Darling has a chat to Gina Miller, our exceptional inspiring woman of Wimbledon

A

s a young girl growing up with three boisterous brothers, until my sister came along six years later, I was a Tom-boy climbing trees, reading Marvel Comic books and being ‘Super Woman’ long before the Western Press started using the term. This upbringing gave me a real sense of equality and fearlessness and as a born cynic, I have always tended to question the status quo and be somewhat of a restless misfit.

With this pre-disposition, I arrived in the UK from South America aged 11. It was a harsh adaptation from my childhood freedom, lush garden and warmth, in terms of weather, culture and family, to what was, for me, a cold, grey boarding school. After school, I studied Law and was determined to pursue a career as a criminal barrister until I came up against the sexist, elitist world of the UK Legal Bar, which, in 1982, was very resistant to women. This led me to take a year out, in which I discovered the exciting, creative world of business. But my legal training was not wasted. It gave me invaluable skills which I could apply in a dynamic way in the world of business. Although I was not certain where and what I wanted to do, I was certain what I did not want. I did not want to be constrained by a large corporate environment and be a cog in a far bigger machine; I wanted the challenge of building the machine, of being an entrepreneur.

So here I am today, with three Direct to Consumer online wealth brands, aiming to challenge and disrupt the investment industry, and a Philanthropic Foundation, seeking to encourage ‘smarter giving’ and lightening the burden for other donors who wish to give efficiently but may be time poor. My passion for ethics and fairness saw me launch a True and Fair Campaign in 2012 calling for 100% transparency in the pension and investment industries and a Code of Ethics which led to changes in regulations, governing transparency of cost and products and wider investor consumer protection.

I am passionate about helping women to be more confident and comfortable with finance, especially their future financial health. Money gives men power to define their lives. As women we need to step up and do the same, not just to be equal but to be independent and in control.

This is why I launched MoneyShe last year.

I am a very proactive positive person, who is permanently in ‘fidget’ mode, prepared to work whatever hours it takes to make my businesses successful and my family happy and balanced.

People often ask me how I achieve a work/life balance but my answer is I don’t, there is just life and choices I have made. I would say one of my best choices was persuading my husband to move from Chelsea to Wimbledon. darlingmagazine.co.uk | nov-jan 2016

Every day I wake up and love the view of our garden, the school run to Kings and Putney High, the walks to the Windmill, the sense of village and friendliness. And as a mad Oscar Wilde fan, I could not be happier to be so close to Cannizaro House.

A few months ago she discovered a wonderful space downstairs at the antiques emporium, Just Pause, and transformed the room by restoring the stunning period features. The elegant and intimate shop environment she created is a perfect match for Stefanie’s well-honed sense of what might suit each customer. “Vintage is about the discovery of something unique. I love the moment when someone falls in love with a piece and it looks as if it has been waiting for them!”

W

hen Zara Elliot, beautician/ permanent makeup artist, arrived to join our Athena Women’s Network in the summer and mentioned she did tattoos, my eyes lit up! I have always wanted some but not the usual butterflies, birds, Celtic symbols, twiney vines and flowers, totem animals or even special quotes - no, I wanted eyeliner tattoos. I first heard about them when I was in the States years ago and thought, what a good idea but had never met anyone who did them until Zara breezed into my life. In fact the whole room full of women’s eyes lit up! Being brave and decisive, I booked myself in for a Semi-Permanent Eyeliner Consultation and a patch test.

Zara’s studio was clean, calm and organised and full of impressive endorsements in the form of loads of certificates and a special treatment licence issued by London Borough of Kingston and a large portfolio of advanced training, which made me feel comfortable in the knowledge that she knew what she was doing.

On the day of my procedure she put a protective eye ointment on to protect the eye and a topical anaesthetic was applied. She mixed an eyeliner shade that is perfect for my skin tone and started. My eyes remained closed during treatment, the bed was warm and I was listening to floaty Tibetan tinkling bell music (my choice) throughout. I hardly felt a thing. Just a bit of scratching in the beginning to really get the anaesthetic to penetrate. What a relief! Much better than going to the dentist.

After 6 weeks I went back for the follow up and tweaking and now look forward to having glam eyes for the next 3 years with a ‘boost’ every 12-18 months to keep it looking fresh. I can handle that!

