New health and fitness club Physique are really proving that they are the gym to join in Darlington Following the re-branding of the club in December, from Boxfit to Physique, the arrival of new manager Deith Bridges and the implementation of a new customer care package 'the club is booming'. Manager Deith Bridges said: "When the owners Dave and Henry Ward brought me in, we all decided straight away that the perception of the club in Darlington was that we were a boxing club - hence the name change. 'We also realised that there is a lot of gyms in Darlington and we wanted to offer something different. Being a small independent locally owned club what we can compete with against some of these larger multi-national chains is offering great "customer care". "Our customer care package cannot be beaten. I personally think value for money is an understatement," added Deith. When new members join Physique the team strive to ensure everyone receives the following: · Several one-to-one sessions with a gym instructor spread over a two week period. This is to help new members develop confidence within the gym. · A tailor-made program is designed after being a member of the gym for two weeks, to ensure it works towards your strengths and weaknesses.

· Once the program's goals have been achieved, the whole process starts again. One-to-one sessions with a gym instructor continues and this is when the workouts step-up to ensure you achieve your gym goals. · There's also a tracking system where staff email or phone customers to offer free re-motivational sessions when the customer has not been in the gym for a while. Deith said: 'We are becoming a real specialist gym in helping the unconfident person in achieving their goals. If you are

too scared to walk through the door of a mainstream gym then let Physique help you. We will `hold your hand' until you are ready to let it go so to speak. FILM REVIEW: Sherlock Gnomes

While the 2011 computer-animated film Gnomeo & Juliet wasn’t the most revolutionary take on that William Shakespeare play, it was also far from a shambles. In fact, it was rather cute and endearing. James McAvoy and Emily Blunt had an easy chemistry as the two eponymous leads, gnomes who enjoyed an illicit love affair despite belonging to rival gnome gangs busily scheming on opposite sides of a garden fence. Nonetheless, how many of us really clamoured for a sequel? In any case, we’ve ended up getting one – and with both Gnomeo and Juliet and their familiar voice actors back, it probably wouldn’t be a spoiler for us to say that, in the first film, they didn’t meet the grisly fates of their Shakespearean counterparts. However, after relocating from Stratfordupon-Avon to London, they have suffered a rupture in their previously harmonious relationship. The culprit? The new garden; by the disgruntled Gnomeo’s reckoning, Juliet is unjustly paying more attention to it than to him. Cue many scenes of Gnomeo being uncharacteristically petulant and bickering insistently with his porcelain paramour. This tension is dramatically shattered like terracotta when the couple return to the garden after time away and realise that all of their gnome co-inhabitants have gone. Who better to investigate the mysterious disappearances than Sherlock? Yes, it’s a gnome version of Sherlock – a pompous git called Sherlock Gnomes – that we’re talking about here. That Johnny Depp provides the voice is puzzling; the American brings little to the role except a plummy British accent that a home-grown actor surely could have delivered just as well. Sherlock clashes with his sidekick Watson, voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and jilted ex-fiancée Irene, who serves scant purpose here besides letting her voice actress Mary J Blige sing an all-new song.

The first film had quite a few clever little touches, like Shakespeare himself as a talking statue and the snarling menace Tybalt depicted in a more sanitised light. However, the sequel is largely shorn of such creativity. Perhaps the closest it gets is with Moriarty, Sherlock’s arch nemesis. Here, he resembles a small, yellow version of the ‘Stay Puft’ man from Ghostbusters – and is played deliriously by Jamie Demetriou, who gives a voice reminiscent of a creepily demented Alan Carr. All the same, the first film’s touching love story provided a soft centre that is sorely lacking this time around, given the near-relentless snappy exchanges between the characters. Meanwhile, broadening the scenery to London’s busy streets makes for a wild goose chase bringing to mind too many other, better films. An unexpectedly stunning climax centred on Tower Bridge does slightly make up for it, but still leaves us with a Toy Story wannabe that is little to write gnome about.

Cleveland Bridge has celebrated the achievements of a group of its apprentices who have completed nationallyrecognised qualifications. A group of 13 young people achieved NVQ Level 3 qualifications in a range of industry disciplines, they were presented their NVQ diplomas at an event held at the company’s Darlington headquarters, where it manufactures large steel bridges and structures.

Cranachan recipe by H O T E L

Ingredients. knob of butter 100g/3½oz light muscovado

Hold back some of the crunchy oats and raspberries for a lovely, textured topping for this classic Scottish dessert.

Method. • Put the butter, sugar and oats in a saucepan and stir over a high heat for 4–5 minutes, or until toasted and crunchy. Set aside to cool.

• Measure the mascarpone and cream into a bowl and whisk until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed from the bowl. • Add the whisky, 300g/10½oz raspberries and two-thirds of the cooled oats. Mix until combined, but try to keep the raspberries fairly whole. • Spoon into glasses and top with the remaining raspberries and crunchy oats.

Tees Cottage Pumping Station Open Days 23rd/24th JUNE 2018 - Tees Cottage are holding another open weekend at Broken Scar, Coniscliffe Road, Darlington, DL3 8TF. Come and see the history of the water supply in darlington. The plan is to run all of the old steam machinery including the victorian beam engine, boiler and gas engine and the electric pumps installed in 1926 will be on static display. A blacksmith will also be in the smithy. The miniature railway should also be available to ride (small extra cost). The café will be open for snacks. Opening times: 11.00 To 17.00 Each day (last admission 16.00). Charges: adult: £5.00. Concessions: £4.00. Children free.
