KILWA ISLAND

The Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority received a ship of about 230 tourists from various countries in the world who arrived at the World Cultural Heritage Park of Kilwa Ruins on the island and Songo Tower for tourism activities. The ship known as “Silver Clouds” anchored in the park carrying tourists from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Germany, Ireland and Norway while other tourists came from Italy, Portugal, Africa South, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, Great Britain and the United States. This is a continuation of the trips of tourists from different corners of the world to see for themselves the pride of the world heritage of culture, history and antiquities that exist in the park managed by TAWA. It should be noted that this Park has been receiving many visitors from inside and outside our country where recently (February, 2024) the Park received more than 900 foreign tourists from different parts of the world for tourism activities, a number that is said to break the record in the park.

MT KILIMANJARO TOURISM

The minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ms Angella Kairuki, has announced significant changes to the tourism license fee structure for tour operators as she seeks to trim down on the costs of doing business and boost the number of tourists. The new measure will see a 50 percent reduction of the annual Mount Kilimanjaro climbing business license fee from $2000 to $1000 effective July 1,204, drawing widespread praise from industry players. The strategic decision is part of the government`s broad plan to quadruple annual tourist’s numbers to Africa’s highest mountain from 56,000 to 200,000 and reap more dollars.

In the coastal lands and towns of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia, you can find some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, most extravagant diving spots and fantastic historical experiences. Zanzibar is the most popular beach and honeymoon destination in Tanzania. It features clear, turquoise-blue water, shallow sandbars, and many small islands. Aside from the gorgeous stretches of white sand beaches and the many diving and fishing spots, Zanzibar also houses many historical and cultural areas including the UNESCO World Heritage Site,

Whichever part of Tanzania you decide to explore on your next trip, you will surely gain a memorable adventure – one that’ll haunt your travel desires for a long time. ICULTURAL TOURISM

“Cultural tourism programmes are benefi cial to everyone – the tourists get a unique, unforgettable experience, the local people generate income and improve their standard of living…”

n Tanzania, a land of superb landscapes and spectacular wildlife, another attraction stands equally tall- the people. Tanzania’s people are among the most welcoming and approachable on earth, with a range of fascinating cultures ready to be shared with visitors. From the wachagga of the slopes of Kilimanjaro to the now world-famous Maasai, a cultural excursion or a longer stay among local people is likely to become one of the most rewarding experiences of any holiday I Tanzania.

In addition, many local areas run their own cultural programmes for visitors, bringing income directly to the community and giving the people the chance to show their lifestyle to the outside world on their own terms. Primary schools can be developed through a tour of the fascinating slopes of Mt Meru; a health clinic is improved through a guided tour of the luscious green Usambara Mountains, or a kindergarten funded by a stroll through the tropical vegetation of the Rift Valley.

Cultural tourism programmes are benefi cial to everyone – the tourists get a unique, unforgettable experience, the local people generate income and improve their standard of living, and both parties gain valuable understanding of another culture which will last long after the visitors have returned home. Most cultural tourism programmes are located near the main through fares of the principal tourist destinations, making a cultural addition to a safari easy to arrange. Guides are local people born and raised in the area, well trained in their jobs and proficient in English.

Cultural tours can be half-day events or incorporated into a longer safari. Whether you spend the morning in a Maasai boma or trek by camel up a local summit, stopping to learn about traditional plants and tribal stories, a cultural tour is must-do for anyone wanting to see the rich life of the Tanzania people. Some of Tanzania’s bestknown cultural tourism destinations include:

Eyasi

Home to some of the last hunter-gatherers in Africa, the Hadzabe bushmen have made the area around Lake Eyasi their long-time hunting grounds. Day-trips or longer safaris with the hadzabe bushmen give visitors a chance to experience a way of life that has long since vanished elsewhere on the planet. Morning hunts with the Hadzabe warriors, armed with bows and arrows, offer a fascinating glimpse into an ancient way of life. Honey-gathering, walks to find traditional healing plants and food, and traditional dances are all part of the Hadzabe cultural tourism experience.

Kilimanjaro

Why not combine a hike up the world’s most impressive mountain with a visit to its people, the historically progressive WaChagga? See traditional and modern Chagga art, culture and homes.

Maasailand

See how the Maasai, among the last of the world’s pastoral peoples, are adapting to the 21st century in their own way and in their won time. Visit Engaruka, the lost city in the shadow of the Great Rift Wall, where Maasai mix irrigation, farming and traditional herding. In Mkuru, near Arusha National Park, short camel treks with local Maasai give visitors a glimpse into nomadic culture, as they climb nearby Ol Donyo Landaree.

Meru

Only minutes from bustling Arusha are spots that look and feel as they did decades ago. But everywhere, too, is transition as the WaArusha and WaMeru peoples adapt tradition to progress and science. Visitors can meet a traditional healer, learn about animal husbandry and agri-culture, and buy carvings and foodstuffs from local handicraft cooperatives or women’s business.

