team comprising ten eleventhand twelfth-grade Princess Margaret Secondary School students has qualified for NASA's Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC). They are one of the 72 teams globally and the only team from Canada to qualify for this challenge, which involves creating a human-powered rover capable of navigating Moon and Mars-like terrains, accommodating two individuals, and folding into a compact 5" x5" cube for transport to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. Enthusiastic about NASA's initiatives, Jeevan Sandhu, who currently leads the team, and Mehul Bhanot and Omar Arain discovered the challenge just two days before the deadline. With a race against time, they managed to bring more people on the team and submitted a 10-page proposal and a 3D model just minutes before the cut-off, which, to their disbelief, became one of the 72 entries to get selected.

Jeevan credits their innovative use of non-pneumatic tires in the proposal—an idea they picked from the book "Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down"—for their selection. These airless tires are ideal for space travel where traditional pneumatic tires wouldn't function. Having completed the second stage of the challenge, the team has submitted a detailed proposal outlining their rover's design and subsystems to the NASA engineering team, which will review and provide feedback on it. Jag Uppal, who teaches business and computer-related courses at the school, is on the team as the teacher advisor. "Having a teacher advisor was one of the prerequisites for the challenge, so when the team approached me - I immediately said yes as I wanted to give youth a chance and was excited to see what they could accomplish," he shares. Next on their agenda is constructing the rover, which is set to be shipped by mid-April. Soon after, the

1 There has been a recent spate of gun violence during broad daylight in Surrey. With policing being an ongoing issue for Surrey how can residents feel safe during such incidents?

When people call 911, they expect the police to arrive. Currently, the City of Surrey is policed by a mix of RCMP and SPS officers, under the command of the Surrey RCMP. I am confident that the citizens of Surrey will continue to be well served by the combined efforts and work of both police agencies. Over the next year, I expect the transition to move forward with more regular pacing like hiring of more front-line officers, and the reassignment of some RCMP officers to fill key vacancies in the province.

Gun and gang violence impacts us all. We are coordinating with local, provincial and federal police agencies to ensure that we are taking steps to keep people safe, and to put those who engage in gang activity behind bars. We know that the recent events in Surrey are concerning. That’s why we are making sure that multiple police agencies have the tools and resources they need to coordinate their efforts and work on these investigations. We’ve invested $1.6 million into programs to divert young people from gang activity which works with local programs like Surrey WRAP. 2 The latest development in the ongoing police saga has been the suspension of the police board and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke has accused you of bullying and misogyny in the past now stating that the BCNDP is trying to force a BCNDP police. How do you respond to that?

This is the City’s police service. The City formally asked to have its policing by means of a municipal police department, the Surrey Police Service (SPS), in 2018. The SPS was established in 2020 and has been in the process of being built since this time. There is no question that it’s time for the City to stop wasting tax payer dollars and move forward together to complete this transition. Any delays and increased costs are being caused by the City of Surrey. I look forward to this transition being complete and welcome members back to the Surrey Police Board. My hope is that there are productive conversations that lead to an agreement of the funding levels for the SPS.

7 The BC government introduced a bill banning the use of illicit drugs in many public places. Where would this bill ban the consumption of illicit drugs?

Hon. Mike Farnworth MINISTER OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND SOLICITOR GENERAL

Public Safety has been an ongoing topic in the news with the recent spate of gun violence South of the Fraser. In Darpan's 10, Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General for BC, The Honourable Mike Farnworth sheds light on crime, Surrey RCMP vs SPS saga, and the future of policing in Surrey.

3 In which area does the City of Surrey need

to act now?

The City has an obligation to provide its policing by means of the SPS, which requires them to work with the SPS, the RCMP and the federal and provincial governments to complete this transition. Surrey is a key partner in this transition, and their leadership is essential. This includes finalizing a police budget, signing legal agreements and working with all partners to finalize the transition plans. The City should also accept the $150M that the Province has offered for the transition. They haven’t accepted this funding, and it will be Surrey taxpayers who will pay the price for the Mayor’s games. 4 The public feels that the Surrey Police vs the Surrey RCMP back and forth has gone on too long. What will it take to put the focus back on public safety and not on political football?

I agree, this transition has gone on too long. It is disappointing that only the City of Surrey is dragging this transition out as long as possible for political games. We have been clear- provide a plan that is safe or continue the transition to the SPS. The City failed in providing a safe plan and now the City of Surrey is

6 What is the future of policing looking like for Surrey in the upcoming new year? How can Surrey residents feel reassured they will be served by the police in a timely fashion?

required to complete the transition to the SPS by law. I will not let one community make a decision that impacts the safety of people in another community. Public safety has been and continues to be the core driving principle that guides any matter related to policing. 5 Mayor Locke says Surrey residents could be looking at a 20% tax increase if the transition to the SPS continues. However, you are questioning these figures. With the matter now before the courts and the delays what kind of bill are the Surrey taxpayers on the hook for?

It is extremely disappointing that the City of Surrey has decided to spend significant taxpayer dollars on lawyers, consultants and public ad campaigns rather than invest in public safety in the community. The Mayor is trying to delay the transition which will only increase the costs for the people of Surrey. These delays are costing people more than $8 million dollars a month. We committed to providing $150 million to assist in completing the transition to the SPS, mitigating impacts to Surrey taxpayers. This offer of support is still on the table.

Under the Restricting Public Consumption of Illegal Substances Act, drug use is not allowed at parks, beaches, sports fields, and outdoor community recreation areas as well as within 6-metres of a public transit bus stop and within 6-metres of an entrance to a business, workplace or a residential building that is next to a public space, like a sidewalk. The legislation explicitly prohibits drug use within 15-metres of playgrounds, spray and wading pools and skate parks. 8 Have there been consultations with Dr. Bonnie Henry and Coroner Lisa LaPointe in ending open drug use in open public spaces?

We have engaged widely with many stakeholders including First Nations, Métis and Indigenous partners, service providers supporting people who use drugs, local governments, police leadership and public health. 9 BC has filed the first-ever application to secure an unexplained wealth order in Canada. Do you feel had you used this approach prior to the money laundering investigation it would have gone differently?

We brought in unexplained wealth orders (UWO), a court order that requires a person to explain how they acquired their assets based off of the recommendations from the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in British Columbia. We called that commission as a Government, and we are working through each one of those recommendations to stop BC from being a place where criminals can launder money. These orders will require people to explain how they acquired their assets if there is suspicion of unlawful activity. 10 What's a message you would like to share with the South Asian community?

We have so much to be proud of as a vibrant province and we have so much more work to do to tackle the challenges that we face. I am wishing your families joy, peace, prosperity, and new beginnings in the coming year. Happy New Year to our vibrant South Asian community in BC. May 2024 be filled with happiness and success!

In the world of field hockey, 2023 brought forth a shining star – Sanehpreet Basra, the U SPORTS Field Hockey Player of the Year. A legend in the making, Basra's introduction to field hockey is deeply rooted in family and community. Her father's background in the sport, coupled with a desire to give back, led to the establishment of a youth program at the Panthers Field Hockey Club in Surrey. At the age of 7, she embarked on her own field hockey journey, marking the beginning of a 16-year commitment to the sport. The announcement of being named the 2023 U SPORTS Field Hockey Player of the Year was a memorable moment for Basra. Her gratitude extends beyond personal achievement, “What makes this award even more special is seeing not only close family relatives support this journey, but also the Punjabi community’s support, along with their positive and encouraging messages.” Surely, the award has become not just a recognition of Basra’s individual prowess but a celebration of shared passion and encouragement. Attributing her success to a combination of consistency, hard work, and discipline, Basra emphasizes the importance of sacrifice and time management. She recognizes the vital role played by her family and coaches, particularly her father, in creating a healthy environment that motivated her to strive for excellence. Growing up in a family where sports and exercise were heavily embraced, Basra recalls always receiving unwavering support. In fact, Basra credits her father's disciplined lifestyle as a significant influence, highlighting the pivotal role of parental involvement in a child's sports journey. Amidst her achievements, Basra candidly discusses the mental challenges inherent in her field hockey journey. Overcoming the pressure of expectations and evolving her outlook on the sport, she now finds joy in every moment on the pitch, fostering a deeper appreciation for the journey itself. Balancing academics and sports, Basra acknowledges the potential overwhelm during exam seasons but stresses the significance of effective time management and prioritization. To young girls aspiring to pursue sports, Basra's advice is straightforward, “Just do it. You will only gain positive things from pursuing any sport, and if you want to play at a more competitive level, prioritize aspects like your diet, sleep, and fitness which are equally, if not more important, than training itself.” Looking ahead, Basra shares her team's goal of winning both the CanWest and U SPORTS championship titles. On a personal level, she aims to continue trusting and enjoying the process, focusing on continuous improvement and pushing her limits.

Introducing the First Sikh-Punjabi Winner of Big Brother US

Jag Bains

In a historic victory, Jag Bains emerged as the winner of Big Brother 25 (US) in 2023, etching his name in the reality show's records as the first Sikh-Punjabi contestant and winner in the American franchise. Hailing from the small town of Omak, Washington, Bains' journey has been not just about winning a game; it has been an encapsulation of breaking stereotypes, celebrating diversity, and making history. By Naina Grewal Bains' strategic prowess during the game faced early challenges putting him at risk of eviction. However, a lifeline from an ally marked a pivotal moment and the beginning of Bains's impressive comeback, as he seamlessly floated through the game, forming alliances and dominating competitions. Bains's efforts culminated in a convincing victory, and his triumph went on to mark him, by date of birth, as the youngest finalist and winner, but also as the first Gen Z winner in Big Brother US history. In fact, he not only shattered the all-time

competition record with 10 wins in a single season, but also established a new benchmark for the all-time veto record, amassing an impressive 7 vetos in the same season. Beyond the game, Bains’ significance lies in being a trailblazer for representation. He shares, "My family was the very first Sikh family in my town, so I immediately knew what it meant to stand out. Showcasing my Sikh identity and representing my community on a national platform was the most important part of this entire experience. This shaped my entire game as well; I knew I wanted to play a game with integrity and loyalty, not only because that's the way I personally wanted to play, but because I knew that's the message I wanted to send out when showcasing my Sikh identity." Family has also played a pivotal role in Bains’ journey, with every decision driven by the question, "Would my family be proud of me?". Bains emphasizes the importance of staying true to his values, a sentiment echoed by his family's overwhelming pride in his representation. Today, post-Big Brother, Bains is venturing into music, blending Punjabi and English in his original songs. For those embracing new challenges, Bains advice entails overcoming self-doubt and exploring hidden potential. Whether applying for Big Brother or stepping into uncharted territory in life, he stresses the importance of self-awareness, urging people to confront fear and take chances, “Know who you are, know your story, and know your why. If it's the right thing to do and if it's something you'd regret not taking a shot at, then do it scared, but do it anyway. You'll thank yourself later for taking that leap of faith!”

ainth's tryst with Bhangra began at the tender age of three, a love ignited by the rhythm that resonated with his soul. Life brought him to Canada in 1997, where he continued to dance with local clubs. However, family challenges and his father's illness in India pushed Kainth into a relentless cycle of work, juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet. His hiatus from Bhangra was brief as a family friend asked Kainth to teach her kids a Bhangra routine for a family event. This was just enough to reignite the flame. What started with a twostudent class in a parking lot soon burgeoned to 100, forcing Kainth to seek a bigger space. The birth of BC Cultural in 2003 marked the realization of a dream – an academy that would not just teach Bhangra, but weave a tapestry of Punjabi culture in the fabric of Canada. With minimal resources, he shaped BC Cultural into a thriving academy. “We competed in 171 competitions and we have 171 trophies.”, shares Kainth. Additionally, BC Cultural raised funds for Surrey Memorial Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and left an indelible mark on events like the Winter Olympics in 2010.

