Kili Music Awards Hot as Ever Fierce but Friendly Competition By Paul Owere

T

he Kilimanjaro Music Award competition has become synonymous with surprises, disappointments and triumphs over the years, and this year’s edition was no different. Dar Life was present when the thrilling awards presentation gala took place at Mlimani City Hall in Dar es Salaam. The amazing “Hill Hall” was a sight to behold, from the décor to the audience in attendance and the choreography of the competitors. For the over 2,000 guests in turnout at the event, and thousands glued to their TV screens at home, the evening was an emotional rollercoaster, as the best in the music industry came out to be crowned. This year Kili Music Awards featured an array of themed performances that saw the return of long lost oldies hip hop on the big stage. The event was kicked off by Mwana FA, later followed by many others.

The much-anticipated 2014 Kilimanjaro Awards went down as planned and was a success. The man who carried the day was the sensational Bongo musician, Diamond Platinumz. He proved to be number one -- the best Tanzania has to offer.

“The ‘Nataka Kulewa’ hit-maker clinched seven awards making him undoubtedly the biggest winner of the night and setting a new record for the highest number of awards taken by a single performer in one year since the program was established 14 years ago.” 14 I Dar Life I June 2014

“The 15th edition of the Kilimanjaro Tanzania Music Awards Night was a show rich in style and elegance. Celebrities rubbed shoulders with their equals and admirers to make it an evening to remember.”

Diamond has also been nominated for other continental honours including the Mamas and the Kora Awards Beat competition, most notably beating out Lady JayDee to take home the Song of the Year trophy. On an emotional night with former beauty queen Wema Sepetu by his side, the MTV award

nominee was also chosen as the Best Composer, Best Entertainer, Best Collaboration, Best Afro Pop Song, Video of the Year and Best Male artist. Riding on the fame that he has garnered off his chart-topping hit single which he released in October last year, the elated Diamond could not hold back his joy. Also basking in the glory June 2014 I Dar Life I 15

“As a future wife to be it is good to see my baby winning,” she said amid a thunderous applause. As some of his contemporaries seem to be fading, it was evident that the crooner is just getting better and the only blip on the night could have been his fashion sense, which the MC comically took issue with. On a night when some messed up their speeches, the singer remained composed; on most occasions he remembered to thank his fans, who he said were the pillar of his success. 16 I Dar Life I June 2014

Rivaling Diamond on the awards table was Jahazi Modern Taarab’s Mzee Yusuph, who picked up the Best Taarab song, Best Male Taarab singer, Best Taarab Band and Best Taarab composer awards. Another notable winner on the night was rapper Fid Q, who for the first time took home the two hip-hop awards, something pundits said was a worthy wait. In closing, the Kili Music Awards was an entertaining night of recognition for upcoming and established talents in Bongo Flava. Congratulations to all the participants and especially to the winners!

was Wema Sepetu, who took the opportunity to announce what many translated as their impending nuptials as she tagged herself as Diamond’s wife to be.

World Music Day

Come and celebrate World Music Day on 20th June at Alliance Française with Modern Griot , one of Africa’s most popular and recognized musicians, and Habib Koité , known primarily for his unique approach to playing the guitar by tuning it on a pentatonic scale and playing on open strings as one would on a kamale n’goni. Other pieces of his music sound more like the blues or flamenco, which are two styles he learned under Khalilou Traore. Koité’s vocal style is intimate and relaxed, emphasizing calm, moody singing rather than operatic technical prowess. Members of Bamada play talking drum, guitar, bass, drum set, harmonica, violin, calabash, and balafon. Koité composes and arranges all songs, singing in English, French, and Bambara. Artisan Market Again a Success

Mustafa

Haassanali’s “MUUNGANO COLLECTION” in Russia

As Tanzania celebrated its fifty years of union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Mustafa Hassanali, Tanzania’s lead pan-African designer, was been invited by the Embassy of Tanzania in Moscow as a designer to showcase his creations during Tanzania Day, an event to celebrate this milestone moment. The Muungano collection showcased embodies harmony through the use of various shades of the base colour brown, synonymous with the colour of the sand which was symbolically used by Mwalimu Nyerere in the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania. Khanga, East African fabric, has been mixed in various hues to bring out the sophistication, simplicity and glamour of Tanzanian style.

