hoping mobile app will boost Darlington’s commercial district Digital entrepreneur Andrew Bartlett is hoping that his mobile app, Roam, could help to rejuvenate Darlington town centre. The former jockey, himself from Darlington, launched Roam three years ago, and has since seen around half a million people in Darlington and County Durham, plus many more worldwide, use his free-to-download digital app. An invaluable source of information on nearby venues Roam works by pulling in information on local places of interest and amenities, in order to help people to plan days or nights out in the area. It brings together details on opening times, images and maps on places of local interest, making it easier for bars, restaurants and clubs to be found by users of the app. On the social side of things, Roam also features a facility that allows users to share their location with groups, while observing how individuals behave as they move around the area. If the app recognises a ‘behavioural anomaly’, it can send out a safety alert to other members of the group, for instance if one person becomes lost or stranded. As dozens of Darlington businesses and others in the Tees Valley have been signing up to Roam, Bartlett has begun discussions with Darlington Borough Council to find a way to increase activity in the town centre. Any business that signs up has the opportunity to send push notifications of offers and promotions directly to their followers, in addition to providing further information about their offerings, menus and admission fees. App’s rising popularity has “started to snowball” Bannatyne’s, Voodoo Café, Al Forno and Dr Inks are among the business to have already signed up, and Mr Bartlett himself admits that the success of the app has “started to snowball” in recent years. “It is about being able to share experiences with friends and family and rely on what they say rather than people you don’t know on Trip Advisor. Facebook has become so big with so many big brands taking over, so Roam has become a great way for small and medium sized businesses to get their messages directly to their audiences.” The app can be downloaded for free from the iOS App Store and Google Play. Removal of town’s controversial

‘throughabout’ to commence in September

t the end of the summer, work to turn Darlington’s highly contentious Haughton Road ‘throughabout’ into a more traditional roundabout will begin. The transformation was originally announced in 2017, with Darlington Borough Council having been accused of making an “expensive mistake” by introducing the throughabout in the first place. The throughabout, which links Haughton Road with the Eastern Transport Corridor, was originally a major part of a £12 million scheme to ease congestion into the town centre. However, since it opened in 2008, many regular motorists in the area have openly criticised the throughabout, believing that it does little to reduce journey times. In 2017, the council identified that there had been more than two million fewer vehicles travelling through Haughton than there were in 2007, but this has not changed the decision to remove the throughabout later this year. What alterations can drivers expect? The most significant change for motorists is the complete removal of traffic lights, which will in effect turn the junction into a conventional roundabout. Pedestrians and cyclists, meanwhile, will see crossings

realigned, with new signalised crossings planned on both Barton Street and Haughton Road nearby. With the work set to last for seven months – well into next year – the council has contacted local residents to explain the plans, and assured residents and motorists that a traffic management plan will be in place to minimise disruption. Council leader Heather Scott, who has openly denounced the throughabout, said of its upcoming removal: “Changing this junction into a conventional roundabout will improve traffic flow and remove the potential for driver confusion. These changes will also support growth at Central Park, Lingfield Point, Symmetry Park and other parts of the town.” Tees Valley Mayor aspires to “smoother, quicker and better” transport system Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has also had his say on the project: “For too long, this junction has been a pain for plenty of drivers. Thanks to Heather Scott and her team, I’m pleased that this work will start later this year with help from our investment fund.” “I’m dedicated to upgrading our road system across every borough to make travel smoother, quicker and better than ever. We recently committed more than £7 million of funding to road improvements near Morton Park and Darlington Retail Park, which are now taking shape.”

