Welcome to the July edition of Darlington Monthly! Let’s face it: this is one of the finest months of the year to be a Briton, especially in 2018. It doesn’t seem to get dark until actual bedtime, there are the latter stages of the World Cup still to enjoy, and you’ve got another new issue of your favourite free monthly magazine to leaf through... What’s more, by flicking to our usual events listings on page 42, you can get even more great ideas for things to do in and around Darlington throughout July. Alternatively, of course, you could head to the cinema – our copywriter, Gavin Lenaghan, reviews Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on page 12. Then, there’s the option of simply getting ‘out and about’ in the sun. Maybe you could have a stroll around beautiful Darlington town centre and pop into the Al Forno restaurant on Skinnergate (page 16), for instance, for the most delectable Italian cuisine, or discover the quirkiest and most interesting shops in your area as part of Independent Retailer Month (page 38)? As always, we’re immensely grateful to our advertisers here at Darlington Monthly – we aren’t kidding when we say the magazine wouldn’t be in your hands without them. So please do make use of their services, mentioning us when you do! You can also become an advertiser yourself – just call 07500 828 396 or email sales@ darlingtonmonthly.co.uk, and we’ll tell you everything you need to know about our discounted long-term plans. Anyway, that’s it for now. Enjoy this month’s magazine, and don’t be afraid to give us your feedback so that we can continue making Darlington Monthly the very best it can be!

Search to Find the Perfect Bungalow Brings Linda to Scholars Park

A frustration with a lack of new build bungalows attracted a new resident to join the growing community at Scholars Park in Darlington from Homes by Esh. Linda Ness (65) was frustrated by a long and unsuccessful search for a bungalow after several years at her former home in Stockton. Linda comments: “I wanted a new build to make sure I could benefit from a more low maintenance home so I was quick to go and take a look around Scholars Park and get a feel for the property and the area surrounding the development. “I was delighted to see that the bungalow was exactly what I was looking for – a semi-detached two bedroom home with space, privacy and everything I needed. I was particularly attracted to the lovely honey coloured stone exterior which has such a unique and different look that I knew I’d found the right home straightaway.”

DMALAW ‘The Link’ is our very own ‘law shop’ walk-in centre (and still the only one we know of in the country we may add!). We are now well in to our 3rd year here at The Link and are very much a part of the local community in Darlington. We are a legal walk-in centre where, there is no hassle, no stress and all our initial consultations are free of charge. In the time we have been open we have proudly assisted over 2000 members of the local community. We offer free help and guidance and people can come and speak to us at any time during our opening hours and don’t need to make an appointment to do so. You can just come through our door and speak with our solicitors, lawyers and advisors. We have experience across a range of areas of law; family matters, crime, personal injury, wills and probate, employment, debt recovery, civil litigation, contract

disputes, housing, medical negligence, conveyancing and many others. We opened The Link in direct response to the cuts to legal aid funding to help people access justice. Our aim is to help, support, guide and encourage people who have legal issues but aren’t certain what they need to do to resolve them, or when they feel there is nowhere else to turn in their hour of need. This is exactly what The Link is about; what we do; who we are and we are very proud of that! What does the future hold for The Link? Well, we are going to be here for at least another 3 years and in that time we are sure that we will continue to get bigger and better and assist more and more of you. Why is that? Because we think The Link works! We are at 40 Skinnergate, Darlington and all our consultations are free of charge and in confidence.

Film review: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom So, the classic cinematic formula demonstrating that humans and dinosaurs still don’t mix any better than they have done at any point since 1993, has made its latest return to our big screens in the form of the fifth instalment of the Jurassic Park series. But is this, on this occasion Juan Antonio Bayona-directed, epic just another excuse to print money with the spectacle of beasts gobbling sorry souls up, or is there still a worthier and more profound point to it all? Navigating an ethical quandary Fallen Kingdom does at least make a fist of the latter, wheeling out Jeff Goldblum – back in his immortal role as chaos theory expert Dr Ian Malcolm – for the briefest of cameos to declare to the United States Senate that the dinosaurs still living on the notorious Isla Nublar should be left to perish. He’s weighing in on the matter of the monsters’ fate in the face of an impending volcanic eruption on the island, positing that the latest dinosaurs’ extinction would constitute nature correcting the mistake made by John Hammond (the character portrayed by the late Richard Attenborough in past Jurassic Park flicks) in cloning the dinosaurs all of those years ago. Given all of the trouble they’ve caused already – and when we say ‘trouble’, we mean the destruction and closure of the island’s former theme park and luxury resort, Jurassic World, three years earlier and a subsequent $800 million in lawsuits – many a casual viewer might be inclined to agree with Dr Malcolm’s assessment. But of course, there always have to be some ‘bleeding hearts’ who come along to ruin everything (and give us a film), roles played here by Jurassic World’s onetime operations manager, turned dinosaur-rights activist Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and former dinosaur trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt).