A Traditional Dutch Celebration in Dar es Salaam

Dar Life was present at the 11th bi-annual Artisan Market held in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam this month. The event, which is run by a team of female volunteers originally from outside of Tanzania, began several years ago with just four small vendors. The Artisan Market has now grown into a bi-annual event with over 80 vendors selling beautiful and unique crafts and goods, including jewelry, handbags and wallets, tableware, home decorations, and clothing. The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives. 20 I Dar Life I June 2014

To mark the first annual celebration of Kings Day (what has traditionally been Queens Day), the Netherlands Association in Dar es Salaam organized an Orange Party. The party was held at the Golden Tulip Hotel and featured a live performance by the band Flat Out! Guests in attendance ranged from Dutch expatriates living in Dar remembering home to local Tanzanians looking for a fun taste of another culture. Special thanks to the Golden Tulip Hotel for hosting, as well as the numerous sponsors who supported this memorable event!

Orange Party

A Traditional Dutch Celebration in Dar es Salaam By Brittany Karima

“As King’s Day is the one day each year that the Dutch government allows non-permit and non-value added tax sales to take place in the nation’s streets, the holiday has become known for vrijmarkt (“free market”) in which nearly half of the Dutch citizens across the country sell their used items. “

22 I Dar Life I June 2014

The holiday has also become a celebration of the nationalcolor with «orange madness» or oranjegekte. The Dutch often dye their hair orange for the occasion and attend large-scale concerts and special public events in which they are joined by up to a million visitors from outside of the country. To mark this special occasion, the Netherlands Association in Dar es Salaam organized an Orange Party. The party was held at the Golden Tulip Hotel on Wednesday 30 April and featured a live performance by the band Flat Out! Diverse Dar Choral Socie Classical & Jazz Music Series By Wema Kajo

T

he Dar Choral Society is not just about singing classical music in Tanzania! It is sharing our love of music by making it a bridge between all countries and religions. Originally founded in the 1940s by the European community in Dar es Salaam. It was revived in 2009 to become a very diverse choir including many Tanzanian singers. The group is without doubt one of the highlights of the classical music choral performance arena in Tanzania. With its long heritage of over 70 years of performance in Tanzania, the Choir 26 I Dar Life I June 2014

is showing all the signs of becoming a well-disciplined modern choir ushering in a new era of classical music in Tanzania. The Dar Choral Society held a classical music and jazz concert in the Kicukoni Ballroom at Serena Hotel on May 25th. This concert marks the seventh time that the choir performs with an orchestra and is one of the major concerts that the Dar Choral Society hosts trice a year, generally in March, May and November. Covering works by Hon. Ambassador Masaki Okada for the amazing violin with Rossini,

Strauss and Beethoven, the group continued their tradition of excellence as young and energetic Hekima Raymond (Tanzania) conducted a whole choir and full orchestra of talented professional and amateur musicians. The Orchestra managed by the choir is made up of members of the expatriate community, Tanzanians and diplomats serving the Tanzanian nation in various disciplines, hence its nickname – the ‘Choir of the World in Dar’.

The long-term goal of the Dar Choral Society is to combine the beauty of music using choral works and orchestra. It aims at promoting classical music to thousands of Tanzanians through concerts and recordings of music in multiple languages, including Kiswahili. “The Society also aims to educate the public in the “art and science” of music through their concert series, enabling people of all ages to participate in this high quality cultural activity. Their objectives also include developing the Tanzanian arts infrastructure and providing meaningful experiences through engagement with music. “ The group holds their rehearsals on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30-8:00 PM at Lady Chesham Nursery School. Beyond the teaching of ballet – classical, modern, contemporary and character – the school also organizes shows and participation in events, both at home and abroad.

Wednesday 4th June 2014 / from 7.30pm / Entrance Free / Karibuni wote

This stone sculpture exhibition is an overview of ten years of work by Arusha-based Dutch sculptress Mieke van Grinsven. From the artist: “The first sculptures, which were made out of serpentine and opal stone from Zimbabwe, were all inspired by the form of the stones in which I saw faces every time I worked. Over the years I made about 20 torsos, from very small to lifesize. My last torsos were based on the strong and grounded stature which I feel many Africa women embody. Bit by bit my work became more abstract around the concept of ‘Energy’ and how it flows from the earth through a human and into the universe. The sculptures are normally positioned in my home garden gallery in the bush under the acacia trees. There is a tremendous exchange of energy from the stones, which have lately inspired musicians and dancers alike.” Opening / Tuesday 3rd May / 6.30pm Exhibition Hall, FREE! The Gift that Keeps on Giving Artisan Market Again a Success “This is a hopeful place, it gives us hope to keep doing what we do when we see people excited about the things we create.” – Local Artisan