Modern French Restaurant Wows Wimbledon Village

hef/restaurateur Eric Guignard opened The White Onion in Wimbledon Village recently. Eric and his wife, Sarah, have owned The French Table in Surbiton, for the past 14 years, and have collaborated with investors for their new site in the heart of Wimbledon Village.

While Eric will remain at The French Table, he will oversee the menus and general operation of The White Onion with head chef Frédéric Duval, who worked with him at The French Table for eight years.

Situated in the heart of Wimbledon Village, the restaurant was previously The Lawn Bistro. The constantly evolving, seasonal modern French/Mediterranean à la carte menu features a broad selection of original dishes. Restaurant manager/ co-owner’, Beggy Ashurov is enthusiastic over the new Christmas menu which will include exciting dishes for example - Perigord goat’s cheese in ginger bread crumbs with purple potato foam, spicy nuts and aged balsamic to start; sea bream with seaweed cannelloni, lobster sauce and Parmesan tuile as main course, and for dessert, chocolate moelleux with vanilla ice cream. Many other

highly inventive dishes are on offer for the discerning local clientele.

Prices for starters range from £9.20 - £12.80, while main courses are £19.80 - £28.50, and desserts are all £7, with cheese at £12.50. There is a set lunch menu - Thursday - Saturday at £16.50 for two courses or £19.50 for three, and on Sundays it is £21.50 for two courses (or£25.50 for three).

There is a short international wine list of approximately 150 bins, with bottles priced from £19 (glass £3.50), and Champagne from £57 (glass £9.50).

The 70-seat space spans two rooms (one to the rear of the restaurant with a greenhouse ceiling), and has been lightly refurbished, offering an informal ambience that is wellsuited to the local business and residential clientele. Our beautiful, blue dining room is available for private hire and can seat up to 22 people.

IN MEMORY OF MOLLY BURDETT

W

imbledon born and bred, we will remember Molly for her cheery and dazzling smile, gregarious outgoing nature and chatty warmth. At 19 she was at the peak of her social and academic life studying Primary Education at St Mary’s Twickenham. An X-Holy Trinity, Putney Park and Sutton High girl, Molly was much loved in many intertwined circles.

Working relentlessly toward her teaching degree, restricted breathing and then an undiagnosed (by 2 G.P’s), bout of glandular fever took us to St. George’s A&E. In the General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) life threatening Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) took hold and Molly fought for 6 weeks on life support treated by amazing professionals. We lost her on July 1 this year.

We set up Molly’s Smile Fund in her beautiful memory and our huge ‘Molly’ community have Mel Wilde Photography Volunteers who helped raise £2,243 at South Park Gardens event in September

SUPER PARENTS No such thing, says therapist Pam Custers

T

here is no such thing as the perfect parent. There I said it! Many of us strive for that goal which is no bad thing but not if it makes us feel like a failure. Children don’t need a super parent, nor the perfect version of you - just you, warts and all. We can easily get trapped into thinking we have to be perfect at all times. We all have good and bad moments but the important thing is to hold the ideal as a goal and know how to get ourselves back on track when things go awry. If we embrace the fact that we make mistakes, we can then do something about it. We can enjoy parenting to the full.

Key to good parenting is to model behaviour that we want our children to have. If you are polite and considerate your children have a better chance of behaving like this too. If you and your child don’t agree, brainstorm different options to tackle the conundrum.

Relax about whether you are saying the right or wrong thing, make an educated guess and if your little one has more info on the subject be happy about being enlightened. Make mistakes! “Oops, I interrupted you, sorry”.

Play with your children, relaxing and just allowing some free play, will connect you with your child. We can turn our imperfect parenting to being our strength with just a little bit of self reflection and being kind to oneself. Ideally you will be learning as much as your children. Parenting is a moving feast.

If one set of parenting tips doesn’t work that’s OK - try something else. If parenting is overwhelming you, that’s OK too. Seeking help is not a sign of failure - indeed it shows that you want to have a flourishing family.

WIMBLEDON’S TRUE COUNTRY HOUSE Peter and Vivien Beckwith prepare to move on and put their beautiful Prospect House on the market

H

idden behind two electric gates along a private driveway in leafy Wimbledon, Prospect House is an historic, quintessentially English, Victorian manor house. Constructed in 1867, the property has undergone several transformations.

Originally, the home of an East India Trading Company director and his large family, it was then the playground of a Wimbledon socialite and after that it became a hospital annexe. Finally, in the mid-1990s, it was taken pity on by property developer Peter Beckwith. With his keen eye and passion for restoring and protecting listed buildings, Peter decided to breathe new life into the pitiful plight of this potentially wonderful building and create a beautiful home.

