Let’s start with the divine diva - Dame Joan Collins. She not only graced the streets of Surrey when she opened Shooting Star’s charity shop but graces the cover of our magazine – she’s looking stunning, sexy, and more spectacular than ever. ‘There’s life after 50 and beyond’ really ought to be the mantra of another of our interviewees, the impressive gynaecological consultant, Rowena Bevan. A leader in her field, Rowena is keen to remind us to lead our best lives. (I think she’s talking about having great sex ladies). Another iconic woman still strutting her stuff and looking dazzling, is the princess of pop, Kylie Minogue. Along with Jazz-pop songstress Caro Emerald, the two ‘Leading Ladies’ headline this year’s Hampton Court Festival. From pop sensations to the story of two tennis stars: Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills who dominated their sport 100 years ago. Who doesn’t love… The Divine Dame Joan Collins? Dame Joan Collins stopped the traffic in Cobham when the global superstar brought her trademark glitz and glamour to Cobham at the opening of the newest Shooting Star Children’s Hospices charity shop. Adoring fan, Holly Candlish, was at the event Dame Joan Collins is enjoying a renaissance. Whether as a recent cover girl for Tatler; fronting the Kurt Geiger advertising campaign; starring in American TV series or stealing the headlines from Kylie, Kendall, Gaga and Kim looking utterly resplendent in Valentino at the Met Ball Gala. No matter your age and stage, Joan Collins is a glamorous poster girl for women of every age. The Dynasty star took time out of her busy schedule to open Shooting Star’s newest shop, located in Cobham High Street, and joined staff, volunteers and supporters of the charity at the official opening. Renowned for her ageless beauty and fabulous wardrobe, Dame Joan also donated 300 items of her own clothes and accessories to raise money for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices that provide vital care and support to children with life-limiting conditions, and their families. Actress Joan Collins has gone from Rank film starlet to Dame in the course of her long and glittering career but her elevation to Dame Joan Collins was for services to charity and Shooting Star has benefitted enormously from having Hollywood royalty as a patron. She says of her

work, “I began my association with Shooting Star Children’s Hospices in 2003. Sixteen years on, I’m delighted to still be part of such a special charity and very happy to be officially opening their newest charity shop in Cobham. It’s an honour to be able to donate clothes, shoes and accessories from my own personal wardrobe to help Shooting Star Children’s Hospices continue their wonderful work in supporting all those families who need them now.” Today, she is celebrated for her timeless glamour and for playing dozens of powerful, sexy roles. In the 70s, she teamed up with her sister, Jackie, to star in her raunchy blockbusters The Bitch and The Stud, but it was with her iconic role as Alexis Carrington in the hit TV series, Dynasty, that she achieved international superstardom. She won a well-deserved Golden Globe for the part and as she approached her 50th birthday, was invited to be a Playboy centrefold: of course, she accepted the invitation.

Big talking, big hair and big shoulder pads, as Alexis Colby Carrington, Joan Collins inspired a generation of women in both their fashion and attitude to work. And, she continues to remain relevant to this day. Like many young actresses, she faced her own #MeToo moment in her career famously missing out on the role of Cleopatra after rejecting the advances of a high-ranked studio executive. The role was played by her great friend Elizabeth Taylor. The two had much in common: lustrous dark hair; red lips; huge eyes; a killer figure and they were both tabloid fodder with a series of high-profile romances and marriages. Marriage number five to Percy Gibson took place 17 years ago and much has been made of the 30-year age gap of which Joan Collins said she wasn’t worried and quipped, “If he dies, he dies.” She also agrees with her fellow star Michael Caine about the secret to a happy marriage, “Michael once said the secret to a happy marriage is separate bathrooms. We try to keep to that rule”. Seeing the couple in Cobham together, they were relaxed and attentive, with Dame Joan Collins looking stunning and sexy as ever (and if you are wondering, she turned 86 in May). Her skin is flawless which she puts down to having stopped sunbathing in her twenties and in their South of France home, she is never without her trademark oversized sun hats and statement dark sunglasses. Over six dazzling decades, Joan Collins has achieved the status of Hollywood royalty, through talent, hard work, strength and resilience, traits she shares with her on-screen persona, Alexis Carrington. However, in recent years, she has transformed from being the women ‘we most loved to hate’, to that of an icon and real-life national treasure. Now, thanks to her generosity, shoppers in and around Cobham have a chance to own a unique piece of Hollywood magic, whilst supporting the local children’s hospice charity. KAREN SUGARMAN Behind the successful fundraising campaign for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is Darling’s original cover girl and Executive VP of the charity, Karen Sugarman. Karen has worked tirelessly to raise money for the children’s hospices and convinced many celebrities to get behind this worthy cause. She is particularly thankful for the long-term support from Dame Joan and her hands-on participation. “It’s exciting for Cobham to have such an iconic global star visiting the town. Dame Joan has been a truly fantastic support to our work, embracing the families we care for, whilst helping on so many levels with our critical fundraising. Dame Joan has been a wonderful friend and support for nearly 30 years in my work and her compassion and care is incredible.” The shop will be a key source of income for the leading children’s hospice charity, which supports 700 families across London and Surrey. wing AND A PRAYER Brave Surrey woman conquers her fears and defies gravity with wing walk for National Deaf Children’s Society 54 year old Guildford resident Andrea Weighill, mother of seven, conquered her fears and took on the challenge of a wing walk in support of the National Deaf Children’s Society during Deaf Awareness Week.

