‘Hope for Hasti’ 700mile barefoot walk brings fundraising soldier to Darlington A soldier undertaking an incredible 700-mile barefoot hike across Britain arrived in Darlington in early August, as part of his efforts to raise £400,000 for gene therapy for his eight-year-old daughter, Hasti, who has a rare genetic disease. Major Chris Brannigan’s ‘Hope for Hasti’ campaign had already raised almost £425,000 by the time of his arrival in the town, with the funds going towards research into Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS), for which there is currently no treatment. What is Cornelia de Lange Syndrome? CdLS is characterised by reduced growth, feeding problems, speech and language difficulties, hearing problems and, in many cases, limb abnormalities. It is rare for children with the condition to become adults who live independent lives, often requiring lifelong round-the-clock care. “My little girl can’t just choose to be better” Major Brannigan started his journey in Lands End in July, and had already walked 550 miles when he reached Darlington, where he cooled his feet in the town centre’s water steps.

He said: “They are really, really painful if I’m honest. The roads are really sharp. They are covered in glass and aggregate and stones. It’s just not pleasant. “Every step is painful but while I can choose to stop, my little girl can’t just choose to be better. “Every step is a step closer to her getting the treatment she needs to give her a healthy life.” The Darlington Mayor, Cllr Chris McEwan, joined him for the final part of his walk into the town. Major Brannigan, who served in Afghanistan, had been welcomed several days before his arrival in Darlington to Catterwick Garrison, where his family popped in for a visit. He then embarked on the next stage of his epic march to Durham, en route to his final destination of Edinburgh.

Darlington Indoor Market set for transformation into street food, bar and events space Darlington’s Indoor Market is primed for a £1.8 million refurbishment by Market Asset Management (Darlington) Ltd, which will create a street food scene, bar and events stage, temperate garden, bar and restaurant and business centre. Work is set to begin on site at the start of January 2021, continuing until May 2022, amid hopes that the revamp will attract a “wide demographic and nurture a family-based evening economy”. “Immensely proud and excited” Raymond Linch, Managing Director at MAM, commented: “We are immensely proud and excited to be redeveloping Darlington Market. “We strongly believe our initiatives will generate high levels of new footfall to supplement existing shoppers and add several new dimensions to how our town centres are revitalised. “Although phase 1 re-letting has yet to formally start, we have already received a number of strong and interesting applications for space.” What will be included in the works? The first phase of the overhaul will see approximately one third of the shop floor redeveloped to provide a street food scene, a bar and events stage, additional public toilets and an improved entrance to the West Row. There will be six street food vendors in purpose-built units,

as well as a large communal seating area. The council has signalled its intention to produce and manage a full events diary and focus its efforts on driving a family-based evening economy, which it hopes will benefit the market and the wider town centre. The second phase will encompass a facelift to the remaining shop floor of the market, a mezzanine level business centre, retail units to the West Row elevation and new public toilets. A new temperate garden will be constructed to the East Row elevation, and large sections of the market vaults transformed into a bar and restaurant during the final phase. Work has already commenced on the market’s roof. Anticipation of an enthralling new era for the Indoor Market Darlington Council’s cabinet member for economy, Cllr Alan Marshall, said: “We’re pleased to see the plans for the refurbishment of the Indoor Market progress to the next stage and we’ll be working closely with MAM to ensure the project is a success. “The Indoor Market is a jewel in Darlington’s crown and the planned investment will make it a real hub for our community for years to come. “The market, including the outdoor market, is at the heart of our long-term plans to revitalise the town centre and ensure there is something for everyone in both the day and night time economy.”

Durham Heritage Coast
Britain’s
newest railway station opened in the north east on Monday 29th June. It’s at Horden on the Durham Coast line between Middlesbrough and Newcastle, situated between Seaham and Hartlepool stations. I took a visit there when the station was only three weeks old with the intention of walking the coastal path north to Seaham along the cliff tops and alongside the railway. It is a walk that takes over three hours to do, whereas the train only takes eight minutes. There are not many options at Horden, but further north there is much choice of footpaths – generally alongside the railway is the most direct and along the wiggly route of the coastline is longer, but more scenic. Since it is not yet marked on any maps, I was unsure where the new station actually was, but it’s at grid reference NZ 447 412, somewhat south of where I expected, but the 1140 train from Newcastle arrived punctually at 1217. Passengers from the south, e.g. Darlington and Yarm, can change at Thornaby to access the Durham Coast Line. Before it opened, it was known as Horden Peterlee, but was opened as just Horden which has caused some confusion. My phone’s text messaging translated the three letter code for Horden, HRE, as RYE in East Sussex. And asking for Horden gave a message that info on the London Underground station at Morden could not be given. It will no doubt get sorted soon!

Baked chicken arrabbiata Make this easy baked chicken arrabbiata with tomatoes, peppers and spinach for a simple midweek meal, then freeze any leftovers. Serve with pasta Prep: 15 mins Cook: 1 hour
Ingredients • 1 tbsp oil • 4 skin-on chicken legs • 1 red onion , sliced • 1 red pepper , deseeded and sliced • 1 heaped tsp chilli flakes • 2 large garlic cloves , crushed • 200ml white wine • 2 x 400g cans cherry tomatoes • 3 oregano sprigs, plus extra to serve

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Season the chicken and fry, skin-side down, for 5 mins until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
