutt, Pandit Jasraj, Manna Dey, and Shreya Ghoshal.

On December 1st, 1990, Kamal opened his video store on Victoria Drive, Kamal's Video Palace (KVP). Owing to

his popularity, he sold his entire inventory of 300 videos on the opening day and did a business worth $35,000. The store became a focal point for the community and attracted politicians, business leaders, and entertainment personalities alike. Jagjit Singh, Alka Yagnik, Ghulam Ali, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Abida Parveen, Jazzy B, Harbhajan Mann, Pankaj Udhas, Gurdas Mann, Manmohan Waris, Sangtar & Kamal Heer, Ustad Sultan Khan, Pandit Jasraj, and Kailash Kher were some of the Indian and Pakistani artists who visited KVP. "It became a ritual—if a film star or singer from the community was coming to Vancouver, they had to visit Kamal's Video Palace," he shared.

Kamal attributes KVP's popularity to the fact that it was the first fully computerized video store in the South Asian community. It was also one of the first few stores to start cataloging different CDs and DVDs under different genres, making it easier for people to browse the store, which others followed later. But more than anything else, Kamal's clientele trusted him because he would exclusively deal in original prints. These made KVP a high-density store that would remain busy until 9/10 at night. Owing to its high footfall, the store also sold various concert tickets.

In 1994, one of Kamal's clients suggested that he foray into the concert business, an idea that seemed like a natural next step and led to the inception of KVP Entertainers. The first artist KVP Entertainers brought to Vancouver was

Jagjit Singh, and it was a massive success, with the entire show sold out a month in advance. At this point, he also started a second store at the 92nd on Scott Road in Surrey, which was becoming a hub for the South Asian community. According to Kamal, other businesses in the area decided to extend their lease owing to the popularity of his store. He continued to operate from there until 2003 when he moved into his building at 82nd on Scott Road. "At a time when most people thought that 92nd was the most exciting location, I could envision that the real strength of Scott Road was in the middle, and it would be the growth center of Surrey. Now 82 to 84 is the most lucrative real estate area in Surrey," he shared.

Under KVP Entertainers, Kamal brought a number of artists for the first

time to Vancouver, including Hrithik Roshan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Roopkumar Rathod, Kailash Kher, Ustad Rashid Khan, Kabir Bedi, Kareena Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Mohit Chohan and legendary Reshma.

In 1997, for the 300th Anniversary of Khalsa, he called Daler Mehndi, the king of Punjabi pop whose music was popular and appealed to the masses. The concert was a huge success, and Vancouver Sun featured it on the front page of its entertainment section. Another of Kamal's memorable concerts was "Awesome Foursome" in 1998 at the Pacific Coliseum, bringing Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Juhi Chawla and Akshay

Kumar together. It differed from the other concerts as the venue offered a stage in the middle and a platform that ran around the circumference, allowing the actors to connect with the crowd.

Since then, Kamal has experimented with different genres – Bollywood, ghazals, folk, qawwali, classical vocal, classical instrumental, and theatre. He was one of the first to introduce Hindi theatre to the community bringing Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta and Rakesh Bedi with "Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha," which sold out completely and was a huge success. "This was the first time that the community got genuinely interested in theatre as they saw Bollywood artists coming and performing in these plays," he said. Later,

he also brought "Kaifi Aur Main," a play in which Javed Akhtar plays Kaifi Azmi and Shabana Azmi plays her mother, Shaukat Azmi, where both engage in a soulful exploration of Kaifi Azmi's most iconic songs with Jasvinder Singh and his musical ensemble bringing those songs to life.

One of Kamal's career highlights involves bringing the revered Gulzar Saab to Vancouver, a legendary poet, director, and lyricist whose work left a lasting impression on him. Having been part of the entertainment industry for over four decades, Kamal considers hosting the legendary Mahendra Kapoor his most memorable accomplishment. "When I learned that he's coming to Vancouver, I knew it had to be special, and I had to do something different. So, I approached the Center for Performing Arts in Vancouver, which has a proud history of hosting great productions. While they were initially reluctant, I managed to persuade them - and this became the first South Asian concert to be held at the venue," he shared.

Mahendra Kapoor was 70, a bit shaky then, but he insisted on entering from the back and walking through the audience towards the stage. Kamal said: "I remember being hesitant and reluctantly acquiescing to the request, but that was one of the best decisions I've made because, to date, it gives me goosebumps when I remember his entry, reciting, 'Jab zero diya mere Bharat ne, Bharat ne mere Bharat ne…. Hai preet jahan ki reet sada,

Main geet wahan ke gata hoon…,' and the entire hall erupted. He was terrific and the best performance I have seen in my entire concert career".

Looking Ahead

Now, with KVP Entertainers, Kamal is focusing solely on the concert business as he shut down Kamal's Video Palace during the pandemic. He also founded the KVP Heritage Society to encourage and promote Indian classical music. Kamal has hosted eight shows this year, starting with a Bhajan program at the Hindu temple with classical vocalists. In March, he hosted "The Legends" across five cities in Western Canada. The event drew inspiration from Jolly Mukherjee's vision and showcased Indian vocalists performing timeless melodies from renowned actors such as Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, and Rajinder Kumar. Recently, he also hosted Zakhir Husain and the Masters of Percussion.

Next, he's excited and eagerly waiting to bring the first-ever musical, Mughal-e-Azam, from India to Vancouver, a massive production with over 150 artists touring 14 cities across North America.

Impact

Doing something for the community has always been a priority for Kamal. In the late 70s, the community was growing, and most people were working from morning till late evening and sorely missed South Asian entertainment. At that point, Kamal became the first to bring original movie prints to Vancouver. However, as videos took over, the few Bollywood movie theatres also got shut. At this point, Kamal's radio and TV shows offered the community a much-needed source of entertainment, which they looked forward to. With concerts, Kamal has contributed to changing the perception of Vancouver, which was perceived as a city with one of the toughest crowds. The fact that his concerts have never had any issues helped tremendously in improving the overall impression of the city.

Last year, post covid, Kamal successfully hosted a concert with Arijit Singh that attracted over 10,000 people and set the trend for other organizers who later brought Diljit Dosanjh and AP Dhillon, hosting a crowd of over 20,000 people each.

In 2022, BC Achievement Foundation honoured Kamal with the Annual Community Award. He's proud that his passion for the entertainment industry has helped fill the gap that existed in the community, which he feels has grown immensely in the last decade. "I feel a sense of satisfaction that I have contributed to the community's growth and helped keep it entrenched to its roots," he shared.

In today's rapidly changing world, public safety has become an increasingly pressing concern for communities worldwide. Recent incidents, including the tragic shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar that unfolded in our city, have brought this issue to the forefront, sparking discussions and calls for action. As we grapple with the aftermath of such events, it is essential to delve deeper into the multifaceted nature of public safety, and explore the ever so urgent need for comprehensive strategies that address the root causes of violence while fostering a sense of security and resilience among individuals and communities alike.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General shares that the shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey is profoundly disturbing, “Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this crime. It’s particularly troubling that the shooting took place outside a place of worship, where people should be able to gather in safety with friends, family and community members. We understand that there is widespread grief and anxiety after this shooting. Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death is being investigated by the

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, and they are working with policing partners and communities to track down the parties responsible for this crime.” Responsible for delivering public safety services in British Columbia, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General expresses that any type of violence that endangers people in BC is unacceptable, assuring the public that the government is working on every front to make sure everyone feels safe in their communities. In fact, with support from the Federal government, approximately $100M is being invested to address gun and gang violence this year. In addition, the Province has approved an unprecedented, multi-year investment of approximately $230 million to the base funding for the RCMP to hire additional officers under the Safer Communities Action Plan. That includes hiring additional officers in specialized units, such as the major crimes section.