By Brittany Karima Cesarini

D

ar Life was present at the 11th bi-annual Artisan Market held in Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam this month. As one of the organizers, Dyan Larmey, explained, local artisans apply to sell their wares at the event. The organizers limit vendors to

46 I Dar Life I June 2014

specialty artisans involved in production and generally have high quality standards. However, a few emerging artisans are selected for each market and strategically placed alongside more experienced artisans in an effort to be inclusive and encourage artisans to further specialize and improve their products. One of the oldest and most well established collectives at the impressive event was Mama Masai, which has been in existence since 2000 and is based in Dar es Salaam. As organizer Nisha Shah-Sanghvi explained, this initiative enables approximately 200 Masai women from the Simanjaro region of Northern

themselves. Other initiatives, such as the Nuru Workshop and the Free Drug Rehabilitation Centre of Tanzania target specific marginalized populations including those living with physical and/or mental disabilities and those struggling with alcohol/drug abuse. Rooted in the Christian faith, both of these enterprises were selling items such as greeting cards, bookmarks, key chains, and jewelry made from recycled materials to support their work.

“The emphasis in these collectives is not only to make a profit to fund charitable works, but to train and empower people

to live more independent, stable, and fulfilling lives. The Artisan Market is thus a great place to support sustainable human development, while also doing some affordable shopping for unique handmade products. In the words of one vendor, “This is a hopeful place, it gives us hope to keep doing what we do when we see people excited about the things we create. I hope to keep coming back to sell my products.” Dar Life warmly congratulates the organizers and the vendors. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next Artisan Market in November 2014! Tanzania to create colorful beaded crafts, which are exported to Dar es Salaam and outside the country. The initiative, managed by a group called Fair Trade Friends, provides a steady source of income for Masai women who work together in groups of approximately 10-20 in order to support each other. Also present at the market was a table of goods from Upendo Means Love, an enterprise situated in Zanzibar. Upendo Means Love is a doublepronged effort to provide education for women via a workshop and school intended to build life skills, interfaith relations, and sewing skills as well as a shop where goods are sold to help women support

Are you looking for cool new gadgets to buy in 2014? Here are a few new technology gadgets you can add to your gift or wish list this year.

Samsung Mirrorless Nx3000 Camera

The new NX3000 stylishly bridges the gap between the too-selfie-obsessed NX Mini and the more costly NX300 model. Yes, this model still has the full screen LCD that does a full 180 so you can take the best selfies in the history of hashtag selfies… if that’s your thing. We’re more interested in the 20.3 Megapixel APS-C sensor, 5fps continuous shooting, hot shoe with bundled external flash, built in NFC and WiFi transfers and 1/4000 shutter. You also have access to the NX line of lenses, and out of the box you get options for either a regular 20-50mm lens or a 16-50mm stabilized power zoom lens (throw in another $50 for this option).

The iStick is an Apple MFi-certified thumb drive that comes with both a USB and iOS devices. This is handy for many tasks, including transferring movies from the PC to an iPad and moving an e-book collection from an iPod Touch to a Mac. The iStick has a sliding switch that controls which connector is exposed, so switching from one to the other takes just one flick of a thumb. Combined with the iStick mobile app, you can play media directly from the flash drive (with support for formats not native to iOS), as well as open files from a variety of apps (no need to transfer), conduct file management, and even backup files from your iOS device to the thumb drive. It comes in a variety of storage capacities, from 8GB to 128GB.

Advantages of Being Flexible in the Workplace Perspectives from the Employee and Employer Side By America’s Job Exchange Recruiting Specialist

Advantages of Begin Flexible – from the Employee’s Perspective • Embracing change can expand your opportunities. Today’s work environment is fluid. This means those employees who are able to adapt to shifting priorities are considered a valuable asset – above and beyond their skills and experience. Being able to adjust to shifts in organizational dynamics is necessary today. • Being flexible can help you strike work/life balance. Tele–commuting, the connected workplace and other technologies mean that the lines between work–time and personal–time have blurred. Rather than resist this change, embrace it. While you may need to be flexible and respond to emails during your evening hours, you can also use this flexibility to your advantage. Personal needs – once relegated to weekends alone – can be addressed more easily since we are always connected, in and outside of the office. • Being flexible will make you more 50 I Dar Life I June 2014