Andrea took to the skies atop the wing of a Boeing Stearman biplane operated by the AeroSuperBatics wing walking team at Rendcomb Airfield, Cirencester, for a once in a lifetime 10-minute wing walk at an altitude of 500 feet. She was inspired to conquer her fear of heights and take on her challenge for the Society because she has friends who have deaf children and is affected by hearing loss herself. Andrea is confident of reaching her fundraising target of £1,000 very soon and has raised £727 to date. All the money raised will be donated to the National Deaf Children’s Society, which supports the UK’s 50,000 deaf children, including the over 800 deaf children in Surrey.
I wanted to make people more aware of the National Deaf Children’s Society, who help deaf children and their families through the difficult early years and beyond.
Andrea said: “A friend’s daughter originally challenged three of us to do a wing walk for charity, but due to family circumstances they were unable to do it this time round. Now, I’m not one for heights - just ask anyone who knows me. I don’t even like to walk over bridges if they’re not over water, but after my own hearing deteriorated, I realised how much we take our senses for granted, so I decided to go ahead and do the wing walk solo. I had full confidence in the pilot as we flew over the airfield making sharp turns, steep climbs and dives that took my breath away at times. As we passed my family spectating below, I even had the confidence to let go and wave to them. Jo Quigley, artist I have been passionate about drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. Like many artists I took up teaching to make ends meet before finally taking the plunge to paint full time in 2014. My style developed naturally from my love of drawing and people watching. I take frequent trips to London to observe and photograph people going about their daily lives, often in The South Bank, Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden. No surprise if you guess that I’m influenced by artists such as Hopper and Lowry. My local gallery, The Art Agency in Esher has my work although sometimes they sell it faster than I can paint! They also show my work at art fairs across the UK and close to home at Sandown Contemporary Art Fair and The Affordable Art Fair Battersea.

Two Women, One Destiny: to be THE BEST By Darling tennis historian, Richard Jones from The Tennis Gallery in Wimbledon Park EXACTLY ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO
an extraordinary period in Wimbledon tennis history began. Between 1919 and 1938, two remarkable women took The Championships and the tennis world by storm. Through their intelligence, glamour and success, Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills showed that women could equal and surpass the achievements of men, and they provided inspiration to millions of women around the world. Frenchwoman Suzanne Lenglen played with style and panache in outrageously short skirts, bringing thousands flocking to the All England Club’s Worple Road ground. She won Wimbledon six times between 1919 and 1925, and was never beaten in a completed singles match throughout her career. America’s Helen Wills arrived at Wimbledon as an ordinary Californian schoolgirl and blossomed into, as one writer put it, “the most beautiful woman in America.” When Hollywood