But it all goes wrong... inevitably The goal of our two-some is to head to Isla Nublar to save the species by moving them to a sanctuary elsewhere – a grandiose vision only made possible by the money of Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), who was Hammond’s original business partner in building Jurassic Park. However, we soon learn that it is Lockwood’s unscrupulous younger associate, Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) who is to serve as Fallen Kingdom’s fakesmiling stock villain, on account of his plans to weaponise the beasts and sell them to arms dealers at an auction. Cue another series of ever-more improbable hair’s breadth escapes on which the Jurassic franchise has traded with gradually diminishing critical returns from the beginning, with key players including nerdy erstwhile Jurassic World IT technician Franklin Webb (Justice Smith) and one-time Marine, now paleoveterinarian Dr. Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda). The former, for instance, manages to narrowly evade becoming one beast’s lunch despite his ladder escape route sliding down as lava dribbles around him. Meanwhile, the latter strives to keep alive Blue, the last surviving Velociraptor once trained by, and still held in affection by Grady. Fallen Kingdom’s attempt to pose the ethical quandary of whether we should feel a social responsibility to save creatures that want to eat us is a slightly clunky one. Nonetheless, the film’s central appeal will always be in the raw suspense, thrills and spills that are doled out in generous quantities here, and which do make it worth the watch.

Employment Round Up

If you are contributing to a work based pension scheme, have you read the small print? It would pay to do so, if you haven’t. Why? Well although more than five million UK businesses recently complied with their staging date for auto-enrolment, so helping to protect their employees’ finances for the future when they retire, not all companies may have considered protection for the present. Superb, fresh Italian food, beautiful wine and excellent service Darlington has been home to Al Forno restaurant on Skinnergate for over five years. The family run restaurants continue to grow and last year a third restaurant was added to the chain. The Ingleby Barwick addition opened in Summer 2017 and the flagship restaurant on Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough has been open for 13 years. The restaurant prides itself on ‘Fresh is Best’, uses local suppliers and employs a team of 27 staff in the Darlington restaurant alone. The restaurant offers a daily two course special menu and still hosts a weekly Steak Night which is less than £30 per couple. The Italian themed afternoon tea is one of the newest additions to the menu and it’s a mix of culinary delights including antipasto, bruschetta and Italian pastries. Definitely something a bit different. The restaurant has established itself as a firm favourite in the town and it has sponsored numerous youth football teams and donated to a number of charities over the years. For more information or to reserve a table, visit al-forno.co.uk or call 01325 466585.

Green Theatre Celebrates Its Tenth Year In 2008 two lovers of Shakespeare sought permission to stage his work in the newly refurbished South Park, thus reviving a long tradition of open air Shakespeare in the town. There followed some memorable productions of Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, Twelfth Night and others. Some of the plays were set in different areas of the park with the audience following around. Others were set on and in front of the restored Victorian bandstand. The weather, however, was not always as supportive as our audiences. While provision was made to keep people dry, it was clear that something more substantive was required, but could not be justified in cost terms. What, with the weather and some security issues it was reluctantly agreed that Green Theatre should come indoors. So began a period of productions for smaller audiences in the Gallery of Crown Street Library. Abridged versions of Hamlet and Macbeth and last year a full-length production of The Comedy of Errors, were well received. This Spring Green Theatre departed from its usual theme to give a reading of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood as part of Darlington’s Arts Festival.

seat theatre in the Hullabaloo, adjacent to Darlington Hippodrome on Borough Road. Community theatre in Darlington has fostered many talented actors. Three young actors from the town have, or are appearing in West End productions this year and two new groups, Hogarth Players and Dutch Courage Theatre, have appeared on the Darlington scene. We hope that Green Theatre’s collaboration with The Hippodrome’s management team will pave the way for other Darlington community theatre groups to take advantage of a professional theatre setting and to encourage the many talented amateur actors, playwrights, and young people of Darlington who aspire to a stage and screen career. I contacted this firm to completely change our existing, poorly founded brickwork and damp course as we had persistent damp for many years on our 1960’s bungalow. “Mick the Brick” and the team are a tremendous asset to Findleys and achieved a wonderful job. So good, in fact, we have decided to repoint the rest of the bungalow as it now looks shabby in comparison. Excellent work, excellent skills, and the most polite and friendly tradespeople we have ever met. Fabulous outfits and you won’t be disappointed. Take our word for it. We look forward to our next job in June, we were astonished they did so much. Thank you Gemma and Timmani who kept us updated at every step of the way and to Brian the manager. Thank you all and thank you for the lovely The Posthill’s flowers which arrived today from Mr Findley.

