Construction of new £8.5 million Feethams office block in Darlington now underway Work has commenced on a promising, £8.5 million office complex sited on what was formerly Beaumont Street Car Park in Darlington. The finished, five-storey building will provide accommodation for small and medium-sized businesses in the Darlington Borough Council area. The council, the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) have all provided funding for the 3,900-square-metre office complex, which will stand beside the existing Feethams leisure complex and is expected to be fully constructed by spring 2020. The new building will be aimed at accommodating companies in the professional services, digital and creative fields. The building is intended to attract office workers to town centre facilities such as cafes, bars and shops, while the development will also have areas of publicly accessible open space. Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council (DBC)’s Deputy Leader as well as DBC’s cabinet member for Economy and Regeneration, enthused: “This is fantastic news for Darlington and allows businesses to take advantage of the great location and transport network links Darlington offers. “Work starting on this development is another huge step in making sure Darlington is an attractive and vibrant location for both business and leisure for years to come.” Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, the chairman of the TVCA, was similarly enthusiastic, claiming: “This Grade-A office space will be a huge draw for professional services firms that are currently looking at Leeds or Newcastle for their base. “In funding this development, we’re helping to create a quality workspace that is just a stone’s throw away from the East Coast Main

Line, building on Darlington’s excellent transport links. It will signal to firms across the UK that the Tees Valley is open for business.” Though construction of the complex is expected to take over a year to complete, it is already possible for businesses to reserve office space for rent in the building, with various options available. Asset company Columbia Threadneedle, which bought the complex from its original owners Urban and Civic, is working to boost the accessibility of a space set to be used for organised events, some of which could benefit from a pergola currently being built in the site’s raised central area. The pergola is also intended for use by temporary ‘pop-up’ shops, as well as workers in nearby offices - including the future Feethams office block - taking their lunch breaks. The Hullabaloo named Best Family Venue at Fantastic for Families Awards The Hullabaloo theatre in Darlington has enthralled many children and young people since the venue opened to great acclaim in December 2017. Now, the Hullabaloo has received further recognition in the form of the Best Family Venue 2019 accolade at the Fantastic for Families Awards. The candidates for the Fantastic for Families Awards were judged by a panel of experts from the creative sector, with the much-loved Hullabaloo among the list of winners announced at a Liverpool ceremony in February. The venue was praised for its commitment to family-friendly arts and culture. The expert judges, whose vote swung the decision in favour of The Hullabaloo, enthused that the theatre “has demonstrated excellence across the board with a popular, fully accessible, dedicated venue, strong awareness of diverse needs, and innovative activities. “Not only does the venue develop its offer in consultation with local partners and communities but the quality of effort to inform and welcome all kinds of families was particularly impressive.” More than 20,000 children and their families have visited The Hullabaloo to sample its world-class theatre productions and free creative play installations, and the theatre’s Executive Director, Laura Case, said that her team were “delighted” to have landed the Best Family Venue 2019 title. She recalled: “We knew when we started this journey of creating a venue dedicated to children and their families that it would be special, and to be recognised as the best is great recognition for everyone involved in making it become a reality.

Darlington Street Friends formed to protect safety of night-time revellers The next time you go on a night out in Darlington, you might catch sight of Darlington Street Friends. The newly-formed group consists of volunteers who, on weekend evenings, will come to the rescue of vulnerable people in the town, from drunken revellers to the homeless. The first night out for Darlington Street Friends was on Friday 25th January, when the seven volunteers of the group, attired in hi-visibility jackets, assisted eight people who had drunk excessively or become separated from their friends. Though the group’s initial night-time outings will be just once monthly, the Friends are eager to turn up on even more nights should they progress promisingly with the scheme, such as recruiting more volunteers. Measures which the Friends will be following include handing out water to relieve dehydration and giving out flip-flops to help protect people from suffering sore feet. Mags Theakston, from Darlington’s Kings Church, came up with the idea for the Friends, a group inspired by similar schemes such as Consett Street Friends. Theakston explained: “We are all Christians and are motivated by our faith to care for others in our community - we just want to make sure everyone is safe,” adding: “We will be there to help anyone who is out on a night out and finds themselves a little worse for wear”. She clarified that the volunteers could act “by providing them with a bottle of water and some flipflops to walk in, to alerting the emergency services or escorting them to a taxi.

“It could be our own sons or daughters who find themselves in a vulnerable position with nobody to help them and that’s why we want to help.” The Darlington Street Friends initiative was set up in collaboration with landlords and door staff, while Durham Constabulary and Darlington Borough Council have also lent their support to the volunteers - who, due to their first aid training, can help with minor injuries. Darlington Police’s PC Chris Horner enthused: “This is a fantastic initiative with volunteers giving up their free time to safeguard revellers and other vulnerable people in the night-time economy. “It will be great to see them become a valued part of nightlife in Darlington and I’ve no doubt that their work will keep people safer and take some of the strain off the emergency services.” Darlington Borough Council’s head of community safety also hailed the scheme, describing it as “an excellent example of volunteers working closely with local agencies to support and assist members of the community who find themselves vulnerable in the night-time economy.” Members of Darlington Street Friends, including fellow volunteers Barry Theakston and Helen Gannaway, have already been featured on local news sites, including those of The Northern Echo and What’s On Darlington. Here’s to much success in their early adventures!

We have a strong social media presence, and we are in a great position in the town centre, right in the middle of the historic Post House Wynd. Our customers are a great mix! Our team was originally based in Middlesbrough so we have had a lot of our loyal clients follow us from there. We have had a lot of the previous Toni and Guy Darlington Clientele return to us too, and we are lucky enough to meet new clients every day!