responsive to change. The shifting dynamics of the workplace means that you need to adapt and respond to change, quickly. Resisting this can lead to undue stress. Recognizing and embracing flexibility will help you adapt to difficult situations more easily. Advantages of Begin Flexible – from the Employer’s Perspective • Being flexible signals that you value diversity in the workplace. Diversification of the workplace is the new norm. Differing cultures, religions, and employee needs mean that today’s employer must accommodate diversity when it comes to working, thinking and interacting with others. Being flexible will enable you to accommodate the needs of your diverse workforce more readily. • Flexibility is a good management decision. Managers need to adapt to day-today shifts in workplace schedules – employee personal issues, an unexpected influx of work and more. Being flexible creates an environment where employers and employees can look at work and personal needs in a balanced approach, which is mutually beneficial. • Being flexible is a win-win. Being flexible with your employees is good for business. It builds employee trust and commitment, helps attract and keep key talent, as well as drives everyone to find solutions that work for all those involved.

lexibility at work is a necessity for employees and employers, alike. Streamlined workforces, shifts in technology and a changing market are just a few reasons why flexibility is the new norm for many organizations. While your company may not have a formal set of rules for a flexible workplace, there are many advantages to be gained by taking on a flexible attitude – and approach, when it comes to your job.

6 Tips for Finding the Best Professional Speaker Motivate & Inspire Your Employees

electing the right professional speaker is one of the most important elements in a successful meeting. Selecting the right professional speaker for your meeting can be a daunting task, as speakers are available in every fee range and specialty topic. The National Speakers Association, comprised of more than 3,600 professional speakers, has compiled these tips to help make your meeting a success. “Start looking for a professional speaker as soon as the date for your meeting is set. Consider how much time you have to fill and where that time falls in your overall program. If your time slot is flexible, a professional speaker can often tell you the right amount of time for the job. A professional can also make recommendations about the order of topics/speakers if one presentation will follow another.” A speaker’s expertise in a given field may be the big draw, but a well-known name does not guarantee a professional presentation. High prices don’t always mean high quality. Will your audience and the overall program benefit most from a celebrity; an expert in the field; a popular sports personality; a best-selling author; or a professional speaker who has a

58 I Dar Life I June 2014

thorough knowledge of the appropriate topic? Personal referrals are a great way to narrow your search. Ask colleagues for recommendations. Speaker’s bureaus locate and book speakers according to your specifications and needs. A bureau can locate speakers and quote fees. Many bureaus specialize in particular speakers such as celebrities, leadership speakers, authors or motivational speakers. A professional speaker will be a real partner in this process. Often they will ask questions about the needs of your audience and what they can accomplish for you. Ask your candidates for references and, if they are speaking in your area, ask if you can attend the program and observe them in action. When selecting your speaker, consider that you are not only paying for the time the speaker is on the platform but also for the hours spent researching, preparing and customizing the presentation. Some speakers may negotiate their fees when they are doing more than one program for you or when they are allowed to sell their products. Ask about your options. Share information about your group or company. This will help the speaker become familiar with your organization, while facilitating a customized presentation. Send your newsletter or anything that would include key people, buzz words or insider news and views. Give the speaker a clear outline of what you expect. Be specific about the size and demographics of your audience. This gives the speaker the opportunity to build on (and not duplicate) what the other speakers say.

BEAUTY

Skin Deep

The Benefits of Body Scrubs By Anzelle Johnson

I

s it really true that beauty is only skin deep? Actually, your skin says much more about your health and wellbeing than you think. Clean, radiant-looking skin is a sign of healthiness and a toxin-free body while shallow, dull skin

might indicate harmful toxins polluting the body’s systems. In a perfect world we would breathe fresh, unpolluted air, the weather, temperature and humidity would be constant, and our lives would be stressfree. The fact is that we live in an environment that is less than perfect...far less. On a daily basis our skin is exposed to pollution, contaminated water and air conditioning that robs our skin of its youthfulness and radiance.

“To ensure your skin stays radiant and free of toxins and pollutants it is good to have a professional exfoliation every so often and at home at least once or twice a week. If you have more sensitive skin it would be advisable to scrub it up only once a week.” Body scrubs have various benefits that are not just good

68 I Dar Life I June 2014

for your skin but also beneficial for your overall health and well-being. Here are five very good reasons for you to hop over to your nearest spa or grab that pot of sea salt!