Amidst the whirlwind of establishing BC Cultural, life threw another challenge at Kainth – single parenthood, a responsibility that Kainth embraced wholeheartedly, going as far as attending parenting seminars to equip himself with the tools needed to nurture and support his children, Jada and Subegh. However, life took an unexpected turn in 2018 when Kainth faced a health crisis. Diagnosed with cancer, Kainth stood at the precipice of a daunting journey. The prospect of an exten ear, all looming as formidable obstacles on this arduous path. In the shadows of despair, Kainth faced a darkness that threatened to engulf him. Suicidal thoughts loomed, casting a pall over his existence, and he became a mere spectator in the passage of months that melted into over five years. Yet, in the face of adversity, the believer of Baba Deep Singh Ji refused to give up. Moreover, the community responded with an outpouring of support, encapsulated in the #GiveKainthLife campaign that became a lifeline for his dreams. "All my students are like my kids." Kainth emphasizes, his words laden with gratitude. Amidst the harsh landscape of illness, he found solace in spirituality and discovered that friends, in their unwavering support, transformed into a chosen family. Today, as Kainth prepares for the Bhangra Revolution at Hard Rock Casino to be held on May 18, 2024, the go-getter envisions a bright future. His aura embodies optimism, and the competition itself, with its international judges and fierce talent, symbolizes not just a celebration of dance, but a testament to Kainth's spirit. Rupee Kainth's journey, undoubtedly, is a melody of perseverance, love, and the profound impact of community, reminding us all that in the heart of Surrey, the beats of Bhangra echo the resilience of a man who dared to dream. Cyberbullying Digital

in the Age of AI By Naina Grewal In the ever-evolving digital landscape, the intersection of technology and human interaction has given rise to new challenges, one of the most pervasive being cyberbullying. As we navigate the complexities of online communication, the darker side of the digital realm unveils itself, highlighting the urgent need to address issues such as cyberbullying, often exacerbated by the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and face morphing attacks. The rise of social media platforms and online forums has connected people globally, fostering communication and collaboration. However, this interconnectedness has also opened the door to malicious behavior, with cyberbullying emerging as a formidable threat. Unlike traditional forms of bullying, cyberbullying transcends physical boundaries, allowing perpetrators to target individuals relentlessly through the anonymity afforded by the internet. AI, with its rapid advancements, plays a dual role in this narrative. On one hand, it provides tools for identifying and combating cyberbullying through automated content moderation and

20

sentiment analysis. On the other hand, it introduces new challenges as illintentioned individuals leverage AI for more sophisticated and targeted attacks. Face morphing attacks exemplify this troubling convergence of cyberbullying and AI. These attacks involve the use of AI algorithms to manipulate facial images, creating realistic but entirely fabricated content. Perpetrators can morph faces seamlessly, generating compromising or misleading visuals that can be weaponized in cyberbullying campaigns. Victims find themselves trapped in a digital nightmare where the lines between reality and fiction blur, leaving lasting psychological and emotional scars. The insidious nature of cyberbullying lies in its ability to exploit vulnerabilities, often preying on the very fabric of human emotions. AI-driven algorithms can analyze user behavior, identify triggers, and escalate attacks, making them more personalized and damaging. The use of machine learning further amplifies the adaptability of cyberbullying tactics, evolving to bypass conventional detection measures. As we grapple with the complexities of cyberbullying, it's

essential to recognize the broader societal impact. The psychological toll on victims is profound, leading to anxiety, depression, and, in extreme cases, self-harm or suicide. The societal fabric erodes as trust diminishes, and individuals withdraw from online spaces, limiting the potential positive impact of digital connectivity. The RCMP highlights that some bullying acts are illegal, and they can have longlasting effects on victims psychologically and sometimes physically. In fact, bullying behavior in childhood can be a precursor to criminal behavior. Addressing the issue requires a multifaceted approach. Education plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about the consequences of cyberbullying and fostering a culture of empathy and respect online. Schools, parents, and communities must collaborate to instill digital literacy skills, teaching individuals to navigate the virtual world responsibly. Moreover, the technology industry bears a significant responsibility. Developers and tech companies must prioritize the integration of robust AI algorithms designed to detect and prevent

cyberbullying. Ethical AI practices, coupled with transparent content moderation policies, can create safer online environments. Legislation also plays a crucial role in combating cyberbullying. Governments worldwide must enact and enforce stringent laws that hold perpetrators accountable for their online actions. Such measures serve as deterrents and provide legal recourse for victims seeking justice. In the realm of face morphing attacks, the development and implementation of AI-based authentication mechanisms become imperative. Secure and verifiable digital identities can mitigate the risks associated with manipulated visuals, ensuring that the online space remains a bastion of trust. Ultimately, as we confront the intertwined challenges of cyberbullying and AI-driven attacks, collaboration emerges as the linchpin of effective solutions. Governments, tech companies, educators, and individuals must join forces to foster a digital landscape where empathy prevails over cruelty, and technology serves as a force for positive connectivity. As per the Canadian government, engaging in cyberbullying extends beyond causing emotional harm — it can result in significant legal ramifications. Public Safety Canada emphasizes the potential consequences individuals may encounter when involved in online bullying or harassment. The repercussions of cyberbullying are not only impactful on the victims but can also lead to legal actions against the perpetrators. Such legal consequences may include imprisonment, confiscation of electronic devices, and financial restitution to the victims. The rise of cyberbullying in the digital age underscores the pressing need for proactive measures and ethical considerations. The integration of AI, while offering solutions, introduces new complexities that demand careful navigation. By prioritizing education, technological innovation, and legislative action, society can pave the way for a digital future where the power of connectivity is harnessed responsibly and compassionately.

Breaking the Chains By Naina Grewal

Unraveling Intergenerational Trauma Intergenerational trauma, an unspoken yet formidable force, weaves its somber threads into the very fabric of our communities, etching an enduring imprint on the collective psyche. This deeply ingrained issue, frequently overlooked and relegated to the shadows, maintains its grip on families and individuals across successive generations. The profound significance of intergenerational trauma, the mechanisms through which it is passed down, and its far-reaching effects on mental well-being, familial relationships, and community identity are undeniably prevalent. As such, understanding intergenerational trauma is of the utmost importance to truly heal and reach one’s highest potential. Intergenerational trauma is when traumatic experiences are transferred from parents to children through biological changes in the body or learnt behaviors. Trauma is the emotional response caused by a singular or series of distressing events that are outside one’s ability to cope. These traumatic roots run deep, with events like colonization and the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan leaving profound scars within our community. The trauma of these events persists, influencing how communities perceive themselves. A practicing psychiatrist, bestselling author, and Clinical Associate Professor at The University of British Columbia, Dr. Shimi Kang shares, “My dad is 90 years old and was 14 years old during the Partition. He witnessed his best friend being murdered. Throughout his adult years, my father suffered mood issues, likely untreated PTSD. I know my own serious health issues have been impacted by intergenerational trauma. My underlying medical issue comes from an inherited/genetic disorder

of low collagen production, causing joint issues, early cataracts, spinal cysts, and chronic pain. Thankfully, I now have awareness of the impact of intergenerational trauma and the knowledge to seek sophisticated medical treatments along with traditional Punjabi/South Asian medicines, such as turmeric, yoga, and meditation/kirtan, to help me function. role of adrenaline and cortisol, which are more easily triggered as a result of trauma. We know adrenaline triggers survival instincts like freeze (e.g., anxiety), fight (e.g., anger), and flight (e.g., distraction/addiction), explaining the increased rates of mental health issues, violence, and addiction among all those affected by intergenerational trauma. Cortisol accumulates in collagen-rich areas of the body, including tissues, muscles, and fat stores, explaining the increased rates of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer among all those affected by intergenerational trauma. In such cases, culturally rich meditation, art, and movement prove therapeutic and offer solace. Though post-colonial communities face added risks, such as post-migration first-generation challenges, including alcoholism, loss of identity/career, family isolation, mental illness, and domestic violence, that contribute to cortisol-related conditions, recovery is not just conceivable but imperative. Undoubtedly, the stories of elders contain a recollection of harrowing experiences during the Partition, of leaving their homes and watching their lives change forever. Hardyal Singh Sandhu was born two years after partition and is part of the Baby Boomer generation; he mentions how the hopes of his elders from India were shattered as their homes remained on the other side. Having recently journeyed to Pakistan to reestablish connections with his ancestral village, he not only rediscovered his family home but also had the opportunity to hear first-hand stories from the current residents. The pain is still palpable as Sandhu mourns unrecoverable financial losses and inescapable societal mistreatment, coupled with a lack of governmental assistance. At a time where basic resources like hospitals for the wounded were a far-fetched notion, the idea of trauma therapy would have been unheard of. Jas Hundal, a Registered Social Worker and the Clinical Director of Counseling at Future Ready Minds, highlights, “Many clients that I worked

with over the years have often spoken about the Partition, reasons behind their immigration story, and also facing racism upon arriving in Canada. Since their parents or grandparents witnessed or directly experienced traumatic events, many clients have voiced that they also suffer from mental health issues, but have been taught to internalize their feelings. When parents are disconnected from their children due to the unresolved trauma, children can face the adverse impacts of the trauma.” Sandhu remembers that for his father, life was primarily about survival, given how much they had lost during the Partition; his family worked hard to rebuild from the ground up. Thus, school was not the central focus for the children of the family as mere survival in the face of adversity took precedence over formal education. That said, despite the hardships, Sandhu’s family did support his educational aspirations and he achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first young man from his village to attain a Master's degree. Sandhu, who initially served as an Excise and Taxation Commissioner for the Punjab government, later retired as a teacher at a private school in Canada. Sandhu elaborates, “When I was growing up, education was regarded as an extra luxury rather than a necessity. However, as time has evolved, this landscape has shifted, and education has taken on an entirely new level of importance for today's parents.” This shift in emphasis on education represents a key facet of how intergenerational trauma can lead to varying value systems and beliefs across generations. Each generation’s priorities and aspirations may differ significantly, reflecting the enduring impact of their own experiences. Talia Ahmad, a younger Millennial voice, offers a glimpse into her personal experiences amidst the backdrop of intergenerational trauma and the subtle yet profound influence of gender roles. Her mother, who had weathered her own traumatic past, was unwavering in her determination to shield her daughter from a similar fate. Despite her having the freedom to