The finest restaurant in Darlington Restaurant Celebrus located on Bondgate in Darlington has now been open for eight months. The food continues to receive rave reviews and the man behind the fine dining restaurant is Head Chef & Owner, David Garlinge. David who previously worked for Gordon Ramsay has also worked alongside other celebrated chefs, including Kenny Atkinson, The Raby Hunt’s James Close and Jason Atherton. He’s also stormed his way through to the heats of MasterChef: The Professionals and secured his place in the semi-finals in 2013. Restaurant Celebrus which was once home to Ivy House and Ochis has been transformed and it offers the town’s food lovers an informal fine dining experience. The menus are designed to showcase a globally influenced blend of refined food and sources where practical from local suppliers. The menu 24

changes frequently depending on what’s in season and always includes meat, vegetarian and fish dishes. A number of events have also been introduced including a Champagne & Food pairing evening as well as a seafood night. The restaurant also boasts an art and a prestige wine collection. The restaurant is family run as wife, Gemma has recently joined the business on a fulltime basis. The couple who got married in May have three children and are extremely passionate about their business. With the recent introduction of the Early Bird menu and the three course lunch for less than £20, it’s certainly a place which will continue to attract widespread acclaim. For more information or to reserve a table, visit restaurantcelebrus.co.uk or call 01325 528210.

Be clever in your search In addition to finding the basic price, property type, and number of bedrooms, when you use a Property Search Engine you can refine your search even further. Discover keywords such as ‘outhouse’ or ‘parking’ and use tools such as map search and travel times to reach specific locations. Alternatively, you can pop into your local JW Wood branch and we’ll do all of this for you. Get the most out of property viewings Ask direct questions on viewings, such as, if there have been any major works or extensions to the property. Take notes as it’s easy to get mixed up when you have been on several viewings. Negotiate It’s still always worth negotiating on the price – as a first-time buyer with nothing to sell, you’re in a strong position. Still unsure? Contact our team at JW Wood Darlington Estate Agents on 01325 485 151 or find us online at jww.co.uk.

Benjamin Kerry, Jak HQ

www.jakhq.com

Chester-le-Street cricket club teams up with local marketing agency Jak HQ to help them reach their full potential Chester-le-Street cricket club and local full-service creative agency Jak HQ (www.jakhq.com) have teamed up to kick-start an exciting new venture that will propel the club to new heights. This is set to include a brand new website alongside a complete marketing strategy, helping to promote the club’s growing services to new and wider audiences. Situated in the heart of the town, the cricket club is a thriving hub within the local area, hosting many events throughout the year such as boxing and fireworks, as well as providing conference facilities and suites for private functions. By choosing to work closely with Jak HQ, another local business, the club is hoping to promote its additional services and to demonstrate its heightened community focus. The club chose the agency thanks to their longstanding reputation as a company that has helped many businesses of all sizes reach their potential through web design, digital marketing and print. 28

Jak HQ has crafted bespoke websites for a number of growing businesses throughout the North East most notably Lanchester Garden Centre and Findley Roofing & Building who have both gone from strength to strength thanks to Jak HQ’s expertise. The cricket club’s new website will work in harmony with a proposed digital marketing strategy that will target audiences on their social media channels and encourage more sponsors to advertise around the pitch. Without taking any focus away from cricket, the website will also give people a chance to order new kit, view and book their place at upcoming events, and opt to become a member of the club which will entitle them to a range of benefits. Keep your eyes peeled for the launch of the cricket club’s new website, but in the meantime, you can visit their Facebook and Twitter pages to find out more about upcoming events.

