Booming beer Cand-dle business had humble lockdown beginnings What did you find yourself getting up to during lockdown? Maybe you took up baking or got crafty. Perhaps you started your own business… That’s what Sophie Craggs from Darlington did last year, when she started making candles out of empty cans she had left over from some of her favourite beers. Her friend Laura Ferguson jumped on board over Christmas, and Beer Can-dles was born. Cut to a year later and the duo are working with some big names in the beer industry. In fact, they’re supplying candles to go into Black Sheep Brewery’s 2021 Christmas hampers. Where did it all begin? The pair started the business as a little lockdown project, after they were both furloughed from their day jobs at Northgate Vehicle Hire. But it wasn’t until January of this year that they decided to take what they were doing a bit more seriously. Now the pair have collaborated with businesses within Darlington and even further afield, with their products reaching Manchester and Scarborough. Although the business is still in its infancy, Sophie and Laura have started to branch out into new items. The duo have turned Corona bottles into hand sanitiser dispensers, as well as developing other fun alcohol inspired designs. They are also working on establishing their own signature scent to enhance their brand. The bigger picture
Although the girls buy their cans based on aesthetics, they regularly receive calls and messages from friends and strangers alike, offering them donations. People are subconsciously thinking about upcycling their cans as a result of their good work. Sophie said “Instead of it just going to recycling we can reuse the product and put it to good use.” She also made the point that designers are paid to create the art work we see on our cans of beer. For someone to just drink it and bin it is a bit of a shame.

2,000 seasonal jobs created at North East Amazon sites Looking for a bit of seasonal work to get you through the Christmas season? Well Amazon could have you covered, as they have announced they will be creating 2,000 jobs across all three North East sites, including Darlington.
What about the rest of the UK?
The retail giant confirmed the huge recruitment drive for seasonal workers will be for both their Fulfilment Centres in Darlington, Durham and Gateshead, as well as for smaller distribution and delivery centres in Gateshead and Newcastle.
The company spends most of the year preparing for the festive season, it being the time of year where the company gets a huge influx of work. According to Radek Stegbauer, the General Manager at Amazon Durham, “Our seasonal associates play an integral role in helping us deliver an exceptional experience for our customers.”
Who are they looking for? Amazon is looking for both full and part time staff. Pay at the warehouses is certainly an incentive to apply, as rates start at £10 for day shift, £11 for night shift and are expected to go up to £20 an hour for overtime.
Nationally, Amazon is predicted to hire around 20,000 seasonal workers to work across the UK’s networks of warehouses.
The growth of the company, particularly across the North East, has been unprecedented. Perhaps the most significant par t is that employment opportunities have been granted to people who otherwise might not have made it onto the career ladder.

When Daniel Craig first appears in the 25th James Bond film as the iconic super-spy, he’s adopting a surprisingly – brace yourself – romantic persona. Narratively, No Time to Die follows almost straight on from its predecessor, as Bond drives into the sunset with Dr Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux playing Bond’s main love interest a second time). At one point, Madeleine urges her beau to drive more quickly, but he resists. “We have all the time in the world,” he says dreamily. As fans of 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – where George Lazenby’s Bond utters the same line in a similar context – will probably expect, things abruptly take a tragic turn. While in Italy with Madeleine, Bond decides – on Madeleine’s suggestion – to visit his deceased ex Vesper Lynd’s tomb. However, when he does, Spectre agents ambush him – leading the now-embittered Bond to accuse Madeleine of a covert betrayal. There’s a lot of ensuing story to take in – especially as it soon emerges that Bond and the crime syndicate Spectre have a common enemy in the form of terrorist leader Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek). Millions of lives are at stake, as Safin has stolen Project Heracles, a bioweapon originally developed at MI6 but since reprogrammed at Safin’s behest to target the DNA of specific people he seeks to eliminate. To reveal why Spectre boss Ernest Stavro Blofeld (a returning Christoph Waltz) is in Safin’s sights – despite having remained imprisoned in Belmarsh since the events of the previous Bond film – would probably be entering spoiler territory. However, we at least get an inkling with the backstory told in No Time to Die’s opening sequence, the menacing tone of which proves a chilling bellwether. Fortunately, perhaps largely due to Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s hand in the script, the Bond franchise hasn’t entirely forgotten how to lighten up. In an early scene, Bond meets up with CIA agent Paloma (Ana de Armas) – and the chemistry between them is so