Southern Pare Mountains

Walk the most remote mountains of northern Tanzania with local farmers, through traditional Pare villages and dense tropical forests. From half day to three day guided hikes, this is an opportunity to step into the culture of the Pare people. Visit the Mghimbi Caves, secret hiding place during the slave raids, the proceed to Malameni Rock, the scene of human sacrifices to appease evil spirits up until the 1930s. Walk through the Ikongwe Village, believe by locals to be a gift from heaven, surrounded by mountain terraces and small waterfalls. Profits from these tours are used to subsidise much needed energy saving stoves and educational scholarship.

Usambara

Africa’s Switzerland, a hiker’s paradise, with dozens of varied treks from half a day to a week. The stunning mountainous district of Lushoto was home to one of Tanzania’s great historical kingdoms.

ZANZIBAR (UNGUJA ISLAND)

For a small island in the southern waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar has a long and unexpected history. For centuries the island has been a centre of slave and ivory trade, if not all trading, from central Africa to the rest of the world and was the world’s main producer of the highly valued clove spice. It is also the centre of Swahili language and culture. Zanzibar is the undisputed capital of the Swahili coast.

encounter this vast trading network and culture around Zanzibar were the Portuguese, who arrived in the late 15th Century. The Portuguese were ousted with the help of Oman, in the mid- 16th Century, whose vast trade connections had been severed by the entrance of the Portuguese.

Zanzibar became the seat of the Omani empire, when Sultan Seyyid Said moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar in 1840, due

largely to its economic importance in the empire and unrest at home. This was to last only 50 years until the British, keen on expanding their colonial reach, declared Zanzibar a British Protectorate. This, in turn, was to last until 1963, when the British handed power back to the Sultan in a constitutional monarchy which was itself overthrown in early 1964 in a violent revolution which established the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, which rules the country to this day.

Exploring Zanzibar at its fullest with Maru Maru hospitality

On the historic island of Zanzibar, amidst the quaint, narrow alleys of Stone Town is Maru Maru Hotel, once a townhouse now boasts 51 well-laid rooms.

Maru Maru Hotel consists of two wings – the Classic Wing with 11 rooms, which have undergone restoration, and the New Wing with 33 modern rooms built around a small courtyard with a star-shaped fountain. The courtyard is ideal for spending time quietly reading, the noise of the water in the fountain a soothing backdrop. On the way to the courtyard, there is a coffee shop which also serves freshly baked pastries and cakes just in case you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea whilst rewinding.

The rooms are well equipped with modern amenities, a comfortable bed in Zanzibari style, swathed in a mosquito net, which is not only essential but also creates a romantic atmosphere with the stained-

glass shades.

An elevator connects both wings to the rooftop terrace, which is a delightful place to be, largely because of the stunning view of the ocean, so you can witness the gentle traffic of dhows, a vista that’s barely changed in generations.

Climbing the flight of wooden stairs leading to the terrace restaurant and reflecting on the hotel’s personality, it’s evident why Maru Maru has been the

preferred property for eminent personalities like Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea. And it wasn’t just the atmosphere that struck me, the scent of the place did too: the hotel smells wonderful as day-long diffusers burn perfumed essential oils.

Maru Maru serves a delightful variety of cuisines, especially Continental and Asian – quality is great and portions are generous. I especially loved the way an array of sauces was offered which you could blend with the main ingredient – poultry, meat, seafood or vegetables.

All the staff right - from the General Manager, receptionist, chefs –lead and supporting roles were super friendly and helpful. Services and requests were promptly addressed.

So, if you’re after an affordable Stone Town break – Maru Maru is a great option and delivers the perfect launch pad from where to explore this historic little place.

CRDB BANK RECORDS 21% PAT INCREASE IN AUDITED 2023 FINANCIAL RESULTS

Nsekela, speaking at a Press Conference to announce the Audited Financial Results for the Financial Year 2023. The conference took place at the CRDB Bank Headquarters on 12th April 2024.

In a clear show of its resilience and strong market share, CRDB Bank has announced impressive financial results for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023, demonstrating a remarkable 21% growth in Profit After Tax (PAT), surging from YZS 351 billion in 2022 to TZS 423 billion.

Furthermore, in the demonstration of its commitment to its shareholders, the Bank has announced a proposed TZS 50 cash dividends per share to shareholders for the fiscal year 2023, bringing the total dividend to TZS 131 billion, representing a growth of 11 percent year on year. The proposed dividend is subject to regulatory approval.

The Bank's stellar performance was primarily contributed by growth in both funded income & non funded incomes. Funded income (interest income) grew by 29% in line with loan portfolio growth. Net interest margin however grew at a 19%, suppressed by the growth in interest expenses by 58% on account of rising interest rates at both domestic and international markets.

On the other hand, the Group continued to record impressive growth in non-funded incomes (Fees and commissions incomes) that saw an impressive 11% year on year growth on account of increased usage of digital channels. This translated to strengthening of earnings per share by 20% to TZS 161.9.

According to the Bank’s audited financial results for the 2023 financial year released, the bank also reported substantial growth in key performance indicators. Total Assets saw a notable 14 percent increase from TZS 11.6 trillion to TZS 13.3 trillion.