Member of Parliament for Surrey-Newton, Sukh Dhaliwal also echoes that every Canadian deserves to feel safe

in their neighborhoods and communities, including places of worship, “Canada is a country of diversity, peace, and inclusion. We cannot, and we will not, tolerate hate and violence. Following the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, I, along with several members of the Sikh Liberal Caucus, met with the Minister of Public Safety to highlight concerns raised by members of the public. Minister Marco Mendicino assured us that the government is working closely with law enforcement, to protect the Sikh community, and all Canadians.” Dhaliwal details that on June 28th, the Minister of Public Safety launched the 2023 Security Infrastructure Program, providing community institutions the resources they need to make safety improvements, as the program will fund up to 50% of the cost of security equipment, up to a maximum of $100,000 per project. Eligible recipients include com-

munity centers, educational institutions, places of worship and others. In May, the government announced an investment of $390 million through the Gun and Gang Violence Action Fund, including $54.7 million earmarked for British Columbia. Funding over the next five years will help provinces and territories with a variety of initiatives to combat gun and gang violence, including support for law enforcement and prevention programs. Moreover, this year, $3.95 million from the Building Safer Communities Fundis is being directed to the City of Surrey to support local initiatives that prevent gun and gang violence and help young people make good choices.

Elaborating further, Member of Parliament for Surrey Centre, Randeep Sarai shares his perspective, “We are all very concerned as to what happened to Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He was a father, a husband, businessman, and community leader. We have been in constant contact with the Minister of Public Safety, Marco Mendocino to avail him of the community’s concerns and he has met with members of the Sikh Liberal Caucus, Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Committee, and the Nijjar family and has assured them that they will give law enforcement all the resources and tools to capture those responsible for this heinous crime. Minister Mendocino is also working closely with Minister Farnworth in BC and with the community and addressing the concerns they have, including offering resources to improve security at places of worship”.

Evidently, the recent shooting incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for enhanced public safety measures. The loss of Hardeep Singh Nijjar has deeply affected the community, emphasizing the importance of creating safe spaces for everyone, including places of worship. Action is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of all Canadians, and serves as a reminder that continued collaboration between government, law enforcement, and communities is vital to prevent such tragic incidents and create a society where everyone can live without fear. Public safety remains a top priority, and it is through these collective efforts that we can strive for a safer and more secure future for all.

What got you interested in makeup?

Coming from a family of musicians, writers, poets, painters and photographers, I have always been surrounded by creativity and art. It was only natural for me to explore my artistic talents, including sketching, fashion design, DIY crafts, and, eventually, makeup artistry. My parents were successful wedding photographers and videographers in the event industry. I started my career assisting them as a camera operator at only 13 years of age, so I would spend a lot of time in the bridal suite. I noticed back then (late 90's/ early 00's) many brides did not have a professional artist with them. Their family members often dressed them, and cousins would help with hair and makeup. I saw that as a huge opportunity to offer more professional guidance and assistance, and since I already knew what looked good on camera (I had my own experience with makeup and modelling for my father's portfolio), I would help adjust their makeup to be more flattering for photos. I soon realized that bridal makeup artistry was something I should seriously pursue and offer as a bonus to my parent's wedding photography business.

Using makeup as a creative outlet and self-care ritual has saved me from many breakdowns"

Do you think makeup empowers women of colour?

Absolutely! Makeup has been a powerful and transformative tool since ancient times, originating in regions with women of colour. Ancient Egyptians believed makeup was next to godliness. In ancient India, makeup was used to worship deities, ward off the evil eye, heal ailments using Ayurvedic ingredients, and bring out beautiful features. Today, while makeup preferences and opinions can widely vary from person to person, we have seen that using it, especially during times of sadness, stress, or mental struggle, has proven to not only be an instant confidence booster but also helps to transform the entire mood and mindset to tackle the obstacles of the day better. And for me personally, using makeup as a creative outlet and self-care ritual has saved me from many breakdowns. It continues to be my escape whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed or depressed. I've done some of my best creative work during these times!

You pioneered the trend of tagging products on IG. How did you recognize that opportunity?

As someone who joined Instagram early on and had already been disclosing all products used in my step-by-step pictorials across Facebook and MySpace (it's the over-sharer in me!), it was a no-brainer to tag the brands instead of listing them. I didn't know who was running the brand pages, but once I started getting responses and private messages from the brands I would tag, I realized I was speaking directly to the founders! Anastasia Beverly Hills was one of the first who noticed all my tags. We ended up forming such a strong connection online that she sent me the biggest PR package I've ever received (10x of every single SKU!), invited me to her home, took me as her gate to the Golden Globes, made me the face of their famous Contour Palette, and even partnered with me to create my very own eyeshadow palette with the brand, "The Tamanna Palette" which became the first ever major influencer collaboration in the history of social media!

Some women think they can never get the makeup right due to a lack of confidence. What would you like to tell them?

This is EXACTLY why I became an educator. I created my online class program on DressYourFaceLIVE.com (which is now even more accessible on the DYFL App!) to help anyone and everyone, regardless of experience, how to achieve a perfectly flattering look for their unique features. I review everything we may be insecure about, including covering dark under-eye circles, hiding pigmentation and acne scars, properly contouring the face and nose based on size and shape, and even fixing makeup mistakes. I've never had a big sister to show me these things, so being that big sister to hundreds of thousands of women worldwide gives me a greater purpose on my platform. I'm here to help!

Was it challenging as a South Asian to climb the ladder in the beauty industry, which the West overly dominates?

Of course, as a woman, it is already challenging enough- we have both men AND fellow women questioning our abilities and creating barriers that don't need to exist (and sadly, our people tend to tear each other down even harder due to deep-rooted generational issues). But as a young South Asian woman entering a majority-white beauty industry (and being the first major South Asian influencer to do so and succeed), as scary as it sounds, it was quite simple. I used my unique ethnic background and cultural beauty practices to set me apart from the others and attract a niche audience like me, who engaged with my content and grew my following exponentially. Soon, non-South Asian clientele, including Hollywood celebrities and TV personalities, started flocking to me, wanting that "exotic" look that I became known for. I turned my identity into my strength, and because of that, not only was I able to thrive in my career, but many brands that reached out to me to collaborate were finally able to reach a whole new customer demographic.

Do you think beauty standards are constantly changing?

Yes, always. We've seen trends and beauty standards evolve throughout history. And now more than ever, with the rise of social media, everything seems to change much faster. As an educator, it's not only important for me to stay on top of the trends and keep the latest ideal beauty standards in mind when creating products or looks, but it's also equally as important to recognize where we need to do more (or do less). Unrealistic beauty standards can be damaging, especially to our vulnerable younger audience, and collectively, we are responsible for the changes we want to see. So as an influencer, I've strived to keep all my content diverse, positive, empowering, creative, and meaningful... and I've proudly been at the forefront of creating so many of my beauty standards and trends for over 20+ years.

What, according to you, makes you a relatable makeup artist?

Since starting my online presence, I've always been an open book. There are no secrets, no gatekeeping, no hiding here. I share what I know with no limits... not just my beauty content but my everyday life. I've spent decades forming a real relationship with my online family. They've seen me fall in love. Get married. Start a business. They watched as I moved to a new city to follow my dreams. They saw me miss my family terribly. One year later, they saw me welcome my family into my new city, to a new home I created for them with my earnings that I was so proud of. They saw my grandmother, my soul mate's health deteriorate. They grieved with me when I lost her. They shared my tears when I revealed the loss of my first pregnancy and rejoiced when I shared my second news. They felt my pain as I struggled all nine months before finally falling madly in love with my baby girl. And a few years later, they fell even deeper for my baby boy. And now, they watch and relate as I juggle the responsibilities of being an entrepreneur and being a mother while still getting what they came for in the first place: beauty, guidance and inspiration.

Navigating the corporate world in the 21st century is an intricate dance that requires a delicate balance of adaptability, innovation, and strategic thinking. In today’s rapidly changing landscape, successful professionals must possess a keen understanding of emerging technologies, global markets, and the ever-evolving needs and expectations of customers. The 21st century corporate world demands agility, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, making it an exhilarating and challenging landscape for those willing to take on the journey. Wondering what it takes to shine in the corporate world? Three industry experts from three distinct fields tell all:

Title: Business Partner, Financial Planning & Analysis Company: Central 1 Industry: Banking

What skills and qualities do you believe are essential for success in the 21st century corporate environment?

