Concept drawings displayed of options for Darlington Indoor Market redevelopment Concept drawings have been put on display showing the improvements and developments that could be made to Darlington’s Indoor Market, with the town’s residents, traders and businesses asked to provide their views of the plans.
“Really exciting proposals” that could “take things to a different level”
What forms could the improvements take?
“We are now ready to take things to a different level and unveil to local people our ambitious plans for this wonderful building.
There are two options for the proposals that would see the historic market restored to its former glory and transformed into a modern destination for leisure and retail. The first option would entail MAM (Darlington) Ltd investing £2 million in improvement work including essential engineering and maintenance, the relocation and reopening of public toilet facilities, internal improvements to the stall design and layout, and new lighting and flooring. It is as part of this first option that a new retail space would also be created to incorporate a specialist ‘Market Republic’, featuring local suppliers selling fresh food, local produce and quality retail items. Meanwhile, the upper mezzanine floor would have small offices added to it to encourage the creation of businesses in the town. There is, however, also a second option that would include all of the investment described in the first option, together with a full-length winter garden feature facing out onto the Market Square. Floor to ceiling heritage glazing would also be incorporated into the winter garden to create a new expanded indoor area for retail, leisure and community events. This scheme would also involve the Covered Market becoming a more integral part of the Market Square, connecting it to outdoor events. Additional funds of about £1.5 million would be required for the second option, bringing the total to around £3.5 million.
MAM (Darlington) Ltd director Jonathan Owen commented: “For the past year, much of our work has been behind the scenes.
“We are working with Darlington Borough Council to deliver improvements to the market whilst remaining sensitive to the history and heritage of the building. “Over time, shoppers will see improved lighting, better facilities and a new approach to market shopping.” Ian Williams, director for economic growth and neighbourhood services at Darlington Borough Council, said: “These are really exciting proposals and we are keen to hear from residents which option they prefer. “Option 1 will see welcome and much needed improvements; whilst Option 2 will see the covered market transformed into a centrepiece asset in our regeneration plans for the town centre – a wow factor for the town that will draw people in from far and wide.” Explaining that the second option would require more investment, he said that residents needed to ask themselves: “Do they want improvements to the market, or do they want to see more radical changes that will future-proof it for generations to come whilst still retaining what is unique and special about the building and the covered market as a shopping and leisure concept?” He continued: “I want as many people to get involved as possible. Public opinion will help inform the council’s decision whether to opt for the extra investment or not.” Display boards showing both options can now be found in the Market Hall, with “opinion boxes” enabling people to post their views. Darlington and Middlesbrough academy trusts to merge in “attractive” deal Two North East trusts each presiding over multiple academies have revealed that they are set to merge. As the merger takes effect, seven schools, 4,000 children and 600 staff across Darlington and Middlesbrough will be brought under the same umbrella of a single, enlarged trust.
Mike Butler, chief executive of The Education Village Academy Trust, enthused: “We have had a close relationship with Endeavour for a long time, which has been to mutual benefit. When I see the amazing work being produced by their pupils, I can’t wait for us to work even more closely.
The two trusts preparing to merge are The Education Village Academy Trust, which oversees five schools in Darlington, and Endeavour Academies, which is responsible for two Middlesbrough schools. The new, enlarged trust will be called the Endeavour Schools and Academies Trust (ESAT).
“The new arrangement would be a twin hub model, ensuring that local needs continue to be met locally. “With five good schools, including two offering specialist provision, and two others which are rapidly improving, the emboldened trust would be more attractive still to anyone else looking to join a successful MAT.”
The five participating Darlington schools are Beaumont Hill Academy, Gurney Pease Academy, Haughton Academy, Marchbank Free School and Springfield Academy. Those schools will join the Middlesbroughbased Archibald Primary School and Macmillan Academy in the new trust.
Phil Latham, Endeavour Academies chief executive, remarked: “EVAT and Endeavour have worked together for a number of years and merging formally is a logical extension of the shared practice currently being developed across the two trusts.”
That trust will provide primary, secondary, post-16 and special education as a result of the formal merger - which, according to bosses, is intended to combine governance, leadership and teaching expertise to provide the highest possible standard of education to children.
“As the system of MATs develops, it is clear that larger trusts will be able to provide a greater range of opportunities for staff and students. We are excited about the prospect of working together and extending our partnership further.”
The deal, which is also aimed at improving financial efficiency, is the culmination of three years of collaboration between several of the schools on projects in English, maths and leadership development often delivered via the Macmillan Teaching School Alliance.
It is hoped that ESAT will begin operating on September 1, 2019. However, a letter to parents at affected schools has revealed that no school names, logos or uniforms will be changed as a result of the merger, which is aimed at sharing best practice rather than diluting the identity of any of the schools.
Despite the launch of a four-week consultation on the new merger, bosses have said that the merger will not lead to any job losses. 18