star Charlie Chaplin was asked what was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, he replied “Helen Wills playing tennis.” Helen succeeded Suzanne as the ‘Queen of Wimbledon’, winning eight titles between 1927 and 1938, and during that period lost just four matches anywhere in the world. The two superstars faced each other on court only once, in 1926, when reigning world champion Suzanne won narrowly against up-andcoming twenty-year-old Helen at Cannes on the French Riviera. The world’s press dubbed it ’The Match of the Century.’ The two women’s lives and careers then took very different directions, but they remained inexorably linked by an invisible thread: each had been brought up to be the best, and only by competing against each other could they achieve that pinnacle. Suzanne was a temperamental extrovert, bounding and leaping about the court as she swept her hapless opponents aside, whilst Helen
was sophisticated and demure, winning matches through tactical nous and the pinpoint accuracy of her perfect groundstrokes. Suzanne oozed sex appeal; Helen had the classic beauty of a Greek goddess. They both won many matches 6-0, 6-0, such was their superiority over their contemporaries. Their 1926 match should have been the start of a great rivalry, but fate decreed otherwise. Suzanne had won, but the scoreline of 6-3, 8-6 made it one of the closest matches of her career. Helen had shown she could not only live with the champion, but that she also had the weapons to embarrass her in many of the rallies. The match had an extraordinary false ending when, with Suzanne at match point, Helen’s shot landed in but was called ‘OUT’ by an excited spectator. The players had already shaken hands at the net when the umpire, realising what had happened, ordered play to resume. Suzanne completed her victory a few minutes later, but it was widely believed that Helen had the game to beat Suzanne the next time they met. Only there was no next time. Shortly afterwards an emergency appendectomy in Paris curtailed Helen’s tennis for the year, and later that summer Suzanne, temperamental as ever, stormed out of Wimbledon after a misunderstanding over scheduling which had left Queen Mary waiting in vain to see her play. A few weeks later Suzanne signed a contract for an American tour, thus turning her back on the amateur game and any possibility of a rematch with Helen. The tour was a great success, but afterwards Suzanne slipped quietly into tennis obscurity, the professional game having no other player good enough to challenge her. Restored to full health, Helen won her first Wimbledon title in 1927. In the years that followed she criss-crossed the Atlantic aboard luxury liners, winning four French and eight Wimbledon titles. Encouraged by Californian millionaire James Phelan, a former US Senator and Mayor of San Francisco, she also became a successful writer and artist. Forty years her senior, Phelan, a batchelor, was besotted with Helen. So much so that he arranged for the finest surgeon in Paris to take her appendix out. Mexican artist Diego Rivera controversially depicted Helen as ‘The Spirit of California’ in a mural commissioned by the City of San Francisco in 1931, and later claimed to have had an affair with her. Helen, dignified as ever, made no comment.

Suzanne watched as Helen’s tennis career blossomed. In a last desperate bid to compete again with Helen, Suzanne sought reinstatement as an amateur, but the French Tennis Federation refused her request. Even in her mid-thirties, Suzanne still had the game to challenge Helen, and maybe beat her. But it was not to be. When Suzanne was winning her first Wimbledon Championship back in 1919, Helen had been a schoolgirl starting out in the game. Two decades later, on the same weekend Helen won her eighth and last Wimbledon title, Suzanne died of pernicious anaemia in Paris. A state funeral was held, and Suzanne was posthumously awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest merit award. Helen played one final tournament in Dublin, the week after Suzanne died. In her typical enigmatic fashion, she rushed straight from the trophy presentation and was whisked away by an Irish poet in his Rolls Royce. She never played serious competitive tennis again. Nearly fifty years later, speaking of her retirement, Helen was quoted as saying: “I saw no reason to return to Wimbledon. But I would have gone to Wimbledon again for one reason. I would have gone to play Suzanne again.”

’m sitting in an übercool Tesla Model S with Fiona Howarth CEO of Octopus Electrical Vehicles as she shows me what the car can do through the enormous on-board touch screen. It’s fair to say I’m impressed. Fiona and the team are in town to promote electric vehicles. She is passionate to see a big switch from the fossil fuel driven cars, that are choking us on our urban streets, and causing illnesses such as asthma, to greener and cleaner alternatives
What is going to make private car users to switch to electric models? Fiona: “Electric cars now offer a real option for most users, from sporty high-end Tesla models to very affordable family cars. The batteries last up to 170-300 miles with one charge and rapid charging points are easy to find thanks to apps such as Zap Map. All UK motorway service stations now have rapid EV chargers which power up a battery in as little as 20-30 minutes. The best way to get a feel for electric vehicles is to test drive one. They are a pleasure to drive, very responsive, have plenty of boot space as the traditional engine space is available too, and are really economical to run.

