Welcome to the September edition of Darlington Monthly! With autumn having arrived, it won’t be long before many of us see crisp, brown leaves falling onto our paths and hear them crinkling underfoot. Before, then, though, riveting reading awaits if you “leaf” through (sorry) your free, glossy copy of the new Darlington Monthly issue for September. It’s a time of year when many readers are probably returning from their summer holidays, but the African safari experience doesn’t have to be over just yet. Our content manager Gavin Lenaghan has reviewed Disney’s visually stunning remake of animated classic The Lion King - just flick to page 30. Seeing this film at a Darlington cinema is hardly the only reason to embrace the town’s delights, as the team behind the exciting #LoveDarlo campaign can attest. On page 20, you can read our exclusive interview with them to see how the initiative has gone from strength to strength. MANCHESTER

The journey was spent in part using the free wifi to determine things to do in Manchester, using the web address below. We arrived at Manchester Victoria in the middle of a signal failure at nearby Piccadilly, so baled out of the train there. Lucky we were not going to Goostrey after all. Victoria station was once one of the worst in the north of England so it is good to see it all restored and looking smart. We had an early lunch at Yo! Sushi in the Arndale Centre using my Tastecard, and found that the National Football Museum, formerly free, now charges £10 for adults and £5 for children. (I have subsequently discovered they accept my National Art Pass for free admission.) So we headed instead to the Northern Quarter to the Greater Manchester Police Museum in Newton Street, open free but only on Tuesdays, for a fascinating couple of hours on crime and punishment. Handcuffs were demonstrated, we were placed in the cells and sat before the bench in the court room.

Darlington council staff mark hundredth anniversary of council housing

n August, staff at Darlington Borough Council celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the passing of the Addison Act. Known more formally as the Housing, Town Planning, &c. Act 1919, the legislation ushered in the beginning of council housing. The then-Prime Minister, Lloyd George, proposed the Act as a way to let “working people” rent homes which were built by the council in an attempt to raise living standards. The council residences were also conceived as “Homes fit for Heroes” returning from World War I. Darlington Borough Council’s housing team marked the milestone by holding a small exhibition chronicling the history of council housing in the County Durham town since the 1920s. The exhibition was on display at the Town Hall on Wednesday 31 July and the Dolphin Centre the following day. On these occasions, staff served 1920s-themed sweets, cupcakes and strawberries and held a colouring competition and word search competition. With each competition, children and young people could enter to compete for a £10 Love2Shop voucher. The exhibitions also included information and pictures about further council homes which had recently been unveiled for Darlington residents. The council was recently the

proud recipient of the Best Social Housing Initiative accolade in The MJ Local Government Achievement Awards 2019. This particular award was in recognition of the quality of new homes recently provided under the council’s new-build programme. Over 200 homes, including both houses and apartments, have already been designed and built in-house under this programme. The scheme will also see, for the next ten years, a hundred more properties provided each year. Councillor Lorraine Tostevin, Cabinet member for housing at the council, enthused: “Our new properties have proven very popular, with demand for all the developments far outstripping supply.” Further council properties, including apartments and three- and four-bedroom houses, are currently being built at three further sites at Fenby Avenue, McMullen Road and Wordsworth Road. These properties are expected to be ready for take-up by tenants later this year. A Conversation with...

We catch up with the innovative minds behind the hashtag bringing the town together in 2019! How did #LoveDarlo come about? What was the inspiration behind the campaign?

What are you hoping for in the next few months, in the first full year of the campaign?

It started in April 2018 and the aim of the campaign is to encourage people to come in to the town centre, which in turn increases footfall. It was originally inspired by the businesses owners and residents of the town – who, along with visitors to the town, continue to see its benefit and help it to grow.

We recently created and launched enjoydarlington.co.uk and traffic is building. We hope that this will become a one stop shop website for business owners, residents and vistors to the town. Events are listed on there, as well as the town centre guides, and much more.

How do you feel the first few months of #LoveDarlo have gone? Fantastic! We now have over 10,000 followers across all social media platforms and the feedback has been great from the very start.

How could other towns in the region, and across the UK, benefit from similar initiatives? There are a few places which do similar initiatives but the benefit to all is huge. Town centres are changing everywhere, but a campaign like #LoveDarlo is really showcasing what a fantastic town centre Darlington has.

