Welcome to the October edition of Darlington Monthly! Is it really October already? Yes it is, and there’s a lot more to this often-unsung month than Halloween. It’s true that the weather’s not amazing at this time of year, but that simply gives you all the more reason to take advantage of some less obvious travel destinations. This month’s issue includes a piece on the West Yorkshire city of Wakefield, for instance, which as Alex Nelson explains, has plenty to offer to day-trippers from Darlington. Or if you’d like to stay a little closer to home, why not visit Butterfly World – which we have also covered in this issue – or check out our complete local events listings for October? Once again, we’ve also rounded up some of the best news developments from across Darlington’s businesses that help to make it such a wonderful place to live, work and play. As usual, our advertisers are absolute heroes in making the magazine possible, so please make the most of their services whenever you need them this autumn! You can become one yourself, in fact, by calling us on 07500 828 396 or emailing sales@darlingtonmonthly.co.uk to learn more about our discounted three and six-month advertiser packages. Enjoy this month’s issue, and keep your eyes peeled for November’s!

Leading Northern Roofing Company Proudly Launches New Website Roofing is an aspect of a home that never seems to receive much attention until a disaster happens that requires immediate attention – yet, it is also one of the most important parts of any property to install, maintain and repair appropriately. This only makes it all the more crucial, when your own roofing or another element of your home requires the services of the right roofers and builders, to choose a company that you can truly trust. Few companies anywhere in the North East of England or beyond have as strong a claim to be ‘that’ company as Findley Roofing & Building. The firm has been providing impeccable roofing and building services across our region for more than 40 years now. Amid sustained growth in recent years, the business has more than 100 highly capable and qualified staff on its payroll – as well as big ambitions to grow beyond its home region in the months and years to come.

services and expertise throughout the region, as well as its free roof health checks and 0% finance on new roofs. JAK HQ’s Joe Crooks commented: “Developing a working relationship with the North East’s fastest growing roofing company has been a pleasure. We had to bring our ‘A game’ to ensure we delivered a great website that suited the client’s needs and matched their aspirations. Redesigning the website again from scratch and taking over the current SEO and social within a short space of time was no easy task. However, we did it with fantastic results, and we’re all very proud of the outcome.”

Whether you are seeking the installation or repair of a flat roof, EPDM roof, rubber roof, slate roof or garage roof – to say nothing of the extensive range of other building services that the company offers, such as PAREX rendering, brickwork repointing, conservatories It is as part of this that Findley Roofing & Building has and garage extensions – it seems that there really is no recently launched its new website, designed by the need to look any further than Findley Roofing & Building. leading North East creative agency JAK HQ. What’s on TV This Month The Gadget Show The Gadget Show has been a hit consumer technology programme for Channel 5 since its debut in 2004, previewing and reviewing the latest gadgets and even spawning the Gadget Show Live series of events. This year has already seen big changes for the programme, with Gadget Show Live having been axed and Jason Bradbury and Amy Williams both exiting as hosts. In their place have come Craig Charles and Georgie Barrat, joining existing presenters Jon Bentley and Ortis Deley. The show has also recently returned to a studio base in Birmingham. It’s all very exciting for admirers of the latest tech, and of course, with the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X having recently been unveiled, we continue to have a lot of it to get excited about. The show has achieved a host of Guinness World Records down the years and been involved in eye-catching campaigns, so while Channel 5 is remaining tight-lipped about exactly what we can expect this time around, there’s sure to be plenty of features relevant to the world of gadgets today. Curb Your Enthusiasm The groundbreaking US comedy show starring television writer and producer Larry David as a fictionalised version of himself has been missing from our screens since 2011, so its comeback will be very much welcomed by fans of ‘cringe’ humour on both sides of the Atlantic. For those who are unaware of the show that might be fairly described as ‘cult’ on these shores, you can think of Curb as a sort of American Alan Partridge, focusing on the minutiae of David’s life, with his various faux pas and struggles with certain 8

social conventions and expectations. His difficulty with allowing his annoyances with others to go unexpressed leads him into some hilariously awkward situations. Not only will the ninth series of the celebrated show see the return of such regular co-stars as Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman and J.B. Smoove, but there are also various guest stars lined up, including Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. Catch the new Curb Your Enthusiasm here in the UK on Sky Atlantic from 2nd October. The Walking Dead The post-apocalyptic horror series based on the brilliant black and white comic books of Robert Kirkman, and turned into a TV hit by Frank Darabont, returns for its eighth series on Fox (UK) from 9pm on 23rd October. If you’ve somehow so far managed to avoid this US cable ratings monster (about, erm, monsters), it focuses on the story of sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes – played by Andrew Lincoln – who awakens from a coma to find a world overrun by zombies, commonly referred to as “walkers”. Reuniting with his family, Grimes becomes the leader of a group of survivors, but they struggle to survive amid the dangers posed by not only the walkers, but also opposing groups of survivors. This eighth season of the show sees Lincoln return alongside the likes of Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan and Chandler Riggs, and adapts the All Out War story arc from the comics, with the survivors of Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom taking on Negan and the Saviors.

