Local domestic abuse charity selected to receive prestigious award from top foundation Local charity, Family Help Darlington, has been chosen to receive a Weston Charity Award. The prize will see the charity receive funding and strategic support aimed at helping it support even more women and children escape physical and emotional abuse. Family Help Darlington provides safe, temporary accommodation for women and children from all over the UK. In addition, they offer a 24-hour support service, helpline and programmes aimed at helping women build awareness, self-esteem and confidence to move on and start their lives again. The Weston Charity Award will help Family Help Darlington to develop sustainable funding streams, strengthen its leadership skills, and understand how to cope with the changing external environment, such as policy changes, the increasingly complex needs of victims of domestic abuse, and new regulatory responsibilities.

At the same time, we have seen the demand for our services and the complex needs of our clients continue to grow. Darlington have appointed a new chief executive as they continue preparations for the new season. Quakers have appointed 52 year old David Johnston, who has held senior management positions at several blue chip companies, including Thorns of Spennymoor and the British Airports Authority. He is also a Darlington fan, having started watching Quakers during the title winning years of 1990 and 1991, when they won the GM Vauxhall Conference and Fourth Division. He will be a very useful acquisition for Quakers, as they develop their strategies for what will be a very competitive season in the Vanarama National League North. “One of my aims will be to provide stability in the boardroom,” he said. “We must be as stable off the field as we are on it. We must have a corporate diligence that the fans trust and respect, plus we must have a business network to attract sponsorship and investment.
“I’m going to use my network of contacts to try and bring in some investment, and I’ve got several meetings arranged. “I’ve operated at board level for the last 20 years, and I hope to bring some of my experience to the club.” Quakers’ league fixtures for the 2017-18 season will be announced soon, with the first game due to be played on Saturday 5th August. The first pre season friendly is at Shildon on Saturday 8th July. Blackwell Meadows was also the start of the penultimate leg of Jeff Stelling’s March for Men on 15th July. The Sky Sports presenter started in Darlington, and accompanied by around 50 others, walked from the rugby club to Hartlepool via Middlesbrough.

Next stop...the Olympics! You may recall the story I told in a recent issue of Darlington Monthly, of having been scared to swim since the moment at five years old when I was thrown into water, as well as another scary episode in my early 30s when I was pushed into deep water and had to be dragged out and resuscitated. There’s not too many people who wouldn’t be frightened of water after such experiences, and my own fear lasted until very recently. What made the big difference was my decision to sign up for longstanding repulsion at the idea of even taking a swimming lessons at the Darlington-based Swim shower, it represents a massive achievement. I can’t believe I can now swim and enjoying the water. Buddies academy. The academy was set up by Double Commonwealth champion swimmer Chris Cook, and while its services are normally geared towards much younger swimmers of between three and 11 years old, I was welcomed with open arms and have made amazing progress so far. As a matter of fact, I recently embarked on my fifth lesson at the academy and swam 15 metres, even venturing into the deep end. While that may sound mundane for some of you, for someone with my 8

DUMFRIES, Dumfries and Galloway
On the way to Glasgow I stopped over one night in Dumfries, a Scottish town which is a suitable day trip from the northeast, or a stopover for a short break. I enjoyed a sunny morning crossing the Tyne Valley line to Carlisle, where the station is undergoing a major roof refurbishment. I joined the slow train to Glasgow which entered Scotland at Gretna Green and arrived in Dumfries in time for lunch. On the recommendation of Fiona Forsythe, Community Rail Officer for the Newcastle to Carlisle line, I went to “The Usual Place”, a friendly community café which provides training for people with learning difficulties. There were many fillings for rolls, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and, being in Scotland, I plumped for sugar-free Irn Bru and haggis. But that might be a bit dry, so I opted for brie and cranberry with haggis which raised not an eyebrow and proved very tasty. After lunch I went for a walk on the disused railway line that used to go to Stranraer (now you have to go up to Kilmarnock and then south), and enjoyed the fine network of footpaths that run through the town. I ended up at the Old Bridge House Museum on the south side of the Devorgilla Bridge, then the Robert Burns Centre and the town museum, all free. The latter includes a Camera Obscura for which there is a charge of £3.20. I climbed to the top of the tower for a demonstration for just three of us and saw Dumfries laid out – in colour of course – on a giant white saucer. Back to the hotel to check in at the Station Hotel. I asked very nicely if I could get up inside the lantern which tops the building but was politely refused. A shame, since I am sure many people would enjoy the view. But not of the camera obscura, which was obscured by trees. I had to content myself