Linthorpe Beds - supporting more than 25 years’ restful sleep in the North East. Buying a bed or mattress is a major investment, so you have to be sure the company you choose has the knowledge and experience to advise you on the best night’s sleep possible. Linthorpe Beds is a well-established family-owned business, which prides itself on exceptional customer service. The company has recently opened a new store in Darlington and has a massive range of beds to view in three showrooms. In 1991, the first shop opened on Linthorpe Road, Linthorpe, an affluent suburb of Middlesbrough. Since then, the family and hand-picked sales force undergo regular and thorough training to ensure the highest possible standards of customer service. Most of the staff have been working at Linthorpe Beds for years (some for more than 20 years). The company now has three huge retail stores: Russell Street in Darlington, Portrack Lane in Stockton-on-Tees and St Helen Retail Park, Bishop Auckland. The family chose the name “Linthorpe” not just because the first shop was based on the road of the same name but also to create strong foundations in the community.

Linthorpe Beds has moved with the times too, operating online with the same high-quality level of service that has been vital to the company’s success - visit www.linthorpebeds.co.uk. The online operation has grown alongside the stores and there’s now a fantastic responsive website which means you can easily browse products and content from multiple devices. There is also a dedicated internet sales line for any queries you may have, and just like the retail stores, members of staff have been thoroughly trained and will be happy to assist you in any way they can. For more than a quarter of a century, Linthorpe Beds has built a great working relationship with brands and manufacturers all over the UK. It stocks Silentnight, Sleepeezee, Gainsborough, Rest Assured and lots more. Whether you need a new mattress, divan set or bed frame, there is something for everyone. If you have any further questions, or would like advice on a product, please visit www.linthorpebeds.co.uk/ contact-us, or pop into one of the stores - staff will be happy to help you get a restful night’s sleep.

Double chocolate cherry brownies Ingredients. 350g/12oz plain chocolate (minimum 55% cocoa solids) 250g/9oz unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing

These quick, easy brownies combine chocolate and decadent cherries for a rich, fruity flavour – just bake and go!

Method. • Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3. Grease a 30x23cm/12x9in baking tin with butter then line the base and sides with baking paper.

3 large free-range eggs 250g/9oz dark soft brown sugar 110g/4oz plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 150g/5½oz fresh cherries, cut in half, stones removed 150g/5½oz white chocolate, roughly chopped 1-2 tbsp cocoa powder, for dusting

• Spoon the brownie mixture into the prepared tin, then scatter over the white chocolate and the remaining cherries.

• Heat the plain chocolate and butter in a saucepan over a low heat until just melted and well combined, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly (at least 5 minutes).

• Bake the brownies in the oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the surface is cracked and a skewer inserted into the centre of the brownies comes out with just a little mixture sticking to it. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool completely in the tin, on a wire rack.

• Meanwhile, whisk the eggs with the sugar in a large bowl until thick, pale and creamy.

• To serve, dust the brownies with cocoa powder, then cut into squares and remove from the tin.

• Whisk the cooled chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, then gently fold in the flour, baking powder and half the cherries until just combined.

Quakers Zone

Our monthly report on Darlington 1883 from Ray Simpson, Communications and Media Manager

Wembley winner Chris returns to Darlington for Legends game Wembley winner Chris Senior returns to Darlington later this month to play for a Darlington legends team against a World Cup winner. Senior, the striker who scored that unforgettable dramatic winner for Quakers in the 2011 FA Trophy final, has agreed to play in the Marathonbet #NonLeagueChallenge Legends game on Sunday 29th July at Blackwell Meadows. Every Darlo fan will always remember the moment when Senior’s header hit the back of the net against Mansfield that day, and now Chris has agreed to put his boots on again for the match against the Marathon Bet Legends. “I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “My eyes lit up when I realised who else will be on the field. It will be great to see the Darlo fans again as well. It’s also chance for my son to see me play football in the flesh – of course I’ve shown him the video of the game!” The Darlington legends team for the second half of the match, will be managed by Craig Liddle, who was voted as one of Darlington’s best ever players in the Farewell to Feethams celebrations in 2003, and to cement his standing as an all time hero, took over the managerial reins and kept the team going during that precarious third administration in 2012.

He’s now on the coaching staff at Middlesbrough, and he’s agreed to manage the Darlo Legends side for the second half, and maybe turn out himself for a few minutes later in the game. Tickets are going well for the game on Sunday 29th July. They are on sale from Quaker Retail in the Dolphin Centre, price £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and children over the age of 5, under 5s are free. (Please note that we are expecting a big crowd, all under 5s will need a ticket even though they are free), A share of the gate receipts will go to a nominated charity. The Marathon Bet Legends team is being managed by 1966 England World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst, famous for that magnificent hat trick against West Germany in the 4-2 win, and one of the most wellknown footballers ever. Also included in the squad are Chris Waddle, Emile, Heskey, George Boateng, Julio Arca, Joleon Lescott, Alan Stubbs and several other big names who will be announced closer to the day of the game. The Darlington first team will be in action in the first half of the match, which kicks off at 2pm.