Alison Marshall We catch up with Alison Marshall, Head of Care at St Teresa’s Hospice How would you describe the services that St Teresa’s Hospice provides? The services that St Teresa’s Hospice provides are offered to help people suffering from lifelimiting illness; we help patients to keep their dignity, we preserve patient choice, and we provide care and support for carers and other family members. St Teresa’s Hospice provides a range of holistic day, home, inpatient, complementary therapy, and family support services. All of these services are available to those who need them in Darlington, South Durham and North Yorkshire, completely free of charge. What do you think are the aspects of the hospice’s services that make it so special? Through our services we help people to live with their illness. The palliative and end of life care we provide has been developed by listening to the needs of patients and carers in our community. The services are holistic and designed to meet the specific needs of the patient. We care for the whole person, aiming to meet all needs – physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. How would you describe your own role at the hospice? I am a member of the strategic management team with responsibility for clinical services, ensuring compliance with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations. I have line management and budget responsibility, and my role includes service development in line with the overall Hospice strategy. I also do a lot of networking and help to ensure that St Teresa’s is represented within the wider palliative and end of life care arena regionally and nationally. My role involves mentoring staff and promoting their development. I am also responsible for contractual requirements with the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), ensuring all departments are working within their requirements.

What can readers of Darlington Monthly do to support the hospice? The cost of our services is over £3m a year and we rely on the support of our community to be able to continue providing our vital free care. There are lots of ways in which readers of Darlington Monthly can support the Hospice. They can donate, by giving a one-off or regular donation. They can take part in one of our fun events like our Moonlight & Memories Charity Walk in South Park on Friday 18th October. Thanks to Darlington Monthly we are able to advertise most of our big events, and they can also find a full calendar of events on www.darlingtonhospice.org.uk Readers can also help in other ways, for example by giving up their time to volunteer at the Hospice, in one of our 10 shops, or at a fundraising event. What are some of the most recent fundraising activities and events that have been held for the hospice? The most recent event was our first ever Inflatable Colour Run Challenge, at Longfield Academy in Darlington on Sunday 14th July. 400 people took part in the event, which involved running a mile long obstacle course whilst having powdered paint thrown at them! It was great fun and we expect it to raise around £12,000 once all sponsorship has been collected. There are lots of pictures at facebook.com/stteresashospice. Recently we have also had our Go Yellow Flag Day, our annual street collection, and in July our Race Day at Catterick Racecourse saw 5 local firms go head to head in our hilarious pantomime horse race. “Blazing Saddles” from RPMI Ltd. were the winners and you can watch the race online. How would you describe the hospice’s relationship with the local area? St Teresa’s Hospice is well known locally and is a muchloved organisation. Many local residents will have experienced the Hospice at some point, either as a service user themselves or through a family member, friend or colleague who has benefitted from the care and support we provide. The Darlington & District Hospice Movement, as we are registered, began as a small, home care volunteer team supporting the local community and we have grown with their support and guidance. What have been some of your favourite memories of your own time working at the hospice so far? My early days at St Teresa’s Hospice were as Inpatient Unit Sister. I am very proud of how the Inpatient Unit developed under my care and continues today. It is clear to see the incredible difference all our services make to patients and their families. It was a privilege being involved with the development of the new purpose built Inpatient Unit which opened in 2016 and that has enabled us to help more people. The development of community services has meant more patients can be cared for at home with our bespoke packages of care. I have some great memories of helping with the fundraising activities, in particular taking part in a womenonly Midnight Walk with a male colleague, who is no longer with us, who dressed up for the event and was not spotted by anyone else from the Hospice – great fun!