Skin Glow

This is probably the biggest reason for you to have a body scrub once every two weeks. Sea salt in particular has many minerals and nutrients that help to re-miniralise your skin, feeding it from the outside.

Exfoliating

This is the most obvious reason, but every minute your skin sheds between 30,000 and 40,000 dead skin cells. They get replaced by new ones but the old ones need to go somewhere. Exfoliation helps to remove the dead skin cells and prevents your skin from looking dull and faded. With exfoliation the skin’s pores are

Increase Circulation

Body scrubs helps to promote blood flow to your skin and at the same time remove excess fluid through the lymphatic system. A professional therapist will be able to use techniques to push toxic fluids towards the lymph nodes and to increase circulation to the surface layers of the skin.

Improve Cellulite and Ageing Yes! Regular body scrubs can reduce the dimples caused by cellulite and give your skin a smoother appearance. Regular

body scrubs help to promote the formation of collagen in the skin which will leave your skin looking younger and visibly firmer. Try scrubs with coffee or green tea as the key ingredients. They are packed with antioxidants to prevent aging.

Relaxation

According to research, sea salt therapies provide psychological benefits and improve quality of sleep. Health Benefits of Sex

Increase Your Desire, Improve Your Life By Dr. Joseph Mercola

A

good sex life is one way to stay happy, healthy and fit. Here are just a few of the health benefits to having safe sex on a regular basis…. • Get fewer colds because of an increase in immunoglobulin A, an antibody that fights infection. • Women can get more predictable periods because of exposure to male pheromones.

72 I Dar Life I June 2014

• A better physical response to stress. • Lower blood pressure, which lowers your risk of heart disease. • Lower your bad cholesterol and increase your good cholesterol. • Help tone your abs, gluts and pretty much any muscle in your body. • Natural increases in estrogen improve the appearance of your hair, skin and nails. • Improve your memory because blood flow

And this is actually only the tip of the iceberg. “Sex has also been found to boost self-esteem and improve intimacy in your relationship. This is because sex and orgasms result in increased levels of the hormone oxytocin -- the “love” hormone -- that helps you feel bonded to your partner. As oxytocin increases, so do hormones known as endorphins, which in turn lessens feelings of pain related to everything from headaches and arthritis to symptoms of PMS. It can also help you to get a better night’s sleep. Further, for women, having sex can help strengthen muscles of your pelvic floor (the same ones used to stop urination). As you age, having strong pelvic floor muscles reduces your risk of accidents.” Of course, these benefits are assuming you’re having sex with a mutually monogamous partner -otherwise you risk catching a sexually transmitted disease. How to Improve Your Sexual Desire Naturally If you’d like to take advantage of some of the health benefits that regular sexual activity has to offer, yet find that your desire just isn’t what it used to be, there are many natural tips that can help. One of the first ones I recommend -- again because sexual dysfunction can worsen due to stress and anxiety -- is taking control of your emotions by learning the Meridian Tapping Technique (MTT) can really help. MTT is a technique that can help you effectively address your stress-related thoughts and leave you feeling

calmer and more able to face your challenges, whatever they may be. Your sexual fires may also be fanned simply by eating less sugar. High levels of sugar in your bloodstream can actually turn off the gene that controls your sex hormones. Four other tips to give your libido a big-time boost include: • Getting physically active. Studies have shown that men who engaged in regular physical activity lowered their risk of experiencing sexual dysfunction. Remember, when using exercise as a drug, it’s important to vary your routine and include various types of exercise. • Optimizing your diet based on your body’s unique nutritional type. When you’re eating the foods your body was designed to eat, you’ll notice improvements in every aspect of your health. • Optimizing your vitamin D and insulin levels, as these simple measures have profound influences on every area of your health, including your sex life. • Considering choline and vitamin B5 supplements. The neurotransmitter that triggers the sexual message, in both men and women, is acetylcholine (ACH). With too little ACH, sexual activity goes down. One way to safely and effectively enhance ACH levels in your body is to take choline supplements (1,000-3,000 mg) and vitamin B5 (500-1,500 mg).

increases to your brain. • Increased feelings of motivation because of the release of endorphins.