Furthermore, Loans and Advances and Customer Deposits also recorded substantial growth at 23% and 8%, reaching TZS 8.5 trillion and TZS 8.9 trillion, respectively. The Bank’s total equity stood at an impressive TZS 1.8 trillion. Abdulmajid Nsekela, the Bank’s Group CEO and Managing Director attributed the Bank’s robust performance to the successful execution of its strategic focus on sustainable growth and the development of a resilient business model capable

of navigating regional and international challenges.

Nsekela emphasized that the seamless execution of the first year of the Bank's new mediumterm strategy (2023 – 2027) has been a key catalyst for achieving record-breaking performance. "The meticulous execution of our strategic initiatives has propelled this exceptional growth.”

The Group’s efforts to deepen its roots in the retail segment have witnessed a remarkable 35% expansion in loans to Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (MSMEs), and notable advancements in inclusive financing across diverse sectors and segments such as youth, women, agriculture, and sustainability financing.

This has resulted in a significant customer acquisitions and remarkable increase in the volume of transactions across various electronic platforms. This growth in transactions on its digital channels continues to support its retail push as fees from digital products increased by 11% over 2022, with retail deposit balances also growing by 23%.

In 2023, CRDB Bank significantly broadened its horizons by expanding its reach into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) market and venturing into the insurance sector with the establishment of CRDB Insurance Company. These strategic moves further strengthen the bank's foothold not only in Tanzania but also across the broader East and Central Africa region.

You put a lot into your job hunt. You tweak your resume, polish your LinkedIn profile, research companies, and brush up on your interview skills as needed. But what if I told you that you're missing something big? Something that 76% of career advisers say will make you way more likely to actually land the job.

Here are three reasons to why you should start volunteering today, to boost your career chances:

1 It looks good on your resume

Let’s start with the most obvious one first. If there’s one point that you can’t refute, it’s that volunteer work looks great on your resume. After all, when’s the last time you heard someone complain about a person being too helpful and community-minded? Probably never. I’m sure that the skills listed on your resume are nothing short of impressive. But, when you’re willing to use those competencies to help with a deserving cause — even when there’s really nothing in it for you? That makes you look not only qualified, but conscientious.

2 It presents an opportunity to meet new people

No, networking doesn’t just need to be done on LinkedIn or at a formal networking event. And, it definitely doesn’t need to be forced, uncomfortable, and filled with awkward pauses. So, this is where volunteering comes in. It’s an easy and completely natural way to meet some new connections in your area. Generally, volunteer opportunities have a pretty friendly, low-pressure environment. This means that you can have genuine, engaging conversations with people who share your interests — without that awkward air of expectations. Chances are, you’ll make more meaningful connections doing this than you ever have around the appetizer table at a networking event.

Donating your time to volunteer is also a great way to gather information and find out a little bit more about

your hands dirty, or do you prefer to do the coordination and administrative tasks? Does working with a certain type of organization make you feel especially inspired and fulfilled? Volunteering presents a nonthreatening opportunity for you to figure all of that stuff out. And, that information is undoubtedly valuable when `determining your next career mov

what exactly you’re looking for in regards to your career. Perhaps you’ve always worked for a large company and are curious about what life is like with a smaller nonprofit. Or, maybe you’re itching to find out a little bit more about what it’s like to work in a startup environment. Beyond company size, volunteering is also an effective way to discover other important tidbits about how you function. Do you like working independently, or as part of a team? Do you enjoy getting your hands dirty, or do you prefer to do the coordination and administrative tasks? And, that information is undoubtedly valuable when determining your next career move.

Recipe Corner Baked Thai Chicken Wings

Ingredients

4 tbsp clear honey

1 tbsp chilli sauce, 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed

1 tbsp freshly grated root ginger

1 lemon grass stalk, outer leaves discarded and finely chopped

2 tbsp lime zest

3-4 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice

1 tbsp light soy sauce

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander, ¼ tsp ground cinnamon

1.4 kg/ 3 lb chicken wings

(about 12 large wings)

6 tbsp mayonnaise

2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander, lemon or lime wedges, to garnish.

1 2 3

Methods

Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°f/ Gas mark 5, 10 minutes before cooking. In a small saucepan, mix together the honey, chilli sauce, garlic, ginger, lemon grass, 1 tablespoon of the lime zest and 2 tablespoons of the lime juice with the soy sauce, cumin, coriander and cinnamon. Heat gently until just starting to bubble, then remove from the heat and leave to cool.

Prepare the chicken wings by folding the tips back under the thickest part of the meat to form a triangle. Arrange in a shallow, ovenproof dish. Pour over the honey mixture, turning the wings to ensure that they are all well coated. Cover with Clingfilm and leave to marinate in the refrigerator for 4 hours or overnight, turning once or twice.

Mix together the mayonnaise with the remaining lime zest and juice and the coriander. Leave to let the flavours develop while the wings are cooking. Arrange the wings on a rack set over a tinfoil-lined roasting tin. Roast at the top of the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the wings are tender and golden, basting once or twice with the remaining marinade and turning once. Remove from the oven. Garnish the wings with lemon or lime wedges and serve immediately with the mayonnaise.