Has anything about the town’s positive response surprised you? Town centre businesses have really pulled together to support it, and it’s great to see people who live in the town have been visiting places they didn’t even know existed. Has there been a standout moment in the campaign so far? The first Restaurant Week was held earlier in the year and, for some of the newer restaurants, it has really put them on the map. It was a really busy, but rewarding week and we’ve got another Restaurant Week planned for later in the year.

Chicken & chorizo jambalaya A Cajun-inspired rice pot recipe with spicy Spanish sausage, sweet peppers and tomatoes

Ingredients. 1 tbsp olive oil

75g chorizo, sliced

2 chicken breasts, chopped

1 tbsp Cajun seasoning

1 onion, diced

250g long grain rice

1 red pepper, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed

400g can plum tomato 350ml chicken stock

Method. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large frying pan with a lid and brown 2 chopped chicken breasts for 5-8 mins until golden. Remove and set aside. Tip in the 1 diced onion and cook for 3-4 mins until soft. Add 1 thinly sliced red pepper, 2 crushed garlic cloves, 75g sliced chorizo and 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning, and cook for 5 mins more. Stir the chicken back in with 250g long grain rice, add the 400g can of tomatoes and 350ml chicken stock. Cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the rice is tender.

MANCHESTER

he original plan was to go to Jodrell Bank, the radio astronomical observatory in Cheshire, walking distance from a little country station called Goostrey, on Tuesday 23rd July. Unfortunately, on 7th July, Jodrell Bank was designated a World Heritage Site and a big festival weekend was arranged which meant that the site was closed for clean-up on the day of my planned visit. This would have used an Advance Purchase ticket with TransPennine to Manchester, and a day return to from Manchester to Goostrey. Since Advance Purchase tickets are not refundable (although the date can be changed before time of travel), I decided to stick with the date and have a day in Manchester with Daniel whose presence reduces my fare by 1/3 using the Family and Friends railcard. Note the child you travel with does not have to be your own. The journey was spent in part using the free wifi to determine things to do in Manchester, using the web address below. We arrived at Manchester Victoria in the middle of a signal failure at nearby Piccadilly, so baled out of the train there. Lucky we were not going to Goostrey after all. Victoria station was once one of the worst in the north of England so it is good to see it all restored and looking smart. We had an early lunch at Yo! Sushi in the Arndale Centre using my Tastecard, and found that the National Football Museum, formerly free, now charges £10 for adults and £5 for children. (I have subsequently discovered they accept my National Art Pass for free admission.) So we headed instead to the Northern Quarter to the Greater Manchester Police Museum in Newton Street, open free but only on Tuesdays, for a fascinating couple of hours on crime and punishment. Handcuffs were demonstrated, we were placed in the cells and sat before the bench in the court room. We explored the area around Oldham Street and Tib Street and found a pleasant little pavement café amongst the vintage

shops on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter. I introduced Daniel to Afflecks, the vintage emporium which is a Manchester institution. Piccadilly Gardens was full of children playing in the fountains on a hot day. For the afternoon we took a tram to Media City to visit the Imperial War Museum North (IWMN) at Daniel’s suggestion, and stayed there until closing watching videos and learning about conflicts from the First World War to the present day, including the Yemen and Syria. No dry as dust exhibitions here. We would have visited The Lowry art gallery in Salford, but it closed at 1700, same time as the IWMN. So we took the opportunity of a meal at Café Rouge, once again using with my Tastecard before taking the tram direct into Piccadilly and our train home. Even better, owing to trouble affixing a second unit to our train at York and then a trespasser on the line in Durham, we arrived back at Chester-le-Street 45 minutes late which means we are entitled to a delay repay payment of half the ticket value. That can go towards a trip to Jodrell Bank later in the year. You can only pack so much into a day and so we missed all the commemorations of the Peterloo Massacre of 16 August 1819, when peaceful protest about parliamentary reform led to Hussars charging the crowd and killing eleven and wounding over 500 people. There are no less than seven free exhibitions about the massacre running throughout September in the excellent Manchester libraries.