of intergenerational trauma, awareness and acknowledgment are essential. The stories of those who have lived through it humanize the issue and reduce the stigma associated with it. Hundal details, “We have to acknowledge that our people have been impacted by trauma and they are not at fault for what has happened to them. We all have a responsibility to future generations to break the cycle and shift to an action stage. This is vital for our communities to continue to flourish.” By seeking help,

pursue her dreams, Ahmad grappled with a poignant form of survivor's guilt. Growing up, she often pondered, "If my mother couldn't find happiness in her life, how could I ever deserve it?" To navigate this intricate emotional terrain, Ahmad embarked on a journey of self-discovery. This path included introspection, counseling, the wisdom gleaned from podcasts, and the guidance of a life coach. Through her journey of forgiveness and understanding, she reached a point where she regarded her parents as humans, who, like anyone else, had their fair share of struggles and missteps. “I remember my dad telling us how he was beaten up by his own father when he asked for a bicycle. So, he probably thought he was an amazing father for getting us the best toys from abroad. We need to understand that our parents did the best they could, rather than blaming them.” Surely, the trauma experienced by one generation ripples through family relationships. support, and engaging in open dialogue, individuals and communities can break free from the chains that bind them to the past. Together, we can unravel the threads that hold us back, forging a path towards healing and resilience. The legacy of intergenerational trauma can be rewritten, and a brighter, more resilient future awaits.

2024 Financial Forecast Understanding Interest Rate Changes and Mortgage Renewals

By Naina Grewal

In the dynamic landscape of the financial world, the year 2024 is set to usher in changes for Canada, especially concerning interest rates. Standing on the verge of this new era, comprehending the impact of these changes, particularly for individuals facing mortgage renewals, becomes crucial. The interest rate landscape is evolving, demanding vigilance, adaptability, and proactive financial planning.

grappling with the rising costs of living propelled by global inflation and increasing interest rates for loans, lines of credit, and variable-rate mortgages. Despite these challenges, the government notes that measures of consumer distress, such as mortgages in arrears and consumer bankruptcies, remain below historical levels. This resilience is attributed to the diverse economy of British Columbia, which has proven robust in weathering current challenges, maintaining stable activity throughout the year. While there are positives, the government recognizes that certain sectors are experiencing slowing momentum due to high-interest rates. Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Finance emphasizes its commitment to supporting the peo-

ple of BC, asserting, "At a time when people are facing various economic challenges, we won’t leave people to fend for themselves. We will continue to work to make life better for everyone in BC." Looking back at the government's efforts since 2017, the Ministry of Finance emphasizes the successful establishment of a robust economic and fiscal foundation for BC. The province has witnessed the largest GDP growth among large provinces between 2017 and 2022, a low unemployment rate of 5.3%, among the lowest in Canada, and below the national average of 5.8%, and the addition of 56,300 new jobs last year. BC continues to maintain one of the lowest debt burdens in the country. Turning to the government's outlook on future interest rate trends, the Ministry of Finance references private sector forecasters who anticipate that interest rates in Canada will remain higher for an extended period. This is expected to have a significant impact on people and provincial economies across the country. In response to these concerns, the Ministry of Finance recently adjusted its real GDP forecast, reflecting expectations of slower economic growth in 2024. Private sector forecasters generally anticipate interest rate cuts in the second half of 2024, with a gradual decline to more normal levels in 2025 and 2026. The Ministry of Finance emphasizes its awareness of people's budgets being squeezed by high-interest rates, affirming, "The government is making sure BC is in the best position possible in the face of these risks. We know that supporting people is the right approach to strengthen our economy." Anticipating potential changes in interest rates, the government is actively considering or implementing specific

measures and support mechanisms to assist individuals. The emphasis is on reducing costs, delivering essential services, and building a clean economy. The Ministry of Finance underscores its determination to do so by shining light on significant commitments made in the past year, including freezing ICBC rates, lowering child care fees, expanding meals and snacks at schools, and improving access to affordable local food, capping rent increases below inflation, doubling the Climate Action Tax Credit, and boosting the BC Family Benefit. Mortgage Wisdom Corporation’s Senior Mortgage Consultant and Partner, Karman Virk adds a practical dimension with his insights. He shares that the general consensus suggests an anticipated decrease in interest rates into the spring, contingent on economic conditions. However, any shifts in the economy could alter this outlook. Additionally, while not widely publicized, Virk highlights that fixed rates have already experienced a reduction. Moreover, Virk emphasizes the importance of looking at different alternatives, especially for individuals facing mortgage renewals. "A lot of people feel that they are stuck, but what I’m finding is that there are options out there.", says Karman. He encourages individuals to talk to someone who understands their financial position and emphasizes the importance of financial planning. "It’s a good time to review where you are financially, what your goals are, what’s happening in your life, and getting the right advice." advises Virk. In parallel, the recent announcements from the Bank of Canada bring transparency to the decision-making process. Starting

January 24, 2024, every scheduled interest rate announcement will be accompanied by a press conference, providing a deeper understanding of policy decisions. These changes aim to enhance market functioning, reflecting the Bank's commitment to adaptability in the face of evolving economic conditions. As we step into 2024, individuals navigating mortgage renewals must stay informed, seek tailored advice, and consider available options. The government's commitment to supporting its citizens, combined with insights from financial experts, provides a roadmap for individuals to navigate the intricacies of interest rate changes. The financial landscape may be shifting, but with strategic planning and a proactive mindset, individuals can position themselves to truly level up financially!

You’re fun-loving, adventurous and the leader of the pack! You’re the trailblazer and pioneer of the zodiac. You think fast, you talk fast, you act fast. You have endless hobbies that leave you with leftover fabric, paint, specialty tools and dark room equipment. You’re sexy, especially in a uniform. Your archetype is the Hero or the Heroine. “Faster than a speeding bullet!”

You’re easy-going! You love beauty and your creature comforts -- good food and drink, a great massage, a beautiful garden, antiques, and silk and cashmere. You know quality when you see it. You are kind and affectionate and slow to anger. You’re a generous host and a supportive friend. You make an excellent parent and are the rock of the family.

You’re playful! You’re a fascinating conversationalist because you know so much! You’re clever with your hands; or you might do work that requires your dexterity with words. Because your symbol is The Twins, you like “two” of everything - two homes, two cars, two laptops, two pets and sometimes two lovers. You don’t do boring. You love short trips, stimulating people, and an adoring peanut gallery.

My Work, My Status

My Work, My Status

Aries born in March got richer last year; but this year, all of you will get richer! You might earn more money; you might get an inheritance; you might benefit from your partner. The gravy train is coming and it’s simply a matter of when. Meanwhile, by summer, your plans for the future will become more ambitious! You’ll start thinking big! This is because you will see that many of the limitations that you thought were imposed from without, were actually self-imposed. Lightbulb!

This is a successful year! It’s your time of harvest, which happens every 30 years. Meanwhile, lucky Jupiter in your sign will protect you for the first half of the year. Then Jupiter moves into to your Money House for the rest of the year, boosting your wealth! Ka-ching! Pluto will move to the top of your chart for the first time in your life, making you strive more than ever to achieve your goals. You will sense that you’re capable of great success. Guard against being bossy and wanting to take control. Play fairly and don’t break the rules.

Friends and Romance This year, in your friendships and interactions with clubs, you can’t be the star that you might have been in the last few years. It’s time to cooperate in team efforts. This means you will have to come to terms with the demands of others and learn how to deal with them. For some, this might lead to a decision later this year to move on and let some relationships go.

Family & Home This year you have more money to make improvements with home and family. You might move to better digs. You will enjoy being generous and helping others with their dreams. Family relationships will improve because you feel less stress. The financial blessing you receive this year is not just that you’re richer -- it means you are now able to actualize whatever it is that you most value. That’s priceless!

Friends and Romance With Jupiter in your sign, others see you as attractive and they want to be in your presence. Meanwhile, the demands of your success and increased responsibilities might give you less time for your closest relationships. Being richer this year can benefit your relationships because you can enjoy vacations, dinners, gifts and fun outings. Nevertheless, you might have to fight for the time to do these things.

Family and Home With more money, you can be generous to your family with vacations and treats. You can pay for education and special courses. However, if the demands of your success rob you of time that you could spend at home – this might be a high price to pay. As this year wears on, you’ll feel a squeeze-play to give more attention to family and home; as well as time to meet the demands of your professional world.

You’re in your time of harvest, which happens every 30 years. Your business might prosper. You might get a promotion. Perhaps a decisive graduation. Maybe a wedding or the birth of a child. Whatever occurs now makes you feel proud! By June, lucky Jupiter enters your sign to stay for 12 months! An amazing double whammy! This combo is like putting a good saddle on a fine horse. You might assume a leadership role. You will attract people and resources. As, your world view changes, you might work to transform society. You might explore mystical philosophies or astrology. You want answers.

Friends and Romance This is a successful year for relationships because your success is evident to the world. And hey -- success is sexy! You look good to partners and potential lovers. Also, when Jupiter is in your sign, you’re happier! You have increased good fortune and divine protection. Your confidence grows along with your poise. Obviously, this improves existing relationships or attracting new ones.

Family and Home Generally, when things go well at work, life at home is also happier. (Happiness is contagious.) Nevertheless, your personal success and increased responsibilities could mean you have less time for loved ones. Family is your backbone when things are great, and when times are tough. Remind yourself how important it is to have a place that is your personal refuge. And let us not forget your own success is a role model to those who love you.

Quirks and Qualities

Quirks and Qualities

My Uncle Jack was an Aries, who joined the Mounties, fought in World War II and became a policeman for the Canadian Pacific Railway. All Aries choices. But because he was Capricorn Rising, he stayed in that job for 30 years. Every day before work, he spit-polished his shoes and every button and bit of brass on his uniform. Perfectionist! Attention to detail! Pride in position! Respect for tradition! All Capricorn traits. You value home and family. You work for your community.

You’re fascinating– often eccentric. You’re independent, individualistic, modern, broad minded and forward thinking. Many of you are rocket scientists and computer geeks. Female Aquarians often have non-traditional jobs as pilots, plumbers, welders or working for the Coast Guard. You can galvanize like-minded individuals to fight for social reform. You want to save the world before bedtime.