1.Know your audience. Recognizing your stakeholders and adapting your communication style to their needs.

2.Know how to learn. Don't be afraid of the problem at hand; you don’t have to have all of the answers, but you should know how to frame a problem and research a solution by leveraging your network, available repositories, and other resources.

3.Know how to synthesize. The biggest value-add in most companies is the ability to break down complex and large information into digestible and understandable pieces which decision makers can use.

What is one myth you'd like to break about working in the corporate environment?

Working late every day is not going to get you success faster. Sure, it can make you look like you have a strong work ethic, but this is more likely to guarantee burnout than career progression. What's more effective is working smart, knowing what you are good at, and showing it to people who truly matter.

How do you approach worklife balance and maintaining well-being amidst the demands of the corporate world?

Maintaining a good work-life balance usually comes with experience and when you are comfortable enough to draw boundaries. Nobody will tell you to go spend more time with your family or exercise or sleep well; you need to communicate these clearly and consistently to maintain boundaries not just for others, but also for yourself, so you can keep yourself accountable.

What skills and qualities do you believe are essential for success in the 21st century corporate environment?

1. Gather knowledge of technology used. This will allow you to be highly efficient and demonstrate leadership qualities, making you a subject matter expert and opening up opportunities for exposure.

2. Build communication skills. Knowing what to say is one thing, but knowing how to say it is very important.

3. Know when to say no. If given additional tasks and unrealistic timelines, push back, while taking into account the proper way of articulating your boundaries.

What is one myth you'd like to break about working in the corporate environment?

Corporate jobs aren’t always just “9:00am to 5:00pm”. Often, once you showcase your capabilities and land senior roles, you cannot simply log off at 5:00pm. At that point, it's all about deliverables and meeting milestones, which could mean starting earlier and finishing later. The

opposite holds true as well, depending on how well you manage your workload; you may start later and finish earlier.

How do you approach worklife balance and maintaining well-being amidst the demands of the corporate world?

I don't overload myself just to impress my bosses. I only deliver what is reasonable and push back when needed. Working out helps me clear the mind, which leads to better work performance. Last but not least, I do what makes me happy, enjoy, and let out the inner child outside work hours.

2. Be resilient. Especially at the beginning of your career, personal resilience ensures that you’re not crushed by periodic busy seasons or high-pressure environments. 3. Be self-aware. Continuously check-in with yourself and pivot your career towards something sustainable that’s going to keep you motivated and interested.

What is one myth you'd like to break about working in the corporate environment?

You do not necessarily need a high GPA and a long resume of relevant work experiences before you graduate university to land a good corporate job. Don't hold yourself back from applying to jobs and seeking out opportunities because you don't think your resume is “good enough”. Soft skills, like your ability to converse, learn new skills, build a team and empathize are also highly valuable.

How do you approach worklife balance and maintaining well-being amidst the demands of the corporate world?

Title: Senior Account Executive Company: Procter & Gamble Industry: Consumer Packaged Goods

What skills and qualities do you believe are essential for success in the 21st century corporate environment?

1. Be a self-starter. Along with the rest of the world, the corporate environment is constantly innovating and changing and it is important to keep up with what’s happening in your particular industry.

Whether it's the resonant tones of Tibetan singing bowls, the auditory illusions of binaural beats, or the calming embrace of nature’s sounds like crashing waves and chirping birds, the harmonious vibrations of sound therapy work like magic.

Ancient Healing Wonders: Acupuncture & Acupressure

An integral part of ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture and acupressure are ancient therapies that stimulate specific points in the body to promote healing. With roots dating back thousands of years, these time-honoured therapies have been proven to address mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and other stress-related symptoms. Using key acupoints, acupuncturists and acupressure practitioners stimulate the flow of Qi, also known as the life force energy, in the body and alleviate physical and emotional discomfort. While acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles, acupressure depends on applying pressure with fingers to the same points. When considering these therapies, it is crucial to seek out a qualified practitioner to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Get Artsy

It is a known fact that words alone cannot capture the complexity of our emotions. This is where art therapy steps in as a powerful alternative. Utilizing art materials and creative expression to help individuals explore their emotions, art therapy creates a safe and supportive environment where people can express themselves without any judgment. Art therapy uses various forms of artistic expressions like drawing, painting, sculpting, dancing, crafting, writing, and others to encourage individuals to tap into their creativity and emotions. Simple yet a powerful approach, art therapy can be used to work around several mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Mind Body Practices: Yoga and Tai Chi

Age-old practices, Yoga and Tai Chi have been known for their physical benefits, but their impact on mental health is equally significant. Yoga and Tai Chi are known to utilize a combination of gentle postures, sequences and focused breathing, to induce mindfulness, relaxation, and the integration of body and mind. Regular practice of these ancient practices can help decrease anxiety, improve sleep, and bring a sense of calm and balance.

Pawsitive Healing

Unleashing the furry forces of healing, animal therapy, also known as pet therapy, has gained recognition for its ability to enhance well-being. Numerous studies have shown that positive interactions with animals increase the release of oxytocin, the ‘happy hormone,’ in our bodies. Animal therapy work around this very concept, and involves interacting with various animals such as dogs, horses, and even birds to provide companionship, comfort, and support to individuals facing mental health challenges. Whether it's cuddling a dog, taking a calming ride on a gentle horse, or simply observing the soothing movement of fish, animal therapy works around the unique bond between animals and humans and offers a gentle and non-judgmental approach to healing.

By harnessing the power of dramatic arts like storytelling, role-playing and creativity, drama therapy provides a unique therapeutic experience. This form of therapy promotes self-expression, personal growth, and healing. Whether stepping into someone else's shoes, improvising scenes, or engaging in group activities, drama therapy provides an entertaining and supportive environment for exploring and processing an individ-

ual’s innermost feelings. Through this transformative experience, people can uncover hidden emotions, gain a deeper understanding of themselves, and connect with others on a profound level.

Float your worries away

Ever thought of letting your worries float away after stepping into a river or sea? Welcome to floatation therapy, the oasis of calm that's making waves in the alternative therapy scene. This form of therapy has become popular for its ability to stimulate deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Effortlessly floating in a sensory depriva-

tion tank, helps individuals enter a state of profound tranquillity, which results in numerous health benefits, including stress reduction, improved sleep quality, pain relief, and enhanced creativity. Floatation therapy serves as a therapeutic escape from the demands of daily life, providing a haven to disconnect and reconnect with oneself.

Note: While all the alternative therapies offer a holistic and creative way to improve mental well-being, it is important to consult your doctor and health practitioner before considering any of them.

The buzzword of the decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our lives, revolutionizing various sectors of global industries and enhancing efficiency in ways previously unimaginable. However, as AI continues to advance rapidly, concerns about its potential to, simply put, “take over the world” have emerged. Doubts engulf the reality of AI's influence and many wonder whether AI is genuinely on the verge of world domination.

Understanding AI's Capabilities

To examine the extent to which AI can ever take over the world, it is essential to explore what AI is capable of. AI refers to the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that usually otherwise require human intelligence. That said, while AI has made significant progress in recent years, it is crucial to understand the limitations of this technology. AI algorithms excel at specific tasks, such as image recognition, language translation, and data analysis, but they, at least currently, lack comprehensive general intelligence and perfect understanding of context.

Narrow AI vs. General AI

The AI commonly encountered today is often referred to as narrow AI, designed to perform specific tasks with exceptional precision and efficiency. Narrow AI is not capable of self-awareness, consciousness, or independent decision-making outside of its designated scope. General AI, on the other hand, represents the hypothetical concept of AI achieving human-like intelligence across various domains. While general AI remains a topic of scientific research and speculation, it is far from becoming a widespread reality.

