Darlington Hippodrome and Theatre Hullabaloo win prestigious architectural accolade

ajor building projects from across the North East have recently been recognised in high-profile awards celebrating the regeneration, design and conservation of some of the region’s most appreciated architecture. The latest annual RICS Awards took place at Newcastle’s Civic Centre in late April, with Darlington represented by its new cultural hub, the Darlington Hippodrome and Theatre Hullabaloo. The project topped a shortlist of more than 40 builds and designs completed over the preceding 12 months. It claimed the Building Conservation prize for what RICS judges hailed as an exemplary refurbishment, remodelling and extension of the much-loved Grade II-listed Edwardian theatre. Deserved praise for the latest addition to the town’s cultural scene RICS judges commended the team behind the development – including Darlington Borough Council, Space Architects and Willmott Dixon Construction – for its meticulous restoration of the original Edwardian auditorium and entrance, as well as its incorporation of new additions and facilities into the historic structure. The latter included a new promenade gallery reflecting stars and royals among the theatre’s past visitors – such as Queen Victoria – alongside a contemporary cafe, heritage and education resources and a purpose-designed children’s theatre. What were the other highlights of the ceremony? The RICS Awards are held every year to celebrate some of the region’s most inspirational built initiatives, and the skills of the teams responsible for them, across eight categories. Other winners on the night, which was hosted by BBC Look North TV presenter Jeff Brown, included The Green in Hartlepool, which

claimed the Residential award, and 71 Grey Street in Newcastle, which was handed the Commercial accolade. The Green, for example, is a housing regeneration scheme that has helped to breathe new life into Hartlepool’s town centre. It consists of 86 modern homes for rent surrounding a communal garden, and replaced 175 semi-derelict terraced properties. The project team from Placefirst Construction and MCAU Architects was singled out for the attention to detail it had shown with regard to both the internal and external aspects of the properties. Rounding out the list of winners were Sunderland’s Beacon of Light, the Cleveland Community Safety Hub in Middlesbrough, the Northern Spire in Sunderland, Gateshead’s Ravensworth Road Regeneration Scheme and the Spanish City in Whitley Bay. These developments won the Community Benefit, Design through Innovation, Infrastructure, Regeneration and Tourism & Leisure prizes respectively. All of the category winners will go on to compete against other regional winners from across the UK at the national RICS Awards Grand Final in London in October, for the honour of being declared the best in the country in their category. “A diverse range of innovative projects” Chair of the RICS Awards, North East judging panel, Adam Serfontein, who is also managing director at Hanro Group, commented: “A diverse range of innovative projects, of all sizes and budgets, made the shortlist this year and the winners are truly representative of our region’s best and most innovative built projects that are having a significant positive impact on their communities. “The teams behind these winning projects should be very proud of their exceptional achievements and contribution to the region.”

Places to go... WITH THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS RAILCARD TO THE FORTH BRIDGE

he Family and Friends Railcard (F&FR) includes friends because the children you travel with may not be your own. My children are all adults now, but It is possible to travel with someone else’s child (5-15) to get discount from the adult fare. To give a local example, on an offpeak journey from Yarm to Cramlington, the fare is £28.80. But with a child using the F&FR, the fare falls from an undiscounted adult and child fare of £43.20 to £24.50. In other words, it is cheaper to travel standard class with a child than without one. I have often thought there is a potential business in renting out children to save money on rail fares, but this is capable of misinterpretation. I therefore borrowed a family friend, 12 year old Daniel, to make a day trip to Scotland, and after some consultation on a trip to Edinburgh we decided to go a little beyond and try the boat trip in the Forth Estuary and Deep Sea World at North Queensferry, either side of the iconic red Forth Bridge. We had two advance tickets, out with Cross Country from Newcastle, returning with LNER. It’s perfectly legal to mix and match like that since the tickets are issued as two singles. We managed to get to and from the Scottish capital for under £20. A separate return to North Queensferry (£4.95, saving 85p), delivered us first to Dalmeny, a small station above but close to South Queensferry. We walked down the road into the small town, then east along the coastline towards the towering Forth Bridge to Hawes Pier, virtually beneath it, where our comfortable vessel the Forth Belle awaited for a trip to see the three bridges and Inchcolm Island. As it was out of season we could not land on the island, where the jetty was being repaired, but we saw plenty of bird and sea life, including seals lying on a navigation buoy. I had a Dalwhinnie Winter’s Gold whisky from the bar (following a previous visit there for this column) and Daniel enjoyed a cola. I must say the sound system on the boat was first class: a mixture of recorded material, with sensible use of sound effects,