Rungwe Mountain Finding the Spiritual in Nature

R

ungwe Mountain is the highest mountain in Mbeya region and dominates the skyline for several kilometers. Rising above the small town of Tukuyu at 2,960 meters, Rungwe Mountain is southern Tanzania’s highest peak and third in Tanzania overall after Kilimanjaro and Meru in the north. The mountain is composed of ten or more dormant volcanic craters and domes. It is surrounded by the catchments forest reserve, which incorporates upper montane forest and montane grassland, with lesser amounts of bush land found at the streams and at the edges of montane forest. The mountain has spiritual significance to the Wanyakyusa tribe, who rely on its slopes for medicine as well as a place of prayer and worship. The forest is home to a variety of significant flora and fauna, including the threatened Abbot’s Duiker. It is regarded as an important bird-watching area, with two species listed as ‘vulnerable’. There are also two new species of primate (the Kipunji monkey and the Rungwe

78 I Dar Life I June 2014

Galago) and over 530 species of orchid. Catchment from the reserve feeds numerous villages and towns from Kiwira to Katumba to Tukuyu and Kandete, and many settlements in between. All streams from the north, west and southwest flow into the Kiwira River. These streams include the Marogala, Sinini, Kipoke, Kilasi and Mulagala. In the southeast begins the Mbaka River, with the Suma River feeding into it. In the east the Mrambo and the Mwatisi flow out of the reserve. All of these rivers flow into Lake Nyasa. Well-defined hiking trails have been established to enable hikers to reach the top, with the most famous route leaving from Rungwe Secondary School. Tea farm walking and forest walking through local villages and several catchments with pure clear water is also enjoyable for visitors to the mountain. Rungwe is not to be missed! Stay for a day or two and hike, relax and explore this unspoiled part of Tanzania. The best time to visit Rungwe Mountain is usually June to October, when it is dry and warmer.

Escape to the Shores Unique Safari in the By Amina Lakhani

N

estled deep in the rift valley, in the remote inaccessible west of Tanzania, lie the Mahale Mountains. Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Tanzania. The park’s 1,613 square kilometers lie on the western border with the Congo, against the remarkable shores of Lake Tanganyika. Mahale Mountains National Park, like its northerly neighbour Gombe Stream, is home to some of Africa’s remaining wild chimpanzees. Tracking these chimps in Mahale is a thrilling experience. “It is specifically for active safari; it takes place on foot through dense forest. Mahale Mountains is a prime destination for primate lovers, ornithologists, forest dwellers and nature trailers.” Mahale Mountains is a very special safari destination, set apart from alternatives in character, location and style. This isolated safari destination on Lake Tanganyika provides unparalleled opportunities to witness wild groups of habituated and un-habituated chimpanzees in an exceptional natural environment. 82 I Dar Life I June 2014

he Mahale Mountains

The Wild Kingdom of Mahale Mountains A vast number of birds have been recorded in Mahale. On the lake shore, where there are bushes of reed, small swamp and fields, grassland species such as the red-collared widowbird can be seen. In the site of the former village of Kasiha, where palm trees are

dominant, the speckled mouse birds are seen building their nests. Crown-eagles, bee-eaters and rollers can be observed at Mountain Nkungwe, while in the gallery forests along Kansyana Valley crested guinea fowl reside in groups and vividly colored parrots and Ross’s Turacos flit among the treetops.

The altitude range of Mahale is reflected in its wide variety of habitats, with a floral composition that reflects a unique combination of influences associated with the eastern savannah, western rainforest and southern Miombo woodland biomes. And while chimpanzees are the star attraction, the slopes June 2014 I Dar Life I 83

Things to do in Mahale National Park • Chimp tracking: Tracking the chimps of Mahale is a delightful experience. The guide’s eyes pick out last night’s nests – shadowy clumps high in a gallery of trees crowding the sky. Scraps of half-eaten fruit and fresh dung become valuable clues, leading deeper into the forest. Butterflies flit in the dappled sunlight. 84 I Dar Life I June 2014

• Hiking: You can trace the Tongwe people’s ancient pilgrimage to the mountain spirits, hiking through the montane rainforest belt – home to an endemic race of Angola colobus monkey – to high grassy ridges chequered with alpine bamboo. Then bathe in the impossibly clear waters of the world’s longest, second-deepest and leastpolluted freshwater lake – harboring an estimated 1,000 fish species – before returning as you came, by boat. • Cruising: Traditional dhow cruises on the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. • Fishing and boating: Enjoy these water activities in a traditional Arab dhow on Lake Tanganyika. Best Time To Visit The best time to visit the park is during the dry season, which runs from May to October.