This was no redecorating job however, since the property was on English Heritage’s At-Risk Register and had lain abandoned for years, frequented only by squatters and gangs of children determined to burn the place down.

‘I had originally planned to try and refurbish the property, but if it were beyond repair, then to knock it down and start again with a new residential development,’ Peter admits. ‘With some inspired architectural input from Edward Hill, a plan was created to save the building and restore it to its former glory.’ Today, the original Victorian structure remains, together with the addition of a splendid Victorian style conservatory

and skylights in the flat roof between the magnificent pitched eaves. An impressive entrance hall leads one to several elegant reception rooms on the ground floor, including a formal dining room. The kitchen, in stark contrast to those usually found in listed buildings is very large, open-plan and airy and fronts the conservatory, which makes the most of the visually stunning garden backdrop. Upstairs, the master suite enjoys breath-taking views over the two acres of spectacular gardens and beyond towards Epsom Downs. From the first floor windows there is a clear view over the heated swimming pool and the floodlit tennis court below.

‘The gracious reception rooms were designed for entertaining our friends at lunch and dinner parties. Today, my wife Vivien, who regularly presents chamber concerts at her house in Chelsea, often holds evenings of opera here in Prospect House. We can seat up to 80 people for a reception and concert and recently we hosted an evening of opera for Zac Goldsmith, attended by MP Stephen Hammond and other close supporters.’

A will can be more powerful than you may first imagine. With the correct planning, a will can be used as a mechanism to ensure your affairs are in order and your wishes are put into practice. Below are Hart Brown’s top 10 reasons for making a will.

1.Retaining control and flexibility Just as one size does not fit all, neither does a will. Your will is an expression of your own personal wishes tailored to suit your personal circumstances. A will gives you the power and flexibility to decide who inherits from your estate and gives you peace of mind that 32

your beneficiaries will inherit in the most effective way possible. You can also use trusts to make your wills very flexible so that any later changes in circumstances can be taken into account.

2.Who are your closest relatives?

If you do not have a will, the rules of intestacy can be undesirable. An unknown cousin could inherit rather than a friend or a favourite charity. With a will, the power is in your hands to ensure that the right beneficiaries of your choosing inherit from your estate.

3.Young children If you have children under the age of 18 and die without a will appointing guardians, the state will decide who should look after them.

This alone is one of the most important reasons for making a will.

4.Second marriages If you have children from an earlier marriage or relationship, you may wish to provide for your children and your new partner. By making a will you can ensure that all of your loved ones are properly provided for.

5.Unmarried couples The myth of the ‘Common Law Marriage’ is widespread and so it may come as a surprise to learn that upon your death, your surviving partner will not have the automatic right to inherit from your estate. This is one of the reasons why a will is so very important for unmarried couples.

6.Vulnerable beneficiaries

If funds are left to a vulnerable beneficiary, they may not be able to manage those funds or may be taken advantage of. They may also lose means-tested state benefits. A properly drafted trust within a will can be used to provide protection for that beneficiary.

7.Business owners

Not only can a bespoke will govern the practicalities of who inherits your business, it can also be used as a tax saving vehicle to maximise inheritance tax savings. It is also important to ensure that the governing documents in relation to your business allow it to be inherited in accordance with your wishes.

8.Saving inheritance tax for the next generation Are your next of kin or your children already financially secure? If so, you may wish to consider using a will as part of your inheritance tax planning to safeguard your estate for younger generations.

9.Charitable giving Did you know that gifts to registered charities are entirely exempt from inheritance tax? So giving money to charity could not only help to unlock a cure for a particular illness or help to improve the lives of many but also comes with the added advantage of reducing your inheritance tax liability.

10.Care fees planning Finally, a will can be a useful tool for planning if the issue of funding for care is important to you. The use of a trust within your will can have many advantages in respect of ring fencing your estate for your loved ones.

2. Repair leaky taps. Check the kitchen, bathrooms and utility room locations inside and don’t forget outside taps too.

3. Get your fireplace serviced. Some people use their fireplace more than their central heating in the winter months.

Discard old ashes and hire a professional chimney sweep, if needed.

4. Programme your thermostat. Setting your thermostat to lower the temperature automatically at night, and when you’re not home, can result in substantial cost savings.