with the view over the station from the third floor, room 43, a pleasant double in the roof eaves. Amazingly I managed never to bump my head. As it happened I had arrived in the midst of the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival so there was plenty of available entertainment. I was tempted by the ghost walk starting at St. Michael’s Church, where the mausoleum of Robbie Burns is. But on a summer night at 19.00 it didn’t seem particularly spooky and I went to the film theatre instead. But I could have gone to the Theatre Royal or the single screen Odeon cinema. I was under the impression that there were no one screen Odeons left, and this one shares a building with the Gala bingo which uses the former stalls, and the cinema uses the former circle. Robert Burns is never far away in Dumfries, and I even discovered a volume of his English verses which are easier on the southern ear. The house where he died in 1796 at the age of 37 is still standing and can be visited, also for free. This simple red sandstone house gives a fascinating view of how the poet and his family lived and is now a place of pilgrimage for Burns enthusiasts from around the world. Dumfries town centre is mostly pedestrianised and easy to walk around. The river occasionally bursts its banks and the buses have to move stops above the flood plain, but the railway line is on higher ground and a reliable way to reach this interesting town. Employment Round Up ‘Summer time and the living is easy…’ ... or so the song goes, but not according to latest research, which suggests British workers lose almost 3 billion a year in unpaid wages. In an interim report Middlesex University identified 23,000 occasions where workers were underpaid wages and holiday pay. The study also found that one in 12 workers were not receiving payslips, and one in 20 received no paid holidays whatsoever – both of which breach the UK’s employment laws. Other studies have suggested British workers’ wages are becoming increasingly squeezed; worryingly, the outlook remains bleak with employers not predicting a hike in wages any time soon.With rising inflation figures published earlier this month, Brexit negotiations and the fall out from the general election, wages may rise by as little as 1%; the lowest pay growth expectations for three and a half years. A six-week summer-safety campaign will highlight a number of important ways to keep safe, and is aimed at both young people and adults in Darlington.
“There are simple ways to protect yourself as well, for example avoid putting yourself in a vulnerable position by drinking too much alcohol and being unable to get home safely. This campaign really has something for everyone.”
This includes guidance and hints and tips to ensure young people are contactable when they are out and about with friends. The police and other professionals want to encourage all parents and guardians to make sure they know where their children are, and to check who they’re with, to reduce the risk of them being put into vulnerable situations.

July’s Recipe Smoked mackerel pate and cucumber sandwich The refreshing crunch of cucumber and a dollop of cooling yoghurt are the ideal foils for the rich, smoky fish. Preparation time less than 30 mins | no cooking required | Serves 4-6
Ingredients 2 smoked mackerel fillets, skin and pin bones removed 2 tbsp Greek-style yoghurt 2 tbsp creamed horseradish ½ lemon, juice only salt and freshly ground black pepper butter, for spreading 4-6 slices white bread ½ cucumber, peeled, seeds removed, finely sliced
Method. Flake the mackerel fillets into the bowl of a food processor. Add the yoghurt, horseradish and lemon juice and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pulse gently to a rough paste. 5 ways of Growing your child’s Emotional Control As adults most of us know our emotional triggers and what we need to do to calm ourselves down and or relieve our frustrations. As a child this can be difficult journey and cause disruption and upset for the whole family as well as cause a lack of self-confidence in the child, damage relationships and development. Emotion Faces First your child needs to identify their emotions. Get creative with your child and create emotion faces. You could use paper and colours, paper plates, wooden spoons. Get messy and share your own facial expressions with the child to motivate their artistic streak, thoughts and conversation. Keep these faces available for view and discussion. Your child may even find it a release to point to the faces they identify with when feeling emotional. Emotion Ball When your child is aware and can identify their negative feelings offer your child a way to release it with play dough, squeezing, pulling and pounding. There are many stress balls available to buy that can help too. You can even have fun making your own. Emotion Pocket /box/ bag Create a feelings box. The faces created could be kept here. Cut pictures from magazines of different faces 16
showing emotion. A mirror. Note paper and writing tools to write down their thoughts. A zipped pencil case to pop the written feeling or worry away in. Textured materials and cushions. Story books about feeling and emotion. Emotion activities Look at activities together and note the activities that your child can do when they are feeling upset, sad or angry. Reading, listening to audio books, mindfulness cd, bath, walk and exercise as well as the above. Emotion list Make sure that all of the above are written down for your child and yourself to remind you. This will make it easier to actively take time out to cool down and then the issue can be addressed once the mood has lightened. Trevor Luxmore decided to retire from his position just after his 65th birthday. In honour of him spending the whole of his working life at Cleveland Bridge, the company threw Trevor a retirement party at its social club on Neasham Road, which was attended by Trevor’s colleagues, friends and family. After initially joining in 1967 at the age of 16 as Post Boy, a role he’s kept ever since, Trevor has become a muchloved fixture at the Darlington-based manufacturer. Over the years Trevor’s held a range of support jobs including running the Safety Wear Shop, distributing drawings to the template makers, helping to manage the stationary store and maintaining the post room. Chris Droogan, Manging Director of Cleveland Bridge UK said, “50 years’ service is a remarkable landmark for anyone to achieve. The company has been fortunate and is extremely grateful to have had the benefit of Trevor’s loyalty and commitment for the past 50 years.” Trevor Luxmore added, “Cleveland Bridge provided me with my very first job and I’m still here 50 years later. I’ve worked with some fantastic people who have become friends and who have made this experience so much more than just a job. TV and Radio’s Jenni Falconer and Darlington vets support Pet Parasite Action campaign Throughout June and July hundreds of vet practices up and down the country, including Grange Vets, Weardale veterinary Centre, Kebir House Veterinary Practice Ltd, Kebir House Vets, Yoredale (Bedale), Bainbridge Vets Ltd, Yoredale (Harmby Rd) and Copeland Veterinary Surgeons are backing the Pet Parasite Action campaign to encourage people to help protect their pet (and their family) against harmful parasites inside and out. The campaign is being supported by TV presenter Jenni Falconer, “As a dog owner and a mum I want to be sure I do the best thing for my pet and my family. During the Pet Parasite Action campaign I’m encouraging all pet owners to visit their vet for a simple way to help protect their pet against parasites inside and out, including those that might be harmful to rest of the family. Let’s act now to protect all the members of our family, furry or otherwise.” After conducting a nationwide survey of over 1000 dog owners, Pet Parasite Action says the findings confirm that dogs are important members of the family and most owners say that losing their pet would be devastating.The most important reason for owning a pet is to keep active but other reasons, such as nonjudgemental love and an ability to give comfort, become more important across the regions.* The survey also discovered that 85 per cent of us happily hug our dogs and the majority let their dog sleep on their bed, sit on their sofa or lap, lick their faces and give them kisses. But 28 per cent said they have found parasites on carpets, 26 per cent have spotted a parasite on themselves and a shocking four per cent have even found one on their child. Despite this, over a third of people say they never think about the parasites their pet might be hosting when they hug them. When it comes to pet parasites, most dog owners don’t have an accurate view of which are the most risky to them or their family. It’s lungworm that worries owners most with 74% saying it is the pet parasite they are most concerned about, with the only exceptions being the North East where fleas were the most concerning parasite and Scotland where ticks were of equal concern. While 82% of dog owners are able to correctly identify that lungworm could be fatal to their pets, 43% say they think dog lungworm is the parasite that poses the greatest risk to human health, when actually it’s harmless to people. Furthermore, despite concern about its effects, 23% say that they don’t know when their pet was last treated for lungworm. This is worrying because cases of this deadly parasite are increasing, and spreading throughout the country into previously unaffected areas.1,2,3 Just 48% realise that ticks can cause fatalities in dogs because they can transmit diseases such as babesiosis. Only 28% recognise that