Meeting people is a big part of my role and I have a lot of memories of the many people I have shown around the Hospice and met at events, where I have given talks and votes of thanks. More recently joining the Staff & Supporters Choir has been fantastic. The friendship and the fun is wonderful and we also raise much needed funds for the Hospice. What is your favourite feedback that you have received down the years from patients, carers or their families? This is difficult to single out as it is clear that we receive so many lovely comments and grateful thanks for our care. Recently we have had some wonderful feedback about the positive impact one of our Volunteer Visitors has had on a patient. His wife described the incredible friendship and the difference it made to her late husband. The volunteer had facilitated a visit to the patient’s old family home in the Dales, a farm house in which he had grown up as a boy. He returned back there only months before he died and this meant the world to him. Are there any other aspects of what the hospice does that you think would especially surprise people? Often people are surprised at the breadth of Complementary and Physio therapies we provide, including things like acupuncture, massage, and reflexology. We even run sessions of Tai Chi! These therapies are given alongside conventional treatments for cancer and other conditions and are very beneficial for pain relief, and for promoting relaxation and well-being. Although we are an adult hospice we also work with children for counselling and bereavement support. This includes working with local schools to improve education and knowledge around bereavement, death and dying. What are the hospice’s ambitions and objectives for the next few years? This year we are re-introducing a Planned Respite Service. We are making this service available again, following a period where it has been on hold due to the opening and transition to our new Inpatient Unit. This will extend our care for people who have been diagnosed with a palliative progressive illness, and their carers, living in South Durham and North Yorkshire. In 2020 we will launch our next 5 year strategy building on our previous “2020 Vision”. This will outline our ambitions for the next 5 years.

Strawberry Pavlova Method.

Ingredients. 4 egg whites 250g caster sugar 1 tsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp cornflor 1 tsp vanilla extract 500g strawberries, hulled and halved 200g redcurrants, stalks removed 3 tbsp icing sugar 350ml double cream

Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2. Using a pencil, mark out the circumference of a dinner plate on baking parchment. Whisk 4 egg whites with a hand mixer until they form stiff peaks, then whisk in 250g caster sugar, 1 tbsp at a time, until the meringue looks glossy.

When the meringue is cool, chop 100g of the hulled strawberries. Mix them with 100g of the redcurrants and 2 tbsp icing sugar.

Whisk in 1 tsp white wine vinegar, 1 tsp cornflour and 1 tsp vanilla extract.

Place in a good processor, blitz until smooth, then push the fruit mixture through a sieve.

Spread the meringue inside the circle, creating a crater by making the sides a little higher than the middle.

Whip 350ml double cream with the remaining 1 tbsp icing sugar and spread it over the meringue. Put the remaining 400g hulled and halved strawberries and 100g redcurrants on the cream and finally pour the sauce over the whole lot.

Bake for 1 hour, then turn off the heat and let the Pavlova cool completely inside the oven.

Flights to Spain to return

to Durham Tees Valley Airport next year From July 2020, holidaymakers will be able to fly from Darlington’s closest airport to the beautiful Balearic Island of Majorca, following the finalisation of an agreement with JetsGo Holidays.

“While we’re only four months in, this announcement, and the additional holiday flights to Bulgaria, demonstrates that our airport can be a success and our 10 Year Rescue Plan is working.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen was delighted to announce the new flights, which will run for 10 weeks next summer during the peak holiday season.

The rescue plan was a key election pledge of Mr Houchen’s, with the first step of returning the airport to public ownership having been approved by the Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet in January. And the next immediate step could be to actually give the airport back its previous name, Teesside Airport, after an intellectual property rights dispute was recently concluded.

This is the latest exciting announcement for the future of Durham Tees Valley Airport, following the success of Balkan Holidays’ flights to Bulgaria since May, and the reported possibility of flights from the airport to Heathrow commencing as early as 2030. However, the latest agreement is the first secured since Stobart Aviation took over operation of Durham Tees Valley Airport in March. Mr Houchen said: “Just a few months after buying back our airport, I’m delighted to announce that flights to the UK’s most popular holiday destination will be returning to Teesside. With these flights to Majorca next year, JetsGo Holidays has become the latest company to throw its weight behind our airport.” “When kids break up for their summer holidays, families won’t have to slog to Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle to get a great value break – they’ll be able to jet off to Spain from Teesside for the first time in seven years.”

As a result, the region could see a renamed and commercially rejuvenated airport in a matter of months, with JetsGo Holidays already extremely enthusiastic about the future.
