TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has officially opened the Mamire Gate on the western side of Tarangire National Park, providing a new entry point for visitors travelling through Babati District in the Manyara Region. The Mamire Gate is a key link between Tanzania’s Central and Northern zones, making Tarangire more accessible to visitors from Dodoma, Singida, and Manyara. Notably, tourists travelling from Dar es Salaam can now use the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Dodoma and continue by road via Babati - bypassing the previously required route through Arusha - opening a more direct and efficient corridor to one of Tanzania’s most celebrated national parks.

African & Indian Ocean hotel groups, airlines, tourism organisations, beach resorts and safari lodges are invited to participate at this live face-to-face TravelExpo on Friday, 31 July at Johari Rotana Hotel Dar es Salaam. The focus of this TravelExpo will be to promote domestic tourism as well as inter-regional tourism to African countries as well as overseas countries. Dar es Salaam is served by many regional & international airlines including SAA, Air Tanzania, Airlink, Turkish Airlines, Qatar, Emirates, Fly Dubai, Uganda Airlines, Kenya Airways, Rwandair, KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, Egypt Air, Oman Air with other airlines looking at the potential to fly into DAR. Meru

Only minutes from bustling Arusha are spots that look and feel as they did decades ago. But everywhere, too, is transition as the WaArusha and WaMeru peoples adapt tradition to progress and science. Visitors can meet a traditional healer, learn about animal husbandry and agri-culture, and buy carvings and foodstuffs from local handicraft cooperatives or women’s business.

Southern Pare Mountains

Walk the most remote mountains of northern Tanzania with local farmers, through traditional Pare villages and dense tropical forests. From half day to three day guided hikes, this is an opportunity to step into the culture of the Pare people. Visit the Mghimbi Caves, secret hiding place during the slave raids, the proceed to Malameni Rock, the scene of human sacrifices to appease evil spirits up until the 1930s. Walk through the Ikongwe Village, believe by locals to be a gift from heaven, surrounded by mountain terraces and small waterfalls. Profits from these tours are used to subsidise much needed energy saving stoves and educational scholarship.

Usambara

Africa’s Switzerland, a hiker’s paradise, with dozens of varied treks from half a day to a week. The stunning mountainous district of Lushoto was home to one of Tanzania’s great historical kingdoms.

There are two key seasons in Tanzania, and each creates a different safari experience.

• The dry season, between June and October, is great for wildlife viewing, as the vegetation has dried up and wildlife gather around the last available water sources.

A Taste of Home Sri Lankans Celebrate New Year in Tanzania

The Sri Lankan community in Dar es Salaam came together in a vibrant display of culture and unity to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 05 April 2025. The event reflected the rich traditions of Sri Lanka while highlighting the strong bonds within the diaspora in Tanzania.

The celebration was graced by Ms. Ruvini De Silva, Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Kenya, whose presence underscored the importance of cultural connections between Sri Lanka and its overseas communities.

Organized by Hiran Sumanaweera, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka to Tanzania, together with the Sri Lankan community in Dar es Salaam, the event drew enthusiastic participation from Sri Lankans across the country, including those traveling from Zanzibar and Arusha.

The celebration brought together families and individuals of all ages, creating an atmosphere filled with joy, nostalgia, and cultural pride. It beautifully captured the warmth and spirit of Sri Lankan festivities, even thousands of miles away from home.

Guests were treated to an abundant spread of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, featuring a variety of sweet and savoury delicacies served during breakfast and lunch. These culinary offerings added an authentic touch to the day’s festivities

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known as Aluth Avurudda, is one of Sri Lanka’s most significant cultural festivals. Celebrated in mid-April according to the solar calendar, it symbolizes renewal, prosperity, and unity. Traditions such as lighting the hearth, preparing milk rice (kiribath), exchanging sweets, and observing auspicious times remain central to the celebration, fostering togetherness among families and communities.

A key highlight of the event was the lineup of traditional New Year games, which added excitement and encouraged active participation across generations. Popular games included Kana Mutti Bindeema (breaking the clay pot), where blindfolded participants attempt to strike a suspended pot; Kotta Pora (pillow fighting on a beam), a lively test of balance and friendly competition; and Aliyata Asa Thabeema (pin the eye on the elephant), a playful activity requiring focus and precision. These games not only entertained but also rekindled cherished memories of home for many participants.

At the end of the day, a day-andnight cricket league was held with the participation of four Sri Lankan teams. Team Tanzalion, led by Hasshan, emerged as the champions, while Team Ceylon Tusker, led by Lalinda, were the runners-up.

Through such initiatives, the Sri Lankan community in Tanzania continues to preserve and promote its cultural heritage, strengthening ties both within

the community and with the broader Tanzanian society.

In the ninth or tenth centuries came Shirazi

Persians from modernday Iran, sailing their ancient dhows across the Indian Ocean. Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Indonesian merchants and pirates, traders and adventurers, all arrived over the centuries during which the Swahili coast was the centre of a thriving commercial civilisation, with its own language, economy and artistic traditions. Today, reminders of the

post can be found up and down the length of Tanzania. The brassbound chests and heavy wooden doors of the Swahili Empire are found on a far island, imported originally by the Arabic slave traders who led caravans into the interior in search of fortune. On the coast itself, crumbling mosques nestle among palm trees by white beaches and Persian baths lie ruined in the remains of ancient villas.