Getting There & Around Scheduled flights through Flight Link, Coastal Aviation and Safari Link are available from Arusha, Dar-es-Salaam and Kigoma to Mahale Mountains National Park. Also available is a National Park motorboat trip from Kigoma, which takes about 4-5 hours. Visitors can also come on the 7-hour weekly steamer trip from Kigoma, and then hire a local fishing boat for another 1-2 hour ride to the park. You can experience chimp tracking, safaris, wildlife and beauty in the Mahale Mountains by contacting: • Fox Safari Camp - M: + 25 5 (0) 754 237 422, E: fox@ tanzaniasafaris.info • Flight Link – M: +255 (0) 788 835 212 E: marketing@ flightlink.co.tz, • Coastal Aviation – M: +255 (0) 787 232 747 E: safari@ coastal.co.tz

support a diverse forest fauna, including readily observed troops of red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys, Angolan black and white colobus (which are considered a new species in this area). The eastern slopes of Mahale support savannah and woodland species such as leopards (increasing in number), lions, African hunting dogs, Kudus, elands, roans and sable antelopes, giraffes, buffaloes and elephants.

World Heritage Sites From the Heights of Kilimanjaro to Depths of Ngorongoro Crater By Simon Sameja

Tanzania is a country which encompasses an extraordinary history and an abundance of natural wonders; therefore it is no surprise Tanzania has eight World Heritage Sites… but do you know them all?

“These chosen sites are a fundamental reminder why interaction between people and nature must achieve a balance of preservation and conservation between the two”.

KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK

KONDOA ROCK ART SITE

The Kilimanjaro National Park is located near Moshi, Tanzania. It is centered on the iconic and dramatic snow-clad slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, which covers an area of 753 km (291 square miles). In 1973, the mountain above the tree line was classified as a National Park and was opened to public access in 1977, but it wasn’t until 1987 UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site.

The Kondoa rock art site is a series of caves carved into the side of a hill looking out over the steppe. The cave site is nine kilometers off the main highway from Kondoa to Arusha, about 20 km north of Kondoa. The site has a spectacular collection of images from over 150 shelters depicting elongated people, animals, and hunting scenes. Today many of the shelters are still considered to have ritual associations with the people who live nearby, reflecting their beliefs and cosmological traditions.

THE NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

SELOUS GAME RESERVE

The Selous Game Reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km (21,081 square miles) and is one of largest fauna reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature. The reserve is home to typical savannah animals such as elephants, hippopotami, the rare African Wild Dog and crocodiles, which are all found in larger numbers compared to any other African park. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) boasts the finest blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeological sites in Africa and is situated 180 km west of Arusha. The rich pasture and permanent water of the crater floor supports a large resident population of wildlife of up to 25,000 predominantly grazing animals. The conservation area is administered by the NCA Authority, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It covers an area of 8,288 km (3,200 square miles).

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest park, and one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges, hence its World Heritage June 2014 I Dar Life I 97

Site status. It is most famous for its annual migration of over one million white bearded (or brindled) wildebeest and 200,000 zebra. The park covers 14,763 km (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains and savannah as well as riverine forest and woodlands. The park lies in the north of the country, bordered to the north by the national Tanzania and Kenyan border, where it is contiguous with the Masai Mara National Reserve.

fusion and harmonization; its great symbolic importance in the suppression of slavery; and the intense seaborne trading activity between Asia and Africa, which is illustrated today in the exceptional architecture and urban structure of Stone Town. RUNS OF KILWA KISIWANI AND RUINS OF SONGO MNARA

Stone Town, or Mji Mkongwe in Swahili (meaning “ancient town), is the oldest part of Zanzibar City. The old town is built on a triangular peninsula of land on the western coast of the island and was awarded World Heritage Site status in 2000. Justification for the inscription includes its rich cultural 98 I Dar Life I June 2014

The remains of these two great East African ports admired by early European explorers are situated on two small islands near the coast. From the 13th to the 16th century, the merchants of Kilwa dealt in gold, silver, pearls, perfumes, Arabian crockery, Persian earthenware and Chinese porcelain; much of the trade in the Indian Ocean thus passed through their hands. Serious archaeological investigation began in the 1950s. In 1981 it was declared a World Heritage Site, and noted visitor sites are the Great Mosque, the Mkutini Palace and some remarkable ruins. However, the ruins are also on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The list constitutes a call to improve their safe guarding and is designed to rally national and international efforts for their preservation.