ticks (as a transmitter of Lyme disease in people) are a risk to human health. Ticks should be a concern to pet owners because the threat from this parasite to pets and people is growing: in recent years there has been an increase in tick numbers across the UK due to changing weather patterns and an increasing population of deer, which host ticks.4,5,6 Plus a recent study showed 1 in 3 dogs is infested with ticks.7 The least worried about parasite is probably one of the most concerning. Just 15% say they are most worried about roundworms and a mere 7% correctly say they think it could threaten human health. Yet, if accidentally eaten, eggs from the roundworm Toxocara pose a significant threat to human health, potentially causing blindness or neurological disease – especially in children. One in four people don’t realise that their pet could have parasites but they might not be visible, as is often the case with lungworms, hard to find ticks and microscopic roundworm eggs. Around 1 in 6 say that it’s been about a year since they last treated their pet for ticks, lungworm or roundworms. The benefits of pet ownership are considerable and pet owners do not need to be alarmed. They just need to be aware of the risks of parasites and the fact that simple, regular treatment will help to reduce these risks for all. The Challenge is on!!!! We’ve got to raise £40,000 to pay for a life changing medical procedure for our awesome little boy!!! A big challenge is now on for our family to raise funds to allow our son Emil Mason to have a life-changing operation, which could transform his mobility and his quality of life greatly. At the age of 1, Emil was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, specifically bilateral spastic legs with some difficulties in his arms too. At that time our world totally fell apart and we remember that day very well. Emil was born very premature at 31 weeks and he spent 5 weeks in Special Care.Thankfully we were able to bring our little boy home and he is now 3yrs 9 months old. Cerebral Palsy can affect children and adults in many different ways, Emilís type of Cerebral Palsy results in very high muscle tone, which means his leg muscles are incredibly stiff, he quite often struggles to control the movements himself. Over the years it has taken a lot of input from his Physiotherapists, family, staff at nursery/school and from ourselves, as parents, to get Emil to where he is now. Emil is a very determined and resilient little boy. He requires a Kaye walker at present to get around and day to day activities are completely compromised but Emil is an amazing, smiley little boy who is extremely determined and wants to be involved in everything with family, friends and the dog. Physiotherapy as mentioned and medication are very much part of Emilís daily life and he deals with this very well at his young age but we do know that as time passes the pain in his legs and arms will increase as the muscles tighten with growth. We recently found out about a procedure which could make such a difference to Emil and so now we have a new battle!

We intend to fund it ourselves as much as possible but we will need help to raise the rest. We have started a number of fundraising events and are extremely grateful to all the incredibly kind people we are surrounded by who have donated and supported us so far. There is a life-changing operation suitable for Emil. The procedure is called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), which involves cutting the sensory nerves in the lower spine, in turn reducing the abnormal messages Emil currently receives from his sensory nerves. SDR is not currently funded by the NHS but is offered as a ‘self-funding’ programme. The family are therefore responsible for the cost of the surgery and months to years of intensive physiotherapy post-operation. We 24