What are your future ambitions for the salon? To continue to grow the clientele and deliver the Toni and Guy standard. We are already looking at recruiting as our columns are filling up quickly, so we would love to add another experienced stylist to our team.

Darlington’s first-ever zerowaste shop and deli A couple are hoping to unite a community in appreciation of a new concept in catering, with the launch of the first zero-waste deli to ever open in Darlington. Mutiny Deli is now open on Skinnergate, and is the brainchild of Laura and Anthony Phoenix. The couple, who live close to the town and are expecting their first child, came up with the idea after seeing masses of plastic pollution during their travels in South-East Asia. Mr and Mrs Phoenix have been vegetarian and vegan for almost four years, while their involvement in waste reduction has also greatly increased since their time away. Plaudits already rolling in for the exciting new concept Mr Phoenix commented: “We wanted to combine the two elements and thought it would be great if we offered a zero-waste shop – partly out of our own necessity as well as making it available to others. “We’re both chatty and outgoing so we want to make it somewhere that’s open to everybody.” The 27 and 28-year-old are also drawing upon their several years’ experience in food retail to introduce Darlington to a type of catering that is fresh in more ways than one. The establishment opened its doors last month with a day of freebies and tasters, and has already received rave reviews online, including from one customer who said it offered “such wonderful food and drinks, even for a non-vegan... Laura and Anthony are so friendly and welcoming.” What can you expect when you visit? Mutiny is a part deli, part food store featuring jars of dried goods, such as beans, pasta, rice and flour, and gives customers the opportunity to fill their own containers with products and pay by weight.

A deli corner is also provided complete with a table and chairs, where an assortment of vegan and vegetarian options are on sale, including pasties, sausage rolls, cheese, homemade seitan meats, cakes, brownies, smoothies, tea and coffee. Mrs Phoenix said: “We’ll offer a beautiful selection of salads – things that people can put in a box and take away with them. “It’s going to be quite a new concept at first so we will be out on the shop floor helping people.” It is also intended that a percentage of the deli’s profits will be donated to the ocean clean-up charity Sea Shepherd, which inspired the business’s sea-themed name. FILM REVIEW: WHAT MEN WANT I’ve waited many, many years for a gender-swapped take on Mel Gibson’s loveable classic, What Women Want (2000), but I have to admit that this 2019 remake, starring Taraji P. Henson, fell somewhat short of its predecessor. Screenwriters Tina Gordon, Alex Gregory, and Peter Huyck have flipped the original premise in writing What Men Want. Fiery, determined Ali Davis (Henson) is a sports agent working in a male dominated firm, and the plot is built on how she loses out on a huge promotion (to a man, of course). After causing a scene, fuelled by her frustration, her boss tells her that she simply ‘doesn’t understand men’. Fast forward several scenes and an exasperated Ali sits before an eccentric, drug-dealing psychic at a hen party, who convinces her to drink a mysterious ‘herbal’ tea and – boom! The male-dominating fun begins.

There’s a significant, yet expected shift in power dynamics when we compare this film, directed by Adam Shankman, to Nancy Meyer’s 2000 classic. In the original, Gibson’s character, Nick, is a chauvinistic, arrogant man who loses out to a woman for the first time, and for reasonable logic too. Ali, on the other hand, is a black, career-driven woman who has been overlooked by white men throughout her working life. Following on from the hen party, Ali wakes to discover that she can hear the thoughts of every male she comes into contact with. Initially frightfully disturbed, she returns to the psychic and is convinced to use this new-found power to her advantage. She recognises that her career now depends on signing would-be client, Jamal Barry (Shaun Paul McGhie), so uses her new ability to tune in to his thoughts and understand his desires. Alongside this plot, the film is packed with a variety of threads committed to Ali’s personal life; her budding romance with extremely lovable Will (Aldis Hodge), and her strained relationship with long-suffering assistant Brandon (Josh Brener). The title ‘What Men Want’ doesn’t work quite as well when the inner thoughts switch genders. The men that surrounded Ali don’t ‘want’, in the same mysterious sense that Gibson’s women did. Ali’s co-workers think exactly how we assume they would, which

softens the punch that this film was trying to deliver. Moreover, to better understand men, Ali doesn’t attempt to get in touch with her masculine side in the same way that Gibson refreshingly explored his feminine side. Henson brings energy to every scene and is highly commendable throughout, and the film itself has a well-structured plot and enjoys some funny moments. It was a delight to watch Ali’s personal growth, however, I can’t help but feel as though the premise would have been much more hard-hitting had it followed more closely to its predecessor, or embraced its new angle more comprehensively.

Easter brownie bites Ingredients. • 175g butter, chopped • 150g dark chocolate • 250g light brown soft sugar • 85g self-raising flour • 50g cocoa powder • 3 large eggs, beaten • 100g milk chocolate chips • 24 mini chocolate eggs, plus extra to decorate

Method. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line 24 holes of a mini muffin tray with paper cases. Put the butter, dark chocolate and sugar in a pan and heat it very gently, stirring all the time until the butter and chocolate have melted. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for a few min Meanwhile, sift the flour, cocoa and a good pinch of salt into a large bowl. Stir in the warm, melted chocolate mixture and the beaten eggs, then add half the chocolate chips and mix until just combined

Divide the mixture between the cases and place a mini egg into the middle of each muffin, pushing down gently. Bake for 12-15 mins until cooked but still gooey in the centre – they will continue cooking a little as they cool down. Leave to cool for 10 mins in the tin before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely Melt the rest of the chocolate chips in short bursts in the microwave, or in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring frequently. Leave to cool until it is quite thick, then dot a small amount on each cake and stick on some more mini eggs.