My Work, My Status

From June this year until June 2025, you want to enjoy life. Your creative potential will be enormous! You will feel healthier and physically active. Travel is blessed! In the next decade, you will undergo a transformation. You will lose weight without any effort. You will make dramatic changes to your appearance. You might experiment with hair and clothing to project a different image. You might become more domineering, wanting to control everyone and everything around you.

By summer, you can improve your job or get a better job. Factoid. Financial speculation in the care and education of children, hotels, restaurants, golf courses, sports and resorts are strong choices. The first part of this year is easy going, which is why you might want to relax. Work-related travel will delight. Even your sense of humour will improve because you’ll feel happier!

Since 2020, you’ve been changing. You’re pondering your values. This is why some relationships might end; some might begin. Because your home will improve -- this might help relationships. For the first time in over a decade, you have the courage to be yourself and express yourself to others without fear or apology. If you’re with someone who squashes this energy – not good! You need a relationship that allows you to grow and change.

Family and Home

You’re in a two-year window with a likely residential move. Meanwhile, different people might be living with you. An adult child might return. You might have increased responsibilities with a parent. Fortunately, improved finances can offer better living conditions and perks. You value family. You want your kids to be responsible citizens who fit into society. People who are well mannered, law-abiding and reflect on you in a favourable way.

Because Pisces rules the feet, many of you are great dancers and all of you move with grace. You’re a sympathetic listener, an entertaining conversationalist, and a marvellous storyteller! You might even wear a costume.

It’s fabulous for sales and marketing. Later, your good fortune will attract opportunities in real estate. Home businesses will flourish; as well as businesses that deal with homes, families, real estate and agriculture. There are times when we must forge ahead in life. However, this year, you can choose to relax and put less effort into getting ahead.

Friends and Romance Many of you are unsure about relationships. You might not feel “date ready”. Since 2020, life has been a roller coaster. Because you’re more serious about what’s happening in your life, you’re more serious about your relationships. Nevertheless, you now have the courage to speak up about what you want for yourself. This will improve your existing relationships, or attract new relationships that are more real and more in line with what you need.

You can renovate or redecorate or move to something better. Family members will be happier and more generous to each other. You will have more enjoyment at family gatherings. Since the partition, we have lost more than half of Sikh history. Conservatively speaking, this translates to well over 100 monuments that have been destroyed or eroded at the hands of neglect. Of what’s left, 80% of Sikh history is currently in Pakistan, and in the next 50 years, there may be very little remaining. n the fascinating tapestry of Sikh history, Bhupinder Singh Bance, known as Peter Bance, emerges as a luminary figure whose passion for preserving the legacy of Maharajah Duleep Singh, and beyond, has left an indelible mark on the historical landscape of Sikhism, Punjab, and beyond. A renowned Sikh historian, independent researcher, and antiquarian, Bance's journey into the realms of Sikh history is as unconventional as it is compelling. Born into a family that moved to Britain in the 1930s, Bance's initial foray into the world of academia saw him as a marketing student rather than a history scholar. However, fate had a different path laid out for him. It was during a visit to Thetford that the seeds of curiosity were sown as he stumbled upon the samadhi of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last sovereign ruler of the Sikh Empire. Intrigued by this chance encounter, Bance initiated a quest to unravel the lesser-known aspects of Duleep Singh's life, particularly focusing on his descendants. This quest became the catalyst for the creation of a vast collection of artifacts and memorabilia associated with the Maharajah and his family. Bance’s newfound passion prompted him to place advertisements in local papers, seeking information about Maharajah Duleep Singh's children. The response was

overwhelming – 400 replies flooded in, unveiling a treasure trove of artifacts and personal stories. Bance's journey became a personal connection to his roots, a way of staying tethered to his Indian heritage, despite never having set foot in India at that point. With a collection of such magnitude, Bance became a custodian of history, showcasing his treasures globally, from the Victoria & Albert Museum to The British Museum and the

Of what’s left, 80% of Sikh history is currently in Pakistan, and in the next 50 years, there may be very little remaining. We catalog what we can, but it still hurts to see these sites practically rotting.” Bance further details that many historic gurdwaras are situated in rural areas devoid of Sikh populations, making renovations seem impractical. While there is a significant need for substantial Sikh tourism, the current demand appears insufficient. Even the Kartarpur Corridor, once bustling, now witnesses a decline in

activity, leading to the closure of shops in the vicinity. Bridging the generational gap in understanding shared history involves Bance's advocacy for younger generations to visit historical sites in Pakistan. Social media's role in fostering interest is evident, as Sikh visitors have increased in the last five years. Bance's anecdotes, shared online, receive hundreds of messages, showcasing the power of digital platforms in connecting people to their heritage. The challenges of neglect and destruction faced by Sikh monuments after partition underscore the importance of creating awareness. Bance's plea for government involvement, driven by tourism incentives, reflects a pragmatic approach to preserving these historical sites for future generations. Undoubtedly, the significance of Bance's work goes beyond scholarly pursuits; it resonates with a personal connection to his roots. His extensive collection of memorabilia related to Maharajah Duleep Singh serves as a bridge between the past and present, linking generations and preserving a rich cultural heritage. In essence, Bance's journey unfolds as a testament to the power of passion, determination, and the unwavering commitment to safeguarding Sikh history and Punjab’s history. His efforts transcend borders, bringing to light not just the historical narrative but the human stories that breathe life into the past, enriching our collective understanding of the world.

Balancing Acts The Impact of Work Hour Restrictions on International Students In the dynamic landscape of international education, the repercussions of government policies on work hours for international students are both intricate and far-reaching. A recent 2023 pilot program in Canada had temporarily lifted the 20-hour per week cap on offcampus work for international students. This decision was motivated by the challenges faced by employers in retaining workers and addressing labor shortages. The announcement followed years of advocacy by international students urging the government to eliminate the work cap. However, concerns have emerged regarding the reinstatement of the work hour cap for 2024 and beyond, and its potential impact on students' financial stability and overall well-being. The Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulation stipulates that international students holding a study permit without a work permit are limited to working a maximum of 20 hours per week off-campus during the academic session, while they are permitted to work full-time during breaks between sessions. On-campus work has no hourly restrictions. Violation of this work cap, as outlined by the Government of Canada, may result in severe consequences, including the loss of student status, denial of approval for future study or work permits, or even deportation.

consideration. Expecting international students to adhere to the conditions of their study permit, the Ministry does understand that being abroad to pursue their post-secondary education can be a challenging time and encourages exploration of scholarships and bursaries to alleviate financial pressures. Preparing for the cost of living in British Columbia is deemed crucial by the Ministry, with parttime work serving as a means for students to support themselves without compromising their education. The Ministry expresses commitment to ensuring international students receive a quality education, hinting at future steps to protect and improve educational standards, “While we understand the financial pressures being faced by international students, we expect international students to abide by the conditions of their study permit. It’s important for international students to be prepared for the cost of living in BC, and to be able to support themselves throughout their time here on parttime work so they can focus on their education and reduce their potential vulnerabilities.” Shifting to a local perspective, Vanshika Sharma, a full-time Copywriter & Talk Show Producer, is familiar with the challenges faced by international students, and views the 20-hour limit as a positive step. She argues, "This 20hour limit is a great step in reiterating that education should be the top priority for the students here." Sharma expresses concerns about students getting potentially misdirected in pursuit of earning extra income and emphasizes the importance of redirecting their focus to academic pursuits. She elaborates, “To my surprise, I have met quite a few international students who unknowingly have accepted to stay in their ‘survival’ jobs, even if it doesn't match their career goals.” As such, a point of view regarding the 20-hour limit not only entails an increased focus on education, but also may serve as a reminder for international students to possibly align their parttime work with their long-term career aspirations, fostering a more purposeful and strategic approach to their time in a

new academic and cultural environment. In contrast, Aman Budhiraja, an international student, provides a firsthand account of the challenges posed by the 20-hour limit. He reflects, "The 20-hour limit is too restrictive!" Budhiraja arrived in Canada in April 2023, and during the initial period, he could only work 20 hours per week. He highlights the financial strain, stating that working parttime barely covered rent and groceries. Budhiraja also raises concerns about the potential impact on the local community, sharing, "We hear a lot of stories where international students are not getting jobs for months." Regarding concerns about living expenses and contributions to the local workforce, Budhiraja points out that the 20-hour limit is a hurdle for many students. He mentions the high cost of living in Canada and how students may resort to cash jobs to make ends meet, “Many students have already spent a lot of money to come to Canada and many

cannot ask for more money from back home, as it will add more burden to their parents.” When asked about potential support measures during the transition back to the 20-hour work limit, Budhiraja suggests that the government should enable incoming students to learn and be trained for skilled jobs. He believes that this approach would benefit both students and the community by addressing the shortage of skilled labor. It is no secret that life for international students is already

challenging, with the complexities of adjusting to a new country, culture, and academic environment. The imposition of the 20-hour work limit may add an additional layer of difficulty, as many students struggle to meet the high cost of living in Canada. Alternatively, it may allow for focus to remain on academics. While the intention behind this policy may be to create more job opportunities for local individuals, it undeniably raises concerns about the potential adverse effects on students.

Striking a delicate balance between supporting local employment and ensuring the well-being of international students is crucial. It is essential to consider the holistic impact of such policies, recognizing that the challenges faced by students are not isolated but interconnected with broader economic and social dynamics. A thoughtful and comprehensive approach is necessary to navigate these complexities and foster an inclusive environment that supports both the local community and international students. Surely, the perspectives presented highlight the complexities surrounding the federal policy on work hours for international students in Canada. While the government emphasizes the temporary nature of the existing policy and the importance of education, local residents like Sharma see it as a positive step to refocus students on academics. On the other hand, international students like Budhiraja express concerns about financial burdens and the potential impact on job availability. Moving forward, the balance between economic considerations, educational priorities, and the well-being of international students remains a critical issue.

