Former SAS soldier to cycle across two volcanoes for mental health charity As an ex-SAS soldier, the Sunderland-raised Derek Gamblin is accustomed to taking on challenges. He will soon be embarking on another, cycling across and between the famous south Italian volcanoes Mt Vesuvius and Mt Etna in a bid to raise money for a Teesside mental health charity.
Gamblin was inspired to participate after learning how the Teesside-based charity Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind had come under strain during the first month of lockdown, receiving over a thousand more calls than usual from Teesside residents seeking help with their mental health. Derek – who, like other members of his family, has firsthand experience of the charity’s vital services, including counselling and mental health training – recalls: “I started my ultra-cycling adventure at the beginning of the year after months of deliberation. “My dreams of racing around the world were interrupted with races being postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. I wanted to use my training and passion for cycling for a meaningful cause, and to prove that anything is possible if you are willing to work for it.” Derek, who now lives and works in Dubai, is funding all of his own travel and race costs and will be unsupported during the race. He has also said that, if changing plans mean he is unable to visit Italy, he will complete the challenge in Dubai instead. Derek aims to raise over £2,000, which will provide at least three people with three months of one-onone counselling sessions to help in easing anxiety and depression. 10

Gamblin is currently preparing for the Two Volcano Sprint (2VS) – a single-stage, unsupported bicycle challenge that will take him over a distance totalling 1,000 kilometres and an elevation exceeding 24,000 metres. The sprint will take place over 110 hours.
Lorna Routledge, Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind’s Fundraising Officer, says: “We were thrilled when Derek told us about his plans for fundraising. Derek is a local guy who has really made something of himself despite his own personal struggles in life. “He is a true inspiration for the men in Teesside and we are so proud to have him as our first ever Ambassador for the charity. We will be updating our supporters on Derek’s incredible challenge over the next few weeks via our social media channels.” As Derek currently lives outside the UK, Lorna has set up a JustGiving page on his behalf at www.justgiving. com/fundraising/derek-gamblin, where online donations can be made. Council unveils ambitious plans for Darlington while bidding for redevelopment funding Darlington Borough Council has put in motion two major redevelopment projects as it also bids for government funding that could strengthen and complement the work already underway. The council has acted on an invitation from the national government to bid for £25m of funding from the Town Fund. This is a pot of £3.6bn reserved for projects aimed at sparking renewal and long-term growth in a number of key areas. Should the council secure its targeted £25m take of the pot, it will be spent on creating adult learning space in the town centre, further T Levels educational and skills space at the college and a linear park along the River Skerne. Some of the money will also go towards supporting the creation of a 26-mile walking and cycling route set to follow the original line of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Darlington Borough Council has also submitted a separate bid for £1m of Forward Funding, a scheme originally announced by the government in July as part of a wider effort to ease the national economy’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the council isn’t simply putting regeneration plans on hold as it awaits the outcome of the bid – which, if successful, is intended to see the £1m allocation spent by next March. Instead, the council is already working to enhance an existing link between the town centre and railway station. The money for this particular initiative, the Rethinking Victoria Road project aimed at helping to regenerate the areas around the railway station, has come from the Tees Valley Combined Authority’s Sustainable Access to Employment Fund and the Darlington council’s transport budget.

Work has also commenced to secure and redevelop the cattle market site on Clifton Road, while further redevelopment work is planned later down the line for the railway station itself. Councillor Heather Scott, the leader of Darlington Borough Council, has stated: “The proposals put forward by the Town Deal Board are ambitious and wide-ranging but, just as importantly, realistic and achievable.” She added: “There will be long-lasting benefits to key parts of the town, not just from an economic point of view but in terms of improving the public realm, securing heritage assets and creating central housing and business accommodation.” Victoria Road, which lies between St Cuthbert’s Way and the railway station’s portico entrance, will be left safer and cleaner as a result of the regeneration work, which will alter Victoria Road’s layout to accommodate extra space for pedestrians along with facilities for cyclists. Councillor Andy Keir, cabinet member for local services, has cited the Rethinking Victoria Road project as “an excellent chance to make real, lasting change that will benefit residents and visitors alike.” He noted: “We have committed to making improvements in Darlington’s cycling and walking routes and this is a great example. Hopefully, it will encourage more people to access the station on their bike or on foot.”

Pumpkin & bacon soup The soft, sweet flesh of the Crown Prince pumpkin is perfect for this silky soup, butternut or onion squash are good alternatives. Prep: 1o mins Cook: 1 hr & 10mins
Ingredients • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 50g butter • 1 onion, finely chopped • 150g maple-cured bacon, cut into small pieces • ½ Crown Prince pumpkin or onion squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into medium chunks (you need about 500g pumpkin flesh) • 1l chicken stock • 100ml double cream • 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds, toasted • maple syrup, for drizzling

Method Step 1
In a large, heavy-bottomed pan, heat the oil with 25g butter. Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook on a low heat for 10 mins or until soft. Add 60g bacon and cook for a further 5 mins until the bacon releases its fat. Then increase the heat to medium, add the pumpkin and stock and season. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer, cover with a lid and cook for about 40 mins until the pumpkin is soft. Pour in the cream, bring to the boil again and remove from the heat. Set aside some of the liquid, then
blend the remaining pumpkin until smooth and velvety, adding liquid back into the pan bit by bit as you go (add more liquid if you like it thinner). Strain through a fine sieve, check the seasoning and set aside.
STEP 2
Melt the remaining butter in a pan over a high heat and fry the rest of the bacon with black pepper for 5 mins. Divide the bacon between four bowls, reheat the soup and pour over. To serve, sprinkle over the pumpkin seeds and drizzle with maple syrup.