BAGAMOYO

Bagamoyo was once the centre of slave and ivory trading. It was the last point reached by the caravans of slaves who arrived here for transportation to faraway places. Today this attractive coastal town still bears while waiting for transportation still stands, as does the tree under which they were bought and sold.

KILWA Kilwa Kisiwani Island was

once the trading centre of the Swahili Empire. The ruins of the settlement still remain and are considered to be one of the most important Swahili historical sites in East African. The famous traveller and chronicler lbn Battuta visited Kilwa in the 14th century, describing his admiration for the architecture and graceful situation of the capital city. Later the island became a trading post for slaves travelling north from Mauritius and Mozambique.

The end of the town supremacy as a trading port came when it was ransacked, ostensibly by “cannibals’’ in 1588.

MAFIA ISLAND

from ancient Yemen who dominated the coast around archipelago, off beaten track and known to only the most discerning travellers. The island is surrounded by a barrier reef so rich in marine life it has been designated a marine park by the World

Wide Fund for Nature. A tiny population of pygmy hippo lives in the remains of an old lagoon, cut off from the mainland centuries.

PEMBA

Pemba Island, rumored to have once been inhabited by a race of mythical giants, is an untouched beauty that offers an undiluted experience of island life in the Indian Ocean. The tiny number of visitors to Pemba every year means that the

island has little in the way of tourist infrastructure – which for alternative travellers is the main attraction. Small guesthouses are dotted around the island, and there are a couple of upmarket diving hotels and resorts. There are many historical sites and ruins to explore on Pemba including a number of old mosques and tombs and the old town fort of Chake Chake. The Pujini ruins south-east of Chake Chake are the remnants of the 13th century. There is also Ngezi Forest, a beautiful untouched rainforest and home to the Pemba Flying Fox, a giant bat!

TANGA AND PANGANI

Ruins close to the active port of Tanga attest to its importance as a trading post in the Swahili trading empire. The ruins, once a large mosque, include more than 40 tombs, Tanga has pleasant beaches and is a convenient

point from which to visit the spectacular Usambara Mountains. Just south of Tanga is Pangani, once the home of Arab slave traders, set on a lovely estuary of the Panani River.

ZANZIBAR (UNGUJA ISLAND)

For a small island in the southern waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar has a long and unexpected history. For centuries the island has been a centre of slave and ivory trade, if not all trading, from central Africa to the rest of the world and was the world’s main producer of the highly valued clove spice. It is also the centre of Swahili language and culture. Zanzibar is the undisputed capital of the Swahili coast.

This was to last only 50 years until the British, keen on expanding their colonial reach, declared Zanzibar a British Protectorate. This, in turn, was to last until 1963, when the British handed power back to the Sultan in a constitutional monarchy which was itself overthrown in early 1964 in a violent revolution which established the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, which rules the country to this day.

The Launch of ‘Exim Supply Chain’

Majority of Tanzanian businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), continue to face challenges in accessing financing. Common hurdles include cash flow gaps, high financing costs, fragmented business relationships, reliance on manual processes, as well as limited access to working capital often locked within supply chain cycles, which can slow operations and limit growth opportunities.

To address these challenges, Exim Bank Tanzania has launched a new financial solution, Exim Supply Chain, a fully automated Supply Chain Finance platform designed to simplify and accelerate access to financing for businesses and SMEs. The solution aims to create a more inclusive financing ecosystem by enabling both buyers and suppliers to benefit from improved access to affordable financing.

The solution enables customers to submit financing requests from their offices through an online platform, with funds disbursed within approximately 15 minutes of receiving a complete application. Exim Supply Chain offers a range of financial services, including supplier financing, payable finance, LPO financing, distributor finance, and factoring, covering both

buyer-centric and supplier-centric financing needs. The platform operates through a single integrated system managed by Exim Bank, eliminating the need for third-party intermediaries and ensuring a seamless end-to-end process from invoice submission to final settlement.

Financing is provided based on the creditworthiness of the buyer, without requiring additional collateral from suppliers, dealers and other service providers.

Over time, Exim Bank Tanzania has continued to provide financial solutions addressing the broader needs of businesses, including trade finance services for domestic and international transactions, working capital financing, and investments in digital banking to improve accessibility. The Bank has also prioritised the empowerment of women and youth as part of its broader financial inclusion strategy.

Speaking during the launch, the Chief Finance Officer Shani Kinswaga of Exim Bank Tanzania said the solution forms part of the Bank’s broader strategy to enhance access to financial services for all customers.

“The launch of Exim Supply Chain demonstrates our commitment to using technology to solve real business challenges.

This fully automated solution enables businesses to access financing quickly, reduce working capital pressures, and strengthen relationships between buyers and suppliers” he said.

On his part, the Senior Manager for Trade Finance Business Operations & Service Delivery at Exim Bank Tanzania, Innocent Buzoya, said the solution is designed to address challenges related to access to financing within the business ecosystem.

“Exim Supply Chain has been designed to address the common obstacles businesses face in accessing financing. By digitising the process, we reduce processing time and support smoother operations for SMEs and suppliers alike” he said.

Exim Bank stated that the Exim Supply Chain solution is available through its branches as well as the Trade Finance Unit, and encouraged business stakeholders to reach out for more information on how to access the service.