5. Get insulated. Proper cavity wall and loft insulation will keep your home warmer, and will save you money on your energy bills. Check the lagging on pipes to make sure they’re protected from plummeting temperatures and locate stop taps for your water supply in case of emergency.

6. Test home safety devices. The risk of a house fire is higher during the colder months as we use heating appliances more.

Make sure you replace the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure they’re working properly.

7. Inspect your chimney, gutters and roof.

Remove leaves and other debris and check for leaks, particularly around openings such as skylights. Look for missing, damaged, or loose shingles and check the flashing around your chimney.

8. Inspect trees and landscaping. Check for damaged limbs that may break or that are too close to power lines or the roof. Prune back bushes, shrubs and flowers.

9. Protect pots and planters over winter.

If you keep plants in pots year-round, bring them inside to protect them from frost, wind, and fluctuating temperatures.

10. Clean and store seasonal outdoor furniture. Remove and clean cushions.

robably the most eclectic and creative hair salon in the SWs. Nestled in Raynes Park, Love & Dye was started two years ago by entrepreneurs Piotr Rozanski and Bruce Cox. With 20 years of experience in the hairdressing industry, they have created a unique place which is so much more than just a hairdresser’s.

“The idea was to utilize the space in creative ways to provide a cultural and social hub for the local community and for our clients”, says Piotr.

First came the weekly community art classes, which run every Wednesday at 7.30pm on a pop-in basis. The group works together on a different theme each week to create fun artworks in many different media. All materials are provided for a small donation and it doesn’t matter if you’re a pro or a first time artist.

Recent exhibitions by professional artists include fabulous work portraying jazz musicians by Justin Nortcott.

Then came the music. Piotr and Bruce, playing guitars themselves, converted an additional space in the salon into a music studio providing one-to-one singing, guitar, drums and piano lessons by professional teachers. So if you would like to have fun learning a new instrument this is the place to start!

Classes are designed to suit all levels and ages. Music is at the heart of the salon’s experience and clients can show off their skills on a grand piano while waiting for their hair service. Love & Dye organises live music events with up to 30 people in the audience.

Previous performances saw soul, jazz and alternative artists.

Thanks to its eco-friendly practices, Love & Dye was awarded a Green Business Certificate, and it’s now officially on the Merton Arts Trail. An inviting garden centre in front of the shop offers all sorts of plants for sale as well as beautiful, selected vintage garden furniture.

Time, Ladies, Please!

ow that Panto and Nutcracker season is upon us, it’s time to tackle the sheelephant in the room, and talk about ladies’ loos. (Warning: explicit lavatorial content to follow.)

Having wasted every single theatre interval recently in an endless queue for a smelly little cubicle, rather than splashing my cash in, admittedly, ditto, the theatre bar, to enjoy a well-earned warm white wine, I’m in the mood to let rip. What the heck is going on?

Whether it’s a crumbling West End vaudeville dive, or a modern venue like the O2, what unites them is the inevitable 10 mile, snaillike queue for the ladies. Who designed these places? Sioux warriors trained to go for days with no pee-pee? Spotty teenage architect students who have yet to acquire any firsthand knowledge of a woman’s anatomical inability to splash and dash in a urinal or privet hedge on the way home?

Blame also has to rest with the clientele.

What do women DO in these loos? Who spends over 5 minutes in a theatre loo? Are they sitting there reading their programme, enjoying the fresh breeze on their nethers?

multiple layers of Victorian hosiery and corsetry? Are they squeamishly waiting for the tank to refill, to do a ‘proper flush’? Whatever it is, ladies, get a spurt on. There are dozens of us outside, desperate to fit in a Chardonnay and a chitchat, as well as a comfort break.

Half the time, these bog-blockers also walk out leaving a horror show. As a friend of mine says, “If you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be neat and wipe the seat.” (She’s very poetic, my friend.) Frankly, if things don’t get better, I’m thinking of organising Women’s Education Event Which Ends Erratic Splashing, (WEEWEES.) Rather like the posters in men’s loos which politely advise, ‘Our aim is to keep these toilets clean.

Your aim will help’ this awareness-raising exercise would focus on the simple idea of using a public facility in a way which shows a modicum of consideration, and not as your own private khazi where only you have to deal with your liberally splattered secretions.

So, in the Interval, remember ladies: It’s no bother if you hover, but get out quick and leave no ick.
