Meet Hudson: the little boy who simply adores Asda! A Darlington mam has praised the team at Asda on Neasham Road, for how they treat her autistic son, Hudson. Three year old Hudson used to have regular meltdowns whenever he visited the store, but thanks to the actions of one “incredible human”, he now loves Asda so much he has created his own mini store at home. Meet Mags Bex, Hudson’s mam, has so many positive words for Mags Lunn, a worker who has created a special bond with Hudson. According to Bex, Hudson hunts Mags down every time they are in the store, hugging her at least five times before he leaves.

Now, Hudson has his own Asda checkout, trolley and shelves. There was even a nationwide search to find him a toy home deliver y van and the Asda and George wagons. Asda’s head office got wind of this, and gave him some, so now he has a fleet!!

Most impor tantly, Mags has gone above and beyond to help Hudson feel at ease in an environment that would normally cause him lots of stress, leading to a meltdown.

The McDougalls: Safari Adventure 12th August 2022 at Darlington Majestic Theatre

New Chinese restaurant starting to appear A new Chinese restaurant is set to open in Darlington town centre, and the first signs have been spotted! Setting up shop in the former Bank of Scotland building, on Blackwellgate, is a fried chicken and chinese restaurant named Yoby. The building has stood empty since 2018, but work is now well underway, and a new life has been breathed into the dormant building. The change of use proposal was approved by Darlington Council last year, allowing the former bank to be converted into a mixed use restaurant/ hot food takeaway on the ground floor, and two three-bedroom flats above. Now, the construction site has halo illuminated lettering, as well as a website and contact number to place orders. The new restaurant is due to open later this year, and will offer fried chicken and noodles to Darlington town centre. We can’t wait to try them!

What is your favourite part of the job? Definitely meeting the clients, people are interesting and the time passes quickly. At meetings I’ll obtain an understanding of the person I’m helping. I listen to their ‘phrases’, their experiences and viewpoints and their aims become much clearer. Can you tell us the most important thing you’ve learned since starting the business? ‘Client is king’; follow up enquiries timely; deliver what you’ve promised (and consequently don’t promise anything you can’t achieve); ensure the client understands everything and work for their benefit as a priority. Why should people seek independent financial advice, over a different type of investment adviser? It’s about suitability. Greater choice creates a more suitable option, based on a client’s requirements. Some 16

clients are ‘cost-conscious’ others need a higher return, some need a lower risk and so on. An independent adviser can ‘tailor’ an investment and isn’t restricted. How did you decide to become a financial adviser? I can’t say I always wanted to do this job! I had an interest in shares from my late teens and bought a few myself - I was a bit ‘geeky’ I suppose. I’m more a ‘people person’ and combining the interest in investing with this, created a natural role in financial advice. How does working for yourself compare to working in the corporate world? It’s really a personal choice, freedom is greater but then so is responsibility. There are benefits to both of course and it can be more difficult to ‘switch off ’. You’re more accountable, so you take more care in my view. I feel ‘motivated’ to work compared to being ‘told to’.

Father and son to run the Great North Run, in memory of a family member After losing Rachel earlier this year to an aggressive form of oesophageal cancer, Paul and Ben Ryan, her husband and son respectively, have decided to raise some money for St Teresa’s Hospice, by doing the Great North Run.

Rachel’s time with them, they felt it was only right to take part in the event and donate the money they raised to the hospice.

So far, the pair have raised £4,000 for the palace where Rachel was cared for in her final days, with the help of friends and the running club they attend.

Paul has been running for eight years, as part of Quakers Running Club. Although Ben has never ran before, Paul is confident that his son will likely beat him on the day, as long as he sticks to his training plan.

Completing the run

Rachel’s Story Rachel was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer in February this year, and it spread so quickly she was not able to get treatment. This meant she spent the last few days of her life in the hospice. The hospice staff showed Paul, his son’s Ben and Sam, Rachel’s sister Caroline and her friends so much love and care during 26

They’ll be joined by Rachel’s sister, Caroline, her friends and some members of the Quakers Club, including some who volunteer for St Teresa’s already. Their community suppor t fundraiser, Emily Robson, said the hospice are expecting 120 people to run the Great North Run on their behalf in September, hoping to raise in excess of £30,000 in aid of the hospice.

Seaham Food Festival Seaham Food Festival returns on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August. The festival will bring delicious street food, celebrity chefs and more to the County Durham coast. As always, stalls serving up the finest local produce and exciting street food will be at the heart of the Durham County Council event.

Carrot cake traybake This easy carrot cake traybake is perfect for getting kids practicing their cooking skills. Take a handful of ingredients and turn them into a teatime treat

30 mins to prep

Ingredients 200g carrots , peeled 175g soft brown sugar 200g self-raising flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp cinnamon zest 1 orange 2 eggs 150ml sunflower oil

For the icing 50g softened butter 75g icing sugar 200g soft cheese sprinkles (optional)

30mins to cook

makes 6 - 12

Directions

Step one...

Line an 18cm square tin with baking parchment. Ask your grown-up helper to turn the oven on to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grate the carrots on the fine side of the grater, then tip them into a large bowl.

Step two...

Sift the sugar, flour, bicarb and cinnamon on top of the carrot, then add the orange zest and mix everything around a bit.

Step three...

Break the eggs into a bowl (scoop out any bits of shell), then add them to the bowl along with the

oil. Mix everything together well.

Step four...

Scoop the cake mix into your tin and level the top. Ask a grown-up to put it in the oven for 30 minutes or until the cake is cooked. Cool.

Step ﬁve...

To make the icing, mix the butter and icing sugar together, then stir in the soft cheese until smooth.

Step six...

When the cake is cool, spread the top with the icing and cut into squares. Decorate with sprinkles, if you like.

Pixar’s latest outing (and addition to the Toy Story universe), Lightyear, is certainly fun for the entire family. Featuring all of the iconic Buzz moments we know and love from the Toy Story franchise, as well as some new ones (we’ll talk about the pen later), this movie certainly places itself within the Pixar universe in a way that forces the viewer to recognise it as a separate entity to Toy Story. In 1995, Andy got a brand new toy; a character from his favourite movie - Buzz Lightyear. Lightyear is that movie. And what a movie it is. Lightyear embodies every Pixar trope that has ever been established, and then some. The themes of friendship, teamwork and bravery come to the forefront of this movie in a way we haven’t seen for many years. The audience follows Buzz (Chris Evans), as he attempts to reconcile a mistake that left him and his crew trapped on the hostile planet T’Kani Prime. As he tests fuels and rockets in an effort to reach hyperspeed, those left behind on T’Kani Prime continue to live their lives and age, as his four minute mission in space equates to four years on the planet. As he commits to his mission, Buzz loses sight of the people around him and misses out on his best friend's life, eventually returning to the planet to find that she has passed away. Buzz then teams up with Alisha’s granddaughter, and a rag-tag bunch of “rookies”, Mo (voiced by Taika Waititi) and Darby (voiced by Dale Soules), as well as his therapy robot,