much fun, it’s easy to wonder how much livelier the film could have felt if she had spent a lot more time accompanying Bond on his mission. Admittedly, though, it could have jarred too much with the sombre tone director Cory Joji Fukunaga evidently intended for much of the (almost) three-hour runtime. Fukunaga turns out to be an inspired choice of director, being no stranger to adapting either the romantic (see his 2011 take on Jane Eyre) or the macabre (having co-wrote the 2017 feature-length treatment of Stephen King’s It) for the big screen. These are both qualities he brings in abundance to No Time to Die, which often feels equal parts melodrama and conspiracy thriller. These aspects harmonise in brilliantly dark fashion – and, while No Time to Die isn’t quite as taut as 2012’s Skyfall (possibly the spectacular peak of Craig’s time in the tux), it’s close enough in overall quality to make for a fitting send-off to this particularly gritty Bond era.

Recognition for former soldier at Darlington College Awards A former soldier who studies at Darlington College, has been rewarded for getting his life back on track. Kieran Rodgers, a HNC engineering student, began rebuilding his life at Darlington College after a crane crushed his leg while he was working on overhead power cables on the railway. So I resolved to get the local train straight away to Retford which proved a much better choice: the Market Place was buzzing, the Chesterfield Canal and King’s Park made a pleasant walk between station and town, and the Bassetlaw Museum was welcoming and informative about the town’s history, especially the sections about rural agriculture and the Mayflower Pilgrims. Indeed, as the picture shows, representatives of the Wampanoag community in the USA had recently visited Retford to built a traditional Wetu in the grounds of the Bassetlaw Museum. The museum is quite extensive and when leaving I found I had missed out an entire wing, but I needed to make my way back to the railway station. The compact town centre was fascinating to explore, and overall I found Retford a good deal more interesting and resumed my trip north on another LNER Azuma with a ten minute same platform change at Doncaster for Durham which I reached bang on time at 1826. .

Slow cooker pork casserole Cosy up on cold nights with our comforting slow cooker pork casserole. Chopped apples would make a great addition – add them in the final hour of cooking 15 mins to prep

Serves up to 4 people
Directions Step 1
Heat your slow cooker. Drizzle the oil in a wide frying pan over a high heat. Season the pork, then add to the hot pan. Avoid overcrowding the meat – you may want to do this in batches. Cook until deep brown all over, then transfer to the slow cooker. Add the onion and leeks to the frying pan and cook for a few mins, until they soften. Add a splash of water and scrape any tasty bits from the bottom, then tip everything into the slow cooker. Add the carrot, herbs, stock cube, mustard and vinegar, season, then add enough water to just cover the ingredients. Stir,
then set your slow cooker on low for 6-8 hrs, or high for 5-6 hrs.
Step 2
In a saucepan, mix the cornflour and honey with 1-2 tsp of liquid from the slow cooker, until you have a smooth paste. Add 100ml more liquid, bring to a simmer until thickened, then stir back into the casserole. Serve with mash or dumplings, scattered with thyme leaves.
Ingredients 1 tbsp vegetable or rapeseed oil 4 pork shoulder steaks (about 750g), cut into large chunks 1 onion, chopped 1 leek, chopped 1 carrot, chopped bundle of woody herbs (bouquet garni) – we used 2 bay leaves, 3 sage leaves and 4 thyme sprigs, plus a few thyme leaves to serve 1 chicken stock cube 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp cider vinegar 2 tsp cornflour 1 tbsp honey 32

The extremely popular Christmas baubles are back, and owner Leanne Colman said: "Last year we sold so many bauble packs, it was amazing! So, this year, we have secured a large quantity and they will be available in the shop as individuals or in a pack." Hot on the heels of the baubles, The Little Quaker team have been working on producing a Christmas stout in collaboration with two local brewers - Darwin Brewery in Sunderland and One More Than Two Brew in South Shields. Together, the team have created a Christmas stout called 'The Darkest of Dark Nights' using Little Quakers' Black Diamond rum to infuse the wood chips that were used in the production of the stout.
The beers and the baubles are available to buy from The Little Quaker Distillery shop in Clarks Yard which is open every Saturday from 10:00 until 16:00, and soon to be open on Fridays from mid October.