AI as a Tool, Not a Mastermind

AI's current role is that of a powerful tool created and controlled by humans. AI systems are programmed and trained by human experts who define their goals, parameters, and limitations. The notion of AI taking over the world implies that it would gain autonomy and the ability to surpass human intelligence, leading to undesirable consequences. However, as of now, AI, in general, lacks the self-awareness and consciousness necessary to challenge human authority or manipulate its own objectives.

Collaboration between Humans and AI

Instead of AI taking over the world, a significant trend of collaboration between humans and AI persists today. AI systems augment human capabilities by automating repetitive tasks, analyzing vast amounts of data, and providing valuable insights. By offloading mundane work to AI, humans can focus on more complex and creative endeavors, leading to increased productivity and innovation.

AI as a Detriment to Students’ Work Ethic

Although platforms like ChatGPT can be helpful tools for generating ideas, providing information, and assisting with certain tasks, it is essential to recognize that its use should be approached with caution to prevent any negative impact on students' work ethic. Relying too heavily on AI to complete assignments or tasks can undermine the development of critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity. It is crucial for educators and students alike to strike a balance between leveraging the benefits of AI and nurturing the intrinsic motivation, perseverance, and work ethic necessary for academic and personal growth. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of both students and educators to ensure that AI is used as a supplementary tool rather than a substitute for genuine effort and intellectual development.

Ethical Considerations and Human Oversight

While AI brings numerous benefits, there are valid concerns regarding its ethical implications. As AI becomes more prevalent, it is essential to ensure that its development and deployment align with ethical guidelines. Governments, organizations, and researchers are actively working

PICTURES COURTESY: WWW.PEXELS.COM

to establish frameworks in the area to emphasize transparency, accountability, and human oversight designed to prevent AI systems from causing harm or acting unethically.

The Importance of Human Values and Judgment

AI systems are trained using vast amounts of data, and their outputs are influenced by the information they receive. Therefore, the responsibility lies with humans to ensure that AI is trained on diverse and unbiased data, free from discriminatory and harmful biases. Human values, ethics, and judgment play a crucial role in defining the boundaries and objectives for AI systems, ensuring they align with societal values and respect human rights.

Future Outlook

AI is undoubtedly on track to bringing about significant transformations in various aspects of the world. Here are some key areas where AI is expected to make a profound impact:

1. Automation and Labor: AI technologies will continue to automate routine and repetitive tasks across industries, leading to increased efficiency, productivity, and cost savings. This automation may reshape job markets.

2. Healthcare: AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by assisting in diagnosis, personalized medicine, drug discovery, and telemedicine.

3. Transportation: AI is set to transform transportation through the development of autonomous vehicles. Additionally, AI

algorithms can optimize route planning and traffic management systems.

4. Education: AI technologies can enhance personalized learning experiences by adapting educational content to individual students' needs and preferences. Intelligent tutoring systems can provide tailored feedback and guidance, leading to improved learning outcomes.

5. Environmental Sustainability: AI can play a crucial role in addressing climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. It can assist in monitoring and managing energy consumption, optimizing renewable energy grids, and predicting environmental patterns to mitigate natural disasters.

6. Customer Experience and Personalization: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants are already transforming customer service by providing efficient and personalized support.

7. Cybersecurity: With the increasing sophistication of cyber threats, AI can help bolster cybersecurity defenses.

8. Creativity and Entertainment: AI is making inroads into creative fields such as art, music, and content generation. AI algorithms can generate music, create visual art, and assist in video game design. Additionally, AI-driven content recommendation systems carry the ability to personalize entertainment experiences and suggest music and books based on individual preferences.

While AI has undoubtedly transformed numerous aspects of our lives, the idea of AI taking over the world remains firmly rooted in fiction rather than reality. The current state of AI is limited to narrow applications, developed and controlled by humans. Collaboration between humans and AI is fostering advancements in various fields, enhancing productivity, and driving innovation. By focusing on responsible AI development and emphasizing human values and judgment, we can continue to mitigate any risks that may arise and harness the potential of AI for the betterment of society!

GREWAL NAV

The Ultimate Ally for Builders and Developers

As someone passionate about the construction industry from a young age, Nav Grewal, Vice President at WBI Home Warranty Ltd., has a lot to be proud of when it comes to his professional journey and achievements in the last two decades.

After completing the Home Inspection Training Program in 2003 and several construction and business-related courses from BCIT and Kwantlen University College, Nav entered the home inspection industry as an apprentice providing an outlook on the current condition of older homes that a buyer could purchase. "I would complete a walkthrough with the prospective purchasers on the overall condition of the home, identifying any potential defects such as the state of the roof, water tank, heating system, etc.," he shares. His services would help the potential buyer determine the home's current condition and give them a fair idea of any defects that may be present and require maintenance immediately or in the future.

To acquire practical home inspection expertise, Nav volunteered for six months alongside a local home inspector who intended to retire and sought a successor to take over the business. However, due to a failure to reach a mutually acceptable agreement, Nav's mentor suggested that he contemplate starting

his own company instead. Following this advice, Nav founded Wall 2 Wall Home Inspections Ltd. in 2003. After spending a few months in construction, Nav discovered his deep interest in the New Home Warranty industry. As he pursued his home inspection business, an exciting opportunity arose. He volunteered to work alongside a Course of Construction Inspector and his team, delving into the world of Course of Construction inspections for a 2-5-10 New Home Warranty provider. This experience allowed Nav to gain comprehensive knowledge about the entire construction process, from excavation to completion of the project. Before this, he had primarily

focused on inspecting completed homes. The opportunity also allowed him to meet and network with many builders and developers in the lower mainland area. Soon, he started working on a part-time contract basis with one of the New Home Warranty Providers in BC and later joined them as a permanent, full-time employee.

"In 2004, I found my calling when I started working as an Inspector in the New Home Warranty industry," shares Nav. In the last two decades, Nav has been an integral part of the residential construction industry in BC, reviewing brand new homes, including single-family homes, townhomes, and multi-family

I have known Nav since he started working in home warranty 20 years back and always admired him personally and professionally. While he was working at WBI, I noticed the unbelievable number of people he knew in the Punjabi community. He has great people skills, and his ability to have open, honest conversations and build authentic relationships with people convinced me that he would thrive in a client relations role in our business development department,"

condominium projects, being developed from the ground up.

In 2015, Nav joined WBI Home Warranty Ltd., a burgeoning New Home Warranty provider with around eight employees, as the Lead Inspector. The company has since grown into a company with 38 employees. Initially, he worked in the Technical Services department, inspecting various residential construction projects for which WBI provided New Home Warranty. Nav's role as Lead Inspector also required him to visit occupied new homes and review potential defects submitted by new homeowners to verify if items submitted were warrantable defects that needed repair as per the Homeowner Protection Act.

In 2018, Gordon Houston, now President of WBI Home Warranty, nudged him to try his hand at business development. Though initially hesitant, Nav decided to give it a shot and started working towards getting his Level 1 general insurance salesperson licence. "To work in the business development department as an Account Manager, I was required to obtain a Level 1 general insurance licence, which meant returning to school and passing the required exams to qualify. I accepted the challenge, registered in the required courses, obtained my Level 1 licence in 2018 and subsequently my Level 2 licence in 2019," shares Nav.

With a hint of uncertainty about his ability to thrive in business development, Nav persevered in juggling both roles from 2018 until 2020. He worked as a member of the Technical Services and Business Development teams as he started shadowing Gordon and meeting prospective builders during 2019 and 2020. "I have known Nav since he started working in home warranty 20 years back and always admired him personally and professionally. While he was working at WBI, I noticed the unbelievable number of people he knew in the Punjabi community. He has great people skills, and his ability to have open, honest conversations and build authentic relationships with people convinced me that he would thrive in a client relations role in our business development

with them instead of having a transactional relationship," he says.

WBI is also an approved education provider through BC Housing. Nav hosts Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars, allowing licensed residential builders to receive their CPD credits, a BC Housing requirement for yearly licence renewals.

