Funding win enables major community centre refurbishment
A community centre will receive a significant refurbishment due to a village winning a grant amounting to tens of thousands of pounds. The Impetus Community Trust has given Middleton St George Community Centre £55,000 for major external and internal improvements. Pupils flaunt their creativity to get ‘keep the zigzags clear’ initiative off to a stylish start
Primary school pupils in Darlington have done their bit to promote road safety in the borough – and shown off their creative skills in the process. Junior Road Safety Officers delivered an assembly at Corporation Road Community Primary School, followed by the youngsters creating coloured flags for a string of bunting that has been hung outside the school to alert drivers of the importance of ‘keeping the zigzags clear’. Those ‘zigzags’ are, of course, the markings outside school buildings that indicate the marked area must be kept clear of any vehicles, and which are so instrumental in ensuring the safety of children – especially at the start and end of the school day. This was a lesson that Junior Road Safety Officers Tanisha Ahmed and Jakob Smith were keen to impart to all of the pupils in attendance at the assembly. “A great way to remind pupils and parents of this important issue” Tanisha explained: “All the children decorated some bunting telling people they must not park in this area as it will block the view for children and parents trying to cross the road. It also makes it difficult for Steven, our lollipop man, and if you park there, you may get a fine. Please keep us safe!” Teaching assistant Michelle Stott echoed such sentiments, adding: “The children all took part in the assembly delivered by our Junior Road Safety Officers who explained about the importance of not parking on the yellow zigzags outside of school. “It’s been a great way to remind the pupils and their parents of this important issue, and the bunting they’ve created looks wonderful.” A vital initiative not just at this school, but across the borough The ‘keep the zigzags clear’ initiative has been embraced by multiple schools in Darlington borough, with the council’s cabinet member for transport, Nick Wallis, stating: “Our Road Safety Team work closely with local schools and the Junior Road Safety Officers to help teach youngsters how to stay safe. “The bunting created by the pupils is a great way to remind parents and other drivers of the need to play their part and keep clear of the zigzags outside a school to ensure the children can see and be seen when crossing the road.” You can learn more about the Junior Road Safety Officers programme by visiting the Let’s Go Tees Valley website at www.letsgoteesvalley.co.uk. 12

Darlington ranked the third-best town centre in the North East
Vindication for Darlington Borough Council’s management of the town centre has come in the form of an independent report examining the future of the North East’s town centres, which declared Darlington’s to be the third best in the region. Darlington town centre was placed behind only Newcastle city centre and the Metro Centre in the Town Centres: Planning for the Future report compiled by the North East Chamber of Commerce and town planning specialists Lichfield. The study took into account the number and size of shops offered by each town centre. A great result – but no cause for complacency While senior councillors welcomed the news of Darlington’s high ranking, they admitted that more work needed to be done to address the town centre’s ongoing challenges.
Darlington Borough Council is concentrating on a more flexible planning approach to town centre uses, parking offers and actions to enhance the area’s appearance and cleanliness. It has also put in place a comprehensive package of events to attract visitors. The report recognises the need for change in town centres, with retail becoming more concentrated and sitting alongside leisure and residential. In Darlington, this could manifest in a greater number of office jobs in the town. The authority will also be urging landlords to consider alternative uses for buildings, instead of leaving them standing empty.
The council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and regeneration, Chris McEwan, said: “We recognise and welcome the report but we are not complacent – we have some exciting plans for the town centre.
McEwan continued: “The report makes a number of recommendations about how councils and stakeholders should go about tackling the challenges facing town centres and I’m pleased to see that they mirror a lot of the work already being done in Darlington.
“Like so many other High Streets, Darlington is not immune to blows, but by working in partnership with retailers and other stakeholders in the town centre, we can tackle those challenges.
“Business, property owners and the council will work to create the conditions for a diverse and healthy town centre.
“We are working alongside business owners to develop a clear vision and a holistic approach for the future – developing actions for the short term and implementing physical change for the long term.” 16

A Conversation with...
Nathan Longthorne Nathan Longthorne is the Hotel Manager of The Croft Hotel, Darlington. Nathan has worked in hotels from the young age of 16 and has worked in the local area at some stunning venues. Here we asked Nathan about his experience working at The Croft Hotel and we managed to find out some insider facts. What is your personal history with The Croft Hotel? When did you start here? I have worked in hotels since I was 16, starting at the Eden Arms Hotel in Rushyford and staying in the local area at some truly stunning venues. My prior employment to The Croft Hotel was at the George Hotel in Piercebridge, which I left to join the Croft in June 2017. The Croft Hotel has always been a hotel that I have admired and wanted to manage, so when I was offered the opportunity, it was one I certainly couldn’t turn down! What do you enjoy most about your job? The thing that I enjoy most is seeing customers from all walks of life and for many different reasons, from sad to happy occasions, and trying to do the best I possibly can for them. What is your fondest memory from your time at The Croft Hotel so far? I would say that it would be newlyweds coming to see me after the day and telling me how perfect their day was and that they wish they could do it all again. This gives me true satisfaction and I encourage all of those who have been married at the hotel to not be a stranger – I would love nothing more than to see them once their photography is done and then every anniversary and Valentine’s thereafter. In a sentence or two, why should someone stay at The Croft Hotel when they require accommodation in or near Darlington? They should stay at The Croft Hotel because we are a Best Western Plus hotel that oozes quality, from the high standards of the bedroom facilities to the fantastic foods we offer.