Celebrating Roald Dahl’s 103rd birthday What hopscotchy news! This month, on 13 September, the legendary writer Roald Dahl would have been celebrating his 103rd birthday - and, undoubtedly, celebrating it by fondly looking back on decades spent delighting children with heartwarming, even iconic stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG and The Fantastic Mr Fox.

Roald Dahl was born on 13 September, 1916 in Cardiff to Norwegian immigrant parents, and his life took in not only prolific bouts of writing but also a high-flying - both literally and metaphorically - career in the Royal Air Force during World War II. This article should be a razztwizzler for you...

Dahl often wrote his children’s stories from the POV of a kind-hearted child, while the villains were typically adults who would hate and mistreat children. Children’s book critic Amanda Craig has commented: “He was unequivocal that it is the good, young and kind who triumph over the old, greedy and the wicked.”

From a flying ace to an ace writer

A creator of new words

Dahl’s Norwegian family heritage never entirely left him; he was actually named after Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian polar explorer. Dahl’s childhood experiences went on to inspire stories he wrote as an adult; his childhood memory of gobstoppers, for example, led him to create the “Everlasting Gobstopper” featured in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In case you were wondering where the words “hopscotchy” and “razztwizzler” came from earlier in this article, they happen to be just two of the many new words Dahl created just for his literary work. “Hopscotchy” means cheerful, while “razztwizzler” refers to something wonderfully exciting or enjoyable.

In November 1939, Dahl - then in his early twenties - was recruited to the Royal Air Force. There, he climbed the ranks, starting out as an aircraftman and eventually reaching the rank of acting wing commander. His wartime adventures inspired his first published piece of writing, a story titled A Piece of Cake and placed in the pages of The Saturday Evening Post. Becoming a big name in children’s fiction Of course, Dahl really made his name with his stories for children - and even his first children’s book, The Gremlins, took inspiration from his time in the Royal Air Force. The story, first published in 1943, was about mythical but mischievous little creatures blamed for issues with RAF aircraft.

Maybe this 13 September would be a good time to enjoy some “flavoury-savoury” chocolate or sit in front of the “telly-telly bunkum box” to enjoy one of the televised adaptations of Dahl’s work. Frankly, you probably don’t need us to clarify what those two particular phrases mean...

THE LION

KING S

o, the 2019, Jon Favreau-directed edition of one of Disney’s greatest late-period traditionally animated classics. There are surely only two broad ways to interpret this one: it’s either a new milestone in aesthetic sophistication for animated films on the big screen, or too much of a daunting technical extravaganza to remember to inject that all-important idiosyncrasy and soul. Evidence for the prosecution of this photo-realistic, but not remotely ‘live action’ epic – every last detail of the on-screen animation instead being rendered in dazzlingly intricate CGI – comes in the form of animal mouth movements that aren’t always in synch with the words they’re speaking, together with the largely slavish manner in which the familiar classic is recreated, scene by scene. But of course, the rather cautious shot-for-shot reconstruction does at least bring the benefit of preserving much of the power of the original story. Oh, and it would be fair at this point to concede that the new Lion King does incorporate a few new helpful scenes and two, albeit forgettable new songs in a manner that scarcely leaves any visible seams for those somehow unfamiliar with, or scarcely able to remember, the 1994 original. While rather more dramatic change can naturally be observed in the voice cast, another sign of Favreau’s

sometimes overly respectful deference to the original – although, for sentimental reasons as much as anything else, perhaps not so much on this occasion – is the return of James Earl Jones as the voice of the elder lion king, Mufasa. Otherwise, the new-for-2019 cast is a tastefully chosen one for the new era, with JD McCrary and Donald Glover taking on the roles of the young and grown Simba respectively, and Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner impressing – albeit, stopping just short of show-stealing – as slow-witted warthog Pumbaa and his rather sharperquipping meerkat companion, Timon.

Any appraisal of this new Lion King, however, must surely always return to what is presumably this version’s selling point: the annoyingly persistent religion in 21stcentury cinema of utterly exacting realism being the greatest of creative virtues. This notion just doesn’t quite work in the case of an overly diligently produced remake that remains, after all, animated; a striving for immaculate photorealism that is also at once resoundingly unreal.

Nonetheless, for both kids and ‘big kids’ of any age who simply don’t care for such a fundamental contradiction and the on-screen flaws that consequently arise, Lion King-2019-style does still offer its own charms.