Nav also hosts a show called "Construct It" in collaboration with Channel Punjabi, which focuses on new residential construction projects. Nav co-hosts the show with WBI's Technical Services supervisor, Sonny Brar, and together they visit different construction projects and highlight acceptable construction practices, items of concern and an overview of specific construction-related details. "We do a walk-through of the site showcasing and giving improvement suggestions to help the community obtain basic construction knowledge, which will assist in raising the overall quality of construction," Nav says.

At present, WBI Home Warranty Ltd. provides builders with 2-5-10 New Home Warranty and Deposit Protection Insurance (DPI), which is a product that allows the developer to access the deposits held in trust from the pre-sale of units

department," says Gordon.  Nav quickly realized that he was a natural and immensely enjoyed working in business development. Before he knew it, Nav brought in multiple new clients every month while several other businesses suffered with the onset of Covid-19. "Surprisingly, our business took off even more during the pandemic, and many applications kept coming in every month," he shares.

In his current role, Nav assists existing builder members with account-related inquiries, registration of new projects, potential claims, and any other tasks builders may need assistance with or advice on. He is also heavily involved with prospecting and obtaining new clients for the company. According to Nav, builders choose WBI over the competitors because he is always willing to be available. "I am an ally by their side, figuring out solutions

DARPAN TM JULY | AUGUST 2023 Reflecting The South-Asian Lifestyle 50
I have known Nav since 2017, and he is my go-to person for anything related to home warranty. If any homeowner has questions or concerns, I always call Nav, who comes through for me each time. He is extremely responsive and is a great advisor and support to have on your side if you are a builder."
- Gurcharan Minhas, Director, Westcorp Developments Ltd.
Working with Nav is inspiring, fun, and very motivating. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever met, and his work ethic, drive for perfection, and client service standards are unmatched. Nav has an excellent reputation within the company, the construction industry and the community, which is well deserved."

which in return are to be used towards the construction of their multi-family project, thereby reducing the total construction financing required for the project.

Nav is licensed in BC and Alberta, where he shares a great rapport with builders since he worked as an Inspector in both provinces before shifting into business development. Nav is grateful that he got to travel across BC and Alberta, seeing places that he probably wouldn't have visited if he had not been in such a role. "The fact that builders already knew me gave me a jumpstart when I got into business development. Before I knew it, multiple new applicants were approaching me, both new builders and builders working with our competitors, all referred through word of mouth," he shares.

Between 2019 and 2022, Nav received multiple promotions owing to his performance, from being an Inspector to Account Manager to Senior Account Manager to Associate Vice President to his current role as Vice President at WBI Home Warranty Ltd. "Nav is also an integral part of WBI's succession plans" Gordon stated.

As a person, Nav is highly organized, which he believes has played a crucial role in his success. "I am very organized and plan my days well in advance, which allows me to be structured. I am usually up by 5:00 am, and my day begins shortly after," he shares. He is also an avid learner who believes one must learn and grow continuously. He believes in the power of active listening and the importance of having open, honest conversations.

Nav is pleased with his decision to be part of the construction industry. "It's an exciting time to be in a construction-related field. Any way you turn, from the Okanagan, including Kelowna, and outlying areas like Penticton, to Vancouver Island, there's development taking place. However, the downside is that prices have gone up, and the upward mobility has gone down. It's not as easy for someone new to buy their first home," he reflects.

Being in this industry has taught Nav to be adaptable and have strong conflict-resolution skills. "In our business, we run into issues every day. We are pretty

much troubleshooting daily, whether on the application side, on the construction side, or with New Home Warranty claims. So, a major part of the job is troubleshooting and coming up with an agreeable solution to the issue at hand," he shares.

Nav's colleagues and clients vouch for the superlative qualities that have helped him succeed personally and professionally. Gordon sees Nav as a highly committed and organized professional whom he trusts implicitly. According to Gordon, Nav is also well aligned with the

company's culture, which looks at staff as family and not a number. "We want to create an environment which is a pleasure to come to. Our endeavour has always been to create a space where if you see another colleague, you should be able to share a joke, tell a story or laugh together and where you feel great when the company does well, and Nav exemplifies all these qualities," he says.

In the next three years, WBI plans to increase its market share of multi-family developments in British Columbia to one-third of total BC Housing registrations. "We recognize the need to attract new clients, which depends on the level of customer service that we provide," says Gordon.

Nav is grateful for the opportunities that have come his way. "Gordon nudged me into my current role, coached me so I could do well here, and is still coaching, training and mentoring me," he shares, underlining how exciting and rewarding his career has been.  He continues, "I enjoy meeting and interacting with different people, colleagues and teams who support me daily. Throughout my journey, I have always aimed to maintain a high level of customer service, which at times has involved a few sacrifices from my end, and I am ever so grateful to my wife Ramneek, our daughters Aykam and Anaya, plus my parents who have always understood and supported my professional endeavours," he shares. Nav prioritizes his family during his free time, taking them to various beaches, cycling, travelling, and swimming.

LIGHT OF LIFE

Uplifting the Lives of Underprivileged Children

What if we lived in a world where no child was forced to drop out of school? Or what if we lived in a world where education was freely available to people from the underprivileged community?

Here's a non-profit organization called Light of Life Trust that has directly touched the lives of many children and indirectly impacted hundreds of men and women, young and old, from low-income families in rural India over the last 13 years of its operations.

Started in 2002 by Villy Doctor, this organization was founded to break the generational cycle of poverty – one life at a time. Since then, Villy has dedicated herself to transforming the lives of underprivileged rural communities, particularly women and children, empowering them to live with dignity and self-respect.

About the Founder

Villy Doctor, a remarkable educator, academician, psychologist, and therapist, is renowned as the visionary behind Light of Life Trust (LOLT) and Satyavati Spiritual Foundation. Additionally, she co-founded 'Ormax,' a prominent market research company presently ranked among the top three in India.

During her illustrious career, Villy Doctor was a distinguished senior lecturer at St. Xavier's College and a visiting faculty member at Nirmala Niketan, Mumbai. She also held the esteemed position of Head of the Psychology Department at Sophia College, Mumbai, for an impressive decade.

Driven by a profound fascination with human nature, Villy Doctor delved into consumer behaviour, eventually establishing Ormax Consultants in collaboration with her husband. After a decade of valuable contributions to Ormax, she transitioned her focus to studying meditation's role in alleviating

stress and its therapeutic applications. In 2009, Villy Doctor founded the Satyavati Spiritual Foundation to benefit humanity and establish Satya Meditation & Healing centers worldwide. She has conducted numerous stress management and meditation programs at esteemed institutions such as Google Headquarters in San Francisco, AOL in New Jersey, the Tata Institute for Fundamental Research, BARC, and Infosys Technologies Ltd.

Project Anando

This program is divided into four programs - the first one being the Anando programme. While urban India offers many educational choices and opportunities for children to excel in their preferred fields, the scenario in rural areas paints a starkly contrasting picture. In these remote villages, many underprivileged children are deprived of even secondary education. Anando program aims to extend its reach to every child from marginalized communities and empower them to pursue their aspirations and dreams. Anando supports children who may be orphans, raised by a single parent, from tribal backgrounds, or facing neglect, and encourages them to complete their secondary education successfully.

Then there is the Anando Plus Program which enables Anando children to pursue higher education or vocational training to get jobs in the organized sector or to become entrepreneurs.

The third and one of the most popular programs is Anant Programme. How is it different? While we often believe that a conventional degree is the sole means to secure a livelihood. However, the organization challenges this notion

by asserting that the applied arts hold equal importance and advocate for it. If a student possesses the gift of dance, music, or other performing arts, the program helps nurture that talent. Anant, a collaborative arts education program between Flowering Tree Inc, U.S., and Light of Life Trust, is dedicated to empowering Anando students to pursue careers in the performing arts.