There are even more savings to be made with Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology which allows EV owners to use the electricity from their car to support the grid at times of peak demand. The Divorce Lawyer gets divorced… and gets a lawyer… Says solicitor Kim Marshall of Keystone Law
I
had always imagined that if the worst happened, my husband and I would have an easy, amicable divorce. After all, having practised family law for over 20 years, I was well aware of the pain and expense of an acrimonious split. I had assumed, slightly smugly perhaps, that we would do it well and with the minimum of fuss. But….. when your marriage breaks down and you come to the painful realisation that your spouse no longer has your back, that your interests are no longer aligned, even if

you have children together, the divorce takes on a different complexion and you become aware that you don’t always have control. My emotions were running high, preventing me from thinking clearly. I felt overwhelmed and unable to focus, even with the benefit of legal training and knowledge. Any communication concerning my divorce remained firmly stuck at the bottom of my in-tray. The thought of dealing with the legalities and finances of my own divorce felt bizarrely difficult. Two painful sessions of mediation made me

realise that this wasn’t the way to go and that I needed my own divorce lawyer. “A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client”, was quoted to me on more than one occasion. My lawyer was worth every penny. Two years down the line, the family house, which initially I wanted to hold on to, is about to be sold and the divorce is nearly complete. The experience has brought home to me what an important job family lawyers do, far beyond dispensing legal advice and representing clients in court. These are a few of my takeaways: • You’re probably going to need a lawyer to fight your corner. When you’re going through a breakup or divorce, you need someone objective and dispassionate on your side. Chances are that over the years you’ve consciously or unconsciously slipped into particular ways of communicating with and relating to your partner. This means you’re not necessarily equipped to argue for what’s in your best interests or even know what is and isn’t important. You may not feel strong enough to stand up for yourself at a time of emotional upheaval. Representation by an experienced lawyer will pay for itself many times over. • Take early legal advice - and heed it! I’m hard pressed to think of many cases where delaying seeking legal advice is a good idea. The process of unravelling the life you have built together takes longer than you think. Your lawyer will have been through the process hundreds of times whereas this is likely to be your first. Your lawyer will have a clear idea of the strategy and end game. Listen to her, even if she tells you it may not be realistic to hang onto the family house when you really want to. Ignoring advice
could be costly. An experienced family lawyer will be pragmatic and know when to settle and when to go to court. • Let your lawyer take the strain. There is so much to do and think about when you get divorced. Children may need extra support; your domestic arrangements will alter, and the emotional upheaval can leave you feeling drained and unwilling to tackle important issues. An experienced lawyer can deal with the identification and valuation of matrimonial resources and negotiate an appropriate division and settlement. She can also advise you and negotiate on your behalf concerning the arrangements for the children. This leaves you freer to focus on dealing with the emotional fall out, taking care of yourself and the children and handling practicalities. • Get support from a therapist if you need it. Divorce is one of the most traumatic life experiences which can floor the strongest. Many therapists consider that it’s tougher to cope with than a bereavement. Getting regular counselling can help you process difficult emotions and can be of immense value in helping you see things from a different perspective, for example if you get stuck in negotiations. • “Turn North at Divorce” by psychologist Judy Kennedy and divorce coach Julie Connolly is a brilliant book that I turned to in times of need. eligion has always been a controversial topic. Now religious rights are being tested like never before. A Christian mother is considering taking legal action against Heavers Farm Primary School in Croydon after she and other parents complained that their children had been forced to take part in an LGBT “pride parade” without their knowledge or consent. It is reported that the Christian mother has now withdrawn her child from that school. It is not just Christian parents in Croydon who are raising concerns about the “equality teaching” at primary schools. Across the country there is a backlash against the Government’s relationship education programme which will be made compulsory for all primary school pupils from September 2020.
The complaints by the parents are that the relationship education programme goes against religious teachings about same-sex relationships. The parents are seeking to challenge the remit of the programme and find a solution which allows their children to be able to manifest their religious beliefs at school and be taught about inclusion and diversity. The focus by the primary schools on LGBTQ+ relationships goes against the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity as it specifically excludes the religious stance about such relationships from the programme. If the Government is to go ahead with the compulsory relationship education programme, then it will need to comply with equality law and include as part of the programme the counter-narrative to LGBTQ+ relationships as proclaimed in religious texts.
This will ensure that there is no infringement by the State of the rights of either Christians or Muslims to be able to manifest their religious beliefs. It will also allow the differing viewpoints on LGBTQ+ relationships to be taught on an equal footing. The suspicion of “social engineering” will be put to bed and an inclusive teaching environment will be the outcome. It is now time for the Government to consult with those who have felt excluded and to take into account the religious teachings, which for many, remain the cornerstone of their lives. menopause have to be a rollercoaster ride?
Taboos and myths still surround any discussion of the menopause. Rowena Bevan, Consultant Gynaecologist at Kingston Hospital, wants to help women address these concerns and talks to Holly Candlish about making an informed decision on the best course of action for your personal health and well-being
O
ver 50s women are the fastest growing sctor of the UK workforce and this, combined with the reality that women are enjoying greater life expectancy, make discussions about the menopause more relevant than ever before. And, evaluation of the menopause unsurprisingly means a conversation about HRT. “Unlike our grandparents, women can expect to live 40% of their lives post menopause. That’s a huge chunk of our lives. We live in the wellness era,

