Notable Birthday Neil Armstrong, August 5th 1930 This year, the 5th of August, would have marked Neil Armstrong’s 90th birthday. It’s almost impossible to find someone who doesn’t know who Neil Armstrong is; he took one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. Yes, this American astronaut and aeronautical engineer was the first person to walk on the moon. Armstrong was born in 1930, near Ohio’s Wapakoneta in the USA. He always had a passion for keeping his feet off the ground – as a child, he took flying lessons at the grassy Wapakoneta airfield and earned a student flight certificate on his sixteenth birthday. In 1947, when Armstrong was just 17, he began studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue University and was the second in his family to receive further schooling. His impressive education opened several doors; after a stint in the Navy, he became an experimental research test pilot and, in 1958, an employee of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Though he has a rich and exciting history, Armstrong is most acclaimed for being the first person to walk on the moon, on 20th July 1969. Surprisingly, this astronaut was famously known for being reticent about his achievements. Instead of basking in the glory of leaving the first ever footprints on the moon, he instead preferred to focus on the team that got him there.

On 7th August 2012, at 82 years of age, Armstrong passed away following a complicated surgery to relieve his coronary artery disease. He left behind a dazzling legacy – and, to this day, no one has yet to replace his moonwalk with their own.

Darlington restoration company lands £1 million of work While all of us have naturally sought to make the smoothest and most successful possible transitions to our post-lockdown lives in the wake of the disruption of the coronavirus crisis, few firms in the area have arguably enjoyed a better restart than Stone Technical Services (STS). The business, which specialises in restoration, conservation, lightning protection and general maintenance projects, has scooped up £1 million of work since it reopened after the lockdown. That reopening took place on 1st June, after the company’s implementation of a range of health and safety measures. Firm confident of ending 2020 with a “flourish” Recent work landed by the company has included restoration works on historic chimneys at the Royal Courts of Justice, as well as masonry and roof repairs at Durham Miners Hall, and lightning protection projects for Newcastle-based Karbon Homes.

The team has also secured work refurbishing a facade at Charnborough Town Hall in Loughborough and repairing bay windows at Queen’s Quay. Managing director Richard Pavlou said of the exciting developments: “Lockdown was tough for us; we didn’t lay off any of our team but with only a select few working from home to maintain client and supplier contact, it was so important that we hit the ground running. “Securing this new business in our first three weeks back is great news. “It’s been a hard time for everyone in our sector but we’ve built up a solid reputation across the country for being able to offer a variety of services, efficiently which I am sure will see us flourish in the remainder of the year.”

Council leader salutes Darlington residents’ “resilience and strength” The head of Darlington Borough Council has thanked local residents and frontline workers for their efforts in helping to minimise the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the authority area. A report by the borough council said the tragedy of more than 80 deaths and over 410 cases among its residents would have been worse in the absence of the coordinated response of the government, the public, the NHS, care workers, volunteers and the council. “My thoughts are with all of them” Councillor Heather Scott praised the “resilience and strength” of people living in Darlington, adding: “I’d like to pay tribute to those who have sadly lost their lives to this dreadful illness – some 84 Darlington families have lost a loved one in the most difficult circumstances and my thoughts are with all of them.

Cllr Scott said she was “extremely proud” of how council personnel had responded and adapted to the changes and risks brought upon them by the crisis. She drew attention to the Community Hub, which takes its staff from across the authority and created a service within days that ensured the delivery of food and medical supplies to shielding and vulnerable people.

“To our NHS staff and our care workers on the frontline we say – thank you. You have faced the worst in recent weeks and helped some of the most vulnerable people in our society at often great personal sacrifice.”

Looking towards recovery The council leader was at pains to underline that the virus “has not gone away” – and therefore urged local residents to continue following social distancing guidance. However, she also emphasised the importance of the area’s recovery, amid concerns about the pandemic’s impact on business.

The pandemic also put pressure on the council’s key services, in addition to services launched specifically in response to the emergency. The April-to-June period saw the authority work to find accommodation for 359 homeless people, many of whom a council update on the coronavirus crisis described as representing “some of the hidden homeless and sofa surfers”. The council’s officers have also ensured the continuation of all essential services throughout the virus outbreak, especially for vulnerable residents. 7,550 welfare phone calls were made, while staff also responded to 1,335 emergency callouts, undertook 1,849 lifts for clients who had fallen, and delivered 697 food packages and 258 medicine packages.

While encouraging people to support Darlington’s businesses “as much as possible in the coming weeks and months,” she acknowledged that the both social and economic impacts of the crisis “will undoubtedly loom large for a long time to come.” Nonetheless, she concluded: “The future is unclear, but by working together, we can make the best of it.”

Babul’s of Barnard Castle Babul’s is now open to dine in, and I must say wow! What a treat. During lockdown, we’ve been getting takeaways using their drive-thru service. Their recent launch of the BBQ BOX is out of this world too. If only it was sunny every week! They are also delivering these bad boys to Darlington, Ingleby Barwick & Yarm. We’ve been desperate to have a sit-down meal at Babul’s and as soon as they announced they were open we booked a table online. On arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff who were all kitted out in their PPE and looked super professional. The COVID measures that have been put in place are second to none. Now, we were nervous about not doing things correctly but the team explained how everything would work at the table. A quick scan of a code to complete our track & trace form and we were good to go. Disposable menus were brought over, and the waiter handed over a tablet where we could order our drinks at our convenience also minimising contact between staff and ourselves. The table layout was different and diners were spaced out comfortably and protective screens were in place on some tables, it honestly felt very safe



and organised. As we ordered our meal a fresh set of cutlery with a hand sanitising station was brought to the table. You could see all of the staff were very well trained and were making sure the place was spotless.