Canadian Food Banks in High Demand

PICTURES COURTESY: WWW.SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

By Naina Grewal

In recent years, the reliance on food banks has witnessed a notable surge, leaving many to wonder about the underlying factors driving this trend. Earlier this year, there were an unprecedented 1.9 million visits to food banks in Canada. This is a 32% increase from 2022 and a 78% increase since before the pandemic. Unsurprisingly, food banks are approaching 2024 with growing concerns as the sustained increase in demand places additional strain on their resources and capacities. One of the primary reasons behind the increasing dependence on food banks can be attributed to the financial challenges people face in affording healthy food. The escalating costs of living, including housing and food, have outpaced the growth in average incomes. The consequence is that an alarming number of people are unable to access or afford the food necessary for maintaining their well-being. Carroll says, “We are seeing an increase in employed adults coming through the food bank. They are finding it hard to make ends meet with rising costs.” This situation, where the prices of essentials are soaring, and yet incomes are not increasing at the same pace, has compelled numerous individuals to turn to food banks as a lifeline to obtain the sustenance they need. Divisional Secretary for Public Relations at The Salvation Army’s BC Division, Gina Haggett adds, “Those hit hardest include families with children – we have seen a significant increase in families with children who need our help. Moreover, over 32% of the households we have served this year alone are needing our support for the first time ever. What is especially troubling is that our food bank services to children have increased by over 27% from the previous year.” While the increasing cost of living affects the entire population, certain vulnerable groups find themselves more

severely impacted by this challenge. Indigenous people, new immigrants, and single-parent families face additional hurdles in securing good employment opportunities and support systems. This pre-existing disadvantage intensifies their struggles in accessing nutritious food. As a result, these marginalized communities are compelled to turn to food banks as a means of addressing their food insecurity. These groups often

grapple with multiple layers of adversity. Factors such as discrimination, lack of opportunities, and limited access to resources further complicate their ability to provide for their families. In this context, food banks become a crucial source of support for these communities, helping bridge the gap in accessing nutritious meals. The surge in demand has inevitably presented food banks with numerous challenges. Dan Huang-Taylor, Executive Director of Food Banks BC acknowledges the predicament organizations are facing, “There is a significant strain on food banks. Along with increased demand, we are also seeing major drops in donations, both food and monetary, of approximately 30% across the province.” While the need for their services continues to grow, the generosity of donors has seen a decline, mirroring the economic pressures affecting everyone. This situation places food banks in the challenging position of striving to do more with fewer resources. Mahmood Zafar, Interim Executive Director at Surrey Food Bank details, “As the cost of living keeps climbing, more people are relying on us for help. However, at the same time, the generosity from donors is shrinking because everyone is feeling the pinch. So, we're stuck in this tricky spot, trying to do more with less. With our client list growing, we're ramping up our efforts to find and distribute more food. We're also upgrading our capacity to handle the food, making sure it stays in top shape. To make all of this happen, we’re working on some new and innovative approaches to generate funds. It's a challenging puzzle, but we're determined to crack it!” Needless to say, the general public plays a pivotal role in supporting food banks during these challenging times. Paramount is the power of community action and how anyone can contribute to this cause. Spreading awareness is the first step; by informing friends and family about the vital role food banks play, individuals can create a ripple effect of support that can transform into a wave of assistance. Furthermore, even the smallest monthly dona-

tions can make a substantial difference. By contributing regularly, individuals are essentially planting seeds of sustainability that enable food banks to continue their essential work. Carroll encourages people to join this journey, “Host a food drive. Spread the word and help raise awareness about food security. Volunteer with your local food bank. If you can't give cash or food, try giving time.” Ironically, a related communal concern is the underreported extent of food scarcity. Experts actually believe that the situation is more severe than estimated because many individuals in need are hesitant to use food bank

Building Tomorrow Canada's Immigration Plans Amidst Affordable Housing Realities

By Naina Grewal In a bold move to shape its demographic landscape, Canada is gearing up to welcome a significant influx of immigrants, with the government's announced targets aiming to bring in 485,000 new permanent residents in 2024, escalating to 500,000 in 2025, and maintaining that level in 2026. This strategic push is propelled by the twin engines of economic growth and a compassionate response to global humanitarian crises. However, as Canada sets its sights on this ambitious immigration plan, a nuanced examination reveals a deliberate shift in emphasis. While overall admissions are on the rise, there is a specific pivot towards classes of immigration tied to the economy and family reunification. Conversely, admissions for humanitarian and refugee applications are slated to decrease, signaling a potential recalibration of evaluation criteria for claims grounded solely in humanitarian or refugee status. In tandem with this surge in immigration, the Canadian government is strategically molding its policies to meet the demand for skilled workers in critical sectors. Health, STEM, trades, transportation, and agriculture are focal points for growth, and various initiatives have been introduced to facilitate permanent and temporary residence. immigration ambitions, a pertinent question arises: Is Canada equipped to support such an influx given the prevailing challenges with affordable housing? The Honorable Ravi Kahlon, MLA for Delta North and Minister of Housing acknowledges the existence of a housing crisis, emphasizing a staggering two-decade lag in government investment in affordable housing. He reveals that efforts have been underway to eliminate red tape and expedite the construction of housing for low-income individuals, a sector often neglected by the private market. In regards to the alignment of housing policies with the anticipated increase in population due to the government's immigration plans, Minister Kahlon stressed the need for better collaboration with the federal government. While supporting the immigration numbers from a British Columbia perspective, he highlights the exponential increase in temporary residence numbers, particularly in the case of international students. The challenge, he emphasized, is not with the immigrants themselves but with the strain it places on local resources and the need for closer cooperation between provincial and federal authorities. "There is no doubt that we will be able to solve the housing crisis. We just have to remove barriers; that is the focus for the upcoming new year." Minister Kahlon declared optimistically, un-

derscoring a commitment to addressing the housing challenges that accompany the ambitious immigration targets. Member of Parliament for Surrey Centre, Randeep Sarai, identifies the lack of housing supply as the most pressing challenge. He points out that municipalities and cities have not been building enough supply. However, MR Sarai also sheds light on positive trends, noting an increase in multiplex construction across the country, with thousands of units being added. This surge is attributed to a government incentive program aimed at revitalizing the rental stock.

Our platform relies significantly on a housing strategy, but the implementation takes time. The construction process has begun, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down progress as well." MP Randeep Sarai Member of Parliament for Surrey Centre

Acknowledging the challenges posed by a retiring baby boomer population, MP Sarai emphasizes the need for a work-

force to build new homes. He highlights the lag period between an increased population and the availability of housing, urging for a collective understanding that addressing housing challenges requires time, “It would have been preferable if other governments had prioritized housing earlier, too. Our platform relies significantly on a housing strategy, but the implementation takes time. The construction process has begun, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down progress as well.” Bringing forth a unique perspective, Chelsea Minhas, Chief Program Officer at Covenant House Vancouver focuses on the impact on vulnerable populations, particularly young people. Serving those experiencing homelessness between the ages of 16-24, Covenant House Vancouver faces the harsh reality of an already competitive housing market. Minhas emphasized the need for developmentally appropriate housing, noting that while additional resources have been allocated to low-income and supportive housing, the focus has predominantly been on the adult population. This, she argues, neglects the specific needs of young people starting out in life, exacerbating their struggles in an already challenging housing market. Minhas further sheds light on the challenges posed by an influx of refugees and asylum seekers. While Canada welcomes an increasing number of immigrants, the support structures for these vulnerable populations often lag behind. Minhas underscores the need for support to match the pace of immigration increases, especially for those with significant trauma issues stemming from war-torn countries. A fifth of the homeless population consists of young individuals, yet only a corresponding 20% of resources are allocated to support them. In the Covenant House Vancouver’s 25-year history, the team is, for the first time, witnessing unprecedented challenges, including a shortage of beds and an alarming increase in turn-away numbers. “Many young people arrive in Canada as their family's last hope, only to discover that the reality doesn't align with their expectations. Chief Executive Officer of Surrey Urban Mission, Jack O’Halloran brings into the limelight the challenging the definition of "affordable" housing. He highlights the plight of the working poor, a sizable yet unrecognized population struggling to make ends meet. O’Halloran points out that despite having jobs, many individuals find themselves with little to no disposable income after paying bills and rent, leading them to rely on food banks for sustenance. For organizations like Surrey Urban Mission that operate homeless shelters, the challenges are manifold. DARPAN SALUTES

Vinayak Lohani

Understanding and realizing one’s motivation is a continuous process. It’s important to remind oneself of why you started on this path."

A Journey of Selfless Service By Shweta Kulkarni

Darpan engaged in a conversation with Vinayak Lohani, who boldly eschewed a traditional career trajectory to become a symbol of hope for India’s vulnerable children.

I

n a world where few dare to forsake a lucrative career and dedicate their lives to the welfare of others, Vinayak Lohani, an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, chose a path that defied conventional. Inspired by the profound ideals of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna, Lohani, turned away from tempting opportunities and founded his non-profit organization Parivaar in 2003. Starting with just three children in a modest rented apartment in West Bengal, Parivaar has evolved into a beacon of hope for numerous children, who are highly vulnerable to exploitation, victimization, and trafficking, including orphans, street children, abandoned children, and extremely impoverished children from tribal areas. Beyond this, the organization conducts various humanitar-

ian activities for the destitute, including the elderly and those without shelter. When asked about the defining moment that led to his shift from a potential corporate career to dedicating himself to humanitarian service, Lohani responds with a smile, “There wasn’t any one moment as such.” Reflecting on his journey, he shares, “After finishing my schooling in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, I pursued B.Tech at Kharagpur. Following that, a year at Infosys in Bangalore preceded my journey to IIM Kolkata. My journey was primarily driven by academic success and challenges. In those days it wasn’t easy to get admission in IIM, so it was more like an academic achievement for me, but I didn’t have a clear career plan then. The allure of a corporate career waned quickly. Although I admired entrepreneurship, it wasn't my pursuit. My heart was always drawn to the humanitarian service sector.”

During his time at IIM, Lohani initiated a successful volunteer group, engaging in activities such as visiting village schools and organizing health camps. This experience reinforced his belief that people are willing to serve and make an impact if given the opportunity, propelling him further into the realm of humanitarian service. “So, I didn’t participate in the placement process at the end of my course, as my interest had shifted away from academics. Instead, I began visiting various organizations in and outside Kolkata. This exploration phase helped me understand the vast needs in the social sector, which isn’t competitive like the commercial entrepreneurial space. I realized that one doesn’t need a disruptive idea to make a difference, just the willingness to serve where there is a need. I had no grand idea; I was just driven by the desire to do something for the society. It was just the spirit of service. So, I started on a small scale with street children, children from red light areas, and other individual cases of crisis. It could be an orphaned child or single

mother who is living in very difficult circumstances. That is how Parivaar was started in West Bengal,” explain Lohani. Over the past two decades, Parivaar has metamorphosed the lives of thousands of children. In West Bengal, the organization boasts two residential institutions, accommodating around

2000 children from extremely vulnerable backgrounds. These institutions stand as the largest free residential establishments for such children in the state. In 2016, after 14 years of unwavering service in Bengal, Lohani expanded Parivaar’s reach to Madhya Pradesh. The Seva Kutirs in MP have since provided quality supplementary education and nutritious meals to over 50,000 children from impoverished Adivasi families across 15 districts. Additionally, the organization operates four residential institutions, housing approximately 1250 children from poor Adivasi families in three districts, with plans for annual scaling. Parivaar’s impact extends beyond education. Operating 97 ambulances in tribal areas across 24 districts, the organization has served more than 2.25 lakh cases in the last 30 months. Its Vision Restoration project has benefited over 5.17 lakh individuals through general examinations, medicines, and glasses, fully restoring the vision of more than 57 thousand people. Furthermore, Parivaar runs 13 Daily Mobile Health Clinics in remote and impoverished areas across seven districts, providing free medicines to over 10 lakh individuals in the last 30 months. Under Vinayak Lohani's vision-

ary leadership, the organization thrives today. Despite its remarkable growth, Lohani humbly acknowledges, “The scaling of the organization was determined by the resources and people who joined us. Growth cannot be precisely defined, as opportunities present themselves unpredictably. Our organization has evolved to meet various needs over the years, and our growth contours are loosely defined. At the start, I wasn’t sure how many children we could manage, or when we could purchase our own land even. But with commitment and long-term dedication, these interim goals became less important. The key is not to focus solely on goal-based motivation but to embrace mission-based motivation. It’s more about the journey than fixed goalposts. While goals are important for self-evaluation and organizational efficiency, they shouldn’t be the only driving factor. If things don’t happen as planned or at the expected pace, frustration can creep in. Hence, a deeper level of motivation, beyond just goals or achievements, is necessary.” True, the task at hand is not easy, so what keeps him motivated on day-to-day basis?