An easy-to-overlook gem! Butterfly World, Eaglescliffe It’s hardly revelatory to say that a public park is home to wildlife; however, the wildlife in the 100-acre Preston Park in Eaglescliffe, near Stockton, can be rather more exotic than you’d expect. That’s because the park includes, among its array of enticing attractions, Butterfly World – an indoor garden where many tropical butterflies can be seen.

Furthermore, these butterflies are free to fly around the building; this can give you a good idea of what it would be like to casually wander through their natural habitat. Butterfly World feels, and not just looks, like a rainforest; the greenhouse’s temperature is routinely kept to a minimum of 25 °C, while the humidity level is 70%.

Open daily between 10am and 4pm except for a period of closure from November to April, Butterfly World presents what can feel like a tropical rainforest in microcosm. You can walk past beautiful flowers and trees, not to mention enjoy the relaxing splashing sounds of waterfalls. There are also some meerkats and reptiles to see – but what about the butterflies?

It all adds up to a great experience for the small entry charges of £4 per adult and £3.50 per child or OAP. There are also group discounts, while a family ticket can be bought for £15.

There are 80-120 species of them at Butterfly World. Examples include Caligo eurilochus, which originates from Mexico and South America; the vividly purple-winged Euphaedra neophron, which comes from South Africa; and the fluorescent blue Morpho Peleides, another South America native. 12

Employment Round Up A recent survey suggests that the traditional 9 to 5 job is no longer the preferred work choice for 1000’s of people, who are increasingly looking for more flexibility in how and when they work. It has long been the case that mother’s returning to the workforce have exercised their right to work flexibly, but now it seems men and younger workers are shunning the 9 to 5 pattern, with 84% of men looking for less rigidity in the structure of the working day. But this shift in preference is not necessarily being incorporated into business strategies as many companies build their operational infrastructure on more traditional lines. The survey found that fewer than one in 10 roles paying more than £20,000 on a full-time equivalent basis were advertised as being flexible, yet the benefits of flexible working are well recognized, with those companies embracing more diversity recording higher productivity and engagement. The world of work is changing fast and organizations need to adapt if they are going to attract top talent – incorporating flexible working into business strategies is no longer the domain of the enlightened boss, but a must for any company facing the work challenges of today.

asten your seat belt - for this fabulously ridiculous, rollicking rollercoaster of a film. Top of the list are the wonderful send-ups of stereotypes. You’ll encounter a healthy dose of old-world London charm and contemporary cultural references, plus a generous measure of Southern Comfort thrown into the mix – shaken but not stirred. Oh so unsubtle, but oh so much fun. A mash-up of numerous references to favourite screen moments from Bond to Charade and Fargo also finds its way into this film, but this crazy confection works best when it’s most like the original Man from U.N.C.L.E series – all sharp suits

Moreover, for any Doctor Who fan who’s been missing K9, you might find your favourite robotic canine’s replacement here, although not so discerning, incisive or helpful. Overall, the deliberately unsubtle references to sex, drugs and bodily functions and the over-thetop violence won’t be to everyone’s taste; some left me feeling uncomfortable, so in the end, it is a ‘Marmite’ film that will divide opinion. Tees Valley business leader ‘braves the shave’ in friend’s memory Karl Pemberton, Managing Director of Active Chartered Financial Planners, has ‘braved the shave’ to raise money for cancer charity Bright Red in memory of his friend Michael Airey. Karl has taken to social media to challenge other business leaders in the region to do the same to raise further funds for the charity that supported the Darlington branch manager of Handelsbanken, who lost his battle to blood cancer in July.

“I’m now challenging any of my fellow professionals to do similar, to raise money to help fight this horrible disease. If we can give our time, our money, or in my case, our hair to help those who are suffering, we should step up and do it.”

A spokesperson from Bright Red said: “Bright Red aims to make the North East the safest place in the UK, if not the world, to be treated for blood cancer. Places to go...

WAKEFIELD, West Yorkshire

I usually try to visit the place featured in this series before writing about it. Strictly I have, because I arrived by bus one Saturday lunchtime in 2016 at Wakefield Bus Station and walked across the City to Wakefield Westgate station where I caught the train to Leeds, and then home. Half of the hour that I was in the city was spent in the Virgin Trains First Class Lounge! I also have previously visited the excellent National Coal Mining Museum for England at Overton, some seven miles by bus out of Wakefield, and thus ruled out for this article. A day in Wakefield by train via Leeds can revolve around the Cathedral and the Hepworth Art Gallery. Wakefield is a city of 77,000 people on the river Calder, on the eastern edge of the Pennines. The railway arrived in 1840 when Kirkgate Station was built, later joined by the Westgate station. Kirkgate has recently been regenerated, but was previously one of the most neglected stations on the national network.

purpose-built gallery to open in recent times, designed by British architect David Chipperfield and cost £35  million to build. Five weeks after opening it had received 100,000 visitors. The Hepworth Wakefield is a structure composed of ten trapezoidal blocks; its upper-level galleries are lit by natural light from large windows in the pitched roofs.  Its windows have views of the river, historic waterfront and the city skyline. The building’s façade is clad with self-compacting pigmented concrete made on site, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. The architects selected the material to emphasise the gallery’s sculptural appearance. The gallery has ground-floor visitor facilities, including a café bar overlooking the river, a learning studio, a 100-seat auditorium and shop. I understand the building’s  brutalist  design is not universally popular with local people. But the interior contains works of many wellknown artists - well worth a visit.