Finally, there is the Anando School Empowerment Programme (ASEP), started in 2012 to enhance and strengthen school teachers in interactive classroom processes and effective modes of parent-community interactions. The program leads to increased involvement and participation of all the critical stakeholders in the child's life to ensure they continue in school to complete at least their primary education.

The organization has several other empowering programs, such as the Livelihood Training Programme - where unemployed rural women and girls get trained in basic employable skills, which helps them procure jobs or start their businesses. It also runs Mobile Medical Units and Environmental Conservation Programme.

“A co-wash is the common term for conditioner shampoo” says Marilisa Sears, artistic director for Marc Anthony Hair Care and MAV Beauty Brands. “It is a gentle way to wash your hair when it

needs to be refreshed. Much of the damage from shampooing is caused by friction, but incorporating gentle cleansing elements can help, which is what a co-wash does.” She advises massaging it in rather than scrubbing the scalp and hair to avoid damage caused by friction.

Bea Carmichael, global educator styling for Aveda describes co-wash as gently cleansing your hair and scalp with a sulfate-free conditioning wash. “Unlike shampooing alone, the hair is more conditioned usually maintaining a healthy balance of hydration in the scalp and hair, some can soothe dry, flaky, or irritated scalps.  A co-wash is very different to a shampoo as most co-washes moisturize and hydrate curls and coils while taming frizz.” Sears concurs that a co-wash is beneficial for curly hair which can often be dry.

Hair serum, just like those for skincare, are concentrated treatments that can be layered into your haircare routine. There are daytime ones applied more to the lengths of the hair and nighttime ones usually applied to the scalp. Anne-Marie DeGrandpre, Kérastase's marketing manager, says that as the scalp is skin, it should be cared for as such. She says that just like our skin, our cells

regenerate at night and night serum will work the same way by providing hydration, nutrients, repair ingredients on the hair and the scalp.

“The best way to use our day serums is on damp hair,” advises DeGrandpre. “So right after the shower, you’ve done your scrub, conditioner or mask. You’re out of the shower and your hair is damp. You’re going to use your scalp and length serum. Then you can blow dry your hair.”

Carmichael says daytime serums are there to primarily add sheen or shine to the hair, but some formulations can tame frizz, hydrate, strengthen and even reduce the appearance of split ends.

Serum versus Masks

Our hair benefits from using both types of treatments which are complementary. Think in terms of a skincare regimen: use a serum during the day and then use a mask at night when you wash your hair. Masks, which provide extra moisture, should replace your conditioner once or twice a week and are rinsed out just like a conditioner. Serums, though, are more potent and concentrated treatments, says DeGrandpre, and remain on the hair longer than a mask.

Glosses

“Gloss products are built to coat the cuticle for reflective shine that should last over a period of weeks,” says Sears. Although there are tinted options to enhance your hair colour, most glosses are clear. For Carmichael, to achieve the most benefits from a gloss product, she advises having a salon treatment rather than a using a self-applied product at home. “Well, if you want a glossing treatment to stay in your hair for a period, even up to 24 washes, these are only found in salon,” she explains. “They are applied like a tint, and sometimes these can also have tone added to them to reduce unwanted warmth or to add warm to the hair.  Salon performance products have advanced technology that not only work to add gloss and shine, but that can strengthen the hair from within.” If you do a gloss at home, DeGrandpre says it could replace a mask or conditioner. It’s applied in the shower on damp hair after which you would applied your serum and styling products to dry your hair.

Bond Repair

Bond products are for strengthening brittle damaged hair, says Carmichael who suggests choosing a naturally derived bond building product to rebuild and strengthen the hair from the inside out. “These work by reducing breakage in the hair and can strengthen even the weakest most fragile hair,” she says. “It’s important to do your research when choosing these products; look for clinical testing claims and ingredients.”  Those who colour their hair, especially if it’s lightened, could benefit from a bond repair product and also if you heat style. The more stress you put on your hair, the more it needs to have the bonds strengthened and protected. Sears also advises doing research before buying a bond product. “Though they are all the rage, it’s important to separate the language from the results. It is easy for a product to claim it is ‘bond repair’ because the hair has several types of bonds, some of which are actually meant to break and repair repeatedly. For example, hydrogen bonds break every single time you wet your hair and then ‘repair’ when the hair dries. Salt bonds

break every time hair’s PH balance is off and ‘repair’ when you restore it. Disulfide bonds, however, are extremely difficult to repair and for the most part once they are broken, they remain broken. True bond repair products target disulfide bonds to repair them deep within the hair fibre.”

Primers

Primers do much what the name implies: prep the hair for styling and are formulated to protect your hair against the heat from the drying or styling tools. “They are also good at detangling hair and making it easier to comb through when wet, which is important, so your hair doesn’t break, as its most vulnerable to breakage when wet,” notes Carmichael.

Oils

A hair oil is generally used at the end of a routine to seal the serum and any other treatments that were applied to the hair. The oil restores shine, malleability and fluidity after the blow-dry and provides extra silkiness to the hair, DeGrandpre says.

“All of our oils are super lightweight,” she says. “So even the most fine, oily hair can use our oils because our oils aren’t meant to be used at the scalp. It’s only going to the ends. You only need the tiniest amount. You rub it in your hands. You apply on your lengths, and it provides a silky, shiny, non-greasy finish.”

After forty episodes, four boyfriends, dozens of cringe-inducing moments, and countless laughs, Never Have I Ever came to an end last month. The Netflix series, a coming-of-age sitcom created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, was the rare show anchored by a first-generation Indian-American teenager. The character, Devi Vishwakumar, embodied the struggle of preserving her family’s traditions while embracing the American high-school ethos. As the lead, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan made Devi exceptionally likeable, even after cheating on her boyfriends (jock Paxton and fellow nerd Ben), lying to her friends, and swearing at her mother. The Mississauga native who beat 15,000 other candidates for the part is now poised to lead her first film, The Netherfield Girls, a contemporary adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” with Maitreyi in the Elizabeth Bennet role.

Darpan had the opportunity to dissect the ending of Never Have I Ever with Maitreyi and learn what she got from the experience.

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has nothing to hide

The lead of Never Have I Ever reflects on four years as Devi Vishwakumar, teenager-at-large

Maitreyi, now that Never Have I Ever has wrapped, what are you hearing from the fans, your friends, your family?

There’s a lot of discussion. Team Ben is happy, Team Paxton is upset. But beyond that, everyone is satisfied with Devi’s individual story.

I couldn’t help noticing that the show leaves a window open for a possible return (John McEnroe’s narration concludes with “for now”). Can you elaborate?

I would love to tell you what it means, but that’s all up to the writers.

Would you be up for it, or do you need a break?

I would like a bit of a break. I actually like how the show ends. Let it live for a bit, so when it comes back there will be excitement.

The show ends with a Bollywood-style dance with your cousin in the show (Richa Moorjani). How long did it take you to prepare, and who choreographed it?

Fun fact: The person who choreographed the final dance was the main dancer in the Ganesh Puja episode in season one. It was a very nice button-end and what a character ending for Devi, from being this girl who makes fun of the dancers —she described them as “dorky”— to happily becoming one of them. I had 48 hours to learn it, it was kind of tough: I also had to learn the harp and had a bunch of lines to memorize. I gave it the best shot that I had and hopefully was good enough.

Have you evaluated your evolution as an actor from season one to season four?

I knew nothing back in season one. I was learning on the spot. By season four my comic timing came naturally, I felt comfortable with taking risks and playing around. Having said that, I’m very

proud of my 17-year-old self. I did a lot for my first ever experience, and I did really good. What I’m proud of the most is how brave and courageous I was for trying.

What was the most “method” thing you did for the part?

I don’t do method. If anything, I did anti-method stuff, things that reminded me of who I was, so I separated myself from the character.

Rather than ask you what are you doing next, tell me what you don’t want to do.

I don’t want to do surface-level characters. If Never Have I Ever gave me anything was the opportunity to play an amazing character supported by great writing. I don’t want to lower my standards by playing a side character. That’s not why I’m doing this. One of the best pieces of career advice I received was to stay picky and do what you love.

