North Yorkshire is a buried treasure hotspot!

A jewelry company has carried out a survey showing the best places in the UK to find buried treasure.

The study found that North Yorkshire is the sixth best place to find it!

The data showed there were 67.8 total finds per 100,000 people, with the total number of treasure finds totting up to 421 since 2012. Despite ranking in sixth place, North Yorkshire actually had more total finds than the highest ranking county, the Isle of Wight, who only found 184 pieces of buried treasure between 2012 and 2019.

North Yorkshire was very close to taking fifth place, losing out to Lincolnshire by only 0.1 find per 100,000! If you really want to boost your chances of digging up some buried treasure, it’s worth visiting Norfolk where 917 pieces of treasure were found between 2012 and 2019.

way to discover hidden treasure is with a metal detector. The most recent year with details on metal detector finds is 2018, where 96% of buried treasure finds were made with a device. The rest were archeological finds or from field walking or scouring streams and shores.

What should I do if I find some?

If you think you have struck gold (or any other kind of hidden horde) you must inform the coroner within two weeks, so the court can hold an inquest to see who gets to keep the loot. Failure to do so could result in an unlimited fine or up to three months in jail.

Museums both locally and nationally are given the opportunity to purchase anything a coroner rules as treasure, while the finder will be paid a lump sum depending on the value of their haul.

What is buried treasure?

The Treasure Act currently defines treasure as finds older than 300 years and made of gold or silver, or found with artefacts made of other precious metals. It also includes any artefact deemed to have historical or cultural significance.

Darlington gets huge grant for crime prevention measures!

Durham Constabulary are teaming up with Darlington Borough Council to deliver new security measures for our streets and homes. County Durham has received an £830,000 grant from the Government’s Safer Streets Fund, as a result of high levels of crime in the area.

screen that had no romantic connotations. That was until the end of the movie, where I feel it was implied that the two considered each other to be something more than friends. I hope this doesn’t become the direction Marvel takes the two characters in, as male/female friendships that don’t blossom into something more are so hard to come by on screen these days!

For me, the release of Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings truly marks the start of Phase Four of the MCU. Although Spiderman: No Way Home and Black Widow came first, the introduction of a brand new hero is certainly a great way to build on the world and the superhero landscape that Marvel has spent over 10 years developing.

From beginning to end, the themes and storyline of the movie are completely devoted to family, both genetically and found. A key way they did this was by including as much humour as possible and keeping things light hearted where appropriate. While the overall pace of the movie was excellent, it was sometimes slowed in places by including flashback scenes to tell more about Shang-Chi’s childhood and relationship with his father. It would have been better to include more of this storytelling earlier in the movie, so the climax of the film wasn’t interrupted by yet another flashback scene.

One of my favourite parts (and biggest criticisms) of the film was the relationship between Shaun and Katie. It was super refreshing to see a friendship between a man and a woman on

The action and CGI in this production is some of the best Marvel has ever produced.

Everything from cinematography to fight choreography was beautiful to watch and reality captured every viewer in the cinema.

Marvel truly embraced the new style of hand to hand combat they introduced in this movie, moving away from fist fights to embrace Chinese culture. The set design and costuming was beautiful and it was great to see Marvel move out of New York and Europe and show us more of the world we live in.

Of course, there were nods to past Marvel films to keep the continuity within the universe.

Acknowledgement was made to the blip and hints were dropped about Shang-Chi’s future in the MCU, as well as how he could tie in to some upcoming MCU movies.

Seaton Carew

C

onvalescing after an operation, I wanted a night away at the seaside, but not too far away. I returned for the first time in years to Seaton Carew, a small beachside resort which is a southern suburb of Hartlepool. I stayed in the Marine Hotel, which was built in 1900 – a very good year for building hotels, at a time of Victorian confidence and exuberance and got a double room (just for me) with sea view for £70. There is a station on the coastal Middlesbrough to Newcastle line at Seaton Carew, but it is a 15 minute walk inland, so I bought a ticket to “Hartlepool Plus Bus” and after lunch in Hartlepool took the 15 minute service 1 by Stagecoach to right outside the hotel. I did try to visit the Cameron’s brewery which gave every impression on their website that tours had been reintroduced with details of the three days a week they were open. Annoyingly it was not, even though I phoned twice as requested. I was pleased to be staying at Seaton Carew overnight as both the Hillcarter and the Grand Hotel in Hartlepool have recently closed.