and live commentary. We went under the two road bridges (opened 1964 and 2017), and the Forth Bridge (1890) with trains running across frequently. Daniel calculated it was 122 steps up to Dalmeny station, plus a further 14 up and 12 down, and we took a train over the bridge to North Queensferry, which was well signposted and all downhill to the Deep Sea World, an aquarium famous for its collection of large sand tiger sharks. Opened in 1993 in a disused quarry, its main attraction is the 112 m (367 ft) long transparent acrylic underwater viewing tunnel, which is one of the longest of its kind in the world. We were delighted to be offered a special visit behind the scenes to see how fish are propagated and look over the viewing tunnel. In 2005, the aquarium opened a new seal enclosure, housing resident seals as well as injured ones rescued by the SSPCA. Only buses run over the older road bridge now, so we made our way to the Ferrytoll park and ride (strange name: no ferry, no toll!) for a surreal ride on a solo Stagecoach express, where we were the only vehicle visible on the bridge, to Edinburgh and our train home. www.deepseaworld.com www.forthtours.com

Blackwell Grange reaches new heights of hospitality with 4 Star rating

ollowing a visit from an AA inspector, Darlington’s Blackwell Grange Hotel has been awarded an official 4 Star rating.

The historic hotel, off Grange Road, came under new ownership in 2017 and achieving this prestigious rating was an ambition from the very start. Since then, a multimillion pound investment in the building – which dates all the way back to 1693 – has worked to preserve the hotel’s unique character, while bringing it in line with modern requirements.

“It is clear to see the investment that has taken place within the hotel to date and this is fantastic. The rolling programme of bedroom and en-suite refurbishment continues to add value. Housekeeping was diligent and attentive congratulations are certainly worthy to the team.”

General manager at the hotel, Dawn Raine, said of the achievement: “Congratulations to each member of the team that has been involved and supporting Blackwell Grange in achieving the 4* rating. When our new owners in 2017 set out their vision to have the Hotel reach a 4* standard I had every confidence we would achieve this and knew the hard work and refurbishment process was a small price to pay for the owner’s commitment, investment and loyalty to the Hotel.

Originally built as a family home for industrialist George Allan, the Blackwell Grange Hotel stands within a vast wooded parkland. The building became a hotel in 1970 and now features three function suites, 108 bedrooms, three bars, nine further function rooms, and a restaurant and leisure facilities – including a swimming pool and gym.

“This is an important step on the journey of Blackwell Grange Hotel. The hotel is a magnificent building which is steeped in history and I am so proud of everyone associated with our new 4* rating and in the AA’s words, I also say we have a team to be proud of.”

The AA inspector who visited the hotel certainly had some complementary words to say about the environment they stayed in, and the service they received: “In terms of the AA Quality Standards the Blackwell Grange Hotel has successfully achieved a Four-Star Hotel rating.

Over the years, this longstanding emblem of the town has played host to many a wedding, and many more a traditional Sunday roast – and all guests can now expect an AA approved 4-Star service on their next visit.

A Conversation with...