Is there such thing as a WhatsApp group for the Never Have I Ever cast?

We have group chats. I’ve one with the guys, Jaren (Lewison) and Darren (Barnet), called “The O.G. Love Triangle”. That’s a fun one.

I keep reading in recent interviews that you may have lied. Can you tell me a lie?

That’s not how it works! You would know it’s a lie!

That’s fair.

I did love pranking everyone. I’m glad it got attention. I wanted people to know they got pranked. I’ve nothing to hide.

“The overall aesthetic for the entire collection, including the creative direction and presentation of the collection, was to retain the vintage element of the paintings but give them a nayi seher (new beginning and life),” explains Jigar, who started the brand Jigar Mali to bring forth his passion for regal and vintage Indian couture.

Kim&Nick

Q: How did you meet?

We met in 2015 at an SFU summer formal.

Q: What do you love most about one another?

Kim: What I love most about Nick is that he is very driven and always puts everyone else ahead of himself. No matter how much he has going on, he still attends to everyone's needs, if it's his family or friends.

Nick: Kim is a very easygoing, supportive person who enjoys the simple things in life and helps remind me always to take a second and enjoy what life has to offer daily.

Q: Could you share your proposal story?

We booked a spontaneous trip to Denver, Colorado, to watch the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in person. I told her that we should dress a little fancier so we could go out for a nice lunch. She was using the GPS while we were walking to find the lunch spot. I booked the spot close enough to this bridge, andshe didn't know I had a photographer hiding behind the bush at the end of the bridge. I was holding her hand while we were slowly walking across the bridge, and we were discussing how we should make more spontaneous trips like this when I got down on one knee and asked her if she would marry me. Kim immediately said yes, and the photographer came out from the bushes, to Kim's surprise!

Q: Describe your wedding day. What was your favourite moment?

Our wedding day was full of nervous excitement for both of us. Having our family by our sides made the day extremely special, and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful ceremony. Our favourite moment was when we locked eyes for the first time as Kim entered. It felt like all the buildup was over, and we were finally at this moment we had both been waiting for forever.

DARPAN Weddings
PICTURES COURTESY: A MASTER MEDIA

Q: Could you tell us about your reception?

We wanted an elegant and classy decor for our reception. Charming Affairs did a fantastic job by making our black, chandelier, and white floral décor come to life. DJ Xtatic from Q-Town Productions played all our favourite hits until 3:30 am. We got to see all of our family and friends together for the first time, and it was a great way to celebrate and end the wedding week of festivities.

Q: Can you describe your outfits?

Nick wore an off-white and gold achkan with a beige turban and gold pala for the wedding, while I wore a red and gold lehenga. Nick wanted a 007 look for the reception, so he opted for a classic black tuxedo with a bow tie, and I wore an Indian gown covered in rhinestones. Truly felt like a princess in it!

Q: How was your experience with the photography team? Would you recommend it to others?

Our experience with the photography team was terrific! They made us feel extremely relaxed and comfortable and gave us some good laughs! I would highly recommend A Master Media to anyone who is looking to hire for any special event.

Q: Where did you go for your honeymoon?

We have not gone yet; we will go to Europe next year.

Q: What are your goals as a couple?

We want to work hard on building a loving and peaceful life. We want to emphasize family as the number one priority as we grow individually and together.

Q: What are your favourite quotes?

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." – From the 1986 hit film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It helps put things in perspective when life gets stressful, as it can for all of us.

Q: What are the strengths of your marriage?

We use our individual strengths to improve our lives together. Having balance and working as a team is our greatest strength.

Q: If you could give any advice to other married couples, what would it be?

Make sure you're having fun because that's what it's all about. We all have responsibilities, but enjoying your time with your partner is priceless.

LEXUS IS500

Return of the V8

In what might be the swan song for the V8-powered sedan segment, the 2023 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance is the return of an eight-cylinder option on the sporty four-door not seen since the previous generation. And if this is indeed the end of the road of big motors shoehorned into compact cars, it's not a bad way to go out.

No longer called IS F, the 500 is the first product to fall under the new F SPORT Performance line. The 5.0-litre engine is essentially an updated version of the unit last offered seven years ago, now sending 472 horsepower and 395 lbft of torque to the rear axle, representing a massive improvement over the previous 416 and 371, respectively.

Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the 0 to 100 km/h time is rated at approximately 4.4 seconds. While an impressive number, peak torque doesn't come on until 4,800 RPM and feels slower, especially compared to the instant acceleration modern EVs provide. However, the experience is much more visceral, and the throaty exhaust note sounds almost musical once things get moving, something Lexus has a reputation for.

Handling is surprisingly as nimble as the V6 IS 350 F SPORT, and the larger mill only adds an extra 143 pounds thanks to some clever engineering. And like its sibling, the vehicle benefits from the Dynamic Handling Package, the equipped standard here, comprised of Adaptive Variable Suspension — which monitors G-force, yaw, velocity and steering input and then adjusts the firmness accordingly — and a Torsen limited-slip differential. Though built for performance driving, the 500 includes a Yamaha rear damper helping to increase comfort during low around-town speeds and stability and agility on the highway.

A New Hot Hatch is Born

The first-ever 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is definitely not the same Corolla of choice for sensible grandparents worldwide. A product of the Japanese brand's Gazoo Racing performance division, this rally-inspired hatchback instead embodies several decades of racing heritage and is designed to be every bit as capable on the track as it is in the city.

Just looking at the vehicle, there's no doubt something special is here. The huge wide-mouth matrix grille feeds much-needed air to the radiator and intercooler, while the functional ducts on either side of Core trim loaner provide cooling duties. The fenders are literally bulging out to accommodate wide gloss black 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels shod in sticky 235/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

Hovering 5.3-inches over the ground, the planted stance is complemented by the aggressive rear diffuser housing triple exhaust tips and a colour-matched roof spoiler. An aluminum hood keeps the weight down.

The dark monochromatic interior is equally sporty, featuring comfortable and supportive fabric seats with grey

stitching, a leather steering wheel, aluminum pedals and GR badging throughout. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster is fully digital and, in addition to the usual readouts, shows boost pressure and 4WD mode (more on this later).

All models pack the new eightinch North American-developed Audio Multimedia infotainment system. CarPlay was also finicky, automatically kicking out of SiriusXM multiple times and returning to the app's streaming source. Multimedia issues aside, the star of the show is the performance. Engineers have managed to extract an impressive 100 horsepower from each turbocharged 1.6-litre engine's three cylinders, producing 300 horses and 273 lb-ft of torque. Emitting a deep almost Subaru-like boxer rumble upon start-up, the only transmission option is a tactile six-speed short-throw manual. A joy to row through the gears, it's a night-andday difference from the clunky feel of the BMW-derived ZF shifter installed in the A91 Supra.

As opposed to a conventional all-wheel drive setup, the GR-FOUR drive train can be manually dialled to distribute 60 percent of the torque to the front axle and 40 percent to the rear in daily driving scenarios; 30:70 during spirited motoring sessions; or 50:50 when maximum stabil ity is needed, which is great when ripping around loose gravel roads, for example. A punishing suspension is one caveat to operating the racy vehicle on the street. Comprised of a Macpherson strut and double wishbone combo, the coil-tuned springs, shocks, and stabilizer bars aren't too forgiving over potholes and uneven pavement. Still, they are great at carving around hairpins and sweeping turns on the track, as I had the pleasure of experiencing during the model's initial launch.

A higher Circuit Edition grade is also available, bundling extras such as dual Torsen limited-slip differentials, forged carbon roof, vented hood, red callipers, heated steering wheel and seats, eight-speaker JBL audio and more.

RANGE ROVER PHEV Electric Elegance

Land Rover has introduced the fifth-generation Range Rover, and the brand has hit a home run. For the latest version of the full-size SUV, a P440e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) joins the lineup ushering in a new era of electrified 4x4 luxury.