“Understanding and realizing one’s motivation is a continuous process. It’s important to remind oneself of why you started on this path. Challenges are part of every job, and everyone experiences stress at their workplace. In today’s fastpaced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the race and feel like you’re slipping. But these challenges shouldn’t deter you from your path. The line I chose was different, given my background, and the only chal-

lenges were to stay on this path. I never doubted the merit of this path, though I sometimes doubted my worthiness to be on it. I never regretted my choice,” reveals Lohani. inayak Lohani's dedication has earned him recognition through several awards, including the National Award for Child Welfare 2011 presented by the President of India and the Sanskriti Award 2011 from former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. However, Lohani

holds a unique perspective on awards and recognition, stating, “While it’s a common belief that awards or recognition can be beneficial, they don’t significantly impact an organization’s success. If an organization is fulfilling its promises to its stakeholders, donors, and beneficiaries, then external recognition doesn’t matter. Even a Nobel Peace Prize doesn’t necessarily impact an organization’s operations. There are many unrecognized, inspiring forces in our society, whose work is not defined by the awards or recognition they received. We need to decouple the idea of success from recognition. Success shouldn’t be based on recognition or validation from others. This mindset is prevalent in our aspirational social classes, which place a premium on success based on recognition. This attitude needs to be guarded against, especially in our sector. I feel even celebrity engagement can sometimes be problematic. If a high-networth individual is on an organization’s governing body, ordinary donors might think the organization already has ample support. While recognition and celebrity engagement might help to some extent,

they’re not crucial.” Indeed, starting from almost nothing, presently, Parivaar's initiatives stand as India's largest endeavours of their kind, addressing the needs of over 50 thousand underprivileged children and serving hundreds of thousands of impoverished tribal individuals through diverse health initiatives. In the fiscal year 2022-23, Parivaar allocated approximately Rs 76 Cr towards its various projects, boasting a dedicated workforce of 3800 individuals referred to as Sevavratees. Looking ahead to 2024, Parivaar's roadmap includes plan to establish new residential campuses in select districts in Madhya Pradesh and introduce about 200 Seva Kutirs in Alirajpur (with the lowest literacy rate in the country) and Barwani. Additionally, the organization aims to set up Mobile Clinics in two tribal districts of Chhattisgarh and initiate Seva Kutirs in Purba Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Community in Crisis/// In the heart of Surrey's bustling business district, a sense of unease has settled following a series of alarming incidents that have gripped the community. The seemingly business-as-usual surroundings of the Payal Business Centre, home to a myriad of South Asian businesses, have been marred by a recent surge in criminal activities, raising concerns among residents and entrepreneurs alike. The unsettling chain of events began with an armed robbery on November 22, 2023, at a business in the 8100 block of 128 Street within the Payal Business Centre. The Surrey RCMP swiftly responded to the incident, reporting that one person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly transported to the hospital. The suspects, making a hasty getaway in a dark-colored pickup truck, managed to evade capture. Just as the community grappled with the aftermath of the brazen daylight robbery, another blow struck the following day. In the early morning hours of November 23, 2023, shots rang out, targeting a business in the same plaza. The business, later revealed to be RK Jewellers, bore the evidence of a shooting, with bullet holes in its windows. Fortunately, the store was closed at the time, and no injuries were reported. Further, Amidst a concerning surge in violent incidents, community

A Surge in Local Crime and Safety Concerns. By Naina Grewal

We have seen a reduction in crime in Surrey over the last decade. Statistics don’t lie, crime has reduced for ten years. In 2023, our shots fired complaints were reduced 30% from 2022 and homicides were reduced in 2023 by 45% from 2022.” Brian Edwards Assistant Commissioner

TM

members, particularly those in the public eye, are grappling with a heightened sense of insecurity. Recent reports reveal targeted attacks and shootings, prompting individuals, including notable figures, to express feelings of vulnerability. Some have taken drastic measures, such as relocating to different countries, potentially in an effort to ensure personal safety. This unsettling trend raises broader questions about the overall security landscape and the impact on individuals who find themselves thrust into the spotlight. In example, a harrowing incident entails gunshots being fired near Gippy Grewal’s home, shortly after which notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi claimed responsibility. The Surrey RCMP, facing a sudden surge in criminal activities within a tight-knit community, has been working tirelessly to unravel the complexities surrounding these incidents. According to the RCMP, the incidents at Payal Business Centre are being treated as isolated events and are not believed to be part of a larger trend. The investigators are diligently examining each case independently, looking for any potential connections to other crimes that might have been committed. The Surrey RCMP assures the public that such acts of violence are relatively rare when considering the broader context of Surrey's public safety, shedding light on the reduction

in overall crime rates in Surrey over the last decade. Surrey RCMP officers respond to approximately 200,000 calls for service every year and only a very small fraction of those involve a violent act in a public space, but these are usually the investigations that make the news headlines. It is important to keep these isolated acts of violence within the context of the overall public safety picture in Surrey. Officer in Charge of Surrey RCMP Detachment, Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards shares, “We have seen a reduction in crime in Surrey over the last decade. Statistics don’t lie, crime has reduced for ten years. In 2023, our shots fired complaints were reduced 30% from 2022 and homicides were reduced in 2023 by 45% from 2022.” However, as the investigation into the recent incidents unfolds, a troubling pattern has emerged. The Surrey RACMP discloses three validated reports of extortions in Surrey, spanning from October to November 2023. The key component of these reports is that similar fact evidence exists. These extortions are happening in a remarkably similar way, indicating that one offender or group of offenders is conducting these extortions. The same fact pattern exists throughout the region in West Vancouver, White Rock, and Abbotsford and police are satisfied the same offenders are involved. There are extortions occurring in other jurisdictions of the country as well in Edmonton, Alberta and Brampton, Ontario. Again, the fact patterns are remarkably similar. According to the Surrey RCMP, there are rumors circulating that some people have paid the extortionists and not contacted the police. However, the police cannot act on rumors. The rumors need to be validated because invalidated rumors create fear. As such, the Surrey RCMP urges the community to share the message and encourage people to call the police, even if it is not specific to Surrey, as it may assist another police agency. The Surrey RCMP encourages businesses and individuals facing potential extor-

tion threats to report them promptly, not engaging with the suspect and nor sending money. In response to the rising tide of extortion cases, the Surrey RCMP has dedicated substantial resources to the investigations. Over 200 police officers, including members of the BC RCMP and other specialized units, have contributed more than 20,000 investigative hours to the cases since October. The scale of the effort underscores the gravity of the situation and the commitment of law enforcement to bring the offenders to justice. “A typical investigator works 2040 hours in a year without holidays, breaks or sickness, so that represents ten years of work on this file in a short period of twelve weeks.”, explains Assistant Commissioner Edwards. The Surrey RCMP's collaborative approach involves working closely with other jurisdictions facing similar challenges. The complexity of the investigation demands meticulous attention, with the goal of meeting the threshold tests laid out by the courts when presenting evidence to Crown prosecutors. In light of these developments, the Surrey RCMP outlined essential measures for the community's safety. Businesses are encouraged to contact their local police detachment for guidance on security measures. Additionally, victims of extortion attempts are strongly advised not to engage with the suspects and to report the incidents to the police immediately. As Surrey grapples with the aftermath of these criminal incidents, the community's resilience and cooperation with law enforcement become paramount. The Surrey RCMP emphasizes the importance of community involvement, urging residents to reach out and report any suspicious activities. In doing so, the community plays a vital role in maintaining public safety and fostering a sense of security in the face of adversity. In the wake of these troubling events, Surrey stands united, determined to overcome the challenges posed by the rise of local crime. The collaboration between the community and law enforcement becomes the linchpin in ensuring a swift and effective response to these incidents, ultimately restoring the peace that residents deserve.

woke up this way” is usually something said togue in cheek, but for many women it would be handy to pop out of bed looking perfectly made up without any of the effort. Think of the extra time for sleep.

Such is the appeal of semi-permanent make up which emerged decades ago starting with tattoo eyeliner. Since then we’ve seen microblading for brows and the fine-tuning of eyeliner options thanks to innovations in technology and improved inks. Powder ombre brows and lip blush are two recent treatments that give women more opportunities to streamline their beauty regimen without having invasive medical procedures. Unlike microblading where a manual tool draws lines of colour to mimic the look hair, powder ombre is done using a

machine creating a filled-in, soft powdery look. “They’re little pixilated dots of colour,” says Melissa Chang, owner/ educator at Vancouver’s Brow Beauty Lab (www.browbeautylab.com). Choosing one technique over the other comes down to what look the client wants to achieve—some people don’t like a filled-in look— how full or sparse the natural brow hair is and the level of oiliness of the skin.

DARPAN

TM

“If you have oilier skin it means, regardless of which technique you choose, it’s going to fade quicker.,” Chang explains “For microblading if you have oilier skin, it’s going to fade faster. Those nice, crisp lines that we draw, they don’t always heal that way on oilier skin. They tend to blend together, and they get really soft looking. You can still do it but the effect is not as nice.”

If you have no brow hair, you generally want to stick with the powder ombre technique because for those with sparse hair, the lines drawn with microblading will show the skin in between. The ombre powder technique fills in the brow area creating a more natural look. The other advantage of the powder ombre brow is that it can last up to two years in contrast to the one year for microblading. Chang says the most natural and long lasting brow treatment is the combo—which is exactly what the name suggests— combining microblading and powder ombre. An appointment typically lasts two and a half hours which begins with the client’s face being measured. Then the shape is drawn out according to the face measurements. Once the shape is approved by the client, the brow hair is cleaned up and then a numbing cream is applied to the area before the procedure starts.