Government praise for Middleton St George school rated among the best three per cent in England Staff and pupils at an academy near Darlington have been saluted by the Government for their sterling work in making the school one of the top three per cent nationally for student progress.
“Thank you for producing such high standards through your hard work and professionalism, and congratulations again to you and your staff for all you have achieved.”
In a letter addressed to the headteacher at St George’s Church of England Academy in Middleton St George, the Education Secretary and Minister of State for School Standards congratulated her on the success of the school that has seen it become one of the highest-ranked sites in England for student progress in reading, writing and mathematics.
A truly ‘outstanding’ school
“Thank you for producing such high standards” The letter from Damian Hinds MP and Nick Gibb MP arrived in the post in February, to the delight of staff and the about 380 pupils aged three to 11 who attend the school. Mr Hinds and Mr Gibb stated in the letter: “Your school’s results show progress scores of 5.0, 3.6 and 5.0 in English reading, writing and mathematics respectively. “This means that in terms of the progress your pupils make between Key Stage 1 and the end of Key Stage 2, your school is amongst the top three per cent of schools in England. “We want to equip every child with the fluency in reading, writing and mathematics necessary to prepare them for a successful secondary education and beyond, and your school has provided this.

The school’s current purpose-built premises were opened in 2006 as a replacement for the original turn-of-the-century building on the same site that was gutted by fire damage in February 2003. St George’s is a faith school in the Sage MultiAcademy Trust, and was rated ‘outstanding’ in 2015 by the Church of England Education Office Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools. Headteacher at St George’s, Janine Gleeson, commented: “We were thrilled to receive a letter from the Secretary of State for Education and the Minister of State for School Standards informing us that our school was amongst the top three per cent of schools in England. “Staff and children were filled with pride when they received the accolade, which celebrates all their hard work, dedication and fantastic achievement. “St George’s Church of England Academy is a school which prides itself on its strong family ethos, providing a broad and balanced curriculum for all within its care and it is lovely to be recognised nationally.”