Security revamp sees new scanners installed at Teesside Airport New sophisticated body and baggage scanners have been introduced at Teesside International Airport, as part of a £1 million refurbishment of its security area. The body scanner and a C3 x-ray baggage scanner will enable the airport to accelerate the security processing of passengers in the years ahead, as bosses set their sights on securing flights to new destinations and the expansion of existing routes. The body scanner will help the metal detectors to minimise physical checks. Meanwhile, the baggage scanner – which is set to be fitted this month – will save passengers from having to remove liquids and electrical devices from bags and pass them through separately. The machines fully comply with Department for Transport regulations, and should allow for smoother onward connectivity to Amsterdam Schiphol and Heathrow, by removing the requirement to go through their security processes. “Our airport is going from strength to strength” Ben Houchen, Tees Valley Mayor, commented: “Our airport is going from strength to strength despite the unprecedented impact on the travel industry caused by the coronavirus pandemic. “These improvements are just the latest in our efforts to make the airport as quick and easy to use as possible. “We’re developing routes, we’re developing the wider site and we also need to keep developing the terminal to give local people and visitors from across the world the best possible experience.”

A 10-year rescue plan is currently underway at the airport, with the aim of boosting passenger numbers to 1.4 million a year. The Mayor added: “Our redesigned, state-of-the-art security area will be a blessing for anyone who wants to fly worldwide from Teesside, giving seamless journeys to the hundreds of onward destinations from Schiphol and Heathrow. “Whether you’re going on holiday or flying out for business, you can do so knowing that your trip will be hassle-free.” And that’s not all for the burgeoning airport The trial of the new equipment follows the news that the airport’s arrivals hall will also be renovated to enhance its attractiveness and ease of use for passengers. Such upgrades are part of a broader scheme of ongoing work to bolster the customer experience, grow flights and attract investment. The complete redesign of the security area is anticipated, including the installation of additional scanners, by April 2021.

Grantham On
arrival at Grantham station I saw the sign “Home of the Woodland Trust”, a respected charity to which I applied for a job back in 1993, and I had not visited the town of Grantham since. It’s an East Midlands town through which the Great North Road passed and also the railway since 1850. My journey was on a new LNER Azuma train from Durham, changing at Newark southbound and direct back northbound, although the three compulsory seat reservations were all in a single seat with no window at the end of the carriage. Each time, I moved elsewhere and had a table of four to myself, as like most passengers I prefer a window. Trains to and from were all punctual, and not busy – in fact the lack of cars in the car parks at Durham, Newark and Grantham suggested many car users had taken that mode of transport for their entire journey.
Legend has it that the apple fell on his head in Grantham that helped him to discover gravity get slots later in the day and stay until closing time. Since the grounds of Belton House were closing unusually three hours early at 1400 for a staff meeting (announcing redundancies, sadly), I had just two hours to explore the formal gardens which gave way eastwards to parkland with follies and ponds and finally a large boating lake and dense woodland paths beyond. I missed the largest adventure playground which the NT has before it was early closing time and I took the bus back into town.
Grantham has two very famous former inhabitants. The town museum was closed, and the tall parish church of St. Wulfram which housed a public library as early as 1598. But Notions antiques centre in the High Street was well worth a visit. I found the Angel and Royal hotel closed for refurbishment, once a major coaching inn which fell on hard times when the railway arrived. One of England’s oldest hotels dating from 1203, it hosted King John in 1213. The Angel only gained the name “and Royal” in 1866 after a stay by the Prince of Wales. When finished, it will be worth a stay. For evening meal, I elected for fish and chips at the “Relax” restaurant on Westgate, but I do wish the lady there had refrained from repeatedly calling me “babe”. Bill & Ted
Face the Music Oh dear, where to start? Bill & Ted Face the Music is the third instalment in the Bill & Ted series, the former movies (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey) premiering back in 1989 and 1991 respectively. If you don’t remember Bill & Ted, let me jog your memory: ‘dude’, ‘dude’, some time travelling, questionable air guitar gestures, ‘dude’. A sequel to Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, we follow Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) on their journey to saving reality by writing the greatest song of all time before 19:17 hits. Along the way we meet Jesus Christ, The Grim Reaper, Gandhi and Queen Elizabeth I… are you still with me? Realising that they will not be able to write the song in time, Bill and Ted decide to travel to their future in a bid to find the song and save the world, but are continuously hunted by a time-travelling robot called Dennis (Anthony Carrigan) who wants to kill them. Usually, I quite like silly films that push boundaries, but this was 91 minutes of pure and utter nonsense. While it’s evident that Bill & Ted Face the Music tried to recapture the charm of their previous two films, personally I believe they should have left the mind-

boggling plot and one-dimensional main characters back in the ‘90s, where they belong. Only 12 minutes in and I had to wonder if they were trying to beat the record for the most times ‘dude’ has ever been said in a film. It was excessive and quite frankly annoying, to say the least, and it was rather uncomfortable witnessing the word ridiculously overused by two men in their ‘50s. It wasn’t all bad. The mash up of musicians from across the centuries was rather creative and added a sprinkle of interest to an otherwise dull film. When will you ever get another opportunity to see 1960s Jimi Hendrix, 1920s Louis Armstrong, ancient China’s Ling Lun and 2010s Kid Cudi perform together in one band? While Bill & Ted Face the Music had all the ingredients to make an eccentric, exciting and electric film, the cake came out of the oven flat and just tasted plain weird. Would I recommend this film? Sure, if you’re absolutely desperate to get out of the house… dude.