women don’t just want to live longer, they want to be healthy and have a decent quality of life, including a good sex life. HRT may have a role to play in increasing our quality of life.” According to Rowena, “the latest NICE guideline says that every woman in their fifties should have the chance to talk through their symptoms with a healthcare professional ,and consider their options including the pros and cons of taking HRT to be able to make an informed decision about it.”

Women can expect to live 40% of their lives post menopause. That’s a huge chunk of our lives. Part of that informed decision is being able to frame the risks associated with HRT and putting those into perspective. HRT was demonised following the Women’s Health Initiative study in 2002. “The data published was quite frightening to the public as it suggested HRT was associated with increased risks of breast cancer and heart disease. Most patients were advised to come off HRT back then. In fact that study looked at an older group of women - the over 60s, most of whom were several years past the menopause - and also looking at a form of HRT, Premarin, made from horse’s urine, which is rarely used now.” Examining the risks includes looking at recent research statistics showing that being overweight with a BMI greater than 30, increases the risk of developing breast cancer by 24/1000 compared to approximately 5/1000 increased risk of developing breast cancer by taking combined HRT over 5 years. Also, and what should literally be a sobering thought, two or more units of alcohol per day increase your risk of breast cancer by a similar amount as taking combined HRT. Rowena highlights the point that new medical thinking determines “there is a window of opportunity for treating women who are around the menopause where HRT might have beneficial effects on the cardio-vascular system, with prevention of coronary heart disease, as well as prevention of osteoporosis, and a reduction in colo-rectal cancers.” The debilitating symptoms like hot flushes, weight gain, night sweats, anxiety and mood swings are well known, but there are other problems that many patients feel too embarrassed to bring up with their GPs. “It’s thought that 57% of women suffer from late onset symptoms even after they’ve been through the menopause; symptoms that people write off as, ‘I’m just getting old’. Women come to see me complaining of vaginal dryness, urinary frequency and cystitis –like symptoms. They don’t realise that these can often be easily treated with vaginal oestrogen and moisturisers. more difficult to treat but transdermal HRT (the patch or gel) frees up testosterone in our system and a few patients may benefit from using testosterone gel. “ There’s a lot more that can be argued about the pros and cons of taking HRT and more often than not newspaper and on-line reports can leave us without a clue. However, one thing medical experts like Rowena agree upon is the need for women to seek expert help and make the best decision for themselves regarding HRT based on medical evidence. ‘Though she’s the first to admit, “We’ve been for it, against it, for it again, the evidence has been a rollercoaster - a bit like the menopause itself!” Rowena Bevan is a Consultant Gynaecologist working in the NHS at Kingston Hospital where she is a General Gynaecologist and Person Responsible for the Assisted Conception Unit. She offers private treatment at the New Victoria Hospital, Kingston and Parkside Hospital, Wimbledon. She graduated from Queens’ College, Cambridge University, in 1985 and completed her clinical training at Guy’s Hospital. She performed research in Sydney for two years before obtaining subspecialty Reproductive Medicine status in 1998 training under Professor Lord Winston and Professor Lesley Regan.