Is there a fact about the building you can share with us that the average visitor or guest won’t know? The Hotel itself was built in 1825 and has actually shrunk over the years. Originally with a swimming pool and double the bedrooms, it was a huge operation, but over the years it has been reduced and sold. The other fact would be that Lewis Carroll – the author of Alice in Wonderland – lived in the refectory next to the hotel, and to this day, Cheshire cats are visible in the church wall decorations that inspired him. What are guests typically most surprised by when they stay at the hotel? Guests are mostly surprised by the modern beautiful décor within the hotel. It appears very traditional from the outside; however, once you walk through the door, you will realise this is not the case, especially with the quirky décor and art on the walls. What are the best things for guests at the hotel to see and do? I would recommend that our guests visit St Peter’s Church and look at the décor and history behind it, as well as visiting Croft Circuit, a fantastic speedway only 1.5 miles away from the hotel.

What is the most unusual turn of events you’ve seen at a wedding party at Croft Hotel? At a recent wedding, the bride and groom hired classical dancers to perform their first dance for them with masks of their face on the dancers who joined in for the last 30 seconds.

Extra funding secured by Darlington council to fix local roads
Central Government is set to provide Darlington Borough Council with an additional £770,000 in funding to repair potholes and improve the conditions of roads and bridges throughout the borough. This further money from the Department for Transport was first announced during the Budget on Monday 29th October 2018. Roads maintenance has already been identified as a real issue by Darlington Borough Council, as shown by its decision to boost spending over the next four years. Last year, the authority allocated an extra £500,000 on top of existing maintenance budgets to enhance the condition of roads in the borough. A total of £1 million was ultimately spent in the borough over the summer on the resurfacing or micro-asphalting of more than 100 roads and residential streets, amounting to eight times more work than is typical during the council’s summer programme. The council also undertook a survey of the local road network late last year, and found that the condition of the borough’s roads had significantly improved, with the number of roads requiring attention falling from 22% to 16%. More government cash “as welcome as it is overdue” The extra money from central government will be invaluable for continuing the trend of improvement seen in the state of Darlington’s roads well into 2019. Not only will the heightened funding enable more roads in poor condition to be suitably repaired, but it will also be used to protect surfaces before they have the opportunity to deteriorate, as has been the focus of the council’s existing micro-asphalt programme.

Such additional money does come with one major catch, however: it must all be spent by Sunday 31st March, a condition that the local authority has queried. Councillor Nick Wallis, cabinet member for leisure and local environment, commented: “The additional funding package from Central Government is as welcome as it is overdue – although I have to question the deadline of 31st March to get it all spent. “Everyone knows winter is not the best time to repair roads. If we have a winter like last year, when the worst of the snow fell in March, there will be real challenges to be able to use this funding to its best. “We’ve been asking for years for the Department for Transport to recognise the scale of what needs to be done to improve roads and start to tackle years of underinvestment by Central Government. “To offer substantial funding while tying one hand behind our backs seems rather pointless.” Good news for highways the length and breadth of the borough Wallis added: “In Darlington, we decided to provide additional maintenance funding over a longer term to allow sensible planning and investment. “This funding is on top of what was already earmarked, and we’ve seen a summer of activity across the borough which is already showing real results.” More information about the various highway schemes in the area can be found on the Darlington Borough Council website at www.darlington.gov.uk.