We ordered Popachos with dips to start with, I had a Jackfruit Sagwala and my partner had a Mixed Grill.

The food came out promptly and was served on trays so that the staff could maintain social distancing. The flavours were amazing and the dishes were so fresh, the mixed grill was served with some fresh greens and my Jackfruit Sagwala was just perfect.

How can you contact Babul’s?

We ordered cocktails through the drinks tablet, the order can to the table quickly. I like a Pornstar Martini and must admit this was one of the best I’ve had, expertly made and presented. I think we went through their whole menu by the end of the evening and each one was beautifully presented and tasted like a dream.

Recently reopening since the Global Pandemic, you can expect high standards of infection control policies and procedures due to the pair’s NHS experience.

Berwick

the many occasions I have been to visit Berwick, I have On always turned right out of the station to follow

Castlegate into the town centre. This time, I turned left over the railway, looking out for the 1937 Coronation Park on the left, through which runs a footpath downhill to the north bank of the River Tweed. I was walking the new three mile Tweed and Coast nature trail, supported by many local bodies and charitable foundations, and devised by the local U3A. There are fourteen information boards on the trail which runs through Berwick and Tweedmouth via the docks to Spittal beach so the path is part riverside, urban, industrial, dunes and seaside promenade. Spittal has a long and wide expanse of sandy beach, and is rather nicer than the name might imply. In the 1800s it was a popular spa. A similar trail about L. S. Lowry, the artist, is available. There is plenty of wildlife to see and the information boards are attractive and, notably, are changed for each season four times a year to keep the content relevant. A simple idea, but I have not seen it done before in practice. The group organising the trail has just installed the summer versions of the boards. One told of the 2m long Pholiderpeton fossil – might have been useful for helping social distancing. I passed through the ruins of Berwick Castle at low level and was impressed by the grandeur of the Royal Border Bridge, which was officially opened by Queen Victoria on 29th August 1850 on her way to Balmoral, a process which took only twelve minutes from her train arriving to continuing over the border, 2.5 miles further north. (It was a good day for rail openings: she had opened Newcastle Central station earlier the same day.) I continued into town under the 1928 Royal Tweed Bridge which relieved most of the traffic on the Berwick Old Bridge of 1633, which I crossed to Tweedmouth. Road traffic had to trundle through the town until the opening of the A1 Berwick bypass in 1984.

It’s much quieter now, and although the population is around 12,000 you would think it were bigger owing to the large number of villages in both England and Scotland which look to it as their local centre. I was originally intending to visit after the pubs and restaurants reopened on 4th July, but I reckoned that since Berwick pubs were the closest for locked down Scots up to 300 miles away it might be wiser to visit beforehand. I enjoyed fish and chips at the Cannon near the station and ate them in Castle Vale Park with its view of the rail bridge, but I could have sat out at the open air café in Spittal. On the nature trail you also pass the Berwick Shellfish which had a good range of seafood. They offer to put it in a polystyrene box with ice for just £1 extra to take home. From Spittal there is a choice of walking back along Main Street and over the river to town, or use the Borders Buses route B1, which runs half-hourly (hourly on Sundays). If you don’t want to visit the town centre, the bus goes back close to the station. I spotted the Spittal War Memorial off Main Street and behind it a fountain which was an iron-rich chalybeate spa, but there was no indication whether the water was safe to drink. So I didn’t. Alex Nelson travelled to Berwick from Newcastle with CrossCountry for £9.90 and returned with LNER for £8.20.

Summer fruit & mascarpone tart Think of this summer fruit tart with whipped mascarpone as an oversized millefeuille. Itâ€™s very easy to make, but impressive enough for a special gathering. PREP: 30 MINS COOK: 30 MINS

Ingredients 2 x 320g ready-rolled all-butter puff pastry 100g icing sugar 750g tub mascarpone 600ml double cream 2 tsp vanilla extract 200g raspberries, a few halved 200g blackberries, a few halved 1 large mango, peeled and thinly sliced 6 nectarines or peaches, or a mixture, sliced 4 passion fruits (look for ones with crinkly skin, this means theyâ€™re ripe), halved, seeds and pulp scooped out handful small mint leaves

Method

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Unroll 1 pastry sheet, but leave it on the parchment. Place it on a baking tray, dust with 2 tbsp icing sugar, then cover with another sheet of parchment and another baking tray. Pour baking beans into the tray to weigh it down, or use empty cans. Bake for 30 mins, then check if the pastry is golden all over. If not, return for another 5 mins or so. Repeat with the other pastry sheet (or cook both together if you have enough trays). Once out of the oven, trim the edges with a large, sharp knife. Leave to cool.

Softly whip the mascarpone, cream, vanilla and remaining icing

Serves 15-18

sugar, then transfer half to a disposable piping bag fitted with a 1.5cm round nozzle (or just snip off the corner). Pipe blobs of the mascarpone cream over the surface of one piece of pastry, right up to the edges. Top with half the fruit and dust with a little icing sugar.

Top with the second piece of pastry, more mascarpone cream (refilling the bag when you need to), the remaining fruit, a dusting of icing sugar and, finally, some mint leaves. Use a serrated knife to cut through the layers without squashing the whole tart. Best served within an hour or two, but leftovers will keep for up to two days in the fridge
