96-year-old rehomes 17-yearold dog, and encourages others to consider adopting older pets A 96-year-old woman has declared her newly adopted 17-year-old dog “the one”, and urged others to think about rehoming older dogs in need of somewhere to live. As reported by the Chronicle, Marjory from Durham was left feeling alone, isolated and without a sense of purpose after being devastated by the loss of her dog prior to lockdown. However, she then made what turned out to be the life-changing decision to browse the website of Dogs Trust Darlington – and in the process, discovered Jack, a 17-year-old Jack Russell. Making those final years special The two have lived side-by-side ever since, with Marjory commenting: “I’ve had dogs most of my life. Jack makes me so happy and seeing him happy is fantastic. “When I found out how old Jack was it made me, even more, intent on giving him a home because I couldn’t bear the idea of him spending the rest of his life living in kennels. “He is a very calm dog and likes to take life at his own pace, so this suits me very well. I love going for walks with him because he doesn’t pull on his lead and he even stays by my side when he is off the lead as well. “I would encourage anyone thinking of adopting a dog to consider an older dog. They are so full of character and are more likely to adjust in a new home if, like Jack, they have spent the majority of their life as part of a family.” “Older dogs make fantastic companions too” The period since the beginning of lockdown has seen a surge in demand for puppies, with many families welcoming younger pooches into their homes.

According to Propellernet, there was a 213% jump in Google searches about buying a puppy following the start of lockdown, compared to the previous 12 months. Sue Embleton, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Darlington, said: “In the last year so many people have wanted to welcome a puppy into their family, but just like Jack has proven, older dogs make fantastic companions too. “Owners like Marjory always tell us that the feeling you get from seeing them safe, warm, happy and enjoying an afternoon snooze snuggled up on the sofa, is something that can’t be beaten. “Helping an older dog enjoy their autumnal years and giving them the chance to live their best life is incredibly rewarding.” The Dogs Trust website at www.dogstrust.org.uk provides more information on adopting and caring for an older dog.

Alnwick Plus Bus T
he weather forecast was not very promising, with rain expected and precious few places to shelter in the last stages of lockdown. At Newcastle, I boarded the 0933 Cross Country train, next stop Alnmouth for Alnwick. I added a PlusBus ticket to my off peak day return to give unlimited bus travel through to Alnwick, Warkworth and Amble, and, had I wanted it, to Boulmer and Longhoughton too, all for just £3 extra on top of my rail fare. The train arrived at Alnmouth on time 24 minutes later, a journey that the AA reckoned would take 46 minutes in a car. The welcoming coffee trailer was there and I walked up to station access road to await the Arriva bus X20 to Alnwick. There I explored the streets on market day, finding the Dirty Bottles pub at 32 Narrowgate now turned into a restaurant, but still with the 300 year old bottles in the window inviting a nasty end to anybody who touched them. I went to see the entrance to the Castle and noted that the Bailiffgate Museum was due to open on 22nd May. My timed entry to Alnwick Garden was at 1155. I think in practice I could have been admitted much earlier (or later), because although the entrance area and café were busy, that was just people sheltering from the rain and the gardens themselves were very quiet. I was very kindly allowed to eat my own food in the seating area outside the café, and was enchanted by some tiny ducklings which passed through my legs with their mother duck keeping a watchful
eye for any spare morsels. The Alnwick Garden is not huge, and pleasant to walk around with an umbrella. The poison garden, which opened in 2005, was particularly interesting since every plant could kill you. The Grand Cascade was impressive, the Rose Garden fragrant and the Bamboo Labyrinth was quite disorientating. At the time of my visit in early May, the Taihaku Cherry Blossom trees were at their best, the largest collection in the world with 329 trees and both pathways and swings. Mid-afternoon I took the bus down to Amble, and had a late lunch under canvas in a pub called the Wellwood Arms which had a particularly appealing attribute: it was open for hot food. I took a walk around the Marina and harbour which was interesting. Unfortunately the Marina Arms, which ceased being a pub a few years ago, and was turned into a vintage emporium, has now been demolished to make way for new housing. The old building was piled high awaiting removal. The bus returned to Alnwick via Warkworth with its fine English Heritage castle. Once back in Alnwick around 1700 I holed up inside Barter Books which is based inside the former railway station, until closing time. Grand though it was, the short branch line closed in 1968 leaving the smaller station at Alnmouth to take the traffic. Barter Books opened in 1991, and is an Alnwick institution, and has a variety of seating options to enjoy reading a book, which I did until 1800. It was in 2000 that
they discovered the original “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters which had been prepared for use in 1939, but never actually distributed. A visit to a turf accountant filled the time before my bus back to Alnmouth for the 1946 train which is one of only two all stations trains south to Newcastle, in the company only of a cyclist who had ridden from Devon to Edinburgh who was staying overnight in Widdrington.

Darlington Borough Council sets out ambitious walking and cycling plans Work is underfoot to accelerate cycling and walking infrastructure on Darlington’s key routes, with the council looking to obtain further funding as part of a package of measures recently announced by the Government. The authority has been formulating proposals that it believes could greatly help increase levels of walking and cycling in the borough. The first priority route it is interested in accelerating is a cycling route between Darlington Memorial Hospital and the town centre. This is intended to form the initial phase of a highquality direct route from West Park to the town centre, as part of broader plans to ease congestion in the Woodland Road and Cockerton area. The design will be based on the latest design standards outlined by the Government. Major investment needed above normal council levels Also planned is the creation of a cycle route between the town centre and Morton Park to link to key employment areas, together with other cycling improvement schemes across the borough. However, with all of these schemes necessitating significant investment above the levels allocated to the local authority, the council will be seeking to obtain the funding to make them a reality. The Government has provisionally allocated £1.7 million to the Tees Valley to be committed this year as part of the Active Travel Emergency Fund, and Tees Valley Combined Authority has £3.9 million in total allocated to the delivery over the next three years of its Local Walking & Cycling Investment Programme. As its immediate priority, Darlington is bidding to secure enough funding to proceed with the first phase of the Woodland Road scheme.