`Lost for Words' works Many of the collieries in Durham closed around 50 years ago. At Wheatley Hill, local groups formed a committee to erect a statue ('The Last Shift)' to mark the 50th anniversary of the closure of the local pit. The group plan a time capsule and a 'Lost for Words' (LfW) analyst was asked 'Could you write a memorial poem for the capsule' and he wrote it. This shows LfW's purpose and method. The analyst checked the objective, set the concepts and wrote the words. Simple, but it needs broad experience/interests and a way with words. In business, these skills are used throughout to 'get the message' across. And for informal staff, member and public communication. Done well, it inspires confidence: badly it's a joke. LfW analysts learnt in such backgrounds.

LfW can help individuals. For example; on job enquiries an analyst would study the applicant's skills and the job target and prepare an eloquent letter for joint editing: a personal letter not a C.V. Cost would be agreed in advance with ÂŁ10-20 being the objective. To churches/chapels an analyst (Christian) offers seasonal booklets containing Christian prose/verse. Each contains up to twelve original poems aiming for some new work in each issue. There is choice on contents. Such booklets have been produced for 3/4 years and are well received by the public. The costs recover delivery postage. These examples show how LfW works. Put this concept to your society for newsletters or special meetings. Include organising these and you will see LfW's scope. Then contact LfW.

The last shift

by Frank Robinson

So, all that life was honest toil just digging in your pit. For dirty coal the loser’s gold and we dug loads of it.

You caught us young, you made us old and stole our life away. What did you give us for our lives: but blackness every day.

So farewell then this life of mine. Farewell you restless soul. This one last shift becomes my gift to you, you great big hole.

You took my friends and made us slaves on each long grinding day. You found the sun and harvest moons and hid them all away.

What did we give you in return for that but loyalty. The darkness glows and friendships grow Forever they will be!

And while you kept this place alive; pit heaps by the acre. Its tears and sighs and goodbyes, to you, old widow maker?

Shop local this July – it’s Independent Retailer Month When Tesco recently announced the closure of its nonfood online retail arm,Tesco Direct, it spelt especially bad news for the independent retailers using it as a selling platform. It’s particularly unfortunate that Tesco Direct will be closing on 9th July 2018, as this will be well into Independent Retailer Month – an annual campaign aimed at encouraging people to see the benefits of shopping local. The campaign has shed light on the value of forgoing the usual retail behemoths. What is Independent Retailer Month really about? Retail guru Clare Rayner launched independent Retailer Month in 2011. You might already be familiar with Clare as ‘The Retail Champion’ who has long flown the flag for start-up and small businesses in the UK. She has been a guest on various media outlets, including BBC News, and has been recruited by the Federation of Small Businesses as a Real Life Entrepreneur Champion. She has continued to oversee Independent Retailer Month as it has gained momentum. Clare also founded Support for Independent Retail, the broader campaign of which Independent Retailer Month is a part. Clare knows, as do other advocates of Independent Retailer Month, the distinct difference that independent retailers and consumer-facing businesses make to their local communities. Towns, high streets and villages are all enlivened – both socially and commercially – by these businesses. Furthermore, statistics back up the worth of independent traders. Research has revealed that when someone spends £1 with a local, independent business, 50p to 70p of this money returns to the local economy. This is money that 38

helps local traders and their employees and suppliers to continue running their businesses and therefore give back to the community. Meanwhile, when £1 is spent on a purchase from an online or out-of-town business, only 5p goes back to the local economy of the person who made this purchase and spent this money. However, the campaign isn’t just about helping local businesses to stay afloat or build on their success. Independent Retailer Month is also intended to draw attention to how the customer experience differs with independent businesses. Customers can benefit from more unique products and a higher standard of service; the all-round experience is often more positive.

How can you Retailer Month?

support

Independent

The obvious answer is by seeking out independent retailers from which to make purchases – and you can do that more easily thanks to Independent Retailer Month. Campaigners have set up an online directory that you can search for details of UK independent retailers. You could find this directory especially valuable if someone’s birthday is coming up and you don’t want to be scrambling for the ideal present or wasting time perusing shops that don’t offer the right products. If you run an independent retailer, even an online-only one, you can add your business to the directory, free of charge. The directory is located at www.independentshops. co.uk, while you can learn more about Independent Retailer Month at www.independentretailermonth.co.uk.