Hayley Thompson Hayley Thompson is one of the Business Owners who help with the running of The Majestic Theatre based on Bondgate, Darlington. Hayley has many volunteers who are on hand to help with booking the shows, running the programmes, managing the bar, running the box office; the list is endless but they wouldn’t have it any other way. Here we got the inside knowledge from Hayley herself and we managed to find out what goes on behind the doors of The Majestic Theatre. How did you become involved with The Majestic Theatre? Me and my partners helped the previous business. When we found out it was closing, we were determined to keep the doors open and run it ourselves. What does your role at the theatre involve? I am one of the business owners who runs The Majestic. As a team we all help out by booking the shows that hire our theatre, plus run the shows and any other events that may want to come here. We literally do everything within The Majestic, including the bar, box office, cleaning. The list goes on and on! But we love it! What is it that makes the venue so special? Personally the venue is so special to us because we have been here since day one and watched it grow. We have been here throughout everything that has taken place! The good and the bad. Everyone who comes here loves to look around and see how different it used to be from years ago. The Majestic used to be The Odeon and then Rileys Snooker Club. The building brings back memories for a lot of customers who come here. It makes us so proud to see a person’s reaction when they come in for the first time. They tend to spot the windows – which are the original ones from many years ago! What would you consider to be the greatest challenges and rewards in running a venue like this in the 21st century? The greatest challenge is to keep the theatre alive! We do this because we love it and many other people love to be entertained. The arts are falling at the moment which is

so sad! But we are determined to keep the theatre doors open and to continue to entertain all of our customers who come here. The reward is that we are doing a good job. We have a wonderful team who are so supportive with The Majestic and we are all volunteers. We are not council run; we are simply a small team fighting to keep our theatre alive in a beautiful venue – which is a bonus. What have been your favourite moments in your job so far? What a hard question….. I can’t pick one particular favourite moment because there are so many. However, I would have to say when we have a successful night – working as a team and having fun along the way. It’s always a bonus when the company who have performed comment on how wonderful the venue is and they want to come back. That’s a lovely feeling to have. You have plenty of shows and events each month, which has been your favourite to date? I love a good pantomime! I would have to say Spooky Lagoon or Liam Mellor’s Cracking Easter panto. However, we are huge fans of music and we would have to say Coldplace! You must get plenty of reviews and feedback from the different shows and events, what has been your favourite piece of feedback? Nish Kumar was great! He told us how much of a perfect venue we have for comedians. Not too big and not too small. He commented on how well we have done to keep the place running.

Are there any upcoming shows or events at the theatre that you would especially recommend? I would highly recommend Red Riding Hood as it is a family pantomime for only £3! And also Snow White; tickets are very cheap. We also have an offer for every two tickets of Snow White purchased, you also receive a free ticket for Red Riding Hood. I highly recommend you to buy pantomime tickets as they soon sell out closer to the time and we have plenty of people missing out! Both shows are performed by professionals this year.

Could you tell us something about the theatre or your role there that you think people might be surprised to hear? I would say that we are all volunteers. We do this because we love it.

We are wishing you and The Majestic Theatre all the best for the upcoming months, what are your future ambitions for it? We are dying to get wheelchair access in the building! That is our main priority. However, it is so hard as we are not a charity. It’s such a shame that nothing was put in place beforehand. But we will continue fighting to put something in place!

How would you sum up the current arts, entertainment and events scenes in Darlington? I think Darlington has some great places for the arts! The

Being introduced to people who all share a passion for something. Everyone seems to have their own project or workplace that they love and everyone likes to help one another out.

Strawberry meringue roulade. Ingredients.

Method.

Preheat the oven to 220C/180V Fan/Gas 6 5 egg whites 275g/10oz caster Grease a swiss roll tin and line with baking paper sugar Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl with an 20g/2oz flaked electric mixer on a high-speed until very stiff almonds Gradually add the sugar, 1 teaspoon at a time and, 150ml 5fl oz double keeping the mixer on a high-speed, whisk well cream between each addition. Whisk until very, very stuff and glossy and all the sugar has been added. 200ml/7fl oz Greekstyle yoghurt Spread the meringue mixture into the lined tin 225g/8oz and sprinkle with the almonds. Put the tin in the oven and bake for about 6 minutes until golden strawberries, hulled Lower the temperature to 160C/140C Fan/Gas 3 Icing sugar, for and bake for a further 15 minutes, until crisp and dusting firm to the touch

Remove the meringue from the oven and turn almond-side down onto a sheet of baking paper Remove the paper from the base of the cooked meringue and allow to cool for 10 minutes Lightly whip the cream and mix with the yoghurt. Spread evenly over the meringue Cut the strawberries into quarters and sprinkle over the cream mixture Roll up the meringue firmly, using the paper to help you, from the long end of the roulade. It is essential you keep the roll very tight. Wrap in baking paper and chill before serving When you are ready to serve, dust with icing sugar and cut into slices