Separately, Darlington, Stockton and Durham councils are working together on ambitious plans to create a Stockton and Darlington Railway walking and cycling route in time for the bicentenary celebrations in 2025. It is intended that this will follow the 26-mile route’s original alignment, with a section already currently being delivered on site. The route is also planned to link to the exciting redevelopment proposals for the Head of Steam Railway Museum. There are also plans to continue the rollout of 20mph speed limits outside schools, in order to enhance safety and encourage more families and students to walk and cycle to school. In addition, the council is researching initiatives used in other parts of the country to aid its efforts to improve the environment around schools. “We are committed to improving infrastructure for cycling and walking” Councillor Andy Keir, cabinet member for local services, stated: “We are committed to improving infrastructure for cycling and walking across the town and around schools to encourage more people to take the healthier and more environmentally friendly options of getting to and from work or school. “The Government has committed to improving the health of the nation while also tackling climate change and getting out on your bike or walking is the best way to achieve that in one go – we hope to get more people in Darlington walking and cycling.”

How badly did fiction’s most notorious puppy-skinning fashion designer require an origin story? The answer, it seems, is more badly than we thought, at least when Cruella’s bad could turn out to be this good. A somewhat fresher effort than most recent live-action films from the Disney IP locker, this Craig Gillespie-directed crime comedy turns out to be a visual feast, as engaging to newcomers to the classic character as it is to fashion aficionados. It is also mercifully child-friendly, even if that comes at the expense of a deeper insight into the eventual supervillain’s nefarious activities in later life. Nope, no puppies – whether real or CGI – are shown as having come to harm in this movie. The deliciously vampy Cruella de Vil herself even has a fondness for dogs, save for a specific grudge towards Dalmatians for what quickly become obvious reasons. An impressive feat of world-building It’s not just the rare look at the unhinged character’s beginnings that help detach Cruella from what might have otherwise seemed the overfamiliar context of Dodie Smith’s original 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, but also the decision to set it amid the emerging punk atmosphere of 1970s London. But before even then, we are introduced to the inquisitive and mysterious schoolgirl Estella Miller (Tipper Seifert-Cleveland), complete with two-tone hair, whose calamitous experiences first getting

ejected from school, and then at an ill-fated party hosted by the wealthy Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), eventually lead her to an orphaned existence in the capital. Fortunately, the enterprising child rapidly finds Jasper and Horace Badun (played in adulthood by Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser respectively), who go on to become her comrades-in-crime and… eventually, and improbably, fashion. Emma Stone captures the imagination as the maverick adult Estella who, via a characteristically chaotic stint as a cleaner at the famous Liberty department store, comes face-to-face with “The Baroness”. Fleshing out the ‘good’ of an iconic ‘baddie’ The narcissistic head of a legendary couture house turns out to possess a little something Estella wants – and not just a juggernaut position in the fashion firmament. To achieve her goals, Estella – now an apprentice of The Baroness – needs to call upon old contacts, as well as her own determination and inventiveness in a series of happenings that progressively upstage her employer. It is in the latter capacity that Estella embraces the identity of Cruella de Vil – hair, flair and dare. It’s a quest that almost costs the fiercely theatrical designer longstanding friendships, and even her life. However, it also makes for quite the ride, and a contribution to the Dalmatians legend that – for all of Cruella’s encroaching extremity and evil – gives us a background story audiences can believe in and emphasise with.

Doner kebab Make your own version of this takeaway favourite, complete with chilli and garlic sauces. Serve your homemade doner kebab with pitta bread and shredded cabbage
Prep: 20 mins Cook: 50 mins Ingredients 500g lamb mince 1 small onion, coarsely grated 4 garlic cloves, minced or finely grated 100g fresh breadcrumbs 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried oregano ¼ tsp smoked paprika sunflower oil for oiling
To serve pitta breads, shredded red or white cabbage, sliced onion, chopped tomatoes, pickled chillies, chilli sauce, garlic sauce, tahini

Directions Step 1 Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Tip all the ingredients except the oil into a food processor with a large pinch of salt and lots of ground pepper. Pulse until everything is combined and chopped together. You can also just squish everything together in a bowl but this will give you a looser finish. STEP 2 Oil a large sheet of foil, tip the meat mix in the middle and mould to a very thick sausage, roughly the shape of an aubergine. Roll up the foil tightly, twisting up the ends to create a Christmas cracker shape.
STEP 3 Lay on a shallow roasting tin and roast in the oven for 35-40 mins, turning occasionally, or until a digital cooking thermometer reads 75C when pierced in the middle. Leave the kebab to cool a little, then unwrap the foil. Place back on the tray and brown under the grill or with a blowtorch. STEP 4 Place on a board and carve into thin slices. For full doner mode, you can hold the kebab up with a roasting fork or metal skewer and carve. Serve with warm pitta bread and any of the other accompaniments, including our chilli sauce and garlic yogurt sauce.

Plans submitted for Darlington railway station’s £100m redevelopment Proposals have now been lodged for the £100 million overhaul of Darlington railway station, Darlington Borough Council and Tees Valley Combined Authority having devised the scheme with help from Willmott Dixon. The project will entail the addition of three new platforms on the existing Bank Top station’s east side, as well as a new station building and linking footbridge. The Victoria Road entrance and car park are also set to be upgraded, and the plans also include new road layouts, broader pavements, and enhancements to walking and cycling access, so that the station can be more easily reached.