The seventh annual Darlington Arts Festival takes place from 17-20 May 2019. This multi-faceted showcase presents an array of arts available in Darlington. It is an opportunity for organisations and individuals to promote their activities, and it is an opportunity for audiences to discover something new – with the theme ‘Follow Your Art’. The festival includes various types of arts, from exciting new music with the Noisy Daughters vinyl launch at Voodoo Café, to talented young players at the Darlington Piano Society recital, top-class New Orleans jazz, visual arts, children’s theatre, the dance festival, and potentially discovering the next comedy genius at Belly Giggles workshop. A Conversation with...
Mark McGrath Mark McGrath is the General Manager of The George Piercebridge. Mark has worked in the hospitality industry for 23 years and has been a great asset to The George for nearly 2 years. Below we asked Mark about his experience, how he got to where he is today and the secrets behind The George. How long have you worked in the hotel industry, and when did you start working at The George? I have worked in hospitality for 23 years, starting as a glass collector in nightclubs at 17, before moving onto bar staff and cellarman roles. Then at 19 years old I moved into hotel bar staff roles, working most front-of-house positions up to General Manager level; the position I’ve held at The George since 1st November 2017
What are guests typically most surprised by when they stay at the hotel? I would have to say the variety of things to do at the hotel and the surrounding area. The George has wonderful dining and drinking, great service and beautiful areas to enjoy; whether it be in the recently refurbished bar and lounge areas or on the riverbank itself.
What do you enjoy most about your job? The variety of people I get to meet on a daily basis – everything from quick lunches to amazing events.
There are so many bars and restaurants in Darlington, what makes the restaurant at The George such a great place to dine? We have an amazing kitchen team led by our Head Chef, Ory Vanes. Ory has developed his menus over the last sixteen months to complement the style, history and location of The George. We have fantastic traditional dishes such as steak and ale pie, ale battered cod and hand cut chips alongside more elevated dishes like beef two-ways (freestanding cottage pie, slow braised featherblade of beef, wilted spinach, red wine jus) and pan seared lamb rump with dauphinoise potatoes, and roasted baby root vegetables. This in addition to a choice of fabulous starters and desserts; sticky toffee pudding, date puree, brandy basket, toffee –crumb and vanilla ice cream is my particular favourite. I know I may be a little biased but I do think the Sunday lunch at the George is one of, if not the best in the area.
What is your fondest memory of working at The George so far? Being able to share the history and stories The George has to tell. In a sentence or two, why should someone stay at The George when they visit the area? What makes the hotel so special and what is there to do nearby? The history of The George really does tell a story through the ages. The building and grounds has connections with Roman settlements, Civil War battles and even a highwayman or two. Also, it is the home of the grandfather clock that inspired the Henry Clay Work song ‘Grandfather’s Clock’ (which was later recorded by none other than Johnny Cash). Piercebridge is home to the remains of a Roman fort and a Roman bridge. Several great walking routes in the area take you past The George, or into The George for a quick pint! Within ten miles of the hotel there are ten museums, three theatres, two castles and two National Trust sites - you’ll need to stay for a week just to take everything in. And within half an hour’s drive we have Darlington, Richmond and Durham for shopping and some amazing history. With so much history in the building, are there any interesting stories about The George that the average visitor wouldn’t know? We have a display of Roman artefacts that have all been retrieved from the River Tees riverbed on the grounds of the George. On the 1st December 1642 Piercebridge was the site of a civil war battle between the Royalists and Parliamentarians. We still have a priest hole allegedly used by Dick Turpin on occasion. The list goes on and on…

What makes The George the ideal venue for a wedding? Location, location, location. Marry this with great food and service and it’s a match made in heaven. What do you enjoy most about hosting weddings at the hotel? The atmosphere each wedding brings. Everyone at the wedding is there to enjoy themselves, and it is our job to make sure this happens. Seeing two people have a day they will never forgot always brings a rosy glow to the team. We know you hold plenty of weddings at the hotel, what is the most unusual turn events you have seen at a wedding party? Too many to list! Over the thousands of events I’ve worked there is always something unique about each one. From alpaca ring bearers, to brides arriving in helicopters, to grooms fainting during speeches… there’s always something to remember.

You have visitors coming all the time, what sort of atmosphere do you try to create for them in the bar and restaurant? We work hard on making sure everyone who walks through our doors is made to feel welcome. A relaxed style of service, attentive but not intrusive, and a friendly team create a great feeling at The George. With several areas to drink and dine we are able to tailor experiences to guest expectations. Our Farmhouse bar and dining is more relaxed, the Riverview Restaurant works well for occasion meals, and with the lounge and snug a fantastic place to bring the dog and have a pint or 2 we have something for everyone.
With so much history in the building, how does this influence the new aesthetic as the interior is refurbished? Our owners were very conscious when investing in the refurbishment and development of The George that the stories and history of the building had to be retained. I believe that the finished work complements the area and style of a 15th century building. All the open fires have been retained, plus the beams throughout the bar and lounge area, and flagstone flooring in the Farmhouse dining area. The refurbishments are about showing that this amazing building is loved, and we want all our guests to feel the same.