Extra security boost at Durham Tees Valley Airport

Following a consultation with tenants at the airport, Durham Tees Valley Airport (DTVA) has announced an extension of its partnership with Close Protection Security Limited. The Teesside-based security firm, which already operates out of the airport, will now provide additional patrols around the landside area of the airport.The agreement will work on a rolling basis, but is intended to assuage some of the security concerns recently raised by businesses and staff who work on the airport site. A partnership that works for everyone Shaun Woods, airport manager at DTVA, said: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with Close Protection Security. We already have a close relationship with the company thanks to the security work at St George Hotel [on the DTVA site].The move followed concerns raised by residents, which we take very seriously.” Directors of Close Protection Security, Chris Petty and Glenn Bartlett, added:

“As a proud Teesside firm, we’re passionate about our airport and we’re excited to be playing our own small part in helping both the Tees Valley Mayor and Stobart Group return it to the successful operation our region wants.” A welcome return to public ownership This welcome announcement is another step in a positive direction for DTVA, coming in the wake of the airport returning to public ownership after years in the private sector. The latter was an election pledge of Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen, and his efforts resulted in the Peel Group’s 89 per cent shareholding in the airport and land being transferred to the Mayor and Combined Authority. On the latest announcement, Houchen said: “Now that our airport has returned to public ownership, I’ll be doing everything I can to ensure local businesses are at the front of the queue for new contracts. Chris and Glenn at CPS have done a fantastic job so far, and I’m delighted we’re able to give them some extra work to bulk up security on the airport site.”

FILM REVIEW: THE

HUSTLE

DM Rating: On first approaching The Hustle, you might imagine that any attempt at a caper combining the not-inconsiderable talents of Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway as two ambitious female con artists would represent pretty decent comic value. This perception might persist even as you become aware of a premise that is effectively just a gender-swapped version of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which in turn was a remake of Bedtime Story from 1964.

Sure, even in the late ‘80s, the notion of any film based on two men (Michael Caine and Steve Martin, you may remember) competing to swindle an American heiress out of tens of thousands of dollars on the Mediterranean coast was starting to look a little antiquated.

All of this leaves Thomas Westerburg – a clumsy billionaire app entrepreneur who the ladies designate as their target dupe as they compete with each other for the right to remain at the fictional resort of Beaumont-sur-Mer – as perhaps the movie’s most intriguing and likeable character, at least until the denouement.

However, sweeping cultural change in the West since then – we’re referring to a certain other ‘W’ word, Weinstein – would seemingly present plenty of scope for a sharply feminist reimagining of the classic tale. The female casting doesn’t translate into a sisterhood epic If you aren’t familiar with The Hustle’s aforementioned predecessors, you probably won’t detect the wealth of elements that, while they may appear on first inspection to be fresh, are actually just by-rote retellings of Scroundels, save for instances where change is forced by technological advances or the switched gender of the protagonists. Certain other things are even more resistant to change. Wilson is, once again, cast in the role of what the audience might be forgiven for thinking is the only type of Aussie she knows how to play – the brash one. As the film begins, we are already in on her character, Penny Rust’s encounter with her latest dupe, dropping into a bar to persuade a man to fork out for a

The somewhat more elegant woman Rust meets on a train, Josephine Chesterfield, en route to the French Riviera to seek more rich men to swindle, at least gives Hathaway an opportunity to try out various fake accents and look svelte in clingy dresses, if little else.

Unassuming escapism – but don’t expect anything else In short, it becomes apparent early on that The Hustle is not quite the relentlessly hilarious and acidic post-#MeToo revenge fantasy that even its poster implies it to be, with its line “They’re giving dirty rotten men a run for their money”. Even aside from the subject of the authenticity, or lack thereof, of the film’s feminist framing, certain elements simply make no sense, such as a training montage in which Josephine tasks Penny with, among other things, throwing knives at a target for no apparent reason. While, then, The Hustle may provide you with some satisfying summer escapism, such silliness and frivolity is where this missed opportunity of a flick’s ambitions start and end.