The most recent brow treatment is nano brows, Chang notes, which is very similar to the micro-bladed effect, but it’s done with a machine rather than a manual tool. “It’s a really fine needle but it’s using a machine. So, for clients who have a mature skin, microblading doesn’t always work for them but nano might be a good alternative for them.” A key piece of advice, regardless of what service you opt for, is don’t shave off your brows. Chang says that they get asked that a lot by clients. “No don’t shave off your brows. We’ll groom them and make them look nice,” she says.

The lip blush treatment is what the name suggests, a flush of natural-looking colour that also gives the appearance of fuller lips. “It can be as simple as wanting to change the colour or cover up any scars, or just wanting to achieve the appearance of a fuller lip without hyaluronic injections,” says Ashley Wong, owner of Luxe Lip Studio in New Westminster, for why people would opt for a lip blush treatment (www.luxelipstudio.com) For others, it’s about correcting an obvious uneven skin tone. Wong calls it lip neutralization. It’s the same process as creating the blush colour, but different pigments are used. “If someone has melanin on their lips, then we would use colours that are the opposite to neutralize any dark tones… on their lips, giving them more of a warm appearance.” she adds that lip colour can change from sun damage or just melanin on their skin. Chang, whose studio also does lip blush, says age too can affect lip colour—either causing fading or darker spots.

“Lip Blush is similar to the powder ombre brows in that we use the same machine,” Chang says. “The process is the same. We’re going to draw the shape around your lips. We don’t overdraw. So we do have to work within your natural lips but there’s a little bit of leeway.” Wong says for the majority of people the treatment isn’t painful and that numbing cream is applied at the beginning and throughout the procedure. “I’ve even had clients doze off during the treatment.” she says.

The healing process, Wong says, is just some swelling for 24 hours with some minor scabbing for about a week. She advises that you must avoid working out, swimming, using a sauna or tanning. Lips need to be kept hydrated and suggest using Aquaphor ointment. “After scabbing the colour will start to stabilize and bloom after four to five weeks. Then around six to eight weeks is when you come back for a touch up.” she says, adding that a touch up is important because everyone heals and takes the pigment differently. If you want your lips to be a lot more full, this is not the same as lip injections, Chang notes, but that it will give you “a more youthful appearance because your lips are going to be all one colour, and as a result they will look more full. You can make them slightly more symmetrical. So in that way it will look more full but not like injections where you can really change the volume of your lips.”

Lip blush lasts for about two years and depending on the salon, prices range from $400-$1000.

New Year, New Home: Trends to Redefine Your Living Experience in

Eco-Posh Layout

2024 By Natasha D'souza

A

As we welcome a brand new year, let’s also take this opportunity to breathe fresh life into our living spaces because a cozy abode harbours more than just comfort. The global home-decor landscape is ever-evolving, and 2024 guarantees an interesting blend of styles and aesthetics that will redefine the way we imagine indoor design. Let's delve into trend forecasts that will emerge as a common language among both traditional and contemporary homes in the hood.

Biophilic Design Bliss As city residing disconnects us from nature, biophilic design is here to help us re-establish affinity towards it. This trend encourages the combination of natural elements into our homes, developing a sense of tranquility and well-being. Indoor vegetation, herb shelves and large home windows that allow passage of natural light will play a significant role in both elevating aesthetics and balancing between indoors and outdoors.

In 2024, sustainability isn’t only a buzzword; it is a layout ethos. Homeowners are expected to make a responsible shift towards green materials and designs that marry aesthetics with environmental cognizance. Reclaimed wood fixtures, recycled metal accents, and energy-efficient lighting wont just be responsible choices but elegant statements advocating the green lifestyle.

Neo-Traditional Fusion Stark minimalism is too passé. The fusion of traditional with contemporary flair is here to dominate. Grandmillennial style, as it's affectionately regarded, encourages the harmonious integration of vintage styles, fringed motifs and classic furniture with a new-age twist. It's a nod to the past with a fresh, dynamic perspective celebrating innovation and bohemian outlook to create an out-of-the-box living experience.

Artistic Moody Palettes Excuse me, neutral tones; moody colorations are taking centerstage. Deep blues, forest greens and sultry purples will cast a spell of sophistication and drama. Moody colours don't just add to the visual appeal but serve as an extension of your personality as well. Furthermore, they offer relaxed and intimate atmospheres. Consider experimenting with dark accessory walls, plush velvet furnishings, and steel accents to infuse your area with a hint of opulence.

Functional Artistry

Art Deco Encore

The era of multifunctional fixtures has dawned, aligning seamlessly with the modern-day quest for adaptable residing areas. Owners are anticipated to show an increasing propensity to investing in furnishings that does double obligation – assume sofas that remodel into beds or espresso tables with hidden garage booths. This trend is all about balancing style with practicality, making sure every piece serves a cause past aesthetics.

Channel the opulence of the Roaring Nineteen Twenties with the resurgence of Art Deco. Characterized by using geometric styles, pricey materials, and metallic accents, this movement exudes glamour and sophistication. Introduce Art Deco elements through statement lighting fixtures, geometric furnishings, and mirrored surfaces, creating a haven paying homage to a golden bygone generation.

Maximalist Manifesto Minimalism takes a backseat as maximalism steals the spotlight in 2024. More is merrier, and bold styles, colourful shades, and eclectic decor selections are celebrated. It's about breaking free from layout norms, blending patterns and textures, and developing a visually stimulating tapestry that reflects private fashion and exuberance.

Here's how Wicker defines modern living One of the most prominent trends in the home and living section is wicker, also known as rattan. Numerous Instagram and TikTok posts feature beautiful wicker trends that enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home. Frankly, you can't afford to miss out on these trends, not even when purchasing a wicker lampshade that will make a statement in your living room. Even Reese Witherspoon has wicker light-

ing in her cozy space, a glimpse of which was seen on her Instagram. The best part of this trend, though, is that it's visually pleasing without adding any bulk to your space. Artisans are pouring their creativity into making each piece unique, setting them apart from traditional wooden furniture. Let's explore some ways in which wicker can add style to your home...

Accessorise with wicker Rattan furniture can be quite pricey due to its natural origin and the craftsmanship involved in creating each unique piece. If budget constraints are preventing you from buying wicker furniture, explore rattan accessories such as lampshades, wall clocks, table lamps, wall mirrors, coasters, laundry baskets, planters, and tissue boxes. The key here is to blend rattan with other materials to make your rattan pieces stand out from the rest.

Wicker in your wardrobe No, we're not talking about clothing. That's taking it too far, we know! We're referring to rattan laptop bags, beach bags, slings, wallets, and earrings. Trust us; they provide a boho vibe and add a touch of class to your attire. Rattan bags, in particular, can complement both Western and Indian looks, making them ideal for brunch dates or holidays. Even accessories like earrings or rattan footwear can make a stylish statement.

Tips to maintain your wicker furniture: •

Regular upkeep is crucial. Begin by dusting the furniture with a soft brush or using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and debris from the woven surface. For a deeper clean, use a soft wet cloth or sponge to gently scrub the wicker. Be careful not to oversaturate the wicker, as excessive moisture can weaken it. After cleaning, rinse with clean water and allow the furniture to air dry completely.

To prevent the wicker from becoming brittle and prone to cracking, it's adviwsable to occasionally apply a thin layer of furniture wax or a specialized wicker furniture sealer.

Lastly, protect your wicker pieces from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme weather conditions by using covers or storing them indoors when not in use.

Incorporate natural colours into your furniture

TM

The key to investing in wicker furniture, such as in your living room, is to start with one piece. Avoid cluttering your space with too much wicker, as it can overwhelm the overall look of your home. For instance, if you're interested in a wicker chair, consider a statement accent chair that complements

your fabric or wooden sofas. In the bedroom, you can use wicker for the headboard of your bed. For a natural aesthetic in your outdoor seating area, go all-in with wicker chairs, warm white cushions, and a glass-topped center table.

Wicker is undoubtedly the trend to embrace right now, and it's a statement in itself. Its timeless charm and versatility make it a go-to choice for those who want to infuse their living spaces with elegance and character. In a world where individuality and sustainability are highly valued,

wicker stands out as a material that's not only fashionable but also eco-friendly. So, if you're looking to stay ahead in the world of interior design, wicker is the trend that deserves your attention and can define your unique style.

2024 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 4MATIC+ Roadster ICONIC ROADSTER EVOLUTION First arriving on the scene two years ago, the latest iteration of Mercedes-AMG’s Sportlich-Leicht (German for sporty and lightweight) 63 continues to give enthusiasts a road-going racecar experience as the legendary model has done for the last seven decades.

PICTURES CREDITS: WWW.MERCEDES-BENZ.CA

The new SL combines the sporty genes of the original SL with the driving performance typical of AMG. At the same time, it offers luxury and comfort at the absolute top level. This combination is unique in the sports car segment and is also reflected in the interior where the highest levels of comfort and quality meet the right helping of sportiness,” says Philipp Schiemer, Mercedes-AMG GmbH board chairman, in a news release.

The high-quality combination of analogue world and state-of-the-art digital equipment makes it clear that the new SL is the rebirth of an icon for the modern era."

An extended shark-like hood, long wheelbase and short overhangs gives the vehicle an unmistakable exotic look, especially on a sunny day with the power soft top stowed (which is interestingly done so digitally via the central display). The stunning bespoke MANUFAKTUR Monza Grey MAGNO matte paint (+ $4,225) on the press loaner only added to the alluring appearance. The exactly 14 slats found on the AMG-specific grille is a callback to the 1952 300 SL.

Vents are integrated into the fixed headrests, dubbed the AIRSCARF system, circulating warm air around the head and neck area when the roof is down making fall and/or nighttime cruising even more enjoyable. Surprisingly what’s missing is some sort of a wind blocker behind the rear seats to quiet things down and keep hair from whipping around on the freeway. A burly hand-crafted 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine propels the car, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, producing 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque capable of achieving a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 3.6 seconds. The sound emitted out of the quad trapezoidal tailpipes is simply intoxicating making the fuel consumption of 21.4 L/100 km I experienced over a week of city driving (almost) worth it. Sitting on AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL, the suspension features hydraulic anti-roll bars that automatically compensate for body roll in turns keeping the SL level during high-speed turns. The ride is on the stiffer side and is a bit noisy while going over bumps and uneven bits of pavement. The composite brake discs are lighter and boast shorter stopping distances than before but are also quite squealy at times. Variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is standard as is active rear-axle steering, the latter improving agility, steering effort and turning radius allowing the long vehicle to easily manoeuvre around the city.

FOR THE REAL SPEED JUNKIES, MERCEDES-AMG IS INTRODUCING A RANGE-TOPPING E PERFORMANCE PLUG-IN HYBRID MODEL PUSHING OUT AN INCREDIBLE 805 HORSEPOWER AND 1,047 LB-FT OF TORQUE AS THE BRAND TRANSITIONS TO FULL ELECTRIFICATION. STAY TUNED.