FILM REVIEW: Glass It’s difficult to approach deconstructing M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller without unleashing a couple of spoilers from the two previous installments in the trilogy. Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016) – both of which you will need to watch to have any appreciation of Glass – introduce us to David Dunn, aka The Overseer; Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glass; and Kevin Wendell Crumb, aka The Horde. In Unbreakable, Price (Samuel L. Jackson) mentors Dunn (Bruce Willis) as he discovers his true potential as a crime-fighting protector of people. Mentoring him as he learns that Dunn’s body cannot be damaged, and that he has a sense of when people have done something terrible, Price is secretly his very antithesis; injured easily, with bones of ‘glass’, and capable of committing atrocities on an unthinkable scale. Sixteen years later, Split sees Ken Wendell Crumb’s combined ‘horde’ of 23 multiple personalities (played by James McAvoy) kidnap three young women. They are prey for his most terrifying persona, The Beast, who can actually alter Crumb’s body composition and empowers him with superhuman abilities while his many other egos fight inside him to either serve or betray this terrifying entity. Convoluted enough so far? Glass begins where Split left off. Crumb has escaped, and David Dunn has been alerted to the presence of this new, formidable foe. Price, meanwhile, has spent the last decade or so in a hospital for the criminally insane – setting the scene for the conclusion of this superhero trilogy. However, Glass has already lost a degree of the intrigue developed during Split. Neither David Dunn nor Elijah Price were particularly engaging characters in Unbreakable, which only revealed itself to be a superhero movie during its final moments. Kevin Crumb, however, was a complex and emotionally involving antagonist (or, to be precise, 23 engaging characters in one!) – with his link to the Unbreakable universe withheld, again, until the final scene of the movie.
DM Rating: All three characters, though, are soon thrown together in the same hospital, where their superhuman qualities are presented as manifestations of deeply rooted traumas and psychological issues. Glass does broach this ontological theme in an original, refreshing way, posing the question of: “What makes us human, inhuman or even superhuman?” However, whereas McAvoy’s many personas display various phases of struggle and distress, the cast of Unbreakable fail to develop beyond the one-dimensional characters they embodied 19 years ago. During Glass, you find yourself rooting for The Horde’s various personas, Hedwig, Patricia and co – despite the possibility that they could break free at any moment and return to slaughtering innocents in the name of The Beast. Also, you always get the feeling that they will break free. Mr. Glass is far from the meek, immobile patient he has pretended to be (though why he’s waited 19 years to evade capture is unknown), and his latest masterplan for chaos soon presents itself to the audience. How will he use The Horde and The Beast, and will The Overseer be able to stop them? These regular good-vs-evil archetypes are delivered, but it’s where Shyamalan rejects genre convention that Glass really delivers. It is something of an antipode in itself – the dissection of the superhero movie, for people who are bored of superhero movies. Still, it remains anticlimactic at best. Though certainly worth watching if you’ve already seen the first two instalments, Glass feels like the culmination of a trilogy that never really discovered its true potential. All Tees Valley council leaders backing Mayor’s airport buyout plan All Tees Valley council leaders backing Mayor’s airport buyout plan Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has taken a significant step forward in his plan to buy Durham Tees Valley Airport, having secured support from all five Tees Valley council leaders for the scheme. This means that the plan, aimed at returning Durham Tees Valley Airport to public ownership, now has the confirmed backing of Darlington Borough Council’s Stephen Harker, Hartlepool Borough Council’s Christopher Akers-Belcher and Stockton Borough Council’s Bob Cook. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council leader Sue Jeffrey and Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd have also both expressed support for the scheme, despite having also admitted to misgivings. The airport plan had been packaged as part of a 10-year Investment Plan awaiting a vote by the leaders. What will the Mayor’s airport plan involve? Mr Houchen said: “I’m delighted that all five council leaders have decided to put party politics aside and throw their weight behind my plan to save Teesside Airport. “When I first pledged to take our airport back into public ownership, I was widely ridiculed and told it couldn’t be done. “But thanks to the tens of thousands of you who put your faith in me, we are now within reaching distance of taking back control of our airport to secure its future for generations to come. “Together, this will be an airport owned by the people, for the people, that will work in the interests of Tees Valley residents and our local economy.” 32
The airport plan comprises various stages. Those include buying the airport, recruiting a commercial operator by March 2019, attracting a low-cost carrier and a tenfold rise in passenger numbers, 25% of them business passengers, by 2022. That growth should be spurred by the intended additions of 10 routes – 50% of them chartered, 50% scheduled – by 2022. It is hoped that by 2027, a further £421m will be brought into the Tees Valley economy, generating 7,682 jobs. Also on the table is a yearly increase of up to 500 tonnes in freight tonnage by 2023, while Tees Valley residents will be encouraged to take up to 3.41 flights each year – the national average. Reactions to the Investment Plan The 10-year Investment Plan put forward by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, of which Mr Houchen is chairman, has won widespread support from Tees Valley council leaders. Mr Budd noted that the plan “contains many essential and transformative projects and investment proposals”. However, he warned that Middlesbrough Borough Council “have raised very real concerns over the airport deal ... in the face of a serious and worrying lack of information”. He insisted: “It is essential that we – and the public – receive regular progress updates” on the airport scheme. Ms Jeffrey called it “the biggest single progress in the plan that is funded only from our own resources and it has been allocated £75m of devolution cash (£40m to buy the airport and surrounding land, up to £20m to cover operating losses and £15m for improvements).”