The most prominent landmark in Wakefield is the Cathedral, which at 247 feet (75 m) has the tallest spire in Yorkshire.  Other landmarks in the Civic Quarter on Wood Street include the Grade II* Neoclassical Crown Court of 1810, Wakefield Town Hall designed by T.W. Collcutt and opened in 1880,  and the  Queen Anne style  County Hall of 1898 which are Grade I listed.   St John’s Church and Square, St John’s North and South Parade are part of residential development dating from the Georgian period. The Cathedral is a 14th century parish church (formerly All Saints) built on the site of earlier Saxon and Norman churches, restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century, and raised to cathedral status in 1888. There is also a well-preserved chantry chapel of St. Mary the Virgin on Wakefield Bridge.

Wakefield is known as the capital of the Rhubarb Triangle, ( Wakefield / Morley / Rothwell ), an area notable for growing early forced  rhubarb. In July 2005 a sculpture was erected to celebrate this facet of Wakefield, and there is an annual ‘Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb” which takes place over the last weekend in February. Which might be an ideal time for my trip back.

In May 2011 The Hepworth gallery opened on the south bank of the River Calder near Wakefield Bridge, displaying work by local artists  Barbara Hepworth  and  Henry Moore,  and other British and international artists. It is thought to be the largest

FREE Family Event is back for its third year: Celebration of Local Superheroes! Following the success of last year’s event (which around 20,000 people attended), families can get involved in exciting activities and see demonstrations from real life local superheroes. Hosted by Ron Hogg, the Durham Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner (PCVC), the family event is free, with free parking, and will be held on Saturday 28 October 2017 at Locomotion, The National Railway Museum in Shildon from 10am – 3pm. It will showcase and raise awareness of all the good work that is happening in our local communities.

Activities, competitions and demonstrations include dog displays, Crime Scene Investigation activities, a children’s treasure hunt and much more. And don’t forget the children’s Halloween and superhero fancy dress competition! This year we’ve also partnered with the North East Autism Society, so that the morning session is autism-friendly. No need to book, just turn up on the day (either with, or without, fancy dress!) For updates, find us on Facebook (search for Durham PCC), or visit: www.durham-pcc.gov.uk.

Come and see the emergency services, including the police (and the Police Interceptors), fire service, mountain rescue and many other local organisations and groups.

POETRY CORNER INSPIRATION

Inspiration’ is a fascinating word; Yet sadly it is rarely heard; A word that conjures thought and planning, with exciting outcomes, Life Changing and Spanning. Making Dreams come true; Opening Doors for You. A word that Floated Gigantic Ships; Saw Huge Aeroplanes Soar, for Worldwide Trips. There are No Boundaries, but for those we create; Add Your contribution before it is Too Late! I Write, most perhaps falls on Stoney Ground; Yet to some my compilations could be quite Profound. ‘Sowing the seed’ is in a Biblical Parable of Yore; Take opportunity when you can, always striving for more. Progress emanates from ‘Inspiration’ that can provide just rewards; Don’t watch Others Achieve, see what Your Inspiration, Affords!

Quakers Zone

Our monthly report on Darlington 1883 from Ray Simpson, Communications and Media Manager

Darlington are hoping to install some new seats at Blackwell Meadows early in the New Year. In order to satisfy the ground criteria set by the Vanarama National League, Quakers need to erect a new covered stand containing 250 seats next to their existing stand. The fans have already raised enough money to pay for the foundations, but there are still two stages left – the seats and the framework. The club is keen to improve the matchday experience at Blackwell Meadows especially for families, and so there has been a fundraising campaign amongst the fans of over £30,000 to pay for the seats themselves, and when this is successful , then the seats will be ordered and installed. The club will then provide an area for families to sit and watch the game.

be launched to complete the project and further improve the ground. Manager Martin Gray has also made a new signing in 24 year old winger Adam Dawson, who has come on loan from Tranmere, and as a schoolboy, was the subject of a £100,000 transfer between Bury and Liverpool. He made his Darlington debut in the game at Boston. The club is always looking for match sponsors, matchball sponsors and advertisers around its ground. Anyone interested should contact director John Tempest by email on: commercial@darlingtonfc.org

The next phase will then be to put cover over the seats, and another fundraising campaign will Find us on Facebook: DarlingtonMonthly Visit us online: www.darlingtonmonthly.co.uk