The history of Teesside International Airport

or many years, it was named - officially, at least Durham Tees Valley Airport. However, in January, the airport returned to public ownership - and, befitting its location just west of Stockton-on-Tees, formally reverted to the name Teesside International Airport.

In July 1966, the airport made a little piece of history when its officers’ mess was quickly converted into the St George Hotel to enable the North Korean football team to stay there during that year’s World Cup. The team played three World Cup games at Middlesbrough’s Ayresome Park stadium.

Of course, the names “Teesside International Airport” and “Teesside Airport” had long been used colloquially for the airport since 2004 - when, as part of a development plan, it became Durham Tees Valley Airport. Durham’s greater fame compared to Teesside’s was one reason cited for the change.

The following November, £412,000 was spent on the construction of a passenger terminal subsequently opened by Princess Margarethe of Sweden. This international passenger terminal was made to handle 375 passengers an hour and 350,000 a year.

The airfield on which the airport is sited started out in 1941 as a Royal Air Force station known as RAF Middleton St George. The site, nicknamed RAF Goosepool by locals due to the nearby farm of Goosepool, hosted many Canadian squadrons and launched bombing missions during the war. In 1963, the RAF station was closed; it was subsequently refashioned as a civilian airport, with its first civilian flight occurring in April 1964. By this time, the site was known as “Tees-side Airport”; the hyphen remained for many years, but “International” was added relatively soon.

In 2002, Peel Airports Ltd took a 75% stake in the airport and committed to a five-year plan of investing £20m into the site. In 2006, the airport’s yearly passenger numbers peaked at 917,963, but the financial crash sent these numbers plummeting to 224,673. The numbers bottomed out at 130,911 in 2017 - by which point, Peel owned 89% of the airport. However, in December 2018, Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen announced a £40m deal to buy out Peel, leading to the start of a new and exciting chapter in the airport’s history.

Tommy – The Album Live

07 September – 19:30 – Darlington Hippodrome International eight-piece band, The Goldhawks, is touring to mark the 50th anniversary of the release of The Who’s bestknown and most acclaimed concept album, Tommy. Frontman Doug Freeman and his band will faithfully recreate the power, tension and visceral emotion of the music, backed by a large screen showing bespoke film.

Hilarity Bitesize New Act & New Material Dixieland – A Tribute to Elvis 22 September – 19:30 – The Majestic Theatre Night, with Danny Deegan 09 September – 19:30 – Hole in the Wall This show at Hilarity Bites will feature Danny Deegan, with hosting by Andy Fury and support from several new acts, as well as established acts performing new material.

King of Britain Elvis Champion 2018/19 Niall Southall takes us on a journey through the golden era of Rock ‘n’ Roll in tribute to the King, including such classics as “Return to Sender”, “Viva Las Vegas”, “The Wonder of You”, “Suspicious Minds”, “G.I. Blues”, “Burning Love” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, to name just a few. This full live band production covers the hits from 1954 all the way through to 1977. Please note that this venue is not wheelchair accessible.

Tees Cottage Open Days

14 – 15 September – 11:00 – Tees Cottage Pumping Station Discover the history of the water supply in Darlington at this open weekend at Broken Scar on Coniscliffe Road. It is expected that all of the old steam machinery will be running, including the Victorian beam engine, boiler and gas engine, while the electric pumps installed in 1926 will also be on static display. No booking is required, and children enter for free. Otherwise, admission charges are £5 per adult and £4 concessions.

28 September – 19:30 – The Majestic Theatre The Indian-born, London-resident comic and favourite from QI and Have I Got News for You brings her debut show to Darlington, while asking us: who wants to live without love? Expect an acerbic and unapologetically less-than-politicallycorrect delivery of certain home truths.

Piano Man: The Billy Joel Experience

28 September – 20:00 – The Forum Music Centre This seven-piece band pays homage to the formidable backcatalogue of singer-songwriter Billy Joel, bringing the energy of a live performance to the well-known classics.

20 September – 12:30 – Waterstones The English-Canadian crime writer will be at Waterstones’ Cornmill Centre branch to sign copies of his latest Inspector Banks novel, Many Rivers to Cross. The novel sees Det Superintendent Banks confronting a very contemporary crime, with international connections, in his Yorkshire town.