Take a tip – use the bus! That’s the benefit of the Plus Bus scheme which offers unlimited local bus travel for £3.80. I went to visit the town’s excellent free museum adjacent to the Museum of the Royal Navy and up on bus 7 to explore the Headland before a repeat journey on the 1 bus to Seaton Carew.

There was a choice of fish and chip restaurants, a carvery in the hotel, and a single Indian restaurant for evening meal about 2100. I reckoned that a decent curry might help resolve an unwelcome side effect of my medication and plumped for the Seaton Tandoori, which served up a good meal despite initially placing me in the front window and forgetting about me. The curry was duck, with a good egg rice and peshwari nan, with friendly service and a couple of Cobra beers. When I got up to a lovely sea view in the morning, this combination had done its necessary work. Breakfast was extra but a tasty offering of buffet items.

Spiderweb Cheesecake The trick to this tempting treat is pulling a skewer through rings of melted chocolate to create the web effect. This no-bake cheesecake comes together quickly and tastes delicious.

Prep: 30 mins

Extra time: 2 hour › Ready in: 2 hour 30mins

Difficulty: Easy

Serves: Up to 8 people

Directions Step 1 In a small saucepan, sprinkle gelatin over water; let stand for 1 minute. Heat gelatin; stir until dissolved. Remove from the heat; cool slightly.

Step 2 In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Gradually beat in cream, vanilla and gelatin mixture until smooth. Pour into prepared digestive base.

Step 3 In a microwave, melt chocolate and butter at 15 second intervals; stir until smooth. Transfer to a resealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in a corner of bag. Pipe a circle of chocolate in centre of cheesecake. Pipe evenly spaced thin concentric circles about 1cm apart over filling.

Beginning with the centre circle, gently pull a skewer through circles toward outer edge. Wipe skewer clean. Repeat to complete web pattern.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before cutting.

Ingredients 1 (7g) sachet unflavoured gelatin 4 tablespoons cold water 2 (200g) tubs cream cheese, softened 100g icing sugar 100ml whipping cream, whipped to stiff peaks 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (23cm) prepared digestive base 25g plain chocolate or chocolate chips 1 tablespoon butter 28

National fabrication and engineering group to open second site in Middlesbrough A multi-million pound deal has secured jobs for more than 20 people at a prominent Middlesbrough workshop. Tulway, a national fabrication and engineering group, has taken ownership of one of Teeesside’s largest units. The 30,000sq ft site on Sotherby Road is the biggest of its kind in the area.

The current long-standing supply agreement on the current site will be honoured by Tulway. The workshop also boasts a 20 tonne overhead lifting capacity. Tulway currently serves a number of blue chip clients, including the National Grid and Stellantis. They have already confirmed that their move secures 23 jobs at the Middlesbrough site.

In terms of current clients, a “seamless transition” has been promised to them. Tulway guarantees to continue to support them, as well as provide a full range of fabrication and extended services to businesses across the UK. Moving to Teesside marks the opening of Tulway’s second site, the first being their Knowsley HQ in Merseyside. They reckon that acquiring the new site, as well as the opportunities presented by Brexit and the sustainability agenda, has secured the company’s track to a substantial growth period over the next five years.

Kevin Tully, the Managing Director of Tulway, has dubbed the takeover as “an exciting chapter in the future of our business”. He is excited to expand the portfolio of services Tulway offers to include high quality fabrication and mechanical installation solutions.

Mr Tully went on to say that the opening of the new site will spark the ambitious growth period the company aims to go on in the near future. It will include investment at both sites in order to grow Tulway’s presence in the North East, as well as expand their fabrication services across the UK. He also considers the acquisition of the Middlesbrough site to be a key factor in securing Tulway’s status as a significant mechanical engineering service provider in the UK. 32