2024 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X RUGGED MID-SIZE PICKUP

By Benjamin Yong

PICTURES CREDITS: USA.NISSANNEWS.COM

Launched as an all-new redesign for 2022, the Nissan Frontier is in a carry-over year and particularly in PRO-4X form remains a great choice for both work and play. Though the full-length, fully-boxed frame is essentially unchanged from 2005, it’s a solid and proven base to build upon and almost everything else around it is fresh. Somewhat resembling a baby Titan, the mid-size pickup’s nose is similarly dominated by a massive grille and blocky headlights housing distinctive LED signature lighting. The entire vehicle boasts an upright stance lending a powerful appearance, and adding to the effect are athletic fenders and matching notched taillights.

PRO-4X models get a bunch of bonus functional and cool accessories such as silver skid plates protecting the engine, oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank; wheel arch flares; 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires; and Lava Red emblem and tow hooks, among others. Hiding underneath the body work is an electronic locking differential and Bilstein offroad shock absorbers. Measuring over six-feet tall, it’s a good idea to double-check height restrictions before entering certain parking garages.

Darpan reviewed the Crew Cab variant packing full-size doors and a five-foot bed, and while not as sporty looking as the King Cab the proper second-row bench makes fitting a child seat much easier than using the flip-down cushions found in the latter. Our media vehicle was coated in desert-racing-ready Baja Glass paint that contrasted nicely against the black and red exterior details, rear privacy glass and available TM factory-sprayed bedliner. Speaking of which, the illuminated bed has a bunch of useful enhancements letting people secure their stuff in a multitude of ways. Four fixed tie-down hooks allow different-sized gear to be strapped in, and the Utili-track Channel System comprised of three crosssection rails with built-in sliding cleats accommodates even oddly shaped cargo. Stepping inside the cabin occupants will notice premium upholstery and additional lava red accenting in the stitching, around the instrument cluster gauge rings and various trim pieces. Some welcome touches include the faux-leatherwrapped centre console, leather steering wheel, manual sliding rear window accessible from the driver’s seat and big nine-inch colour touchscreen display. The NissanConnect infotainment isn’t the best in the industry but is certainly better than many other examples out there, offering a good mixture of virtual and physical controls as well as integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Another useful digital feature is the excellent Around View Monitor 360-degree camera. The first automaker to showcase such technology back in 2007, it’s now upgraded and highlights moving objects on screen, self-activating at low speeds when the two-speed electronic transfer case is set to 4-LO so as to help avoid scratches and dents on the trail. Under the Frontier’s hood is a 3.8-litre V6 mill, producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, originally introduced in the 2020 version of the truck. The motor feels a bit clunky but performance is quite good whether commuting about town or off the beaten path, and the ride is fairly quiet thanks to the installation of extra insulation, improved rear carpeting and acoustic laminated glass in the front doors. A new nine-speed automatic transmission replaces the outgoing five-speed unit.

2024 Volvo V90 CC LUXURY SCANDINAVIAN WAGON

By Benjamin Yong

European auto manufacturers are almost singlehandedly keeping the station wagon dream alive here in the west, and the Volvo V90 Cross Country is among the best currently offered. The vehicle returns for the 2024 model year virtually unchanged since the last refresh three years ago.

PICTURES CREDITS: WWW.VOLVO.COM

Despite a 60-millimeter taller ride height and black cladding applied under the bumpers, side sills and over the fender arches, our Ultimatetrim press loaner still looked as sleek as ever thanks to a low greenhouse, curvy body and streamlined vertical-slatted grille. The silver front skidplate, optional 21-inch 7-Open Spoke Diamond-cut wheels (+ $1,475) and Thor’s Hammer T-shaped signature daytime running lights provided icing on the cake.

Is it even possible for Volvo to make a bad interior? The Nappa leather upholstery is buttery soft and the beautiful hits of natural open-pore wood around the space feel great to the touch. And though I’ve previously seen the Swedish Orrefors crystal gear shifter many times, the piece is still a stunner.

Some other highlights are the intricate brushed alloy speaker covers, two-tone heated leather steering wheel, big panoramic sunroof and polished knurled dials and knobs. Legroom is plentiful in both the first and second rows, and a child seat is easily accommodated. The 714 litres of space in the cargo area was enough to fit several pieces of check-in and carry-on luggage, and folding the back bench expands the total storage capacity to 1,526 litres.

The nine-inch portrait-oriented tablet display is similar to the units found in related products under the Volvo and Polestar umbrella and is powered by Google Built-in infotainment, so apps like Google Maps are natively installed without needing a connected smartphone to run. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto continue to be supported as well. An impressive 12.3-inch screen ahead of the driver serves as a fully digital instrument cluster replacing traditional analog gauges.

2023 Polestar 2

UPSCALE ZERO EMISSIONS MOTORING WI T H A SCANDINAVIAN T WIS T

PICTURES CREDITS: WWW.MEDIA.POLESTAR.COM

Hitting the scene in 2020, the Polestar 2 (P2) produced by Volvo’s performance subsidiary Polestar is one of the more recent EV players on the market. Now three years in, the five-door — based on the same Compact Modular Architecture platform as the XC40 Recharge — continues to offer a viable alternative to competitors such as the Tesla Model 3. While a familiar overall Swedish design aesthetic exists, the vehicle, which serves as a pure electric follow-up to the 619 horsepower Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid sports coupe, really stands out amongst other zero-emissions brethren. From the stealthy badging and Knight Rider-like animated LED taillight strip on the outside to the barely-there physical controls and hollow shifter on the inside, it’s definitely something unique.

The fastback shape essentially combines the styling of a sedan, the practicality of a hatchback and the generous headroom of a crossover. Features including the standard aerodynamic 19-inch 5 V-spoke wheels, Volvo-inspired Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights and minimalistic body panels provides a premium touch.

Similarly, the interior possesses a clean appearance devoid of extraneous trim elements and buttons. Even a start button is missing, because simply sitting in the seat with the fob nearby and stepping on the brake pedal activates the car. The only downside to this is an accessory mode is effectively missing. In addition, the gear knob doesn’t have a selector button either and an accidental tap can put the position to neutral by accident while in operation. A 12.3-inch floating Google-based infotainment display serves as the command centre, and the vegan upholstery throughout looks pleasant and feels nice. Ash wood and leather seats are optional. New for 2023 is Apple CarPlay support. Claims of the raw acceleration of battery-powered vehicles are not exaggerated, particularly here where there is a pair of high output electric motors generating a combined 487 lb-ft of instant-on torque. One is installed at both the front and rear axles creating all-wheel drive, meaning traction was never compromised as I blasted along a rain-soaked backcountry corridor after giving a quick jab of the throttle. A Performance Pack software upgrade is available for speed junkies upping the horsepower from 408 to 476 and torque to 502 lb-ft. Range anxiety sufferers rejoice: a large 78 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery yields a travel distance of over 400 kilometres. Taking the car out for an afternoon, I barely made a dent in the power level largely due to the common EV one-pedal drive function. Turning it on results in automatic braking anytime your foot is lifted off the accelerator pedal, and the resulting created kinetic energy is captured and used to recharge the battery.

NOW YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING, “HOW DO I GET ONE?” POLESTAR HAS JUST OPENED A PERMANENT VANCOUVER BRICK-AND-MORTAR LOCATION (2211 BURRARD ST.), ALONGSIDE SEVERAL MORE GLOBALLY, WHERE VISITORS CAN LEARN ABOUT THE BRAND AND TEST DRIVE MODELS IN A PRESSURE-FREE ENVIRONMENT. Name: Dr. Rishi Singh Working at: Innivec Designation: Vice President, Academics Spouse Name: Shriya Rishi Working at: Fraser Valley Real Estate Board Designation: Head of HR & Safety Children Name: Anhad singh Age: 19 Occupation: Simon Fraser University, BBA first year student Name: suvi cour Age: 14 Occupation: Grade 8 student Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada?

During my late teens, this idea was first shared by my father Ravindar Singh Somi’s friend, Eric, who lived on the Vancouver Island. Importantly, this is one of the few places on our blue planet that offers the scenic views of the majestic mountains as well as the serene Pacific Ocean, while also allowing newcomers to maintain their culture while adding to the country’s tapestry of multi-culturalism.

For the first few weeks, we stayed with some family members – and then moved into our own house.

What difficulties/challenges did you face when you and your family moved here?

We arrived in Canada in the summer of 2006, when our son was 18 months old.

Like all immigrants, the foremost challenge was to find a job in my field. As I was coming from a very prestigious role in London, UK and earlier in the India’s capital city working with the stalwarts of our nation, it took some time getting accustomed to dynamics of this city – especially as Vancouver was not a knowledge-based economy at that time, and vacancies in post-secondary institutions were few and far between.

What were your first impressions of Canada?

How long did it take to get used to the people, weather, or the surrounding?

Which year did you migrate?

When I first arrived in Vancouver in 1999, I was invited to be a part of a program at the University British Columbia; it was then that I decided to settle in the land where the ocean meets the mountains. Along with the welcoming members of the Indigenous community I met, the streets of UBC were breathtakingly beautiful at that time of the year – lined with Cherry blossoms all around. My first impression of this land was that it is filled with natural beauty, and with beautiful and kind people.

Where did you stay when you reached Canada? Hotel, relative or friends place?

As we were arriving from London in the United Kingdom, we really liked the weather and the people! The surroundings were beautiful, inviting and less crowded – all pluses. Our commute to enjoy a savoury samosa used to be a good two hours from our Central London home to Southall – and in Surrey, it was reduced to less than 15 minutes – and who could complaint about that?

How was your experience getting a job here? Was it easy or troublesome?

We all know that securing a job is one of the biggest challenges all immigrants face, and it was no different for us. Even though my recent educa-

tion and experience were from United Kingdom, it took some time to find a foothold in the labour market. Fortunately, I got a break as the Editor in Lower Mainland’s leading South-Asian lifestyle magazine and the rest, as they say, is history.

Where were you working before moving to Canada? As what? Before moving to Canada, I was a researcher at Control Risks, a global specialist risk consultancy that provides the insight and intelligence to multinational organizations.

What do you like most about this country? Like – one of the most beautiful, serene, ethical and giving nations.

How do you see your future in Canada I see a bright future ahead for myself while playing a leadership role serving the larger community.

How has your overall journey in Canada been so far My overall journey has been very pleasant and rewarding; it is a very giving country that values its citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Biggest obstacle faced so far in Canada: It was to engage with knowledge-based professions, as compared to a city like London, England.

Advice for immigrants:

Make sure to learn about the country before making the big move! Canada is a very giving land filled with generous and thoughtful people.

Resolutions made for yourself or family: 1.To work closely with Indigenous communities and serve more people 2.To travel more across the country, to see and learn more of Canada.