Village near Darlington primed for further development A village that has already seen wholesale development in recent years may be about to receive an additional 160 homes, to the concern of existing residents. Gladman Developments has submitted an outline planning application to construct the houses on land west of The Greenway in Middleton St George. The company has said that the development could potentially offer homes for more than 350 people, adding that it will also offer 20 per cent of the site for affordable housing. Gladman also stated that the development was expected to support about 150 construction jobs over a three-year period. However, residents have been left frustrated by the application, having already fought to halt numerous developments in the area. Only in March, local people were celebrating the withdrawal of controversial proposals to build 280 dwellings in Middleton St George. Fears voiced about the potential impact of more housing Councillor Doris Jones, who had previously expressed concerns that the village was becoming a town, said there were still applications approved or in the pipeline to build nearly 2,000 homes in the locality. She commented: “With the Local Plan nearing
completion, we have been able to work on our own Neighbourhood Plan which will be a great help in stopping all of these developments. “Previously, we were unable to show that there was no need for all of these extra houses but that position has changed now that the borough council’s local plan has more legal weight. “We still have a lot of houses coming onboard so it is really important that we continue to keep an eye on the detailed planning applications so that we can get the best results for the area.” Darlington Friends of the Earth planning advisor David Phillips said he was worried about the potential impact of the development in terms of a greater number of car journeys, the deterioration of air quality in the locality and disturbance to nearby nature reserves. He said: “This development proposal needs to be sympathetic to the existing wildlife and their habitat and promote its longevity. “Wildlife should be encouraged within any proposed development, such as bat and swift nest boxes, hedgehog highways, newt ponds, fruit trees, and planting.” Cllr Jones had previously claimed that Middleton St George had “reached saturation point – it is no longer a small village, it is now a small town. “There are plenty of brownfield sites that would be suitable.”

New potato, spinach and
goats’ cheese frittata Ingredients. • 2 tbsp olive oil • 400g/1oz new potatoes, roughly chopped • 1 large red onion, finely chopped • 8 large free-range eggs • 100ml single cream • 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg • handful mint leaves, finely chopped • 150g spinach, roughly chopped • 120g goats’ cheese, roughly chopped • 12 sage leaves • salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method.
Add the garlic to the pan and cook for 2 minutes, then toss in the spinach and sauté until it begins to wilt. FILM REVIEW:
PET SEMATARY It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that the 2019 remake of Pet Sematary is a frightening experience to watch. Created by the macabre mind of none other than Stephen King, it contains all the elements of natural fear and supernatural horror that make his novels timelessly terrifying. Set in rural Maine (the setting for an entire bookcase of King’s literary work), Dr Louis Creed has decided to move his family from busy Boston in order to spend more time at home. In tow are his wife Rachel, children Ellie and Gage and cat Church, who soon find themselves living close to a well-populated, poorly spelt pet sematary. Within days, Louis is haunted by the vision of a patient he was unable to save, soon after the move, while his wife begins to hear her long-dead sister shuffling around in their new home. Meanwhile, young Ellie has befriended their nearest neighbour, Jud (John Lithgow), and poor Church has been knocked down by a lorry, close to the family home. As has been tradition for generations, Jud (who has much to answer for in this film) advises Louis to bury his beloved pet in the local semetary, but later leads him further afield to an even more ancient burial ground. The very next morning, Church suddenly appears back at the house; doting, dishevelled, and with a little more devil in him than usual.
So, when Ellie is also tragically killed in a similar accident, Louis has a horrific choice on his already blood-stained hands – to let his daughter rest, or risk bringing her back, but different. This is where King’s writing has always been at its best; combining deeply emotional dilemmas with disturbing, supernatural fantasy. Unfortunately, this is where Pet Sematary starts to fail. From the outset, you already know that these events will unfold, and Jud’s explanation for bringing the family cat back to life, triggering the horrors that follow, is explained weakly, at best. Alongside the constant sense of dread is the feeling that this film has been cut to fit the shorter running time typical of the genre. You never quite feel that the educated ‘Dr’ Creed has any problem suddenly accepting the supernatural, and Rachel’s memories of her sister (one of the most terrifying elements of the movie) are ultimately irrelevant to the narrative. Despite this, however, the film does deliver on what it was made for – suspense and frequent scares dominate from the start of the film, and don’t subside until the end credits. For this alone, it is one of the standout horror movies of the year so far (and earns an extra star simply for nail-biting terror), but its flaws will probably stop it from becoming a genuine genre classic.