Hampton Court Festival has a stunning line up of artists this year, but one thing is certain, Kylie Minogue and Dutch songstress Caro Emerald, will bring star quality and pop magic to the grounds of the Tudor palace and Darling will be there living the dream Kylie Minogue has topped the charts since the 80s and is performing a string of No.1 hits along with tracks from her latest album, Golden. The princess of pop says of the title – Golden - that it is a reference to women not having to justify or worry about their age; it’s a message to women everywhere, ‘We’re not young, we’re not old, we’re golden.’ Co-written by Minogue, the album was partly recorded in the famous musical city of Nashville and features a mix of Country and

Western inspired tracks that still have a strong dance feel. The majority of fans will be happy that she hasn’t strayed too far from her pop roots. 30 years after the release of I Should be So Lucky, life is looking good for Kylie: she has enjoyed huge success with the album; is rumoured to be in a new relationship with GQ magazine’s creative director, Paul Solomons and is headlining Glastonbury. Kylie really is the ‘Golden Girl’ of pop.

The other female artist set to wow festival audiences with her sultry performance is Caro Emerald. Caro is just as cool, bright and sassy as her music. She has a distinctive sound, and a distinctive look: both are sultry, sexy and joyful. On stage she looks like she’s stepped straight off the film set of Casablanca, with a feminine and timeless Hollywood style. An astute writer came up with the name of her first album, Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor:

One of the tracks to come from that is the catchy Coming Back a Man and she says, “It doesn’t mean I don’t like being a woman,
I love being a woman and I wouldn’t want to complain about stuff. However, it’s a male driven industry - mostly everyone, from songwriters to label managers, are male. Even though the majority of jazz singers I studied with were female, if you look at the headliners, 95% are male. How is that possible? The gender gap raises a lot of questions.” Apart from that one concern about the music industry, Caro is the first to acknowledge it has given her a wonderful life, combining music with raising two small girls, aged one and five years old. “I’m in a luxurious position: when I had my first baby I was already established, so I can choose how hard I work and what gigs and interviews I do.” Performing
at the Hampton Court Palace is a gig she chooses to come back to - loving everything about it from the Dutch Masters on the walls of the backstage ‘dressing room’, to the romantic atmosphere of the venue. Her style suits the intimate courtyard - “we really take people into a different world, it will be like you are in a scene from a movie somewhere; we play with the visuals and the backdrop so that everything you see supports what you hear. The Livin’ ain’t easy

S
ummertime - and the blight of exams and results. It’s bad enough for kids, so I don’t understand why people my age still submit themselves to the ordeal of exams: diploma in this, Masters in that, qualification in the other. Some of my friends are currently beavering away like nerds. For Pete’s sake! The whole consolation of age is that we don’t have to do exams anymore. We passed our driving tests. That should have been the last of it. My studious daughter, whose life revolves around being examined pitilessly on various abstruse topics, wakes up at roughly the same time as me each day, (or, ahem, possibly a bit earlier.) I assume her first thought is ‘Aaargh - enfold me once again, sweet oblivion!’ Mine is ‘Woo hoo - Ely’s 20% Off Day!’ So carefree. You probably still get bad dreams about exams. They are a natural symptom of stress and feeling unprepared. French O level seems to be a favourite recurring one for lots of people. Divorcing? Moving house? Worried about your job? Bring on the French O level dream. You haven’t revised anything, and now you are sitting naked at a desk, surreally outside on the school hockey pitch, attempting Question 1, all your verbs disagreeing violently with their preceding direct objects. I still get nightmares about my Russian O level, trying to translate something in Cyrillic about Svetlana at the Collective Farm. Hopeless. (WHY did I do Russian? Cold War era - I thought, come the invasion, they might not shoot me if I had a smattering of Russian.) 42

Of course, official advice to the youth is this: attend lessons, pay attention, take notes, keep up-to-date with homework, revise methodically and practise exam questions. Heck - I taught A-level long enough to know the drill, and how laughably irrelevant this guidance is to a certain sort of student (boys). I remember one pupil confessing at the eleventh hour that his notes were in a bit of a mess. ‘How bad?’ I asked. He proffered a Tesco carrier bag halffull of crumpled bits of paper and an apple core. That was it. His entire ‘file’ on Hamlet. Bet he still has bad dreams about it. If you are that kid, (and aren’t we all - or what’s the matter with you? Some sort of boff or something?) and it’s too late to do anything about it this summer, here’s my advice for tackling examinations successfully in the future: Grow Up. I’m afraid there is no other way. Which possibly explains why I still refuse to do them.