"The New Range Rover is a vehicle with a peerless character, from its impeccable exterior restraint to its cabin's flawless tranquil sanctuary. Informed by creative intellect and a desire for perfection, it doesn't follow fashion or trend, but a modernist design philosophy, combined with over 50 years of evolution, it is quite simply the most desirable Range Rover ever created," says Gerry McGovern, the chief creative officer at Jaguar Land Rover, in a press release.

Aesthetically, a perfect blend of the classic boxy off-roader profile and soft aerodynamic body lines helping the model achieve a slippery drag coefficient of 0.30 (that's early 997 Porsche 911 territory, just for a dated comparison's sake). One of the unique styling details is the tapered boat tail shape of the rear, where vertical sliver taillights flank the split-open tailgate.

Sitting in the driver's seat is like sinking into a well-loved sofa. Collaborating with premium vegan leathermaker

Ultrafabrics, customers can choose their interior to be upholstered using all sustainable materials. Beautiful wood and milled aluminum trim fill the space as usual, and a massive 13.1-inch curved floating Pivi Pro infotainment touchscreen dominates the dashboard.

The ride is whisper quiet, and this is due to several factors such as a pre-emptive suspension system utilizing navigation data to prime damping to counteract any bumps in the road and active noise cancellation where the computer monitors wheel vibrations, tyre squeal and engine rumble, and then

generates opposite sound waves through 35 onboard speakers to nullify audible distractions.

Providing propulsion is a powertrain comprised of a 3.0-litre turbo inline six-cylinder mill, a 105-kilowatt electric motor and a 38.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The vehicle can travel a maximum of 80 kilometres in zero emissions mode at speeds up to 140 km/h, and don't worry about endangering passersby when reversing into a parking spot — the backup chime is paradoxically loud.

While most PHEVs are only Level 2 charging compatible, the P440e supports Level 3 at 50 kilowatts, so a nearly-full top-up takes under an hour. Connected to the former? Expect about five hours to charge completely.

Also, unlike many other PHEVs, getting on the accelerator to pass or merge the torque from the ICE comes on silently and seamlessly. Output is rated at 434 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, sent to the front and rear axles. All-wheel steering stabilizes high-speed driving and allows the SUV to be incredibly nimble in the city at low speeds, mimicking a much smaller car.

The 2023 Range Rover is available in several gasoline and plug-in hybrid configurations, including the more powerful 510-horse P510e not sold in Canada. A pure EV variant is expected next year.

VOLVO XC40 RECHARGE

Electric Crossover receives further Scandinavian refinement

Just three years after introducing the pure electric version of the Volvo XC40, the Recharge has already gotten an update focusing mainly on aesthetics.

“As we move towards becoming a fully electric company, our design language follows,” says Robin Page, head of design at Volvo Cars, in a media release. “With the refreshed fully electric XC40, we continue to evolve its instantly recognizable design, creating a more modern face with a sleeker front and an even more integrated grille.”

The front bumper features a chiselled look, boasting crisper edges and a unique contrast black foglight housing channelling the sideways-Tshaped style of the signature Thor’s Hammer pixel-LED daytime running lamps. In addition, the headlight themselves take on an angular shape. Previously inset, the solid-panel grille is now flush and frameless for a much cleaner appearance.

Plus and Ultimate trims, we tested the latter, offer eight paint colours — the Sage Green (+ $900) is particularly stunning, resembling matcha tea with metallic gold flakes appearing under sunlight. The new 20-inch five-spoke Black Diamond Cut alloy wheels mix raw polished aluminum and high-gloss dark paint and are func-

tional, too, as the aerodynamic surfaces cut down air resistance to increase efficiency.

Customers selecting their build also have access to premium leather-free upholstery options such as Charcoal Fusion Microtech (similar to suede) and textile, as well as Wool blend in a luxe light grey shade. The latter includes the sparkling hand-made crystal shifter courtesy of Swedish glassworks Orrefors. Decorating the dash and door cards is the standard Topography inlay resembling a map.

Measuring 4,425 millimetres long, 1,873 wide and 1,651 tall, the compact size of the XC40 makes it a great urban runabout that still has usable back seats, a 31-litre-capacity frunk and 452 litres of space behind the second row — enough for two carry-on suitcases and a couple of duffle bags. Folding the rear seatbacks down opens up 1,328 litres. The folding floor can flip up to keep shopping bags secure and reveals a hidden lockable storage compartment to stash valuables.

The powertrain has no changes; the small all-wheel drive SUV is still propelled by twin electric motors making a net 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque. Straight-line performance is impressive: going from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.9 seconds. The MacPherson strut front and independent rear suspension soaks up bumps encountered on everyday drives yet is firm enough to prevent body roll when cornering too enthusiastically.

The 78-kilowatt-hour battery yields an official maximum travel distance of approximately 359 kilometres on a full charge, though this figure is optimistic, particularly in the winter with all the gadgets turned on. It’s worth noting that the base Core model doesn’t have a heat pump, so the cabin warming is done us-

ing electricity, cutting down on range some. The Volvo XC40 Recharge is sold in three trims — Core, Plus and Ultimate — and starts at an MSRP of $59,950. Delivery times are variable, impacted by global semiconductor delays, and consumers are advised to contact their local retailer for an estimate.

CANADIAN IMMIGRANTS

SHARE THEIR STORY Meet

camping. When it's raining, we go to the recreation center.

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

Meet the Bhartia Family

Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

I (Sid) am a Chemical Engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur in India. I first came to Canada for a three-month exchange program with the University of Saskatchewan in my third year of undergrad at IIT with Mitacs Globalink Canada Scholarship, fully covering the expenses. During my exchange program, I enjoyed seeing Canada. After that, I applied to the University of British Columbia for my master's and got a full scholarship. All these opportunities eventually led to my immigration to Canada.

Which year did you immigrate?

I came for the exchange program in 2014, and my master's at UBC in 2015. I got married in November 2020, and Twinkle, my wife, came to Canada a year after, in 2021, after getting her permanent residency.

What were your first impressions of Canada?

I enjoyed my time as an exchange student in Saskatchewan. My water treatment project involved research on finding optimal treatment solutions for emerging contaminants in drink-

ing water. It led me to my master's at UBC to pursue a career in the same field in environmental engineering. Apart from my studies, I travelled extensively, going on road trips to Alberta and British Columbia from Saskatoon. I was amazed by Canada's natural beauty.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place?

I stayed at the university residence when I first came for my exchange program. But, the second time I arrived here for my master's, I moved into a rented place in Kitsilano, Vancouver, where I met my amazing landlords - Uncle Hari and Aunty DJ, who made me feel at home away from home and were always around to help.

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

Moving to another county, away from family, is always challenging. But I was fortunate to meet the right people who guided and supported me, making the transition easier.

How long did it take to get used to the people, weather, or surroundings?

It took very little time to get used to the people as everyone is so friendly! We loved the weather. Summers are lovely, with plenty of outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and

During my master's at UBC, I was involved in different projects and even field work. I did academic and industrial internships, presented my work at national and international conferences, and co-authored research publications in academic journals. All these experiences enabled me to develop the skills required to establish myself in the core engineering field, which is otherwise very difficult for an international student or an immigrant.

Twinkle had software engineering experience with an MNC in India. She started networking with professionals in her field in Canada while waiting for her visa in India. Leveraging her experience and network, Twinkle got a job in her field within a month of her arrival.

What do you like and dislike most about this country?

We appreciate the diversity in this country, though we wish it were a little closer to India. Miss our family back home.

Goals & Aspirations

At this point, we would like to grow in our respective fields professionally.

Experience so far

Our overall journey has been excellent in Canada, and enjoying every moment together.

Advice for immigrants

We believe in hard work, and there are always opportunities for focused and disciplined people. If you work hard, things will happen for you. It's just a matter of time.

the Bhartia Family Twinkle and Siddharth Bhartia live in Kitsilano and work as Software and Project engineers, respectively.
